A practice version of the red floral robe from OFMD! Some key points I wanted to get right was where the end of the collar hit and the sleeve length. I chose to add a slight flare around the feet with the trapezoid body pieces, and didn't go for a pleat in the back panel. The shoulder seams hit at the upper arm, and this gives the robe the foldy effect seen in the show.

This robe is made of cotton (a 2.8 yard square king sheet) with no lining or interfacing. It has 8 pieces, and is sized for someone 6ft tall.

4 sleeve panels: 20 x 19 inch rectangles

2 front panels: 18 bottom edge, 10 top edge, and 58 inch perpindicular

1 back panel: 38 bottom edge, 26 top edge, and 58 inch perpindicular

1 collar: 6 x 60 inch, folded in half to attach.

fabric source for the final robe. I recommend the bedding section in thrift stores for cotton practice fabric.

Today is Halloween 2023. Do you remember where you were on this day in 2012?

Visualize it.

Now imagine your best friends were just murdered. You were betrayed and falsely imprisoned for their deaths.

You're still in prison and your name is Sirius Black.

Not until next summer do you finally escape, living off rats in a dilapidated house on your old school's property while hunting the man who framed you.

Freedom is snatched away a second time and you go back on the run, but at least you don't spend the summer in prison. Yet as the leaves bloom red and gold, you find yourself living in a cave, begging for scraps at a nearby village through frost and snow.

The following summer, you go back to the childhood home of your nightmares where you were physically and emotionally abused until you ran away for good. Or so you thought. You spend the next year locked inside, not allowed to leave. Visitors come and go, sometimes staying a few nights or even weeks. But the rest of the time you are alone with the literal screams of your mother's cursing and slurs echoing through the empty house.

Your last summer arrives, but you don't know it yet. You leave the house to save your godson and never return. You're 37 when you pass through the veil.

You were 33 when you escaped from prison.

And you were only 21 when your bright future was snuffed out.

We forget how young Sirius was when he went to Azkaban. Or what 12 years really means until we look back on how young WE were 12 years ago. How much we've changed and the experiences that shaped us. That whole time, Sirius was trapped in a time capsule of his darkest depression. And after all that time, he barely lived at all.

Okay, so this part seems easy to answer on its face:

Harry only ALMOST died, so the horcrux was only almost destroyed. But if Fawkes had let Harry die, then theoretically it should have also destroyed the horcrux.

But the REAL question is:

What if Harry had died at any other point in the series from something other than a proven way to destroy horcruxes?

Would the horcrux have taken over Harry's body after he died because the horcrux can't be destroyed through ordinary means? Can Harry not actually be killed because he's a horcrux and that's actually how he survives every dangerous encounter in the series?

What if someone dropped a boulder on Nagini or cut her in half with a regular sword? Does the blade not cut through? Does she heal or have to survive maimed in perpetuity? Do living horcruxes not abide by the same rules as inanimate ones so don't require extraordinary methods to destroy them?

Maybe the only reason Harry dies in the Forbidden Forest is because Voldemort did it, and only Voldemort had the power to destroy his own horcrux!

I... can't believe it's been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came out. Crushing my dreams of Sirius raising Harry.

His death SHOOK me. Ever since then, I've always casually skipped ahead to glance at pages toward the end of the book to make sure my favorite characters will survive.

Did Dumbledore WANT Peter Pettigrew to escape?

Think about it:

He knew Sirius was innocent. (Why encourage Harry and Hermione to rescue him otherwise?)

He knew Lupin didn't take the wolfsbane potion and was running around in the Forbidden Forest.

There was plenty of time to do other things that would have made it easier to save Sirius - like make sure Pettigrew was captured. They had a TIME TURNER. If they needed more time, do another turn!

But most importantly, if Sirius Black was found innocent, he NEVER would have let Harry go back to the Dursleys. And Dumbledore wanted Harry with the Dursleys as part of his plan against Voldemort.

I have to wonder if Dumbledore knew or suspected Sirius was innocent the entire time. Why wouldn't Sirius have been given veritaserum which would have revealed his innocence from the very beginning? Wasn't Dumbledore a member of the Wizengamot? At the very least, wasn't he a significant enough figure to successfully argue the voice of reason here?

If Sirius Black had been free, he would have taken Harry in.

When McGonagall urged Dumbledore not to leave Harry with the Dursleys because she had witnessed how awful they were, Dumbledore argued they were the only family Harry had left. But what about Harry's godfather? Who is a wizard with most likely more legal rights than muggles and would obviously have been James and Lily's choice in their will if they had one.

When Hagrid delivers baby Harry to Dumbledore, he says young Sirius Black let him borrow the motorcycle for the task. Does that sound like someone who showed up to finish the job for Voldemort? Does it not sound out of character as hell that Sirius Black would kill his best friends, make sure their child was in safe keeping, and then go on a rampage killing muggles and another friend?

But if Sirius Black had never gone to Azkaban, he would have botched Dumbledore's plan of having him raised by the Dursleys. In fact, with as much shenanigans as the Marauders got up to, Sirius would probably have managed to keep Harry out of a LOT of the things he was dragged through at Hogwarts. He probably would have showed up on campus as Padfoot on a regular basis to check on Harry! And because Harry would have grown up with a trustworthy adult, Harry might have TOLD Padfoot things before they spiraled!
