🧠 FREE WRITING LESSON — THE MOST POWERFUL CHARACTER DEPTH TRICK YOU’LL EVER READ.

Let’s say your character sucks.

She’s flat. Predictable. “Strong” in all the wrong ways. Let’s call her Nicolle. Or Carol. Or whatever name Hollywood gave her.

She’s a superhero. She’s got powers. She’s got sarcasm. She takes no shit. She leads the squad. She’s admired by everyone — and loved by no one.

You’ve seen this character before. Now watch what happens when you give her one secret she doesn’t brag about.

Nicolle has two sons.

She’s raising them alone — to become men like her late father: A man who sacrificed everything to raise her after her mother disappeared, broke, or gave up.

The world sees Nicolle as the apex of visual empowerment. But the world doesn’t see:

The arguments with her boys’ father — about what being a real dad means.

The prayers whispered in the dark over a fevered forehead.

The way she ghosted the only man she maybe wanted, not because she’s flaky — but because she doesn’t know if wanting love makes her a bad mother.

The nights she tucks her boys in, then collapses into her bed, staring at the ceiling, heart full of ache, because she gave the world her strength but kept no one to hold hers.

They don’t see the days her sons cry after watching her get slammed through buildings on TV.

Held by the throat. Left for dead. Motionless for seconds too long. Until she rises — because she has to.

They don’t see the breakdowns. They don’t see her flinch.

They assume she doesn’t feel fear. But the truth?

She feels it every single time.

She’s not fearless. She’s never been. But fear is a luxury she doesn’t have.

That’s a luxury for men. She is a god. And she will make any threat scream that truth — as she crushes it beneath her bleeding hands.

Because when demons invade, tyrants rise, and monsters descend, She suits up.

Not for hashtags. Not for feminism. Not for attention.

She suits up because the idea of her sons growing up in a world she could’ve fought for and didn’t — is more terrifying than death itself.

fire at will and where we went wrong actually have a lot of similarities in structure and im only now realizing how deep that goes. i have one whole gimmick

#personal #the main similarity being that mikey is 100% the protagonist and leo is 100% the main emotional antagonist #i mean mikey doesn't really SEEM like it in faw so far; but on the hero's side he is definitely the leading force #its kind of the point that he'll end up having a mostly offscreen arc because faw is from the perspective of the villains #listen it's just ... more fun to write deeper emotional conflicts from an outside perspective .... although in wwww.#donnie and mikey are a lot closer to the conflict because it's overtly About them. in faw there's really not much they can do #if you like faw's plot structure you will probably really like wwww at least! it'll even have a happy ending #and its more silly and comedic

One of the other things I wrote while away was brain-dump of bullet points on Lymond thoughts (as also I finished reading Game of Kings - what a bloody stellar ending, reuniting him with his mother!!!!), but without digging up my notebook, the key lingering take-away was:

This book did ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that all those writing guides tell you NOT to do

#lymond chronicles #pacing what pacing? pacing is boring just pay attention to this bit yeah?#climax? you missed it: richard's emotional revelation and francis screaming after richard reopened his wounds SYMOBOSMLISMSSSSssssss #ah the *plot* climax? a zero-action scene of endless dialogue and a lawyer getting an erection and wanting to marry lymond for his Brain #love interest? ahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa #literal gay accusations? sure why not #having the man who betrayed you decide to play STRIP POKER for 12 hours to save your life? all while he's wildly confused about why-#-he's doing it? sure!!!#maddest bloody novel ever #it is a technical masterpiece in how it holds together at all I want to smack it open like a walnut and try to see what i can learn #*structurally*. except if i do i know it will lose its unexpected delightful nature #so i'll just stand back and delight in how it pulled off everything writers are told never to do

Ok this is gonna sound like a shitty question by I'm being 100% genuine: was anyone actually surprised when Isha died? I remember going online and seeing people who were in shock and horror that they killed her but like...the second I saw her appear onscreen I knew she was destined to die in some tragically horrible way. You don't just introduce a random kid into the life of your most mentally unstable and traumatized character and let her live

#like I didn't have a big emotional response when it happened because I knew it had to be coming eventually #of course seeing jinx's reaction was brutal but I cried way more during episode 9 than I did when Isha sacrificed herself #idk maybe it's just because I know how stories and plot structures work because I'm a writer #but come on was anyone actually like seriously blindsided by it #wirepost #arcane spoilers #arcane

u ever read a book that has cool ideas and compelling characters and the writing itself is decent but. there is just a total lack of actual storytelling skill. and it's 1000+ pages.

#i shant say which book but #i got 600 pages in before i realized what had been bothering me about it #and why so many ostensibly meaningful moments fell sorta flat #the relevant info was just dropped on you all at once #so whatever emotions the writer wanted to evoke were just. absent #bc there was no build up there is no payoff #also there are no distinct voices #and all the characters monologue too much #sigh #the premise is interesting so i wanted to like it #i was struggling to identify what felt off about it #bc it wasnt exactly “structure” or “plot” per se #all that stuff is relative #it's the skill of storytelling #of using words and setting and plot and structure and voices to evoke something #not just lining up all the events and narrating them #anyways #i lost sleep over this :|

Time for my daily thoughts about how Jaws is rife with potential for an anti imperialist anti capitalist analysis

#TAGS RANT INCOMING:#the 2 shark incidents which have the most emotional impact are: the main plot w Bruce n the Boys AND quint in the Indianapolis incident #the sharks in these stories are secondary to the human conflict that propelled the story forward #1: a mayor’s greed and desire for money and 2: a country’s greed and desire for domination.#the sharks are vessels that convey the powerlessness that the individual feels in the face of structural and societal violence #i think there’s also an interesting parallel there. shark attacks are incidental -#they have no desire to eat humans but sometimes mistake them for a food source #meanwhile the death of Alex kintner- which Mrs. kintner blames on Brody - was also not intentional #and was caused by Brody initially mistaking the mayor and the medical examiner’s coercion as somewhat genuine/truthful #humans and sharks both have the capacity to do harm #but it’s the environment around them that should be examined when this harm is done #don’t even get me started on quint’s ptsd and ‘I’ll never wear a life jacket again’ and perpetuating cycles of violence #ummm teehee anyways #jaws 1975 #I’m no deep analytic writer and I in fact struggle with themes and interpretation so this may all seem pretty surface level but anyways #i just wanted to yap

i completely and absolutely hallucinated the last time i read firestar apparently bc i was ten thousand percent sure russ shot beargstrom at the end. i thought that man was so dead. so imagine my surprise rereading tfe properly rn.

(i was already too confused by whos who irt the bears last time anyway so if anything its making me feel LESS stupid that i just misread a paragraph and fucked up the entire plotline for myself <- it will happen again)

consider this a public acknowledgment that it turns out idk what the hell is happening in these books, soz <3 i will continue to lie by accident and make shit up 🥰
