Welcome to the setting of folk fantasy, a place meant to be many storytellers' playground. The worlds and lands within them are set up in such a way to facilitate nearly any setting within them, whether you are the kind to go by the book or giddily play with its insides or even reside someplace in between this world is hopefully for you.
The rules of gods
1: Once dead, a god cannot live again as that is the price of such power.
(their was once a way to circumvent this but 2 Gods destroyed it and cast its pieces into the fathom)
2: Their power comes from belief.
Extra: their are four main kinds of deities.
-created: these are the gods that manafest due to mass belief in stories of powerful beings. Their power and temperament very wildly dependent on the stories that make them.
-The borne: usually the offspring of other gods these have always had their power
-forces of nature: these have some overlap with previous category but are often things that have existed for longer and are simply venerated as gods. These are some of the most potent but are also hard to reason with.
-ascended: these gods were once mortal and through their deeds and others beliefs they have gained their position. They are often the most flexible with the ability to choose Domains and even take on new ones at their whim. Though many prefer to stick with 2 or 3, some have been known to manage many more.
The rules of magic
1: magic is unpredictable and is the absence of nature's rules and consistencies, one can be the best of casters since creation and do everything right but still have a spell become horrid and turn upon its so-called master. This is why many prefer a simple sword or a big stick.
2: iron nullifies it. This is why it hurts Fey. As a result the stuff is artificially rare and highly coveted. Most metal items without specific traits to say otherwise will be made out of a non ferromagnetic alternative called Salk steel. The only source of magic to ignore this is fathom magic as it has yet to bend to the laws of this reality leading to it being the most unpredictable.
3: not a rule but instead an observation. In most cases the catalyst to turning magic into a spell or effect is intent. It's theorized that this is why magic can be docile till a thinking being is near.
P.S. The four kinds and their respective knowledge are: fathom/rune, aka unwoven under knowledge (Demonica). Given, under knowledge (Religion). Errant, under knowledge (Arcana). The oldest magics, under knowledge (Esoterica).
Fun bits of genre set dressing
it is believed that the universe and all in it wants to be lazy and balanced. The balance of a body and soul is a mind created through their union. This is why the soulless seek the sane and the bodiless seek to possess others
Shadows and reflections while linked to people are separate entities. the shadow is the hidden parts of someone and reflections are the only thing keeping you from entering the reflected world through its doors(silver backed mirrors)
Demons
In this setting demon is short for dimension traveler but most Don't get to finish introducing themselves as such before natives start freaking out due to the fact that they are often weird and wild appearances. The reason for this is that while they say they come from “other dimensions” they actually mean other realities entirely. They most often seep into these worlds from holes to the unwoven tapestry aka the fathom, the walkways between realities that are without reason and rules.
Then theirs..
The cycles of the cicada
This is a ritual cast in the 7th era that results in the fact that all dead not properly consecrated will reanimate every 3 cycles of the cicada, aka every 51 years. It is this and two other reasons why the 7th of anything is now believed to be unlucky.
As for areas there are 3 planes, each linked to one of the three aspects of being. those being, Materium plane of body, dream lands plane of mind, and Muldigulv plane of soul.
Each have their own worlds and realms within writen to be little pockets of the defined surrounded by empty space for writers to do with what they please.
If anyone has questions, feel free to ask, as this is just the basics needed to understand everything else.

Unwilling to make any firm statements on whether this is good or bad but there sure are a lot of mid range & older millennials who talk and move like video game characters
#hard to describe what im talking about without physically miming out an example but i had a customer the other day#who had idle animations. like she wasn't fidgeting she just had a specific set of movements she did when she was not talking or walking#and she ended interactions like an rpg companion.#and this isn't even touching on the number of men i meet who talk exactly like nathan drake

this post made me remember this game, it's been so long that I almost forgot about it!

they should make spore again but an mmorpg this time. it would be a total fucking disaster but it would be so funny. i think I should be allowed to go to my friends planet and abduct them from creature stage.
#it wasn't super great because they had to make it so peoples computers wouldn't explode#but it was a thing!#darkspore was a multiplayer rpg where you could fight enemies with a group of people with their own custom spore creations#you were limited to the set body type templates mind you but you could stick everything wherever you wanted and change the sizes#like in the OG spore#but it played like diablo#but it def would be neat to see them revisit it as a mmorpg

Ten inessential worldbuilding features for local communities in your fantasy RPG:
A grievance or conflict of interest with a neighbouring community which the community's members feel much more strongly about than the issue's magnitude really warrants
A substance or commodity important to everyday life with no local source, and the complicated and inconvenient arrangement the community has made to obtain it from outside sources
A local practice or custom whose original motivation has been rendered obsolete by changing circumstances, and which is now carried forward out of tradition
Something that's technically illegal, but everyone does it on the sly anyway, with enforcement of its illegality being reserved for people the community's leaders want to mess with for unrelated reasons
An obscure piece of trivia or local history which the community's members regard as obvious and widely known, to the extent of treating outsiders with contempt for revealing their ignorance of it
Some undertaking or realm of achievement in which the community isn't particularly exceptional, but which the community's members believe they're the best around at as a point of civic pride
A mostly harmless thing that nobody talks about because its existence or some facet of its historical context is regarded as an embarrassment to the community
A particular prank that's become traditional to play on visitors to the community, and which occasionally gets taken further than is strictly appropriate
A specific area of the setting's history where what the community's members insist really happened is wildly at odds with the accepted version of events
A genuinely dangerous circumstance that everyone treats with casual disregard because it's always been there, and only a damn fool would actually get hurt by it anyway

I feel like they are the type of mf to stalk you in game bruh.
Like imagine Tim playing dress to impress just to vote you a 5 star no matter if your fits are trash lol. (Hell all of them might do it)
Or maybe your playing some sort of RPG game, and you said to your in game friends about how you wanted a skin and BOOM you immediately got it first try when you gacha lol. (Tim)
— masterlist !
as much as i love writing yandere angst, i always border on the softer spectrum of it, so when it comes to interpreting your life post-kidnapping: i'll say that the family is a bit more lenient (as if it's enough to make you feel a semblance of freedom) to you when it comes to pastimes like gaming as long as you're always being monitored, especially in online games...
that translates to you being stalked at every opportunity every time you use your bugged phone...
they're always breathing down your neck, so you think you have privacy even when playing alone? when heaven forbid the surrounding cameras all over your room, all set-up by tim and his invasive ass, just so he could have constant surveillance over every movement or hobby of yours?
there's eyes on you all the time, but you'd never expect that it's to the point that they'll join all the games you play if it means spending some "bonding" time with you whenever you push them away from physically being in the same room as you.
so if it means playing lousy obbies in roblox, or even "girly" games like dress to impress, for hours, then they'll join you without moment's hesitation. you'll be shocked at just how well tim and damian style their clothes, but nobody's beating steph and cass at their game. and despite you feeling down in the dumps at the times you feel inferior towards them and their expertise, or just how well each of them communicating with each other, and you, feeling out of place everytime.
it's an undeniable fact that it's you always winning and ranking first place.
they'll always lower themselves, or won't even try so you'd always be in the spotlight even if you ask them to play fairly.
oh, by the way, never ask any one of them to duo with you. they automatically see it as you crowning one of them as your favorite— you don't want to see another fight ensue just because you voted one of their fits better than the other.
you could be shit at the obbies, constantly missing your jumps and close to snapping your device in half— then suddenly you have the game passes to skip certain levels. suddenly, you have an entire cheer team waiting with baited breaths every time you finish a jump, only to cheer and celebrate once you finish a particularly hard level.
oh, you're in a shitty dress to impress server with unfair voting? don't worry, barbara's faster behind the scenes, finding pro servers for you to join in. the entire family's already at your beck and call (even if you've never asked them in the first place) every time you mouth a complaint, each statement of yours taken more seriously than the missions they have every night as vigilantes.
and once bruce catches the news that you want robux just to buy the VIP and custom makeup game pass for dress to impress, or literally any games? god, he's like your mr. salt to you, his sweet veruca, willing to buy the entire game, hell, even the gaming companies you play on.
just, you know, if you don't want them showing their affection directly, then they'll do so by servicing you through the games you play.
any game currency is immediately bought by bruce, all transferred to your account, no matter how expensive it is because he sees it's what makes you happy, watching you burn off all the money on your avatar's design, or certain gacha characters you're fond of, with your eyes staring at the screen in awe with no worries about becoming broke.
it just makes him want to... hold you like you're a little kid spoiled by their father who loves them so much, who should've loved them from the start.
your siblings have an unspoken competition on who could grind on your account the most while you're afk, just so they could see your meek smile plastered on your adorable face seeing that you have the proper resources on your inventory.
you know, it makes them feel useful to you. it makes dick feel like the dependable older brother who's the first one you approach whenever you need him to play for you whilst you go to the bathroom. tim even learns every game mechanic in parkour games so he could assist you during the moments you struggle.
as cute as you are on his computer screen in one of the cameras surveying your room, pouting as you look at the screen at another failed level, tim wants to be as every bit your favorite, the guy you see as the geeky nerd in the family so he'll be the only one you approach to help you out (you don't even have to ask him, his eyes are always on you).
jason's good at point and shoot games, he gives you oddly realistic tips too so you could aim right at players and eventually secure your spot. it makes him huff with joy whenever you win competitive games 'cause you always jump and cheer, forgetting the boundaries you've set with personal space, just to thank him with a hug and your rare grins that feeds the greedy parts of him only wanting to see your smile all for himself.
so, really, everything's fine with them, as long as it doesn't disrupt your quality time with your family in real time and you don't hurt yourself over losing that they're happy you're enjoying. as long as you're not pushing them away and not-so eagerly accepting their online presence, then maybe you could find an actual routine to enjoy every time you open your phone to play a game.
maybe you'll learn to smile or laugh with them too when you're all in the same room playing together.
maybe, just maybe.

So Disco Elysium is the only game you've ever really liked
I get it! It's a phenomenal game with superb art and writing, and its themes are consistent and deeply explored. It sets a high bar for video games. But there are other really, really fantastic games out there. This is a list that is 100% my own taste of things that aren't necessarily similar, other than the fact that they're really fucking good. (A lot of these are on sale for the Steam Summer Sale until July 11 2024!)
In Stars and Time

In Stars and Time is a time loop game where you play as Siffrin, the rogue of a party at the end of their quest to save the day by defeating the King, who is freezing everybody in time! But something is wrong: every time you die, you loop back to the day before you fight the King. You're the only one who remembers the loops, so it's up to you to figure out why it's happening, and how to break out.
In Stars and Time is a heart-wrenching dive into mental health, friendship, and love. It's about feeling alone, and how awful it is when the people who love you don't notice (and how awful it is when they do). It's about falling deeper and deeper into your worst self and your worst tendencies, and how to come back from it.
The creator also did one of my favorite Disco Elysium comics ever, which is only tangentially relevant but worth mentioning.
Roadwarden

In Roadwarden, you play as the titular Roadwarden for an undeveloped and "wild" part of the kingdom. Monsters roam the forests and roads, and it's your job to keep people safe. On paper, anyway. Your real mission is to find out what is of value in the area, and how to take it from its people. How well you perform this task is up to you. It's an oldschool text-based RPG, and I take a lot of notes by hand when I play.
Roadwarden explores exploitation and industrialization by making you look in the face of your potential victims. You can only learn what your bosses want you to report on by getting close to the residents, after all. There are mysteries to be solved, secrets to be gathered, and hearts to win.
The Longing

The Longing is an adventure-idle game where you play as the solitary servant of a sleeping king. Your task is to wait for him, for four hundred days. Time in the game passes in realtime (for the most part). There are caves to explore, books to be read, and drawings to make.
The Longing is about loneliness and depression. It's about whether or not you decide to stay in that hole, and if you do, what you do with yourself while you're there. Maybe you'll wander. Maybe you'll stare at a wall. Maybe you'll just sleep until it's all over.
Papers, Please

Papers, Please casts you as a newly hired customs officer in a country that is rapidly tightening its borders as its fascist government tightens its fist. This game is stressful. Sometimes you intend to help out the revolutionaries when they asked, but then you got so stressed out trying to make your quota so you can feed your family and pay your bills that you didn't notice the name of the person they were hoping to contact while going through their papers. Sometimes someone puts a bomb in front of you and expects you to defuse it. Sometimes someone suggests you steal people's passports so you can get your family out, and with the horror you see daily, the idea tempts you more than you'd like.
Papers, Please is all about hard choices and testing your moral fortitude. Everything you do has consequences. Being a good person in this game is hardly ever rewarded, but not in a way that feels overly cynical. Papers, Please asks you what kind of person you want to be and what you're willing to sacrifice to get there.
The Return of the Obra Dinn

From the creator of Papers, Please, The Return of the Obra Dinn is a game where you play as an insurance investigator for the East India Trading Company. The ship the Obra Dinn has just floated back into port, its entire crew missing or dead. It's your job to figure out what happened aboard the vessel. For insurance reasons.
I don't know how to go into the themes of this too deeply without giving away too much, but the mechanics of the game itself make the game worth playing. You have a magic stopwatch that allows you to go back to the moment of a person's death, allowing you to try and figure out who (or what) killed them, and how. And the soundtrack is extremely good.
Outer Wilds
In Outer Wilds you play as an unnamed alien, and it's your first day going to space! Your planet's space program is pretty new still, so there's still lots to explore and discover on the planets within your system. There are ancient ruins from a mysterious race that once lived in your system, long before your species began to record history. Why were they here? Where did they go? How are they connected to the weird thing that keeps happening to you?
The fun of Outer Wilds is in the discovery and answering your own questions. The game never tells you where to go, and it never outright tells you anything. There are clues scattered through the system, and it's up to you to put them together and figure out your next steps. It's about the way that life always goes on, no matter what, even when it seems like the end of everything, forever. I'd recommend NOT reading anything else about this game. Just go play it. Seriously, the less you know, the more fun this is.
If on a Winter's Night, Four Travelers

In If on a Winter's Night, Four Travelers, you explore the circumstances of the deaths of four individuals.
This is a short one that took me about two and a half hours to play. If for no other reason, play it for the stunning pixel art. The game explores sexism, racism, and homophobia in the Victorian era and leans heavily into horror themes. Best of all: it's completely free!
Pentiment

Pentiment takes you to the 16th century, where you take the role of Andreas Maler, a journeyman artist working on his masterwork in the scriptorium of an abbey. When someone is murdered, Andreas takes responsibility for finding the culprit.
The game is set over 20~ years and you get to watch how Andreas' actions affect the village in various ways (who's alive the next time you come by, have people gotten married and had children...). It's an exploration of how the past affects the future, and what parts of that past we choose to keep or discard. It has beautiful art, and fans of both Disco and Pentiment often compare them.

Other games you might wanna check out
Night in the Woods, Dredge, Oxenfree, A House of Many Doors, Inscryption, Slay the Princess, Citizen Sleeper, Chants of Sennar, Loop Hero, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, The Pale Beyond, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, Elsinore, Her Story, Before Your Eyes, Pathologic (not delved into above because the venn diagram of Pathologic fans and Disco fans is basically a circle)
#disco elysium#pentiment#outer wilds#in stars and time#roadwarden#if on a winters night four travelers#papers please#the return of the obra dinn#the longing#video games#hoping so badly there are no glaring errors in this#made this because i have spoken to many people who Dont Play video games but liked disco
