new oc refs - and some design notes under the cut!

noah: you all knew rosy maple moth noah was coming, let's admit it! this design for noah is later on in the story, after his transition. when his hair was longer, it was tied up in a bow with the kerchief now around his neck - then the ends of the kerchief looked reminiscent of antennae, while now they resemble wings. noah wears warm, bright colors, which is part of why butterflies gravitate to him so much. his design also has the lightest, softest colors of the main characters, which not only represents his gentle and sweet personality, but also his partial affiliation to the popular kids (via their cabbage butterfly designs; this is mentioned later).

damien: i was actually originally going to make damien a painted lady, but i realized i wanted to have all of the camp's outcasts have moth-inspired designs - so i made damien, an outcast-adjacent, a moth-adjacent: a skipper! and i really wanted to give him flannel, so the common checkered skipper was a good fit. this design, like noah's, is a later one in the story, once the blue dye in his hair has started to fade/grow out, revealing his natural blond - and symbolically revealing that, at least in some ways, damien's status as "outcast" was artificial, and that he'sbeen rejecting his connection to the popular kids.

lexi: death's head moth lexi isn't new - in the story incarnation right before this one she was still butterfly/moth inspired, and had a very cool vest with a "death's head" skull on the back. this new design is the first time her design has majorly changed, as before this she consistently had a jacket/vest, crop top, big sneakers, and purple ponytailed hair - now her design is a lot different, with an outfit inspired by the impeccable style of one of my friends! particularly proud of the idea to have the "death's head" skull design be her belt buckle.

shai: i definitely wanted an iridescent butterfly for shai - before settling on the moth idea i was thinking of making them a morpho. iridescent colors not only display their bright personality, but also their ability to reflect people back to themselves. there's something symbolic to shai and noah being so colorful despite being moths, as opposed to damien being so drab despite technically being a butterfly, but i'll leave it to you to ponder that! (just remember that symbolically moth = outcast and butterfly = popular. or something on those lines!)

other: this isn't about anything present in this ref itself, but about the show's characters as a whole. i think background characters' designs would depend on their affiliations - if they're aligned with lexi's gang they'd be pantry moths, and if they're aligned with the popular kids they'd be cabbage butterflies. on that note, i'm thinking that maybe the leader of the popular kids should be a monarch butterfly, a species so widely recognized, ubiquitous, and popular that it's almost a cliche!

i once read a fic where this person put a big image of a stop sign at the beginning and end of every chapter and wrote this whole long paragraph about how you need to comment or else they wouldn't feel motivated enough to write a next chapter, and at the beginning of every chapter they were like "thanks to everyone who commented, though i did notice that it didn't match the amount of hits so i'm feeling disheartened now....woe is me...." and never in my life have i wanted to reach through a screen and attack a person more

typos in the title. if you can't even catch a typo in your title then i'm flat-out not reading the fic

fics where the author obviously wants to make a political message so they're very doing it through fictional characters and not even trying to make it sound natural or in-character

people who mash a million different fandoms together into one fic so it's 76564678 words long with 28380 chapters but only one or two of them is for the fandom you used the filters specifically to find

on that note, really any time people put a bunch of different oneshots and prompts into a single fic so every chapter is a completely different story but they just put them all together because it's part of the same event even though the series option is right there?? just make them separate fics please i'm begging you

reader-insert fics. they just weird me out

people who "start" a fic but the first chapter is just an author's note talking about how they're GOING to write this fic and haven't yet, but they're working on it, they swear. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT. WHO ARE YOU HELPING. JUST POST THE FIC WHEN YOU'VE ACTUALLY WRITTEN IT WHY ARE YOU POSTING IT WITH ALL THESE TAGS IF YOU HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED THE FIC YET

people who spell damian wayne as damien or damion or any other variation. this is a COMIC BOOK fandom. BOOK. with WORDS. you literally have to READ the name to even know the character exists or to experience the medium at all, how can you fuck something up that badly

"everything is the same except this character is actually the same person as this other character from a completely different fandom" (ex. everything is the same except dick grayson is also harry potter, hannah montana-style) one of the strangest genres i've ever encountered

fics with a length of like. 90 words. and yet the thing has a hundred tags. what is even the point of that. who wants that

On the subject of C and S seeming more awkward:

I partly agree with what anon was saying. Shayne doesn't always react around Courtney like he did way back when. This last stream he really was just stonewalling Courtney's vibe. However, I would argue this is nothing new. There were times like this back during the Twitch days. Entire livestreams where Shayne and Courtney weren't vibing super hard, while other days they were incredibly cute and playful.

I think them dating adds this level of overthinking in terms of how they choose to interact with each other. I know we've discussed this topic here before. Because they probably spend the majority of their free time together, any time they talk about themselves or tell any stories where the other person was probably present, they have to choose their words very carefully as not to oust themselves. Furthermore, they have to hold back on feeling *too* comfortable, expressing any intimacy, or getting *too* touchy, something I think Courtney struggles with the most (because she'll inevitably end up doing it sometimes, lol).

It's this constant overthinking that can kind of kill the Shartney chemistry, I think. Any day one or the other is feeling kind of down or maybe just exhausted, that natural chemistry they have sort of just... dies. Shayne expressed a few times during the Twitch days how incredibly quiet he got because of how tired he would be sometimes, and how fans usually assumed the worst.

Courtney sometimes gets that way too. I remember during the iconic Business Walrus Board AF stream with Damien and Saige, Courtney was just not feeling it that entire stream. Even though they were making some of the funniest jokes they'd ever made (Damien inventing BDSM, Dyson C*ck Sucker), Courtney was still super closed off and low energy.

Not really a conclusive point to this response; just some things to think about. There's probably a lot of different factors at play other than "Dang, their relationship must be going through a rough patch." They could just be tired, stressed, going through any number of things in their private lives that could lead to them seeming a little off.

I feel like I've just shown my entire soul here. Wow.

I get fixated on a different song like every-other-day so I'm not sure... Maybe the line "Please give me the strength to be able to believe until the end, even if it is a lie" from "Itoshi kimi yo" (To the one I love) by Moriyama Naotaro. This song NEVER FAILS to make me cry.

I used to love watching like hour-long YT documentaries but my attention-span has severely gone downhill since the panorama... but I enjoy Bernadette Banner's analyses of historical clothing, Implictly Pretentious' deepdives into the psyches of comicbook movie characters, and NativLang's video essays on various languages and their histories and characteristics.

I never had an imaginary friend as a child (excluding the man-thing that runs alongside the car). Although for a time (in my teens) I had a vampire that would sit by my bedside and protect me as I slept (NO, I was NOT a twilight fan! I was a Vampire Knight fan)

My go-to way to fall asleep is listening to redacted audio. Basically any playlist, any audio (excluding inversion, yandere!ivan)

I don't/hate my name. I just don't associate with it beyond it being what people call me irl. I would change it to either Teigan or Ruri (the former was a cute name I found (and have claimed it in my family should I ever adopt a child) and the latter being the Japanese for the stone lapis lazuli, which I like very much)

...If I was forced to pick only one redacted audio... it'd have to be... Comforted and Cared for By Your Incubus Boyfriend it hits ALL the feels and literally sounds like one big hug that goes straight to my heart.

I understand but don't personally get the appeal for Lasko. Like we'd get on as friends, but /I need to be the submissive, nerdy, soft one, y'know.

Aside from a number of redacted audios, I tend to not read/watch things multiple times apart from maybe Avengers or Iron Man 1. Those were my comfort movies for a while.

Platonically, I'm attracted to Damien. I am also a perfectionist with a strong sense of justice so I feel we'd get pretty well. Also he's a sarcastic mf-er too and no one can tell me otherwise.

Hmm my go-to ramble topic when tired... I ramble about various things. I wish I was someone who had a singular topic. I'll talk your ear off about Language, Japan, various anime/manga, The Mortal Instruments, Animal Crossing, Pokémon, F1, nail art. Tony Stark : Last night.] I'm a walking encyclopedia of useless (to other people) information and I enjoy info-dumping on people, but I try to not do that so much, so when I do I tend to go overboard...

Go-to gas station snack and drink combo: I don't frequent pretrol stations, they're expensive... I'd probably choose crunchy m&ms and a non-carbonated drink that isn't too sweet. (Unrelated but related, my st*rb*cks drink of choice is a match frappuccino, extra matcha, no syrup)

Favourite music playlist: I don't really make playlists, I either just listen to everything on one big shuffle or I listen to an album in order on-repeat.

I don’t know who started it, but there’s this delightful headcanon of a bookish, reader Angel that I can imagine for you. It’d be so cute, him stealing your book and holding it out of your reach, asking who the fuck is “Grim” and what is his deal with the chocolate. He’s the type of partner who would make fun of your possible book hoarding but still buys you everything you touch at the local Barnes & Noble with that good, good Shaw Security money.

Also, he’d- lovingly, adoringly but so meanly- give you hell about your imaginary vampire friend watching you sleep. You’ll so regret telling David that every time he asks if you can make do with a werewolf or if you’d rather him call one of the Solaires.

My Week(s) in Reviews: January 1, 2023

First and foremost... Happy New Year!!

Okay... now let’s get into it. I’m keeping these short because I have little to say about them or they’re going to be featured in My Best of 2022 shortly, anyway, so let’s just go with the old three things format for most of these, yeah? Good.

The Fabelmans (Steven Spielberg, 2022)

1. Wholly feels like the film Spielberg’s been working toward.

2. That final shot is the reason (as if I needed another one) why Spielberg is my favorite director.

3. I’m going to be genuinely shocked if this lands anywhere other than on top of my top films of 2022. - 10/10

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Rian Johnson, 2022)

1. What a cast!!

2. A ton of fun, and it chooses an approach and sticks with it. If you’re underwhelmed with the ‘twists’, that’s kinda the point.

3. Seriously, though... what a cast!! - 8.5/10

Babylon (Damien Chazelle, 2022)

What a clusterf*ck…

It’s very clear Chazelle lost the thread about 40% in. Cutting that whole Tobey storyline would help. Also cut the opening scene, just start on the party. Tighten up Margot’s arc, we didn’t need that snake shit. Cut Jovan’s arc complete, there’s enough there thematically for a separate film. Give that to someone who can tell it in a way that’ll actually resonate. Leave everything with Brad Pitt alone. He was fantastic and his arc is the only one that felt like it progressed and ended naturally. Beautiful, tragic, interesting shit, right there. Actually loved the ending, but a bunch of other late moments for Diego felt sloppy/rushed. The phenomenal editing helps some of the more upsetting issues throughout, but can’t save the film from the total loss of cohesion in the those final acts. Despite all its many flaws, though, I still pretty close to loved about 65% of this film. - 6/10

Avatar: The Way of Water (James Cameron, 2022)

1. Visually stunning. Probably the easiest VFX win since the last, right?

2. Someone should give Fincher the money for his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea... if this film is anything, it’s proof the tech has reached the point where Fincher’s vision is not only possible, but feasible.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (Eric Appel, 2022)

1. This is not only the perfect approach to a Weird Al biopic, I’m pretty sure it’s the only approach to a Weird Al biopic.

2. Very funny if you’re familiar with Yankovic as a person, downright hilarious if you go in only knowing his music.

3. Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna... I repeat, Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna. My God! - 7.5/10

Emily the Criminal (John Patton Ford, 2022)

1. Aubrey Plaza is really damn good.

2. So is just how terribly things go in that third act.

3. The rest... not so much. I really don’t get all the hype. - 5/10

Black Adam (Jaume Collet-Serra, 2022)

1. This is a very bad movie. Very easily one of the worst of the year.

2. Any promise Dwayne Johnson had every shown has been tossed in the garbage for terrible line delivery and tough-guy stares.

3. Pierce Brosnan deserved better than this. An interesting character and perfect casting completely wasted in favor of whatever this shit was supposed to be. - 2/10

The People We Hate at the Wedding (Claire Scanlon, 2022)

1. Not a good movie by any stretch.

2. But Kristen Bell.

3. And Allison Janney. - 5.5/10

A Christmas Story Christmas (Clay Kaytis, 2022)

1. Corny as f*ck.

2. But the type of corny I can get behind.

3. And that Christmas morning was the obvious tear-jerker material I’m a sucker for. - 6/10

The Shop Around the Corner (Ernst Lubitsch, 1940)

1. James Stewart really is one of my all-time favorite actors. Just always so damn good.

2. Love me some Lubitsch, yet for some reason I have so many blind spots with him.

3. I know we live in completely different times, but even looking through the scope of the time, that ending seemed a bit forced. Still a delightful film overall, but she must’ve been really desperate to let the shit he pulled go. - 7/10

Elvis (Baz Luhrmann, 2022)

1. Significantly better than I expected. But painfully overlong.

2. Austin Butler is fantastic. Tom Hanks is (somehow) borderline awful.

3. Baz Luhrmann’s direction is god-awful. But there’s a shit-ton of it, so I guess the Golden Globes look at Directing like the Academy does editing, now. - 5.5/10 (Almost all of those 5.5 are for Butler and the early performance sequences only.)

It's only September 24th and I already have headcanons for what costumes the redacted couples would wear.

I won't be posting it until October though sorryyyy!!

A lot of them are so good, I wish I'd have the energy to draw them but I don't :(

It's headcanons for all the canon redacted couples btw (with the exception of two)

However it doesn't include Damien/Hux (sorry!)

I was gonna include them but I couldn't find any couples costumes that I thought did them justice

It also doesn't include Love (because Marcus is a d!ck), it doesn't include Fred/Bright (because I wasn't here for them), it doesn't include Ivan with either Baby's, and it doesn't include Regulus with his listener, but otherwise I'm pretty sure I got every couple.

I took out Ivan because his series is finished and yet I don't understand his character at all, and I took out Regulus because... Do I even have to explain? Dude's invisible.

The only "non" canon couples I included were Avior/Starlight and Vega/Warden

I might do the other characters individually because I love the idea of Caelum dressing up as the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street

I’m not sure if you have played any Monster Prom Mods but if you have which romantic interest/route would Vicky go for?

Do you think she would be interested in taking a vacation to Heaven with Vera, Polly, and Damien with the Tickets to Heaven route, join the Mina, Polly, and Damien on their quest for the ultimate drink with the F.o.F route, or would she would help Brynn in becoming student council president?

I have played the mods! I also recommend the Vicky prom queen mod by @segasister!

But I think she would go for the tickets to heaven mod, when Vera confirms that they’re real she kind of has a short existential crisis.

“I thought I already was in the afterlife!?”

But she gets over it, is interested in what eternal peace looks like, and hops on board, trying to get Vera, Polly, and Damien to heaven. It's not every day a demon, gorgon, ghost, and reanimated corpse get to go to heaven!

(Vicky takes a glitter pen and writes "F*ck Gordon" on Damien's tattoo.)

She's a little shocked to be standing at the golden, but Polly tugs her in, and the next thing she knows, her blood is wine, and she's dancing in the middle of Damien and Vera in the middle of a kickass rave.

At the end of the route, when they're all home, Vicky jokingly says, "I see why people strive to go to heaven. Maybe I need to clean up my act."

Damien ruffles her hair, "keep dreaming, dork. If you ever go to the grave for real this time, I'm snatching your soul."

"That is," Vera begins, "if she doesn't sell it to me first."

Polly chimes in, "No way! She's becoming a ghost, so this school has two hot poltergeists!"
