I think we need to talk about Ruby’s reaction to the end of Dot and Bubble.

Because yet, the Doctor’s meltdown and frustration is incredibly well portrayed by Ncuti. His astounding sympathy and longing to save these people’s lives even after he realizes what is going on. But Ruby? There was something in her character I didn’t exactly get from the Doctor. And that’s… anger. A distinctly human anger.

Anger not only when she realizes why she was able to get through to Lindy when the Doctor couldn’t, but a very personal anger at the horrifying reality of racism and seeing firsthand that even in this futuristic society it still persists.

And it’s so good for her character not only because she’s obviously anti- racist, but because this is a girl who was adopted and raised and loved and cared for by a black family. And these people not even affectively, but concretely, just told her that they think that love and support is disgusting. They think her family is wrong for existing. They think Ruby is wrong for having a family and a home.

It’s absolutely vile. And to be clear— the Doctor’s reaction is just as nuanced coming from the inside as the person of color and just as important, played to perfection by Ncuti Gatwa. This is not me trying to take away significance from the actual POC character when dealing with themes and instances of racism. I just find it brilliant and think it deserves to be talked about as well.

I'm walking backwards in the light rain at dusk, and John does this amazing gesture, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips. It was lovely, the spontaneity of that gesture. - Denis Reggie

“Wait.. I do want to touch your hair” You mumbled quietly. His hair was so interesting to you. It was practically flames, but they weren't hot? You smiled as you noticed the tips of his hair turn pink.

‘What does that mean?’ You asked as you took the initiative to touch his hair. You took the tips of his hair and ran your fingers through it. You watched him tremble slightly as you took control of the situation. He looked flustered, which was a sight you liked to see. You’d developed a liking towards him after you noticed how passionate he was about his video games. And how cute he was when he was shy, which was most of the time when you two were alone. You knew that the feeling was mutual, but he’d never confess to you. 

“I-it means.. uuhmm..” You heard him take a breath; a long one at that. You gave him your smile and tilted your head. Your fingers were still running through his hair. 

“...that I'm flustered or.. uh embarrassed.” You heard him whisper underneath his breath. You blinked as he admitted the true meaning. You couldn’t help but smile after that. Of course it meant that. An idiot could figure that out. You just wanted to listen to him talk. You liked it when you listened to him ramble about video games to the people he didn’t like in school (which was practically anyone who’s extroverted). 

You couldn’t help but notice how intimate your position was. You were holding eye contact with him at this point. You were inches away from him as you caressed his hair. He was looking at you as you played with his hair. Maybe it was the right time to confess, right now, in the middle of his room. Ortho was out on a stroll, probably talking to anyone he saw in the halls. Yeah, maybe it is.

“Idia,” You muttered, going over your words in your head. You watched him nod and you let out a soft sigh. “I like you, a lot." 

You knew it was going to end in the words you wanted to hear after you saw half his hair turn pink and his stuttering. You giggled as you saw the mess of the boy you like.

You know I think the ruby’s mum just being an ordinary person ‘twist’ was Russell’s attempt to take the rey twist from Last Jedi and do it better and while I do think it is better handled here than in Last Jedi, it still feels like kind of a let down because some weird time loopy paradoxical bullshit involving the 73 yards timeline would have been way more interesting 👀

It honestly scares me that I always figure out every detail in watching any series, but I didn't get at all that the new episode was about racism. Whole setting with the internet turned my attention away, because I was expecting shaming younger generation by RTD...

Meeting a POC in my country is like... once in a year event which means you only pass them quickly on the sidewalk. Which is kind of sad...

watching it literally looked like:

* omg why is everything so pale? Is it a metaphore for phone screen light?

* okay, she blocked him, because people only like watching dumb things on the internet

* she listened to Ruby? okay, she is a woman and she pretended to do a form

* she was thinking that Doctor is different guy than earlier? that's okay I guess, I don't recognize faces from the internet too (adhd ✨)

* she is surprised that they are in the same room? I get it, none of these guys meet anymore

* *didn't notice everyone else is white, because I always focus on the Doctor and british actors are still mostly white these days*

* "voodoo"? weird choice, maybe her family is from place where they mention it a lot or she was watching witches on the internet

* "pioneers?" Is she American? They can't walk, how are they going to survive lmao

* *subtitles in my language translated her "sir" to plural you, so I was thinking she was talking to both Doctor and Ruby*

* I'd be mad and sad like crazy too if these dumb idiots didn't want to be saved because I'm not from their planet and don't have followers

I literally missed all the signs, I'm an idiot and feel bad. I went to tumblr with ":0". And... I think I should say that, because it's important how many viewers probably missed it too

This final episode had some major issues with its writing but God, seeing Ruby get everything the Doctor longs for but never can have broke me.
