Ongoing Series - Thai

Jack & Joker (Thai Mon IQIYI) ep 3 of 12 - I don’t have a lot to say except that the plot is somewhat predictable but the show is still very engaging. War is fantastic. I’m enjoying it a hell of a lot.

Monster Next Door (Thai Thurs Gaga ) ep 10 of 12 - The second leads are getting better in this one. I understand where they are coming from, which makes their conflict so much more understandably painful, and honest to a friends2lovers trope. The main couple is kinda standard college relationship drama, but they are cuties.  

Kidnap (Fri YT) ep 4 of 12 - How is Ohm so damn gorgeous? Meanwhile, babies’ first argument. And it’s sponge bath time. Q has got to be wondering if Min is as meticulous with all kinds of care and attention to detail all......the......time. Somebody here in the hellhole said something about this being "the most BL to ever BL." And I think they’re right. At least right now. Although, watch out, we got us a new contender from the east.

I Saw You in My Dream (Weds Gaga) ep 11 of 12 - I do love the continuation of the perversion, in a good way, of the punishment trope from last week's episode. Oh, has the show finally remembered its title? NO SINGING. 

Addicted Heroin (Thai Tues WeTV) ep 7 of 10 - More kidnapping and an attack and now there’s a girl involved and somebody’s going to China and I don’t understand anything! And I don’t really care. Is this how the actual book originally went? Because it’s wild. Also TOO MANY of flashbacks. I guess they got a bit of a boyfriend era, and the claiming during the water fight was cute, but otherwise...... meh

Love Sick 2024 (Thai Sun iQIYI) ep 2 of 15 - One shouldn’t make comparisons, of course, but all I can think about is how amazing Captain was as Noh in the original series. Thus this show is mostly just making me want to rewatch the original. It’d be an interesting twist to have Aim be queer instead of a damaged cool girl slut. Was the helmet hand letting go a foreshadow of the iconic bookstore hands letting go? Also, I gotta say for the second episode of a series there are already too many flashbacks. Why are they using filler when they have so much content crammed into so few (comparable) episodes for a series? It’s annoying. Stop it.

Live in Love (Sun Gaga) ep 4 of 5 - This show has some interesting, if heavy handed, things to say about shipping and trolling, but also predatory/proprietary female behavior. It’s fascinating to see it tackled head on, if handled in a profoundly clumsy manner. I’m not sure how I feel about it. That said, most of this episode was actually an advertisement for a resort in Phuket. 

Bad Guy My Boss (Thai Sun Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - I'm getting What's Wrong with Secretary Kim? vibes from this show. Only this is WAY more bullying. It’s very old-fashioned 90’s billionaire romance novel only gay. It’s never a good sign when I’m watching two boys kiss and I really want one of them to just bite the other ones lip off instead.

Battle of the Writers (Sun YT) ep 9 of 12 - No ep this week.

Sugar Dog Life (Japan Sun grey) ep 8 of 10 - Gosh it’s so frikin adorable. Baby got sick. He has SUCH A CRUSH. And such a courageous little confession! Yay! Can’t wait for next week. 

Teenager Judge (Vietnam Sat YouTube) ep 1 - sure, yes this is, in fact, just Ba Vinh doing his thing with pretty boys again. And yet...... There is a REASON this leapt into the standings guns blazing. So it’s high school set but it's stepbrothers trope. (My, aren’t we popular this year?) I know, but I NEVER get tired of this trope. We got us Bach (BV's sullen tsundere) and Dat (babygirl meets bully). It’s GREAT how the brothers' dynamic is entirely different at school than when they're at home. My ear isn’t trained for Vietnamese, but I think Dat is using different pronouns depending on his location (his personality entirely shifts when he’s at school). I’m not sold on the Bach character, although I always trust BV to serve in the end (at least we know the kisses will be good), but Dat is utterly in love, a touch spicy, and reasonably complex. The surrounding cast is good too, my favorite pretty boy is there playing top dog (woof), and one of the besties is out gay (YAY!). The plot of the show is...... well...... absent. Nothing happened. But if we are aiming for Love Sick slice of life style BL, I'm game. Subs are appropriately terrible and confusing. But I like it A FUCK TON so far, so I’m gonna keep it in rotation. Nice to have Vietnam back in play. What a shocker.

2024 has been a year of upsets.

Love is Like a Poison AKA Doku Koi: Doku mo Sugireba Koi to Naru (Japan Tues Netflix?) 3 of 10 eps - I weirdly enjoyed the farcical music and the utter absurdity of the court case. I also liked how it highlighted what a good team these two are. Frankly I don’t mind a bit of an antihero sleazy lawyer + conman, it's engaging. I’m getting wholesome out of Thailand. I don’t really need it from Japan at the moment. Also I don’t believe for one second our conman actually is serious about the relationship. Conmen gonna con. I'm reminded of the scorpion and the frog fable.

First Note Of Love (Taiwan Mon Gaga) ep 8 of 12 - I love Orca so much. I do not love the autotuned version of Orca, but I knew what I was in for with this particular show, it's in the title after all. I did laugh a whole lot when Laing used kha. Hon, I don't think that word means what you think it means......

The On1y One (Taiwan Thurs Gaga) eps 11-12fin - I never thought I’d say this, but the pacing was off in the penultimate episode. Taiwan, and its chronic misuse of flashbacks strikes again. That said we eventually got a "lock in" trope and Wang being the biggest little flirt shit in the cafe OMG!!! Of course, you shouldn’t use a girl to torment your bf, but it was so well done, I can’t really complain. Meanwhile, teacher kisses. And now I understand exactly why they’re present in this narrative. Clever. Bummer of a burden on that ending though. I cannot see how they’ll manage to stick this landing. [That was ep 11]

AND NOW EP 12 - doomey doomey doom

Not the water bottle trope! Argh the teenage lust of it all. Just stop it. Wang is so smart he knows exactly how bad he has to be to leave the class. And his bf certainly knows that too. And......

So that was not an ending and I’m not happy about it and no one is surprised. Even I’m not surprised. I’m just disappointed. Even tho I suspected this was where we were headed I'm disappointed. That’s it. That’s all I got. How do I review something that was such a crushing let down?

Conclusion:

Based on a Mou Mou novel + the Your Name Engraved Herein team, this is old-school coming of age BL and it was bloody fantastic. Tsundere seme to beat all tsundere (smartest + tallest + bestest at everything but people) meets socially-ept cutie smart-ass uke. They're living together by end of ep 1 and start kissing by end of ep 2. A stellar tense slow burn stepbrothers trope that ate my life and than just belly-flopped the finale. What I'm left with is epic levels of disappointment and well...... at least nobody died? My standard "fatally flawed" rating for any BL is 4/10 so I guess that’s what I’m giving it. 

Before you ask me for the stats: Taiwan does not have a history of second seasons. I went ahead and ran the numbers and the odds are certainly not in our favor. I put the chances at 2%.

Yes, I contemplated a revenge rating of 2/10 but even I'm not that mean.

It's airing but...

The Hidden Moon (Sat WeTV) ep 1 of 10 - This is a supernatural romance (my ghost boyfriend trope) by Violet Rain (I Feel You Linger). A man is hired to write an article about an old mansion in Chiang Mai being converted into a café. He sees the ghosts of people who died at the mansion, falls in love with one of them. Was substantially recast. I loved IFYLITA except the ending so I think I'll let this one run it's course you can tell me if it's work tracking down... if they managed to land it. I have my doubts.

In Case You Missed It

Falling For My Boss is vertical format (nash) short from Korean BL about a happy-go-unlucky man who keeps losing his flower shop business because of romantically misbehaving employees (apparently it's a thing). When his best employee brings in a new boy he's worried she's falling for him, but it turns out it's his own heart on the line. He a clueless softy and The Boy is a lost broken sweetheart, making this a gentle little snippet of a show. There's a baby linguistic negotiation, some hung slinging, awkward handholds, and everyone is very pretty. For me the absence of kisses and the vertical format were more annoying than the length, which felt fine but many viewers will find too short. I enjoyed the 30 minutes of cute. All of which makes this a solid 7/10 from me. It was originally only available on this one ap in very short form with ads so I wasn't gonna bother. Then some kind soul cut it together without ads and stuck it up for download. Say thank you.

Happy of the End (Japan Gaga) - Completed its run. A boy is disowned for being gay, dumped by his boyfriend, and ends up in a dysfunctional co-dependant relationship with his would-be kidnapper. We were due for another messy JBL and it's exactly as expected. I do not like it at all and DNFed. Gossip round the hellhole is that was a solid decision.

10/10 Eccentric Romance (Korea ????) 12 eps - Silkwood’s 2nd Thai/Korean colab, that has been in production since 2022 which is a LONG time in the BL world. I'm worried but I like the concept: friends of 10 years who’ve been hiding feelings for each other enter the same university. Plus MURDER.

10/10 Gangster and His Boyfriend (Korea ????) 8 eps? - Kim Dong Bin (famous trainee & idol reality competitor, yeah that happens) stars as a fallen idol who unexpectedly becomes entangled in a gangster family. Discovers that his friend’s father is responsible for the murder of his entire family years ago. I don't know much about this one, neither does anyone else and I'm not sure where I got that release date so……

10/21 Love in the Big City (Korea ????) 8 eps - Adaptation of Booker-nominated famous coming of age novel of the same title by Park Sang-Young. Cynical yet fun loving student writer Young pinballs from home, to class, to Tinder matches. He and Jaehee, his female besie and roommate, frequent nearby bars where they push away their worries about life, love, and money with soju. As time passes Jaehee settles down and leaves Young to face his problems on his own. Young finding comfort in the arms of the series of men, including one whose handsomeness is matched by his coldness and another who might be the great love of his life. Not really BL. Stars Kim Go-eun (The King: Eternal Monarch), Noh Sang-hyun, and Nam Yoon Su (The King’s Affection). This already released as a movie and isn't very well regarded, this date is supposedly an international release as a series. I'm wary of it being BL.

Like… Yuu is technically all alone here. Lilia is fae. Yuu is obviously older but like. A free child is a free child. 🤷‍♀️👀💀”

So now Lilia is trying to bring Yuu into the family and telling Yuu that Silver is now Yuu’s BROTHER and Yuu is like “NO. THAT’S THE LOML.” And now Yuu and Lilia are fighting for a completely DIFFERENT reason because Lilia is now determined to take in this poor child that had to SELL THEIR KIDNEY TO AFFORD FOOD WHEN THEY FIRST GOT TO TWISTED WONDERLAND DEAR SEVENS?! while Yuu is screeching that LILIA CAN TAKE CAN CARE OF YUU WHEN YUU MARRIES INTO THE FAMILY BACK OFF BATMAN!!!!

Digimon Data Squad (Savers) - Episode 35

This episode just pissed me off. Why are they acting like Yoshi and Rosemon don't exist? Why couldn't she contribute to the fight with Tohma or at least help out with Ikuto?? Another female Digimon character relegated to second tier 😒Sometimes it's like they forgot to write her into the episode.

The show also continues to ruin Tohma/Gaomon's characters with Tohma now smiling about Kurata's evil plans? I'm holding out hope that this is some grand scheme, but if that was the case Tohma wouldn't have attempted to kill Ikuto/Falcomon. -sigh- this is just so stupid...

AND ANOTHER THING (lol). I think Masaru kinda turned on Tohma too fast too. He barely stopped to question if Tohma was brainwashed or under some spell or something before he was like "Die!!" You'd think with a former friend you'd want to at least capture and question them, but I guess Masaru's just rage boy now.

Notes:

Kurata wants to "be the king of both worlds" 😒 sooo original. And Tohma is happy about this because...? I don't see how getting your sister healed is worth living in Kurata's world.

Gaomon is almost worse than Tohma because this plot line has just revealed him to have zero personality. He's just a drone who will follow any orders? At least Wormmon showed regret about Ken's actions!

They never gave the new ShineGreymon a name so I assume it's "ShineGreymon Burst Mode?" Kinda disappointing that the design is basically a recolor, they could have done something more creative than that. That being said, the fight scene was pretty well animated.

Super unnecessary flashback to the Tohma vs. Masaru fight two seconds after it happened (2000s cringe lol)

I really want Masaru's dad to end up being a digimon somehow lol. I'm surprised they're taking so long to have him show up. Perhaps in the finale?

Speaking of Masaru's dad it's really annoying how whenever anyone mentions him Masaru has the same "...my...DAD!?" response like it's the first time he's heard someone bring him up. Get over it dude lol.

Why is everyone roasting the hell out of Masaru all of the sudden? First Tohma sours on him and now BanchouLeomon is like "you suck and you'll never be your father." I don't think he's earned it really.

Obviously we've seen digimon reduced to digieggs before, but never the main character's! That's an interesting twist. I hope we get to see Masaru and Koromon interact!

Seeing Ikuto attack Kurata directly and Kurata screaming for his life was very satisfying. More of that please!

Belphemon!? Seven demon digimon!?!? Oh, I'm SO on board for this. (I love demon characters lol). It was a bit of a shock that they made him so cute, but that's a nice change of pace.

That ending. I wonder if the former DATS folks are going to try and cure Tohma's sister? IDK why they'd be able to do that, but it felt like that's what they were implying. Either that or they're going to kidnap her for leverage against Tohma, but that sounds a little sus for good guys haha. Come to think of it, what even is Relena's illness? Generic frail girl disease?

Nightwings should've allied with the Icewings and then betrayed them in the climax of the war(when one or two of the sisters keel)

Glory should've been more fiery like Tsunami and not played into the 'lazy rainwing' troupe, and shouldn't have had her heritage discovered the way it was/if at all

Morrowseer was (mostly) right to act the way he did

Darkstalker shouldn't have been so *teehee nobody knows I'm evil except for one convenient dragon*

Sending the *Icewing* Talons of Peace member for a skywing egg was actually the worst decision(from the prologue in book 1 iirc)

Scavengers should've pulled off another big stunt in the first/second arc, maybe not killing a queen, but somebody important and framing it on a dragon to ignite the post-/war

Starflight should've been a hybrid (preferably 1/4 or 1/2 icewing for *drama*)

Blister is the coolest but worst sister and deserved to suffer more losses(maybe having someone close to her die)(if she could've had actual friends to begin with)

More sandwings should've become outraged at Thorn (particularly Burn followers)(bc they're already kinda kookoo)

Kestrel should've lived longer even though her end was a badass plot twist

Ruby's story was so foolish, no one could possibly be that ditzy except maybe Blaze

Dream visitors (dreams) should've been more chaotic and been harder to reach the dragons conscious

Dream visitors should've failed at least once in a daze of forgetting dreams or "nah that's not real" but sparking paranoia in those trying to forget, so much that it leads them to foil someone's plans, (like scarlet and the assassin stuff)(it fails anyway "but I didn't believe it to begin with" ...)

Corals sons should've absolutely despised her and helped the DoD

A dragon should've escaped Scarlets towering prisons and rebelled with a few skywing traitors and failed; to raise tensions and lower the others hopes, to make the DoDs escape more fulfilling (cause the nightwings robbing starflight for the night was too anticlimactic)(also some skywing guard[or crazed prisoner like gills but not him] should've tried to fight the nightwings)

Webs should've died over Dunes

Masterminds whole jig was kinda based (expiramenting bad and all yeah but it was done really well)(like the telling of it all not like he did the expiraments well)

Battle winners daughter is super lame, there should've been an attempted assassination on her as revenge for something either Battlewinner did or bc some nightwing just didn't like her)

Grandeur should've been really into cooking or just big fancy ass feasts

Moorhen should've had a big tragic background or beef with Glacier( or both, having Moorhens best closest family/friend murked by the icewings and she doesn't know why)

Coral should've been more clingy to Tsunami

The false DoD shouldn't have been so lively as if they weren't treated like the second option their whole lives

The thing with scavengers to me is that they aren't inherently a bad idea. I actually think it's pretty cool to have humans be seen as a pest of sorts by these intelligent dragons. I would've loved if scavengers were more involved, albeit not in a "We are living creatures too and deserve to not be eaten-" shut up you walking strip of beef jerky and let me chew on your bones.

My dreams are kinda wacky and I think it would be fun to take inspiration from the particularly labyrinth-like places I sometimes get thrown into, with corridors that lead into other places past and Dream Logic comes into play. Things I always look forward to in my transmigration dramas:

- Main lead becomes a god/fairy as soon as they land in new era

- start a runway and fashion trend

- makes rollerblades for a consort so the said consort can skate her way into the emperor's bed

- makes every single prince fall in love with the ml

- lot of comedy

- obvious distortion of history

- rollerblading consort getting random dude to knock her up so she can baby trap the emperor. Which honestly happens more than you might think

- random dude was also at one point in love with ml. No surprise there

- family drama

- forgetting how many wives/children you have. Again very normal in this kind of drama

- plot twist ml and her mil are from the future

- double plot twist: actually has a happy ending. Which was actually surprising. I don't remember the last drama where you transmigrate and get a happy ending 🤯

Tourtje in Chiang Rai

Eergisteren kwam ik aan in Chiang Rai, m'n laatste stop in Thailand. Bij aankomst realiseerde ik me dat ik 2 handoeken, een onderbroek en m'n riem was vergeten in Pai. Suuuuuperslim weer! Achja, heb ze toch nodig dus ging ik natuurlijk naar het dichtstbijzijnde winkelcentrum om alles te vervangen. Het kostte me een arm en een been, maar het is uiteindelijk dan toch gelukt! + wat onnodige dingen, een ijsje, kfc, etc etc. Duur dagje.

Gisteren heb ik een tour gedaan van Chiang Rai en de Golden Triangle! Het begon goed bij de witte tempel met maar één andere persoon in m'n groep en een best leuke gids. De tempel zelf was praaaaaachtig. Van binnen en van buiten, ik kon er wel uren rondlopen. Overal waar ik keek zag ik nieuwe details, nieuwe fictionele personages, een nieuw iets. Zelfs aan de binnenkant vond je deze schilderingen! Mocht daar alleen geen foto's maken. Ik vond dan zelf ook dat we hier te weinig tijd kregen, maar heb tenminste de grot ook kunnen verkennen!

Daarna gingen we snel door naar de blauwe tempel! Was opzich mooi maar vond hem niet echt heel speciaal. Her werd hier ook duidelijk dat onze gids misschien toch niet super geïnteresseerd was. Hij zette ons namelijk uit de auto en zei dat we "terug moesten komen binnen een uur" zonder ook maar enige uitleg. Dit herhaalde zich voor het zwarte huis, een openlucht "museum" van een overleden-rijke-Thaise man. Heeeeel veel te zien en je kan het je zo gek nog niet bedenken, maar met 0 uitleg was het gewoon best saai. Er lagen huiden van verschillende dieren, vooral veel krokodillen, schilderijen, het zag er allemaal uit als een tempel en er was veel om te zien! Het probleem was alleen dat ik niet wist waar ik naar keek.

Toen... gingen we naar een Hilltribe dorpje. Ik wilde hier niet naar binnen omdat ik het een beetje uitbuiting vind van mensen die niet anders kunnen en omdat het net als een dierentuin voelde. Werd toch naar binnen gedwongen door m'n gids en moet zeggen dat dit precies is wat het was. 'Leuk' om te zien hoe die mensen leven en zich kleden maar zou leuker zijn als ze zo konden leven en kleden zonder afhankelijk te zijn van toerisme voor water en eten.

Ff lunchen en weer door, allemaal in stilte. We gaan naar een theeplantage!!!! Ik vond dit echt supervet om te zien en had hier graag wat langer rondgelopen, helaas stond geluk niet aan mijn kant want na de theeproeverij (1 slokje van 3 verschillende theesmaken die ze daar groeien) kregen we 20min om de 39 hectare aan thee te verkennen. Ja, maar een theetje gekocht en op het terras de heuvels bewonderd.

Eindelijk... éindelijk gaan we dan nu naar de hoofdattractie: de Golden Triangle!!!! Het drielandenpunt tussen Myanmar, Laos en Thailand. Het is eigenlijk gewoon een uitzicht punt met wat standbeeldjes en toeristentrekkers, maar ik vond het heel vet. Links zag je Myanmar, rechts Laos en ik was in Thailand!!! Mind blown. Hoe meer ik erover nadenk hoe minder speciaal het is, eigenlijk. Ik ga de magie maar niet verpesten voor mezelf. Er was hier ook een opiummuseum wat erg leuk ingericht was en ook best informatief! De lange weg terug heb ik maar geslapen, niet alsof een van mijn reisgenoten met we wilde praten ofzo.

Plot twist: m'n visum voor Laos is goedgekeurd!!! Dusss even in het kort: ik ben in Laos! Stay tuned want het begint nu al ontzettend rommelig.

met de geur waar hij gek op is :

ozon en petrichor en morgendauw.

Zijn engel kijkt hem aan

en het voelt als levende draden onder zijn huid.

Cas glimlacht en grijnst en lacht

en sterretjes van vreugde schijnen in zijn ogen

en Dean verstaat nu dat benoemde gedicht van Sappho[1]

dat iedereen zo snel misbruikt.

Hun handen komen dichter- en dichter bij

en Dean kan letterlijk het voelen, de verkorting van de afstand.

Als statische elektriciteit maar ook niet.

En zijn vingers zich

eindelijk om deze van Cas

sloten

en alle zenuwen in deze hand komen tot leven.

De lucht kraakt met spanning

als een storm dat begint

maar het is geen storm.

Oh, Freida. You wanted to get dark with this one, didn’t you? The Teacher strays into some seriously uncomfortable territory, and while I usually love Freida’s twisted thrillers, this one left me feeling more queasy than thrilled.

At its core, the story follows Eve and Nate, a seemingly perfect married couple who also happen to be teachers. But as with all McFadden books, nothing is as it seems. Dark secrets bubble beneath the surface, and the deeper you go, the more twisted the story becomes. However, instead of delivering her trademark sharp twists and satisfying tension, The Teacher takes a risk with disturbing subject matter.

Fast-paced? Yes. Shocking? Definitely. But the plot’s shock value overshadows any meaningful suspense or character development, leaving this witch more disturbed than spellbound.

Meet Eve "Stiletto Queen" Bennett: Eve’s a high school math teacher who shows up to work in black Jimmy Choo stilettos. Yes, a MATH TEACHER. 📐👠 Girl, who are you trying to impress, the quadratic formula? Oh wait, her “hotter-than-a-Hot-Pocket” husband, Nate, who also teaches at the school. But guess what? They don’t bang anymore, and Eve is salty. She’s eyeing her husband like, How dare you deprive me of my mathematical wifely rights?

Meanwhile, Nate is too busy being the faculty thirst trap. There’s literally a student-made hottie teacher list, and Nate's at the top. And Eve knows about it because another teacher told her. Professionalism? Who dat? 😭

Addie’s Story: The Junior Nobody Turned Unwanted Starlet: Addie’s a junior with a reputation in shambles thanks to a rumored affair with her math teacher, Santa Claus—err, Mr. Tuttle. (Picture an actual Santa vibe: jolly, round, and thoroughly unsexy. 🎅) Everyone hates her, and her old BFF, Hudson, ditched her for popularity. She’s also being tormented by Kenzie, the Mean Cheerleader, who seems hellbent on making Addie’s life a hellscape.

Addie ends up in Eve’s math class, and Eve immediately vibes I hate this girl because she doesn’t believe the rumors about Santa Tuttle. Men who are nice could NEVER be predators, amirite? 🥴 Nate "Edgar Allan Poe Wannabe" Bennett Enters the Chat: Addie LOVES poetry. Nate LOVES poetry. They both LOVE Edgar Allan Poe. 🐦‍⬛ Cue all the ick vibes as Nate starts calling Addie a lyrical genius and encouraging her to join the high school poetry magazine (Reflections, because of course). Oh, and he’s making ALL the eye contact. Chocolate-brown eyes, dreamy sighs, you know the drill.

Meanwhile, Eve and Her Shoe Obsession: Eve’s not only obsessed with shoes—she’s making love (🤢) to Jay, her hot shoe salesman, in the storeroom at the mall. Yes, witches, she’s cheating on Nate weekly while surrounded by boxes of LOUBOUTINS. And no, she does NOT steal the shoes. Self-control? Maybe. Priorities? Absolutely scrambled.

The Grave Digging Returns: The big climax? Addie and Nate conspire to kill Eve after a frying pan incident goes south. (Seriously, this book hates kitchenware.) But SURPRISE, witches—Eve isn’t dead! She claws her way out of her grave like a vengeful queen, teams up with Jay (the shoe boy), and pranks Nate into insanity with birds, shoes, and pumpkins. 🎃🐦

Final act? Eve and Jay knock Nate out, toss him in the grave, and bury him alive. Poetic justice served in stilettos.

The Epilogue Chaos: Eve vanishes. Addie and Hudson reconnect. Kenzie apologizes. And then the final gut-punch: Jay the Shoe Boy? Actually Hudson. Yeah, Eve was sleeping with a student this whole time. 😳🫠

Final Thoughts: This book is messy, morally bankrupt, and filled with so much shoe content that I feel like I need a Zappos coupon. It’s part Pretty Little Liars, part Lifetime movie, and part Edgar Allan Poe fever dream. 🐦‍⬛ Would I recommend it? Only if you’re in the mood to rage-laugh and scream at fictional people.

Einzelgängers deel 2: Een ander soort liefde: Hoofdstuk 12

Na de twist in de film, nadat de credits over het scherm rollen, kijk ik naar Luna, haar gezicht is weggedraaid van de tv. Ze ademt diep en langzaam in en uit. ‘Luna?’ vraag ik voorzichtig. Wanneer er geen reactie komt, streel ik zachtjes haar hoofd. ‘De film is afgelopen,’ zeg ik vlak tegen haar oor.

‘O Ben, het spijt me, ik was zó ontzettend moe,’ en ze rekt zich uit, inclusief een luide geeuw. ‘Hoe laat is het?’ 

Ik kijk op mijn telefoon. ‘Half elf, ongeveer,’ zeg ik.

‘Hmm,’ zegt ze, geeuwt nogmaals, strekt haar armen uit. ‘Goed als ik even naar de badkamer ga?’

‘Ja hoor, doe maar.’

‘Ben zo terug!’

Blindelings loopt Luna naar de badkamer, alsof ze hier al jaren woont. Ik ga naar de keuken om de restanten van onze geïmproviseerde maaltijd op te ruimen. Wanneer ik de doos beschuitjes in de kast opberg, licht Luna’s telefoon op. Ik twijfel even of ik zou kijken, maar doe het toch, en ik lees: “Nogmaals sorry dat dit weekend niet lukte, Lunalief. Hopelijk past het volgende weekend nog? Xxx” Het bericht is afkomstig van een zekere Lars en mijn gedachten zijn plots overal. Wie is Lars? denk ik. Binnenin voel ik iets wat ik in lange tijd niet meer gevoeld heb. Zou Lars misschien die man zijn waar ze die avond in de nachtclub mee gezoend heeft? Is het een oude vlam van haar? Iemand die ze leerde kennen in de tijd dat we elkaar niet gezien hebben? Ben ik gewoon een van de zovelen voor haar? Een willekeurig iemand die haar aandacht geeft zodra ze de nood voelt om door iemand gezien te willen worden?

Ik hoor een deur die opengaat en het geluid van douchewater. Luna die roept: ‘Is het oké als ik jouw handdoek gebruikt?’ Ik antwoord niet. De deur gaat weer dicht.

Verward ga ik ga aan de keukentafel zitten met een glas water, probeer te raden waar deze Lars ineens vandaan komt. 

Het geluid van de douche verstomt. Ik hoor opnieuw een deur en Luna verschijnt in de deuropening in niets anders gehuld dan een witte handdoek. Haar haren zijn nat, er vallen druppels water op haar schouders.

‘He, Ben, ik wilde even vragen of…Ben?’ 

Ik staar naar mijn glas. Weet niet wat te zeggen. ‘Je hebt een bericht,’ zeg ik droog. 

Verbaasd neemt Luna haar telefoon van de keukentafel. Ze leest het bericht en  moet al snel begrepen hebben waar mijn afstandelijk gedrag vandaan komt want ze zucht demonstratief en gaat recht tegenover me zitten. Even zegt ze niets, dan vraagt ze: ‘Waarom lees je mijn berichten?’

‘Deed ik niet, ik bedoel, je telefoon lichtte op dus ik -’

‘“Lars” is kort voor Larissa, Ben. M’n nichtje. Ze zou me dit weekend helpen mijn tekst voor een toneelstuk in te studeren.’

Ik voel mijn hoofd rood worden en durf Luna niet aan te kijken. Maar tegelijk voel ik een opluchting zoals ik nooit eerder heb ervaren. Wanneer ik toch opkijk, staart Luna me uitdrukkingsloos aan. Dan verschijnt er een brede glimlach op haar gezicht. 

‘Het is helemaal oké hoor. In jouw plaats had ik waarschijnlijk hetzelfde gedacht.’

Ik kijk Luna verontschuldigend aan, zeg dan: ‘In de onderste lade vind je vast nog een nieuwe tandenborstel.’

Luna, staat op, gaat achter me staan en omhelst me. Ik voel haar natte haarlokken in mijn nek. 

‘Ik moet zeggen dat je best schattig bent als je jaloers bent,’ zegt ze. ‘Ik ga me afdrogen.’ Ze geeft me een zoen op mijn wang - de tweede van de avond, stel ik vast - en loopt terug naar de badkamer. De handdoek neemt ze af nog voor ze de badkamer binnen is.

i wanna uhhhhhh update my ffxvi post: i did end up giving it a chance and so i will elaborate on the Me (tm) official review: theres a lot buckle in (spoilers for th3 entire game)

First id just like to say soken delivers another phenomenal soundtrack(no surprize there) Historie - the holy empire and Titan lost are some of my favorite tracks in the game i cannot say i expected anything otherwise and it was a delight to get to every major dominant battle to hear what he cooked

on the topic of battle the gameplay was another huge plus for me. when all else failed i found myself returning to ffxvi for the gameplay alone because it is very genuinely fun, fast paced, and i enjoyed the variety of each eikon it kept rhe game fresh for me espically when it slowed down in every other aspect, i enjoyed every eikon battle to death whenever i couldnt decide if i /liked/ the game while playing i remember fighting titan. i had no clue how the fight would play out despite being late to the scene and i was blown away by how good it was. everything about it was so enjoyable it honestly empowered me to get to the rest of them and bahamut was just as much of a treat. it helped i love dion (i will be getting to characters) and his phase themes (beyond the heavens&ascension) were brilliant. the bahamut fight much like titan did not disappoint. for me at least it felt odin had a bit of a much welcomed difficulty spike enjoyed that fight a lot even if it wasnt as cinematic as bahamut and titan

speaking of... cinematic scenes were a weak point to me.. as cool as they were and they /were/ i cant help but feel like there had to be a better way to interrupt the fight. sometimes it really took me out of the moment to have my fight paused to just like press a button or mash or some shit. its fine just got old /fast/

as far as the rest of the battles they were all fun adn well and good.. i enjoyed every fight theme and found every fight mostly enjoyable although i cant help but feel the DPS check section fighting ultima where you kinda fly arounf him in circles would have been leagues more fun if it was a drakengaerd 3 style synced to thr music event... imagine that....it would be so awesome it woukd be so cool................. anyway as far as the actual final fight.. well lets get to the characters and story first

i wont be discussing the controversy surrounding the game because, despite it impacting my experience playing the game in very real ways, it just isnt what i wanna get into in this base post

alright. maybe i wasnt paying rnough attention but the story to me fell apart when ultima became a bigger actor on the stage. absolutely dont get the lad or the crystals. were destroying yhe mother crystals cos theyre killimg the planet fine well and good the story's pacing in this part was really wonk to me haha it would go from desperately boring an sluggish to fun for a moment and then just so boring again. it wasnt until the final two mother crystals when i became invested in whats happening. the mothercrystal plot twist was like oh ok well cid died for nothing /shrug i really dgaf either way i only really care my beloved mid. i really found myself most invested when characters i liked specifically becme involved with the plot (dion its dion its always dion)

dion's story to me was easily the best (yes my favorite heavensward character was aymeric. whos fucking surprised) fang and and vanille always had the most profound impact on me as far as ff relations go and its def because they were the closest thing we had to a canonical queer relationship and i will say dion and terance felt.. good? i know theyre not the /best/ and fang and vanille were leagues ahead of them a decade ago bit theres that just the way theres no question about their queerness just felt so good to see as a long time queer fan of the series who put up w its homophobic moments lol........... they were definitely a genuine highlight for me and their relationship was so beautiful and refreshing i wish we saw more of them.. especially because clive and jill just did not hit lolll. i couldnt believe how little i resonated with clive, joshua too. for me i usually have no problem relating to the main cast they all feel so human and real even when theyre cartoonish theres an undeniable down to earthness and relatability of most of the ff main casts i just couldnt bring myself to really care about clive

jill's story was for a brief moment something interesting and exciting. this was a woman in a yoshi p game w her own arc where the male character plays a fully supportive role and she isnt put in a passive role for her own story to move someone elses development along jill for the briefest moment maintains her own active will to get closure on her trauma where she isnt punished for it its just so disappointing its her only moments in the game. her character arc is chapters short and afterwards she would almost exclusively play passive roles, even giving clive her powers after they share an equally intimate scene both naked and venerable only for a dynamic to be reinserted through the form of dominant's power

clive was just nothing to me, i honestly tried to like him and i did mostly enjoy joshua as a character but i just did not ever care for his story ultima was so unfleshed out and strange ffxvi was best when it was pretty grounded to the on continent conflicts, the story doesnt feel like it was built around ultima the story honestly feels like it was built around the empire and ultima was an after thought. and man vs empire and then suddenly extraterrestrial/celestial freaks are involved isnt even uncommon ff plot progression. i could play like 5 other final fantasy games at that point. if the combat in ffxvi werent so addicting it would have nothing. (untrue of course it always has a brilliant soundtrack) i just really did not like the way the game built off itself it never felt natural or believable. none of the conflict with ultima felt grounded or natural or like it was built up in any meaningful way

i really dont understand the hype around clive hes very genuinely just a pretty face. i just dont care about u at all no matter how hard i tried

i never cared about hugo or benedickta either, although theyre like tertiary antagonists to be fair

joshua was another highlight for me. hes just very polite and jote was cute if definitely underutilized. i really dont have much else to say i wasnt surprised he died

clive i knew would die, that was a spoiler i knew w out a doubt going in and i was completely disappointed in it anyway. joshua made sense at Least he was basically dying the entire game and dion well. it makes sense yoshi p would kill the one gay man we cant have shit in eorzea but seeing clives entire arc be no dont kill yourselfffffff..... the world and its endless beauty is a bounty of possibilities and meaning. just to die anyway feels well. it just feels and to be fair clive did sacrifice himself for the lives of others but the scene where cid tells clive not to kill himself- regardless of how ungentle he put it- just feels so empty because well clive u could hav just killed yourself there i guess. sorry you were a slave for 13 years youll die before you get to live your life for yourself. like cmon narratively a more satisfying arc for him would have been to overcome this and live for himself even if he has to live w out joshua. he can move on hes done it partially before hes accepted himself he must live but he doesnt get to

its a shame. also unrelated the final fantasy namedrop made me reel but i forgave it for honestly being a little camp......... the lodestone name drop is Not forgiven. just horrible someone shpuld be fired

i dont really have much else to say and out of a desire to post this soon im gonna wrap it up. honestly i had high hopes for final fantasy 16 and im not one to go "oh final fantasy now sucks" because i Love ff13. i love ff15. i liked ff14 a normal amount. but ff16 just felt underwhelming compared to them.. it looked leagues better dont get me wrong even if ill always think ff13 is visually the best out of 'modern' final fantasy for its incredible cgi cutscenes good art direction and the ps3 charm the realtime cutscenes in 16 sometimes felt undynamic in comparison but real time vs cgi is very literally games hardware vs movie so........ not comparable tbh the environment and general worldbuilding of 16 was just so lackluster. the world felt so unreal even if it looked incredibly real, the plot was unfocused at times and inadequately built up, the characters are mostly uninteresting, and the character eith the most meaningful connection to clive was torgal. well torgal and cid but cid dies and leaves a gaping hole in the 'good character' category when it was just him mid and dion to begin with

The Silvapithecus/AgDevil/whatever else it's been called has legit been one of my favorite fantasy monsters since I first saw it as Zola's shadow (Killer Bat) in Blue Dragon.

I also didn't realize until a few years ago that it actually is called a Silvapithecus and it's a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series and spin-off games.
