I'm Noah, and I write queer fantasy books with disabled and/or neurodivergent characters.

The Eternal Machine was my debut book, the first in an epic and dark steampunk fantasy series. ⚔️🏴‍☠️
Phantom and Rook is a cozy urban fantasy, and the first one I went 'all out' with. I also have special news about this one. 🏳️‍🌈✨
The Rebel Foxes is the last book I released, and it's the first one under my new trans af pen name, Noah Hawthorne. It's a standalone in an interconnected dark fantasy punk series. 🔥🏳️‍⚧️

୨୧┇"What are 5 Things that make YOU Happy?" ᡣ𐭩ྀིྀ‧₊˚ ⋅🧘🏻‍♀️🌷
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For me personally (not ranked):
1. Sunny Afternoons/Golden Hour -> When I come home, I usually see the sun’s warm rays filtering through the trees outside my bedroom window, and it just fills me with so much love and admiration for nature and just the little things yk? (+ It’s so relaxing to see<3)
2. My Headphones & Music!! -> I own the Sony WH-1000XM3 (I totally recommend it, best type of headphones out there imo, the noise cancelling is heavenly and the headphones themselves are super comfortable<3), and listening to music like r&b, bossa nova, the wonder girls, kali uchis, asian hits from the 80's and sometimes just a chill instrumental is so wonderful<3
3. Reading Cozy Fantasy Books<3 -> I’m getting back into this genre and honestly, I should’ve done so sooner! All I can say for this one is that I love love love cozy fantasy, it’s such a comfort to me<3 I’m currently (slowly) reading two books that have been recommended a lot in this genre (both covers are so beautiful too!):
♡ “Can’t spell Treason without Tea” by Rebecca Thorne
♡ “Legends & Lattes” by Travis Baldree (a lot of people love this one!)
4. Nature Walks at the Park or a National Reserve -> (with good weather) This is honestly such a good way to improve your mood, reduce any anxiety or worries you may have as well as just helping you feel more relaxed and at ease.
5. Sleeping!!!!! -> Being able to just sleep peacefully without having to anticipate when your alarm is going to give you a mini heart attack or when you have to get up early is so magical to me for some reason. I can just sleep without a care in the world and wake up on my own terms.
🎀 notes: I wasn't able to fit this in but spending time with my family (and friends) is definitely up there of course! I love family movie nights and hanging out! There are so many things that make me happy and that I'm grateful for, I can't possibly fit them all in to one post..I think Tumblr would crash if I did lmao :3

I’ve struggled on and off for years with reading high fantasy books because they’re all so similar and get bogged down in all the high stakes drama. But Legends & Lattes really changed the game for me. This was the coziest and sweetest thing I’ve read in a while and I loved that it revolves around a little coffee shop in a fantasy/dnd-like setting. It was so much fun to see a fantasy world from this perspective! It was so different and cozy and unique. I wish there were more books like this one.
I loved Viv and the found family that she made for herself. Tandri and Cal were amazing and helpful and grounding for Viv. And Thimble! I just wanted to eat all the pastries that he made. This book made me so hungry, it’s not even funny! Another thing that I loved about this book was the quiet queerness of it. It was so soft and gentle. I also really liked that this story was about Viv finding a new place for herself after she decided to retire from adventuring. It was so nice to see her build a business from the ground up and finally be able to settle down to enjoy it.
If it’s not obvious yet, this was a really great read and I’m looking forward to whatever comes next for this series. I’m giving Legends & Lattes a solid five stars!

I'm not gonna lie, I'm really confused by what people consider cozy fantasy. Even *if* you can set aside the rampant casual racism and ableism in the genre (which....how?), where is the cozy factor in a book described as a brutal war tale? And why are we categorizing Dianna Wynne Jones' Howl's Moving Castle as cozy fantasy? Did we read the same book? Did we forget what actually happened to the prince, and all of the things studio ghibli wayyy toned down in the movie?
To each their own, but I think people confuse comfort stories with coziness. You can have the most fucked up books be comfort stories, but coziness has (or used to have) a certain meaning and vibe, and I think we're losing that. If you tell me a book is cozy fantasy yet the main character is racist against both her own mixed family as well as toward herself, and she's forcing her "help" on the love interest while simultaneously saying shit like "I didn't sign up to be a baby sitter", where is the cozy element? The fact that they're running errands together and eating sweets and falling in love for some reason while still treating each other poorly? I'm stressed! I'm not feeling cozy right now. WHO finds this cozy, and why????
I want to read a cozy fantasy by an author of color, preferably a disabled author of color (or an abled author of color who doesn't pump the story full of ableism) and I want to know if the whole fucking genre has these issues or if it's just the way white people write "cozy" fantasy. If anyone has recs please send them my way (and yes, I'm going to tag this cozy fantasy, not to upset people who love the genre, but because I want book recs. I need to believe that there are good things happening in this genre, too)

January 2024 Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book: A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon
Author: Sarah Hawley
Series: Glimmer Falls book 1
Rating:🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
All of the plot twists were pretty obvious beforehand, but I think that's part of the charm to this book. It was a really cute, fun, and cozy read.
I loved the environmentalist themes and the dynamic between the two main characters. The way Oz helped Mariel be more confident in herself was wonderful and something I think is really important to exhibit in media.

Book: A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch
Author: Sarah Hawley
Series: Glimmer Falls book 2
Rating:🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
This book was even better than it's predecessor. I absolutely adored Calladia as a character and the way Astaroth treated her once they became closer. The female empowerment in this book is one of my favorite aspects about it.
It shares the same issue with the first book in it's series in that the plot is rather obvious, but again, I think it serves the cozy fantasy vibes. I'm not a huge fan of the amnesia trope as it's really overdone, but I still recommend this book.

Book: The Lavender Haze
Author: June Bates
Series: Standalone
Rating:🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Comfy, sapphic poetry. It was a super short and nice read, but it does contain mentions of familial homophobia. A lot of the poems were more like stylized journal entries though, which was a bit of an odd choice in writing.

Book: With Love, and Sunflowers
Author: Brittany Cline
Series: Standalone
Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
I really enjoyed this collection, and it even inspired some of my own work. The entire thing is able to be read in one sitting and has poems of all parts of a relationship, including the bad.
This is a super underrated book and I hope to see more by this author in the future.

Book: Gothikana
Author: RuNyx
Series: Standalone
Rating:🌕🌕🌕🌕🌖
The writing may not be the best, but I love this book with my entire being. The story is haunting and simply beautiful to the point where I can look past the moments where the writing is a little male gaze-y (mostly in the beginning).
Seeing psychosis in a romance novel means a lot to me as I have family members who are schizophrenic. Having an MC with hallucinations is a nice change of pace.
Please check the trigger warnings for this book as it can be very intense.

This advertisement is for Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree, a high fantasy adventure of first love and secondhand books set prior to the events of New York Times bestseller Legends & Lattes.
The art featured in this image is by Samantha Petrie.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going super great. When she suffers a dread injury during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, the Ravens pack her off for some obligatory and undesired R&R.
The sleepy beach town of Murk is relaxing, but so far from anything resembling excitement or action that she worries she’ll never get back in the game. But then this down-on-her-luck soldier of fortune starts whiling away her many free hours at a beleaguered bookshop and in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor.
We don’t always know what we need, or which small choices change the paths of our lives.
And adventure isn’t so far from Murk as Viv thinks! A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons would like a word.

“If all else fails, I promise to do everything it takes to return to you, Arlo. And when I do, this is where I will be. I always have, and always will. This rock and I, we’re old friends of a sort. Perpetual and everlasting.”
Tumblr media
“And I promise to be here waiting.” I entangle my fingers with his, meeting his tired eyes. He looks so much better than yesterday, but there’s a dullness to him that I cannot deny, like a fading photograph. “Always."
Tumblr media
You guessed it, this is a @crossroadart-seabear appreciation post. Of the course the main fellows are beautiful and longing and wistful, but the market goers are so full of personality and detail they deserve their own ooh and aah moment.
Tumblr media
I especially love the musican, and the trumpet player in the distance. If you look closely, you can see the clocktower that Josse lives in. He's the inventor who made our beloved Floyd.
Also, isn't it so telling how Bosko watches over Arlo and Thatch? Grumpy old bird is good at that.
