I wrote this six years ago. It's still true today. Here it is again.

“Man, I wish someone would write a story about…”

No, stop. Stop. Stop typing that post, and start typing that story instead. Just type that. Then share that. Share the story instead.

“But I’m not a writer!” you might say. Well, maybe that’s true now, because you’re not presently writing. So start writing, then. Look! Now you’re a writer! It’s really that simple.

“But I can’t write!” You were about to type up a Facebook post, presumably using some kind of computer or phone. Don’t want to use those? Grab a pen and some paper. As well as this, you’ve already proven that you have an imagination - you have an idea for a story. You have everything you need to start writing. You can do it.

“But it won’t be any good if I write it!” Y’know, maybe that’s true. But writing, like any skill, is something that gets better with practice.Maybe it’ll take you a while to get that story out of your head. Maybe it’ll take days. Or weeks. Or months. Or years. But you can get it out of your head and onto the page.

“But what if I finish writing the story and it’s terrible?” Want to know a secret? Everybody’s first drafts are awful. They are. It’s incredibly rare for a someone to bash out a story on their first spin of the wheel and think, “Yeah, this is good, I’m done.” A first draft is like a sketch, and the sketch isn’t the painting.

“But what if people don’t like it?” Then that’s their problem. Shakespeare had haters, too. Didn’t stop him from bashing out a million-billion plays.

“But what if nobody cares?” I promise you, somebody will care. Every story, every piece of fiction ever penned, has at least one person out there who thinks of it as their all-time favorite thing. We live in a world where someone’s favorite movie is Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Someone, somewhere, will love the story you’re about to write. Somebody will hold it close to their chest. They’ll read it and re-read it, they’ll write metas about it, they’ll write fanfiction. And they’ll say to their friends, “Hey, have you read this? You should check it out - it’s my favorite.”

“But I don’t want to write it… I just want to be able to read it.” And, y’know, that’s okay. Sometimes those “I wish someone would write a story about…” posts inspire others. But often they don’t, and that means that story idea swimming around in your head stays just that - an idea. Sometimes the only person who can put something into the world is you. Why wait?

Wishing is nothing. Hoping is something. Action is everything. Act. Write. Create. And let me know when it’s done - I’d love to read it.

I find it so sad that people don't have IRL supporters of their obsessions. It actually breaks my heart to think about it.

Like, my biggest supporter is my husband. I wouldn't be anywhere without him. He even supports my OCs/self ships! He supports me writing fanfics and actually reads them when I let him.

I don't know. But my biggest wish is that everyone finds someone in their lives that fully supports their crazy. No matter how crazy it is. I think the creative world would be so much better if people had more supporters.

The best advice i can give any creator is do it before you're good at it, do it BEFORE you're happy, do it while you suck, do it while you're doubting yourself and get stuck the fuck in, because waiting around to be "good enough" is a motherfucking trap of the highest degree. You'll get good along the way and better after every project is complete. Remember, this is the greatest thing you've ever created, and then you'll do something else. You're only ever gonna get better, but not if you stand still.

the thing about "i could do that" is that what people mean is that they can copy the finished product because the work of coming up with something and making it has already been done for them. every little creative decision has already been made and put into creating something, so "doing the same thing" is only doing the work of physically making something. but art doesn't just appear out of thin air. every little decision someone makes is part of the creative process. if you "can just do that" you would be doing it instead of just saying it. because the most essential part of making a piece of art is actually making it. you have to come up with it, decide to make it, and make it, for it to even exist. you can look at someone's works and think that on a technical level you can Do The Same Thing but that's not really true. because the work of unique creative choices for a particular piece you're looking at has already been done. some pieces are hard to make because they're very complex on a technical level, but every single piece that's created requires the essential work of coming up with it, making choices that are unique to you as an artist, and actually making the piece

How to create an atmosphere: Forest

Sight

tall trees with thick canopies of leaves

alternating light coming in through the moving leafs of the trees

ground covered with a mix of grass, ferns, and fallen leaves

wildflowers adding splashes of colour

animals like deer, boars, squirrels, birds

insects like butterflies and bees add movement and life to the scene

Hearing

the air is filled with the melodious songs of birds

gentle rustling of leaves as the wind moves through the trees

constant hum and buzz of insects

the soft crunch of leaves, twigs, and soil while walking through the forest

Touch

the spongy feel and the soft coolness of moss

the rough texture of tree bark

the cooler temperature in the forest

with a gentle breeze that can be felt on your skin

Smell

the smell of fresh grass

the rich, earthy smell of soil and decaying leaves

the scent of fresh leaves, pine needles, and blooming flowers

the smell of the clean, slightly damp scent of water and wet earth from a nearby stream or pond

Taste

the clean taste of fresh air

the taste of sweet and tangy wildberries

the taste of self-picked mushrooms

the taste of edible wildflowers

the taste of a variety of nuts

the taste of wild greens

AI is scraping the whole internet while it learns how to string words together so it can become smart enough to take most of our jobs. it will scrape everything, read books and watch movies and videos and look at digitized forms and pictures and licenses and whatever it can find on the internet and even outside of the internet, it scrapes your work systems it reads your documents and powerpoints and emails. until they find another shiny new toy to sell to each other, the corps will keep AI alive and hungry. the future is unclear and scary and wild. all i have is art and writing and stories and sharing them with you with no motives other than because i love stories and you, a person with a heart and soul that needs art like air, you do too. i will continue to write even if AI eats every word as soon as i type it. and i will still share it with you because i love writing and i love you

Writing Forbidden Romance Tension

They’re in a room full of people but keep looking at each other like they’re the only two there.

The “We shouldn’t be doing this” speech, One character says it, but neither of them makes a move to stop because they so want to keep going.

They act super casual in public, but the tension is real. Every move feels too big.

Their hands are this close to touching, but they both pull back at the last second.

They sneak off to talk or just be alone, somewhere they won’t be caught, and the whole time they’re anxious but can’t stay away.

And yes, I do plan on continuing it! It was giving me some trouble in deciding what direction I want it to go and whose POV i want to focus most, but I think I finally found a direction! I struggle to write anything that is meant to be kinda pointless/ just for fun, so I usually use these AU’s to explore a specific concept, and since I didn’t know if I wanted this to lean more on a funny casual side, or more towards a suspense, almost horror vibe, it really made me fight for it lol

But I got it!! I think!!!! Here, have some Endless Abyss doodles!!!!

Im highly considering making this a proper fanfic and posting it on Ao3, but I think I would first write it all down and then post the chapters weekly or so, just so I can limit myself and don’t spend another year writing it every 2-3 months like I’m doing my current fanfic Locked & Loaded (which I’m not abandoning!!!! If I’m finishing any fanfics it’s that one!!!! I just take my time with it)
