LOVED:

Crash Landing on You (사랑의 불시착, 2019-20, 16 eps) This drama is my n1! It made me feel thigs and made me cry a lot. I enjoyed the found family aspect and the story was so different so far what I've watched. I was rooting for the couple so much and the fact they're married in real life! Chef kiss!

No gain No love (손해 보기 싫어서, 2024, 12 eps) Every episode was delight. I fell in love with main couple love story. Their chemistry was magnificent. Second couple had more screen time in my opinion, I was cheering for them, but my heart was stolen by Son Hae-yeong and Kim Ji-wook.I enjoyed the family aspect of it too! And it should've had at least 16 episodes, it ended so quickly. Hope they'll make more stories like this one!

Goblin (쓸쓸하고 찬란하神-도깨비, 2016-17, 16 eps.) Drama which made me watched other kdramas! I loved everything about it, the story, characters and the sountrack.

Doom at your service (어느 날 우리 집 현관으로 멸망이 들어왔다, 2021, 16 eps) The story premise was so good. I enjoyed every second of it. Only thing I didn't love that much was second couple, Na Ji-na was acting so childish.

Tomorrow (내일, 2022, 16 eps) every episode was masterpiece, every episode made me cry because the topics which have been shown was sad reality for so many people. The team was excellent, the chemistry between them was so nice. The camera, the script - I love every episode so much. Definitely need to check out webtoon comics.

The Judge from hell (지옥에서 온 판사, 2024, 14 eps) My first show with Park Shin-hye and not last. She was awesome. And the punishments which those monsters got, was satisfying!

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (갯마을 차차차, 2021, 16 eps) I really liked Shin Min-a acting in No gain no love, so of course I watched other drama with her. Enjoyed the story, the chemistry between her and Kim Son-ho, the people from the town. It was such a nice drama!

Welcome to Samdal-ri (웰컴투 삼달리, 2023-24, 16 eps) It had Hometown cha cha cha vibes. The story, sisters bond, friendship and love story in this story was everything. I loved every minute of it.

Fight for my way (쌈 마이웨이, 2017, 16 eps) This drama showed me that when it's done well Friends to lovers trope isn't bad at all.

The Sound of Magic (안나라수마나라, 2022, 6 eps) This was so beautiful drama! JCHW as Magician was brillians as his cast members! The songs were weak except the first song and A curse o Asphalt, those two I can listen to over and over.

Lovely runner (선재 업고 튀어, 2024, 16 eps) I loved every minute of it. Enjoyed good mixture of comedy and drama. Chemistry was fantastic and SunJae was loser boyfriend without dignity if it comes to his bae. In one word PERFECT.

Mr. Plankton (Mr. 플랑크톤, 2024, 10 eps) I didn't have high expectations, but it surprised me! I'm glad that I found out at the beginning how it will end. I could prepare myself for it. The story had original story line and Woo Do-hwan stole the show for me!

Marry My Husband (내 남편과 결혼해줘, 2024, 16 eps) I didn't plan to watch it, because the concept was same as Perfect Marriage Revenge. But it was so much better than PMR. It had revenge with R. I couldn't stop watching after episode 1, that addictive it was. The chemistry between couple was so good, side characters were loveable and the villains were amazing - I hated them with my whole soul, the actors did good job. And Yoo Ji-hyuk became my another favorite husband material.

Healer (힐러, 2014-15, 20 eps) I loved everything about it. I binged in 2 days. Healer and Ajumma hacker - the best combination! No love triangle!

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon (힘쎈 여자 도봉순, 2017, 16 eps) I started it because of Park Bo-yeong, but finished it because of Park Hyung-sik - his character Ahn Min-hyuk stole my heart. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. I binged it how intrigued I was. It had comedy, crime invesitgation what I should wish for more. The acting of main characters were flawless!

Suspicious partner (수상한 파트너, 2017, 20 eps) Combination comedy and suspense was so good. It had good balance. It wasn't the best drama, but I loved it either way. I fell in love with its characters.

Revenant (악귀, 2023, 12 eps) I'm not fan of horror, but I got influenced by some edits. It was pretty addictive and scary. The cast did such a good job. And Kim Tae-ri was excellent. Her performance was flawless. Can't wait to watch other shows and movies with her in it.

Gangnam B-Side (강남 비-사이드, 2024, 8 eps) I watched it because of JCW, I was hesitant at first, because I was afraid it would be too much for me, because of the topic, but it wasn't that brutal I was expected it'd be. The pacing of the story was good, the acting was perfect. I enjoyed the friendship theme. Bibi was so good, it's my first drama with her but definitely not last. Chemistry between her and JCW was pretty natural. The ending was satisfying, everything clicked together.

The Worst Evil (최악의 악, 2023, 12 eps) Let me tell ya, it was perfection. I don't even mind I was anxious every episode, because everything on this drama was just perfect. Acting, story, script, soundtrack.. The ending had to be like that, because the whole time it was coming to that point. I can't even watch fan edits, because they made me emotional, that big impacted this drama has over me.

A Business Proposal (사내 맞선, 2022, 12 eps) My first kdrama ever. I enjoyed about it how feel good this drama was. After watching some Turkish dramas where unnecesary drama was made, it was fresh air for me. I loved the friendship so much! And the family dynamic was nice, too.

Daily Dose of Sunshine (정신병동에도 아침이 와요, 2023, 12 eps) Park Bo-yeong was amazing. The story is one of those which everyone should watch once in their lifetime. The story is opening topics about mental illnesses and how big stigma it still is around people. Honestly, only thing I didn't like was the romance there, because it wasn't that necessary for the story itself.

If You Wish Upon Me (당신의 소원을 말하면, 2022, 16 eps) I went into this show blindly. I mainly picked it because of JCW. I didn't know anything about the story.After first episode I knew I will love it and also that every episode will be pretty emotional journey. I enjoyed the plot so much. I like that it's story about people who has their struggles, but they gather to help grant wishes of dying patients. It was so touching.What I love the most about this show is the journey of main character Yoon Kyeo Re. From not trusting anyone, because everyone in his life let him down, to embracing his true self and his new found family! I'm sucker for found family trope and this show served it so amazingly.I loved how the story is wrapped exactly how it begins. The circle of new beginning are repeating.What I didn't like was how was handled the fixation of Ha Joon Kyung on Yoon Kyeo Re. It wasn't satisfying at all.Overall very well done show which made you cry, but the acting and story is so good, so it's totally fine. I just wish the show to be longer, because I didn't want to say goodbye to the characters! They grew on me so much.

Melting me softly (날 녹여주오, 2019, 16 eps.) I had a really good time. When I'm thinking about it now, it wasn't the most perfect thing I've seen, it had its faults and loopholes, but you know what I don't care, because I was enjoying every minute when I was watching it. The comedy, soundtrack and the acting! JCW just know how made you cry or fell in love. Plus his looks with glasses were death to me, he's just that good looking in anything he wears, I guess. Also Won Ji ah was pretty good too, love her portrayal of Ko Mi ra who was a really awesome character.

Happiness (해피니스, 2021, 12 eps) I just say that everyone who was praising this show was right. It was so good! I loved (even though it irritated me, but in reality it would happended) how it showed how would people reacted in some pandemic moment. How people becomes selfish and dangerous. The main couple had stunning chemistry, so natural! And must say I enjoyed strong FL.

Melo movie (멜로 무비, 2025, 10 eps) Park Bo Young was my urge to watch it, because I just love her and so far what I've seen with her in it was so good! And this one wasn't exception. I was having fun for the start, just beware it's not only romcom (I thought it is) and then it tore me out without notice. Enjoyed every story line what was there. Don't get people who was unsatisfied with second couple ending, because it was beautifully realistic! Also, I'm glad I finally saw Choi Woo Shik in action, because after this show I want to watch other stuff with him! Loved his chaotic, goofy nature.

Extraordinary you (어쩌다 발견한 하루, 2019, 32eps) Really interesting concept, with good acting. Kim Hye Yoon is my new favorite actress, she's so good. Premise of being in the comics story and being only extra character and trying to overcoming was pretty nice. Loved the friendship between Eun Dan O and Lee Do Hwa, they were so funny! Chemistry between KHY and Rowoon was chemistriyng. Only thing I didn't like and it's not drama relating, but the fact that many peple was sipping over Baek Gyeong okay totally understand some reasoning, but defending his "good" behavior which was nonexistent most of the times and shipping him with Dan O, which wouldn't be problem for me if he would get some redemption, but he treated her so badly even after regaining his conscious. He doesn't care about her feelings and fact he literally try to hide under words,it's how it should be because of writer. Thank god he realized his doing in the end, but that wasn't enough for me to liked him and try justify his actions, because it wasn't possible, big walking red flag.

Destined with you (이 연애는 불가항력, 2023, 16 eps) THIS. I started it because of Rowoon and ended up loving it for the main couple! Jo Bo Ah and Rowoon have so insane chemistry. Honestly it wasn't perfect drama. But I laughed so many times and just Jang Shin Yu being sick love puppy all the time! He just can do dork in love and serious lawyer at the same time, he's that talented. And there were moments when acting of Rowoon and Jo Bo Ah made me cried at moments too! Fantastic! And this show had hot moment, which is one of my favorite!

Little women (작은 아씨들, 2022, 12 eps) This was so good. So thrilling, made me want to watch another and another episode. Why the chemistry is always so magnificent in non romantic genre, it's a crime. The acting was phenomenal. Only thing I didn't enjoy most of the time is behavior of the youngest sister.

Dear Hongrang (탄금: 금을 삼키다, 2025, 11eps) First of all who came up with 11 episodes? It's odd number and in the end that one episode would be perfectly fine, it felt a little rushed in the end. I must say I was sceptical the trailer didn't interested me, but Bo Ah was there....First episode nothing special I was thinking about quitting, but I'm glad I stayed, after second episode it got better. I can't say it was masterpiece or something close to it. But the soundtrack and fight scenes were so good. The love story was too weird for too long, who watched it, they know what I'm referring to. Anyway chemistry was nice. The story was decent, got me hooked until the end. Mine a little longer opinion with spoilers is in there

Love your enemy (사랑은 외나무다리에서, 2024, 12 eps) I enjoyed it a lot, but one particular redemption part - I didn't agree with it, I don't think, that person deserve to be forgiven. As romcom I enjoyed it a lot. Loved the comedy. The chemistry was there, and totally agree with people about the younger versions steal the show! I guess, they had more angst, I don't know. Redemption person is written here why I don't think they deserve that.

Love scout (인사하는 사이, 2025, 12 eps) This was such beautiful mature romance story I've seen for a such a long time! Yoo Eun Ho is the greenest ML! I'm glad the story doesn't have unnecessarily drama, which sometimes happens and I hate it. It had moments I didn't love, but it wasn't something major, just my problems. If you want something when the roles are switched - F CEO and M assistant. Grumpy x Sunshine type of story with mature communication - THIS IS IT!

The Lab potato (2025,감자연구소, 12 eps) Must say I was intrigued from episode 1. It has Brewing love vibes, but it was slightly better, I mean I was hooked from very beginning. If you want something goofy, with supportive collegues and BFF who is into smut, with pretty hot ML. Both have their flaws, but chemistry is nice. Go for it!

Brewing love (취하는 로맨스, 2024, 12 eps) I'm glad I didn't stop watching after first episode, because I didn't like that episode a lot, but it got better! I enjoyed the world of making beer and fact that ML was sensitive character, who can feel how someone is feeling, very new what I've seen so far. I also love about the drama the meaningful conversations and no love triangle, and just good time without frustration of miscommunication.

Undercover High School (언더커버하이스쿨, 2025, 12 eps) Loved the mix of genre such as comedy, action etc. Enjoyed the dynamic between main protagonists, loved smartness of FL.

Queen Woo (우씨왕후, 2024, 8 eps) My first historical kdrama. I was shocked how many explicit scenes there were. But I enjoyed the strong female protagonist! The cast was so good, the costumes were stunning. Definitely not disappointed, only thing I was sad about was that JCW's character dies at the beginning. I loved their love story they really loved each other so much.

Shooting Stars (별똥별, 2022, 16 eps) I got crush on Kim Young-dae after watching No gan no love. Unfortunately I didn't love this drama, but I had a really good time. I enjoy the story setting, it shows how messed up is the entertainment industry in South Korea. The comedy was so good. I wasn't satisfied with how some plots were handled in the end. Overall it was fun drama!

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (이상한 변호사 우영우, 2022, 16 eps (S1)) I enjoyed every case. Joon-ho is such a green forest!

Backstreet Rookie (편의점 샛별이, 2020, 16 eps) First episode wasn't good, the problematic elements shocked me, but I give it a try, because of JCW and after second episode I was hooked. Enjoyed the comedy and serious topics which was added. I wasn't fan the romance though, it took them a long time than ML and his gf broke up, which I was frustrating with the gf behavior, I was sorry for her at the beginning, but I got mad at her soon after that. She was such a toxic victim acting person. The whole relationship was mostly about her and fact she was feeling embarrassed when she was with him!? And after break up, which she broke up with him and in bad way...she started chased him again! I was done with her acting. And another person annoyed me that much, which wasn't even punished is younger sister of FL. LIke what a brat. The chemistry was there, but I didn't feel the love. I hope they'd be in another drama together!

Love next door (엄마 친구 아들, 2024, 16 eps) I enjoyed chemistry between charcters and also trope friends into lovers, which was executed so nicely. Enjoyed important messages in it, BUT a few last episodes was dragging to me. I guess, I lost interest in the end. But I was so rooting for second couple, so I needed to finish it. This gonna be my first kdrama where I prefer second couple more.

Lovestrunk  in the city (도시남녀의 사랑법, 2020-21, 17 eps) It had very interesting concept. And was suprised that episodes were short like 30 mins. What I loved the most about this show was friendship of Lee Eun-oh, Suh Rin-i and Kang Geon. Give me supportive friends and I will love it! Next thing is spoilers so what I didn't get was 2 months fling which he did like they knew each other for longer period time. Understand, that it can happended, but he was such a loser boyfriend. I was embarrassed for him for many times. But I loved how caring he was...The ending wasn't satisfying at all. It felt like there gonna be season 2, but I doubt it.

When the phone rings (지금 거신 전화는, 2024-25, 12 eps) It had very good start. I love the chemistry ad the acting. But the finale ruined it for me. Honestly, I don't mind the war-zone plot, I was annoyed with Hee joo decision to get kidnapped in that zone to find her husband. Like girl you could've been killed. What were you thinking?

Cinderella at 2 am (새벽 2시의 신데렐라, 2024, 10 eps) beginning started so high and it went down half way through the show, which was a shame. This is my second noona show (found out there's a name for older woman, younger man show recently) Moon Sang-min was such a cutie in the show. Most people prefer second couple and I don't blame them, but I love main couple, they were such cute idiots and I was there for it. But if I should choose only 1 drama with noona theme...No gain No love did it better in whole picture (characters, story itself).

Wedding Impossible (웨딩 임파서블, 2024, 12 eps) I had the same problem as with Cinderella at 2 am, it had a really good beginning but in the halfway it got a little dragged. Especially didn't enjoy what they did Dohan's story, I was picked this show up especially with the premise FL helps her friend and becomes his fake bride because he's gay. This theme wasn't handle very good. I started it because of Moon Sang-min and stayed because of him, because hist character Lee Ji-han was overdramatic and I was here for it! I was also in awe with FL Na Ah Jung - I love abour her she doesn't give a damn and tells you what she thinks!

My roommate is a Gumiho (2021, 간 떨어지는 동거, 16 eps) Well, I was loving it and then I wasn't. After episode 10, it didn't work. I'd prefer if it was 12-episode drama, because story got dragged too much, it took me quite some time to finish it. Loved FL, she was cool. The chemistry was also nice, but I didn't feel the romantic bond, especially how they addressed one another, very formal, that didn't help. Comedy was nice, story too, but the finale wasn't great. Also didn't like second ML.

Descendants of the sun (2016, 태양의 후예, 16 eps) First episodes were nice, but I got crisis in half way through. Both FLs were annoying sometimes. Enjoyed the chemistry though.

Empress Ki (기황후, 2013-14, 51 eps) The beginning was nice, but I was dying half way through. I was watching it because of JCW, but his character was so annoying and childish and I know that if that character was played by different actor I would loath him so much. The biggest red flag ever. I loved the main heroine though, she was clever and strong. Like yeah she was good at everything but I don't mind, I just loved her and she deserved so much more... The romance was I don't know... the chemistry was there but I didn't feel it like it¨s some epic love. Tal Tal was side character which stole my heart, his tactic mind and fact he started having respect towards Ki through time, they were besties for me. Even though I wasn't that big fan of the show like most of the people, the characters have grown on me and the finale destroyed me big time. The soundtrack was so nice!

Perfect Marriage Revenge (완벽한 결혼의 정석 , 2023, 12 eps.) It had so much potential, but it didn't live up to it. I enjoyed ML, he was another green forest. But I was expecting a little more satisfying revenge from FL. Nervertheless it was solid drama, I like it.

Link: Eat, Love, Die (링크: 먹고 사랑하라, 죽이게, 2022, 16 eps) Interesting plot, but that slow pacing of the story was killing me. I'd prefer 12 eps, because it'd be enough. I enjoyed the main characters, plus FL's mom and grandma who were stealer of the show how hillarious they were. The characters were main reason I finished it.

The K2 (더 케이투, 2016, 16 eps) Ji Chang-wook has become my favorite actor. I love how he can play anything. And the action is so good when he's there. I was excited after a few episodes in, the action, political schemes. But in the end only Ji Chang wook and Song Jun-a were saving this show. Her villain character Choi Yoo-jin was magnificent and interesting persona. Thanks to them I wanted to finish it and I did!

My sweet mobster (놀아주는 여자, 2024, 16 eps) I enjoyed the idea of the show. Loved the guys and their boss. But it was dragging a bit in the end. It took me a while to finish it because of it.

Family Matters (가족계획, 2024, 6 eps) It was good to see Bae Doona again after so long. The story was interesting. Hope they are planning second season, because it definitely deserves it.

The Trunk (트렁크, 2024, 8 eps) The plot was very confusing at first, it took me 2 episode to understand it. Pacing was very slow and if there wouldn't be main couple I'd just give up, but I enjoy them. Their chemistry was natural and fact, they healed each other at some point!

Family by choice (조립식 가족, 2024, 16 eps) I must say I was pleasantly suprised how well they did the remake of Go ahead. The essense of that show was there, but it made it more its own show.

Face Me (페이스 미, 2024, 12 eps) Beginning was promising, but it flopped in half way. I can't blame cast too much, because main issue was script, they couldn't do better job because of it. I was missing development of characters and the fact the killer was obvious from very beginning wasn't cool, I love being surprised.

When the topic of sharing dorms had sparked among the students, you immediately thought of someone you’d both like to keep your eye on and get to know better: Damon Maitsu, whose eyes flickered across the hallway with annoyance and disapproval, like he was silently judging everyone there.  

Carefully, you approached him. He looked up to face you, his eyes narrowing. “What do you want?” he asked, his tone dripping with irritation.

“I think we should dorm together,” you stated, crossing your arms. “We’ll both be much safer, and have alibis for the night.”

Damon shifted his gaze down, his expression unreadable, but you could see the shift once he’d understood the practical reasoning behind sharing a dorm, combined with the fact he had no one else to partner with.

“...Fine. I’d rather deal with someone who can handle themselves, unlike…” He didn’t need to continue for you to know exactly who he was talking about. “Haha… glad we’re on the same page.” you laughed.  

As the two of you settled into Damon’s dorm, the room was silent other than the sounds of you two settling your things. Of course, Damon was the first to break it, turning to look you in the eye.

“Hey, don’t…jinx this, or anything.” he spoke firmly, but there was the smallest hint of anxiety in his voice. “I won’t, Damon, I promise. This is the best decision for both of us” you assured. He sighed, but didn’t argue any further, and as the silence of the room crept back up once more, you allowed yourself a small smile you knew he wouldn’t see.

Diana Venicia

“Hii!” You opened your door, and were met with Diana Venicia standing in front of you with her usual cheery smile. “So, I was wondering…don’t you think it would be good to dorm together for the night? I promise it’ll make things less scary for both of us…”

Truthfully, her presence seemed quite out of place in the morbid situation you were trapped in, but there was something about it that made you feel at ease. You paused to think, but eventually accepted. “...Alright. Wouldn’t hurt to be as safe as possible.”

“Awesome!” she clasped her hands together, her casualty almost contagious.

When the two of you finally got settled in Diana’s dorm, you watched as she unpacked her makeup bag that she always carried with her, laying its contents out neatly on the desk. 

“Sorry, I have to make sure all my supplies stay in perfect condition. You never know when someone might need to use makeup!” she half-joked. You weren’t sure what she was implying by that, but you brushed it off.

Diana sat on the bed, looking up at the ceiling with slight worry on her face.  “You know…” she began, “this whole situation… it’s terrifying. I won’t lie about that. But I really do believe we’ll all make it out of here, together.” The sincerity in her voice caught you off guard. “You really think so?” you asked. 

She turned to you, her expression a bit lighter this time. “Yeah! And if I ever start to lose hope, I’ll just remind myself I’ve got you, right?” You grinned back at her. “Right. You have me, Diana.” “Good,” she said, settling back against the headboard. “I knew I could count on you.” You couldn’t help but feel grateful for her, too.

Wenona

Wenona wasn’t the most friendly or approachable person, but she was logical and composed. If anything, sharing a dorm with her meant ensuring both of your safeties. You took a breath and made your way over to her. “Wenona?”

She noticed you immediately, her icy eyes locking with yours as you approached. “Let me guess, you want to be a dorm pair?” she assumed smugly. “Tell me, what exactly will you bring to the table? If you think I’ll tolerate dead weight, you’re quite mistaken.”  

You sighed, knowing you would need to match her energy if you wanted to convince her. “I’m here to survive, like you. Sharing a dorm will make sure both of us are safe and have alibis. I won’t get in your way, I promise.” 

Her smug grin faded, and you could almost see the gears turning in her head. “Hm…I suppose partnering with someone who shares my priorities is… preferable to one of these wrecks." She gestured vaguely at the more panicked students.

“Great!” you managed to keep your composure, but you were extremely grateful for her acceptance. Wenona then stated in a challenging manner, “But don’t mistake this for anything more than a practical arrangement. I’ll be expecting you to hold up your end of the bargain.”

You chuckled softly. “You always have to negotiate….” The two of you had arrived at Wenona’s dorm when the time came, discussing the situation and whatnot. “When you’ve spent as much time in business as I have, you’ll learn to recognize efficiency and inefficiency when you see them.” Wenona said, her hands in her jacket pockets. You surrendered “Fair enough…”

“Though I must say, pairing with you isn’t entirely insufferable.” she admitted, calm and calculated as ever. You smiled. “Thanks. I’m glad you agreed.”

“This is still solely a matter of convenience.” she firmly said, though there was a lack of her usual attitude in her tone. “Right.” you responded. Despite her words, you could feel there was beginning to be a subtle understanding between the two of you.

Wolfgang Akire

“It’s troubling,” Wolfgang began, “how easily fear can cloud judgment.” He’d been sharing his thoughts regarding his trust among the students non-stop after you’d agreed to share his dorm. You didn’t mind, as you didn’t exactly have something better to be doing at the moment.

“We’ve managed to keep things under control for the past few days, even if there’s been some tension. I guess trust really did outweigh our fear...” you pointed out.

He seemed slightly caught off guard by your sudden agreement. “That’s why I’m glad to be sharing a dorm with you, Mx. Trust is rare in situations like this, but I believe it’s the foundation of survival. If we can see reasoning past our fear, I’ve no doubt we’ll be able to navigate whatever challenges occur in the academy.”

“You really do want to believe in everyone, huh?” you asked, curious.

He smiled faintly, fastening his necktie. “I do. We’ve all been accepted here for our capabilities to improve society. Even in our current circumstances, I believe in the integrity of Ultimate students.”

“That’s right….thank you.” you responded. While you weren’t completely sure whether Wolfgang’s theories were correct, you couldn't deny to yourself that could use some optimism in this time.

The morning sun cast a golden glow over the streets of Los Angeles as you and Athena Grant patrolled the streets in the patrol car. It was one of those rare days when the weather was perfect and the city seemed surprisingly quiet. Athena enjoyed the peace and your company. You had known each other for years and had been through countless missions together, which had led to a very deep friendship and tacit understanding between you.

"So, y/n," Athena began as they drove through the streets and she tapped the steering wheel to the soft melody of the radio. "Do you have any plans for the weekend yet?"

You laughed quietly and glanced at her sideways, your head leaning on your hand that was placed by the window. "Nothing concrete yet. I'm thinking about finally going to the cinema again. There's that new Marvel film and I thought I'd take Harry and May with me?"

Athena grinned. "But only if you take me with you? You know I can never say no to a nice day with the kids and you."

"Perfect, then that's a plan. I heard this movie is excellent and the animations are supposed to be awesome!" you nodded contentedly, your body shaking in the passenger seat with excitement. Athena could only shake her head, you were a total nerd when it came to the Marvel universe and even though she knew absolutely nothing about it, she loved hearing you talk about it.

The conversations between you flowed easily and effortlessly, switching from work to personal anecdotes and back. You teased each other and laughed about shared memories. Despite the many years in the service, you were still able to make Athena laugh and she appreciated your company more than she wanted to admit.

"Okay, last question," you said as you stopped at a traffic light, adjusting your sunglasses. "If you weren't a cop, what would you be doing?"

Athena thought for a moment and then answered casually, her gaze strictly focused on the traffic. "I'd probably open a café. I love coffee and I like helping people, so that would be the perfect combination."

You laughed out loud. "That honestly sounds like a dream. I would definitely be your regular customer." you said and shortly afterwards Athena drove the car into a parking lane in front of a bank. "I have to go in for a moment to sort out something personal. Are you coming with me?"

You nodded and got out of the car. You went into the bank together, where Athena went to the counter to take care of her affairs. You waited nearby and let your gaze wander around the banks. It seemed to be a completely normal morning - customers standing in line, employees working behind the counters and a general business atmosphere.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, three masked men burst into the bank, armed with assault weapons. A shrill scream broke the silence as one of the men fired the gun into the air. "Nobody move! This is a robbery!" one of the masked men yelled.

Athena exchanged a quick look with you and felt her body immediately tense as her training and experience took over. She knew this was an extremely dangerous situation and any wrong move could have disastrous consequences.

"Everyone on the floor!" one of the robbers ordered as the other two began to check the customers and employees.

You both obeyed and slowly lowered yourselves to the floor, your eyes always wandering between you and the robbers. Athena knew she would need a plan to defuse this situation, but for now you had to stay calm and wait for your chance.

One of the robbers went from person to person, collecting cell phones and carefully making sure that no one tried to set off an alarm or call the police. So far they hadn't noticed that two police officers were already in the bank. Athena watched the main man closely and noticed that he was nervous. His hands were shaking slightly and his chest was rising and falling quickly.

You, who had crawled towards Athena unnoticed, whispered almost imperceptibly. "We have to find a way to get the situation under control."

Athena nodded almost imperceptibly. "Wait for my instructions. We can't rush anything." she said and the minutes seemed to stretch on endlessly as the robbers continued to gain control of the bank. One of the men went to the vault while the other two kept an eye on the customers.

Athena felt her heart beating faster, but she forced herself to stay calm. She knew that every movement, every word could be decisive now. Her eyes wandered around the bank, looking for a possible opportunity to overpower the robbers.

"Hey, boss!" one of the robbers suddenly shouted, waiting until he got the larger man's attention before pointing the gun at Athena. "We have cops in the bank."

Athena remained calm as she slowly rose to her feet, her hands above her head. "Stay calm," Athena said in a firm and controlled voice.

The situation became chaotic in a matter of seconds. The robber, nervous and obviously mentally distressed, pulled a woman to her feet, a gun pointed strictly at her head while he screamed wildly. "No tricks, got it? You will shut up and try nothing, or you will be the first to lose your life. I'm not afraid of shooting fucking cops."

"Release the hostage and we can solve this peacefully," she spoke carefully and in a calm tone, but the robber didn't understand and continued to shout at her. "You don't understand! Nobody understands! I have nothing left to lose!"

The tension rose as the robber looked around wildly. Athena saw the gun start to shake in his sweaty hands and knew that the situation could escalate at any time and suddenly, the gun was no longer aimed at the woman, but directly at her.

You reacted instinctively. Without hesitation, you pushed yourself up from the ground and threw yourself in front of Athena. There was a loud bang - a shot had been fired. Then another shot, and for a moment time seemed to stand still. You felt the stabbing pain as the bullet hit you and you fell to the ground.

Athena's heart skipped a beat and she had to act quickly. When the robber was inattentive for a brief moment, Athena took the opportunity and ripped the gun from his hand. A fierce fight broke out while everyone else took cover. She managed to quickly overpower and arrest her opponent. You had shot the other in the shoulder from your position on the ground to give your partner cover.

When the two were handcuffed, Athena turned to the frightened bank customers and employees. "Reinforcements will be here soon. Everything will be fine. Please stay calm." she said and turned back to you. "Y/n!" she whispered as she knelt down. Blood seeped through your uniform and she knew it was serious. You weren't wearing a protective vest and the wounds on your upper and lower body looked serious.

While Athena desperately tried to stop the blood flow, the SWAT team ran in and overpowered the last robber, who went back into the main room of the bank. "Stay with me, y/n. You can't give up now."

You smiled weakly, your eyes filled with pain as you tried to take short breaths. "I... won't... 'thena."

Paramedics rushed in behind the SWAT team and began treating you. Athena didn't leave your side, her hands pressed tightly to your wounds as she continued to try to stop the blood loss. "We need to get her to the hospital immediately." one of the paramedics said as they placed you on a stretcher.

Athena followed the stretcher out and got into the ambulance. Her mind was racing and she couldn't hold back the tears. "Please, y/n, hold on."

The ambulance sped through the streets of Los Angeles, its sirens blaring and its lights flashing in frantic patterns. Athena held your hand tightly, her eyes full of worry and fear. Blood seeped through her fingers and dried on the sleeves of her police jacket. "Hold on, y/n," she whispered again, her voice shaking with emotion. "You can't give up now. Not after everything we've been through."

You weakly opened your eyes, briefly coming back from unconsciousness. "I'll try, Athena. For you."

When you reached the hospital, you were immediately greeted by a team of doctors and nurses and taken to an operating room. Athena was left alone in the lobby, hands smeared with your blood and shaking. All she could do was pray and hope that you would make it.

Hours passed in slow motion. Athena sat in a sterile waiting room, her thoughts racing. Memories of missions together, of conversations and of moments when you had saved her life flooded her mind. She couldn't imagine life without you. Not now, not ever.

Hours later, a doctor finally made his way to her. "She's stable," he said briefly, disinfecting his hands. "It was close. The bullet missed some important organs and arteries, but she lost a lot of blood. She'll make it, but it will take a while until she's fully recovered."

Tears of relief streamed down Athena's face. She knew she had almost lost someone who meant more to her than she ever wanted to admit. "Thank you," she whispered, unable to find more words. "Thank you for saving her."

The next few days were a test of patience and hope for Athena. She visited you regularly in the hospital, sat by your bed and held your hand. She spoke to you, even though you were often too weak to answer. But she knew you heard her, and that gave her strength.

One afternoon, when the sun shone warmly through the window of the hospital room, you awoke from a deep sleep. Athena sat by your side, quietly reading from a comic that Harry had brought for you. When she noticed that you were awake, she put the comic aside and smiled.

"Hey, you," she said gently. "How are you feeling?"

"Better now that you're here." You blinked and smiled weakly. Athena felt her heart beating faster. She had thought a lot over the last few days and had come to an important realization. She could no longer hide her feelings. It was time to tell you the truth.

"Y/n.." she began, her voice anxious and not what you were used to. "I have to tell you something. Something I've been feeling for a long time, but never had the courage to say it."

You looked at her carefully, your eyes full of curiosity and affection. "What is it, Athena?"

She took a deep breath and squeezed your hand tighter. "I... I love you, y/n. I always have, but I never admitted it to myself. But when I thought I might lose you, I realized how much you really mean to me. You are not only my best friend and partner, you are the person I can't imagine my life without."

Tears came to your eyes and you smiled. "Athena, I love you too. For so long. But I was always afraid that you wouldn't feel the same. That I could ruin our friendship."

Athena leaned forward and kissed your forehead gently. "Our friendship is strong enough to survive anything. And I'm ready to take a new path with you. Together."

Your smile grew wider and you pulled Athena closer to you with all your strength. "Then let's walk this path together, 'thena. No matter what happens, we will get through it together."

1. Sirens

This song is probably the mechanisms' least "centered" song. It doesn't mention any characters, it has no narration, and out of context it just sounds like A Song that you might hear on the radio. Sirens is to the mechanisms as you're the one that I want is to grease, you know?

2. Trial by song

THIS one. It's in the same category to me as Sirens; you can listen to it by itself and not suspect much. Unlike Sirens which can be completely separated and still make sense, this one is more like a whole new world from Aladdin. There are parts that make it obvious that it's from a larger whole, but if you just so happen to catch the "safe" parts you won't suspect much.

3. Empty trail

This is no offense to Dr. La Cognizzi, but sometimes when she sings it's hard to make out what she's saying, which works in her favor in these circumstances. It sounds country/rock, which help it blend in with some dad rock songs. If I remember correctly, the melody was actually taken from a Led Zeppelin song, so if you aren't paying attention to what's ACTUALLY being said you can get away with claiming it's a cover.

4. Ties that bind

Although this one does mention many plot points, many fans have stated that they had no idea what the fuck was being said until the have looked for the lyrics (myself included) this, combined with it's jazzy rythm, make it able to blend in with other songs, similarly to empty trail

5. Odin

The most "normal" song out of the entirety of The Bifrost Incident. This song made it to the top five because it has similarities with Roam by the B-52's, but had points deducted due to it clearly being about an awesome space train

6. Lost in the cosmos

This might just be personal opinion, but it sounds like a church song. You can pull off the effect of it being about earth Jesus and not space robot Jesus if you have particularly bad quality speakers and a busy store w/lots of noise. Again, the lyrics kinda give it away as to not being entirely main stream

7. Stranger

Look it's a banger, ok? Many of the lyrics could be taken as just being metaphors, but I feel like you have to squint to "see" it. Pay too much attention and shit gets a little weird. Also, points deducted because it's two men singing together and not a man and a woman, which throws a wrench into the works. At kohl's it might raise some eyebrows but in like hot topic it'll blend in a little better

8. Redeath

You would think a song about a sphoenix (space phoenix) would be lower on the list but you'd be wrong. It's a really pretty song with a good original melody, and it's something that can be drowned out by a particularly rowdy crowd. Like Stranger, it would blend in better at a hot topic than at kohl's, but only slightly.

9. Elysian Fields

The melody in Elysian Fields is taken directly from the song wayfaring stranger, which has been coverd by Jonny Cash, Ed Sheeran, Poor Man's Poison, and The Longest Johns, AS WELL HAS having been featured in the movie 1917 and in the video game The Last of Us II, which make it very recognizable. Because of this recognizability, people who know the original song may be caught off guard by hearing it in a Walmart with completely different lyrics. It was originally in 7th place, but the popularity of the original takes off many points

10. Once and future king

It's a banger, don't get me wrong, but it also very heavily and clearly mentions plot points from the album, which itself is heavily base on Aurtharian mythology; something very well known in the western world (also the names are not common at all and most haven't been in fashion in centuries). In a crowded, busy space with not very good quality speakers it could potentially blend in, but one or two names might sneak out. The only reason it's on the list is because of the instrumental outro, which sounds normal enough

You know what concept doesn’t get explored enough in Dreamling fic? Dream teaching Hob how to read. Like, I’ve seen one or two off mentions of it in canon adjacent fic, but nothing that really gives focus to that idea, y’know? And while I think it would be fun in canon, I’m gonna go au real quick.

So Hob as one of those kids unfortunately left behind. Probably a combination of living in poverty and his undiagnosed adhd. And he’s definitely way too embarrassed by this to actually ask anyone to teach him. So now he’s an adult who doesn’t know much more than his own name and his numbers. And while that probably wouldn’t be enough for most people to get by, what Hob DOES have are people skills. His ability to charm people and talk around them let’s him get through life well enough.

Then there’s Dream, mister wet cat himself. If he’s not an Author™️ then he’s definitely a voracious reader. But he has a personality of a damp paper bag. Like, even he has to admit his lack of social skills is actively hindering his life and relationships at this point. Probably add some autism for ✨flavor✨

But Dream does have moments where he’s too observant for his own good. Which is how he clocks that Hob avoids reading like the plague. (I’m envisioning Hob as a bartender at the pub Dream goes to to try and learn human behavior. But idk if he could avoid reading with that job.)

So Dream corners Hob and proposes a trade off: Dream will teach him how to read and Hob will teach him some social skills. Once Hob realizes he’s not being threatened (seriously, Dream really sucks at this talking to people thing) he hesitantly agrees. At least it’s less embarrassing if Dream also needs to be taught something? And it would be rather helpful…

Obviously during the course of their lessons they fall in love 🥰

This means so much to me!!!! I love it. The idea of Hob hiding the fact that he can't read is so heartbreaking but actually so real and its way more common than people imagine.

I also love the idea of Hob + Dream = One Normal Functioning Adult. That's my favourite thing, when they're each other's missing puzzle piece <3

I figure that Hob might have picked up a few words from around the environment of the bar. Like, each tap has a label on and he knows exactly which is which and he can technically read "Guiness" and "Wherry" and a few others, but they're not the most useful words. Anyways, Dream gets the idea that he'll keep using things around the pub to teach Hob to read: menus, newspapers, posters for old gigs, crisp packets. It's a good way for Hob to build confidence before Dream presents him with an actual book.

And similarly Hob uses the bar as a place to teach Dream about social skills. He coaches him through identifying body language and expressions, quizzing Dream on how he thought each customer might be feeling. Then he encourages three way conversations between him, Dream and regular customers. He gives Dream topics to focus on and gives him safe ways to get out of an interaction that he's not vibing with.

By the time Hob stumbles his way through his first novel, Dream is able to talk to a stranger about the weather without any issues. And they're both mutually crushing on each other so hard!! It only seems fitting that the pub which has been such a cornerstone for their friendship and some pretty awesome personal milestones, is also the place where they have their first date.

Hob reads love sonnets to Dream in a hushed undertone. And it's like the whole building sighs happily at the sights of them together <3

Interesting Trends and Voices in the Silmarillion Fandom

Although I have been a lover of Tolkien since the earliest days of my youth and have been a Tolkien Scholar for over a decade, I have not made too many forays into the Silm fandom other than when I was younger and more recently a few years ago. Thus, I was rather surprised by the trends that seem to be mainstays of the Fandom and which ones I've seen big shifts in. I'll mention them briefly, but please note, although I may share differences of opinion regarding these characters or themes, we all share a deep love of the source material and that makes us fellow Enthusiasts. Whatever our differences, we have more in common with what we love than that which we do not.

With that said,

A "newer" trend I've noticed is the number of Fëanorian apologists, which is rather surprising, especially given their vocality. Some of the more common trends in this vein:

~A general indifference towards Fingolfin apart from a "if he had been through what Fëanor had, he would have been that way too" kind of approach, etc.

~All of Fëanor's sons (but especially Maedhros) are often given the best possible excuse for every action and bad decision. Others like Thingol or Elwing, less so.

~Finarfin and his children are generally regarded as boring, except for Galadriel who is either, loved as being awesome, wild, and wise or slightly disliked for having ill-opinions of Fëanor or some combination of the two.

~Fingolfin's line is seen as either goody-two-shoes or full of themselves, with the exception of Fingon who is close friends with Maedhros.

~The Valar are often illustrated to be antagonists, especially when in opposition to the Fëanorians.

~In the same light, I've seen a few posts that portray Luthien as being somehow problematic, seemingly to balance out the negative Fëanorian interactions she endures.

~One of the more sad effects of this apologist line of thinking is the Denegration of Elrond and Elros' parents. In order for Maedhros and Maglor to be considered "good" their actual parents are seen as "bad" despite little evidence of that being the case.

~ It seems Fëanor and sons have become the golden child of the Silm fandom, a spot once reserved for Sauron and Morgoth, if memory serves.

NOTES:

These are all fairly intriguing lines of discourse and I understand that they are tied up in and often heavily influenced by the fan-fictions and fannons. Still, it does make me wonder, with how vocal the Fëanorians are (especially on tumblr), how many Nolofinweans are in the Fandom? How many fans of Finarfin's cohort (or as one Tumblr user once called them), the blondes?

Some older trends that continue:

~Thingol still sucks (at least by common thought). It is interesting that despite all of the love of the Noldorin lines given their proclivity towards violence and bad decisions, the fandom still has not been able to lend some compassion towards the reigning Sindarin Monarch.

~Celeborn somehow ending up with Galadriel is still a big mystery (I do love this one).

~Sauron is still seen as Morgoth's boyfriend/lover/etc.

~The Valar are antagonists (before this was due to the Sauron/Morgoth apologists, and now it seems to stem more from a Fëanorian view)

~Turin and Beleg are still a ship (I am pleased).

~Halls of Mandos Reunions (always a classic).

~Gimli/Legolas ship.

Some older trends I don't see as much:

~Fingolfin/Fëanor ship (I'm not upset that this one is scarce. Even in Fantasy, incest isn't my thing).

~Fingon/Maedhros ship (see above note)

~Celebrimbor is the greatest elf of all time.

~Melkor/Manwe/Varda and/or Sauron love triangles.

I'm curious to see what others think of these trends. I'll be the first to admit, I have always had a fondness for the Nolofinweans, but it is interesting to see the growth of the Fëanorian fans and how quickly their voice has grown into one of the primary topics of fandom discourse (which is good, I love the discussions!).

New poly ship. Big Mac and Shining Armor and Prince Blueblood.

Why? Mainly because I read a few Big Mac x Shining fics, like two or three maybe about Shining x Blueblood and finally like one or two about Big Mac x Blueblood. And they were all cool

No one stopped me because I don't know anyone who reads BL/MLM/gay MLP fanfics so no one stopped me from mixing these three ships and creating a poly ship.

I like a lot of Shining ships, like Sombra x Shining? Yes I like that one, Cadance x Shining? Like obviously yes, Shining x Chrysalis? I prefer Cadance x Chrysalis or the three of them but yes, Shining x Sunburst? Yeah why not I once read a cute fic about them, Shining x Flash? Yes, why not? I've read some very cute and fluffy, funny fics about them so yes.

Once (like yesterday or two days ago idk) I read a really nice one of Cadance x Shining x Flash, and another that were Cadance x Shining x Sunburst.

You can tell I'm not a big fan of Shining's straight ships? He's like bi but Cadance and stallions to me. In an alternative universe maybe just gay with Cadance as his bestie.

But it's logical that the Princess of Love is poly and therefore Shining.

But back to the original topic from which I clearly strayed a lot.

Sup! There's this thing in the Sonic 3 soundtrack that keeps going around in my brain and it kind of based an entire theory on two references to Sonic CD.

Not only that, when you combine it with the last one that's in the post-credits, time travel comes up.

Along with Amy's appearance, I theorize that it's a foreshadowing that she could be on her own side mission throughout Sonic 3 (my personal guess being that she's from Little Planet and is fighting the Metal Army in the long run and maybe has involvement with the Timea Stones).

Some Hiyuki (and Chiyuki) Thoughts

Hello, dear void. Let's yap about Best Girl for a bit.

Just two badasses in one of the coolest spreads in the series so far.

I've had a lot of Hiyuki and Chiyuki topics bubbling around in my sad excuse for a brain for a while now and they kind of reached boiling point with the latest Kagurabachi WSJ cover (Issue 01, 2025). There's some good and bad and quite a lot of neutral so once again I'm just writing things down to make sense of what's going on in my head. I've got stuff to say about Hiyuki as a character and her most popular ship pairing, "Chiyuki" (Chihiro/Hiyuki).

Note: I started drafting this back in December of 2024 so obviously developments (or lack thereof) in the manga since then have changed a few things. If something seems out of place then it's probably something I missed updating before posting this. *----------------------------------------------------------------------------*

Alright, let's get this out of the way: Chiyuki ain't it for me in the romantic sense and I much prefer HakuHiro. I'd even go so far as to say that I'd actually rather see Kagurabachi have no romance at all than pair Chihiro up with Hiyuki as they are right now (more on that later).

But I'm also a major contributor to the Fandom Shipping Wiki pages for both HakuHiro and Chiyuki- I wrote the bulk of the content in the Canon, Moments, and Fandom sections for both ships as ThaerRyanim. So it's not like I hate the Chiyuki ship; far from it, in fact. It's not my jam but I was happy to help when someone reached out to me for assistance in filling out the Chiyuki page to prevent it from getting auto-pruned for lacking content. Therefore I won't be bashing the ship in here. I will be quibbling about mischaracterisations in the ship portrayed by the fandom at large a bit though.

I also really, really like Hiyuki as her own character. I love how she's been written and characterized as a badass with none of the baggage that usually weighs down women in shounen. Seeing her get to be so fuckin' awesome as a true equal in brawn to Chihiro was rad as hell. Combine that with not being sexualised or cast as "comically" super butch and I was won over in a heartbeat.

So I guess this is all from the perspective of a Hiyuki fan and die-hard HakuHiro shipper that doesn't like the romantic interpretations of Chihiro and Hiyuki's dynamic, but also sees the appeal and isn't going to trash the ship for the hell of it.

Kagari Hiyuki: Certified Unencumbered Badass

She was love at first sight.

This could age incredibly poorly as the series goes on but I have some faith in the author based on his writing choices around other characters that I love. I have a lot of complicated feelings about how women are depicted in media in general, but I won't be getting into them here. I guess the easiest way to summarize them is that "I wish women could be cool and physically strong without being cast as butch or secretly super girly more often". And Kagurabachi has delivered perfection in Hiyuki.

So far, she's been an agitator causing conflict because her mentality is so different to Chihiro's despite them agreeing on some fundamental things. Hiyuki's also noble, tough, and has depth to her with how willing she is to change her mind about Chihiro and set him up to talk with her bosses. Yet she's not too concerned about him and his well-being despite obviously feeling some sympathy by the end of the Rakuzaichi arc- no emotional support pillar stuff here.

From what we've seen so far she's basically your typical aggro rival character shoved in a woman's body and set loose to wreak havoc as needed. Hiyuki's so strong that she's basically an in-universe singularity that can keep up with magical nukes. She also loves to brawl with that good ol' hot-blooded penchant for violence and hates when someone doesn't match her all-out energy. But Hiyuki's not just a meathead- she cares deeply about doing the right thing and saving people, which is where her core character conflict will come from later on most likely. She wants to save and protect and will put her life on the line to do it in a way that's usually only reserved for men.

Her moment of weakness during the climax of the last arc was also incredibly gender-neutral in it's framing. Instead of revealing a scared, insecure inner voice and showing her trembling over the potential consequences, she simply wavers in the moment with an overload of conflicting desires almost exactly like Chihiro does. Then firms up her resolve and resumes punching to protect Hakuri until she brings the whole damn auction hall down to mark the end of the arc. God, I love her.

Hiyuki is a rival character done right. She's tough, a bit silly, a meathead to contrast Chihiro's tactical approach, and a fundamentally good person who might be working for some less-than-good people without realising it. She effortlessly gets under Chihiro's skin like no one else just by existing as herself too. Slightly feminine without any feelings that she should be girlier from the author. I LOVE KAGARI HIYUKI.

Well, so do a lot of people- the list to shake her hand would be miles long. But...

Canon vs. Fanon Interpretation

Hoo boy. So this is where some feathers might get ruffled, if anyone's reading this.

Everyone's going to have a slightly different interpretation of characters, events, and so forth. It's a lot of fun to browse through different community spaces to see all the unique perspectives people approach a series from, the things they notice and the conclusions they draw from the same information everyone else has.

I just don't understand why people take Hiyuki and give her huge bazongas, child-bearing hips, put her in girly clothes, and turn her into a generic tsundere a lot of the time.

Isn't the appeal of her character that she's a fearsome warrior with good intentions and a few screws loose? I understand that her fairly androgynous appearance isn't everyone's preference, but isn't that what Hinao, Sumi, and Iori are for? I sincerely don't like bashing people for what they enjoy. I just don't understand why Hiyuki gets treated the way she does by people who claim to like her. I figure if you like a character then you appreciate how they appear and act in canon.

She's got some attributes of a tsundere to be sure- the excessive pride, a caring heart that doesn't come across well in most of her behaviour, and particularly the Western misconception that they are often violent towards their love interest. The potential is there. But Hiyuki's much more than a collection of tropes put together to slot her into a galge lineup.

Like I ranted about before this, Hiyuki's presentation isn't feminine. Heck even the official EN translation messed up her pronouns because she was framed exactly like a guy in her role would be in her debut chapters! Instead of a trope bundle, Hiyuki is just herself, and I think this is the page that captures her best:

Ch. 20, before they settled on standard naming conventions for the series (fixed in volume releases unless you count Cloud Gouger, AKA Kuregumo)

She's never the brightest bulb nor the most compassionate person in the room. But she doesn't have the classic tsundere problem of not being able to be honest about what she's feeling- Hiyuki is 100% authentic every time she's on the screen, even to the point where she'll speak with her fists if she can't properly articulate her thoughts. She's brash and bold and says what's on her mind or punches the point home. And the kyaa-slap/borderline misandrist abuse tropes don't fit her either. She likes to fight because she's hot-blooded and prideful, not because she's trying to cover up her embarrassment! From what we've seen, she needs a moral reason and a strong opponent (and authorisation from her superiors) to bring out Rikuo in the first place.

This is something else that could age incredibly poorly depending on how the story goes, yeah. So far I've been given no reasons to doubt Hokazono-sensei's writing after he did the same gender-neutral framing with Sumi's actions then Iori's backstory though. He's not writing these girls to be waifu material but people. So to see Hiyuki getting reduced to a collection of ill-fitting tropes genuinely pisses me off sometimes.

I feel like she gets mischaracterised in the same ways Hakuri often does. People see some rough data points that point them towards a character archetype they already know and decide that's what the character is. Hakuri gets typecast as a funny weakling loser or a generic blushing uke (depending on what side of the fandom you're on), and Hiyuki gets typecast as a one-dimensional tsundere. It's stupidy reductive to how they actually appear in canon and is disrespectful to the rich writing behind them.

The warping of physical attributes is just a side-effect of this in my opinion. Even though Hokazono-sensei's art style has changed a lot since Hiyuki debuted, her general appearance hasn't, so I wonder where all the hyper feminine art of her is coming from. She's pretty flat and slender most of the time in canon, but a lot of artists round her out to give her more generic anime girl proportions. Same way Hakuri is often drawn as the more diminutive partner with Chihiro even though he's about the same build and even a smidge taller in canon.

I don't have a problem with individual people making what they want to see. I get that some people want to see Hiyuki dressed in feminine clothes and/or imagine what she'd look like if she had a bit more meat on her. I just have a problem when the vision of the fandom at large doesn't mesh with what's portrayed in canon. It makes talking about the characters frustrating because it's like we're referring to two completely different people.

Anyway, I'm not the fandom police, so I mostly say nothing and move on aside from an occasional rant to myself like this. And so we come to...

Chiyuki as a Ship

This yap is becoming a yapfest, huh?

It's... alright?

The mischaracterisations Hiyuki suffers in the wider fandom do affect how much I dislike this ship. Seeing her as a tsundere also messes with the bond between her and Chihiro, so we get a lot of subtly OOC portrayals of them in ship art. The worst ones even affect how Chihiro's portrayed and leave a really sour taste in my mouth. He's not a generic stoic guy manhandling his fiesty, blushy girlfriend who definitely doesn't appreciate his rare gestures of affection, nope. But again, it's easy to ignore and move on, so I do. I don't look for Chiyuki ship art anyway so maybe I've just had a bad batch of examples appear on my feeds.

It's hard to say how they would actually act in canon since they haven't interacted much for a while. I don't think the ship would appeal to me in that context either though. It was tough for me to help with the Wiki since I don't like the romantic tropes that could apply to them now or be likely in the future, like Belligerent Sexual Tension and Dating Catwoman. I just don't like Enemies to Lovers plots no matter what genders are involved, OK? It's the only thing I dislike more than doomed romances (sorry FushiUru, but I wrote a short essay talking about the appeal of that ship at least). I don't understand the appeal of going from annoying the shit out of each other to falling in love somehow. It just seems like a setup for a toxic relationship full of bickering and petty arguments that makes everyone around them hope they break up some day.

If they are intended to be the end-game pair though, then the only thing I'll ask of the author is to convince me.

I don't ask for much in terms of romance, honestly. I prefer when authors eschew a romantic sub-plot instead of including one for demographic reasons or whatever, but I'm at peace with the fact that most stories will have a canon romance of some kind. And of course it will involve the MC and the woman closest to him more often than not. I just don't like how most shounen romances are written.

Oh wow, what a hot take! But seriously, most of them feel like they're there because the guy's obligated to get the girl in the end. The authors rely on a few ship tease moments to set up all the flags instead of putting real thought into developing romantic chemistry a lot of the time, which leaves the last-minute pair up feel hollow and unearned. Doubly so when the protagonist is simply reacting to advances from the love interest... shounen readers can probably start listing off a bunch of titles where all the "effort" and interest comes from the girl while the guy's reaction ranges from blushing embarrassment to completely missing everything. We get her perspective on romance plenty but barely anything from him! Those subplots would feel way more rewarding if they got even half the effort the MC-deuteragonist friendship plots got.

I'd hate to see Hiyuki reduced to that kind of role. She's so interesting because she's got a shounen rival setup instead of a heroine's, you know? We get her thoughts about how Chihiro's annoying, a threat, someone she has to put down for the good of the nation, a crazy do-gooder, then someone who needs to prove himself as a good guy to her bosses. No thoughts about how cool and admirable he is or any other flags really- she's not thinking of him in terms of a potential romantic partner since we left off with her and it's so refreshing. It can always change going forward but I hope even if it does come to pass then she's not the only one with the burden of developing that relationship in the narrative.

In general there's not much to go on for the ship right now, however. I honestly struggled to help fill out the Wiki for it with enough content to remove it from the pruning list because they just haven't interacted with each other a lot yet. That's probably going to change as the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc goes on, given Hiyuki's billing as someone about on-par with Hakuri and Shiba in the story so far. Hopefully we'll get to her soon and then there will be lots more information on what she'll become to Chihiro! Just based on what we've seen so far, though...

Well, that paragraph aged really poorly. We've apparently got a long while to see what happens between them. Even so:

OK. I'm gonna say it.

I see them as siblings.

"Shut up and start hitting him already!"

I know it can come across as petty or vindictive since I prefer Chihiro's other major ship, but I guarantee you it's not. I actually feel a little guilty pulling the "I see them as siblings" card after witnessing that same take being used in bad faith to dismiss queer ships countless times. But it's genuine here: Chihiro and Hiyuki remind me so much of how my sibling and I used to interact that I got downright nostalgic.

Obviously my sibling and I never had magical nukes to use on each other (the world would be well into a permanent nuclear winter if we did). It's just that Hiyuki and Chihiro effortlessly annoying the hell out of each other but still trusting the other to get the job done is peak sibling behaviour, in my humble opinion! I couldn't see them any other way after their little squabble in the storehouse fight. There's also this bit about their designs:

The design parallels between Hiyuki and Chihiro get me feeling a certain kind of way and this cover activated the brain worms. It's so deliberate that they have the same colour scheme in canon and this AU-ish art- mostly black with a bit of red on top- and now they have matching loose arm bandages for some reason? Hakuri's the only one of the three who gets to do his own thing!

I've got two theories on why this is, but we really need to see more of Hiyuki before I'm comfortable with going on a major yapfest about them. Suffice to say that she's either the LI as someone extremely similar to Chihiro so she "gets" him in a way no one else can, or she's actually related to Chihiro somehow. I prefer the second one far more than the first but I won't drop the manga if Chiyuki is the end-game. (Told you it was batshit nonsense.)

Yes that's both of their faces layered over each other's. Hm.

There's a lot of joking and grumbling about Hokazono-sensei having a boner for black-white-red colour schemes over everything else, I know. He uses it all the time and doesn't seem keen on deviating. Chihiro is the face of the series and black-white-red is his palette though. So I think that's an aesthetic choice to set the vibe of the series and make it more striking when it's broken- like with Hakuri's black-white-blue and the Bearers being in pink, yellow, blue, and green. Other semi-major characters like Shiba and Uruha have different palettes or deliberately don't include one of the triad, like Samura who is missing red from his. The only character who's matched Chihiro in this regard in every coloured appearance is Hiyuki.

Not only matched, but copied when other characters don't, like in the techwear cover.

To the point where even her face is almost identical to Chihiro's.

It's just a theory and I've been wrong so often I should shut up and stop sharing my thoughts forever! But this feels extremely deliberate in a series that takes so much care in layering details to present the themes of the story. Whether it has romantic intent or not is something only the author knows- it could definitely be a flag for the two of them being so similar that they naturally belong together even if they seem like opposite reflections. I'll just hold my pet theory close to my heart and see what happens with them once we finally get back to the folks we left behind at the start of Samurabachi.

LGBTQ America: A Theme Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer History—chapter 09. Sexual and Gender Diversity in Native America and the Pacific Islands by Will Roscoe. part 2

Two Spirits in Native Tradition: Roles, Genders, Identities and Diversity cont.

In the twentieth century, ‘berdache’ “became the standard anthropological term for alternative gender roles among Native Americans. By the 1980’s, however, there was call for a change among scholars. In 1990, at a gathering of Native American and First Nations people, the term ‘two-spirit(ed)’ was coined. “Today, the term is used to refer to “both male-bodied and female-bodied native people who mix, cross, or combine the standard roles of men and women” (09-5).

The author acknowledges in a footnote that the term has its limitations (translation errors, and the fact that many tribes believe that all of us have the essence/spirit of male and female in us). But none of his reasons for these limitations match with my main critique both with the term two-spirit but mostly with the way it is often spoken of. Even within the acknowledgement of individuals who do not conform 100% to the Western concept of man or woman, the people are still fit into a binary. They are referred to as ‘male bodied’ and ‘female bodied’ two-spirited people.

To me, this often feels like an easy way for people to ‘short cut’ their understanding of native genders—as soon as they understand the way someone is sexed, they can still fit that person into a category, even if those categories are imperfect. Intersexuality is a ghost when topics of sex and gender arise. More and more, we understand that sex is not immutable, it is yet another social construction—the process of someone developing in utero and then continuing to grow and change in their lifetime is so complex that very often people do not fit neatly into either the distinct category of male or female.

Whether that is their very chromosomes, hormones, secondary or primary sex characteristics—all these things and more combine to create a person. A person whose very sex is unique to them, as their gender is unique to them. Who knows the true reality of the two-spirit’s biological sex? No one—unless they are given extensive expensive testing that has only recently become available.

The truth is that intersexuality is natural and is common in humans, even in the Western world with its biopolitical control and its dualisms. The reason two-spirit people were and are held so special is because they do not fit neatly into these categories. To me it feels a kind of modern colonial erasure to try and sex the bodies of people who often very clearly and blatantly blurred all barriers. It feels as if it misses the entire point of the term two-spirit, as least as I understand it. But, I have not read much into what other two-spirits (especially elders) think about this concept. “Two-spirit males have been documented in at least 155 tribes; in about a third of these a recognized status for females who adopted a masculine lifestyle existed as well”. (09-6) But as Roscue later adds, “absence of evidence cannot be taken as evidence of absence” (09-8).

In general, the lives of “native women have been overlooked […] and obscured by Euro-American sexual and racial stereotypes. Taking a broader view reveals that women throughout North American and the Pacific Islands often engaged in male pursuits, from hunting to warfare and tribal leadership, without necessarily acquiring a different gender identity” (09-8). Roscoe then offers some examples of Indigenous women being awesome. The author then lists examples of traditional terms for two-spirited people across various tribes and explains that many of them cannot be literally translated into gender binary terms like ‘man-woman’. “These terms have lead anthropologists, historians, and archaeologists to describe two-spirit roles as alternative or multiple genders” (09-6). In fact, “many native societies are capable of accommodating three, four, and possibly more genders, or having a gender system characterized by fluidity, transformation, and individual variation” (09-7).

The author discusses how two-spirit children were identified often as youth by the certain type of activities they liked to participate in. Oftentimes ceremonies ‘marked’ people with two-spirit status. He then goes on to discuss the other ways two-spirits lived in society. “In many instances, male and female two spirits were medicine people, healers, shamans, and ceremonial leaders” (09-8). Certain ceremonial functions were specific to two-spirits and they were often seen to hold great power (09-8). “Because two-spirits occupied a distinct gender status, their relationships were not viewed as being same-sex” (09-9). !!!! This feels so important for some reason!!

Sexual and Gender Diversity in Native Hawai’i

This section further emphases that indigenous peoples have had genders that go beyond male or female, man or woman and also that colonial violence is a tragedy. While I respect and love the people of Hawai’i and their struggles are so, so similar to Native Americans, I believe that the vast majority of Native Hawaiians do NOT consider themselves Native American (or American Indian or even just American) so my covering on this topic will be limited.

Roscoe speaks about the mahu stones that have extraordinarily sacred significance—these stones have a powerful history and connection to the mahu people (their gender diverse term). (This summary is literally so terrible and not at all a true representative of how important and beautiful this topic is, I apologize). Like the people, the stones faced colonization and were figuratively and then literally buried—“in the 1920s they were buried beneath a bowling alley” (09-15). They have since been reclaimed and are now being properly respected but, for the native peoples, “the Land inheres as sacred—beyond human perception and conception, beyond our capacities for belief and imagination—in and of itself” (09-15) and “If there were no humans on earth, they would still be sacred” (09-15). The stone’s spiritual power ‘has never been interrupted’ (09-15).

What are your headcanons regarding Kyle and Jackie? I think it’s great that they were shown as friends in that particular episode.

Furthermore, why did you decide to alter your Kick Buttowski design? I don’t mind it, in fact, I think it looks really great, but I thought the previous one was fantastic.

To anwser latter first: Mostly because I missed his giant stupid collar (affectionate). Additionally, I felt like I kinda failed to make him look older in the previous design (he is supposed to be 15-ish) and I didn't like the silhouette that much so yeah.

My previous design is still "canon" in my interpretation, tho. It's his emo phase jgjkskfkd

OH YEAH, FERAL GREMLINS HEADCANONS LES GO

(Combining the two)

1. After some time Kyle's family moved in in the Mellowbrook, much to Kick's disdain. He lives on the other side of the city and goes to a different school but his visits are much more frequent now.

2. Jackie’s parrot name is "Captain SKKBRM". The last part is composed of first letters of her idols. And yes, there is a reason S comes before K. 

3. Jackie is low-key Kyle's translator. If Kyle has to say something important he goes so far off-topic with a verbal version of "wall of text" so the important part kinda gets lost. Jackie, however, can listen to him about the time he tried to tame a raccoon and say "Oh, so tomorrow's event is gonna start an hour early! Got it!"

4. Kick did talk to them about his boundaries and they more or less respected them, which allowed both Jackie and Kyle to hang out with him more often without Kick trying to escape. They're still wacky weirdos, but at least Kick tolerates them, so there's progress. 

5. While Kick tolerates them, Gunther is actually their friend. Gunther also still thinks they're wack, but to him, they're more of a "funny kind of wack". Also, they are just as casually dramatic as Gunther, so you know they would get along.

6. They have a private weekly game of "Who got more trivia about Kick". They're neck in neck in it most of the time.

7. Kyle and Ronaldo met only once and Ronaldo’s take away from that encounter is "Buttowskis must be studied in a lab. What is wrong with this family?"

8. They are besties your honor. That's it.

9. Kyle has ADHD. He was diagnosed pretty recently, and it changed the way he is treated by his close and extended family. Whenever Kyle isn't with Jackie - Kick is just way more chill and mellow with him and would hang out with him if Kyle asks. While Brad and Brianna still don't like Kyle that much, they will give you a side eye if you try to insult him by pointing out how annoying and talkative he is. 

10. On that topic - Jackie is neurotypical. She IS just a weirdo. Her reaction to learning that Kyle has ADHD was "Who is Aydee and why are they HD? Is that a camera? DID YOU GET A CAMERA THAT CAN FINALLY CAPTURE HOW AWESOME KICK IS?!" 

After learning what ADHD is - literally nothing changed with Jackie and Kyle's friendship.

11. After a while Kyle got into sewing and knitting. It wasn't surprising for anyone. The boy loves puppets, and it was only a matter of time before he started making clothes for them. 

12. Jackie on the other hand enjoys carpentry when she's... Y'know... Not stalking Kick. She carves little puppets for Kyle sometimes too.

Yes, she did carve a wooden statue of Kick, why do you ask?

13. After Kick and Kendall started dating and Jackie started to consistently obsess over Kendall as well, Kyle was a bit worried. He really values Jackie as a friend and was afraid that their friendship is based on their obsession with his cousin, so Jackie getting a new idol made him worry.(Kyle knows Kendall and is neutral about her unlike Jackie) When it came to light, Jackie’s response to that "Dude, Kick's fan or not, you're my best friend! That's like, even better than being my idol!" 

They are weirdos and they will stick together your honor :)

14. Jackie’s dad is an absent dad. Jackie thinks that she doesn't have a dad, but it never bothers her that much. 

That is to say: her dad is a celebrity, and there's a reason Jackie’s mom really doesn't like Kick.
