New year, new me? 🤔
Diet culture might use that common saying to make you believe now is the best time to change your lifestyle.
It’ll make you believe that the answer to “new year, new you” is some diet.
But what’s wrong with the current you, anyway?
Before you jump on to the latest fad diet, take some time to sit with the question of why you want to go on a diet in the first place. Is it because you want to change something about you? Are the voices your own or that of diet culture?
Growth is beautiful, but don’t force yourself to change something about yourself just because society (and diet culture) tells you to.

If you genuinely prefer mashed cauliflower to mashed potatoes, go for it. If you feel like you should try to cut calories and make “healthier” switches because you’re afraid to eat the real Thanksgiving food, that is not a healthy attitude towards food.
Food around the holidays has so much potential to enhance your experience and sweeten your memories. Food should not be seen as the enemy. You are not being “bad” for having two pieces of pie and real mashed potatoes and real gravy. You have not failed if you end up overeating. It’s a learning experience! I encourage you to tap into your responses when you think about your favorite holiday foods: if there is any guilt or shame connected to wanting these foods, examine this. Challenge this if you are ready. Diet culture is strong but you are stronger, and you deserve to give yourself what you actually want.
Remember that health is not just what you put into your body. Being afraid of food, being hypervigilant about calories, skipping meals or exercising to compensate for what you’re about to eat is not healthy. Food should not control you. I know the holidays can be very hard and really test your relationship with food and your body. And you absolutely don’t have to have it all figured out this year. If anything, just be gentle with yourself. ❤

Repost @the_sunkissed_kitchen - I've been thinking a lot about food these past few weeks (well, I always think about food.. But in a different way) . I've become increasingly interested in how your emotional state while eating affects how your body reacts to it...and how a highly strung person drinking a green smoothie differs from a calm and happy person drinking a coke.. (obviously there's all sorts of variables... Such as the coke producing affects in your brain that may counter that calm feeling..but if someone truly believes a coke is healthy for them, how the body reacts in comparison to someone who drinks that coke and feels guilty about it fascinates me..) . I always eat whole plant foods.. But I try to make sure I'm calm and in a good place mentally when I do. . The effects of stress (any type, guilt, shame, urgency, anxiety, etc) on digestion, microbiome, and weight management is something I'm increasingly interested in. . Anyway....heres a rainbow pasta salad, that I didn't feel at all guilty about eating 😂🌈🥗😋 . . #plantbased #vegan #veganfood#whatveganseat #rainbow #salad #dietsdontwork #food #foodie #mentalhealth #nutritarian https://www.instagram.com/p/B58ElkFgy6o/?igshid=854x5iun70mv

Reposted from @eatfreelynutritiontherapy - The "it's not a diet it's a lifestyle" message can be so damaging. It, like all diets, puts all the responsibility on the person who is following whatever "guidelines" are involved and then all of the blame on said person who stops following it because it's likely too restrictive/rigid....ergo, it's not a lifestyle. #heresyoursign You might not be making a maintainable lifestyle change if: - you can't eat as much as your body is hungry for - you can't eat the foods you're hungry for - you have to eat/stop eating at certain times - you have "cheat days" - you have to avoid certain foods (and not due to allergies) - you can have certain foods only after a period of avoiding or after "earning" it - you have to move your body for a designated amount of time or particular way - you're unable to enjoy meals with others because of the restrictions you're following - you find yourself eating the same foods over and over due to limited choices that are "approved" This is by no means a fully inclusive list but hopefully provides some ways to notice diet culture #youmightbeonadietif #zerochanceitsntadiet #nondietapproach #nondietdietitian #haesdietitian #dietsdontwork #EDRD #intuitiveeating https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt85VK-lPl6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=aduk8eqvokqk

Despite the fact that dieting and restricting/limiting certain foods is so common in our culture, that doesn’t change the fact that dieting = disordered eating.
When I say “dieting”, I’m referring to any way of eating that is dictated by external forces rather than internal ones. A diet is when someone or something outside of yourself determines what you eat, when you eat, or how you eat.
Diet culture is so pervasive throughout every part of our society - our medical and health system, education system, public health entities, and all forms of media - that it’s become so normalized to the point where NOT trying to “control” what you eat seems abnormal.
But in reality, any form of dieting or food restriction is disordered eating. This may look like:
-yo-yo dieting
-skipping meals
-not eating when hungry
-anxiety around what/when/how much you’re going to eat
-food guilt
-self-worth thats highly connected to body size/weight
-constant calorie counting
-rigid rules around food
-all or nothing thinking in regards to food
-inflexible meal times
-refusing to eat food you didn’t make/don’t know what’s in it
Again so much of this is normalized in our culture but that does NOT mean that this is normal. All of these behaviors are disordered.
Disordered eating has a huge effect on our bodies, our minds, and our lives. (Not to mention that it objectifies and elevates thin, white bodies while oppressing and marginalizing fat, BIPOC people.)
While the examples above may
not seem harmful on the surface, they keep you disconnected from your body. It’s impossible to honor your body and give it what it needs—nutritionally or otherwise—when you’re caught up trying to follow external rules or diet mentality.
While you may not have a clinical eating disorder, disordered eating behaviors are just as deserving of recovery ❤️

This is not from detoxes, designated cheat meals, skinny teas and not eating carbs at night, it’s not from going gluten free without a clinical reason , cutting out fruit and never ‘skipping a Monday’. This is not from counting macros and calories and cutting out ALL junk food FOREVER . This is not from not eating past 8pm and drinking a million liters of water . This is not from frantically getting “summer ready” or from setting a ton of unrealistic goals in the new year . This is not from skipping dessert, avoiding the bread basket, asking for dressing on the side and certainly not from forgoing the wine. This is not from forbidding chocolate because it’s a Tuesday or from replacing a pizza crust with cauliflower. This is not from avoiding fried food and micromanaging how much sauce is on something. _ This is from moving in a way that I enjoy, from a way of eating that is intuitive and circumstantial on the deepest level, it is from complete intro-cellular calm, flow and ease , and only following evidence based research. This is from eating for my soul, eating with others and from varied, relaxed and inclusive eating☺️ This is from balance and balance is anything but perfect 💕 I urge you to ignore the noise and the unrealistic diet advice and tune in . . . . . . #intuitiveeating#intuitivehealth#ditchthediet#listentoyourbody#eatmoreplants#moveinawayyouenjoy#soundhealthadvice#inspiredhealth#vegannomore#bodypositiveinfluencer#findbalancewithhealth#everybodyisdifferent#endthedietcycle#workingandfitness#dietsdontwork (at Pretoria, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtajbglFhSP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=blvtjbqzdg92
