The Hardest Tag Game I've Played So Far....

Rules: you just got a kind of shitty old car and it doesn't have bluetooth. you can only buy 7 CDs and you can't repeat an artist. what are you getting?

I immediately run out to my car to grab my binder of CDs. There are multiple other binders of CDs in the house, but the car ones are the most likely ones we're keeping.

As I grab it I lovingly pat my car. "Smurf, don't listen to them. You aren't shitty. We've shared 200K miles (>320K km) together and you are WAY better than the grey grump with over 400K miles that sits next to you. I don't care that your radio doesn't work, your AC is iffy and I can't actually tell which track you are on because the display is wonky. You still play CDs and you reliably get me from Point A to Point B. That's all that matters."

Now on to the hard part. Narrowing down to 7 CDs. Music is part of my DNA, and I know my choices are always going to be very mood dependent.

Realistically, I would've burned mixes. But I'm assuming that's not an option. Boo. I play K-pop a huge percentage of the time these days, but....most of those CDs are VERY short and it's very easy to overplay them. This means I'll have to eliminate most of my K-pop collection.

So after about a week of agonizing and feeling like I was betraying my favorite artists, here's what we got:

Mystique by Forestella

Their harmonies mesmerize me, and they make such smart use of the differences in their voices. This album doesn't have most of my favorite songs from them, but it's my favorite of their full length albums. I play this particular song way too often recently (the section from 2:38 - 3:22 sends shivers down my spine). Fun fact - Hyungho was a chemical engineer prior to competing to join this group. The biochemistry major in me delights in that fact.

2. Greatest Hits by Queen

It's not this exact compilation, but it's close enough. This is a very very dangerous album though while driving. Best on cruise control if you don't want a speeding ticket.

I'm not cheating with #3 and #4. I can't make my own mixes so I'm choosing two with very different vibes. Seriously, I need variety. There's a reason I gravitate towards Kpop a lot. It's so diverse in terms of soundscapes. Anyways, I own these CDs, and we're not repeating artists. Win-Win. Lol.

5. Happenstance by Rachel Yamagata

I just love her voice. I listen to the One Spring Night OST at home because I really love those particular songs, but this is my pick for physical albums.

6. Fallen by Evanescence

The amount of time I debated over what my "when I'm angry" CD was going to be for this list....it was a lot. But in the end, I chose this one. Immediate nostalgia which is bound to help defuse the bomb.

7. In Life by Stray Kids

Like @iguessitsjustme, this pick felt cruel. I'm already having to eliminate most of my favorite Kpop CDs because they are just too short if we're going to have to play on repeat. Which leaves me with a few full length or compilation albums - all but 3 of which were Stray Kids. Skz 2020 felt like the obvious choice since it has 27 songs, but I decided it might be cheating. It's two discs. In the end....I narrowed it to three and did a coin flip tournament. Lol.

Hi internet- I'm a trans woman in Florida and I need help. I'm posting this across all my socials because I can't suffer in silence anymore.

I'm not a prisoner or a child, but i was still forcibly detransitioned by the State of Florida between 2022 and 2024. Planned Parenthood forced me off hormones in an act of anticipatory obediance to the trans healthcare ban that was eventually signed into law. I had been on HRT for ~5 years. I had fully socially transition and was passing- living my best life as a woman.

There was no place to go after Planned Parenthood dropped me. I spent over 2.5 years being forcibly detransitioned and I had no way to help myself. I lost my job. I lost my looks. I lost my VOICE. I'm looking for the words to describe the psychological and physical torture of having your body, identity and soul chemically excised from you but I don't think anyone but the trans community will ever really understand.

I'll try though: Imagine having to walk through liquid curtains of hydrochloric acid every day. And every day the acid gets more and more concentrated- but not only does the acid burn your skin and melt your face, it also seeps into your chakras and severs the links between your mind, body, and soul. Eventually leaving you an empty, disfigured husk- A revolting parody of the person you used to be.

In February 2024 I finally got in contact with a local lgbt charity hoping to get back on HRT but they weren't helpful. Mostly they just wanted to shame me for being unemployed. I want to say this plainly: Liberal institutions will not protect you from the law when they ban HRT. They wouldn't even give me the name of a clinic until a judge issued a stay of the healthcare ban. The ban was lifted for about 6 weeks and I was lucky enough to make the window, get a PCP, and get back on HRT.

To their credit, they did eventually get me in therapy and very quickly hit me with a suprise (well, not much of a surprise) autism diagnosis. I won't be naming them right now because I'm still a client, and that therapist is my only connection to the outside world right now.

There's so much more to this that I don't know how to narrativize yet. I was so poor in 2023 that I survived on less than 35¢ of food a day. I ate almost exclusively rolled oats and bagged sugar, averaging about 350 calories a day. I think I was well on my way to starving to death. By December I'd lost basically all my body fat, much of my of muscle mass and my bones were sticking out weird.

So, even though my situation is more stable, I'm still in a very precarious position. HRT is TIGHTLY controlled here. The max estrogen level you're allowed in Florida is a quarter of what I was on in Colorado, and that's just not enough to survive on.

I've managed to cheat my labs a little, so for now I've got my full dose. But once my current RX is up I'll be at risk of getting my HRT yanked because my estrogen levels are "too high". And I can't survive on a quarter dose. And I can't survive a 2nd round of detransition

Forced detransition has broken me at a fundamental level, and I don't know if I'll ever get the person I was before back. I just know I can't move forward until I get this story out.

If there's anyone out there who actually cares, please fucking help me. I live in Broward County and my partner and I have tentative plans to move to either Portland OR or Denver CO. I'm too damaged to work, and my partner's income is just enough to keep us treading water. and it's a combination of knowing you probably didn't work as hard as them - because of course, these people are fuckinggg intelligent, and deserve all their success - and also that you're just not as good as you think you are.

Sci-Fi Rounded/Curved Armor References

we know we usually post transformers writing stuff but as we navigate digital art, and for descriptions as a writer, we found ourselves seeking armor references for hard scifi future armor that is more rounded and curvy, and moreover not designed around human androcentric stereotype body norms. A lot of the entries in this photo may seem odd but that's because visually hard scifi set further in the future tends to assume that armor will be blocky and flat, half copying the modern military standards (even though rounded armor is a thing that heavier infantry armor right now tends to have), so we had to turn to settings that are not as realistic and whose in lore capabilities (such as energy shielding) are not either.

Fiction aside said norms are an actual problem soldiers of various militaries have complained about and that has also meant that gals whether cis or transfemmes who want to say, find a suit of recreated medieval plate armor often end up using armor accounting for modern engineering principles to actually account for comfort in the chest and having a variety of different curvatures (which of course men also have which is why we said androcentric stereotypes) apart from the fact that usually that's custom fit rather than standardized as modern military armor tends to be. Something we want to note off the bat is that some of the flaws in the armors presented above is the general lack of armor for the groin for lighter armor variants and favoring shin armor instead first, even though getting hit in the groin is painful for nearly everybody, and even if you've had a nullification surgery having your ability to go to the bathroom be impeded by injury is extremely inconvenient to say the least

So- we dug around from stuff we remembered for a variety of art references from official and/or in-game art from comics, videogames and shows that works on those principles while usually at least somewhat reflecting the current trajectory of offensive-defensive technology development, or in other words what armor in the future could look like assuming some radically new physics/chemical processes or changes in weaponry don't cause shifts. Some of the examples here are basically medieval armor redone as a spacesuit but that is a cool look. E.G. the Huntress of in-game RoR2 and RoR Returns art is actually not underarmored from a medieval perspective, a lot of professional infantry such as halberdiers and pikemen did not use leg armor much or at all in order to have higher mobility, and that is something that some tactical / special ops units today with skin tight clothing underneath somewhat reflect. for an archer, her space cuirass with arm bracers and ?leather/scifi material equivalent? banded tassets (the sideskirt armor over the cloth side skirts, tassets can also be at the front of the thigh) would actually be quite good for medieval times for the kind of combat she does.

Risk of Rain is not the only science fantasy influence we looked to, specific armors from Star Wars, Metroid, Halo, Mass Effect, XCOM 2, Half Life, (listed in order approaching realism) and Transformers (the odd one out as an inherently iterative franchise that can range from high fantasy isekai to superhero fantasy to to science fantasy to social scifi to hard scifi, Verity's armor is decidedly from a continuity that is 3 out of 5 of those genres) were also considered, along with the more hard scifi Expanse, Mars Tactics, and Selaco. The funny thing about armor design in scifi is that artists who want to make realistic considerations appear across all the different subgenres because that is something that helps with the scifi feel. We did our best to find stuff that uses convex armor principles, ie, curves outward and thus helps deflect or lesson blows away from say, one's heart or lungs. Rather than concave, which curves inward, which is why boobplate that goes past the extent of being realistically useful to the point of carving out breast shapes, which historically have only been used for ceremonial purposes or by people not expected to be in the fighting, such as commanders who hung back rather than leading from the front, because the problem with such armor is that a blow over either breast can more easily slip into into the middle and chip away or pierce into a vital area.

This is true whether for pecs or tits it doesn't matter it's a bad idea. There is, from a point of view of ritual or fashion, nothing wrong with segmented boobplate, but for combat armor it is a terrible idea, unlike concave boobplate (which frankly is what a variety of historical armor designed for men look like which is yet another point for the appearance of the body is shaped by clothing showing how much of gender is a construct tally), cavalry heels (and as far as street brawls go as compared to muddy warfare if you're good at balance in high heels those things deliver quite the sharp kick, but there's a reason soldiers don't usually go past 1-inch in terms of heeled boots), battle skirts (again, tassets, such as the heavier scale mail ones used by ancient scythian men and women, and then you have stuff like hoplite battle skirts where the leather flaps would usually have an actual cloth skirt underneath, and then you have the lengthier scythian, assyrian, celtic, and persian skirts that with the scythians could be out of leather, banded, or scale mail. these are among many other societies who have a history of combat with skirted clothing), and so on.

We went for a mix of light, medium, and heavy armor on purpose, because different amounts are preferred based on needs regarding mobility and stealth, amount of combat where enemies landing a blow is expected and what kind of weapons are being used (and thus how to approach deescalation if possible), amount of other equipment being carried or that may need to be carried or carrying injured personnel, and availability.

Note- this is not a criticism of preparing for combat *without* armor that isn't just a kevlar weave or flame resistant material or something or less than that- some situations call for forgoing armor usage either because of needing to be able to move as fast as possible or get through very tight places, or because the setting is one where armor is a bad idea. For a different example, when you look at flight suits for pilots of aircraft and spacecraft, they often don't have much armor (of course, astronauts irl are not supposed to have to worry about combat in space and we hope things stay that way even though things around satellites are getting a bit heated), and even during World War II the downside of wearing flak vests on a big plane is it slows you down and if you need to get somewhere fast say to do repairs or grab a parachute or apply first aid, and technology later changed to make them much lighter.

For a different comparison, an almost absurd Catch-22 one, from scifi, in Battletech, mech pilots ideally use cooling suits to reduce chances of heat fatigue. But when that technology was lost to most societies after several rounds of galactic nuclear wars and key industrial assassinations, most pilots typically were practically down to their underwear. Given all this, it does make sense in a way that Samus's layers under her armor is basically a jumpsuit because of the amount of heat her armor could produce (with that said, we do want to eventually try drawing her with some light armor and flight suit stylization on top of that). -with a similar color scheme and less obtrusive shoulder armor is the Martian Marine power suit armor worn by Bobbie Draper as depicted by the amazing actor Frankie Adams in the show The Expanse (we are not in any way ready or looking to discuss the plot of the show at the moment we just wanted to bring up the armor. only so many spoons). Her armor also features a forearm sized integrated minigun

-the five armors from the Halo series present are: ODST battle dress uniform,Gen 2 MJOLNIR/V - EVA, Halo 5 MJOLNIR/R - Recon, MJOLNIR/K - Commando, and MJOLNIR/B - B-class

-we chose a photo of the Laborers from Mars Tactics specifically because they are very much on the light side of armor, only having space cloth/polymer, an astronaut helmet, greaved boots, and a remote unit/life support pack that is basically a chest cuirass ie the most bra-like realistic boobplate can get

-the armor chosen from XCOM 2 is the W.A.R. suit, which in what seems to be a running theme has a heavy forearm blaster weapon mounted on.

-from the Risk of Rain series, the default armors of the Risk of Rain 2 Commando, Loader, and Huntress are shown, along with Risk of Rains Returns art of the Huntress and Mercenary.

-the cover art of Half-Life Decay depicting player character scientists Colette Green and Gina Cross wearing the signature HEV suit (Hazardous Environment Suit) typical of Black Mesa scientists prepared for dealing with said environments, including forays to the border dimension world of Xen, and famously worn by Half Life protagonist Gordon Freeman. while not quite what hazardous material suits or bomb suit armor looks like currently irl the design is undeniably slick and didn't break any of the rules we posed for our search except the avoiding concave armor in that the mid-riff area has a remote unit indent. ah well, given that the suit is literally something you power up to reduce damage to your person, it has (within the lore) first aid capacities to administer morphine when wounded, this suit doesn't play by normal modern armor rules.

-two versions of Samus Aran's armor from the Metroid series are shown, one is her partially organic technology power suit as it appears in Metroid Dread and the other is her gravity suit as it appears in the Metroid Prime trilogy. The power suit is definitely on the lighter side, while the gravity suit is easily some of the heaviest armor shown here. the size of her pauldrons on the gravity suit is of course absurd and irl her armor would be difficult to move around in unless it's an exosuit with it's own locomotion

-lastly, Star Wars The Old Republic's Shae Vizla's armor as leader of the Mandalorian people, Mandalore the Avenger. she's sometimes shown with closer to breast tight boobplate but thats not the case for this art here

Also just want to say it's very funny to us how armor plate carriers (which are commonly used currently) are not as prevalent in scifi the further in the future of a timeline one goes

A modern or post-apocalyptic elite soldier specialized in chemical warfare.

This is conceptually a half-orc ranger, but I only gave it 4 class levels in ranger, and the rest of its abilities are unique, coming mostly from its equipment. Its other 10 hit dice are racial hit dice.

The equipment, while usable by players, isn't nearly as good for them as it is for the enemy, mostly due to the limited number of charges that only this creature can refill.

EQUIPMENT ABILITIES

Armored Hazmat Suit An elite biotrooper wears an +2 armored hazmat suit which counts as +2 hide armor, but a biotrooper gains an extra +4 armor bonus to AC while wearing it. Additionally, any creature wearing this armored hazmat suit gains immunity to inhaled poisons and noxious gaseous effects (such as stinking cloud), and a +4 circumstance bonus on saving throws against all other poisons.

Biotrooper Gun An elite biotrooper carries a biotrooper gun which can be used for three forms of attack - a rifle butt melee attack, an infectious needle gun ranged attack, and a toxic gas cone attack. It can make any of the three forms of attack at any time. A biotrooper gun is considered an exotic weapon, which the biotrooper is proficient with.

A biotrooper gun is capable of holding 20 rounds of infectious needle gun ammunition and 5 rounds of toxic gas ammunition. A biotrooper can refill this ammunition once per day, usually first thing in the morning, by spending 1 hour crafting alchemical ammunition to insert in the weapon. The ammunition becomes inert and ruined if not immediately loaded into the gun, so storing up more ammunition than the gun can hold at a time is impossible.

For the purposes of enhancement bonuses, weapon focus, and other weapon-specific bonuses, a biotrooper gun is treated as a single weapon, with such bonuses applying to both melee and ranged attacks with it.

Infectious Needle Gun When used as an infectious needle gun as a ranged weapon, a biotrooper gun deals 1d3 piercing damage with a x3 critical multiplier, and has an 80 ft. range increment. It counts as a firearm, but cannot use ammunition designed for other firearms.

A creature that takes damage from an infectious needle gun is subject to the following disease:

Disease (Ex) Infectious Needle Gun—injury; save Fort DC 17; onset immediate; frequency 1/hour; effect 1d4 Con damage and 1 Cha damage and target is fatigued and skin turns green; cure 2 consecutive saves.

Rifle Butt When used as a rifle butt as a melee weapon, a biotrooper gun functions as a greatclub.

Toxic Gas As a standard action, an elite biotrooper gun can launch a 60-foot cone of poison gas. Targets within the area take 4d6 acid damage, and must make a DC 23 Fort save or be poisoned.  The save DC is Constitution-based, is based on the elite biotrooper's hit dice, and includes a +2 bonus.  The gas lingers for 1 round, remaining visible while it does so and affecting creatures that enter it (though no creature can suffer from a given Toxic Gas attack more than once).

A creature other than a biotrooper that uses a biotrooper gun's toxic gas attack has a 5% chance of exposing himself to the poison each time he fires it, unless he has the poison use class feature.

Poison (Ex) Toxic Gas—inhaled; save Fort DC 23; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1d6 Con damage; cure 3 consecutive saves.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Favored Community (Ex) An elite biotrooper has formed a bond with a specific community. While inside the limits of this community, it gains a +2 bonus on initiative checks and Knowledge (local), Perception, Stealth, and Survival skill checks. An elite biotrooper traveling through its favored community leaves no trail and cannot be tracked (although it may leave a trail if it so desires).

Favored Enemy (Ex) An elite biotrooper gains a +2 bonus on attack and damage rolls against one type of enemy chosen from the ranger's favored enemy list, as well as a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against creatures of the selected type. The example elite biotrooper's favored enemy is vermin.

Hunter's Bond (Ex) An elite biotrooper's bond with his allies allows him to spend a move action to grant half his favored enemy bonus against a single target of the appropriate type to all allies within 30 feet who can see or hear him.

Trapfinding (Ex) An elite biotrooper adds 1/2 its ranger level (typically +2) to Perception skill checks made to locate traps and to Disable Device skill checks. It can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps. These bonuses are already included in the statistics above.

Orc Ferocity (Ex) Once per day, when a half-orc is brought below 0 hit points but not killed, it can fight on for 1 more round as if disabled. At the end of its next turn, unless brought to above 0 hit points, it immediately falls unconscious and begins dying.

Poison Use (Ex) An elite biotrooper is trained in the use of poisons and does not risk poisoning itself when applying poison to a weapon.

tlc winter thoughts chapters 56-86

okay i didn't read 30 chapters in one day because i actually have a lot to study. and making these posts takes time. but also i took a break for like 2 days from reading because i couldn't stand the alpha stuff. here we go. like i've mentioned before, the closer i get to the climax, the less commentary i make

Alright, first, I’ll do Tera, my Half Life OC. The quick background on her is that she is a biochemical engineer who was testing the Biology Department’s HEV suit when the Resonance Cascade happened, and thus survived by pure accident. Being Australian however, she was able to hold her own against the space Australians. You don’t run into her during the game because the Military slit her throat thinking she was Freeman, but she survived! Barely! With the help of GMan and some science (and morphine from the suit). Anyways, onto the ask game

Blood- what would she do if she saw a stranger’s corpse: originally, pre rescas, depending on the place, she would’ve panicked. Whose body is this, what killed them, am I in danger as well? That kinda stuff. Unless it was like a funeral she accidentally got invited to (she would go to see if she knew anyone there and if she didn’t she would apologies) post ResCas, probably after stasis, legit that would’ve been just par for the course. Unless it had a Headcrab on it. Then she would stab the Headcrab (she hates those things)

Garnet- if they had to kill someone, what method would they choose: the most quick and painless way possible. Not a stranger to mercy kills after the rescas, she has found that shooting someone in the soft part right between the skull and the neck on the back of the head is the least painful and most sure fire way to kill someone, aiming up thru the skull ofc. If she didn’t have a gun on her tho she would snap their neck.

Scarlett- how does she grieve: She used to get real quiet, cuts herself off from people, silently reflect on times she had with the person. However, after the rescas, most all of her friends had already died, and she was in Europe now instead of America or Australia, so she just assumed that her family was dead, so she forced herself to channel the pain and grief into rage, helping her get through her rather extraneous circumstances. She really just needs a hug and a good cry smh

Wine- How does she act when she’s drunk: She’s a happy drunk, but is also a heavyweight. Think of it like Brooklyn 9-9’s “# drink Amy” system. She gets real fun (a little loud) for the first 5 drinks. After 5 shit hits the fan, but she knows her limits. (She gets really competitive at drink 7 is the problem)

Lipstick- What is her love language: she is probably physical affection and quality time. Poor girl didn’t have the time to spend with people to fell fulfilled in a relationship before the rescas, and probably never will again.

Poppy- Does she believe in a god: After meeting up with Gordon after the rescas, he told her about the Nihalinth, and so she believes in some sort of higher being, but not probably the Christian god. She is a woman of science after all.

Time for Jaws! You all know Jaws (hopefully) but if you don’t, they are this crime gremlin I made for Payday. Common traits among all Jaws are: extensive scarring, multiple mental disorders, propensity for explosives. But the main point is just they’re a crime gremlin

Blood- what would they do if they saw a stranger’s corpse: they probably put it there. If it’s a civilian, they’d probably swear a lot because that’s coming out of my paycheck but otherwise they would just leave it there, bc they don’t want their finger prints on the scene

Garnet- if they had to kill someone, what method would they choose: shoot them. Or stab them. They aren’t above murder, they do it often. Chemical weapons are also fun, but they aren’t allowed to use them anymore after the Safehouse accidentally got filled with mustard gas that one time

Scarlet- how do they grieve: violently. Lots of murder, lots of stealing. At the Safehouse, where they can’t lash out violently, they have this thing called a “stab pillow”, it’s a throw pillow they started stabbing when they were mad. Also they have their dogs for emotional support (Rexy and Tatsuya my beloved)

Wine- how do they act when they’re drunk: they mellow out a lot actually! Get really tired, but also usually have enough energy to play like drinking games and stuff. Very much a lightweight.

Lipstick- What is their love language: they are aroace, but with their “family”, it’s quality time. They just like being in the presence of people (they aren’t physically affectionate but very touch starved so think of them like a cat on occasion)

Poppy- do they believe in a god: no. God abandoned them.
