There were certain rules that you as a villain have to follow if you want to be successful. Lex Luthor knew these rules well. The first, one which he’d kept for a very very long time, was to avoid attachment. More specifically to avoid becoming attached to anyone. You should encourage others to like you, if they liked you, if they owed you, then they would do what you wanted and what you needed. But caring for others only led to weaknesses.

Lex had no one that he cared for or trusted. No living family, no lover to warm his bed. Not that that had ever been a priority for him. The closest Lex had to a ‘friend’ was his android Mercy, an android he created. Lex supposed that the closest relationship he had was with Superman. Their antagonistic relationship where he tried to kill Superman and Superman tried to have him arrested was the most socializing outside of work Lex did per month.

A lonely life perhaps but one that Lex reveled in. He had what he wanted and what he didn’t have he could get with his power. Lex was able to follow that first rule of villainy up until one raining evening just outside Metropolis. His car was going towards his home when something crashed through the glass roof window. Something being a glowing teenager. He had white hair and bright green eyes and he was wearing what appeared to be some sort of jumpsuit.

He landed right in Lex’s lap, covered in wounds and emaciated. Three moments after he landed a bright halo of light appeared around his torso before spreading out. Suddenly, laying there on his lap was a human teenager, bleeding red blood and reaching unconsciousness.

“Sorry.” He said right before passing out.

Mercy had stopped the car, as she’d been programmed to do. Lex looked down at the meta teenager with a thoughtful look on his face.

“Mercy, continue home and contact Dr. Matthews. He has a new patient in serious condition.”

“Yes sir.”

It took a full day of rest for the unnamed meta to wake up. When he did Lex was there, introducing himself and offering comfort and safety. The boy introduced himself as ‘Adam’, a fake name obviously but Lex didn’t call him out on it. Lex made no reference to the boy’s meta-abilities. Instead, he offered a place to rest and recuperate and all of the food the boy could consume (which was a lot). Through his security cameras he saw the boy’s uncontrollable powers, new he guessed.

It took only a week for the boy to break down and use his powers in front of Lex. Once that happened the flood gates opened. Danny was his real name, and his parents had tried to kill him once they found out about his powers. Lex learnt about the source of the powers and Danny’s lack of control. His plan was going along perfectly.

Lex didn’t know much about powers, but from those he talked to with them, the key to control was practice. So, Lex built a training room for the half-ghost to practice. Then, when he destroyed that, Lex built a stronger one. (He used plans from an old ‘trap Superman’ room. Lex always appreciated being able to recycle things.) Soon, really once Danny recovered completely, a schedule arose. In the mornings, Danny and Lex would have breakfast together. Lex would quiz the boy on different things. Anything from strategy to science to history to literature. Then Lex would go to work. Danny would stay in the home and spend the morning studying. Lex wasn’t going to have a stupid tool, so the boy had an online coursework to learn what he needed to know.

Then Lex would usually receive a message from Danny around lunch time. The boy would let him know how his lessons were going and ask how his work was. Lex didn’t tell Danny to message him, he also didn’t tell him to stop. Something inside of him enjoyed the unsolicited attention. Danny was asking not because he had to but because he wanted to. He was curious, he cared about Lex.

After lunch the boy would use Lex’s computer simulations to train with his powers. He worked his muscles and his reflexes against training simulators and pushed his abilities to their limit. When Lex got home around dinner Danny would be waiting for him eagerly to talk about how his training was going. They would have dinner together. At first those dinners were solely focused on the boy’s abilities and health. But they expanded.

Danny would ask about Lex and Lex would indulge him, telling him stories from his life. Danny would reciprocate. Lex found that, beyond having very useful powers, Danny also possessed intelligence, curiosity, and eagerness in spades. Without realizing it Lex started to feel rather fond of the boy. He reminded him of Lex’s younger years before the trials that had shaped him into the man he was. Young and full of passion.

The months passed and they grew closer. Lex learnt about Danny’s two best friends that knew about his accident and with whom he had kept in contact. Danny met Mercy and even visited Lex’s office a few times to see him at work. Since the boy could turn invisible Lex had no way of knowing how often that actually was. He started to try and teach the boy strategy. How to defeat his enemies and how to control and manipulate. He didn’t teach Danny too much, he wouldn’t want to make a tool more powerful than Lex himself.

Daniel was an apt pupil up until the point that Lex suggested using his powers for personal gain. The teen’s vehement denial of using his powers that way was peculiar. Didn’t Danny see what his powers could do? What that sort of power and control could mean for him, for them both? With Lex’s tutelage and guidance, they would be unstoppable. Lex tried everything he could think of.

Every evening for dinner it became a test to see if he could shake Danny of his morals, of his will. But Danny remained resolute. Every time he argued for the right thing. He wanted to be kind. He wanted to help. Not to abuse and harm. Lex realized a little too late that he had accidentally taken in a hero and nothing about that would change. There were some heroes who could be convinced of the error of their ways but then there were those like Superman, like Danny.

Abruptly he saw his future. Danny would soon put on a suit and try and fight evil. Lex wouldn't be able to stop him from doing it. Unless Lex started to torture him and break him down piece by piece. Lex recoiled from the idea of harming Danny. The idea of anyone harming him was wrong. It was then that he realized what had happened.

Lex had been sitting in his office, planning out his next ‘kill Superman plan’ when it hit him right in the face.

“I’ve become accustomed to him.”

He’d grown used to Danny. Grown to like his presence in his life. Meals were no longer necessities for him but rather something to enjoy and savor. Conversations and laughter filled his life where there had been silence. He had loved the silence, reveled in being untouched and untouchable. But now? Now he’d adapted to Danny, and he did not wish to return to how things were previously.

“Damn. Damn. Damn."

What objections would you actually accept to AI?

Roughly in order of urgency, at least in my opinion:

Problem 1: Curation

The large tech monopolies have essentially abandoned curation and are raking in the dough by monetizing the process of showing you crap you don't want.

The YouTube content farm; the Steam asset flip; SEO spam; drop-shipped crap on Etsy and Amazon.

AI makes these pernicious, user hostile practices even easier.

Problem 2: Economic disruption

This has a bunch of aspects, but key to me is that *all* automation threatens people who have built a living on doing work. If previously difficult, high skill work suddenly becomes low skill, this is economically threatening to the high skill workers. Key to me is that this is true of *all* work, independent of whether the work is drudgery or deeply fulfilling. Go automate an Amazon fulfillment center and the employees will not be thanking you.

There's also just the general threat of existing relationships not accounting for AI, in terms of, like, residuals or whatever.

Problem 3: Opacity

Basically all these AI products are extremely opaque. The companies building them are not at all transparent about the source of their data, how it is used, or how their tools work. Because they view the tools as things they own whose outputs reflect on their company, they mess with the outputs in order to attempt to ensure that the outputs don't reflect badly on their company.

These processes are opaque and not communicated clearly or accurately to end users; in fact, because AI text tools hallucinate, they will happily give you *fake* error messages if you ask why they returned an error.

There's been allegations that Mid journey and Open AI don't comply with European data protection laws, as well.

There is something that does bother me, too, about the use of big data as a profit center. I don't think it's a copyright or theft issue, but it is a fact that these companies are using public data to make a lot of money while being extremely closed off about how exactly they do that. I'm not a huge fan of the closed source model for this stuff when it is so heavily dependent on public data.

Problem 4: Environmental maybe? Related to problem 3, it's just not too clear what kind of impact all this AI stuff is having in terms of power costs. Honestly it all kind of does something, so I'm not hugely concerned, but I do kind of privately think that in the not too distant future a lot of these companies will stop spending money on enormous server farms just so that internet randos can try to get Chat-GPT to write porn.

Problem 5: They kind of don't work

Text programs frequently make stuff up. Actually, a friend pointed out to me that, in pulp scifi, robots will often say something like, "There is an 80% chance the guards will spot you!"

If you point one of those AI assistants at something, and ask them what it is, a lot of times they just confidently say the wrong thing. This same friend pointed out that, under the hood, the image recognition software is working with probabilities. But I saw lots of videos of the Rabbit AI assistant thing confidently being completely wrong about what it was looking at.

Chat-GPT hallucinates. Image generators are unable to consistently produce the same character and it's actually pretty difficult and unintuitive to produce a specific image, rather than a generic one.

This may be fixed in the near future or it might not, I have no idea.

Problem 6: Kinetic sameness.

One of the subtle changes of the last century is that more and more of what we do in life is look at a screen, while either sitting or standing, and making a series of small hand gestures. The process of writing, of producing an image, of getting from place to place are converging on a single physical act. As Marshall Macluhan pointed out, driving a car is very similar to watching TV, and making a movie is now very similar, as a set of physical movements, to watching one.

There is something vaguely unsatisfying about this.

Related, perhaps only in the sense of being extremely vague, is a sense that we may soon be mediating all, or at least many, of our conversations through AI tools. Have it punch up that email when you're too tired to write clearly. There is something I find disturbing about the idea of communication being constantly edited and punched up by a series of unrelated middlemen, *especially* in the current climate, where said middlemen are large impersonal monopolies who are dedicated to opaque, user hostile practices.

Given all of the above, it is baffling and sometimes infuriating to me that the two most popular arguments against AI boil down to "Transformative works are theft and we need to restrict fair use even more!" and "It's bad to use technology to make art, technology is only for boring things!"

A static crackling fills the air for a moment.

“Yo, Sonic?”

Noah sighs softly as the incandescent lighting above flickers, carefully setting down his soldering gun before he reaches across the work table to grab the walkie-talkie.

“What’s goin’ on, Tails?”

One of the alley cats that usually hangs outside between the garage and the next building makes a noise that’s halfway between a hiss and a yowl, and when Noah looks over to the open window, his brows arch as he realizes it’s dark out already.

“Any sign of Knuckles?”

Noah frowns, pulling his gaze away from the window and over to the empty spot in the corner of the garage— the spot with the motor oil stain on the ground that Noah can never bring himself to clean up.

Even though it’s definitely high time. It’s been months.

He huffs out a soft breath of air, mentally cycling through the answers that are starting to feel almost programmed by this point.

Kris, he ain’t coming back.

Kris, he’s gone, man.

Kris, stop asking me shit I don’t have the answers to, dude.

Instead he goes with something a little more sensitive.

“Negative.”

Kris sighs loudly over the air and Noah almost smiles. Kris gets increasingly more frustrated the more he asks about it. But every couple of days, without fail, he asks.

And every time he does Noah has to look over at that spot of engine oil on the ground and feel his chest do a weird twisting thing that he really doesn’t like.

“Ma wants to know if you’re coming home for dinner tonight.”

Noah rips his gaze away from the empty corner and glances down at his watch.

Fuck, it’s late.

And he had promised to be there for dinner.

“Yeah, I’ma be there.”

He gets up, gathers the things he doesn’t like to leave in the garage overnight— his more expensive tools and some of the gadgets he’s working on fixing for people— into a cardboard box. He tosses the walkie-talkie into his backpack and throws it over one shoulder before he pulls his keys from one of the drawers and starts heading for the door. He’s almost there when the alley cat outside yowls again.

Noah pauses, the sound reminding him to shut the window before he goes.

He crosses the garage, picking up the pencil he’d forgotten behind on the table as he goes. He shoves the yellow No. 2 pencil between his lips and balances the box in his hands with one hand so he can reach up to shut the window and lock it. He sees a dark little shadow scurrying back and forth down in the alley and rolls his eyes as he turns to head for the exit.

Crazy fuckin’ fur ball.

He steps outside then sets the box down right next to him so he can lock up after himself, still rolling the pencil between his lips and digging his top teeth into the shaft, making little indents as he hums softly— probably some tune he’d heard on the radio earlier.

When the door is locked, he shoves the keys into his pocket and turns, bending slightly at the waist so he can reach down and pick up his cardboard box. Only, he stops short— still kind of bent over— when he’s suddenly swathed in a beam of light and he realizes there’s a car parked not four feet from both him and the garage’s doors. Which is strange because almost everyone in the neighborhood knows Noah’s garage has got those old-fashioned swinging doors instead of the sliding ones.

Noah straightens and shields his eyes from the bright headlights keeping him from being able to see if he can recognize the car.

What kind of fucking dumbass leaves his car parked halfway into the street anyway?

The headlights blink off, almost as quickly as they’d come on, and it takes Noah’s eyes a second to adjust.

Wait…

He knows that car. He knows that silver paint and he knows those blue stripes.

That’s not a car at all.

“Miss me, baby boy?” a sly voice rings out from inside the cabin after a brief crackle of radio static.

Noah’s lips part in surprise and the pencil drops silently to the ground, rolling away a few feet before coming to a slow stop.

“Mirage—” Noah gasps out softly, utterly stunned. “You’re…”

He trails off, not sure what to say.

Last time he’d seen the autobot, Mirage had been deathly silent, still stuck in the form of the suit of armor he’d transformed himself into in order to protect Noah during the battle in Peru.

Now?

Now the cybertronian looks completely restored. Shiny and sleek, sporting a fresh coat of paint and looking exactly like he did the first time they’d met— when Noah had tried to boost him from that garage.

“Here? Back for my boy? The sexiest bot on the block?” Mirage lists off and before Noah can even think to reply, the mech goes on. “Yes to all but especially that last one.”

And Noah, he’s not usually the type of person to give into his emotions so quickly— being ex-military, it was just kind of always ingrained into him to shove emotions aside and focus on the task at hand— but something about seeing Mirage again, hearing the bot speak in that energetic little drawl of his, it does something to Noah.

His chest does that twisting motion again.

But it doesn’t necessarily feel like a bad thing this time around.

“Fuck, man,” the words are exhaled shakily. “I…”

Noah’s not sure why his thighs are suddenly feeling kind of numb or why his knees are threatening to buckle but they must be doing some kind of trembling because Mirage takes note.

“Whoa, hey,” the words ring out clearly from the radio as the mech’s altmode inches forward so the Porsche’s front bumper can steady Noah’s unstable legs. “Didn’t think I’d have you swooning over me this fast.”

Noah is still in a well enough frame of mind that the joke registers and he puffs out a short breathy laugh even as he reaches out to place both hands on the warm surface of Mirage’s hood, to not only help stabilize himself but also to kind of prove to himself that this is real, that it’s really happening.

That Mirage is back.

That Mirage hadn’t just forgotten about him.

That the last time he’d seen Mirage get taken away by Arcee and Bumblebee hadn’t been the last time he’d ever see his friend.

That Optimus Prime’s parting words weren’t true.

“Optimus, please,” Noah begs, completely unashamed, his eyes full of tears as Bumblebee carries Mirage away, followed by a sullen Arcee who keeps glancing over her shoulderpad at Noah. “Please, just let me try, man! I can fix him.”

“I am sorry, Noah,” the gruff leader of the autobots tells him, a new sympathy that hadn’t been there in any previous words spoken between them present in the tone of his voice. “But Mirage is in a state you cannot help him out of.”

“I can try!” Noah argues, stomping his foot like a child as the speed of his beating heart continually increases the further Mirage is carried away from him— it kind of feels like the organ is trying to rip itself out of his chest, almost as if he’s going to have a panic attack. “Man, please—! Please, let me help him. I… I owe him that much.”

“You have my gratitude for all you have done to aid us, Noah,” Optimus tells him with an air of finality that clearly means none of this was ever up for any debate. “Primus willing, we will not meet again.”

Noah shakes his head violently, wishing he could physically beat the memory away with a baseball bat.

Mirage’s radio emits a quiet, inquisitive whizzing sound.

Noah’s entire body shudders in response.

“Shit, I missed you, man,” he confesses finally, as Mirage’s engine purrs underneath the palms of his hands. “I thought… fuck.”

He’d thought he wasn’t ever going to see Mirage again.

He’d thought Mirage was dead.

He’d thought…

Review 8: Great small Diagnostic scanner with IMMO capability

As a professional technician I picked this Launch X-431 IMMO Plus as a secondary scanner and after having used it for about a week I have to say that it is very capable, it updates really quickly when there are updates available and it scans every available module on all of the vehicles that I have used it on so far. I have not had a chance to use the IMMO capabilities so far but if they are in line with the diagnostic capabilities then this should be a very good scan tool.

Live data is good and stable so far, just note that it is a small screen so if you choose a lot of data streams you will need to scroll to see them.

This x431 immo plus is the third launch scan tool I have purchased in the last five years. I work on a large variety of vehicles which requires me to have multiple types of scan tools. This tablet has incredible battery life, very very good build quality, excellent hardware and good software. One of the things that impresses me most about this tablet is the four or five day battery life I get out of it, I also have a few Autel scanners and I’m lucky if they last me the day. This scanner does more than just diagnostic testing and actuator manipulations. This scanner can also program new keys. Another impressive feature of this tablet is the add-on capabilities from the purchase of additional modules. This tablet can interface with an oscilloscope multimeter module, battery tester, bore scope and probably some things I’m not even aware of. This is an incredible value for the price. I was very happy to see the small form factor, Good quality storage case and the addition of USB-C charging. This is a great tablet that I highly recommend.

After comparing the IMMO Plus to other ‘comparable’ tools by competing manufacturers, the decision became one of the easiest I could hope for.

Right out of the box, the IMMO Plus is impressive. Easy to set up and register, and featuring a much more intuitive Android OS interface, compared to the earlier Launch X431 units from years ago. It features a high resolution touch screen display that’s glove compatible. The battery life is incredible… With everyday use, the internal rechargeable battery still has at least 35% charge left in it by the end of the week! The Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) is Bluetooth Wireless and comes with a respectably long data cord with OBDII connector and 3 LED Status lights on both sides… You’re not tethered to the vehicle’s OBDII port, which makes actuator testing outside of the vehicle much easier. The included X-Prog3 Immobilizer Expansion Module is an absolute must when it comes to working on IR systems, in addition to I/C and RFID chipped transcievers. Not only has this tool met every key programming challenge I’ve thrown at it (which is the reason I bought it to begin with), it’s also proven itself to be a highly capable full function bi-directional scan tool!

It has quickly become my go-to for regular everyday diagnostics and system testing on every make and model that comes into my bays. It performs every reset imaginable, from oil change to vehicle battery registration. Programmable module replacement couldn’t be easier! Launch also releases improvement and capability updates very regularly, up to once a week. Downloading and installing updates is easier than any other tool I’ve used. This tool has impressed me to the point that I plan on adding more expansion modules in addition to the Battery/Starting/Charging Tester (BST360), such as the Launch TPMS and Launch videoscope to increase its capabilities.
