Did a little fic for this. It's not what you think, because I am not great at action scenes and what not, but wanted to do a little something for it. I hope you enjoy it.

Down Time

It was always nice to come back home again. Stiles looked out the plane window as the view changed from sky to land. He turned to Derek, who was listening to some book on tape. He nudged Derek slightly and pointed his thumb at the window. Derek nodded and continued to listen to his book. There was a subtle change in his posture though. Stiles only recognized it from being around him for so long. To anyone else he was just as relaxed as he was before. Not a tenderness, but a readiness.

It took several more minutes for them to disembark. The Hertz had their rental ready to go when they went to pick it up. The drive to Beacon Hills was quiet as Derek drove. There was nothing much to say. Both Stiles and Derek were mentally preparing to engage their family members and not come off as weird and stiff.

They had a few years of practice by now. There was a reintegration process. First was a stop at the diner a few towns before Beacon Hills. They never picked the same meal, but Stiles always got fries. It was his way of reconnecting with home.

Derek pulled into the diner parking lot and turned off the car. They got out and walked into a nearly empty diner. Stiles nodded to the waitress when he walked in and they both walked to the booth farthest from the door, next to the window. It gave them the best vantage of the diner and the surrounding area outside. It was a habit by now.

The waitress walked over and handed them their menus. “Let me know when you are ready to order.” Derek nodded and gave her a slight smile before opening up his menu.

Stiles already knew what he wanted. Derek closed his menu and Stiles made eye contact with their waitress letting her know they were ready.

Stiles tapped his fingers on the table as he made his order. “I would like a chicken club with curly fries and a chocolate milkshake.”

The waitress wrote his order before turning to Derek. “Uh, I would like a Denver Omelet with sausage and home fries with black coffee. Thanks.”

She nodded and smiled at them before leaving to place their order. Stiles was still tapping his fingers when Derek smirked at him saying, “Nervous?”

Stiles tapped a little faster before stopping and putting his arms crossed over the table, “No more than usual.” Derek nodded. Stiles looked out the window watching a few cars pass by before saying, “We got about two weeks before he go back.”, Derek nodded. “My dad’s taking a couple of days off to hang out. You have any plans?”

Derek shrugged before saying, “Just that same old, same old. Stop by my mom’s, harass Uncle Peter. Just decompress.”

The waitress arrived with their drinks. When she left Stiles took a sip of his milkshake. “Let me know when Peter shows up so that I can harass him a bit too.” Their food arrived and they began their ritual and eat their meals.

Derek drove Stiles to the Sheriff’s office and went off to his mom’s. Stiles was planning to drive his Jeep around while he was in town. He smiled when he looked at the familiar building. He readjusted his duffle bag before walking inside. The office was moving around with its usual activity. Stiles walked towards his father’s office smiling and holding his fingers to his lips, indicating he wanted to surprise his father.

His father’s office door was open, but the Sheriffs head was down dealing with some paperwork. Stiles didn’t knock. He cleared his throat and said, “If you keep hunching over like that you are gonna develop a hump.” Stiles formed an imaginary hump on his back to emphasize his point.

The Sheriff looked up and smiled big. Stiles returned that smile. “Son, why didn’t you tell me when you were coming? I could have picked you guys up from the airport.” He got up from behind his desk and walked up to Stiles giving him a big hug.

Stiles put his hands on his father’s shoulders. “I wanted to surprise you. Plus Derek already made the arrangements.”

The Sheriff looked behind Stiles. “Where is Derek?”

Stiles turned them both to face the office. “He went to go see his mom.”

The Sheriff nodded and smiled again. “It looks like you two are taking care of each other. That’s good, that’s good.” He sighed and walked back to his desk. “I gotta finish this paperwork up before I clock out for the next couple of days. Ask Parrish to drop you off at the house, you know where the spare key is.”

“Sure dad. No problem. I’ll see you when you get home.” The ride home was quick and soothingly familiar.

Lydia breaking up with him for a stupid reason would also make it a nightmare. Their real reasoning for breaking up would be they are much better as platonic besties.

Offer to take him to a Guardians game or something. We’ll let Allison and Kira plan out the rest of your life tonight, but take it shift by shift until then, Chief.”

“I take full responsibility for this,” Allison says, joining them at the counter and giving her drink order to the barista. “I should have taught him how to date back in college.”

“I would have ignored you,” Derek says, sliding his card back in his wallet after they’re all done ordering. He hadn’t dated much in college—he hasn’t dated much at all since either if he’s being truthful, and nothing that could even resemble a relationship. A few dates during the off-season, a hook-up occasionally if he needed it, but Derek’s always been fairly content to be single.
