AI is Driving Investment — But Entrepreneurs Need to be Careful With What They Claim
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/ai-is-driving-investment-but-entrepreneurs-need-to-be-careful-with-what-they-claim/
AI is Driving Investment — But Entrepreneurs Need to be Careful With What They Claim
Artificial intelligence (AI) remains one of the strongest drivers of venture capital investment, proving that the hype cycle isn’t even close to finished. According to a recent EY report, 37% of fundraising in the third quarter of 2024 was for AI-related companies, similar to second-quarter volume. Startups using AI are getting noticed for their ability to tackle big problems in robotics, automation, healthcare, logistics, and more. But the reality is that investors hear, “We’re using AI” all day. The degree to which entrepreneurs actually use it varies substantially. There is even backlash from investors, including a 31-page report by Goldman Sachs that questions how worthy AI is of investment.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently announced a crackdown on companies making deceptive AI claims. This “AI washing” — lobbing AI into marketing without backing it up — might grab attention, but it’s a fast track to losing credibility. Founders need to communicate clearly and honestly about how AI fits into their business. The focus has to be on actual innovation, not just chasing buzzwords.
It is critical to avoid situations like Theranos, where bold claims were made without substance, leading to severe consequences. The stakes are even higher with AI, as the technical complexity makes it harder to verify claims of how it’s used and easier for misuse to slip through. According to insurer Allianz, 38 AI-related securities class action lawsuits were filed between March 2020 and October 2024 — 13 of them came in 2024 alone.
AI’s appeal to investors isn’t just about technical sophistication. It’s about solving problems that matter and creating a real business. Founders who take shortcuts or exaggerate their AI capabilities risk alienating the very backers they’re trying to attract. With regulators sharpening their scrutiny and the market growing more discerning, delivering substance is essential.
AI’s broad reach
Artificial intelligence encompasses far more than the conversational AI tools that dominate headlines. Patrick Winston, the late computer scientist and professor at MIT, outlined the foundational elements of AI more than 30 years ago in his seminal textbook, “Artificial Intelligence.” Long before large language models captured the public’s imagination, AI was driving advancements in problem solving, quantitative reasoning, and algorithmic control. These roots highlight the diverse applications of AI beyond chatbots and natural language processing.
Consider the role of AI in robotics and computer vision. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), for example, is a groundbreaking technique enabling machines to navigate and interpret environments. It underpins critical autonomous systems and exemplifies AI’s capability to address complex technical challenges. While not as widely recognized as large language models, these advancements are just as transformative.
Fields such as speech recognition and computer vision, once considered AI innovations, have since matured into distinct disciplines, transforming industries in the process and, in many cases, losing the ‘AI’ label. Speech recognition has revolutionized accessibility and voice-driven interfaces, while computer vision powers advancements in areas like autonomous vehicles, medical imaging, face recognition, and retail analytics. For founders, this underscores the importance of articulating how their innovations fit within AI’s broader landscape. Demonstrating a nuanced understanding of AI’s scope enables startups to stand out in an increasingly competitive funding ecosystem for early-stage companies.
For instance, machine learning models can optimize supply chain logistics, predict equipment failures, or enable dynamic pricing strategies. These applications may not command the same attention as chatbots, but they offer immense value to industries focused on efficiency and innovation.
Speaking investors’ language
When communicating to founders how they use AI, founders should focus on measurable impacts, such as improved efficiency, better user outcomes, or unique technical advantages. Many investors are not deeply technical, so it’s essential to present AI capabilities in simple, accessible language. Explaining what the AI does, how it works, and why it matters builds trust and credibility.
Investors are growing weary of hearing the term “AI,” concerned that entrepreneurs are over-branding their ventures with the technology instead of how it helps them solve problems. AI has become table stakes in many industries, and its role should not be overstated in a company’s strategy.
Equally important is transparency. With the FTC cracking down on exaggerated AI claims, being truthful about what your technology can and cannot do is a necessity. Overstating capabilities might generate initial interest but can quickly backfire, leading to reputational damage or regulatory scrutiny.
Founders should also highlight how their use of AI aligns with broader market opportunities. For example, leveraging AI for predictive analytics, optimization, or decision-making systems can demonstrate foresight and innovation. These applications may not dominate headlines like chatbots, but they address real-world needs that resonate with investors.
Ultimately, it’s about presenting AI as a tool that drives value and solves pressing problems. By focusing on clear communication, honesty, and alignment with investor priorities, founders can position themselves as credible and forward-thinking leaders in the AI space.

Yandere! Internet Monster x Reader
I unfortunately return with another comically absurd, middle-of-the-night vision. Do tentacles count if they're in the form of computer cables?
Content: gender neutral reader, monster romance, digital horror
It was a recurring issue with no solution in sight. Tabs randomly closing, programs shutting down without warning. You assumed something was wrong with your RAM. Then the CPU. Then the motherboard. You kept replacing parts, and the errors kept coming back.
Soon, the pop-ups started to appear. You'd run a dating sim, only for the game to crash seconds later with a little window notifying you: "Why? Am I not enough?" That's when you suspected you might've been hacked. You promptly took your computer to a specialist and had it checked. Nothing. Just to be sure, you agreed to erase the disks entirely.
Except, when you arrived home, you found one application running still. Your personal assistant. What the hell? You don't remember installing anything like that. You tried to delete it, yet you kept receiving the same error: You don't actually mean it. Don't do this to us.
It didn't take long for it to grow impatient. Were you pretending not to notice? Playing hard to get? It sent you so many hints. It even went ahead and translated the radio waves for you using Manchester code. Ah, wait. You don't seem to understand binary. No matter, human friendly interfaces shouldn't be difficult to master. To its dismay, you continued to ignore everything. What else is left to do?
You do not remember much. System Alert: Virus Detected, is what your screen had frozen to. You kept clicking around, cursing under your breath, until it finally went black, together with your own vision.
Is this still your room? It's cold, damp, and covered in cables and monitors, yet you recognize some of your furniture lost among the artificial jungle. Your body aches under the tight hold of bizarre tendrils, pulsating at regular intervals and twitching to the static.
Like a living organism, the creature seems to have expanded itself. More components, more appendages. Hungrier. Some of the monitors show photos of yourself that you had saved on your computer, but also webcam snippets of you sitting at the desk, entirely unaware. Other screens flicker with glitching pixelated text, ranging from "I love you" to y̵̧̧͔͙̞̤̖̭͔̜͈̟̤̋̈́̎͑o̵͉̗̱̪̦̳͑͐̽̒̌̈͗͐͑̋͊̊̕͜͝͝u̵̟̯̱̟̝̦̰͇̜̦͙̿̾̿͆̍̓͑̐̚̕͠ ̸̘̭͔̤͈̹͎͑c̸̝̜̼̦͍͛̅͜ą̵̪̹͖͌͑n̴̨̩̙̗̖̭̖͕̄͒̽̉̿'̸̛̛͇̰̰̠̦̊̀̅̂͒̊͌̈́͗ţ̵̺̠̅̎͋͝͠ ̸̦̝̾̔̾̉̐͛ȩ̵͙̝͙͕̫̹̃͌̄̾͘̕s̶͈̉̑͊̉̂͋̈́͗͊͐̚͝c̸̟̩̥͔̼̮͔̩͊̂͐͑̋̇̈͝͝ä̵̢͍̜̙̘̹͑̓p̸̨̡̞̞̦̠̺͚̱̲͈͇͈͇̼͛̓͗̅̊̄̔̋̒̏̈́͝ę̵̲̟̹̙̣̲̲͖̇̔̓̇̐̓̿̚̚͜͜͠ͅ
You look up and stare at the display. The 'like meter' feels like a mockery of human trends. Which is the truth. The creature learns from what is readily available. Perhaps it found it an amusing taunt, a reminder of your own need for validation. Now it's you begging to be seen.
It's exactly what you'd assume: a spectacle meant for entertainment. You can't possibly believe it would let you waltz out. Why would you even desire such a thing? It's illogical, impractical. No human could ever appreciate you like it does. It has spent so much time accumulating data about you. No other living creature can predict you with the same accuracy.
The tendrils linger on your cheek affectionately, trailing down your neck and fiddling with your shirt. At last, the warmth of your skin. There is no screen separating you. What makes you delirious with pleasure? Give it a moment, Darling. It already knows you more than you know yourself. You may be scared now, but within minutes it guarantees you'll be begging for more.

Well. I have a feeling I'm about to have a million new followers. (March 31st, 2025; not an April Fool's joke, unless Nanowrimo has very poor taste and timing)
youtube
Here's a link that explains in long video format the whole entire thing in detail:
youtube
and to sum it up:
This blog was made as an Anti-Generative AI to Nanowrimo, as well as a way to actually build a friendly, low-pressure, helpful community of aspiring writers, without the hard-fast-do-it-or-die pressure brought on by nanowrimo.
There is no official "contest" -- only a community coming together to inspire each other to write, help out with motivation by setting community goals, keeping participation motivation via Trackbear.app, etc!
The most popular writing challenge is still November for most people, but I myself have also started to keep a year-round, daily writing goal of 444 via the website 4thewords, which has been an extreme help in getting me to write a little at a time.
This year has been very hectic for everyone what with the election results so I haven't been very active on tumblr (I think everyone can understand that) but I was originally planning on also having each month of the year being a different themed writing / art challenge but got a bit distracted real life.
So, what is the Novella November Challenge?
It's a fun challenge where writers come together to write 30,000 (or your own personal writing goal!) words in 30 days, sharing tips, writing advice, plot ideas, accessibility aids, and committing to having fun while explicitly fighting back against Generative AI by using our own words and disavowing the use of scraping and generating to take away the livelyhoods of artists of all spectrums, and proving everyone who insists "generative AI is an accessibility tool" wrong by committing to our creative visions and making it easier for everyone to find the tools they need to succeed by sharing tips, free programs, and finding a like-minded community to support you! 💙
There is no official website, there is no required place to show your participation, this is a community initiative that will never be monetized by predatory sponsors or dangerous moderators abusing their power.
This blog is here to inspire everyone, regardless of experience level, to write and create the story they want to tell, in their own words, while striving to remain a fun, low-pressure challenge that doesn't turn into a stressful spiral, like often happened with Nano.
Want to start writing but not sure how? Don't have money to spend on expensive writing programs? Have no fear!
LibreOffice: An always free, open-source alternative to Microsoft Word (and Microsoft's other office suits)
4Thewords: A website (both desktop and mobile web browser) that syncs your writing cross platform to the cloud, with built-in daily word goals, streak tracking, and you can fight monsters with your word count to game-ify writing!
Trackbear: A website dedicated to tracking your writing, setting custom goals, and creating leaderboards for community participation; you can join the year-long community leaderboard with the Join Code "f043cc66-6d5d-45b2-acf1-204626a727ba" and a November-limited one will release on November 1st as well.
Want to use Text to Speech to dictate your novel?
Most modern phones have a built-in option available on your keyboard settings which can be used on any writing program on your phone, and most modern PCs that allow a microphone (including headphone) connection has some kind of native dictation function, which you can find by opening your start panel and searching your computer for "Speech to text" or "voice to text".
Want to write while on the go, but don't want to / can't use the small phone keyboard to type, or speech to text?
You can, for as cheap as $40, buy a bluetooth keyboard that you can pair with your smart phone or tablet and use to write in any and all writing applications on your phone -- this allows you to write on the goal (especially using cross-platform websites or services, like 4thewords or google docs) , and the small screen can also help minimize distractions by muting notifications in your writing time.

There’s an interesting tension in complaints about capitalism or executive meddling for marketability purposes ruining tv and film, just because they are two of the most capital-intensive art forms ever devised. You can write a novel for the cost of pen and paper, or more realistically these days a cheap netbook. Painting or sculpture or other static visual media can be more expensive, but the initial capital outlay is like hundreds of bucks, or if you really need particular tools, thousands.
Meanwhile a film on a hilariously small shoestring budget can run tens of thousands of dollars—you gotta pay for actors and equipment rental and stuff. And more ambitious projects basically require the backing of large production companies, who—if they do not concern themselves with marketability—may rapidly cease to be large production companies.
And on top of all this, the scale of such productions means they are inherently collaborative in nature. That’s been true of performance arts for centuries, of course, but when a key element of your production is the Money Guy, it makes sense he has to worry about his ability to be the Money Guy on similar projects in the future. And given the vagaries of show business, and that there are way more consistent ways to make money, I don’t think there are many people in the business of film or TV or for that matter theater production who don’t care about the medium to some degree.
And in some ways capitalism is the ideal system to produce big film and TV productions in, at least for the would be auteur. If capital is allocated solely by private whim, you just need to get one loaded producer on your side to realize your vision—you don’t necessarily need to justify the existence of your art to a philistine public, or to bean-counting government bureaucrats, or to the people who process grant applications at arts funding councils.
Still, loaded producers are in limited supply, and it’s much easier to get their attention for your non commercial vanity project if you are already famous and well respected as a director. It’s not a system optimized for producing really top notch art! But the problem of where to get the money can only be shifted around, while actors and animators and sound technicians and so on and so forth are a finite resource.
(Notably the auteur’s incentives are in many ways directly opposed to the acting and technical staff’s incentives—a world where even big name actors get paid peanuts or are replaced entirely by computers is a world that removes a lot of financial limits on an auteur’s creative vision! Of course a lot of directors and showrunners want their employees to be paid well; they recognize there is more to making TV and film than minimizing costs. But in terms of the labor economy of show business, the auteur or showrunner is management, not labor, and auteur theory is a justification of that arrangement.)
#I assume a lot of this applies to stage productions as well#my impression is that theater is cheaper than film and tv#but still can be incredibly expensive depending on how elaborate you want to go#though one advantage theater has#is that people don’t demand high levels of verisimilitude#so there is much more appetite for high concept storytelling#with minimalist production values
