we know from chille tid that pearl’s never had a dream before. we also know that she doesn’t like to eat and she doesn’t really immerse herself in (a lot) of “human things.”

at least, not on the level that rose did. she loved interacting with humans and doing “human things.” that makes me think she liked to eat and sleep as well. you know, the basics.

it’s all because of her adventurous personality. rose loved experiencing new things and she was incredibly playful. pearl, on the other hand, is incredibly smart, logical, and doesn’t like trying new things as much.

so, rose would be doing something, and she’d have millions of questions. pearl would explain everything to her. she also saved rose a few times from getting sick or being in danger.

i have an inkling that one of the reasons she watches steven sleep is because she used to watch rose sleep… & with rose’s many terrible memories, i feel like she had nightmares often.

i can imagine pearl trying to wake rose up while she’s having a terrifying dream about white diamond’s cold voice, her laugh. or maybe she’s locked in the dark room, or trying to convince the other diamonds to listen to her. rose is talking in her sleep, & then when she wakes up in tears, pearl comforts her and neither of them need to say anything about it because pearl knows everything.

the only thing she needs to say is, “always make sure i’m in the room & we’re somewhere safe if you want to sleep,” hinting to rose that she was talking in her sleep–about something that no one else knows about.

she bakes + cooks really well, and i have an inkling that she learned these skills because of rose. she doesn’t like eating, but she did like watching rose enjoy something that she made for her.

now, pearl was never completely opposed to trying some human activities. she had so many new experiences with rose. they had a cabin since the first year cabins existed where they would spend time together, just the two of them. eventually, they–thatstheendofthispost

▪︎ You prayed the other Diamonds would listen to Pink's whining about not wanting to go through with the colony.

▪︎ While Pink was begging to you, Yellow and Blue, Blue kept glancing at you knowing you didn't want to go through with the colony either.

▪︎ But, you had to teach Pink to go through with what she's started and theres nothing else to that.

▪︎ But after Pink's shattering, Blue was devastated and you had to be there to comfort her.

▪︎ But you were, relieved? That earth was saved, even if Pink had gotten shattered in the process. You knew she wanted earth to be saved, her wish would be completed by Rose Quartz.

▪︎ Blue also knew that you weren't as devastated as her. And she knew you were relieved.

▪︎ When the diamonds wanted to blast every gem off earth, you didn't want to participate in the blasting.

▪︎ After it was revealed that Rose Quartz was Pink diamond and Rose Quartz had a 'son', you were extra relieved knowing Earth was alright and Pink Diamond was too, but just in another form.

▪︎ After Pink's son wanted to stay back on earth, needless to say you were honestly proud of him. ▪︎ having studied earth's life and then trying to teach it to blue

▪︎ You knew what son, mother, father and the earthly terms meant so you had no trouble adjusting to him.

▪︎ You knew Steven wasn't Pink Diamond, but Steven had his mother's spirit.

▪︎ And when you, Yellow, Blue and White took in Spinel in "replace" for Steven, you and Blue acted as if you were parents to her, together ofcourse.

~You're like her little mini emotional support animal. She likes to hold you in her hand and pet your head with her finger. She's so gentle, like she's petting a butterfly wing.

~She also likes to have you sit on her shoulder. If you kiss her cheek she'll be so flattered. Showering her with a ton of love is a good way to fluster her, which she doesn't get flustered often, but when you hug her fingers and kiss her cheek, she's so amazed that somebody so small can make her so happy that she turns pink and has a silly little smile on her face.

~She can also shrink to your size- she doesn't want to do that in front of other people, really, but she's always wanted a hug from you...

~Her skin is so warm and very soft, she feels almost silky.

~White is funny without realizing she's funny. She could say the most outlandish thing possible, just for the sake of speaking, and it usually ends up being something silly.

A Poly-Gem Mini Fic

Steven finally fell asleep, wrapped tightly and comfortably in a bundle of blankets he was insisted he wanted to share but ended up keeping for himself when the gems refused. Rose carefully and slowly picked him up to carry him to bed. Much to her amusement, he had curled up into a ball, a habit he’s had since he was a baby and clearly never left. She tucked him in, patted his hair and adjusted his pillow next to him so he’d still feel something snuggled up close to him.

For whatever reason, she felt compelled to lay back down on the blanket of Steven’s floor next to the others. She knew better then to wake them up, especially when she was already getting on everyone’s nerves. Yet again, she was surprised when she felt sleepy, warm arms warp around her as the gems made room for her. Even after a huge argument they still—literally—welcomed her with open arms.

She sighed heavily and turned to her side as she closed her eyes. Garnet’s arm wrapped around her side as she pressed up closely to her back. Amethyst lying in-between her and Rose, curled up most closely to Garnet but her leg draped over Rose’s waist. Pearl snuggled up in Rose’s arms, facing away from her but smiling softly as she snored, her gem pressed against Rose’s forearm. They still loved her, even after everything.

Prologue ☆

Pearl! Welcome to the world you beautiful beautiful thing.” Her smooth bubbly voice was the first think Pearl ever heard. Even before she could put a name to it, she swore that voice was the most divine thing in the whole galaxy. The new gem opened her eyes to see an overwhelming flash of color, but even though she could feel herself getting overwhelmed, she focused her vision on the gem infront of her. She looked exquisite standing above her, with puffy pink hair and bright, sparkling eyes that seemed to hold a million worlds.  

Pink Diamond: Your new owner. Now, you must serve. Pearl put a smile on her face as a little voice told her about this wonderful being. 

“Hello my Diamond, it is wonderful to be of service.” She saw her Diamond’s smile falter, and with it her surroundings seem to implode on themselves. No. No. No! Her Diamond was not happy, she was not serving properly, she had done something wrong, she was inadequate for her and needed to be replaced immediately-

Then her smile was back, and the world was okay again. Everything was back in it’s rightful place, Pearl was at peace, but most importantly, her Diamond was at peace.

A random fic idea

"Greg!"

His girlfriend's voice was a hushed whisper, and her dark eyes were wide with something so raw and hurt even as suppressed as it seemed that he reached out to grab her hand.

Squirming uncomfortably, he tried to tell her: "It's from the construction company-" And here he slid in an undertone of distaste for the damage. "They were building something here." He took a quick breath out to quickly reassure her. "It'll heal."

"What if it doesn't?"

Greg swallowed and remembered that secret trip in June, rows and rows and her dazed expression and wet streaks running down her face that just sank into the ground and dry soil sticking to his jeans that wouldn't seem to go away. And he had taken one look at the door to Rose's cloud-filled haven and thrown them in the trash.

"We can fix this!"

And words tumbled out accidentally and came out too loud.

She tensed and gripped his hand harder, turning to look at him with ringlets falling over her bare shoulders.

"We... can?"

She looked haunted. Out of it.

He nodded firmly and squeezed her hand back.

"We can at least fix this."

"...where, do we even begin?" Her eyes were watering and she quickly wiped her eyes to put on a different face, breathing quick.

He grabbed her other hand.

"Here."

She swallowed. "It's not enough." Guilt.

"It's gonna have to be."

Steven Universe told from the perspective of other characters

Garnet: A story of gay empowerment from start to finish. As a book it would be titled either Made of Love or Stronger Than You and feature Garnet's gauntlets with her wedding rings on them as cover art.

Amethyst: A seemingly wacky coming of age story that drops the most heartfelt moments when your guard is down. The cover resembles kids' detective stories, the kind where the whole gang is looking around for clues to the mystery.

Pearl: Everything up to Rose's death is an ancient literary classic titled The Ballad of Rose Quartz, illustrated with intricate inkbrush paintings. Steven Universe season one to three is the kind of introspective life after tragedy novel you pick up to look sophisticated reading. It's probably titled Without Her or something similiar. I don't have a title for season four and onwards, but the blurb is "it's not easy to manage twenty girlfriends, two life partners, a son and a dark past at the same time!" It's much more lighthearted than the previous two, but still prone to punching you in the emotions with little warning.

Connie: A magical adventure series just like the Unfamiliar Familiar! It centers Steven the magical boy with his best friend and eventual love interest Connie as the female lead. The tone gets a little darker after the first book/season, but less so than the original Steven Universe (let alone Steven Universe Future).

Greg: First a coming of age story, but unlike Amethyst this one is about breaking away from toxic people in your life. This story gets its happy ending when Greg finally finds someone he can be himself with in Rose. The time until Rose's death is a romantic comedy titled My Girlfriend, her Girlfriend and Me and conists mostly of shenanigans. After Rose's death and Steven's birth, it turns into something more bittersweet centering Greg's worries about being an adequate father to his magical son.

Peridot: It's titled How I learned to stop worrying and join the Rebellion and is easily the most lighthearted installment here. Our dorky protagonist is very obviously a somewhat unreliable narrator, but in a funny way. She encounters a few struggles, but they are quickly overcome with the power of friendship.

Lapis: This is just multiple whump fics. They're in a collection titled Bad Things Happen Roulette. Steven Universe the Movie is a pretty standard fantasy adventure with a group of powerful heroes though, and Steven Universe Future is the fluff fic with a smidge of angst you'd read as a pick me up after Bad Things Happen Roulette.

Bismuth: The war is a good vs evil sci-fi story with lots of social commentary. The Diamonds are definitely irredeemable here. I don't know what to do with the few episodes of the original Steven Universe she was in, but the movie is an empowerment narrative against systemic oppression titled Still Standing, or something in that style. Steven Universe Future however is a romantic comedy.

Rose: This is just a straight (well, bi) up tragedy. Our protagonist desperately tries to recover from her childhood trauma and be a good person, but is ultimately unable to escape the prison of her own mind. The book wins several literature prizes, but very few people actually read it because it's just too depressing.

i'm in my steven universe zealot stage

i'm rescinding ALL my previous lukewarm "well i guEsS" takes and putting my foot down

bismuth being bubbled and then not being addressed again until after ASPR isn't some targeted "insult" to her character, it's literally the only in-world decision that makes sense because she- working off of the only muddled information she had- tried to harm Steven thinking he was Rose, and the Crystal Gems couldn't risk her causing any further harm to Steven, and they didn't yet have the information that would change her perspective enough to get her off the war path. you can argue about the occasional necessity of violence in real life revolutionary settings all you want, idc, but the crux of the matter for this story is that violence WOULDN'T WORK for the very specific reasons that the diamonds are family to Rose, and they are required ingredients for healing the damage they caused. not to mention, SU is all about radical restorative justice anyways and if some folks haven't figured that out yet, idk what to tell them

the episode onion gang- whether you happen to enjoy its precise brand of hijinks or not- is IN FACT important to the broader themes of steven universe because it shows a fantastic example of our own main character struggling to understand others' way of life for once (thus he is not infallible to falling into the same traps as the Homeworld Gems he tries to befriend, and ALSO has work to do on himself), and also highlights his intense loneliness and growing alienation from his humanity, which is further played with in the episode right after, Gem Harvest.

the ending of SU season five was not rushed, just compressed (aka No Fluff, All Content) and there is a Huge difference between the two. every puzzle piece we needed to understand the season's conclusion was given to us. not getting certain pieces of Gem lore fans desired doesn't mean it is "rushed."

the scene in Homeworld Bound where Steven has an intrusive thought about hurting White wasn't "confusingly written," some people on this goddamn webbed site just don't have brains

Summary:

You draw Blue diamond during a court session and she sees it.

Blue allows you to draw during court sessions, you had been pondering in your head for a thing to draw while Yellow and Blue were deciding what to do with the rebelling gem.

You had decided to draw Blue diamond since you had nothing else to draw currently, you hadn't drawn her before in fear of her seeing it and replacing you if she didn't like it.

But that concept started to feel unlikely to you since..Blue diamond had started getting a bit attached to you and showing it in private, she'd ofcourse act normal around Yellow and White and other gems but in private she seemed different.

You begun to draw Blue while standing in your spot beside her looking at her every now and then for reference, she looked gorgeous as always.

When the court session had come to a close, before Blue Diamond had gotten up from her seat, she noticed a familiar face on your drawing.

She immediately recognised the face as her own and became strangely happy with how good you had drawn her. She slightly leaned backwards to get a better look and watched you finish the drawing before she got up from her seat.

Blue Diamond wanted to address the drawing you had made of her and see it up close but she could never ask to see it in front of Yellow, instead, she decided she would go for a bath and ask you about it on the way there.

While walking through the halls to the pool(or bath?) you followed right behind your diamond as you always do and stopped right at the steps of the pool and did the diamond salute to show your stop is there, though you became confused since Blue diamond wasn't going up the steps.

She stared down at you. You started to become a little nervous, did you go out of line? Was something wrong? Before you could think for longer Blue diamond said with her timid voice "Pearl, I saw you drawing me during the court session." Her voice made you shudder a bit, maybe she didn't actually like it?

"May I see it again?" Blue said, you didn't hesitate and pulled out the drawing as fast as you could and held it up to her, she gladly took it up to her and looked at it, squinting slightly.

"Hm, it's quite beautiful, Pearl." She said while holding it back for you to take, as you took it from her you let out a quick sigh of relief.

Blue still wasn't going up the stairs and you stared up at her in slight confusion again.

"Pearl, please accompany me up the stairs." Blue said while turning to the stairs and you followed your diamonds command up to the pool.

as far as being in an equal relationship goes, yellow diamond is extremely out of her element — she’s used to being in a position of distinct hierarchical authority, and only having one person who she truly sees is on an equal level to herself, and that mentality does cause a lot of conflict early on in your relationship

she takes care of you, of course, and always makes sure that you’re well tended to and have everything you could possibly want or need — making use of her countless colonies and underlings to ensure that this is the case, making sure that you’re worshipped and respected as an authority figure in the same way that she is

but yellow diamond is also quite emotionally distant and dismissive at times because of how busy she is, and unless you express a need for intimacy and affection to her then she’s not going to realise that you feel neglected — but even then it’s incredibly forced and stiff as she’s just not used to being physically or verbally affectionate with you, or anyone, quite yet (just give her some time, she’ll grow to love it)

if anyone dares to disrespect you or offend you in anyway then yellow will be swift to punish them for it — either poofing or outright cracking their gem, or sending them to trial to find a ‘better’ punishment if you’re less fond of execution

she doesn’t use any pet names with you and generally just calls you by your first name (or, maybe, a slightly shortened version of it), but if you insist on calling her a term of endearment then she’d probably prefer something that sounds more formal — think ‘my diamond’ but more affectionate, like ‘my dear’ or ‘my beloved’

she’s terrified of losing you as she did pink, which makes her extremely protective over you — refusing to let you leave her sight (whether that’s in her room on home world, in her palanquin when she’s on a colony, in her ship, etc) and having you accompanied by a large collection of amethyst and jasper guards wherever you go if she’s too busy to physically accompany you herself (she cannot lose another person she cares about; losing you would destroy her)

whenever you’re making a public appearance she makes sure that your outfit is spotless — having her servants dress you in her colours and in clothes that are as practical as they are formal — and that you’re mentally prepared for everything that is expected of you well in advance (memorising dances, practising posture and poses, mastering the perfect acknowledging smile and polite nod, etc.) so that there’s no chance of either of you being looked down upon

you’re the only person aside from pink diamond who has ever been able to make her laugh — and you’re also the only one who gets to see the ‘imperfections’ that she hides from the other diamonds and their subjects, such as her sense of humour and her insecurities about her place in the gem empire

no matter how busy she is, she refuses to move whenever you fall asleep on her — taking her calls wherever she is and working around you, instructing whoever she’s talking with to stay quiet as she doesn’t want to wake you (she thinks you’re so very adorable like that and she doesn’t have the heart to disturb your sleep)

she’d get you your own pearl, or an entire gem entourage, if you asked — making sure that you got only the best cut of each because you deserve only the best — but in the meantime yellow pearl is more than happy to entertain you when her diamond is working, and in fact you’ll likely end up getting along quite well as your relationship with yellow diamond progresses

Summary: Future-era post-shattering Jasper has no choice but to be alive, to exist, to find a purpose for herself while learning how to cope with a lifetime of trauma, new physical issues from shattering, and social dynamics she's never experienced with gems she doesn't understand. Many who are really down bad for her. Starts off pretty heavy but there will be fluff and fun and love and light, I promise.

Jasper couldn’t remember making her way back to her cave. She couldn’t remember anything said to her after the order, “Find something better to do with your life.”

Those words tumbled around her numb mind on loop, layered over thousands of years of horror that would never go away. Her entire existence had been a waste of resources, at best. Static buzzing flooded her senses and threatened to rip her apart all over again. Her skin prickled head to toe and the weight of reality crushed her chest in. She couldn’t make her lungs expand. An all too-familiar sensation in recent years.

She stared, unseeing, at the same spot on the wall of her cave for hours while that buzzing built and built until she flung herself into the cool night air, hyperventilating, feeling like she might corrupt all over again while memories tore her apart. Her knees hit the bare earth and she dug hands into her hair, gripping those hideous, detestable horns. The panic broke into a festering hatred and a hollow laugh broke through the frantic gasping.

One of them was broken now, reduced to a stump. The other remained intact, coming to a sharp point that she pressed her thumb into until pink spikes flashed across her vision and she shuddered, wondering if she could rip it off. She never actually tried.

She gripped the foul, bone-like growth while her heart raced. Won’t fix anything. You’re trash by design. Her hand fell away and she was overwhelmingly numb again, taking deep, shuddering breaths as she looked around.

This didn’t feel like her cave anymore. She never considered this place anything special, but it had been secure, if nothing else. Her eyes lingered on the little wooden hut that didn’t belong to her and the static inside her grew loud again.

It was easy to rip apart, at least, easy to fling away into the woods with very little effort or thought. And then as if by instinct, without any real decision to do so, Jasper began tracking the damage left by the fight, retracing their steps.

The thrill of it all returned as if she was reliving it in real time, delighting in the confidence and competence with which her Diamond threw every bit of his power at her, finally. Proving, after all this time, that Diamonds were just as powerful as they’d been made to believe. It wasn’t all a lie.

Part of her felt a choking, overwhelming insanity if she thought too hard about the multiple sincere attempts she’d made at destroying the Diamond she was created to protect, between Rose Quartz and now Steven. Rage mingled with guilt and she could feel the pressure mounting once again, the buzzing growing louder.

She followed damaged trees, fallen branches, occasional small craters from missed or deflected strikes. A creature Steven once called a “deer” lay obliterated in one of the pits, a gruesome mess of wrecked limbs and insides brought out. Those pink discs did some real damage now that he knew how to use them.

And then her stomach dropped when she came to the edge of a vast crater; a half-mile wide strip of decimated organic material half-buried under a deep layer of blown-up soil, clay, and rock. Pink spikes consumed her vision and she felt the terror flood her once again, the horrible realization that she was afraid of being shattered. She never expected self-preservation to kick in at the last second.

The pain of being split apart was exquisite. It lasted only a moment, but it was like remembering every sort of pain she’d ever felt, and then feeling them all again, combined, in one final flash. Ripped and torn in every direction, physically and mentally. But not erased.

No, that was the real horror, Jasper had discovered. There was no silence after shattering. There was no freedom from existence, of course it couldn’t be that simple. She assumed there would be some sort of release, craved it, at times, but she’d been so utterly wrong.

But even so, the panic came before she learned the truth, not after. That realization puzzled her. Why did she fear her existence ending, particularly when it’d been nothing but misery?

Shattered, she existed as formless energy: semiconscious but broken, detached from the corporeal world and lost. Locked in a prison of vague feelings, shadows of memories, flashes of sensation. Everything was wrong. She needed to form. She needed to be whole. She was pure fear. She wasn’t anything at all. And then, after what felt like her entire lifetime, her energy was being redirected, pulled, fused back into place, and with a terrified gasp, she was reborn.

Fear and wonder were matched in intensity in that moment. Only a truly powerful, merciful Diamond could so easily destroy a gem and then put them back together. And to be brought back at all must mean she was needed for some greater purpose, or at least to finally serve the one she was made for.

Find something better to do.

She dropped down into the crater, trekking through the raised hills of destruction and clambering over broken trees until she found what she was looking for. Freshly ruined earth surrounding a small field of flower and grass regrowth that marked where he crawled around crying, collecting the pieces of her gem. Pathetic.

She laid down in the grass and flowers, staring up at the starry sky and feeling utterly alone.

Why would he bring her back for this?

Her skin prickled and the static in her mind amplified and she wanted to rip herself apart with own claws. She disconnected from reality and felt sheer horror pulse through her every atom, more powerful than any physical pain. Her very existence and continued survival felt like some sick cosmic joke.

To emerge during a violent raid on her defective kindergarten, during a false war, with the sole purpose to protect the same gem she was meant to fruitlessly attempt to destroy… she was created to fail and cursed to endure eternity with no viable escape. She remembered a thought she used to have, long, long ago, that her fellow kindergartners had it lucky. They were all deemed off-color and shattered the moment the war was lost, her agate loved reminding her. They got to escape before the real torture began.

Or so she assumed. Now she knew better. Now she knew exactly how her fellow kindergartners felt for thousands of years. Would their shards ever be recovered? Or were they powdered and released into space, deemed too dysfunctional even for harvesting? Her agate’s voice echoed in her mind like the crack of a whip, “Only traitorous, Earth-made trash would care about the complete waste of Yellow Diamond’s time and resources that was your kindergarten. You’re not a traitor to your Diamond, are you?”

Maybe “something better” was never resting until Yellow Diamond felt every bit of pain she’s ever inflicted, directly or through her agates. Maybe it was hunting down her old agates and smashing them to powder.

A flash of pink spikes blotted out the dawn sky and her stomach flipped and she scrambled to her feet, her heart ready to burst. The sudden panic was quickly drowned in shame at her reaction to a memory of his voice. Coming back here was stupid. Why had she done it, without even thinking?

Why was she trembling?

As repulsive as the idea was, her only option was obeying her Diamond’s expectations by going to his stupid school. Being tortured by agates seemed more fun than learning how to befriend an agate, and she was certain plenty of gems would feel the same about her. But really, what choice did she have? Minding her own business in the forest away from everyone is how she ended up shattered.

Jasper gritted her teeth and clambered out of the canyon of blasted forest, wandering away from her grave. She was broken and ready to face whatever horrible new life she’d have to endure, miserable and alone as always.
