Adding onto this that my current version of Windows 11 does not have gpedit installed by default (like why, if not to prevent people doing this?!). To enable, I followed the first instruction at https://windowsreport.com/windows-cannot-find-gpedit-msc-windows-11/ . That website is also the first search result from DuckDuckGo for searching “windows 11 gpedit not found” as of the time of this edition.
I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence
Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.
Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.

Jonathan Nicholson at HuffPost:
President Donald Trump said Monday he intended to put tariffs on a wide swath of products and basic materials in American life, a prospect that could lead to prices shooting higher for U.S. consumers. “In particular, in the very near future, we’re going to be placing tariffs on foreign production of computer chips, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, to return production of these essential goods to the United States of America,” Trump said during an appearance before House Republicans holding their annual party retreat in Doral, Florida. “We’re going to look at chips, semiconductors, and we’re going to look at steel and some other industries. You’re going to see things happening.” Trump also listed aluminum and copper as potential tariff targets as “things that we need for our military.” If he follows through, the tariffs could have a big impact on Americans’ costs of living. Trump has often incorrectly said tariffs — charges put on goods imported into the U.S. — are paid by the country the goods originate from. Companies that bring in the goods actually pay the tariffs.
Trump looking to hurt the US economy with his tariffs proposal that would go after a wide swath of products.

QUESTION TWO:
SWITCH BOXES. you said that’s what monitors the connections between systems in the computer cluster, right? I assume it has software of its own but we don’t need to get into that, anyway, I am so curious about this— in really really large buildings full of servers, (like multiplayer game hosting servers, Google basically) how big would that switch box have to be? Do they even need one? Would taking out the switch box on a large system like that just completely crash it all?? While I’m on that note, when it’s really large professional server systems like that, how do THEY connect everything to power sources? Do they string it all together like fairy lights with one big cable, or??? …..the voices……..THE VOICES GRR
Tumblr media
I’m acending (autism)
ALRIGHT! I'm starting with this one because the first question that should be answered is what the hell is a server rack?
Once again, long post under cut.
So! The first thing I should get out of the way is what is the difference between a computer and a server. Which, is like asking the difference between a gaming console and a computer. Or better yet, the difference between a gaming computer and a regular everyday PC. Which is... that they are pretty much the same thing! But if you game on a gaming computer, you'll get much better performance than on a standard PC. This is (mostly) because a gaming computer has a whole separate processor dedicated to processing graphics (GPU). A server is different from a PC in the same way, it's just a computer that is specifically built to handle the loads of running an online service. That's why you can run a server off a random PC in your closet, the core components are the same! (So good news about your other question. Short answer, yes! It would be possible to connect the hodgepodge of computers to the sexy server racks upstairs, but I'll get more into that in the next long post)
But if you want to cater to hundreds or thousands of customers, you need the professional stuff. So let's break down what's (most commonly) in a rack setup, starting with the individual units (sometimes referred to just as 'U').
Short version of someone setting one up!
18 fucking hard drives. 2 CPUs. How many sticks of ram???
Holy shit, that's a lot. Now depending on your priorities, the next question is, can we play video games on it? Not directly! This thing doesn't have a GPU so using it to render a video game works, but you won't have sparkly graphics with high frame rate. I'll put some video links at the bottom that goes more into the anatomy of the individual units themselves.
Tumblr media
I pulled this screenshot from this video rewiring a server rack! As you can see, there are two switch boxes in this server rack! Each rack gets their own switch box to manage which unit in the rack gets what. So it's not like everything is connected to one massive switch box. You can add more capacity by making it bigger or you can just add another one! And if you take it out then shit is fucked. Communication has been broken, 404 website not found (<- not actually sure if this error will show).
So how do servers talk to one another? Again, I'll get more into that in my next essay response to your questions. But basically, they can talk over the internet the same way that your machine does (each server has their own address known as an IP and routers shoot you at one).
POWER SUPPLY FOR A SERVER RACK (finally back to shit I've learned in class) YOU ARE ASKING IF THEY ARE WIRED TOGETHER IN SERIES OR PARALLEL! The answer is parallel. Look back up at the image above, I've called out the power cables. In fact, watch the video of that guy wiring that rack back together very fast. Everything on the right is power. How are they able to plug everything together like that? Oh god I know too much about this topic do not talk to me about transformers (<- both the electrical type and the giant robots). BASICALLY, in a data center (place with WAY to many servers) the building is literally built with that kind of draw in mind (oh god the power demands of computing, I will write a long essay about that in your other question). Worrying about popping a fuse is only really a thing when plugging in a server into a plug in your house.

what's pissing me off most about the election is how many people who have similar opinions are absolutely tearing into each other in search of someone to "blame" for the trump win. It doesn't matter what we could've done differently because at the end of the day it's done. blaming each other and turning on each other is only gonna help the white supremacists who want to run this country. so instead we need to focus on creating community so that we have a network of resistance and care built into our lives. tear into trump supporters all you want but if you are anti trump, if you were discontent with both options, if you were/are whatever, focus on people who share the same ideas as you and how you can build each other up and make your community stronger. that is where revolution begins. not yelling about ballots that have already been cast.

I'm speechless
"That's not a bug; it's a feature" is the punchline of endless programmer humor. But this isn't a joke, and it isn't funny.
What more can I say?

Nextcloud success!
It's been a while, but I've finally succeeded at spinning up something that caused me to start this journey to begin with: Nextcloud! Unfortunately, it's very slow and it's kind of eating up a ton of resources from my homeserver. I'd like to add another RAM stick to it, but we all know how that went last time. The RAM works just fine in my friend's computer, so I'm not sure if the socket is bad in the motherboard or if it just doesn't play nice with what else I've got in there. Oh well.
If I want to start adding new computers to the Proxmox network, it's going to have to be old laptops I can grab from the thrift store or something. Unfortunately, I have to get some money to dump on a new NVMe drive for my Pi since the one I have is SATA or something and it won't accept it. Adelle will take it, but Lenny won't.
There are also a few more servers I need to get going, like Calibre-Web, Atsumeru, etc. We'll see how that goes in the future. Soon the only thing left for my gaming PC to do is the media server, which seems to be the only thing it's okay doing without getting irritated.

First thing i see is those pos trump and vance berating zelensky, demanding gratitude, during talks at the white house. They ambushed him. And they called him disrespectful. On live tv. Bullying him. They were baiting him to snap, i dont know how he managed to keep cool.
Genuinely nauseating

I'm just baffled as to them REFUSING THE RESIDUALS for streaming services! Like wtf?! Or address the whole AI concern. They reject more reasonable stuff because they seem to just want to keep their pockets in line. As if they don't understand WHO they are paying their actors for.
It's an industry that refuses to evolve naturally:
Utilizing datasets from interest pools that legitimately reflect the average consumer, adjusting how residuals are handled to compensate for the paradigm-shift the forced-jump to streaming has caused, and realizing that in a country where not everyone working in the same field has the same level of fiscal support so certain things (like on-set meals, workplace health benefits, etc
And wants to evolve in a selective matter akin to breeding pugs:
Oh, these people can survive on these chicken-shit residual checks; we don't have to consider streaming at all~ A select group of people who live around the corner in Beverly Hills say that TV needs more sanctimonius preaching and belittling of Heartland America, so let's just tailor everything towards that~ Okay, but I make enough money so I can order food everyday, so that means those who work underneath me are in the same circumstances, right~? Right~
And, again, for people who say that the real problem is the writers and actors in this situation for producing subpar work: You can remove or teach a human. However, when a company starts relying more and more on AI or some other detached computation-based system, you don't get that opportunity anymore.
Trust me: American Education is currently suffering from that bit of bother.
