Beyond the Self
Embracing a Global Consciousness for Planetary Well-beingIn an era marked by rampant individualism and self-centric ideologies, there’s a burgeoning need to shift our perspective from ‘me’ to ‘us,’ extending our concerns and actions beyond the narrow confines of personal gain. The realization that it’s not about the individual alone, but about our collective existence, could be the cornerstone of…

Sometimes an Inventive Story Needs A Little Help
Sometimes an Inventive Story Needs A Little Help
The Night Burns Bright, by Ross Barkan Suppose Earth’s population had grown so numerous and the planet’s resources so few that decisions had to be made if humanity were to survive. What solution would work? Move to Mars? Extreme birth control? This is the underlying theme to Ross Barkan’s novel. It would give away too much if I were to offer a ruinous clue here, but the plot involves a commune…

🌿An Earth Day fusion repost from @theimeu and @muchachafanzine.
🌿In honor of Earth Day, please visit @zaytoun_cic, @handmadepalestine, or @plant.eenolijfboom to plant an olive tree in Palestine. 🕊
🌿From @theimeu:
This Earth Day, we mourn the 34,000+ Palestinians killed by Israel in Gaza and Israel’s continued degradation of Gaza’s land, water, and other natural resources that make life possible for Palestinians.
In the past 6 months alone, Israel has destroyed farmland and greenhouses, contaminated natural resources with hazardous materials, bombed key water purifying infrastructure and wells, and created conditions for epidemics caused by an extreme excess of sewage, waste, and pollution.
Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza’s environment is part of its goal of making life for Palestinians in Gaza unlivable.
Link in bio to contact your reps and urge an immediate, permanent ceasefire and the immediate suspension of all arms and funds to Israel.
Sources: The Guardian, Scientific American
🌿From @muchachafanzine:
Reminder this #EarthDay that from Turtle Island to Pa1estine, your environmentalism doesn’t mean sh!t if you don’t support giving the #LandBack to Indigenous people. 🤷🏽‍♀️

METAL FLOWER, MARK III
IV. Inland Waters: Highlands (A Farewell)
Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892)
Flow down, cold rivulet, to the sea
Thy tribute wave deliver:
No more by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever.
Flow, softly flow, by lawn and lea,
A rivulet then a river:
No where by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever.
But here will sigh thine alder tree,
And here thine aspen shiver;
And here by thee will hum the bee,
For ever and for ever.
A thousand suns will stream on thee,
A thousand moons will quiver;
But not by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever.

Native American Spirituality: A Path of Harmony with the Earth
In a world facing pressing environmental challenges, the need for a sustainable and holistic approach to our relationship with the planet has become increasingly apparent. Native American spirituality offers a unique perspective that emphasizes a deep connection and reverence for the Earth. In this blog post, we will explore why Native American religion stands out as a path that holds valuable lessons for humanity's harmonious coexistence with nature.
1 - Ecological Wisdom: Native American religions have long recognized the interconnectedness of all living beings and the environment. They view nature as a sacred and interconnected web of life, where every entity, from animals and plants to rivers and mountains, possesses inherent value and deserves respect. This ecological wisdom teaches us the importance of living in harmony with the Earth and embracing sustainable practices that honor the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Example: The Navajo people's belief in the interconnectedness of all things is reflected in their concept of "Hózhǫ́ǫ́gįį́," which encompasses beauty, balance, harmony, and health. It promotes living in alignment with the natural world, acknowledging the interconnectedness of all living beings and the responsibility to maintain harmony within the environment.
2 - Stewardship and Conservation: Native American spirituality emphasizes the role of humans as stewards of the Earth rather than dominant rulers. The concept of stewardship recognizes our responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world for future generations. Many Native American tribes have traditionally practiced sustainable land and resource management, showing respect for the Earth's gifts and ensuring their responsible use.
Example: The Iroquois Confederacy's Great Law of Peace emphasizes the importance of considering the well-being of future generations in decision-making. This principle reflects a deep respect for the environment and a commitment to ensuring the continuity and sustainability of resources.
3 - Rituals and Ceremonies: Native American religions often incorporate rituals and ceremonies that foster a connection with nature and express gratitude for the Earth's abundance. These practices serve as reminders of our interconnectedness with the natural world and help cultivate a sense of reverence and respect for the environment.
Example: The Sun Dance ceremony, practiced by various Plains tribes, symbolizes renewal and the cycle of life. It involves fasting, prayer, and dancing in harmony with nature, reinforcing the bond between humans and the Earth.
4 - Spirituality in Everyday Life: Native American spirituality emphasizes the integration of spiritual beliefs into everyday life. It encourages a deep sense of awareness, gratitude, and mindfulness towards the natural world. This approach nurtures a profound respect for the Earth and fosters a sustainable way of living in harmony with nature.
Example: The concept of "Mitakuye Oyasin" among the Lakota people expresses the belief that all beings are interconnected and part of the same spiritual family. This understanding inspires a sense of responsibility and care for the well-being of all creatures and the environment.
Native American spirituality offers a valuable perspective on our relationship with the Earth, emphasizing ecological wisdom, stewardship, and a deep reverence for the interconnectedness of all life. By embracing these teachings and integrating them into our lives, we can cultivate a harmonious and sustainable approach to coexisting with the planet. The wisdom and practices of Native American religions serve as a profound source of inspiration and guidance as we navigate the environmental challenges of our time and strive to create a better future for generations to come.

I used to trip up on the "your body knows what it's doing, trust it" part of intuitive eating. I was thinking of the body as some kind of mindless creature that just blithely reaches for whatever good-sounding thing was in sight, and it was the mind's responsibility to corral these impulses and steer this soft animal in the right direction
and I think a good practice is to type out (or write out) the things that you think and then read them to yourself a few times because either they'll just continue to make sense or they'll... well, they'll look like what I just typed up there :V
because that doesn't make any sense at all. the Mind™ as this rational paternalistic construct that's keeping us civilised and healthy? that's a pretty nonsensical illusion. to say nothing of that reductionist and ecologically unsound view of both this body and animals in general. it's like that whole "nonhuman animals operate purely on instinct" business -- misguided at best, insulting at worst.
because I kept seeing the "your body knows what it's doing, trust it" rhetoric, I went, oh for the love of-- fine. what the hey. let's get radical. let's trust every signal the body gives. and you know what happened? sometimes I ate a whole sleeve of ritz crackers. it didn't kill me. sometimes I ate four different vegetables in a day. this is neutral and all that mattered in the end was that I enjoyed it. some days I ate so much I thought, surely there's something disordered about this. nope. just livin life, enjoying being food-secure after a decade of being the opposite. the body does know what it's doing. trusting it may be radical, but now I think it's necessary.
the body is a microcosm of the greater ecosystem of the planet. all the organisms that make up the body, they all have their needs. all these organisms joined together and something interesting emerged from them -- this mind. and this mind is doing something interesting in return -- turning back towards those organisms, recognising their importance, recognising its own part in maintaining this ecosystem. not to lord over it, or tame it, or beat it into submission. but to care for it, in the way that it requires. I, as an emergent entity, am at root simply a fairly clever steward.

Evening Prayer - 22 Apr 2024
Though I was stuck inside in the built world for most of the day, God, I am deeply grateful for the outside, for the created world—for your created world. May we always grow to be better stewards of the whole earth and may we always grow into deeper compassion for all the species of the earth. Amen.

Calling for widespread climate education as a critical step in the fight against climate change.
Tumblr media
This year, organizers of Earth Day are calling for widespread climate education as a critical step in the fight against climate change.
A new report, released in time for global attention for Earth Day on April 22, highlights the impact of climate education on promoting behaviour change in the next generation.
Despite people’s deep connection to their local environment — whether it’s blackouts in Toronto caused by raccoons, communities gearing up for a total solar eclipse lasting only minutes, chasing northern lights or hundreds of Manitoba kids excited about ice fishing — there remains inertia in climate action.
Sparking global momentum and energy in young people can go a long way to addressing climate change now and in the near future, says Bryce Coon, author of the report and Earth Day’s director of education.

Rock Our World: LAPC #295
This week Donna at Wind Kisses offered a beautiful post and tribute to nature for Earth Day. She asked us to share photos of rocks and what inspires us in her tribute called Rock Your World. Anyone who has followed me for a while knows that nature is my passion, my inspiration, and my foundation. I didn’t pay much attention to rocks until I moved to the Ozarks. With limestone rocks seemingly…
