THE ROAD SO FAR… (2)
Twice as many stills as the last recap! 16 months. 164 paintings. Averaging at ~2 hours per piece, that’s 328 hours of work, condensed into a three minute long recap. I’m over halfway through my quest to paint one still from every single episode of Supernatural! 🎉

About Lip Flap...
So, Ending 72 of Detective Conan got me thinking about lip flap:
youtube
What do I mean by that? Well, in some circles of the AMV-making world, it's maybe viewed as a "sin" to leave lip flaps unedited when there are no audible words. You either cut out the movements entirely, or you sync up the movements to match the lyrics of the song. Lip flap is distracting and immersion breaking.
Yet... this Detective Conan ending—mixing anime and music just like an AMV!—has lots of lip flap. Characters are talking and living and spouting out conversations, and there's no effort at all to hide or remove that. In fact, this sequence was deliberately animated that way.
And it's far from the only Detective Conan example in this vein. Which brings me to my next thought: early episodes of Detective Conan include instances of montages or characters otherwise moving their mouths without sound, but the FUNimation English dub seemingly found this so uncomfortable that words were added in:
Sometimes, I really love this choice! Conan's voice fading into Shinichi's in Episode 39 is one of my all-time favorite moments in the dub. Similarly, Conan's added little "but"s in Episode 32 are adorable.
But I feel like the montage in Episode 37 is weakened by the added dialogue because we didn't need any words to understand the story, and while Episode 42 might be argued to be more compelling and "show don't tell" without Conan's narration, we do miss a fair amount of information from that narration.
Overall, though, I think the changes indicate a cultural difference. Lip flap without audible words is fine for Japanese audiences, but overseas, it's seen as awkward and jarring.
So, is it a "sin" to include unedited lip flap in your AMVs? Well, it probably depends on who you ask!
But personally, my mindset has changed to not at all. I think there are moments where the indication of words can be quite powerful, just like in Detective Conan Ending 72 or the montage in Episode 37. While I mostly try to remove or sync lip flap in my own AMVs, there are also definitely times where I leave it. What's wrong with showing that there was a conversation?
That said... I gotta come clean. One of my first reactions to Ending 72 was to almost cringe at all the lip flap! But then I thought about it some more. While I'm rather inexperienced with making MMVs (Manga Music Videos), ever since I started, I've been a fan of leaving the speech bubbles unedited, text and all—despite the fact that this, similarly, seems to be somewhat of a "sin." I liked providing context, I liked that there were creative things you could do with the dialogue... and hey, is that really so different from leaving in some lip flap from time to time?
In the end, AMV editing is very subjective. Everyone has their own preferences and styles that speak to them, and that's part of what makes the art form so beautiful to me. But Ending 72 made me step back and reconsider some of the "rules" that I'd drilled into my head. Maybe what I've become so used to seeing as a "flaw" can actually be quite powerful in its own right!
#ramblings#amv talk#long post#video#detective conan#case closed#funimation english dub script#hmm maybe i should make a tag for rambling about amvs...#but this is an essay i've been rotating around in my head for a while! but honestly i feel like i didn't have that much to say ^^;#what took the longest was compiling and subbing that video... wish i could have subbed that insert song better#but there are no lyrics for the english version included anywhere officially afaik#and crunchyroll didn't translate the japanese version either... i tried my best 😭#but yeah i think this is a part of amv editing that probably isn't considered unless you're into the hobby#i definitely didn't think about it at first! even though i *loved* watching amvs! i think i made a few amvs before i was like#'hmm isn't it neat if i edit the mouth movements to line up with the song a bit?'#and then i kind of tried to remove and sync as much lip flap as possible because i got more into editing and saw the mindsets around it#but i think the tl;dr here is that any editing choice can be really powerful and work depending on how it's used#and i think that definitely goes for lip flap too!#but i hope this is interesting for folks not into editing as well! i found the funimation thing pretty curious#even before i was an amv editor. but now that i *do* edit amvs i'm like hmmmmmmmmmm#haha anyway gosh again i need to get back to my hd english dub project... gonna use the tag for#my edits#because the eng dub was all mixed in hd by me! and apparently will never be done officially because of the changed names#i'm over halfway there right 😭 76/123... (feel free to message me about it too haha....)

has anyone made an AMV of Sam Reid's Lestat set to "2econd 2ight 2eer" by Will Wood yet or do I have to do all the fucking work around here (I do not in fact make AMVs and I said that for comedic effect; if you like IWTV and make AMVs I highly recommend checking out that song.)

And I have to thank everyone I have been pestering about the event for the past five months - I'm happy you all took the time to participate, it really means a lot! 🧡💜
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL PARTICIPANTS (AND LURKERS TOO)
In 2022, Taikouvember had been announced on short notice, leading to not many people knowing about the event. And even if several people were participating, causing a nice little atmosphere, we wanted to make sure that this year would be even more enjoyable for everyone involved. And we believe this has worked out wonderfully!
Tumblr media
Thus we wanted to thank everyone who took the time to draw, write, make edits, compile posts and so on and so on. We know lives are busy and yet, you all did your best to contribute and that is worth all the praise in the world. Our favourite ship might not be the most popular one out there, but we are proud to have a small community dedicated to showing their love for it. And it doesn't matter what you did, how much or how little you did, if you could finish it in time or just handed in drafts: It's all wonderful.
We hope you've had as much of a fun time as we had! A big shout-out goes out to:

broadchurch consumption guide
for when you desperately need to consume broadchurch content; a menu of all the things you can eat and in which (recommended) order
1. THE SHOW
this is obviously where you've gotta start. all three seasons are on amazon prime, as well as ITVX - if you can't get those, it's also on a bunch of pirating websites. there are three seasons, and DVDs are available of all. season one is probably objectively the best, while the rest wander a bit, but they're all really good.
2. DELETED SCENES
there are LOADS of deleted scenes from each season. it's kinda surprising that some of them were cut cos they contain such useful and interesting info. you get to see more of alec, more of tess, loads more of becca/paul. these are available on youtube in several different compilations
3. THE NOVELISATION
OK, now you've watched the show. need more? erin kelly's novelisation is available in several different languages (most notably english, german and french) and in both physical and PDF form. I haven't got the PDF but i assume it exists. you can get either a hardcover or a paperback, although the hardcover looks a lot nicer. the book covers all of season 1 with a few small changes. some small things are added, as well as character thoughts, while some are removed - such as alec's awkward encounter with becca in the hotel.
***there is also an audiobook of this, read by carolyn pickles (who plays maggie)***
4. THE SHORT STORIES
don't worry!! season 2 has got some written content as well. the short stories are available as both individual books and a full collection on the amazon kindle store. they are only available as ebooks, although PDFs also exist somewhere. there are 8 stories, all linked with an episode of s2. they focus on specific characters, starting with ellie and ending with alec.
5. ADAPTATIONS
alright now we are getting desperate. there are a few adaptations of broadchurch (I believe a french one??) but the most notable one is most definitely gracepoint. it sucks ass but sometimes the desperation hits. it follows the same plot but with worse acting (even from DT, who is now american) and small, strange variations. they do some stuff interestingly tho, like having (daisy) discover (alec's) illness and also his surgery making a lot more sense. gracepoint is also on amazon prime and stars skylar white from breaking bad as a poorly cast ellie
6. BTS & EXTRAS
OK this probably should have gone with the deleted scenes, my order is falling apart, but there is also behind the scenes footage and lots of DVD extras. there's also the graham norton broadchurch skit, the chilli jam roulette, behind the scenes photos, etc etc. lots of fun stories to hear and read.
7. SOUNDTRACK
there are also CD and vinyl versions of the soundtracks available. i got my broadchurch OST CD off worldofbooks. good stuff
8. ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND
this sections includes: old articles, chat forums, instagram posts from the actors (example: charlotte beaumonts cast photos + broadchurch t-shirts), websites selling original props, broadchurch-based photography of west bay, the broadchurch tourist trail, 80 dozen articles proclaiming the 'next broadchurch', etc. this also includes reviews of the show and that weird piss-take episode guide
9. THE FAN STUFF
OK, now you've really run out of content. but do not fear. this section includes: fanart, fanfiction (there's loads if you ship alec and ellie), fan merchandise, gimmick blogs, meta analysis, memes, edits, amvs, normal mvs, anything your heart desires
And that is how you consume broadchurch. reblog if i missed any steps of consumption. im in so deep that writing this is entertainment

honestly i think it's a bit of a lost art with some younger fans these days to just like............do things? people hold themselves back from making amvs, gifs, writing fic or drawing art, etc etc because "they don't know how" but the truth is a lot of us didn't have that knowledge handed to us, we looked at what other people were doing and then tried to copy that in our own way. and yeah the first hundred thousand words you write are probably going to be kind of shit. and the first gifsets you make will probably be grainy. your amvs will be clumsily edited, and your first year or two of drawing will make you cringe in the future. but if you don't try, you'll never improve! and these days there's so many more resources out there with the internet being so large—art tutorials for specific things, gifmaking guides handed around that compile the steps down the the finest details, writers who talk about their processes, amv makers/vidders who are more than happy to share what transitions or text overlays they use. and i sometimes want to take people by the shoulders and say, just try! take the first leap! the worst you can do is make it badly, and made badly is better than not made at all.

Made a compilation of the White Rabbit from episodes from 1-5
Please enjoy this. I'm trying hard to encourage AMVs again
Edit: This is mostly because of YouTube heavily copyrighting the scenes, not because of the gore, but because of the streaming site. So you know what I say about this? Fuck it. We sail the seven seas.

I've made an observation over my years in fandom and so:
how correlated are neurodivergence and fandom?
this is under any kind of neurodivergence (any long term neurological difference from the societal "norm", and generally regarded as mental/neurological illness/disability)
(taking "engaging with fandom" as anything from/between creating gifs, edits, media-related videos (like amvs, compilations or video essays), parody songs, fanfiction, fanart, essays/theories about the media, and consuming a large amount/variety of fanworks (being any of the above), and there's probably more that I can't currently recall. it can be as simple as going out of your way to looking for fanmedia after consuming media)
(NOTE: this is not and should not be used as diagnostic criteria. this is me looking for a larger range of people to test a theory)
ids and explanations under the cut
option 1: I am clinically diagnosed and engage in fandom
option 2: I am self/peer diagnosed and engage in fandom
a lot of people self diagnose when there can be difficulty getting an official diagnosis (waiting lists, costs, doctors who won't take them seriously or other disadvantages). these conclusions are generally come to after a lot of research and deliberation.
to add "peer diagnosis" is generally within the autism community where some autistic people can consider they are autistic after a group of friends (who may be diagnosed autistic) notice comparisons with their friend's behaviour and together they deliberate whether they meet the criteria, again with a lot of research. this may also exist with other neurodivergence but I've mostly seen it with autism
option 3: I think I might be but haven't properly looked into it and engaged with fandom
this is for the people who have seen several of those posts describing symptoms of disorders and have been able to relate to them but haven't properly looked into it for whatever reason
option 4: I am neurotypical and engage with fandom
option 5: I am neurodivergent and do not engage with fandom
option 6: I am neurotypical and do not engage with fandom/show results

Hello! I noticed that there were no scoring rules for musical compositions for the steal works. Is creating music acceptable as a steal submission? And if so, I have a suggestion for how to score it (definitely not because I'm working on submitting original music...) based off of how scoring is done for visual mediums. Based off of how the photoset and amvs are scored, would it be reasonable to score parody songs (as in, changing the lyrics to a song that already exists) as 0.1% per 10 seconds (based off the the percentage per edited photo in a photoset, since both are drawing on material that already exists, and using the timing of the video scorings), songs that are heavily quoting other music (ex. if they weren't eliminated, a marisette song that referenced the heart full of love tune in it's own melody) as 0.3% per 10 seconds (based off the amvs/fanvids with existing footage scoring, since both take existing material and change it around into something original), and wholly original music as 0.5% per 10 second (based off the animatics scoring, since both use only material that the creator made themselves). And I guess liner notes/song analysis accompanying the music could also do the 0.1% per 200 words elaborating on the songs like the playlist scoring. Sorry for the long ask, I was just wondering if music would be an acceptable submission but didn't want to stress anyone out trying to come up with new scoring all of a sudden so I thought if I asked I should suggest scoring as well based off the scoring that exists.
hiya, fantastic question!
admittedly we did not create the scoring system (so please do not get too mad at us for anything you feel doesn't reflect this) but to my understanding it is meant to reflect time/effort involved moreso than originality of work. so, for example, animatics are worth more points than a video edit because the creator also has to draw the various frames rather than compile existing footage together, and fanfiction is scored incrementally by word count because it takes more time to write 1000 words of fic than it does a 100 word drabble.
fun fact but one of your mod team is literally a professional musician who partially specialises in arranging & orchestration so in MY humble opinion i would be more inclined to score it along these lines, but also it's 2:30am so i might change this when i've had more sleep:
0.1% per 10 seconds for original music/arrangement* with 1-2 instruments (e.g. a piano solo, a pop song where you accompany yourself on guitar, a work for violin & piano accompaniment)
0.3% per 10 seconds for original music/arrangement* for chamber ensemble/small band of 3-8 parts (e.g. a string quartet, an SATB choral work, a song performed by you and the rest of the 4 piece rock band you're in)
0.5% per 10 seconds of original music/arrangement* for a large ensemble of 9+ parts (e.g. a work for orchestra or marching band)
*classing original music/arrangement as either an entirely new composition OR a significantly altered arrangement or orchestration - e.g. anything that would fall into the 0.3% or 0.5% category of your proposed scoring system.
in addition i'd say
0.1% per 100 words of lyrics (entirely original or parody)
0.1% per 200 words of liner notes/analysis
for cover songs, a flat 0.1% per 30 seconds, unless you have provided a significantly new arrangement or orchestration (e.g. if you cover "a heart full of love" as a marisette steal accompanying yourself from guitar chords or the piano/vocal score, that would just be the flat rate. if you decide to create a whole new a cappella arrangement of a heart full of love from scratch that would be regarded as new music/arrangement)
