the response to Oppenheimer was good but Barbie's bad because of white feminism as if Oppenheimer wasn't humanizing the man who was responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb. Responsible for so much suffering. As if some of the people behind the Oppenheimer movie aren't also openly endorsing the Palestinian genocide.
Imagine if someone made a movie like that about Osama Bin Laden and told Americans it was ok because he was a complex human. Suddenly it would be evil to humanize someone like that.
I like Barbie. I don't think it's the pinnacle of feminism but I don't think it has to be and I hate the people who use that as an excuse to put it down (especially in comparison to movies like Oppenheimer).
I literally had to deal with people using lily gladstone's nom to rejoice about margot robbie's snub and praising "give it back to the indians" Oppenheimer in the same breath.
And the worst part is that some of those people are nothing but cinema lovers who get too easily blinded by the famous artsy director's name on the poster.
Because Oppenheimer is ✨️art✨️ and is ✨️complex✨️ while Barbie is popular and fun so suddenly all its flaws are highlighted because it lacks the cinematic pretentiousness of other nominees that also have so much issues with their message

The Barbie movie hits you in waves
A lot of us have been that girl who comes to hate Barbie, and like America there comes a point where you see the faults but love the idea of Barbie and what she can be but also despair because no it's not that easy its a dream Barbieland is a dreamland and is it not enough to just be nothing more than ordinary because sometimes thats enough.
But sometimes it isn't. Sometimes that isn't enough and the world is set up to hold you back and Barbieland is a dreamland like you childhood but as soon as you hit adulthood that dreamland falls apart and it hurts like hell. Change hurts like hell and its devestating fighting for what is right and the Kens deserve better just like women deserve better and that happens slowly and that is frustrating and its not a happy ending but its not a sad ending because life isn't fully sad or happy and it doesn't end because there will always be another little girl

I don’t usually make posts like this, but I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-intellectual junk lately, and I really think we need to put the word “pretentious” up on a shelf until people learn what it actually means.
It doesn’t describe someone who likes artsy-fartsy deep meaning media. People who are pretentious are fake. They’re posers trying to be sophisticated and unique, not like other girls. They pretend to only like stuff they think will make them sound cool when they talk about it. They want to act like they know something you don’t, and they want attention for it.
By definition, if you genuinely enjoy something, you can’t be pretentious. If it resonates with you, and you analyze it, and you don’t care what people think, that’s the polar opposite, actually. If you love obscure experimental prog music, if you watch underground high concept indie films through English teacher eyes, if you spend hours in a modern art museum reading each piece as a vessel for storytelling, if your backpack’s full of poetry books that inspire you, if you play underrated games that were someone’s passion project, if you have an interest in studying the classics or the masters, you are not pretentious.
Of course, some people just don’t like some stuff, and that’s fine, but that’s not what this is about. Don’t let anti-intellectuals shame you for enjoying things just because your interests are inaccessible to them, because they refuse to be brave and put effort into critical thinking. You’re not stuck up for refusing to overlook the craft of artists.

me: it kind of annoys me that the new Barbie trailer claims Barbie was the first non-baby doll for children. here are some examples of ancient lady dolls, presented in a Ha Ha Funney tone
everyone in the notes: OH MY GOD JESUS CHRIST IT’S JUST A BARBIE MOVIE CALM DOWN GET A JOB NOBODY’S GOING TO BELIEVE IT ANYWAY!!!!! YOU’RE DUMB AND AWFUL AND NO-ONE CARES
(a bunch of other people in the notes: it’s true though/she was the most popular so she’s the only one that counts/wait there were adult-shaped dolls before Barbie? where?)

No, "I'm Just Ken" did NOT "miss the point" of the movie, and people who liked it and are also glad that it won also did not MiSs ThE PoiNt.
Yeah there's something to be said about a song (primarily) centered around men and toxic-masculinity about women blahblah too tired to write all this out now
But if Barbie really was supposed to be "all about women" and "only for women" or whatever then why have Ken in it at all? Why have him be a fun character to watch and have a whole entire character arc about finding who he is outside of a relationship and being Barbie's walking accessory?
I'm pretty sure the actors and Greta herself have stated that Ken and his journey is a great part of the film and I don't think they would speak to positively about the attention Ken was getting if they disapproved it.

Not to say something so capitalist as a socialist, but I kind of don't care if the Barbie movie is actually some big ploy to sell more barbies, its been so much fun to see people excited about something that is at its core is made for girls enjoyment, for a traditionally feminine interest to be celebrated not ridiculed. Also at least its propaganda to buy dolls not like military propaganda or something

im pretty sure this is not a popular opinion which is why i havent said it, but its been on my mind for months now so fuck it, i guess.
you know that post, the one about the barbie movie and margot robbie talking about barbie being a doll with no reproductive organs and sexual desire, and a lot of tumblr users just like, celebrating this as a win for asexuality?
i hate that post. a lot. like a lot a lot.
because while i dont think margot robbies conclusion is wrong (shes a doll), i think calling barbie asexual is inaccurate and it makes me, an ace person, uncomfortable.
like i dont think its a purposeful link, but that comparison very much implies that sexuality and sexual desire is tied to having reproductive organs, which uh no, thats not how that works and i really dislike that implication. idk about you, but i dont like tying my queerness to my biology.
that link is also one that rings of those who presume that there is a universal normative experience, which is also true of the movie itself, see jessie genders video on that. there are many people in the world who have what would be considered atypical reproductive organs and plenty whose reproductive organs can be considered not-working like those who have gone through the menopause, and they are not all ace.
its also just reductive as to what asexuality in general. margot robbies quote was specifically that barbie didnt feel sexual desire, and funnily enough, sexual desire =/= sexual attraction. while i, myself, be a sex-repulsed ace, there are plenty of horny aces who do the fuck. ive already mentioned the fact that im opposed to linking my queerness to biology, and honestly that part only made me more uncomfortable after the movie ended on "im here to see my gynecologist".
also just, barbie is a plastic doll. like thats how she starts in the movie itself. shes not asexual, shes a doll. and idk dude, theres just a part of me that is deeply uncomfortable with tying asexuality with a doll.
like imo, this just isnt the win for asexuality people were treating it as. we can do better than this.
especially considering the way queerness was handled in the film, but again, go watch jessie genders video on it, its better presented than my rambling post
