Regulus Black x reader

A/n TYSM FOR 100 FOLLOWERS HOLY SHIT???? This is the most American baseball game you could possibly think of despite the fact that this supposedly takes place in Britain. Sorry if anything's super inaccurate I'm not a sports person 😕 Anyways requests are open.

"I can't believe I'm actually doing this." Regulus said as you dragged him along behind you.

A cool summer breeze drifted through the air as you and your best friend walked toward the line for the ticket booth.

"I can't either. I thought you'd chicken out on me last minute." You teased and he rolled his eyes.

You'd somehow managed to convince your best friend, Regulus, to accompany you to a baseball game over the summer break. And it really did take some major convincing. His parents were quite adamant about his total lack of engagement with anything even slightly related to muggles. That's why they didn't know about you, and that's why they didn't know Regulus had snuck out to spend time with you.

Once the two of you found a spot in line, you turned to Regulus and smiled. "But, seriously. I'm glad you could make it." You said sweetly.

Regulus' eyes darted down to where your hands were still interlinked.

"Oh," You let go of his hand and nervously looked away. "Sorry."

"No, it's okay." His cheeks turned slightly pink as he put his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

After standing in the line for about 10 minutes, the two of you finally got your tickets and walked into the stadium.

Regulus' eyes seemed to be constantly moving, looking at all of the things he'd probably never seen before.

"Do you wanna get food right now or should we wait?" You asked.

Regulus looked back to you. "They serve food here?"

"I don't have muggle money." Regulus stated.

"You can't go to a muggle sports event without them serving food." You chuckled as you led him to one of the concession stands.

"Who said I was making you pay?" You pulled out your wallet and handed him $20

Regulus blinked, suprised. "You don't have to pay for me, Y/n." He tried to hand the money back.

"No!" You made him close his hand around the money and pushed it back to him. "This is your first time going to a baseball game! You can't go to a baseball game without getting concessions."

Regulus, once again, blushed when you touched his hand. "... Fine."

The two of you were finally in your seats with all of your concessions. You had to explain how the game worked to Regulus and he seemed to understand after a while.

Once the game started Regulus glanced over to you. "So... What team are we supposed to be cheering for?" He asked.

"The guys wearing red." You answered.

"And that's because?"

"Because they're superior."

"What if I don't agree?" He challenged.

"Then I'll leave you at this stadium in the cold and dark to fend for yourself." You replied sarcastically.

He gasped. "You wouldn't!" He chuckled. "You love me too much."

You let a smile play on your lips. "Yeah. You're right."

Regulus felt his cheeks grow hot and he quickly looked away, turning his attention back to the game.

By the time the game was over, the sun was down. Regulus has spent most of the game feeling a bit flustered, blushing everytime your hands brushed against one another, his glances lingering a second too long.

"So, time to go now?"

"Nope." You shook your head. "We've gotta stay for the fireworks."

"The fireworks?"

"Yeah. They shoot off fireworks after the games every weekend." You said. "I wanna watch them, if that's okay with you."

"Yeah... Yeah, it sounds nice."

A few minutes passed before the first firework shot into the sky, painting the night sky with a stunning blue color.

You gasped and excitedly shook Regulus' arm a bit. "They're starting!"

Regulus looked over to you. Your eyes were wide and seemed to sparkle as they looked up at the firework display.

You were so beautiful.

"Y/n..." His voice was soft. Like he was whispering something only your ears would ever get to hear.

"Yeah?" You turned your attention to him.

"I uh..." He felt his heart beat fast. "Can I tell you something?"

You silently nodded and he continued. "I should've told you this way sooner, and I totally get it if you're weirded out by this or whatever... I... Like you. I like you a lot. And I have for a while now."

You sat there, stunned for a moment. His heart beat faster in anticipation for your response.

You finally spoke. "Seriously?"

"Seriously." He nodded. "Is... That okay?"

You paused for a split second. "More than okay." You leaned toward him and softly kissed his lips.

Fireworks went off as he kissed you and he knew this would be the best summer of his life.

Juno, in Roman and Greek mythology, was the wife of Jupiter (aka Zeus), and she was hailed for her unbreakable loyalty to her husband. She's responsible for the pairing of soulmates.

In simple terms, Juno in astrology is known as an asteroid that represents marriage, commitment, and a deep bond to another person. Its energy is always exuded in matters of deep commitment, a marriage, or any long-term romantic union.

💍 Aries Juno 💍

What they want in a marriage: A long-term union that's fun, loving and fiery (and fiery doesn't mean explosive or full of drama, just lit and active). Just those 3 elements can make them feel comfortable, and perhaps committed. They like something where the night is full of passion and fireworks, and the day is full of touchy-touchy (jokingly or sensually). All round though, they want something wholesome and exciting that even in 20 years, they're excited to see you when they/you get back from work.

How they act in a marriage: Their love is pretty basic and standard but far from boring. They don't want anything boring, at all. If it does get boring, they're there to make it fun (but on the low, they want you to make it fun), if it still doesn't get fun, they'll ration it out with you, until you guys are on happy vibes again. If it's constant sad vibes though, it might be the beginning of the end for them.

What to be aware of: They can be pretty demanding. They are the type to test you or challenge you just to see where you stand or whether you'll also meet them at their level and challenge them/be smart. It's like love is sometimes a little chess game to them (in a good way, not in the way of playing games and being wishy washy), so they just wanna see if you can beat them at their own game. So they love a challenge. If you don't, walk away from them. If you like it, or feel like you can handle it, then stay. Oh and they're pretty fast-paced, so they move quick, if you're slow or you're not ready to move with their pace, don't bother.

What they want in a marriage: Something loving, reliable and full of beauty. Something that feels safe and stable, and romantically traditional. To some, what they envision and yearn for in a long-term union could be boring because it's much like a routine and pretty (repetitive/redundant), but it's what makes them feel secure, and that's all they want - security. Then additionally they want to feel relaxed, comfortable, and loved. That's all.

How they act in a marriage: They are very dependable, supportive and romantic omg. A marriage that allows them to express all the babbles they want to say, as well as learn a lot from you and other things (they like to learn and know certain information, perhaps for future sake). They want to laugh with you, watch fun things with you, learn more about life with you beside them, and just overall explore things and explore you and your mind.

How they act in a marriage: They like a multifaceted energy in the union, which is then the type of vibe you could expect from them. Occasionally, they also like to babble about stuff that's on their mind, so you just be accepting and aware of that (the babbles). Be able to be their person they can bounce their ideas off of, or even better, communicate your ideas with them. I mean they do like to try things if we're being real. They also have a sense of duality so you can get the best of all worlds with them. Or none if they're not in the mood with you or just simply want to isolate. What they want in a marriage: A long-term union that has proper care, love, emotions, loyalty, and devotion. They want a partner who will be there for them in times of distress, the same way they are to be there for you in bad times. How they act in a marriage: They are so gentle, and kind, and loving, and tender. They basically give a 'motherly love' (whatever their gender). Funny thing is that they can be selfish or nonchalant sometimes though, so… just be prepared to deal with their fluctuating emotions (though they're not dramatic about them, at all actually, they're shy), and just handle them with care and respect. Other than that though, they're very caring, perhaps too caring for their own good (that they can even seem depressing from another person's pov) - so also beware of that.

What they want in a marriage: Something passionate, and warm, and pretty sociable. Something where you guys are proud of one another and almost like you can brag about your guys' achievements to your friends. That's not the end-all be-all though, they want a long-term union that's fun, with occasional drama and child-like fun, as well as mature where you guys are emotionally supportive and ambitious towards each other's visions and goals.

How they act in a marriage: So… not necessarily that they act or want to be the star of the show, but they do want to feel like they really matter in your world, as well as be able to show you off to the world as well. So basically, they are very confident, and expressive, and pretty creative. And more than likely, their personality is them showing their best side 98% of the time. [Even in 50 years, you have a husband/wife you can be proud of] Unless you piss them off of course, then it gets really ugly.

What to be aware of: They have a side that doesn't care sometimes, but not in a bad way or as if they'll bluntly act like they don't care. They just know what to care about and what not to care about, and practically have 'out of sight, out of mind' subconsciously engraved in their brain. But it doesn't mean they're disloyal, not in the slightest, just nonchalant. [This is for those who want or expect them to care a lot or deeply all the time. Don't. They're okay with their nonchalant selves.]

What they want in a marriage: They want a long-term that is reciprocated, where both of you pour something into the marriage. Both of you guys pour out your love, care, trust, loyalty and generosity. And it is at a level that's not too dramatic, but not underwhelming or boring either. Just cool, calm and charismatic in a sweet way.

How they act in a marriage: They are highly dedicated and faithful, and work at pleasing you as their spouse, their eternal love, their life partner for the rest of their life. They can pick at you a lot jokingly, and annoy you in many ways, but this is all out of love to them. They never really want to upset you in deep ways, and if they do, they're quick to apologize, because they care about you. What to be aware of: They can be pretty nitpicky, and pretty pay too much attention to insignificant details sometimes. This is not always the case. What they want in a marriage: They want something of a balance. And equality. They can be themselves outside of the marriage and not caged in, but they know they're in a commitment and act like it, and would hope you act like it as well. A long-term union that's a mix of traditional as well as new school. They don't necessarily want a marriage, but they want a union that kinda feels like a marriage (filled with respect, loyalty and generosity) but also modern with a twist of modern romance, sensuality and sweet passion.

How they act in a marriage: They're pretty basic [in a good way] with the way they love: communicating with you, showing you they care, going out if you want to, staying in if you want to, considering you when making decisions, being patient, and being faithful. And they're a ball of fun when they can be. I mean, it should probably be noted that Libra rules the 7th House in astrology, and 7H is about marriage and partnerships and one-on-one connections. So they're pretty good at the whole marriage/long-term union thing when they're serious.

What to be aware of: So uhm… they're indecisive as hell. And quite giving/accepting. A bit too much sometimes. [But that only really shows laater in the marriage. Not immediately]. It's as if they don't know what they're worthy of. So, that's something to be aware of before committing long-term with them. Basically if they love you, they are invested in this, so they end up being diplomatic, meaning they give their opinion/idea half the attention and the other half to yours. In the end, they become a bit indecisive, or giving towards you because they love you. [They can be selfish as well though. Don't think they won't be.]

What they want in a marriage: Something desirable, powerful and deep [and occasionally intense]. They want something that speaks to their soul. They want to feel like they're cared for, and catered to, and deeply loved with every fiber of their being. That's what they want to feel within the marriage. What they want the marriage to look like is along the lines of sweet and simple, yet passionate and dirty with those who look closely enough.

How they act in a marriage: They are very private. They love intimacy, and depth, so they guard this beautiful thing they have with you with all they can. They can thus be possessive (or what they call 'protective') and very loyal. If they truly love you, they love you until time stands still. They don't turn back from the decision (or the feeling rather) of being yours forever.

What to be aware of: With their possessiveness, comes a lot of jealousy and some trust issues. They do want to learn how to trust and let you be however, but they also don't want too many people coming too close to you or acting too friendly (or 'flirty'). As private as they are, if there's anything the world should know, it's not to come near their partner. Also, they can be pretty guarded and it can take them a whiiile before they let their guard down layer by layer, because they don't really trust easily. So if you're not willing to be patient and loving and consistent with them, then just walk away.

What they want in a marriage: Something that's larger than life. A long-term union that feels so fun, vibrant, passionate, cool and open-minded. Sag is an optimistic sign, and a sign that likes to explore, so they want something that makes them feel like they can explore on this - whether it's the romantic connection you have, or you, your mind, your body - they want to look in and feel what's going on. Their optimism also makes them prone to looking at the bright side on things, which is what they'd want from you. If you're more on the negative side or like to complain or look back on things in a sad/bad way, that bores them.

And a marriage where you guys respect each other's place in your lives, as well as respect each other's opinions and ideas and are expressive of them. Also something where you follow through with any visions you guys have.

How they act in a marriage: One thing they know very much how to do and will do is treat you like an equal, but here's the thing - their 'equal' isn't ordinary, it's out of this world, and you guys both share this vision and therefore treat each other equally. They want something extraordinary, beautiful, cool and eye-catching, something along the lines of 'goals'. You guys are just 'thee couple' to your friends. Even in 50 years, people can still say 'wow, they had such a cool marriage'. So they act like 'that person 😎' and want you to act and see yourself like 'that person 😎' as well, and you treat each other that way.

What to be aware of: They can seem pretty detached or aloof. They don't mean to seem that way, cause it could be far from what they're feeling. But they just have this vibe of caring about you through words, but very, very chilled (almost cold even) with their actions. It does not mean that they don't care. I repeat, it does not mean that they don't care. They are simply shy/coy and are willing to let you take the action the most. What they want in a marriage: A long term union where they feel truly cared for, understood, and purely loved. Something that's spiritual and out of this world, that consists of caring for each other until the moment that last breath is taken. Something gentle and generous, and contains all five love languages. They don't want something too strict on how they should think, or act, or feel, or speak, but something free and feels almost imaginary by how good it is, yet it's real.

How they act in a marriage: The thing about the sign Pisces is that they look at the bigger picture and look at it with rose colored glasses, so having Pisces in Juno of marriage, they tend look at the far, far future and the beauty of it, so they don't mind the bad little things of the small picture (the present) and just overlook them because since they love you, they will focus on the bright side. Which can then make them quite forgiving (a bit too much sometimes).

What to be aware of: They are very sensitive. Sometimes unnecessarily, but only because they care a lot. They are also pretty idealistic and imagine a load of stuff, much to not see things with a realistic eye, so they eventually end up seeming self-centered and delusional. Cause they have their own idea, and end up forgetting about the truth and reality. It's both good and bad though, not entirely bad. They basically have a beautiful, creative mind & heart. But the downside is that they're either naïve, or selfish because they don't want to listen to what you have as an idea, even if it may be the truth.

Inviting a deity to join you,

As a follow up to my 20-day deity work challenge! (day 11)

Context

Sometimes when I feel unexpected enjoyment during an activity, I feel the urge to invite a deity to “join me”, so to speak. In my personal practice, I create a distinction between “invoking” and “inviting”. The way I choose to see it is that the former serves as a formal summoning. During a group/individual ritual (during holidays, for example), one/many may invoke a deity by openly calling out to them and reciting a formal request for them to enter the circle. Inviting, on the other hand, is casual and informal. Instead of asking the deity to attend an event, you may simply suggest that they join you, as you believe they would enjoy the activity you are engaging in. For example, if you merely want to share a day to day activity which you like, then a ritualistic invocation is not necessary. A candid invitation would be more indicated. Why so? Because you’re simply and respectfully presenting the deity with whatever the activity is, leaving them the choice to join you or not. Moreover, inviting is a lot easier when you are unprepared for a formal invocation!

How to invite a deity

There are a few ways I favor when it comes to calling a deity to my side. The first would be to simply whisper their name, while envisionning them as clearly as I can. I try to put as much of my intent as I can into that simple name (meaning I attempt to communicate my invitation through it). After this step, I focus all the more actively on the activity I am engaging in, as if I wanted the deity to see through my eyes and to experience it as I do. If they do choose to join me and appreciate what they see, then they will stay by my side for while. Another simple way to invite a deity would be to light a candle for them as you’re practicing the activity, especially if they have a dedicated candle. Same goes: if they have a dedicated song, then play it! If they have a dedicated piece of jewelry, wear it.

Examples of more or less specific activities a deity may want to join in on

Watching fireworks, a sunrise, a sunset, a bonfire

Cooking something they enjoy, like a meal they are associated with

Hiking in the woods/mountains, or by the beach

Gathering herbs, mushrooms, flowers, leaves, etc...

Meditating

Driving through the countryside

Any creative activity! Drawing, painting, sculpting... Especially if they are a deity of the arts, or inspiration.

Listening to music, or attending a concert.

Visiting a museum or gallery (especially when the exhibition is centered around their related culture!)

Watching a movie you think they might enjoy

Doing a general divination reading, like your weekly tarot card pulling

Exploring a new place

Any moment when you’re unexpectedly having fun/experiencing happiness

New Year's Resolutions Written for the Ginnyversary Bingo Challenge with the prompt: #B2 — "It’s time to make New Year’s resolutions!" Read on: AO3 It was 30 minutes to midnight as Harry stood on the rooftop Balcony at 12 Grimmauld Place. He watched the dark horizon, thousands of roofs covered by a thin layer of late December snow, he listened to the faint sounds of partying and music that mixed with the occasional early firework going off, always bathing a few roofs in bright light.

Yet it was still peaceful somehow. Harry had left the busy commotion downstairs for a few breaths of fresh air, with everything going on around Voldemort’s return, the distraction was more than needed. For a single evening, he felt like a normal teenager, leaving the chaos of the wizarding world behind him.

He heard something ruffling behind him, as the rooftop door fell open and a lanky tall redhead stumbled out.

“There you are mate, we were looking for you,” Ron exclaimed, slightly out of breath from the many stairs. “That one here said we shouldn’t let you sulk off by yourself somewhere.” He gestured towards Hermione who was coming up the stairs behind him, equally out of breath, as she gave him a pointed look.

“But to be honest, I agree with her, that’s why we decided to bless you with our divine presence.” Ron joked, earning him a snort from both Harry and Hermione.

But Harry’s lips curled into a small smile, as his two best friends stepped out onto the terrace both plopping themselves down onto the bench he was sitting on.

They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, just taking in the beautiful winter night. Until Hermione’s curious voice finally broke the quietness.

“So, Harry, do you think Sirius has a firework show planned for tonight? He keeps avoiding my questions about the legality of wizarding fireworks in a big city like London.

Ron and Harry only looked at each other, unable to keep their faces from breaking out into a grin as Harry spoke up. “Hermione, it’s New Year’s Eve, and those are the big questions that are plaguing you right now?”

Hermione looked slightly offended as she retorted. “Harry, the effects of pyrotechnics on nature and our surroundings are very important questions.” She pointed out. ”I recently read a study about the amount of stress loud noise and firework explosions cause to the local flora and fauna, it’s highly problematic!”

Harry only raised his hands in surrender, trying to avoid spurring her on further. “You are right, you are right! It is an important topic, still, I’d rather look at the bright side of things tonight.” He let his eyes wander over the far horizon again.

“Well the fireworks will be going off in 20 minutes, so you’ll have a lot of bright things to look at soon anyway!” A very familiar voice exclaimed from behind them.

The three of them all spun around, looking at a grinning Ginny who was just stepping out onto the balcony.

“But I still agree with you Harry, let’s talk about something more fun.” She plopped herself down next to Harry, and her long hair tickled his right hand, making him blush.

“It’s time to make New Year’s resolutions!” Ginny exclaimed- “I hope you thought of something.” -Now looking smug “-Cause my resolution is to pet as many cats as possible!”

Harry laughed while Ron and Hermione only rolled their eyes. “That’s a good resolution I am nabbing that!” “I bet I will manage to pet more than you though!” He dared her, earning him a fiery look from the redhead.

“Are you, Harry James Potter, challenging me, the Queen of Challenges, to a pet off?” She flung herself to her feet, a blazing look crossing her features, only making Harry swallow.

“Well, seems like I am!” He met her confident gaze and couldn’t keep his lips from forming into a smile as he took in her features, her chocolaty brown eyes, framed by those beautiful long lashes, her slightly flushed pink cheeks, and her burning red hair.

“You, my friend… “…are doomed,” Ginny muttered. “There can only be one to pet them all! And that one is me!”

“Pfft, Weasley, you will sink, and it will be me who will stand victorious!” He foretold, now also standing up to face the younger girl. As they stared each other down in fake competitiveness, both struggling not to laugh.

“A tall lanky monster like you will have the cats running in an instant, they just see my good soul and will all flock to my feet,” Ginny stated still feigning greatness.

“Oh so you think that you’re so great-” Harry started before the sound of a closing door drew both his and Ginny’s attention, as they spun around staring at where Ron and Hermione had just disappeared into the house again.

Neither of them said anything for a second until Ginny spoke up.

“Did you notice them leaving?” She turned to face him again, and those brown eyes made his stomach do flips once more as he shook his head.

“Nope, I didn’t. They must’ve sneaked away while we were arguing.” Harry admitted, feeling slightly confused.

“Well anyway, you’re not winning, we all know that Cats prefer fiery young women, not old broody men!” Ginny teased before she stuck out her tongue.

“Old? I am like one year older than you, witch!” Harry retorted making Ginny grin.

“See, exactly! Basically ancient, old man!”

Just as Harry was about to snap some form of funny insult back at her, a loud hissing sound lit up the evening, as all around them firework rockets started to light up the now bright night sky.

The two of them watched in surprise, they must’ve totally forgotten about the time. It was beautiful, colourful, and bright.

Harry almost flinched as just next to their roof a mass of magical fireworks took off. Seems like Sirius did indeed prepare some for midnight he thought.

Ginny had also jumped next to him, and they instinctively clutched each other’s hands. Neither of them thought about it, nor really noticed it, it just felt natural, it just felt normal.

Now hand in hand they stood, on the Grimmauld Place rooftop terrace overlooking London, observing the most wonderful fireworks they had ever witnessed, just each other as company, a perfect New Year’s evening.

20 Questions for Fic Writers

Thanks for tagging me, @crestfallercanyon !

How many works do you have on AO3? 82.

What’s your total A03 word count? 648,300 (quite pleased with that - a lot of words of fic in six years!)

What fandoms do you write for? In terms of what I've published - Mostly Arrowverse, with a little bit of Buffy and the Good Place (and I'm currently dipping my toe into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fandom event). In terms of what I have not published - so many fandoms. Way too much Star Trek and, again, Buffy.

What are your top five fics by kudos? - Can’t Take That Away From Me (Coldflash identity porn). - Better Latte Than Never (the meet-cute prequel to the above Coldflash, and I actually hope to finish that series soon!) - [A fic that I'm embarrassed to have as 3rd highest kudos so eh] - The Bed (The Good Place, Chidi/Eleanor/Tahani). I'm really pleased that's still high on the list, because I think it's for the writing as much as the ship. - Unspeakable (DCTV Coldwave). I think the high kudos is mainly because it's been published so long - I wrote it years ago.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Always. And I say so at the end of every fic. I adore comments, so I feel like I should acknowledge them. Even if my thanks are really boring some days!

What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? So many to choose from! But in terms of angsty endings, probably First Time (Westhallen time travel post-Eddie's death).

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? It might be the Stealing Time/Saving Time series (Coldwestallen, Len with Oculus powers), where Barry, Len and Iris kind of get everything they want, in a way I think makes sense for this version of them.

Do you get hate on your fic? Only once, and I don't know if it even counts as hate, but it was someone who got mad about one of my neurodivergent headcanons - which was more of a surprise than anything, as those usually get great comments. I got so much support from my fandom friends about it that I felt much better. :D

Do you write smut? On occasion, but I try not to. No one needs to read my grey ace ass trying to write sex in a vaguely convincing way (and failing).

Do you write crossovers? Not yet... but let's say I've been working on a Faith Lehane/Leonard Snart fic for ages, that will probably never see the light of day at this point. It's fun though!

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of, but I can't imagine anyone bothering with my fics!

Have you ever had a fic translated? I don't think so, but I've had podfic made <3 The awesome @litrapod turned Fireworks (Coldwave) into a great podfic, which made me so happy.

Have you ever co-written a fic? A few times! Including with @achangeinpriorities. Top tip, beta readers can make great co-writers!

What‘s your all-time favourite ship? That question is too hard and I will never answer it but also it's Coldwave. Or Faith/Buffy. Or... Nope I'm not starting down this road :D

What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I *really* wish I'd been able to finish Take The Keys (And Drive Forever) - Lisa Snart/Caitlin Snow, spooky fic - but I just ran out of ideas for it. Maybe one day...

What’s your writing strengths? Questions about my strengths are a challenge! I've had some nice comments about my writing of character dynamics.

What’s your writing weaknesses? I really struggle with dialogue. You'll see me try out many different ways of writing it, throughout my fic back catalogue, as I attempt to make it work. I think I'm getting better, but slowly!

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? If it was a good fit for a character - like if Hartley Rathaway was being snarky in Latin - I might give it a go, but I wouldn't try it very often. Too easy to get wrong, in too many ways.

First fandom you wrote for? Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I never shared those early fics anywhere. It's for the best!

Favourite fic you’ve ever written? I've written 82 fics this is very difficult! This answer would probably change if you asked me another time, but I think it might still be the Retired Rogues series, in which Coldwave retire and hijinks ensue. Both were early fics, so my style has changed a lot since then, but they stick in my mind as being a lot of fun to write. I'm not sure who's done this already, so sorry if I tag you and you already have... "Now who is the FUCKING PYROMANIAC?!"

Janine was just trying to enjoy her day off comunity college reading her copy of I Capture The Castle, when her attention was taken away by the sound of fireworks in the neighboring area:

SWOOSH!

"I will show them I'm from Brooklyn!"

Janine verbalized as a challenge, as she went to the room of the apartment she shared with five other friends to get her baseball bat.

When she went outside the apartment, there on the street were three man, looking between their late 20s and early 30s and wearing head phones: one was medium height and chubby, with straight black hair and a innocent face, the other was of similar height with straight brown hair and a sardonic face, and the third who was tall, lanky, with curly black hair and large round glasses, showing a more serious facial expression.

He was setting up another small piece of firework (that usually produced a bigger impact and noise than the small size made people think) with his brown haired friend, and counted to give the sign for his chubbier black haired friend to activate the mecanism:

"1, 2, 3... NOW!"

The button was pressed, and SWOOSH, KABOOM!

A firework light took the shape of a hearth in the sky...

When she saw the third man, Janine, who came out raising her baseball bat, slowly putted it down... and smiled!

Why was she angry again?

"Sorry, miss: are we bothering?"

A friendly voice took Janine back from her daydreaming: It was the chubby black haired man wanting to apologize in the name of his friends.

"I was just apreciating the early spetacle..."

"It's just a test, really: we are preparing the New Year's Fireworks for our University's Celebration!"

"Oh! So... wouldn't you all like to take a break and drink some coffee or hot chocolate?"

"Mam... we never refuse food from strangers!"

Was the turn for the sardonic man of brown hair to reply.

"I will just make sure to put the equipment in the car."

The tall and curly haired man told his companions.

"I will help!"

Janine exclaimed, running and without noticing her voice was louder and her baseball bat was left behind.

She joined the group in taking the equipment to safety inside a

Okay frick me I guess I was only gonna do the one tonight and then go to bed but then I got possessed by these sappy little bitches.

Only Jason’s brain could destroy the euphoria of a marriage proposal in just under…

He rolled over to glance at his phone on the nightstand.

Ten hours.

He sighed and rolled back over again, trying to piece together why his brain started spiraling.

Because the evening had been great, despite how things turned out. Dinner at home, a nice walk in the park and then what apparently was supposed to be a personally arranged fireworks display.

Except Donnie screwed up something in the program. And all of the fireworks triggered at the same time.

It was unbelievably bright, and ungodly loud. The roar of the explosions startling anyone who had the misfortune of being out at the same time that night. And how did Donnie even get a permit to do this? Did he get a permit? Didn’t matter now.

It took a moment for the shock to wear off. The minute it did, Donnie started rambling and panicking. Going on and on about how much effort he put into setting all of this up for a proposal and of course it all went wrong.

And all Jason could do was laugh because god, he loved this stupid turtle so much.

He convinced Donnie to drop the question anyway, and then said yes. Part of him wondered if they could have just flown back to the apartment on sheer giddiness, no hover shell required. It took ages to burn the feeling off, and the minute he did he passed out in bed.

And now here he was, feeling like garbage.

He glanced at his boyfriend—his fiancé—who, like usual, still hadn’t woken up just yet. His face was smooshed against the pillow as he lay on his stomach, drooling, also like usual.

Jason wanted to scoot closer but his brain immediately blocked that idea. He wanted to reach out and touch his face but his brain blocked that too.

What do you think you’re doing? It screamed at him. He’s so out of our league. We’re practically nothing compared to him and now that we’re getting married he’s finally going to figure that out.

Jason groaned and rolled onto his back as he pressed his hands against the sides of his head. Shut up, stupid brain. You don’t know that. You’ve been thinking for years that Donnie would eventually kick us out and he still hasn’t. He asked us to marry him last night because he loves us why would that suddenly change now?

No response to that, but the anxiety still swirled in his chest.

Jason suddenly sat up. Shower. He should clean himself off and stand in the steam for a bit and clear his head. That would fix this.

He climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom.

Only to immediately stop when he glanced at the mirror.

Without his glasses he had to lean in close to actually get any details out of his reflection. Nothing out of the ordinary, of course. Same messy hair, same eyes, same nose, same ears—fuck he lost an earring in the bed again didn’t he—and same acne scars along his jaw.

It was all so…

Nothing.

Even if he upgraded from loathing his appearance to feeling indifferent towards it, sometimes it still struck him just how simple it all was.

Why would Donnie want—

Jason didn’t let his brain finish that thought. He did the only thing he could think to do at this point by darting back into the bedroom and practically tackling his boyfri—fiancé.

Jason half curled up on Donnie’s shell as the turtle stirred.

He groaned—never excited about being woken up. “Jase?”

Jason’s fingers curled tighter, one digging into Donnie’s back and the other into his shoulder. He squeezed his eyes shut, hoping that after a few minutes everything would just settle back into place and he could—

Donnie grabbed his arm and suddenly jerked Jason off his back and onto the mattress. Jason couldn’t even protest before Donnie scooted closer, half crushing him as he flopped back down.

“What’s wrong?” Donnie’s eyes were open, but they definitely looked like they’d fall shut again at any second.

Well, even if Jason wanted to run now he couldn’t with his shoulder completely pinned. Countdown until his arm went numb. “Are… are you sure you want to do this?”

It took ages for the turtle to even understand what he was asking. Likely a combination of sleep brain and the vague question.

Then he narrowed his eyes. His arm stretched out as it grabbed Jason’s unused pillow and proceeded to drop it on his face.

“Wh—hey!” Jason shoved it back off. “Donnie—!”

“Jase it is way too early to argue with your shit brain about this.” The softshell mumbled as his eyes closed. “Yes, I’m sure. I wouldn’t have asked if I wasn’t sure. I didn’t plan an entire failed fireworks display on a whim.”

Jason wanted to cross his arms, but couldn’t. “Wouldn’t be the first time you did something crazy on a whim.”

Somehow the turtle still glared with his eyes shut. He pushed himself up, rubbing his face with one hand to snap the rest of the sleep away so he could open his eyes properly.

“What do you mean a ‘whim?’” He leaned over Jase when he poked him in the chest. “Jase, we’ve been dating for almost six years.”

“M-maybe, but—”

“No, there’s no buts.” Donnie shook his head. “Almost everything about our relationship has been me, and obviously you, looking at a situation and choosing each other.”

Jason frowned. “What does that even mean?”

The softshell groaned and wiped his face again. “I broke into your workplace and chose not to fight you. Then I chose to extend an olive branch, because I wanted to stop being enemies. I wanted that. Then I wanted to be friends with you. Then I wanted to actually date you. And since you said yes to all of that I have to assume that’s also what you wanted.”

Jason felt his cheeks starting to burn. “I mean, sure, but come on, Donnie. I—” No, no, he couldn’t say he was practically nothing compared to his fiancé because at this hour that may result in Donnie straight up biting him. “You really want to stay with me for the rest of your life?”

Donnie blinked at him. “We moved in together, didn’t we?”

“Yeah and look where that’s been going.” He scrambled for excuses and why? Why was his brain doing this? “Fighting over hot water. I’m always complaining about how you don’t do the dishes. We’ve started a freaking chart about who owes who dinner whenever we steal each other's food. I stink up the bathroom with the shaving cream I use. I keep stealing your clothes. I get these stupid brain spells and then you have to literally drag me out of bed and check in every three hours to make sure I’m eating something or—”

Donnie suddenly grabbed his face. Every muscle in his body went tense, but he didn’t flinch away from Donnie’s gaze.

“I know.” Donnie spoke quietly. “And I love every second of it.”

“Wh—there’s no way that’s true. You’re just—”

This time his fiancé shut him up with a quick kiss. “Is it still not registering? After everything… I’d still choose you.”

“B-but, isn’t it—”

Donnie laughed, finally looking awake now. “Jase, I grew up with four brothers. You think I’m a stranger to sharing my living space with people who drive me insane from time to time? And you’ve got nothing on them, believe me. I don’t care if I have to listen to you whine about the dishes. I don’t care if we fight over who gets to have the last egg roll. I don’t care if you steal my hoodies no matter how much I complain about it. And I don’t care how many times your shit brain tries to drag you down. I will drag you back up. I don’t care if it’s tedious or annoying or frustrating. I’ll take all of it and then some if it means I get to keep you close.”

Oh.

Finally his brain shut up.

Unfortunately that left him with nothing to say in response, but Donnie didn’t seem to mind that either. He kissed Jase again, then peppered kisses along his jaw and his throat.

“You’re my fiancé.” Donnie hummed against his skin. “We’re gonna get married.”

Jason couldn’t help but chuckle. “Donnie, what?”

“What kind of wedding?” Donnie suddenly looked him in the eye again. “Something big? Simple? In New York? In the Hidden City? Oh there has to be music. We have to have so much music.”

Jason laughed again and tried in vain to shove him back. “Donnie it is way too early to think about this.”

“Oh, so it’s too early to think about wedding plans but not if I was a dumb dumb by proposing to you?”

Jason smirked. “The only dumb dumb thing you did was fuck up an entire firework display.”

Donnie gasped. “You dare mock my display again? I’ll get you back for that. Maybe with a few more kisses.”

Once again, Jason failed to hold back his laughter as his fiancé kissed him from his jaw down to his chest.

“Donnie, Donnie stop.” He tried to shove the turtle off. “None of that. I still have to shower from last night.”

Donnie thankfully got off of him. “Shame, I’m still in celebration mode.”

Jason just shrugged as he climbed off the bed. “Well, I didn’t say you couldn’t take a shower with me.”

Donnie’s eyes went wide and he rushed into the bathroom.

Jason laughed again as he followed after.

I'm taking the 4 hero reveals of varying degrees from Overwatch this weekend as a personal challenge to now showcase all at once every single War Bots character I'm currently seriously considering to be a part of the final roster. For those who missed my earlier posts on the project, the tentative title "War Bots" refers to an original hero/class shooter concept created by myself, starring a wide cast of robots with an arsenal of interchangeable weapons, body parts, and accessories, who fight out over objectives against other teams of bots, or against hordes of mutant plants over the post-human earth they both inhabit.

War Bots, like I said before, has a whole 5 categories of character in its roster: Damage, Control, Tank, Utility, and Support. The current goal is to have 4 characters in each role, so 20 characters total. As of now though, I only have art to show for a little more than half of that. This art is also varying degrees of "rough" and far from any professional standard, so pardon the dust there.

All that said, let's start with the Damage bots:

As you might expect, Damage bots excel in direct combat, and when played well can typically be expected to win a fight on equal ground against other roles. They may be overwhelmed in group encounters, but they can be relied on to get the first pick to get a team fight started.

From left to right, there's the small but fearsome spring-loaded vigilante Wilderoad, the battle-worn tactical commander Calber, and the bombastic young daredevil Poppett.

Wilderoad is a generalist fighter with a solid balance of damage, range, and mobility that's easy to use but hard to master, and can be useful in just about any fight. Their revolver excels at medium-range, and while they tend to be a relatively honest fighter, they have a few tricks up their sleeves thanks to their spring-loaded limbs, allowing for long-range punches and springy steps to quickly evade danger.

Calber is a long-ranged specialist, armed with one out of an arsenal of rifles that can scope down for deadly precision from a distance. As a tactical commander, his abilities also can benefit his team, from area-denying flaming artillery strikes to long-range recon to anticipate incoming enemies. Calber tends to struggle in close-quarters encounters however, due to his low health and his movement options being limited compared to other Damage bots.

Poppett is one of the most mobile characters out of the entire cast, armed with dynamic roller-bladed feet and a weapon that fires close-range explosive rounds to wreak havoc when she gets in on a target. While her weapon's limited range is a defining weakness, her mobility allows her to get in and out with little issue, and her accessory options allow for a variety of team support tools that can function outside of her weapon's effective range, from a gummy explosive that can slow down enemies to a sudsy grenade that can both cleanse certain debuffs from allies and temporarily short-circuit enemy machines.

Together, these three create a gradient of long range, medium range, and close range experts, all of which can customize their loadout choices to further specialize in their niche. Calber for instance can change his standard rifle for an assault rifle that trades range for fire rate, or a sniper rifle that lets him take down enemies from an even longer distance.

Next up is the Control bots:

Control bots specialize in area denial, commanding sections of the map with area-based damage in unique ways. While one weakness or another prevents them from securing kills as easily as Damage bots, they excel at putting pressure on the enemy team nonetheless. Their ability to fight multiple targets at once is also invaluable in the fights against plantoid hordes.

I've got two to share with you today: the reckless pyrotechnics expert Yanno, and the ruthless ecologist-turned-toxicologist Velenna.

Yanno is equipped with a fireworks launcher of his own design, which he uses in combat to dramatic effect, devastating enemies in the colorful blasts of every rocket. He can also have a rocket burst while inside of the launcher's chamber, creating a conical blast that can launch enemies or himself. His special blast-resistant boots also allow him to propel himself into the air with (relative) safety, and his armor makes him more resilient than he looks at first. He can also lob a mortar ball to ward away enemies in an area, or else be subject to a debilitating debuff, such as having their position be revealed through walls or making them temporarily take even more damage from attacks.

Velenna is a much more stern threat, using special chemical compounds designed to eat away at metal as well as organics to torment bots and plants just as efficiently. Her Herbicide Sprayer shoots a plume of toxic gas that rapidly damages enemies in its range, and builds up a lingering Toxin debuff that eats away at their health even after they leave the spray itself. Velenna can expedite the process with her sprayer's alternate fire, Reactant Grenade, which fires a small projectile that makes the enemy take their buildup of toxin damage all at once if it hits. Velenna can extend the area she controls with her Auto-Fumigator, a stationary device that makes a constant spray of toxic gas in an area until destroyed. The exact properties of her toxins can be adjusted to allow for a variety of ways to make her victims suffer, which can be mixed and matched with her other abilities for all manner of experimentation.

While these are the only Control characters I have ready to show today (another one needs some work on his kit and the other doesn't have the art extend to his feet so he'd look dumb in this format), know that AoE attacks aren't the only things that make a Control character function, but it is the commonality between these two eclectic "visionaries".

Moving further down the spectrum of raw damage to team support, next is the Tanks:

Tanks are the biggest and highest-health bots of the entire cast, both traits they use in addition with their abilities to be the stalwart defenders of their team, holding the line against enemy advances and putting pressure on the frontline in turn.

Again, I only have two ready to show today: the boisterous minigun-wielding captain Navea, and the slow-going expert on construction and destruction, Formann.

Navea boasts high health and even higher damage output, the latter thanks to her handheld Artillery Minigun. While it takes time to rev up, and limits her mobility while revved and firing, it boasts some of the highest damage output in the cast at close range, and its hitscan rapid-fire nature lets her at least pressure enemies at farther ranges as well. This damage output goes into charging up her Booster Beacon, which provides one of several buffs to Navea and any nearby teammates, allowing for big offensive pushes or big defensive saves. In its downtime, she can also use her Arm Guards to block incoming damage, or use them as a melee weapon to knock some sense into the enemy personally.

Formann has the highest health of the cast, and while his slow, easygoing nature can be presumed based on the animal he resembles, he can be a force to be reckoned with if taken lightly. His weapon, the cement cannon, can output bursts of damage with either shotgun-like blasts or arcing globs of liquid cement, which with decent accuracy can slow down an enemy, letting Formann catch up and be in his ideal range for a further followup. When outside of that range, he can instead deploy a Barricade Frame, a stationary wire-frame wall that can act as temporary cover. He can even activate the small wheels on the side of the frame to let the frame move forward, letting his team advance behind it safely. He can even apply his own cement to it to increase the damage it can take, though at the cost of removing the ability for allies to shoot through it. On the other hand (pun intended) is his Wrecker Arm, a steel ball on a chain that he can sling out to send enemies flying backwards, or deal massive damage to enemy buildings.

Tanks are certainly a tricky archetype to get right, so my plans for additional tanks have been heavily in flux for a while now. I want characters that not only don't feel like carbon copies of existing characters in other games, but also don't step on the toes of any other character in this cast, too.

Next up is a unique role, the Utility bots:

Utility is the wildcard role, with the overarching goal to help their team in a number of unique ways without being the best at raw damage, area denial, damage denial, or healing, though all of these things are available from one Utility bot or another. This broad expertise is also exemplified with their loadout options changing their playstyles and capabilities more drastically than most other bots, possibly completely changing their role on the team with a simple change in weapon or accessory choice.

Once again, I only have two to share today: the whimsical master of powers unknown, Sorsier, and the wily master of cold-hard engineering, Xenir.

Sorsier utilizes a mysterious power to unleash a variety of potent abilities, with the most versatile set of options in the entire cast. Sorsier's default staff can fire a modest stream of projectiles effective in medium range, or lob the orb at its top and aim it after it's been fired to strike for a burst of damage. However, alternate staffs allow for scorching explosive attacks, devastating defense-reducing debuffs, or even full-on team healing capabilities. Sorsier's scarf lets them charge up an area-of-effect spell, such as a field of energy that restores ammo and recharges allies' abilities, or a pillar of earth that emerges from the ground to act as temporary cover or high ground. They even carry one of several types of potion, those offering their own manner of effects as well. Sorsier is versatile, but they are also frail, and lack any true movement options to get them out of a dire situation, so they require either careful positioning or additional team support to stay safe.

Xenir is the smallest bot in the cast, but makes up for their small stature by bringing in the backup with multiple types of deployable and upgradable buildings to bolster the entire team. Xenir alone is an unimpressive fighter, with only a modest pressurized Nail Gun for self defense, and the ability to dig underground to temporarily move faster and evade harm using their drill arms (guys I SWEAR I had this idea WAY before this weekend trust me). However, Xenir shines with their buildings, which they can build and upgrade using collected ammo packs as salvaged material. They can deploy a Sentry Cannon as an automatic mid-range source of damage, as well as a pair of Transport Tunnels to let allies get back to the fight in record time. These buildings can be individually exchanged for alternative options, like trading your automatic sentry for a manually controlled Tinkerer's Tank that Xenir can hop in and pilot, or trading the Transport Tunnels for a pair of Restock Depots that let you place your own health and ammo kits. Xenir takes care in both managing your resources and picking your fights, but can let his team be an unstoppable force if played well.

The breadth of the Utility category is only displayed so well with half of its intended lineup ready to show, but this role is perhaps my favorite in terms of the exciting possibilities it provides.

Last but very much not least, the Support bots:

Support bots are the experts in aiding teammates, with strong, reliable healing output being standard across the role, along with strong utility to save allies from dire situations or give them a more aggressive advantage in a fight.

The final three bots for today are an elementally-inclined trio, with the hot-tempered speedy mechanic Burnett, the electromagnetic gentle combat medic Ezela, and the reborn cyborg arbalist Arber.

Burnett's estimated repair time is as short as her temper for nonsense, with a drive to work fast and move fast. Her Repair Welder can scorch an unwary enemy, but it excels at repairing allies much faster, with one of the highest healing outputs in the cast balanced by limited range and uptime. She can also fire a glob of ignited fuel from a distance for an alternate attack she calls the "Hot Shot". If she's out of welder fuel, then she can fix dented allies in a pinch with a good ol' Wrench Swing. Her fuel isn't just good for powering her welder, as it also lets her use her Booster Gear, which lets her charge up and release a burst of forwards speed, letting her navigate the battlefield with even greater haste than her normal above-average movement speed. She can also put spare Scrap she collects from healing enemies to use by repurposing it into Bolster Packs, throwable collectibles that give allies temporary bonus health. She can also trade out the Bolster packs for alternate team-support throwables to make with Scrap.

Ezela is a more conventional style of healer, with very low direct damage output but constant, reliable healing output. Ezela constantly emits a Recharge Field that slowly heals all nearby allies, but this can be channeled through the electrical node on her right hand, the Focus Coil, to make a targeted beam of electricity that heals allies at a faster rate. Her other arm's Coil Beam fires a beam at a different frequency, letting her damage enemies. The damage is slow and limited in range, but can bypass certain defensive abilities and is easy to aim. By healing allies, Ezela can also charge up an Electron Shield, which provides a temporary spherical shield that can protect either Ezela herself or an ally, depending on whether or not she has a Focus Coil target. Ezela can also evade harm using Surge Dash, a technique that focuses the electromagnetic energy keeping her afloat to quickly lunge into any direction. Overall, Ezela is for the most unselfish of teammates, while also requiring above-average positional and situational awareness to make the most of her talents.

Finally for today is Arber, a one-of-a-kind hybrid of plant and machine that was a result of a miraculous fluke in survival. Arber uses a humble crossbow to fire unique techno-organic bolts that repair allies and damage enemies. Each shot boasts solid range before arcing, and does a solid amount of either damage or healing. However, by pulling back the crossbow a second stage, its power is increased, flying faster, farther, and with more power to its effect. Arber can also utilize his unique symbiotic nature to unleash a Vine Shot, firing a cable-like vine that can ensnare enemies it hits, slowing their movements and restricting movement-based abilities. He also has access to a a seed which he can throw to plant a Mending Bud, a friendly plant creature that emits healing spores, gradually healing allies in its range. Arber is a high-impact healer, but he has notably more downtime and less mobility than other options. While alternate kit options let him address these weaknesses, it comes at the cost of one of his existing strengths in range, burst output, or utility.

WHEW! Let's give one last round of applause to all 12 of the bots who came out here tonight!

A motley crew indeed, these bots all have to work together to protect their rebuilt world from falling into ruin once again. And while this is the bulk of the cast (at least based on what I have in mind), rest assured that there's more to meet in the future.

Thanks a ton to anyone who's read this far down to the end. I'm really excited about this project, and even if it doesn't amount to anything, I at least want it to be a cool idea I get to share. 2023 in review: fic writer asks

19. Share your favorite opening line

Going through my fics looking for the best opening line made me realise my opening lines are rather bland lmao. Something to work on in the new year ig! My favourite one is probably one of these two:

"At Harimaya Bridge in Kōchi, Tosa, two figures stand drenched in red." (Red Tide)

"Fire bursts across the sky like the flames that burned his memories away, and even the distant cheers of his siblings cannot ease the chill that grips his heart." (What Begins)

Both are from Touken Ranbu fics. The first one references both a Toumyu song and the Yosakoi Naruko Dance's 「土佐のー高知のはりまや橋で」 lyric. It also parallels the opening line of its companion fic, as it is the same scene but a different character's perspective.

The second line I just like for the imagery lmao. The character, Honebami Toushirou, is watching fireworks at what should be a joyous festival but since he lost his memories after being burnt in a fire, well...he doesn't do well with fire-anything.

20. Share your favorite ending line

Despite my trouble with ending off fics I think my ending line selection was stronger than the opening lines. I had a couple choices here and found it harder to narrow down so I am going to cheat and put two again...

"His mind is blissfully, terrifyingly silent." (Ab Initio)

"Falcon laughs, sun-sharp challenge and the bright spark of mischief, pressing close as the smell of sandalwood and eucalyptus envelops them once more." (Slow March)

The first one is for how short and snappy it is. It gets the point across succinctly, that Blood Falcon is 1) for now free of Black Shadow's mental voice influencing his thoughts, 2) relieved at this, 3) really fucking weirded out and even unmoored by this because his whole life he's known nothing else.

The second one is again for the imagery. It's not nearly as succinct but I do like how Rob as the POV chara is characterising everything about Falcon as this brilliant, shining presence that he can't help but be drawn to. There is also of course the ~symbolism~ of the smell of Rob's bath products surrounding them both. At this point in the series neither of them will admit their true feelings for each other, but the fact that they smell the same now from sharing the bath products, allowing each other to mark and be marked...it's just another way they've insidiously crept their way into each others' lives despite not talking about any gross scary feelings ever (idiots).

21. Share your favorite piece of dialogue

There were a lot of moments from Thousand Five I wanted to put in here LMAO. I really like the dialogue in the first three chapters in particular, that's where I feel it was the snappiest (possibly because they were doing nothing but talking in the bar there so it had to be snappy). But my favourite bit of dialogue in the fic atm is this one:

“You would forfeit the chance to properly best your rival?” Stewart lifts his chin. “You’d kill the surgeon who’s the reason you’re even alive to begin with?” (chapter 6)

I'm very fond of this scene. It's the first time Stewart quite literally puts his neck on the line for Falcon. He doesn't have the combat skill or brute force to get out of this by fighting, so he uses what he does have at his disposal: his knowledge of the other person's background and personality, as well as drawing on what relation they share and any debts that might be owed. It's a gamble, but it's all he's got. The bold way it's stated, like he already knows the conclusion, is both calculated and just his natural adrenaline kicking in. Stewart is not one to bow in the face of danger and is in fact unfortunately drawn to it, but in this case he was afraid for someone else's life (Falcon) and was perhaps not quite as blasé as he'd normally be.

Because I am indecisive here is another fave bit of dialogue...this time from Creatures With Wings:

“Do you regret it?” Ryu asks suddenly, sliding a hand behind his head. “Taking on your role as Captain Falcon, or bringing me into this. Is that why you asked?” The back of his neck prickles, helmet still trapped under Ryu’s arm. But Captain Falcon is as much an ideal as he’s a man in a costume, and when he speaks, his voice is strong. “Creatures with wings are born to take to the skies someday. To fear falling is natural. But sometimes, all you can do is take that leap and fly.”

Besides being a title drop, Andy's dialogue here is a modified version of what he says to Ryu in Lap 50 of the anime. It still serves as reassurance and motivation to Ryu, but it also contains a veiled message about his feelings on his own situation. Andy isn't one to outwardly display struggles or regrets, or to ask for help because he's supposed to be the one helping. But I like to think about a more vulnerable side to him. He's only human, even if Captain Falcon needs to be so much more than that.

So here, he's also expressing that Ryu is quite possibly the only person who could fully understand him, as someone who was destined to be a saviour in this universal battle. Maybe he, just like Ryu, had (still has) fears and insecurities and regrets. And maybe despite that, he still did it anyway because there was no other choice. But Andy...doesn't actually directly answer the questions Ryu asked. He can't. Falcon can never be anything less than a paragon. To express weakness, to waver now at the end of all things...that's not who he is. But at the end of all things...maybe he can be Andy one last time. Andy trusts Ryu enough to reveal here just the tiniest hint of weakness, reciprocating the trust Ryu has constantly shown confiding in him.

26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?

Hmm every time I get a comment is very satisfying (especially the ones that go into detail) and crunching the numbers about how much I wrote this year compared to previous years was also fulfilling-feeling. I have a checklist of character's I've written/have yet to write in this series and it felt good to tick off a bunch and try writing so many different themes and perspectives this year. Thousand Five is perhaps the predictable answer to this question, as it is still my baby my beloved my first gameverse and longest fic. I'm happy to have published 12 chapters of it this year!

But I think the most satisfying moment was getting this comment on Rush:

This awoke something in me. Never played or watched F-Zero anything in all my life and yet these two give me life.

How gratifying is it to know that you've managed to captivate someone who doesn't know anything about the fandom with the power of your writing alone? How wonderful is it to know that you've managed to capture someone's interest based on the choice, order, artistry of the scenes your words have woven? Without any pre-existing interest in the characters and franchise doing some of the work of grabbing the reader for you? I really, truly would love to know if this anon looked more into the series after or went on to read other F-Zero fics. Getting people into the series and ship I like because of something I created is living the dream, I tell you. And it all happened because I wrote about Falcon and Stewart [redacted] in a rivals with benefits situationship LMAO.
