hes like. the epitome of the childhood friends to lovers trope
you’ll never know a time where you didn’t love him, and he’ll never know a time where he didn’t love you
the cutest, most adorable, goofiest boyfriend ever!! like having a bestie AND a boyfriend all in one go and it’s the best thing in the world
++ telepathic communication galore. all you have to do is look at him and he’ll know everything that you’re thinking and you’ll know everything he’s thinking. it’s what happens when you know him for years but it’s also because he’s just so so attentive to everything about you and he knows you so well
so clingy. makes fake wailing noises if you let go of his hand for One Second to go get something. minghao challenged him to go five minutes without touching or looking at you while being in the same room and he failed in three seconds.
expect unexpected but also cliche kisses when dating this man omg
kisses under the mistletoe, kisses as fireworks explode around you, BUT ALSO kisses where he just grabs your face and places them on your lips out of nowhere. kisses where he’s fixing your hair and then pecks your nose quickly, shyly <3
he’s the unintentionally heart-fluttering boyfriend, where he thinks he’s just being a Good Person but it makes your heart warm in your chest because he’s just so sweet to you, always.
Tumblr media
“Junhui! Incoming!”
Stepping through the front door, Junhui looks up at your shout, and has the laughter knocked out of him as you launch yourself into his arms, making him stagger back a little at the force of your hug.
“Someone’s excited to see me, hm?” he teases, and you bury your head into his shoulder.
“Of course, you’ve been out the whole day,” you say. “Missed you.”
You say it so naturally, so easily, as if it’s as simple as that, and he smiles at you and thinks that it really is.
“Aw, you missed me!” he hugs you tighter, and you’re laughing as he rocks you from side to side, pretending to be absolutely overcome with emotion as he lets out fake sobs. "My lovely Y/N missed me!"
He plants wet, exaggerated kisses all over your cheek and you yelp and try to push him away, wriggling out of his arms.
"Ew! Okay, actually I didn't miss you at all, you can walk back out of the door," you say, and grin as he whines sadly.
"No, no, don't say that!" he says, and you laugh and lightly push him away when he comes closer. "Hey, don't push me away!"
There's a scuffle as you try to run away, but he has his arms around you almost instantly so you can't move, both of you laughing.
"Hey! Let me go!"
"Never," he declares, in a silly, dramatic voice, but then his laughter dies down as he tilts your chin upwards ever so delicately.
And then his voice is going soft, eyes warm and melting into yours as he cups your face and kisses you, impossibly sweet.
"Love you," he says, and kisses your nose for good measure. "And I missed you too."

You’ve Got To Be Kidding
Masterlist Warnings: Mild cursing, obviously cliche tropes because look who’s writing it, love triangles galore, all of it  Chapter 2
“Who’s Y/N?”
Jim scrubbed a hand down his face as he looked at the girl in front of him. “She’s my niece. She’s like you, El.”
The girl frowned. “Like me? What do you mean?”
He paused for a moment, not quite sure how to answer the question. “She knows the Upside Down. And she has a number too.”
Her eyebrows furrowed and her dark curly hair fell in her face. “Really?” That surprised her. She’d had brief flashes of memories, seeing one or two others in a room with her. But she hadn’t ever thought much about it.
Jim nodded. “She’ll be here in a few days. And she’s gonna have someone else with her that can help us.”
El nodded, chewing on her bottom lip. She might be young, but she knew trouble when she saw it. She’d been through her fair share. And this situation smelled exactly like trouble. She wondered how Y/N would react to being back in Hawkins, especially if she came from the lab. El was still having her own difficulties in processing things. She wondered what type of power Y/N had, if she even had a power at all. But from the way Hop was talking, there was something special about the other girl. Something that El didn’t know if she wanted to trifle with.
~*~*~*~*~
You scowled at the car in front of you, crossing your arms and not looking at the man beside you. He snorted at your displeasure, more amused than anything.
“Just get in the car, Y/N.” he said.
“Just get in the car, Y/N,” you mocked, turning your sharp glare on Bucky. He just raised an eyebrow as you continued your rant. “I have absolutely no intention of getting in that deathtrap with you.”
Bucky let out an exasperated sigh, a few strands of his hair falling into his face. He was getting tired of your attitude. In reality, it was anything but a deathtrap. It was one of Tony’s nicer SUVs, one that had plenty of room for the both of you plus the few bags you were bringing.
You’d always had a weird thing about riding in cars. Well, anything that ran on a motor, really. You’d gotten so accustomed to simply blinking to where you wanted to be that being in a vehicle actually scared you. And being scared wasn’t something you liked to experience.
“Look, if it’ll make you feel better, I won’t go very fast.” He knew what you were trying to do; trying to delay this little excursion for as long as humanly possible. He didn’t really blame you. He wasn’t exactly looking forward to it either. But you didn’t see him procrastinating.
You narrowed your eyes and gave him a scrutinizing gaze. You knew that was a lie, but you appreciated the effort he was trying to put into this. The effort he was putting into trying to be civil. The response you gave came out as more of a mumble than anything else, but he took it as confirmation. He grabbed the duffel from your hands and threw it in the back with his before putting his backpack on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat and climbing into the Ford. “Coming?”
You huffed in response but followed his example. The messenger bag you carried with you held your laptop and a few hard copy files that you planned on studying during the trip to Hawkins. You were obviously uncomfortable with the situation, and Bucky could see that. But his attitude wasn’t really helping things either.
“Look, I’m not any more excited about this trip than you are, Y/L/N, but let’s try to get through this without ripping each other’s head off, alright?”
“Fine. Whatever.” you snapped.
Bucky growled at your attitude. “And that’s not helping.”
You just glared, not bothering to answer him. It wasn’t worth the fight it would bring.
“Goody for me,” he grumbled under his breath, gripping the wheel with his left hand and shifting it into gear with his right. You glanced at him as you settled yourself into the seat and got comfortable. His jaw was clenched, making the muscle pop slightly, and his eyes were focused in front of him.
Catching yourself looking at him for longer than you thought appropriate, you quickly averted your eyes to the floorboard. As he began to drive, you felt your heart began to race. Your breathing became a bit shallower and your grip on the door became tight knuckled.
“It’s okay, Y/N.” he said quietly. “Just breathe.”
You looked at him, wondering if you’d heard him correctly. Did he just try to provide you with a small bit of comfort?
He didn’t take his eyes off the road, though he could see you out of his peripheral vision. He didn’t need you having a panic attack before even getting off the compound property. “Deep breath in. Let it out slowly.”
Shaking the thought off, you followed his advice and felt yourself gradually relax into the rhythm of the car’s movements. It took a solid twenty minutes of tense silence and a few brief moments of terror. But needless to say, you were calmer now than you were when you first got into the vehicle.
Realizing that you spent that much time in an awkward silence, you reached for the radio. When you popped the button to turn it on, you and Bucky both jumped at the death metal that came blaring through the speakers. Your already sensitive ears rang with the sound of the loud guitar and Bucky visibly winced.
“Sorry,” you muttered, quickly turning it down and changing the channel.
He didn’t say anything, just clenched his jaw more. The thought struck you that if he kept doing that his face would stick in that position. The thought made you crack a smile that you had to hide behind your hand and a laugh that you had to cover with a cough. You knew this was going to be one of the longest trips you’d ever taken, but maybe you would be willing to shoot at being civil with the super soldier for once.
“Something funny?” Bucky asked, glancing sideways at you.
“Keep scowling like that and your face’ll stick.” you said with half a smile. You made sure to put a light edge to your tone so that he would know you were only joking. It seemed to work, as all he did in response was roll his eyes.
Having the radio turned to a rock station and the volume down low seemed to help ease a bit of the tension that still hung in the air. You were still on edge and you figured Bucky was as well. He didn’t say anything, but you could tell from his movements and his posture that he wasn’t relaxed. Sighing quietly to yourself, you closed your eyes and leaned your head back against the headrest.
There was a lot of work you had to do before you got to Hawkins. Hop had sent you as much as he could without getting on the government’s radar, not that it really mattered. He still wasn’t hip on the idea of sharing that much sensitive information over the internet despite how many times you reassured him that it wasn’t traceable or hackable.
Feeling the heavy weight of the necklace on your sternum, you glanced down. The onyx colored gem was glowing slightly, the weight of it warming your skin. And that was yet another issue that you had to work out. Whatever was interfering with your connection to the Dimension was getting worse. And it was having a physical effect on you.
You were normally stubborn and feisty to begin with, but your attitude over the last few weeks had worsened. You snapped easily at everyone and your moods were constantly shifting. You’d even thrown Sam across the compound for making an ill timed joke.
Everyone tried to be understanding of what was happening, but you knew it was wearing on them. And you weren’t sure how much longer they were going to put up with you. Tony seemed to be the most resilient, as he had known you the longest. But even so, his patience was being tested.
“Can I ask you something?” you said, turning your attention to the super soldier on your left.
Bucky raised an eyebrow as he glanced at you. “You just did.” You rolled your eyes and bit back a snarky response. Seeing the effort you put into not being sarcastic, he nodded. “Shoot.”
“Do you ever feel…alone? Like you don’t belong with everyone?”
Bucky was taken aback by the question, looking away from the road to examine your expression. Judging that you had no apparent ulterior motive, he answered carefully. “Sometimes,” he said. “I know I’ve done a lot of really bad things in the past. I don’t think Tony has forgiven me for what happened…and I don’t blame him. I think that puts a damper on my presence.”
You pursed your lips, nodding slowly. Tony was always like a big brother to you. You knew him inside and out. And you knew he still held some resentment for the super soldier beside you. But you also knew that he wouldn’t let those feelings get in the way of cooperating to save the world.
Deciding to approach the topic cautiously, Bucky phrased his next question carefully. “What about you?”
You nodded. “Yeah. My powers aren’t exactly user friendly. And it makes me volatile and dangerous.”
Bucky glanced at you briefly. Your knees were pulled up to your chest and you rested your chin on them. Emotion rolled off you in waves, but there were so many that he couldn’t make heads or tails of what you were feeling. But tears welled in your eyes as you continued staring out the windshield.
“I don’t like it…” you said after a moment of silence. “I don’t like what these powers to do me…what they make me do to everyone else. I’m not even me when I use them. I don’t even know who I am anymore…”
He let out a sigh and gripped the steering wheel. He may not know exactly what you were feeling or what you were going through, but he had some semblance of an idea. “Look…putting yourself back together after having your identity stripped away isn’t easy.”
You snorted. “Yeah. Like you would know.”
Bucky held back a growl. He was trying to reach you, not push you away. “Actually, I do.” he said.
That gave you pause. You knew a little bit about Bucky’s past, but no one, including him, had been eager to talk about it. So you learned what you could from the museums. Half of which you knew to be nothing more than made up stories to get better press. You knew there was something deeper, some sort of dark secret that no one wanted to tell you. But before you could say anything, he continued talking.
“I was an assassin for an organization called Hydra. You know enough about them and have taken down enough of their bases to know what kind of terrorists they are. I wasn’t the only human experiment they had, but I was the most effective. I was sent to kill Steve.”
Your eyes widened. You didn’t know that.
“To make an extremely long story short, he managed to break me out of the trance Hydra had me in. They would periodically wipe my mind of all memories except core instincts. I was the perfect fighting machine. I don’t know how he did it, but he pulled me out of it. He unlocked some sort buried memory.”
He paused to take a breath and you waited patiently for him to continue. You could tell how difficult it was for him to open up about it. And you doubted he talked about it with many people. Hell, Tony probably didn’t even know the whole story. But the fact he was opening up to you of all people spoke wonders.
“Since then it’s been nothing but a mess of me trying to put my memories back together to find out who I am. I’ve had to remake myself. And that wasn’t easy.” He glanced over at you at the tail end of his sentence, trying to gauge how much of what he was saying was actually reaching you.
You were about to say something when you happened to glance up. “Bucky!” you screamed, grabbing his flesh arm with a bone snapping force and throwing yourself back into the seat.
Surprised by the sudden outburst and with his reflexes taking over, Bucky immediately slammed on the brakes, making you scream once again as you were thrown forwards, the seatbelt the only thing keeping you from flying towards the windshield.
Your breath came in ragged gasps as the vehicle went skidding across the road, Bucky barely able to control it. Your grip on his arm increased and you thought he hissed in pain as the SUV came to a sudden and rapid halt.
Bucky glanced over at you before staring straight ahead, noticing for the first time the large black hole in front of them.
He made sure that you were still breathing before he unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car. “What the hell?” he muttered to himself.
“Bucky, Bucky no!” you exclaimed, trying to free yourself of the constricting seatbelt that had you strapped in place. It wouldn’t come undone, even with you yanking on it.
Bucky on the other hand was standing beside the front of the car, looking at the portal with interest. That’s what it was. A portal to the Dimension. But he didn’t realize that. And if you didn’t pull him away from it in time, it would swallow him.

So ya know how I was feeling really angry yesterday? I wrote this to cope with that.

Coming Unglued
Virgil didn't like getting angry. Hated what it did to him when he did get heated. Usually he tried to keep better control of himself and his emotions. Tried not to let his magic grab hold of his emotions and do whatever it pleased in response to them.
But occasions like this when someone was threatening the safety of someone he loved? He really couldn't care less. Didn't give a single damn that while storming into prison lightning seemed to arc off his heels with every lift of his foot. There wasn't a single fuck in him when he waved his hand at an attacking prison guard and a strong gust of wind threw him into the stone wall.
The thing about Virgil when he was angry, his storm magic was most prominent. Lightning and wind and rain were all at his fingertips when he was furious enough to lose his ability to care about hurting people.
He'd probably regret it later, but right now when he had a man wrongly imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit to save from slaughter the only thing Virgil regretted was not taking action sooner.
"Someone alert the ward!"
Virgil snarled, reaching a hand out towards the first guard that tried to run off and yanking backwards, wind following the action and forcing the man on his back. Before he could get back up, anger flared in his chest and lightning surged from the air and snapped against the man's chest, the smell of burnt flesh filling the air as the fabric of his clothes caught fire.
Another guard ran off, but before Virgil could stop him the other guards surrounded him.
"Stop! You're under ar-"
The guard who called the initial order to get the warden was cut off by Virgil throwing his hand in his direction and lightning shooting from his fingertips.
He stood his ground, though he screamed at the agony of the burning electricity enveloping him.
More guards approached him, and Virgil let out an angry growl as their own shadows shot to wrap around their ankles, making several come to a sudden stop and a few fall to their knees.
“He’s a dark mage!”
Virgil really isn’t. He’s just angry, and trying to get to the man he loved and get him out of prison just because he was accused of dark magic for being a scientist.
Logan didn’t even have any magic. Not like Virgil did.
A guard swung his sword at him, and he jerked back. Not fast enough though, there was still a cut going from his shoulder to his chest. Blood stained his clothes, cotton fabric soaking and clinging to his skin.
He let out an angry, pained scream and a gust of wind tangled with shadows burst from him, scattering the men surrounding him and sending them to the ground.
With everyone on the ground, some bleeding due to impact with his hardened shadows, others regaining their breath, Virgil took advantage of the distraction and continued his way into the prison.
The second he was inside, truly inside underground where the cells were, deafening silence crushed Virgil. His chest felt tight and he felt like he couldn’t breathe.
He couldn’t let himself panic now. There was still a lover to get out of here.
“Logan?” Virgil called, his voice strained, shaking as he struggled to keep up his anger, keep the one thing that was preventing him from running out of steam, from feeling the pain in his shoulder, from panicking at the enclosing stone walls.
There was no answer. He was further in, and Virgil would have to go even further.
“Fuck everyone’s paranoia over magic,” he growled.
Though his voice was angry, his steps were uneven and lightning no longer arced off his feet.
Until he found Logan’s cell, and Logan was bruised and bloody and barely able to hold his head up when he called for him.
Virgil’s anger flared, but he tamped it down long enough to shape a shadow into a lockpick and start working on the cell door.
“I’m gonna get you out of here, Lo. I promise.”
“Oh, you promise, do you? Careful not to say things you can’t follow through on.”
Virgil stiffened, turning to face the prison warden and snarling when he saw the face of a man he had hated since childhood.
“Oh, Virgil! It’s you. I should have recognized the empty promise and reckless magic,” Nathim said, cruel smile twisting his face into something ugly.
“Nathim. You of all people know better than Logan being a mage,” he snarled, his anger mounting up into fury until his voice started doubling on itself.
The man sighed, pulling his arms from behind his back as he held a ball of dark light in his hand.
Virgil struggled to stay in place. Recognizing the ball as plague magic he’d used on his mother when Virgil refused to go with him. If that magic touched him or Logan they’d immediately collapse sick with the plague that Nathim was slowly unleashing on the town.
“Oh I know. I just… missed you I supposed. I figured I’d bring you by for a visit.”
Shooting to his feet, Virgil snarled. Lightning and wind and shadows started swirling around him, but when Logan let out a pained groan, he forced himself to calm down enough for his magic to pull away from him.
“That’s right, Virge. Calm down that magic you clearly still haven’t learned to control so you won’t hurt Logan.”
Nathim seemed to relish in Virgil’s struggle to restrain himself so he wouldn’t hurt his lover.
...That didn’t necessarily mean Virgil couldn’t do anything though.
“Why the hell have you popped up now? It’s been six years since your last pathetic attempt at getting me to join whatever rule the country plot you had cooked up,” Virgil asked, flexing his fists as he glared at the dark mage.
Nathim sighed, staring at the plague magic he held in his hand and playing with the ball of dark light.
“Like I said, I missed you Virgil. Surely you recognize how powerful you are? You could do great things with the kind of magic you have.”
Virgil scoffed, digging his nails into his palms to keep a tight control on his magic.
“And I told you when you first made that argument I don’t care. I’d rather live my life quietly, Nathim. Stop fucking that up.”
“Oh, I’m the one who’s ruining your dreams of a quiet life? You killed two men on your way in here, Virgil. If you even want to think about safety after that you’ll have to leave the town entirely, and even then I’m sure the king wouldn’t want such a dangerous magic user running free.”
Virgil inhaled sharply at that, the reminder of why he hated getting angry like frozen water running down his spine. His control on his magic wavered, but one look at the knowing grin on Nathim’s face ignited his rage again.
“Get fucked, Nate,” he snapped, and then a shadow he’d been working on strengthening and feeding lightning into during the whole conversation struck forward, shooting through Nathim’s chest.
The plague magic in his hand abruptly went out, and Virgil felt a sick satisfaction in seeing the surprise on Nathim’s face as he looked at the shadow.
Virgil’s shadows were never tangible enough to pierce through so much flesh and bone, at most they could do the damage of a dull blade. But he’d fed lightning into that one, so the sight of Nathim collapsing from electricity coursing through his insides was not a surprising one.
He wasn’t sure if Nathim was dead, but at the moment he didn’t care. Virgil just wanted to get Logan out of the cell and work on bringing him somewhere safe.
There was a healer his mom used to be friends with before she died. Virgil remembered playing with his son on their visits, and they lived just outside the kingdom. If he didn’t stop to rest, he might be able to make it to see Patton and his father in two or three days.
As Virgil got the cell door open and crouched next to Logan so he could pick him up carefully, he figured that one thing Nathim got right was that he would be on the run for a long time.
He didn’t care though. Not right now when he had to get Logan to the healer and make sure he was okay.
“Virgil?” Logan groaned, and Virgil shushed him, giving his lover a small smile.
“Get some sleep, Lo. I’ve gotta get you to a healer, we’ll be there in no time.”
Logan hummed and nestled himself into Virgil’s chest.
God he loved this man. Let’s just hope he’d still love him, when he finds out what Virgil did to get him out of there.
(If Virgil had the ability to look into the future, he’d see that Logan would never stop loving him, no matter what.)

📖 for your oldest oc. Thanks!
📖 What inspired you to make that character? Songs, other characters, vibes?
Oldest OC, huh...
Oldest from the ones I take seriously would be Oliver.
So actually, me and my family were in the living room, watching something of Marvel, though I don't remember what it was, exactly... This was about 2-3 months ago, and I was half watching it, and I thought, "Huh. Those superhero costumes look super annoying. Annoying to design, to wear, to come up with, and probably expensive, too."
I started thinking, like, what if there was a superhero, and he was literally... just some guy...?
But not comedically average or anything, really. He's a guy, he has superpowers, and he sees it as that and only that.
My original idea was that he'd wear basic workout clothes instead of a costume, and that he'd be mistaken for a civilian until he literally starts flying or something.
Also, he doesn't feel the need to hide his identity, since he purposefully moved several hours away from his family, and also has no actual superhero name.
Just, this guy, about to fight some sort of mutant supervillian, like:
"Aha! So you're the one I have to fight, is it? Tell me, puny creature, what is your name?"
*in between cliche evil laughs*
"Oliver."
...
"Okay... But your superhero name...?"
"Don't have one."
And now evil supervillian guy is confused.
"Okay, then... Oliver!" he calls out. "I have come to rain death and destruction upon you and your people! The Oliver that the people know will be- You really don't have some sort of name? Because this isn't striking fear into the hearts of citizens if your name is just 'Oliver.'"
And he shakes his head.
I imagined this argument, and several other similar encounters. Albeit, this was a few months ago, and this has been a bit more developed since then. Instead of just a few comedic scenes living in my head, I came up with a sort of premise.
There's a superhero formula-- Dark Backstory, Costume, Hardship, and if they start young (which Oliver did), then there's a sort of apprenticeship. But Oliver has no tragic backstory, and the usual cartoon logic of the fantasy sci-fi universes doesn't apply to him. This shows more when it comes to his powers and schedule, but basically, while other superheroes are more... omnipotent? I suppose? He has more realistic limitations.
The more I develop this, the more like a cartoon it's seeming, though that was the original goal. Unfortunately, I don't know how to animate and suck at drawing, so I'm just writing it out. At least for now.
The inspiration for this stemmed form Marvel, DC, My Hero Academia, Saiki K, One Punch Man, and things of that sort. Tropes and meta crap galore, because that's what I enjoy.
Thanks for the asks, and sorry for rambling!

I was having a really hard night. At the end of a really hard week. And then I decided to watch Hartenstraat...
Tumblr media
And it was just what I needed. Those curls. Those dimples. Freckles galore.
Tumblr media
Also a cute if cliched story. It was impressive how they packed every single rom-com trope into a single film! And as a bonus, there was lots and lots of lip-biting, which is my new favourite thing.
So I can definitely recommend Hartenstraat as a mood booster. Tomorrow, angst can return, but for tonight, I’m glad I kept it light.

The Gilded Wolves

The Gilded Wolves Book Review by Roshani Chokshi
This book was...I can’t quite place it.
I definitely enjoyed it! And to me, it seemed like the reading experience went very quickly, which is usually synonymous with an enjoyable read, but there were definitely other moments when my head would cock to the side and I would think, “Huh?” and “I don’t get it” and “What even is happening right now?”
That about sums about my experience with The Gilded Wolves, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
No, but really,
is the epitome of my exact taste and preference when it comes to a YA novel, at least on paper. Let’s go through the list:
1. A group of misfits coming together in some sort of friendship group/intimate team? Check.
2. Banter and fluid dialogue? Check.
3. Whimsy, magic, imagination, and world building steeped in exaggerated history? Check.
4. Romance galore? Check and check.
So if this novel checked all of the boxes, why aren’t I lauding it as the best thing I’ve ever read?
I’ll get to that, don't worry.
First, I’ll start by saying that this book isn't the most original thing I’ve ever read. In fact, it probably doesn't even crack the top ten. This criticism will likely come up time and time again so I’ll just say it from the get go: having all the ingredients for a good book does not make it a good book. I do think The Gilded Wolves is a fun, fluid, and interesting read, but it's not the best in any category compared to other YA books out there.
It’s not the best romance, the best friendship, the best magic, the best history, the most well-written, and it’s certainly not the best heist novel I've read, that cake definitely goes to Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows.
It’s like this novel has everything you want and nothing at all simultaneously.
Our main characters consist of a group of five individuals, all within their stereotypical archetypes of course.
You’ve got the stone-cold calculating leader that chews cloves of all things, the beautiful girl that’s sort of a robot, the half Filipino boy who struggles with his identity and proving himself, the flamboyant aristocratic outsider, and the girl who can only think, breathe, and speak science, but doesn’t understand a modicum of social interaction or communication.
They were good characters, but they just weren’t the best. They weren’t memorable in the slough that is the ocean of YA original characters. They had good moments of banter, friendship, and interaction, but also moments of overbearing cliche, unbelievable character dialogue options, and very predictable motivations and actions.
The plot is worse believe it or not.
The bare bones of the story is that you have a society in which there are secret Houses that possess Babel rings-artifacts that display their House’s standing as well as give them unique powers- and things called Babel fragments which are buried...somewhere.
These fragments essentially gift certain people of the population abilities and advantages while other people are just...normal, I guess. I don’t know, no one seems to care about the disparity.
Then there are other things like Sphinxes which are...guards, I think? But not? I actually don’t even know if they’re truly human. And other cool technological and magical items like Mneno Bugs which record stuff and umm, Tezcat Doors which allow you to see out, but not in or something?
If you haven't caught on by now, the magic and world building of this novel has much to be desired.
It’s like Chokshi has the ideas down, the rough outline of what her world looks like and how it operates and how the characters live and struggle in this world, but instead of giving it to us, she gave us the Sparknotes version.
Half the time I was reading, I felt like I was missing a good 50% of the content needed for the stakes and tension to actually mean something, which is such a shame because her ideas are interesting. They have so much potential.
I love the idea of old Houses and historic artifacts and complicated political histories interwoven with social implications and new-age technology, but the world-building and magic system just falls flat on his face. I needed more from Chokshi about the world and how it operated and less conversation about Tristan’s goddamn tarantula.
We read as our main group of five attempt to steal and retrieve a Horus Eye-some piece of something that acts as a Somno-a default button basically-to Babel Fragments. Confused? I am too.
This book, at the end of the day, is nothing special, but it is enjoyable. This book has several tropes and several things I love, which honestly made this a fun, amusing, and worthwhile read. I’ve actually already gone out to buy the sequel The Silvered Serpents already which is a positive connotation in and of itself.
I genuinely found this book delightful, but I also think it's because the parts that comprise this novel are all things I adore, whilst the sum of the parts is...lackluster and unforgettable.
Since we are still in Quarantine and I miss concerts dearly, here is a metaphor for you: if anything, this is the opener to the band that you've actually waited at the concert to see. The opener isn’t horrible by any means, and it’s similar to other musical artists you like, but it’s not the main attraction or the highlighted draw, and at the end of the night, you’ll forget you watched it in the first place.
Recommendation: If you like what I like, which are misfit groups, romance, historical Paris, magic, and heist novels, then you will definitely find it as engrossing and fun as I did. If you want something to rock your world, to compete with the likes of other YA juggernauts, then well, this book is not for you. Go read Six of Crows instead.
Score: 6/10

GROW ...
-plantser leaning towards pantser -never knows what the end of their book is gonna be before they write it -cONTEMPORARY FICTION -extremely sentimental and it Shows -writes consistently but the wc goes slowly up as they grow ;) -at least one scene of the mc returning to their childhood home -prob more platonic-centered than romantic
IDLE TOWN ...
-definitely very romantic but not necessarily romance if that makes sense -vvv purple prosey -found family -small towns !! small towns !! small towns !! -sunset & midnight & sunrise scenes -pantser -definitely follows tropes
CHECKMATE ...
-just murder -v crimecore -kills off every character they possibly can -sad endings galore -lovers-to-enemies -death trope to the extreme -f a n t a s y -writing is their therapy and the reason they need therapy
CRUSH CULTURE ...
-definitely very diverse cast -writes at 3am w soft music -consistently writes abt 100 words a day and somehow racks up a really high wc -lots of dialogue -bitter asf and it comes across in their writing a Lot -realistic fic but not cliche in the slightest
ASTRONOMY ...
-plotter -speculative fic or scifi -all about the metaphors -definitely a huge procrastinator and in denial abt how little they write -draws inspiration from other others and their irl lives -v aesthetic -spends more time making graphics or doodles than actually writing or plotting

might i add! sophie has a 4k t.v. (don't ask how) and whenever her boys are sick, she finds new netflix shows to binge. keefe and fitz l o v e it. some of their favorites are stranger things, i am not okay with this, and love is blind. don't ask me why those shows. i don't know.
yes!! this is important!!
sophie would love being able to keep up with an aspect of human culture and everyday life – and fitz and keefe would love getting involved, too! human media and entertainment is drastly different from any elvin productions they’ve seen – by far. humans are a lot more… dark? and violent? but…. it’s intriguing. fitz isn’t keen on r-rated movies, though, because the violence gets Very graphic. keefe can only stomach a few. sophie’s kinda just Used to it
i feel like fitz would be into (some) documentaries and movies based on true events. he’s a knowledge sponge, guys! an adorable little nerd! he loves to learn about prominent figures in human culture and pieces of their history. it intrigues him. (and sometimes terrifies him. seriously, how are humans so violent?)
still, even if it gives him a bit of a stomach-ache sometimes, he always appreciates the effort put into the film.
think The Act, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, Miss Americana (Netflix), Gaga: Five Foot Two (Netflix), RBG, Apollo 11, Bohemian Rhapsody…
also fitz watches Animal Planet and other series similar to it because he loves animals don’t @ me.
okay but fitz is also a sucker for rom-coms and coming-of-age stories
he loves the movies where teenagers find their way in life. he loves the movies where the characters find their soulmate. he loves the tropes and the cliches and the coffee shops. he loves the sweet and sappy movies. and honestly? the cheesier the better.
a few of those get on keefe’s nerves, but for the most part keefe also likes them. (yet, he won’t admit it).
think 16 Wishes, Mean Girls (keefe really likes that one, too), Eighth Grade, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Netflix), Love, Simon, I Am Not Okay With This (Netflix)….
mystery/thrillers are also hella rad!! fitz loves picking out one and playing a game with sophie and keefe. they want to see who can guess the plot twist or killer first – and whoever can wins a favor (sound familiar ;) )
think Get Out, Black Mirror (Netflix), Gone Girl, Knives Out, Misery, Black Swan…
while fitz is into more psychological thrillers, keefe likes anything and everything generically dubbed ‘freaky’. (he thinks pennywise is pretty cool. he draws him once and sophie is both amazed and off-put by how realistic it looks)
sophie’s pretty into the horror category herself, so her and keefe can empathize on the interest. fitz is downright confused as to how they could enjoy something like that. (if it’s movie time and keefe or sophie picks one of those, fitz claims the Middle Cuddle Spot so that he’s cushioned between the two of them and can easily hide under the covers or their arms.)
keefe also likes comedy, action, chick-flicks, drama, (some) musicals… you know, this boy can basically roll with anything. does he have his favourites? yes. but can he settle down and watch something with sophie and fitz that he wouldn’t normally choose? also yes
think Megamind, Lost In Space (Netflix), Good Girls (Netflix), The Dragon Prince (Netflix), Into The Spiderverse, Pitch Perfect, Mamma Mia!, Easy A, Dirty Dancing, Us….
let’s state the obvious – keefe and fitz are both into disney. especially disney princess movies.
and i’m serious about that!!! not as a joke, like, “oh, haha, they like the princess movies?”
yes bitch they like the princess movies
keefe’s favourite is probably Tangled.
flynn rider is suave and has keefe’s charm/humor! maximus is tough and snarky when you meet, but he can soften up, and keefe relates to that! pascal knows how to put up a fight! and rapunzel herself is brave and adventurous and there for the people she cares about; and that’s all keefe has ever wanted to do. (also wielding a frying pan as a weapon is badass)
also, as much as it might hurt to say it, keefe relates to rapunzel, the abuse she suffered, and the trap she was in. the strong storyline and accurate depiction hits home.
fitz’s is probably Frozen. he loves the sisterly action they have going there, okay?? like how badass is anna? how badass is elsa? how badass are these women together?
sophie’s is Mulan. she’s such a strong and powerful role model to look up to! and the humor is PEAK.Mulan is also from sophie’s childhood, so that makes it even more special. the fact that she gets to share it with keefe and fitz…. magical.
also sophie lowkey wants to follow in mulan’s footsteps and slice her hair into a bi bob with a sword. see this post of mine ; )
sci-fi gets all of them. they like the adventure and the morals in the stories, the warnings for the future. they like the undiscovered planets, the tricky tech, and the general imagination that went into producing it.
think The Matrix, Star Wars, Alien, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar, Tau (Netflix), Wall-E, I Am Mother (Netflix), Ready Player One…
they all have some shared favourite movies and shows, though, where their tastes align.
think Stranger Things (Netflix) (they find it seriously freaky and amusing how similar it is to them/their situation), Once Upon a Time (these are the fairytales sophie grew up learning about?), Dark (Netflix) (does it get much better than time travel??), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix) (again!! badass women galore!! it’s awesome!!), the OA (Netflix) (it’s shrouded with mystery), the Rain (Netflix) (this one is a big adventure!!), the Umbrella Academy (Netflix) (i mean, c’mon, they have to save the world from the apocalypse, isn’t that pretty rad in and of itself?), A Quiet Place (this one… fucking brilliant. they’re all dead silent as they watch it and it’s such a powerful movie that they feel weird making sound when it finishes… they watch it again and again and again.), Onward (it’s adorable as FUCK and keefe may cry a little everytime they watch it)…
so, yeah! keefe and fitz really appreciate human media (and it especially comes in handy when they’re sick)
but let’s all admit it…. sometimes human productions are extremely Stupid and low-budget/general low-quality.
so, there’s always fun in picking out a movie or show to laugh/cringe at because it’s just that bad.
take this one chinese television series on netflix
it seriously looked good. it did.
but then they watched it.
it went well at the start but then?? the main love interest?? was just an asshole??
and why did the protag continue to put up with his bullshit?? he punched the wall next to her face until his knuckles were bleeding?? she was crying?? oh and he kissed her repeatedly when she said stop??? oh and now he threw food at her that she spent time making for him???? sophie??? what the absolute fuck are humans on????
the show’s called Meteor Garden (Netflix)

2) Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
I don’t think I’ve ever written a story where the AU is set in the past - I’ve taken shows like Downton Abbey and pushed them into the present, but I’ve never written something like a Regency or Victorian AU. The research I know I would need to do to feel confident about writing a fic set in the 1800s is a bit daunting, but I also think it’d be a lot of fun. I love a good regency romance and a Victorian murder mystery. One of these days I think I might try it.
I’ve also never written a Vampire AU although I’ve started thinking about it several times. I keep getting distracted with little practical details like how the fuck does that even work and I never get out of the planning stage.
5) Share one of your strengths.
For the most part I think I’m a pretty organize writer. Stories I’m serious about I have an outline and a plan for what I want to get out of the overall piece and the directions I want to explore. I know my characters to a pretty good degree because I’ve planned out the broad strokes of their backstories, their timeline, even what they’re wearing in a given scene. I have a pretty strong vision of who the people in the story are, where they are, and where this is going. I’ve got excel sheets and powerpoint presentations galore about Bell, Book, and Candle for example. There’s even a master timeline so anytime I write a fic for Babies and Busters I can place it and know what’s going on in Janine and Egon’s life in a given year.
6) Share one of your weaknesses.
I’m such a planner that sometimes I never actually write the damn story. It’s pure paralysis by analysis. I’ve spent all my creative energies in building the background details that my muse has no energy to actually craft the narrative or put words on a page. There are so many outlines on my laptop for stories that I’ve crafted and planned and that I will probably never, ever write. It also means I’m not always flexible with taking on other people’s ideas and suggestions for a character/plot/direction which is terrible because I can get stuck in a box and there’s someone YELLING the solution at me and I don’t listen.
38) Talk about a review that made your day.
They all do - as cliche as that is. I really do love reviews, I crave that positive reinforcement.
I guess I really value the reviews that have sparked conversation and even friendship - I really love talking about writing and stories and the fandoms I’m in so any review that does that is amazing. I appreciate AO3 letting me reply directly to reviews in a thread because I can participate in the conversation and make friends!
I also always find it interesting when someone either quotes or indicates a part of the story/chapter they found funny or interesting. There are things I write and think YES, this is the laugh line or this is the part of the story that is the most interesting/unique/going to get people thinking. I like seeing if I’m right, I really like when I’m totally wrong and it’s some throwaway line I don’t even remember writing that has the person keyboard-smashing and laughing.

What are your top 10 favorite games of all time?
From favorite to least favorite, here are my top ten fave video games and the reason why I like them so much:
Detroit: Become Human (The story is compelling, the characters endearing, the mechanics interesting, and the overall concept has a lot of potential to be explored);
Fallout (Likeable companions and NPCs, as well as emotionally heavy side stories and moral conundrums. The stories of Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4 specifically have a lot of potential that Bethesda could have explored more, but oh well...);
Dishonored (All three games have amazing plotlines, the mechanics are pretty rad especially how they diverge between characters, and the pathways while linear still feel pretty different and are both still quite vengeful in their own right.);
Until Dawn (It's a cheesy cliche horror trope game, but god does it deliver some good scares when the wendigo plot begins! The characters are all pretty much assholes, but still charming in their own right);
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Blue Rescue Team (This is purely out of emotional attachment. This was my very first Pokemon game, and the plot and characters have nestled closely to my heart since I've played it. Thinking about it feels like returning home after a very long time.);
Don't Starve (The lore is mostly delivered through trailers and character quotes, but other than that the entire game is a dynamic survival experience with some added silliness here and there. The character designs are A+, and the multiplayer option is tons of fun);
FusionFall (I didn't get to play it for a long time, but when I did the experience took me quite by surprise. For a Cartoon Network based MMORPG, FusionFall was surprisingly wholesome and the community wasn't overwhelming. It was nice to fight alongside characters that I'd grown up with, and I honestly wish there were more MMOs like it.);
Dead by Daylight (Survival games are fun. Survival games where you can terrorize your friends as an unkillable monster are better. Add a little lore here and there, some unique abilities and designs, and you got an interesting concept!);
Overwatch (I'll admit it's not the gameplay that interests me, but the lore behind the characters. There's a ton of potential here that the writers and developers have been exploring, and honestly I just wish EVERY character got equal amounts of attention);
League of Legends (Much like Overwatch and DBD, with LOL it's lore galore. A lot of the characters are inherent interesting to people who pay attention to what the develops deliver, and the concept of cooperative multiplayer and mix and match exploration of gameplay mechanics isn't a bad thing, despite being a bit stale. As much as I like LOL tho, the toxic side of the fandom itself is a little too much for me...)

After Monty Python and the Holy Grail eviscerated the self-seriousness of the Arthurian epic but before Shrek added pop songs and fart jokes galore, Rob Reiner and William Goldman’s The Princess Bride was pop culture’s definitive postmodern comic fairytale. Penned by the late, great screenwriter based on his own novel (sorry–his abridged version of the novel by stuffy 19th-century fantasist “S. Morgenstern”) Goldman’s most beloved creation plays to the uninitiated as a deliciously eclectic mixture of loquacious wit, dry self-mockery, and sweetly earnest paean to pure storytelling–long before such tropes became codified cliche in blockbuster genre cinema. Its precarious balance between irony and sincerity has often been copied, but never truly replicated.
We revisit The Princess Bride following William Goldman’s passing.

Fic Speed Dating: Score Card
@spideychellevalor tagged me to do this, thank you always for tagging me in these tag games I really enjoy doing them!!! 💖💖
I haven’t written anywhere near as much as you have but I’ll give it a go
Of all of your works, which do you think is:
The Funniest: idk I think probably ‘Neighbors’ (ao3 version)
The Most Romantic: all of mine are pretty romantic lol but I’d say either of my rom-com AUs by virtue like ‘Friends with Benefits’ (ao3 version) bc of that cliche ending or ‘Two-Night Stand’ (ao3 version) but I think ‘Lessons Learnt’ (ao3 version) is also pretty romantic
The Most Unusual: my fics are all very similar so none of them are really all that unusual
The Scariest: none of mine are scary lol, idk how to write scary/horror elements
The Sexiest: ‘Lessons Learnt’ is literally about how to have good sex
The Saddest: none of them really though an upcoming plot point in ‘Reversal’ (ao3 version) is quite sad/angsty
The Prettiest: idk what this means...I guess just my entire Rom-Com Tropes Galore because it’s fluffy rom-com AUs
Also back in the day I wrote a pair of one-shots or drabbles really for Steve x Kono/McKono (I cannot believe I used to be obsessed with Hawaii Five-0) about each of their favourite parts of the other’s bodies which were pretty cute but I was like 14 when I wrote them- ‘Kono Kalakaua’ and ‘Steve McGarrett’
The Most Exciting: idk I guess ‘Reversal’ just bc it’s playing with the idea of MJ being the superhero instead of Peter
The Happiest: all of them apart from ‘Unmasked’ (I’m still working on it btw, I just had to start afresh after losing all the files)
The Most Realistic: I mean if you put aside the Spider-Man thing and other mcu elements I’d say all of mine are relatively realistic, the most realistic is probably ‘Lessons Learnt’ though bc it’s me writing realistic sex based on real life
The Most Fantastical: none of my fics have any fantastical themes/aspects at all, I just can’t write fantasy (though I do enjoy consuming it)
The Most Complex: ‘Unmasked’ probably- I’m really struggling with re-writing it
The Simplest: everything else
The Closest to What You Wanted It to Be: all of my fics have come out relatively close to what I had planned/envisioned but if I had to choose I’d say ‘Neighbors’ and ‘Two-Night Stand’
I’m gonna tag other fanfic writers that I follow I can think of off the top of my head (I’m really sorry if I keep tagging you in tag memes or you’ve already been tagged in this or you just don’t wanna do it, feel free to ignore): @smilinstar @spiderman-homecomeme @psychicrunawaybouquet-aus
