Fluffy Surprise

Author's Note: Not proofread and the first fic I've written in like six months so read if you dareeee

Summary: Reader decides to give Spencer a present when he returns to their new home.

Warnings: People with cat allergies, beware! (?) Fluff ofc.

You moved into the new house two weeks ago.  Technically, you moved all your stuff into the new house two weeks ago. In boxes. Lots and lots of heavy boxes.

Spencer had come up with a system, labeling each box with the room it would go into at the new house. You had worked together to pack everything, label each box, and unload the boxes into your new home. 

And it seemed like the moment he set the last box down and you were ready to start setting the place up, his phone rang. 

Spencer had been gone for one week. 

The case was halfway across the country, somewhere in Santa Fe. You couldn’t exactly be mad at him for being gone, but unpacking and trying to organize everything without his input was a nightmare. You were finishing the last box in your shared bedroom, carefully placing his clothes on wooden hangers and organizing them in the closet, when your phone rang. 

Spencer’s name lit up the screen. You answered quickly. 

“Hi, Spence,” you said, plopping down on the freshly made bed.

You could tell how tired he was from the long pause he took before responding. “Hey, honey. How’s the unpacking?” he asked with a small sigh. 

You frowned to yourself, worried about how tired he sounded. “Oh, it’s alright. I’d like you to look through all the rooms when you get home, just to make sure everything is where it should be.” You let out a soft laugh, “I also had a hard time hanging up all the pictures and paintings without you, so we may have to straighten some of them up when you get back.” 

Another pause followed, though this time you could envision him nodding to himself. “We can do that,” he said. “I’m sorry you had to do it all by yourself. I promise I’ll find a way to make it up to you.” 

You rolled your eyes. “It was fine, Spencer. Besides, I’m pretty sure chasing a serial killer or something gives you an excuse.” 

He sighed on the other end of the line. “That’s what I wanted to talk about. We caught the unsub this evening. I’m hoping to be home late this evening, but it probably won’t be until after you go to bed.”

You smiled, content with the thought of him coming home to your freshly decorated home. “Oh, I’ll be staying up. I want to see your reaction to the place.”

“Alright,” he said, clearly too tired to urge you to go to bed instead with a list of facts about the health benefits of a good night’s sleep. 

You sighed. “As much as I'd love to stay and chat, I’ve got about fifteen more boxes to go.” 

“I understand. I should probably get some work done, too. Files, reports, you know how it is,” his voice was barely a whisper now, the exhaustion beginning to get the better of him. 

“Don’t work too hard, Spence,” you cautioned. “I’ll see you tomorrow night. I love you.”

“I won’t. I love you too,” he answered. The end of his line promptly went dead.

You looked around the bedroom, discarding your phone on the bed. You couldn’t help but wonder if there was something you could do to make Spencer’s return home a bit more special. 

You sat up and leaned over, furrowing your brow and resting your head in the palm of your hand as you tried to think of things Spencer liked. Of course, Spencer liked a lot of things. He liked sweet coffee, puzzles, and a classic novel in some foreign language you couldn’t comprehend. 

None of those things were overly special, in your mind. As you sat and wracked your brain, a thought finally came to you. 

One month ago, walking by a local cat cafe, Spencer spotted the most beautiful calico. She had fluffy hair, one black ear, one orange. Her little paws were white and she was so well mannered. Spencer and yourself had gone in immediately and he had spent your time inside doting on the calico, whose name, you learned, was Calypso. 

You bolted up from the bed and out into the living room, finding your purse sitting among the unpacked boxes. You shot out to the car, and without a second thought, drove the ten minutes to the cat cafe. 

You said a silent prayer that the cat was still available as you pulled into a parking space across the street. As if on cue, you looked up to see the same cat lounging lazily in the window sill, green eyes poised on you. 

The adoption process was quick, quicker than you anticipated. Fifty dollars later, you were on the road with Calypso in the passenger seat, sitting demurely in the carrier the shelter had provided you with to take her home in. 

On the way home you had to stop at PetSmart to pick up a litter box, a few toys, and a scratching post with the hope that your new furry friend would not decimate your new furniture. Calypso remained in the carrier, watching quietly from the shopping cart as you agonized over which treats to get. 

Soon enough, you were on your way home. The moment you walked through the front door, you set the carrier down and allowed Calypso to wander free. She was tentative at first, gently sniffing the floor and getting the feel for her new surroundings. However, after ten minutes, she perched herself on the kitchen counter, looking quite like the queen of her own castle. 

You took this chance to open her new toys and scatter them about the house, as well as find a secluded corner for her litterbox.

For the rest of the day, the cat watched you unpack boxes. Beady green eyes noting your movements until you disappeared from her sight. Occasionally, if you left the room for too long, you would turn to find that she had followed you. In these moments, you would stop to offer her a gentle petting and giggle as she flopped down on the floor, furry belly up to the sky. 

It was six hours after his phone call that Spencer arrived at home. 

2:19 a.m. was the time on your watch when you heard the lock turn and rose to greet him at the door. Calypso, seated in the corner of the room on a side table, perked her ears up at the new noise coming from the entrance. 

Spencer locked the door behind him and turned to face you, reaching out and pulling you in for a long hug. 

You rubbed your hands up and down his back. “Are you happy to be home?” you asked, your voice muffled by his shoulder. 

“You have no idea,” he said. He pulled away only to examine the living room. Spencer nodded in approval. “It looks really good in here. You did a great job.”

You smiled warmly, nerves settling in your stomach as you realized he’d not yet noticed the cat in the corner of the room, who was still watching him with suspicious eyes. 

“Spencer, I have to tell you something,” you said, wanting to explain yourself for doing something as impulsive as adopting a cat while he was away. 

His face suddenly became very serious. “What is it? Did something happen while I was gone? Are you alright?” 

The questions came quickly and you shook your head to reassure him. “No, Spencer, it’s nothing bad. Here, come look.” You grabbed his hand and pulled him forward until the two of you were standing behind your couch in the middle of the living room. 

“Look around,” you said. 

Spencer’s tired eyes traversed the room. You watched as they landed on paintings, the television, the clock, and nearly everything but the cat who sat entirely still in the corner. 

“I don’t understand,” he said, brow furrowed. “Did you make some major change I don’t know about? If you did, I’m sure that it’s f-”

At that moment Calypso jumped off the side table. The soft thump that accompanied her landing on the floor was enough to stop Spencer in his tracks. Finally, you watched as the feline caught his eye. 

“You didn’t,” Spencer said, his voice barely above a whisper. His reaction wasn’t telling you much, and you were afraid that he was not pleased. 

You started trying to explain yourself. “Well, I knew that you had a long week. I wanted to do something special. I know how much you enjoyed spending time with her at the cafe and now that we have the space I figured…”

You trailed off. In the time you had spoken, Calypso had crossed the room, climbed the couch, and began butting her head up against Spencer’s hand. Panic was setting in. Why wasn’t he reacting? 

Just when you were about to push him to say something, you looked up to see a large grin plastered on his face. Spencer gently wrapped his arms around the cat and picked her up, holding her close and petting in between her ears. 

“This is the most thoughtful present ever. I love her,” he said. His excitement reminded you of a little child and pulled at your heartstrings in a way that could have made you cry. 

You sighed in relief. “I’m so glad.” 

With Calypso still draped over one arm, Spencer reached out for you, pulling you to his side. He planted a soft kiss on the top of your head. “Thank you so much. I love her. I love you,” he said, smile still evident on his face. 

“I love you too,” you said, turning to face Calypso, who looked all too content to be wrapped up in Spencer’s arms. 

“I think she’s trying to steal my man,” you joked, nudging Spencer on the side. 

Spencer laughed. “I don’t think you have to worry too much about that. My heart has room for two lovely ladies.”

Now that s2 has had some time to settle, how would you all rank all the OFMD episodes? I don't care about how good you think they are objectively (because I know if I was ranking them from what I think are objectively best to worst, that would be a different list entirely), I care about how you rank them personally!

For me, the ranking goes:

Fun and Games, s2e4. She's everything to me. Ed and Stede making up and communicating, Ed's cute little smile, Izzy being a fucking nightmare (affectionate). Perfect episode in my eyes.

The Innkeeper, s2e3. I don't even need to justify this one, you all KNOW.

Mermen, s2e8. I know she's a little messy but I love her. My go-to comfort episode and a happy ending to the season. Ed and Stede fighting to each other across the beach is my favorite scene in OFMD full stop.

The Art of Fuckery, s1e6. I looove her. The OG bathtub scene that spawned a million bathtub scenes in fanfics, plus Stede beating Izzy in a duel and the best open in s1.

Act of Grace, s1e9. Solid episode, first kiss, Ed saving Stede's life, a heartbreaking ending. Fantastic.

The Curse of the Seafaring Life, s1e5. This to me is the perfect mid-season episode of a show like OFMD. It's fun, I love it, plus we get a moonlight kiss!

We Gull Way Back, s1e8. I love when Calico Jack is here fucking stuff up.

Wherever You Go, There You Are, s1e10. It's hard watching this now to believe this is how our show ended for over a year! Now when I watch it I think about how far they've come.

This is Happening, s1e7. It's just great, it's only so low because I like the first eight more!

Red Flags, s1e2. This one hurts me and I love it. It's a damn compelling episode of television.

Calypso's Birthday, s2e6. I can see why people don't like this one but I'm willing to give it a pass for a lot of shit. I really like Ned Low.

Discomfort in a Married State, s1e4. It's a wonderful episode. The bad thing about ranking OFMD episodes is I love all of them so I feel bad for putting one of my beautiful children all the way down here.

Impossible Birds, s2e1. Solid season opener that also hurts me. I love it.

The Best Revenge is Dressing Well, s1e5. Lovely episode, I just get sad when those racist assholes are mean to Ed :(

A Damned Man, s1e2. Again this episode is great and I hate that it's so low

Pilot, s1e1. This is a super solid pilot and I love it! Sets Stede up so so well. I love watching it and marvelling at how far he's come!

Man on Fire, s2e7. This is a fine episode! I like watching it and it's got a lot to love! I just like it better when you watch it with Merman as opposed to on its own.

The Gentleman Pirate, s1e3. It's fine, just not as good as the others! My cringefail friend Stede is especially cringefail in this one but I adore Spanish Jackie's introduction here and of course Our Prayer at the end!

Discussion time!

(I try to understand what the writers intentions were, not how it turned out)

I was thinking about the abundance of antagonists in s2 and what was the problem.

Prince Rincky was cool for one episode, showing us how much Stede has changed since we first met him. It was cool. And he left him, as if letting his past behind. They didn't need to go further with it, the message was clear.

Then Ned Low, Ed's antagonist, symbolizing his violent part or past. Hurting people for fun ("love a good maim"). Showing us this time how much Ed has changed.

But wait, what happened to Ned? He lost his crew because of Stede, and then Stede killed him, even tho Ed asked him not to.... Everything Stede accused Ned of is eerily similar to what Ed did to Stede's crew. His suicide plan finally worked and destroyed Calypso's birthday. And it's tragic and clever at the same time: Ed's attempts to redeem himself destroyed by the memory of his sins.

But now things get a bit messed up. The symbols get mixed up. (I won't even talk about how Stede sees this whole confrontation, it's already complicated enough) So is Ned the symbol of Ed's guilt or his violent past? Those are two different things. Stede killing Ned for things similar to what Ed did also means a lot. Did they... Did they put all of Ed’s darkness in Ned and made Stede get rid of it? Is this where they hid his redemption arc? Stede yeeted all the negativity from his ship? (is this some kind of parallel to Izzy's banishment in s1e6? Or Calico Jack in e8?)

Ok...

And then there's Zheng. Don't get me wrong, she was great. But why did they add her to the story? To show how a pirate ship could work? To show us how shitty of a captains Stede and Ed were? To tell Stede that sometimes talking things out isn't enough? But he knew that already?? S1 was about Stede proving that he could win by being clever instead of violent! Or did I read it wrong?

Was Zheng the reason Stede asked Izzy to teach him? Fine, let's say she was. But that doesn't explain her presence in the story after episode 3. Stede meets her again in episode 7 and gets his ass kicked, showing he's still pathetic.

And I'm confused again, wait. Stede outsmarted her before thanks to his plan and his crew's help. So... was Stede trying to be cool like Zheng this whole season, thinking this is what people want from him? And his duel with Zheng was a desperate attempt to prove to his crew and himself that he's worth something? Because Stede could still be insecure about his inadequacy and now that he left everything for this life, this was everything he had. Ed left him and if his crew will too, then he's alone. That would be a proof of him being worthless, someone people just tolerate and leave at first occasion. Great angst, where's the payoff in the next episode tho? Or anything really. You're telling me that crying, pathetic man is now all cool with being a failure? Since WHEN? When was this whole arc of Stede accepting he's a mid pirate?? Surely not in e7. Whatever, let's leave it.

What was the whole deal with Prince Ricky and Izzy. I've already said, Ricky should be left in e1 and Izzy didn't need his antagonist. What for? His arc was about healing and opening up to the crew. We know he realized his mistakes, we know he got attached and protective towards them from e1! They showed this in e1-6! The speech was nice but was it necessary? To me it was like spelling out something they already shown. We knew Izzy realized the crew is more important than his selfish desires when he shot Ed or when he worked with Stede to protect them.

Did they try to say that good, not selfish anymore, Stede helped an old time pirate to be a better self and bad, selfish Stede killed the pirate. The piracy. (god, my head hurts) Fuck, I don't know anymore, help guys. It only works if we go with that crazy metaphor of Stede killing the darkness ect. So good Stede understood and worked with pirates to reform piracy being one of them, and bad Stede didn't understood, didn't work with pirates and was rejected, so he destroyed them, or something????

Was Ricky's come back something like Ned to Ed? His past biting him in the ass? Stede thinking piracy was the parties, the earing, the killing, the fame? The shallow understanding of what piracy means? And just like Izzy was teaching Stede, now Izzy explains it to Ricky?? So unnecessarly spelling out again.

Anyway, Ricky was good in e1, Zheng could be great for Stede's arc if they didn't forget about it in e8, but still there was too much of her for no reason really (we don't need main relationship's dynamics paralleled on secondary characters). Ned had potential, but they went to weird places with it.

Strange magic doesn't put a damper on his blossoming romance with Stede, however. Mature, with a hopeful rather than happy ending.

i'll say the pacing didn't really bother me THAT much this season until this ep, but now i'm mourning those extra two episodes we didn't get because they would've been complete game changers like

1) other people have said this but an extra episode between 2x05 and 2x06 of Ed and Stede trying to "take it slow" for one (1) day + some much needed jimarchie oluzheng development pre-oluzheng reunion + fun crew shenanigans + reintroduce the ricky threat earlier, give it time to sizzle

> Calypso's Birthday = 2x07

> Man on Fire = 2x08 (and their separation would perfectly mirror the Calico Jack breakup, which was 1x08!)

and then

2) Mermen gets split into two episodes:

2x09 = from Ed failing to be a fisherman to the all-pirate alliance with Zheng (more time for the tension and conflict to really build up, plus the successful love confession and kiss paralleling the failed love confession and kiss from 1x09)

2x10 = from the suicide mission to the ending (again better pacing re: tension and conflict, more breathing time for Izzy's death to really settle emotionally and make the reason for that death more transparent before moving on to the inn and the wedding, more time with each loose thread from this season that's being wrapped —Zheng and the crew, where everybody's going with their lives, what the Revenge will be up to and how that might look like, Ricky's reaction to this whole thing, and then on that, setting up what's coming next season better)

Rachelypsobeth (RACHEL X CALYPSO X ANNABETH) HEADCANONS

• They’re all dating.

• Rachel is the most affectionate, and Calypso really likes forehead kisses. Annabeth isn’t really, but she does like cuddling during movies.

• They live near the beach and go there often — Rachel paints while dancing, Annabeth sketches and builds sandcastles, and Calypso collects seashells and observes.

• Calypso and Annabeth braid each other’s hair.

• Annabeth can’t cook, so she just buys them birthday cakes and asks Rachel and/or Calypso to decorate it.

• Calypso and Rachel make their own jewellery

• Rachel is asexual

• Calypso always buys them sweets/chocolate when they’re upset or on their period.

• Calypso’s really into natural remedies (from her time on the island) and makes them for period cramps

• Annabeth repeatedly gets annoyed at Calypso’s dried herbs in the kitchen, but eventually she likes it and even adds mistletoe so she has an excuse to kiss her while she’s cooking.

• Rachel and Annabeth write fun stories together all the time

• Rachel reads them out very loudly and makes everyone enact them

• They all have commitment rings in their own styles

• Rachel and Annabeth practice fighting on the beach while Calypso watches, cheering them both on. Rachel always ends up giggling on the sand - she can’t fight her seriously - much to Annabeth’s dismay.

• Annabeth always splashes the girls with saltwater and chases them into the water

• When not painting on the beach, Rachel will try her best to save all the little creatures during low-tide.

• Annabeth hugs Rachel after scary Oracle visions and whispers, “It’s okay, I’m here,” over and over again.

• Calypso usually joins in, often making herbal teas to calm her

• They always invite everyone over for the holidays because they know that Annabeth struggles with her family and loneliness.

• Only Annabeth formally works, though Rachel often gets wealth through her oracle status. Calypso doesn’t, though she occasionally sells her homemade products.

• They go travelling as often as they can. Annabeth plans the schedule, which is very packed due to them all wanting to see different things. Annabeth visits museums, libraries, and architectural sites while Rachel spends her time in art galleries. Calypso, on the other hand, is happy to go anywhere natural.

• Calypso and Annabeth discuss history so so much

• During pride festivals, Rachel celebrates extremely loudly and goes all-out. Calypso is much quieter about it, but she loves joining in on the floats or merchandise booths. Annabeth doesn’t dress up, but she does carry lgbtq+ messages on signs and scream at anyone who insults them.

• Rachel and Calypso are obsessed with Christmas. They’re the only reason the other decorates the house and tree, and it is very colourful. Rachel makes them all pumpkin spice lattes (which are her favourite) once they’ve finished. Calypso always adds candy canes to it — she says she loves warm and minty combos.

• They’re all very into activism. Annabeth advocates for everything she can, but especially feminism and BLM. Rachel does this too. Calypso hates loud noises but attends these peaceful protests, especially when they don’t have music. In particular, though, she is an environmentalist and volunteers for several endangered animal organisations.

• Calypso is claustrophobic, so Rachel holds her hand whenever they have to be in a small space. Annabeth built their home and bedrooms so they were spacious enough for her.

• Calypso gives them small gifts frequently.

• They all wanted their own cat, so they all got one; Annabeth has a black tabby, Rachel a small calico, and Calypso a grey and white stray she found on a farm.

• Rachel and Calypso often have date nights where they pick strawberries from their nearby farm, paint them, make dessert together, and then cuddle under the stars.

• Annabeth prefers to go out to dinner, have a romantic walk, and then watch scary movies. Rachel and Calypso tend to laugh at the people’s stupidity but Piper gets scared quite easily.

• Rachel dyes shirts for them, and Annabeth flaunts them at work.

• Calypso shops at the farmer’s markets but also grows her own fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

• They all watch the sunset together every night (well, most nights — sometimes Annabeth is busy at work, and Rachel is off doing oracle things). It’s one of their favourite pastimes.

We have a lot of alters that are nonhuman!

(Most of our nonhuman appearing alters are object heads, and just conceal their face. But I'll only be discussing alters that identify as nonhuman. Also some alters I'll not go into detail about them as they either don't wish to be shared online at this time or we just don't know much about them yet! (: )

Aether 🪶 (they/zie/avi/sand/desert) : an avian who loves to fly around and explore, they help our cartographer alter map the inner world!

Azathoth 🕸️ (it/they/she) : one of our "gods" of the inner world with the most authority. It is a terrifying shadow creature that closely resembles The Beast's silhouette from Over The Garden Wall mixed with a wither skeleton from Minecraft

Cake/Kate 🌌 (name/she), Cirno 👻 (he/it/ecto), and Eleanor 🕊️ (she/her) who are all ghosts!
