Title: Rethinking Coaching Requirements: Emphasizing Philosophy and Strategy Over Certifications
In the world of sports coaching, there’s a prevailing emphasis on certifications and qualifications. However, what truly makes a coach effective goes beyond a piece of paper. From my perspective, coaching is about understanding the game, developing effective strategies, and fostering individual growth.
I believe that coaching effectiveness stems from diverse perspectives and experiences, challenging the notion that certifications are the main measure of a coach’s capabilities. Take, for example, a coach who lacks formal certifications but possesses extensive playing experience. This coach has a unique ability to teach tactics based on experience, keen observation, and strategic thinking. Despite not fitting the conventional mold of a coach, their unconventional approach can yield impressive results and help players reach their full potential.
In my opinion, the emphasis on coaching philosophy and strategy over certifications can lead to more successful and cohesive teams. By recognizing the value of diverse backgrounds and experiences, we can elevate coaching standards and ultimately empower players to excel on and off the field.
Additionally, I propose a more flexible approach to coaching licenses. Rather than a rigid system based solely on formal qualifications, I suggest also implementing a knowledge-based test that allows individuals to demonstrate their expertise and place them within the appropriate licensing bracket. This approach would ensure that experienced individuals are not held back by time-gated requirements and can contribute their valuable insights to coaching at their full potential.
If you found this perspective on coaching insightful, consider following me for more discussions on sports, coaching, and personal development.

Transistions
I recently sat with a friend for a few peaceful minutes at our grandsons’ t-ball game. It was classic 4-6-year-old baseball. Bat hits ball after several violent swings with the bat knocking over the tee and it rolls across the infield. None of the dozen or so defenders in the field are paying attention because military helicopters are maneuvering in the airspace over town. Defying all laws of…

you know if we do accept the last epilogue-esque sequence as a sort of dream/wish of ted's and therefore not necessarily canon, very funny if we then simply go "yeah, trent's book is called 'the lasso way' actually. he didn't change that. nope."
#listen on one hand#i think that like#i don't think ted actually changed trent's mind about the title#i think trent changed it because ted asked him to#and like that's especially interesting bc he even made a point of being like#'tell me if you disagree with anything and i'll tell you why you're wrong'#but he respects ted; more than that he likes him and he wants him to like the book--like him#anyone else and trent would have told them to fuck off but ted? ted asking him to change the title? yeah#i think he didn't agree with 'it not being about him'--and not bc of any feelings he may have for ted--but if we accept that him changing#the title is canon then like. he did it because ted asked. nothing more nothing less#maybe he felt he owed it to ted as the subject of the book; maybe he just respected him too much not to#maybe it's partially bc of his feelings; maybe it's because he just couldn't say no to ted#but it's ultimately just. because ted asked him.#and trent respects him; trusts him; cares about him#and that's pretty heartwrenching#but like on the other hand if we say 'no that was ted's wishufl thinking trent definitely went 'sorry ted it's called the lasso way''#also like.... him being like. like quietly not changing it and if ted said something him just. being like#ted. i respect you. i care about you. i trust you. but with all due respect absolutely not#yes it isn't ONLY about you but YOU made this happen. YOU are special and YOU have a place here whether you can stay forever or not#yes it's about the team and the coaches yes you aren't a one man band but ted. TED. you touched lives. you changed lives. and that was YOU.#that was you and your philosophy and your attitude.#you made richmond what it is today. yes the team deserve credit too for the kind of bond they have now but YOU facilitated that#none of the coaches currently here woudl be coaches if not for you. the diamond dogs wouldn't exist. literally every single one#of our friends--OUR friends--wouldn't be where they are and probably wouldn't be as happy#you got through to people over and over again who were hurting and lashing out. to rebecca. to roy. to jamie. to nate. to me.#and you can be humble but there's being humble and there's acting like you don't matter to any of us like you didn't have an impact#like you can just leave without a trace. we don't blame you for leaving--i especially don't--but acting like we won't miss you and like#your time with all of us--our time--meant nothing is more insulting than it is humble because we /love you/#and yes. it was the goddamn lasso way that built this place#this community.

I listened to former MLB pitcher Mike Boddicker on a Kansas City sports radio this week and he said something that activated my coaching radar. With his years of pitching expertise, the host asked him to theorize why the Kansas City Royal’s young pitchers were struggling so much. Thoughtfully, he responded that perhaps too much information was being fed into their heads. He said with so much to…

imagine one-sidedly beefing with a 16 y/o over volleyball because you're projecting 60 years worth of your own insecurity onto him and you're jealous you've never had the skill or mental fortitude to rise above it like he does 💀

expanding on my last post:
i feel like we all just WANTED to be able to love woga guilt-free. they produced, and continue to produce, beautiful gymnasts.
but after bross and then ohashi it was obvious that [valeri's] woga was bad news. then the landi group came onto the scene with kocian and baumann, who, despite being plagued by injuries, seemed overall relatively happy (a subterranean bar lmao) and had a good relationship with laurent and cecile. and they were both at woga since they were wee babes so they really were Wogettes™
and cecile and laurent being the elite group's coaches at woga in valeri's absence almost gave us permission to love woga again. and thats why i think a lot of people are so hesitant to say theyre a problem in any way as coaches
