As an editor, I use both original music and music libraries for projects, depending on the project and depending on how much time there is to do the project.

My first series gig as an editor, I split seasons with another editor with whom we both used music provided by the series composer. Sometimes we'd ask for new compositions but at some point we'd dip into the body of work that was already created. One of the outcomes of that arrangement is that we both had this one cut of music we almost always used for a particular kind of sequence. It was simply too perfect to pass up.

Now, while we both did this, we didn't actual know we both did this. The only person who knew, of course, was the producer whose shows we were cutting and who quickly made it clear:

You guys are using this music way to damn much.

Whoops.

So we had to force ourselves into making different choices whenever we thought to use that music again.

We did, by the way.

We found other music. Sometimes we asked for new music that did something different.

We had to bring more effort to bear, more intention to bear, basically.

As I told a friend recently, that one cut of music couldn't possibly have been perfect in so many circumstances. We just thought it was because it came to mind so easily. 

Because it came to mind.

So easily.

And so it became our Go-To cut of music.

By the way, you have to be careful with anything that's your Go-To. Because in some cases, that designation "Go-To" is another way of saying "This is all I could think of."

You see, one of the hazards of working against the clock is that I often reach for and accept first solutions. The first ideas that come to mind. 

Don't get me wrong, a lot of great ideas come to my mind that way.

However.

There's no way to know that for sure without scrutiny. Without, instead of shooting from the hip, actually considering the idea in context.

Apply some of that executive function magic my brain can do.

Recently, I was asked to check out the music library of a company that approached a company I work for about giving them a chance.

I spent a bit of time with their library yesterday, using more descriptive language instead of discrete search terms. For example: "A sad piano and strings theme" that it served up in seconds. The library can also be accessed from inside Premiere Pro and you can upload any sound file for its AI to analyze and then serve up the closest matches in the library.

Don't get me wrong. These are all thoroughly impressive features. I discussed this with another editor who had some concerns and we stepped through how we'd address those.

That's a good thing, by the way. It's in no way being a buzz kill to say I'm not so sure. Because we're definitely at our most intellectually vulnerable once we make up our minds. Once we make up our minds is exactly the moment when someone should be tasked with figuring out—

Okay.

What's gonna screw us?

Not joking there, by the way. We all have blind spots.

Anyway, we didn't take the library on a shakedown cruise. We listened to cross sections of music and explored the interface a bit just to be sure we were trading either up or laterally.

In the end, my vote had nothing to do with the features (although they are tasty).

My vote was, in the absence of anything that would screw us and given a trade of quality that was at least of equal value...

My vote was to switch libraries in order to break our search habits and therefore our choice habits. You see, over time you develop search patterns to get you to a solution as quickly as possible. You also develop preferences within those search solutions. Which means... you're searching a quite smaller population of music cuts than you think.

Now, that's absolutely a me problem. I won't lie. But Creative Me problems have a broad range of solutions among which is this classic: 

Change how you do what you do.

And that's what the new library presents: a change up both in how we search for that one song we're looking for... as well as the kind of songs we'll find and then listen to and then choose. It's a feature not a bug of the creative process that, well...

Okay.

Change is the feature and not a bug of my creative process. It prevents me from locking myself into one choice when there are infinite choices. Were I at the top of a building with tourist binoculars, it would be like forgetting that I can swivel the binoculars 180 degrees to see so much more than if I left it locked in one position looking at only one thing the whole time.

That's what I mean by search habits and choice habits. And why sometimes I've gotta change how I do...

A: Yes, it definitely has a benefit for the engines. Thanks to it, it can save them from becoming victims of scrap, or if something physically harms them in their human form, it comes and treats them because ordinary doctors cannot treat human engines

Okay, as much as I would like some more backstory on Sukuna, Kenjaku, Uraume, Tengen and others from the Heian Era... I also never really felt like... I really wanted it and it wasn't until now watching a video on a movie villain that I realized why.

Sometimes a backstory, let alone a motive isn't necessarily needed as to why a villain does what they do.

Sometimes, it's nice to leave it up to the imagination of the viewer to wonder what could have been. Hell, it could even be more terrifying when little to nothing about their past is revealed because it's like "what if there was never a reason, they're just like that".

And I'm not saying a full backstory would be bad. Depending on how it can fit into the story, it could be a spectacle!

I like backstories, I do. But I also don't mind not having a backstory. Gets me thinking, the gears moving in my head, the creavity flowing.

It's mainly Wesley, Curie, EODA, Jim, and The Timekeeper. TK is a little different though, I'm in LOVE with their design and can easily work it into my lore. I might split tk in two, the silier side for the interp, and the "canon" one for oc work. You can't exactly separate Stanley from the parable (and besides, Jim kinda became the de facto main character.), Mariella is kind of in limbo. The main crew will be getting redesigns gradually and I'm excited to move forward with them!

I've basically got my Stanley down but would like to refine his design a bit more :3

The award of best album of 2024 should go to Namjoon and I'm not being biased. The creavity and originality of his album doesn't exist on the others, plus his brilliant lyrics.

*nods* The irony is that with Tails working with other people, exploring the new places and encountering different levels and types of threats, it expands his ability to experiment with different things. Evolving his creavity and horizons. (Once again, Nine didn't start making portals nor begin terraforming until after he met Sonic. And by extension, the prisms, which allow him to study more closely) That said, I wouldn't mind see more "spur-of-the-moment" creations from him. Or finally getting to test run some of his small personal projects.

I half-heartedly want Mangey being the voice of reason for him. Rascal dropping a speech as best he can with limited vocabulary. (Wasn't he the first of his group who wanted a truce with Thorn?)

Oh yeah he's a wizard too. Man, this kid/j

I wish we could see some of Tails's smaller projects, usually we only get to see the things that are useful for the game he's in, but I lowkey wonder if he ever invented something just to see if he can or for the fun of it? Or something to improve his or other people's everyday life? That'd be really cool! (I guess we kind of saw something like that in Boom. And we would probably get some more in the scu)

Mangey certainly seems like "the heart" of the group, the more sensitive one who just wants everyone to get along ("~Feelings~")

Sails, on the other hand, seemed the one who got the most angry/heartbroken by Sonic's perceived betrayal.

Man I just want them to interact so badly. Those 3 seconds of them staring into each other's eyes as Nine realizes that he is just one of the many alternative versions of someone is just not enough.

I saw some asks talking about Wonder Woman and I gotta agree. Wonder Woman has unfairly reached that fame and all because of the exotic background of an Amazon and Greek roots.

Is one of the reasons why people love her more and compare her to DC other female superheroes or any other powerful female in general, they would still go with Wonder Woman. But what I don’t like is that others should stop copy paste from Greek mythology and the excuse here being “inspired”. Just be creative on your own. For example.

In super Mario, when Rosalina came out she was very liked by the fans more than Peach and Daisy, for me as well. It wasn’t only her design, it wasn’t only her strong female character, it wasn’t only her motherly attitude, the most importantly it was her exotic background. She is a literal tall mummy goddess that owned a freaking galaxy. Is all about the characters background it attracts the attention of many people. And somehow it makes them really attractive as much as powerful they are the more attractive they become in the eyes of others. But the problem is that, Wonder Woman’s background comes from the style of Americans which they ridiculously give their characters and story too much credit, inlogical story, the limitless fantasies, no flaws, no realism, no accurate, mistakes or “Easter eggs” that are unexplainable, the timeline mess. And all of that it makes the character ridiculously powerful. And no it’s not the same with Rosalina because Rosalina is from a video game that has limited fantasy and explainable reasons, because it’s a Japanese style, Asians aren’t called smart for a reason aren’t they?? And no is not because of the math, but they have solving problem skills, their style somehow makes more sense that Americans who can’t just stop with the powerful mess. In One Piece at least they created their own characters and being inspired by the Amazons and of course they would call the island Amazon because as soon as they’re only female warriors that word immediately pops into your head.

But the mixing the Greek mythology and mixing with the American style is just fucked up. It’s indeed abusive, they just use the background and the root then they go with the rest to give all that credit and is fucked up.

Wonder woman’s background was being served in a silver plate to her creator then the rest of the designers just gave her more. Then mixing timelines Ancient Greek woman fighting the Ancient Greek god war to save humanity? Left her royalty life as the heir to the throne because the power of the friendship and defeated Ares? In modern Germany? Like, where is the creavity here? Creativity is being sure to create everything on your own being inspired or not, find good logical reasons so fix the issues and make is as realistic and accurate as possible.

The moral of the story? Being creative doesn’t matter just copy paste and unfairly that character is given more fame.

Pretty much this! American creators made their own "parthenon" by taking things from other cultures instead of establishing something of their own.

Japanese anime is popular because the people create stories inspired often by their culture and myths and give them a modern twist. Some are cliché some are flawed but at least they try to be uniquely creative.

How to unlock your creavity, a reminder to one’s self:

I want to track my progress, bit by bit, and witness my growth over time. Some may say my drive for improvement is overly ambitious, but for me, it’s rooted in hope…

A hope to finally succeed and, perhaps more deeply, a desire to prove to my parents that my decision to pursue art full-time was the right one. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings me closer to realising both my dreams and my belief in the path I’ve chosen

Again, I am in my first year…

My teacher recommended me this book, It’s book about animation, by Shamaus Culhane, he became the lead designer for Snow White. Fun fact: He was on the verge of being fired in his earlier years

Honestly… It’s inspiring to look back and see how people in the past, with far less technology than we have today, still found ingenious ways to solve complex problems. It’s comforting to realise that, with time these struggles and uncertainties, that I’m facing now, will begin to face, again with due time…

This reminds me of how artists in earlier times used pinholes to aid in their painting…a simple yet brilliant tool! Honestly, reinforces the idea how references are so important!

The author begins by describing how their animation work seemed to occur in two distinct stages.

The first stage was a “daydream” phase characterised by a burst of energy where the artist avoided contemplation, allowing their subconscious mind to take over! (Introspection was absent during this part of the process)

The second stage was more deliberate, involving conscious thought and analysis, where the artist took time to reflect on the drawing and the emotions it conveyed.

The author references a specific book, which discusses the functions of the brain and the idea that the right side is more creative, while the left side is more analytical.

We can see it through how he highlights the quote from the book he read, stating that the brain works best when daydreaming, hinting at the value of the right hemisphere in the creative process.

This section concludes by illustrating the practical results of this theory, showing a set of drawings that progressively improve within a short span of time. These drawings exemplify how activating the right side of the brain leads to creative breakthroughs!

Again, I also do think Pomodoro technique works wonders!

1a) Depending on the Tommy his thinking would vary probably. The Tommy I'm writing for my latest fic thinks way too much and gets skrunkly while afn!Tommy really just wouldn't think enough. He tries but he's just not very good at it.

1b) I don't think! I actually only figured it out semi recently but there really isn't much going in within this skull. I have more of a constant internal monologue than something I'd call an actual thought. Its always yapping about whatever I like and I just tune into it.

Words just kinda automatically tumble out of me whenever I speak / write and I often just act before sitting down and debating what to do. I am very much just ants personified which is great because they're super cool insects.

2a) I think I've heard of it? Can't say the news I've heard has been good though. I mostly just saw the drama of them using AI art and defending it as well as ripping models from pokemon and barely changing them iirc.

2b) Nah I've never played it! It seemed cool but the AI stuff put a bad taste in my mouth and I wouldn't want to give them money to support that. I'm also more into management games, I have over 1000 hours in some of them.

3) If I didn't have to interact with the actual characters in my fic then I think I'd go for either AFN or Four Seasons. If I did have to actually meet them then I'd go for Deepest Ocean but stay far, farrr away from the sea!
