I think Effy loved Freddie very much. He isn’t anything like her- he's not manipulative or cunning, and he doesn't want anything from her except to love her and understand her. I think that for Effy, that's something that feels big and profound and scary, which is why she tries so hard to get those feelings to go away. If she was obsessed, I think she could handle that. But being in love is terrifying for her.

Why did love make effy so bad? I mean, when she was with Freddie, she loved him, but then her health began to deteriorate.

I don't think that it did, even though that was the story she was telling herself about it. People who experience psychosis usually have a thing that the psychosis is about- for example, some people who experience psychosis think that other people are reading their thoughts, or that they're being surveilled by the CIA, or that a celebrity they've never met is in love with them. But that doesn't mean they're true. That's just the form the psychosis takes. Likewise, for Effy, I think the form her psychosis takes is an intense fear that allowing herself to love and be loved will result in otherworldly beings "breaking through" and eating her (?). But obviously that's not true, even though she believes that it is. I think her mental health was getting worse first and then she got into a relationship with Freddie, not the other way around.

Summary: Cook says to himself that he isn't gay, until he meets you.

Cook was the type of guy who gets into fights for girls, who hook up with girls, who flirts with every girl he could.

He isn't gay, that's what he says to himself everyday "I am not gay, I like girls", until you arrive at school.

You moved in their city and since then you became friend with Freddy, Effy, Emily and the others, and obviously with Cook.

At first Cook thought you were a cool guy, a good friend, but soon he realised he liked you, and for that he hated himself.

Every time he saw you, he fell for you even harder, he didn't even know why, he never had feelings toward guys.

But he thought you were straight as a line, he thought you had a crush on Effy, you were always around her.

Until one day he found you kissing a guy, he was your new boyfriend, the only ones who knew were Effy, Freddy and Emily, and now Cook.

<<Wait y/n, you're gay?>> He asked, you nodded.

<<This is my boyfriend, Robbie>> You told him.

<<Oh, ok...>> He said, he was jealous, why Robbie? And not him?

After 2 months of dating you and Robbie broke up, he cheated on you with some other guy.

When you told Cook, he said none could cheat on his bestfriend, so he went up to Robbie and beat him up, without you knowing, he took some punches too, but he totally gave Robbie what he deserved.

When you saw Cook with a black eye and blood on his for head you were worried, took care of him.

You were forced by your friends to spend one night together, to forget Robbie.

By midnight everyone was drunk, except for you and Cook.

You two were sitting on the couch, Cook was smoking some weed and laughing at some of your jokes.

At some point Cook looked at your lips, you were so close and none was paying attention, so you leaned in and kissed him.

When you realized, you immediately broke the kiss.

And with that night you started dating, crazy, James Cook wasn't straight, that was everyone thought when they saw you around.

Cook was some inches shorter than you and he liked to hide his face in your chest, and if some jerk shouted at you from their car, things like "faggots", Cook was ready to beat them up.

As soon as he saw her he knew who she was. It was unmistakeable. The way she walked, how she moved, the air in which she carried herself. There were things that you just didn’t forget about someone. Effy Stonem had been a lot of things for Cook. She had been confusing, yet not hard to understand. There was a darkness inside of both of them, and Cook had accepted her for that darkness. He hadn’t needed her to change because he understood that darkness all too well. Another similarity they had had was their love of the same boy. It was two different kinds of love, but a love nonetheless. It was strange to him. How he and Effy had both loved Freddie and how he and Freddie had both loved Effy. He used to wonder about who loved Cook?? It was a stupid wonder though really, Cook knew better than to ponder on that now. Cook was nothing, pure shit. That was just the way of the world, the way things had to be. He started towards her, walking across the middle of the park like he was on a mission. He stopped in front of her, he couldn’t help the way his gaze naturally softened as he tried to meet her eyes.
