So so XL just wanted to protect his kingdom but there was someone who came before him and was in a very similar situation centuries ago who was twisted and jaded by how Heaven turned its back on him and therefore projected and inflicted trauma onto XL which turned him into a twisted and jaded version of himself until The Black Sword pierced him in the middle and held him to the ground so that he could wallow in defeat. And then a kindly unsuspecting man came by and set a straw hat on his head to shield him and that’s what made XL trust humanity again and tell his tormentor that he would never become like him. And then centuries later, XL became a mentor to someone who was in a very similar situation as he was and even though he tried to break the cycle of violence, it still came to the point where LQ vowed to never become as twisted and jaded as XL had been at one point and XL‘s only response is to laugh and/or cry. And then when his tormentor is finally defeated, it is The Black Sword that pins him down through the middle that makes him realize his defeat and it is a kindly unsuspecting man that lays a straw hat on his head to end everything and the cycle of violence can finally end. And yeah TGCF is a story of immortal love triumphing all evil but it’s also a story of students & mentors and unearned kindness in the most unworthy of circumstances and XL will crack his skull open against rocks and LQ will shatter the bones in his arms endlessly before either become like their mentors and even though their mentors have irreversibly destroyed them, they’re still here. They’re still here.

if i had a dollar for every time a religious missionary knocked on my door to "spread the good news" while i was actively in an acute mental health crisis i'd have 2 dollars, which isnt a lot but also. how many times does this have to happen before they stop coming.

Our mental health has been in such an interestingly terrible place for the last month or so. Genuinely kind of fascinating to watch from different internal angles....like watching the ocean ebb and flow and change temperament at random sometimes based on weather or the moon or something. Like this shit is just terrible

See, the thing about the Amy episode that makes Dean’s actions so reprehensible is not only the part where he doesn’t trust Sam and goes behind his back to kill Amy or even the hypocrisy of Dean ‘you can’t change what you are so you’re going to kill someone eventually’ Winchester sparing the kid right after stabbing his mom, it’s that Amy is very explicitly supposed to be a Sam parallel. There is no other way about it, from the they’re both freaks part of it to Dean dropping the line about ‘the other shoe’ right before he kills her, she is Sam, how Dean reacts to her is supposed to give us insight into how he feels about Sam. And Dean. kills her.
The not very subtle subtext being that Dean is ready to off Sam if he goes too far off the deep end? He’s aggressive and mistrustful of Sam at every turn in the episode, lays the feet of it all at Sam’s hallucinations maybe leading him astray, but end of the day, Sam’s crimes here are A) was tortured in Hell and B) is traumatized by that in a way that makes Dean’s life more difficult.
And it is hard to watch. To spend this whole episode with Sam being completely functional on his own, making a rational decision based on past experience and on all the information about Amy he has available, and for the episode to end with, ‘but yeah, if dean thinks sam goes too far, he’s probably gonna kill him. because sam can’t change or be fixed, so it’s for the good of everyone that he be put down.’

In defense of the original, while I do agree the episodic vibes were a bit much at times, and it was something I kinda had to work my way through slowly rather than binging all in one...
I do kinda prefer the more gradual approach to laying out the information; getting to know both the setting and who Vash is as a person and the different facets of both, before getting the context that lets it all click into place. Plus the main quartet having ample time to grow together so that later developments have stronger emotional weight.
I will agree that Knives definitely suffered in focus, and I am interested in how Stampede handles him, but admittedly he wasn't really what I watched Trigun for in the first place. ^^;
yeah my gripe is less with the way the setting and characters were handled and more with the way the. actual plot was handled. it honest to god felt to me like they realized about halfway through their run that they didnt have enough episodes left to get the backstory in in a cohesive way so they just shoved it all into one episode and pretended that that explanation didn't create more questions than it answered. you spend 20 episodes teasing your audience like "ooooh what is vash?? clearly hes not human!! clearly there's something going on!!! don't you want to know whats going on?? keep watching and you'll totally understand whats going on!!" and then your big reveal is that. He Is Not Human. which is something that any idiot who has watched the last 20 episodes has already figured out. the question the audience ACTUALLY has at that point in the runtime is what, EXACTLY, is vash, and what the context is behind the conflict he and knives are in. the backstory episode explains that Knives Is Here, and it gives context to the setting and everything, but it pissed me off that it STILL didn't answer the actual mysteries i cared about, i.e. vash's real identity and the thing with the gun and his fucking arm and knives's motivations and everything. maybe that gets answered in the last episode that i neglected to watch but personally I prefer a story where i UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON by the time the final confrontation hits. with trigun it got to a point where vash was going out for the final battle with knives and i STILL didn't know who vash was, who knives was, where they came from, or what the hell their motivations were. that just made that final confrontation seem so wholly uninteresting to me that i didn't even feel like watching it. it was like "hey look vash is fighting a cardboard cutout that he is Afraid Of. Why? lmao idk man. probably has something to do with that weird spaceship that shows up in one whole episode before this point. not going to tell you how tho." I think some writers have this tendency to think that mystery = good writing and that not revealing anything to your audience will consistently draw them in for more, but that only works for so long. after 20 episodes of virtually net 0 information it got to feel like I was being strung along and like my questions were never going to be answered, so I gave up on the show in the final hour. Again, i'm not saying it was BAD necessarily and i understand the context in terms of writing and production that led to the show being produced that way but i think it really noticeably suffers due to the fact that it refuses to give the audience ANYTHING but crumbs of information for about 80% of it's runtime. that being said. i did genuinely like a lot of it. it has its moments. im not trying to discourage anyone from watching it or anything lol i just think stampede is a little more successful in keeping the viewer engaged in the story throughout by constantly feeding you bits of information and actually answering your questions as they become plot-relevant.

I can take them making the Crosby/Landra thing explicit (even when keeping it vague would have been very doable and truer to his own memoir) but him pushing her about what she actually was doing was annoying. The call we'll see next week is fine, but whining about it in a pub instead of just being like "haha pretty sure my badass former-roomate is a spy, crazy times we live in, ammirite?" rubbed me the wrong way.

finished profiler profiled. im sorry i had no analysis even though it's an episode that would lend very well to analysis but honestly it's like fifteen consecutive gut punches i couldnt.
anyway. so this was my second time watching profiler profiled (got up to 5x01 in my first watch, couldnt watch for a while and started again, got up to 2x01 in my next watch, couldnt watch for a while. introduced my girlfriend to it and we're stuck on 2x05 because she's very prone to secondhand embarrassment and is nervous about the ending (which i spoiled for her because she asked me to). and honestly? i think i might have had a harder time getting through this ep the second time than i will getting through revelations.
not that revelations isnt going to be extremely hard to get through, and if profiler profiled does wind up being harder, it will be a pretty close tie. i think mostly it's just how real profiler profiled is. carl buford is such a realistic and terrifying portrayal of what a lot of serial predators actually look like. he's not a mustache twirling villain. he's charming, he's likable, he's admired and respected and trusted. of course a lot of it is a mask and we see that in the closing minutes of profiler, profiled, but in his daily life nobody knew.
and that's true frighteningly often.
(this is not me comparing traumas or how rough the episodes are, just talking about me and my reactions to them)

ok so @gingerandcelery told me about an unshot episode called "Knowledge" which was filmed towards the end of j&a where essentially the premise is amir and jake dissect their relationship dynamics
and they didn't shoot it because it wasn't funny enough
but there's a patreon episode where they read the script, and IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ACTUALLY GROUNDBREAKING IN TERMS OF CONFIRMING THINGS IN WORDS IN REGARDS TO JANDA
for those who don't have the patreon, essentially, amir asks jake a weird quesion because he wants to know more. jake is like "your questions are weird ". and amir is like "i dont have a lot going on for me, so i place my value on sharpening these blurry little images of you line by line pixel by pixel. what scares me if what will happen to me when the picture is complete. i guess'll have to find a new jake to annoy or some shit". and at that, jake starts answering his questions really quickly. and amir's still talking, he's like, "the funny thing about the painting in my mind is that it'll never be sharp enough. i keep getting half the distance closer to the end, but in a way, i'll never arrive at that destination". and jake goes "I know". amir goes, "it's like i know you better than everyone on earth, even your family". jake goes, "i know". AND THEN FUCKING THEN AMIR GOES, "and the best part is whether you like it or not, you've grown reliant on my admiration" and jakes like "... i know". and then it ends on amir asking jake what his second favorite fruit is.
and afterwards, they talk about how they were coming to an end of the show and were probably just trying do a meta commentary on how the character's relationships would never end
SCREAMING SO FUCKING LOUD WHAT THE FUCK IS THISSSS. why is this a top 15 episode for me and it's not even released. im going to THROW UP WHAT THE HELL?! JAKE SAYING I KNOW . Im haunted dear reader. i am haunted.

Honestly? Did I want more from DTAMHD? Yes, I did. I wanted something signifying actual progression for Dennis' character (even just a crumb of genuine growth) , and I sincerely don't think we got that. However... we did get a fascinating insight into the process of his mind. Dennis' level of self-denial is so ironic and profound. He can't acknowledge the inevitability that he's middle-aged.
(I swear this episode honestly has given me an alt hc, that the show is based in his mind; because logistically, a man of his lifestyle and malnourishment could not commit the feats he is constantly sailing through. TGGB & DTAMHD... back-to-back? What happened to his hand? Did he even sprain it? Or is he just the most dramatic brat in the gang - clearly the latter.)
It is important to note that he didn’t fix the actual problem. He momentarily masked the symptoms, but ignore long-term help with blood pressure medicine is not going to fix the issue, nor is it going to protect him from fucking keeling over in a stressful situation (when he's not in a contained and quiet Doctor's exam room) and his blood pressure spikes.
I'm honestly a little jaded at this point (16 Fucking Seasons of crumbs, y'all), but if one were to continue 'trusting the structure' this episode conveyed a lot.
The B Plot: The pressure cooker. The metaphor parallels the building pressure Dennis quick-tempered bouts of rage. So, to toss out a little 'cat-in-the-wall' conjecture here: The pressure cooker is Dennis, but we all saw him eat that bloody diamond in the end and we all heard Mac's speech about coal turning into diamonds under massive pressure. Dennis' experience is a theory of pressure, he daydreams it all in the span of a minute or so. He's roleplaying with hypothetical obstacles. There's no risk. Maybe Dennis, isn't the pressure cooker, but the coal.
If I were to try and take anything hopeful out of this episode, it would be the way the narrative is showing us that this episode acknowledged that Dennis isn't ready yet. It's not his turn to break. It's going to take real, substantial pressure to get that diamond.
It was a hell of a misdirect (and honestly a little bit of a slap in the face), but if these characters live in the real world, where people are bound by the laws of mortality, then Dennis should have his time.
Genuinely, who fucking knows?
I'm not hating on the episode. We all know this is the trashy dick joke sitcom. I just thought that if Mac & Charlie could have moments of genuine heartbreak, culminating in deep catharsis, that maybe Dennis could have that too.... but no.
Can't wait to see the sunny dudebros miss the point & proclaim Dennis Reynolds - SA victim, traumatized individual with an emotionally tumultuous personality disorder - the new Andrew Tate.
I'm sorry, but yeah. I'm a little miffed. It was all a dream, and everything goes Dennis' way. Y'all I'm fucking tired. This was a great episode for Glenn, but a fucking frustrating episode for Dennis. I may have wanted a little macden, but all I cared about was seeing Dennis face the limitations of his mortality, to see that he's failing his body and his brain. He didn't have to actually take the medicine (I wouldn't expect him to), but Goddammit, everything seems to work out in his delusional favor. So, of course he's going to continue being delusional, and probably only change for the worse.
I'll say it: I wanted a broken Dennis, and we did not get that. He didn't even crack, the unbearble and apparently now canonical Golden God. That episode's title was intended to tease sunnyblr.
Excuse the plethora of tags. I just kept getting more irritated.
