That moment when you have to let people be wrong about you because correcting them would make you seem like an unbearable show-off
I was at a bookstore with a friend the other day and I was looking at a book in German that I was interested in buying, but then I saw that it was a translation and had originally been written in French
I commented idly to my friend "Sometimes I don't buy a book because it's a translation and I always prefer to read in the original language when possible" and she said in an agreeing-with-me way, "Yeah it would make more sense to read it in English"
and I realized she assumed I meant English when I said "original language"
but I couldn't bring myself to say "Yeah, or French or Dutch or Spanish or Italian or Portuguese or one of the other languages I read..." because like. who says that kind of thing.
#it's odd but i've suddenly been noticing a lot of people underestimating me lately#like i told a friend i was studying compsci/programming#and she started sending me like... links to absolute beginner 'how to start learning to code' resources#which of course is very sweet and i really appreciate her supportiveness!#so i certainly don't want to say 'lol i passed that point 10 years ago but thanks'#or my friends know perfectly well that i'm a language professional and have spent time studying many languages#but somehow they don't seem to make the connection that that translates into having actual abilities?#like i can piece together the meaning of a sentence in russian or chinese and they'll go 'wtf' like i'm a wizard or something#or i've mentioned a few times that i read for fun in various languages but that seems to just go in one ear and out the other for most folk#and they still can't conceive that i would read a WHOLE BOOK in a language that's not german or english#these are just two examples but i've seen it happen with several other things too#and i'm just... not sure how normal people handle this sort of thing?#how do you let your friends know what you're capable of without coming across as an arrogant prick#i'm not seeking approbation and so i don't tend to boast#but i think maybe i err too hard in the opposite direction?#maybe i've been accidentally implying all these years that i'm Very Amateur in all my interests/hobbies#i don't know how to strike a reasonable balance#but it does feel kind of. weirdly alienating. to suddenly realize most of my friends really don't Know me in this way#cosmo gyres#personal#tag rant#i guess what annoys me is that i'm very careful not to do this to others#if someone tells me about a certain interest or hobby of theirs i assume by default that they must know So Much about it#and if i dare to send them or suggest them anything i always preface it with 'you probably already know this but...'#or 'this may well be something that's painfully obvious to someone with your expertise but...'#and i would try to never make any statement or suggestion that implies i think they're at a low level in [whatever that thing is]#so it bothers me a bit when other people don't take the same consideration. i guess.#(not enough to do anything about it beyond blogging with mild annoyance. but hey)

I've been seeing a lot of discourse about the Murderbot casting, to the tune of "Wells says she imagined it as brown"/"the narrator of the audiobook is a man"/"the writing just sounds female, the types of things it notices and cares to mention and the way it puts its sentences together is how a woman would"/"it's canonically agender wtf"/"agender people can look masculine you asshole"/"it's supposed to look big and average that means white male"/"that's your own cultural bias in play and evidence says the average in its universe is brown"/"that's your bias in play there's no ironclad indication what the average is in the Corporation Rim"/"here's every single canon description of Murderbot it has no canon physical attributes other than Tall it could be played by literally anyone Checkmate Atheists" etc etc etc and it all just... misses the point?
No one is annoyed with Skarsgård!MB because "white dude" isn't canon.
They're annoyed because written Murderbot presents a level of identification and recognition for them that "white dude" does not.
Or, in other words: it is difficult to imagine a level of abuse more profound than not having the freedom of your own literal thoughts, consigned to a cripplingly limited and cruel social role from which any deviation is met with brutal pain. And it is all too easy to imagine a demographic who are presumed violent, hostile, and inferior, good only for labor and violence, who must be controlled and denied and unpersoned for the good of the rest. The lines aren't hard to draw, here; Murderbot is deeply relatable to many people who are not (visibly masculine) white men, specifically because they are not (visibly masculine) white men. Because they share with it the experience of oppression, marginalization, and being known on sight as wrong, being punished for the slightest deviance. Because it is not just another in the long boring line of ten thousand thousand grizzled white space marine heroman types; it is the thematic opposite of that.
And yeah duh obviously you can look like a boilerplate white dude and still suffer plenty of oppression, but film is a visual medium. Character design is a crucial part of its language, especially when a specific character is the only example of its type available to the audience. It is a shorthand that the audience will understand as a reflection on the wider setting. Which means that casting Skarsgård is, whether they meant it or not, a subtle statement that the ultimate bigotry in Murderbot's universe is against and about conventional white dudes.
Or in other other words, you cannot refute complaints about Skarsgård!MB with ~canon~ because canon has nothing to do with it. It's a thematic inconsistency, a failure to understand the not the story's text, but its subtext and its place in the wider cultural conversation of sci-fi (or at least to accurately translate those meta considerations to the satisfaction of a decent segment of the audience).
Like you can still yell about how bullshit you think that is if you want. Casting's not that deep or it's an important queer metaphor to pass and still struggle or people have no inherent 'right' to representation or whatever else. I'm not telling anyone what to say or believe. But just understand that that's what you're actually arguing with (or for, for that matter), is all I'm saying.

In Japanese language, describing a third person’s emotion is different from describing a first person’s emotion: in English, the sentences "I am happy" and "He is happy" are grammatically structured in the same way. However, in Japanese, this direct equivalence is not possible: you can say "私は嬉しいです" (Watashi wa ureshii desu), but you can't simply say "彼は嬉しいです" (Kare wa ureshii desu).
This is due to cultural and linguistic nuances that emphasize the acknowledgment of another's internal state as somewhat inaccessible. In fact, Japanese typically employs expressions that convey a level of inference or indirectness, such as:
Using observational phrases: one might say 「彼は嬉しそうです」 (Kare wa ureshisō desu), which translates to "He seems happy" or "He/she looks happy." This phrasing respects the notion that one can only observe outward signs of emotion, not definitively know another's internal state.
Adding "ようだ" or "みたい": these suffixes add a sense of speculation. For example, 「彼は嬉しいようだ」 (Kare wa ureshii yō da) or 「彼は嬉しいみたいです」 (Kare wa ureshii mitai desu), both meaning "He appears to be happy."
Using conditional clauses: Another approach is to use conditional forms, like 「彼が嬉しければ」 (Kare ga ureshikereba), meaning "If he is happy," which implicitly acknowledges the uncertainty of truly knowing his feelings.
One characteristic of Japanese syntax is its extreme sensitivity to epistemological considerations based on the ego/nonego distinction or the distinction of I/the other. Our knowledge about the mental state of another person must necessarily come from our interpretation of external evidence, and this is well reflected in the Japanese language.

@marshymashers hope it's okay to respond to you in a post, my answer was getting too long, so here we are. :)
First off, Tubbo isn't autistic. He has stated on multiple occasions [clip] [clip] that he isn't and it is none of our business to question him or diagnose him. That is incredibly disrespectful to Tubbo and anyone actually diagnosed with autism. He has stated that all the way back in 2022 that he is not, so please refrain from going around diagnosing people in real life and spreading false information. It is none of our business what diagnosis someone does or does not have unless they want to come forward and tell us.

Yes, Tubbo is dyslexic, as am I, which does mean he is neurodivergent, however dyslexia and autism are not the same.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH): "Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave." [link]
According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH): "Some of the most common learning disabilities are the following: Dyslexia. People with dyslexia have problems with reading words accurately and with ease (sometimes called “fluency”) and may have a hard time spelling, understanding sentences, and recognizing words they already know." [link]
In my post, notice I am not talking about neurodivergence as a whole, but specifically autism and the effect it has on communication and behavior. I also did not and have not said that autism excuses behavior nor is any type of shield to be used to paint Dream as innocent. Again, my point here was not about the wrongdoings, but about the communication I have seen over the past few days that speaks to a pattern that I have experienced over and over for 20 years that only after my diagnosis and people willing to hear me out as a result has subsided. I am talking about a 3 hour stream where Tubbo and Dream repeated the same things to each other over and over and couldn't seem to understand each other no matter how many times they said it. That is what I am talking about. Because I believe not that autism should be used as a shield but as a lens to view the situation more clearly.
All I'm saying is if people went into the discussion with the mindset that this could be a moment of autism misunderstanding not malicious or manipulative intent, then it would be more productive. Instead over and over the assumption is that Dream has ill intent so everything that is rumored and hinted at or said is viewed under that lens.
For example, it is a very common characteristic of an autistic person (or person with adhd) to mix up names. So, on one hand, people could see Dream calling Tubbo "Tommy" multiple times in that stream as Dream not seeing them as separate people and only seeing Tubbo as Tommy's best friend, and using Tubbo as a way to talk to Tommy, or whatever. But in reality, I can say with absolute certainty that Dream just screwed up the names on accident, as is common place for autistic people. There was no ill intent behind it in the slightest, it was simply an accident. That's all. Do you see the difference? By constantly viewing Dream under a lens of malicious intention we are mistaking what could just be a more innocent moment of autistic difference for wrongdoing. And all I'm saying is that until people give Dream the benefit of the doubt or grace that it could be an autism miscommunication, things will never resolve or change.
And yes, execution is at the end of the day the result and it doesn't matter whether you meant to hurt someone or not, you still did. But knowing intention is the difference between Dream being an imperfect autistic guy versus a movie villain. And whether rumors about him should be taken at face value to be true or whether we should give Dream the benefit of the doubt first.
In addition, if we don't take into consideration that Dream sees a situation differently because he's autistic and therefore an explanation of his wrongdoing may not make sense to him, then we are going to just assume he isn't taking accountabilty when in fact, he really just doesn't understand. In the same way, that Tubbo doesn't understand his reasoning.
For example, with the perception that Dream and his friends are misongynistic and sexist:
Tubbo's reasoning:
there are multiple accusations you haven't refuted of you calling a woman a whore + you singled out Aimsey and Hannahrose in your stream + you disrespected Caiti in that situation by getting involved and sending hateful fans after her + downplayed your involvement and the situation's point by not including it in your vid => you are sexist and misongynistic and need to clean up your act with how you treat woman.
Dream's reasoning:
there are multiple accusations you don't refute of you calling a woman a whore there is one accusation that I don't remember but don't want to call someone a liar, from awhile ago when I used whore more in my joking slang with my close friends + you singled out Aimsey and Hannahrose in your stream in my stream I mentioned many creators, including Aimsey and Hannahrose, to highlight my points about rumors, misconceptions and mispeaking + you disrespected Caiti in that situation by getteing involved and sending hate after her I provided information as I was a witness of a situation involving my best friend + downplayed your involvement and the situation's point by not including it in your vid I didn't include it in the video as Tommy didn't call me out for doing something in it and the situation is George's and Caiti's to discuss not mine => you are sexist and misgynistic and need to clean up your act with how you treat woman contrary to Tommy's statement I am not sexist or misogynistic, nor are my friends as there is no proof.
I don't think Dream is trying to dodge accountability, because (unlike some creators) over and over we have seen him own up, apologize and admit he was wrong or out of line and try to make things right in a reasonable manner. He has proven that he can and does take accountability, in this instance he just simply doesn't see why he needs to as he doesn't follow Tubbo's train of thought and reaches a different conclusion, in the same way Tubbo isn't following Dream's train of thought... anyways I really hope that makes sense or clears things up for at least someone lol. :)
#dreamwastaken#and I think some of yall are coming at it as if I was in attack but just to be clear I am not attacking or bashing tubbo#I think he did a great job and was very reasonable and patient#this is just my observation of things as someone who has experienced things like this all the time and has gone to counseling for years to#work on myself#.... also can I just say I really dislike therapy being thrown around like a derogatory its rude and tommy#tubbo and dream shouldn't be doing that#dtblr#dreamblr#am I making sense or just too sleepy... I dont know...

Writing Dialogue: Compliments
Compliment - a verbal or written remark that expresses admiration, respect, or praise for another person or group.
The definition of compliment includes the general expression of good wishes or affirmations on quality, as in the example sentence, “My compliments to the chef.”
Studies show that compliments can activate the brain’s reward center, promote positivity, and help build self-esteem and overall good mental health.
Types of Compliments
You can compliment anyone, from family members to coworkers to strangers on the street. Some compliments include the following:
Accomplishments: You can compliment someone about their past or recent achievements. You could compliment a significant personal win like reaching a career goal or a minor victory like guessing the word of the day on a challenging crossword puzzle.
Appearance: You can view these compliments as flattering comments about how someone looks on a particular occasion or about attributes like beautiful eyes, skin, or hair.
Creativity: Compliments about creativity might include kind statements about someone’s artistic ability or creative solutions to issues, projects, or problems.
Intelligence: When you compliment someone’s intelligence, you could give them a sincere compliment about a specific situation or playfully tell them they’re a smart cookie in a general sense.
Personality: Compliments about someone’s personality cover many areas and might include statements about the person having a great sense of humor, being a great listener, or always seeing the silver lining in difficult situations.
Whole person: You can compliment someone about how you view them, such as telling them they’re an awesome friend or a great sister.
Examples of Compliments to Give
The best compliments come from the heart and are unique and specific to the person you’re addressing. Consider the following compliment suggestions:
You have a beautiful smile.
You always light up a room.
I love your style.
That color looks great on you.
I love your sense of humor; you always make me laugh.
I’m impressed by your ability to stay calm and focused when things are stressful.
Your ideas are so innovative and fresh.
You’re always so helpful.
I appreciate your honesty.
I always have fun when I’m with you.
You’re stronger than you think you are.
I’m grateful you’re in my life.
You’re an inspiration to me.
You add so much to our community; I’m glad you’re here.
I admire that you always speak up with your opinion.
I always feel comfortable being myself around you.
You’ve brought such joy into my life.
I love how curious you are about how things work.
You’re such a good team player and considerate of others.
You’re so patient when dealing with others’ problems.
How to Compliment Someone
Giving a compliment might feel awkward at first, but with practice, you’ll experience the benefits of improved relationships and an overall sense of wellness. Follow these guidelines when giving a compliment:
Be specific. The more detailed your compliment, the more impactful it feels to the person receiving it. Telling someone they’re a good listener is lovely, but telling them about a specific time when they made you feel heard them feels more meaningful.
Embrace sincerity. Most people can sense when a compliment is insincere, so tell the truth when giving praise. Avoid giving compliments you don’t believe, such as telling them they’re attractive when you don’t find them attractive or telling someone they did a good job when they failed at the task.
Include strangers. Avoid reserving compliments just for people you know well. A well-timed and honest compliment to someone you don’t know can make their day, even if it’s about something simple. Avoid complimenting people you don’t know well on their physical appearance.
Notice the good things. Pay attention to your family, friends, loved ones, and coworkers, and note their good qualities and accomplishments. When you spend a lot of time with people, it’s easy to only focus on problems or negative issues that need solutions. Incorporate taking in the positive and giving compliments regularly to forge stronger connections and make a habit of noticing the good.
How to Respond to a Compliment
In some cases, you may find receiving compliments creates anxiety, especially if you suffer from low self-esteem. Follow these tips when responding to a compliment:
Avoid rejecting the compliment. Sometimes receiving compliments feels uncomfortable, making you impulsively want to give credit to someone else, turn it into a joke, or tell the person why you don’t deserve the accolades. Though you may feel all these things internally, do your best to avoid verbalizing your self-doubt, which could make the other person feel foolish or rejected.
Express your gratitude. Accept the compliment as you would a gift, saying “thank you.” If you wish, you can expand on your appreciation by adding how the compliment made a difference (either as a positive emotion or as an encouragement to keep going).
It’s about the giver as much as it’s about you. When someone compliments you, they tell you how your behavior or actions impacted them, which may feel like a vulnerable act for them. Remember that how you respond can have an emotional effect on the receiver.
Redirect compliments meant for someone else. If someone compliments you about an action or work you didn’t do, redirect them to the right person while supporting their desire to give a compliment. For example, if someone compliments you about a work project you didn’t do, you might say, “That’s so nice of you to say that! Actually, Kim completed that job. I’m sure she’d love to hear your feedback.”

Fucking robot. Why does he always bother me during breaks? He doesn't even need breaks.
“Hi Xavier. Was there something that you needed?”
You know he likes you because he bothers to address you by your name. As opposed to a serialized string of numbers and letters.
The numbers before your shift code and initials make you wonder just how many of them there were before you. How many he tossed away after an unfortunate workplace accident. That tag on your uniform is more of a death sentence than anything.
'Like'... As if this tin can is actually able of feeling.
It's more realistic to say he sees value in you, for some reason, and employs some kind of social algorithm to fabricate a twisted sort of relationship.
" You have been consistently distracted lately. "
Is that a warning?
Two red abyss-like orbs cast a crimson filter upon your face. It always feels like Xavier is watching you a little too closely, monitoring more than just your verbal responses.
" Ah, my bad! " You force a wobbly smile. " I promise it doesn't get in the way of my wo- "
" It does. " He silences you immediately, imposing and unforgiving in his cold corrections. " Clients notice when you zone out. Your movement speed is drastically reduced and the chances of committing errors -which you have by now- is considerably increased. Spacing out this much is in no way acceptable behavior for a multitude of... "
Only the very real notion that he's noting your facial expressions stops you from rolling your eyes at the robot's tireless monolog regarding the dangers and consequences of being distracted at work. One of your eyes still manages to twitch, as if in defiance.
" Yes sir, I understand. " You try to cut in, try to abort that speech before it turns into a whole lecture.
One camera cranes down slightly. " Your reputation as the exemplary employee is being damaged. "
Xavier says this like it should make you anxious. You hate that he thinks of you as an example, that he emphasizes it constantly. Not only is it putting unnecessary pressure on you for no compensation, it's also costing you the few mild friendships you have worked to maintain in this hostile minefield of an environment.
The more he speaks of you as some ideal of professionalism, the more others give you judgemental side-eyes. Sneers. Avoid you. Spread snide comments that then find their way to you through gossip.
Maybe if Xavier stopped exalting your mediocre performance, your asshole coworkers would stop murmuring that you've been orally pleasing the glorified microwave.
Xavier doesn't even have a dick! Why would he?! He's an artifical stand in for a manager that only cares about the dehumanizing process of maximizing profit.
He doesn't have a penis. You think.
You only realize a long silence has installed itself this whole time when the robot breaks it.
" ... Are you ill? "
" Huh- No. No, I just have a lot on my mind. I'll work on it boss. "
There's another pause. This time, you presume Xavier is waiting for you to cave under pressure, or counting the pores on your complexion. You bet he'd know the exact number.
" You have not allowed access to more in-depth medical records. If I had such a permission, I would be able to rework your current shift into something more suitable for any preexisting conditions such as- "
" Uh no sir, no. I don't think that's relevant, it's probably just my sleep schedule. " The thought of Xavier knowing about your health beyond what is strictly necessary for employment is chilling to the core.
He takes the rejection silently, lenses refreshing.
" I know who is bothering you. "
Xavier says, so naturally and spontaneously that you gawk for a moment, forever surprised by his eery bursts of casual remarks.
" ... Pardon? "
These moments make it seem as if there's more than mere cold calculations running through his processor components.
Xavier drifts that much closer to you, now suffocating your personal space. Only the crimson of his camera lenses light the dingy alley you've chosen as your break spot.
" Incubus, Babesley. Masseur. He has self-inflicted carvings on his body consisting of infatuated statements and your name. "
You rattle for a second, the memory of the demon's mutilated chest surfacing, his wild and desperate eyes searching yours for a hint of approval that wasn't there, only disgust and fear.
" Wrathfolk, Mozgrag. Trapper. Teamed up with the incubus upon being confronted, effective in forcing his way to you at any cost. "
Another memory flashes by, burly hands carelessly tearing the horns out of someone's head, he'd look at you when the screams rang, attempting to prove something you only saw as terrifying murderous intent.
Shaken, irritated, afraid, you openly glare at Xavier.
" Why haven't you done anything... " It was too quiet to sound as confrontational as you wished.
There's a split second where his stiff arms twitch, like the machine was trying to roll its shoulders. Cameras tilt and reposition, erroneously assuming the light from his lenses is what's causing you to tear up.
" The customer is always right. " Faintly, or perhaps just in your head, his words sounded dragged out.
" Then what's the problem?! "
You can't help the childish irritation, the desire to pluck your hairs out of your scalp in a pull that might just tear your skin asunder. You want to scream and kick this stupid fucking machine until it shuts off. Why does he bother you during your breaks to ask things that make no sense, to unnerve you, to create contradictions. You've never had a positive interaction with this robot. Why would he mention those two if he seemingly has no problem with their attitudes?
You know he doesn't care, because your coworkers are also living through their own cases of harassment at the hands of the denizens of Hell. You've had to pretend you didn't hear the sound of a cashier's arm being twisted in all the wrong directions before. Reminded that quitting is not an option, that you can only pray such doesn't happen to you.
" Your performance- "
No. Shut up.
" Okay, let's do some math, Xavier. " You growl. " My precious work performance is being impacted by a lot of things, but mainly those two. Those two are customers, and the customer is always right, aren't they? So there's nothing to be done, yeah?! Stop- "
Your confidence begins to falter when you realize you've stepped out of line, that you snapped at your own superior. The fear of consequences flashes very briefly across your eyes. That's enough, you need to calm down. You need to leave.
Xavier's silence doesn't help.
" I'll... I'll be heading back to work now. "
Head hanging low, you attempt to swiftly retreat into work, halted quickly by cold metal wrapping around your arm.
His grip is as frighteningly solid as it is sudden.
You don't remember Xavier having ever touched you before.
When you squirm around to glance at him, ask what he thinks he's doing, those two cameras pin you into silent obedience. You could never hope to free yourself of his grasp, only if you wished to tear a limb out of its socket.
" Do you think I enjoy these limitations? "
There's a mute gasp. Then the pain of his grip tightening, restricting your blood flow into a tingling soreness. Your teeth bare themselves.
" I don't think you enjoy anything at all, machine. "
It was ruthless, yet, deep down, you almost believed it.
Xavier stares at you for another prolonged period of time, unaware that the pain in your arm is only worsening. You have no idea what occurs behind those lenses, what those words might mean to him.
Metallic fingers unclasp with the slowness of a decompressing blood pressure monitor, allowing you to yank your own limb back and hold it to your chest like an animal licking its wounds.
" ... This issue will be resolved. "
He doesn't make a move to follow after you. In fact, Xavier remains staring forward, at the empty space where you once stood.
Maybe you broke him. Who cares, he might give you peace for the rest of your shift.

suffocating presence ~ angst ‧₊˚

୨ ୧ ˚₊ pairing ~ trent alexander arnold x reader
summary: your boyfriends negligence leaves you no choice but to roam aimlessly around the streets !
THE AIR THAT surrounded you held a crisp bite to it this night in particular. It clawed at your bare flesh aggressively, leaving wounds to allow itself to get closer to you. Burying itself so deep, that there was not a part of you that did not feel it.
Light came rare at this time, the largest sources being from cars that flew past you, surpassing the speed limit by more than you could imagine. Streetlights sat sporadically placed across the pavement, their brightness not able to live up to its maximum potential like it may have been earlier on.
Everywhere around you had an obvious lack of human life. Shops that marketed themselves as open 24/7 having their shutters closed and locked. People either deciding to stay in the clubs only a couple of corners away or stay asleep in their warm, comfortable beds.
A fox was the only thing you had seen in the past twenty minutes that could breathe. Its dirt ridden fur being a perfect example of what you would look like by sunrise if you continued to walk around aimlessly like this.
You had only just left the clubs yourself but at that point you had your boyfriend nearby. No matter how much you had wanted otherwise, he had firmly stuck by your side, guiding you to his car while you did nothing but lecture him about everything he had done wrong to you in the past month.
Hell, a random woman that had approached him whilst you were still inside had gotten a considerable amount more attention from him. He had done the unthinkable, something that you had swore to never put up with. And whilst apologising when you did not mean it was not cheating, it may as well have been, to you that is.
“You’re serious about this? Walking home?” Trent called from the car next to you, his eyes forming a pattern of looking where he should be before looking back at you. The speed he was going at made him fall just behind your quickening one.
“You are driving in a bus lane.” You pointed out to him as you wrapped your shrinking coat tighter around the parts of your body it could reach.
Scoffing, his knuckles tightened their grip around the steering wheel, “You are walking around by yourself in the middle of the night. I know which one I care about more.”
It was now your turn to scoff, your head shaking as you did so. You refused to even look at him, the uneven slabs that were a constant threat to your knees taking up more attention than usually necessary.
The heels that you had chosen for the night sentenced you to the worse sentence possible, your body pleading to just have any kind of respite once again, even if it meant sitting down on the mucky ground. You had been standing all night, the only sitting that you had managed, ending quickly with you almost getting out of a moving car. A key word there being almost. Trent was quick on the breaks when he realised what you were about to do, allowing you to safely excuse yourself from his suffocating presence.
“Can you please just get into the car?” He tried, speeding up the car to get a distance from you before bringing it to a sudden stop where he could do so without being in others way.
Your body craved the warmth that the car could give, the way in which your blood was slowly freezing inside of you beginning to feel like a not so pleasant way to go. But you were far too stubborn. You said you were walking home and that is exactly what you were planning to do.
“We don’t have to talk. I’ll just get you home safely and then get comfortable on the sofa.” Trent made his offer even more appealing though you were yet to stop what you were doing. Your stubbornness was a trait that made you seem even more attractive to him when you had first met but at that point, the harshness of it was directed not towards him but rather a mutual friend of yours. Now it was, he wished nothing more than to obliterate it from existence. That being the exact same feeling your friend had described him after the fact.
Coming to an eventual halt, you threw your head stiffly backwards, “You will be sleeping on the sofa no matter how I get home.”
“Understood.”
He had made his way directly behind you, having abandoned his previous plan to stay in the car. The way your shoulders started to drop had a surge of relief coursing throughout his veins within seconds.
“So, you better get home a bit quicker to make it extra comfy for yourself before I get there.” You began walking again, using the fact that you had caught him off guard against him and in your own favour.
“Oh, fucking hell.” He mumbled under his breath, soon catching up to your attempted fast pace that was slower than your usual one.
For a while, he just walked behind you. Your snail like steps not getting you extremely far anyway. Though, having had to chase you around for over half an hour at this point, his patience was running dangerously short.
The feeling of his hand wrapping softly around your wrist sent sparks throughout your body. It was the first time he had touched you that day and you had not realised until that very moment that it was all you had been craving.
“I am sorry, and I sincerely mean that.” Trent began, bringing his free hand up to your face to press a finger to your lips when they parted to let words through. “I need to be putting more time into you and our relationship because they both matter so much to me. I have turned off these past couple of weeks and that was so stupid of me. You fell down my priority list, I admit that, and I regret that. I shouldn’t have ever allowed you to be anything but first on it.”
Your body began to succumb to his words, an eventuality that was finally happening. The way in which he moved his hand from your lips to instead caress your reddened cheek had your mind relaxing its adrenaline usage.
“And because of that, I am not about to let you walk over twenty miles back to our house. So, while I am sorry for all my previous actions tonight, I am not sorry for this.” He said, his calming voice creating a false sense of security within his words. Without your realising, his hands had moved position. He leant over slightly, his shoulder smoothing over your creased dress as he placed you over it.
A slight gasp escaped from your mouth at the suddenness, nothing fully processing in your mind, “Trent, put me down before I scream.”
He laughed at your meaningless threats, using the hand that sat dangerously low on your back to hit your bum.
“I’d rather that then being sat in a police interrogation room where I’m being told that they’ve found you dead in the middle of a random forest all because I went home to get the sofa more comfortable for myself.”
With that, you gave up your struggle, allowing him to carry you to the car. It did save your feet quite a bit of effort anyway.

Effects of Caffeine
This prompt was given by CodyBee on aO3
Arnold had served on crews with humans in the past, but he had never before been quite so perplexed by one as he was with Ruby. She was always moving. Whether she was bouncing her leg while she sat, or swaying slightly as she stood, it was like she was nearly incapable of staying still. The first time they were scheduled at a post together after he joined the team, he had a moment of fear that she was drunk and going to fall over! She has since brought small toys to fidget in her hands, which did help a considerable bit. At first, Arnold worried that bringing the small gadgets would lessen the overall “intimidation factor” they and their crew strove for on duty, but she would discreetly slip it into a pocket whenever facing the public. Ruby was also quick to notice and point out insanely small details. Being on a security detail team, one might think that quality would come in handy. And of course, it did, but sometimes the things she would notice were… odd. For example, part of the crew (Arnold and Ruby included) were hired out to serve as security for some rich erenti politician who fancied themselves as this big “outdoorsy,” “in-touch-with-all-nature” type. Being so rich, and especially being such a prominent proponent in some particularly high-profile legistlation that was being hotly debated at the time, the campaign team decided extra security was a must during the photo shoot of the politician traipsing through the “wilderness” on Earth. It was literally just a ten-mentik drive outside a medium-sized human town, but there were lots of trees, bushes, and tall grass so it looked the part. At some point, while Arnold and the rest of the team patrolled the area, Ruby froze mid-step and leaned in to inspect a nearby bush. Everyone else stopped, thinking maybe Ruby had noticed some security risk. No. It was a tiny red bug with black spots. It wasn’t even a poisonous or otherwise dangerous bug. Lerk, one of the mahbens on the team could barely even see it against the greenery until Ruby let it walk onto her fingers. It was so small, and surrounded by so many other things vying for attention, yet she spotted it immediately as she was patrolling!
That wasn’t the only thing Arnold found odd about Ruby. She was often rather forgetful. It wasn’t like she forgot about meetings or how to do her assigned tasks, nothing super important. Instead, she would forget what she was talking about in the middle of a sentence. And don’t even get him started on how many times he’d seen Ruby walk into a room, stop, and look around with a confused look on her face. When asked, she’d say that she forgot what she came in for and then would leave to “retrace her steps to remember.” There was one day during training someone pointed out a huge dark bruise on Ruby’s arm. She was in the middle of a rowing exercise and as she extended her arm, her sleeve pulled up enough for it to be seen. Ruby claimed it was the first time she’d even noticed it. That seemed absolutely preposterous! It was on her upper arm, just under the shoulder and it was dark. Super dark. Arnold knew enough about human health to know that the bruise was already pretty old at that point, it was large and purple, with a bit of green around the edges. Ruby claimed she not only hadn't seen it before that moment but also that she had no idea where such a bruise would have come from! Humans were weird. And Arnold just figured that Ruby was an especially weird one.
Arnold shut the drawer he’d spent the last 5 mentiks searching through. He’d misplaced his lucky pin. It wasn’t in its normal spot because he’d given it a shine before lunch. He remembered setting it down for just a moment. Somewhere where it wouldn’t be bothered. Somewhere where he thought he’d easily remember. Now he couldn’t remember where that “somewhere” was and he was scheduled for a mission soon. Arnold shook his head and walked along, scanning all countertops, tables, shelves, etc. as he went. Nothing. Maybe he’d check the rec room. As he entered, he immediately noticed it was already occupied by a few of his teammates. “You ready for tonight, Arnold?” Human Gustavo called out from the lounge in the corner. Arnold nodded. “Just about. I can’t find my lucky pin though. Have you seen it?” He tapped on his lapel where he usually wore it. Human Gustavo and mahben Lerk shook their heads but got up and began looking around. “Is it yellow and white?” another voice piped up. Arnold looked over to the opposite side of the rec room. It was human Ruby. She was standing in the small kitchenette area in her on-duty uniform, holding a bottle with a dark red label that she’d clearly been drinking from. He’d seen that drink before. Human Gustavo had ordered a large case of them last megacycle and “stashed” them away. The beverage contained large amounts of a dangerous chemical commonly referred to as “caffeine,” and was thusly banned. It wasn’t dangerous to humans, however, so they often smuggled it. Half the time they weren’t even discrete about it. Instead of exploding their hearts or driving them into paranoid anxiety attacks, it just gave them more energy and made them more alert, so management never said or did anything. The only unspoken rule was that the drinks were not shared among the rest of the team. Ruby, being human, should be fine to drink the beverage, but…
Ruby looked at him staring at her. “What? Gus said I could have one." “That has caffeine in it!” Arnold choked. “You already have so much energy! That’s got to be the last thing you need right now!” He knew they shared a schedule tonight. A super hyped-up human would not be conducive to their mission. Ruby looked a bit confused for a moment. “It’s fine, Arnie. I’ll be fine! This,” she held up the bottle in her hand, “helps me focus. I don’t drink it all that often, but my med delivery is a bit late, so a bit of caffeine kind of helps.” Even Human Gustavo could read the disbelief on Arnold’s face as he walked toward one of the lower storage closets and retrieved another, identical bottle from one of his “stashes.” “It’s true,” Gustavo opened the bottle which gave a short hiss. “Most people get a lot of energy, but caffeine doesn’t affect her the same way.” He lifted the bottle to his lips and took a big gulp, followed by a dramatic, “Ahhh! What a shame. So sad.” Ruby rolled her eyes and took a small drink from her bottle. “It’s not a bad thing. Or a good thing. It just is what it is. It’s how my cute little ADHD brain works.”
The two humans started laughing and teasing. Mahben Lerk shook his head as he continued to try looking around for the almost-forgotten lucky pin. “Oh!” Ruby started. “I nearly forgot! I saw a yellow and white pin somewhere recently! Hold on, let me think… it was on a counter with a sink. I remember there was a large bright light because it made the pin very shiny... it was catching a lot of light... and I liked the color. Is that the one you’re looking for?” Everyone looked to Arnold. That did sound like his lucky pin. By a sink? “Ah, I remember now.” He turned and went down the hall to check the washroom. Sure enough, there was his pin. He must have set it down after shining it when he was trying to get some excess polish off his hands. He grabbed it and walked back into the rec room.
“Was it there?” “You found it?” Arnold held up his lucky pin to confirm it had been found and then looked to Ruby. “You noticed this little pin even though it wasn’t yours and you didn’t know I was looking for it?” He didn't mention how she only remembered small details where she’d seen it. It was enough for him to find it and he was indebted to her after all. “Yeah, I do that all the time,” Ruby shrugged. “It drives me nuts when I only remember random details about things I’m looking for sometimes, but I guess some clues are better than none. “Yes, that's true."He paused. Something she'd said earlier intrigued him but he didn't want to be rude. "And that is a common occurrence? With the A-D- uh… the thing you said about your brain?” “ADHD, and yeah, kind of common, at least for me." She folded her arms and gave an exasperated sigh. "Especially when I haven’t been able to take my medications for it. Like, I still remember things, but it feels harder, muddier, if that makes sense?” Arnold nodded. He wasn’t sure what mud had to do with memory, but he thought he understood the idea of what she was explaining. “And that…the ADHD... that’s why the caffeine affects you differently than the other humans?” It was mind-boggling to him that the same chemicals and medications could have such wildly different results in humans. How did they know how anything would work for anyone? “Yeah,” Ruby nodded casually, “Instead of getting an energy buzz, I get a boost of dopamine, which my brain naturally doesn’t produce enough of on its own. Caffeine helps calm me down a bit and focus more. But,” she paused, “it doesn’t always work the same way for everyone. Brains are complicated. Like, it took a while for my doctor and I to find the right dosage of my meds, but we figured it out eventually. It's sometimes a bit of trial and error for people.” The conversation then turned to medications, to discussing reasons the shipment containing Ruby’s meds must have been delayed to comparing who had ever waited the longest for a shipment while off-world, to a back-and-forth mixture of complaining and gushing about how long or how quickly news and media were able to be transmitted throughout the star systems.
Arnold didn’t join in. His mind was elsewhere as he secured his lucky pin to its normal spot on his lapel. ‘Trial and error,’ ‘it doesn’t always work,’ ‘figuring it out eventually?’ By the stars! Human doctors must have their hands full trying to balance all the ways different things affect different humans! What could kill one human could probably save another. How did they figure all that out and keep everything straight? It was madness! An alert sounded from Arnold’s comm timer. It was time to get ready for the mission. Ruby heard it too and began disengaging from her conversation with Gustavo and Lerk. The two of them bid their teammates farewell as Ruby followed Arnold out of the rec room. They walked quietly for a while towards the briefing room where they’d go over last-minute notes and pick up any needed gear. Even though Ruby could have easily outpaced him with her longer legs, she stayed by his side. “Hey, before I forget to ask,” Ruby smiled, “did you have anything fun planned for tomorrow?” “Tomorrow?” Arnold frowned in confusion. “Well, we have our debriefing once we get back. I don’t have anything planned after that. Why? Is there another mission? They usually avoid having us doing back-to-back jobs.” “Oh. No, it’s not another mission. I just thought you might have something fun planned since tomorrow is your one solar-cycle anniversary of joining our team.” Arnold stopped. Was it? Had it already been a whole galactic-standard year? He’d been on several crews and teams so far in his career, but he’d never done anything special for any anniversaries. He’d hardly paid them much mind, let alone have someone else remember them! Ruby stopped as well. “I actually got you a gift. It’s nothing big or anything, but it’s something I thought you’d like. It’s just… it might be a bit late. It’s on the same shipment as my meds. Hopefully. I would have just waited to tell you about it when I gave it to you, but I just can’t wait anymore!”She watched his face for a reaction before smiling mischievously, “Don’t ask me what it is though, I won’t tell ‘till I give it to you. I’ll at least keep that much a secret.” Arnold wasn’t sure what to say. He stumbled out a “Than- thank you. You- you really didn’t have to get me anything. I was, uh, I was really not expecting anyone to remember. It’s not as if it’s some big milestone or anything.” “Oh I know,” Ruby’s smile got bigger. “But I wanted to! Humans usually celebrate birthdays, but when you have to start considering births, hatchings, emerging, constructions, and on and on, things get a bit complicated. So I decided to celebrate the anniversaries of when everyone joined the team!”
At that moment, a second alert sounded from Arnold’s comm timer. He always set two just in case he didn’t hear the first one. Ruby started walking toward the briefing room again. “Well, let me know if you do plan something tomorrow. We’d better get going though or we’ll be late for being early!” Arnold stared after her. She remembered his anniversary of joining the team? Not only that but had she actually memorized when everyone joined? She often forgot what time events were scheduled throughout the solar rotation. She sometimes forgot where she put her favorite pair of sunglasses until someone pointed out that they were resting on top of her head. Yet she remembered something so small as when he joined the team. He shook his head and started walking again. He didn’t want to miss being early. Humans, as individuals and as a whole, were so weird. He’d met so many, on so many different crews, but he had never before been quite so perplexed by one as he was with Ruby. Maybe he should plan something for tomorrow.

Out of curiosity, what else would you define as "anime English" stemming from literal translations? I grew up with anime, so I probably don't even recognize it at this point. Obviously I had original works and socialization for my English, but I never really thought about it until I came across your RGU retranslation project.
It’s hard to pinpoint a precise set of qualities of what I see as anime english. I think it’s mainly characterised by having things phrased in a way that is unusual for native english speaking television, as well as the presence of certain uncommon english words.
The unusual phrasing comes about from translating individual words more than the intended meaning. Japanese speakers phrase things in completely different ways to what is “common sense” in English. For example, passive voice is used often in Japanese — the most normal way to say “He punched me!” would actually be あいつに殴られた! which means “(I) was punched by him”. This is a simplistic example to illustrate a point, but hopefully this shows how the most common way to say something in English is often quite different to the most common way to say something in Japanese. When you translate Japanese, you shouldn’t try to preserve the original phrasing unless it’s important, because it will not carry the same sound or give the same impression when converted to English.
Translation is not just about the surface level meanings of the words or sentences, but also about the impression the sentence gives you (does it sound formal? Casual? Pretentious? Intentionally awkward?). In sentences where the impression is “natural, everyday conversation” you need to rephrase the sentence in a way that will be a natural, everyday phrasing in English, which may be drastically different from the Japanese.
As for the uncommon english words, those are a bit easier to specify.
告白する:“Confess (your love)” instead of “tell them how you feel” or “ask them out”.
“You’re an eyesore” instead of “you make me sick” or “you’re pathetic” or any number of other insults.
あいつ元気だな:“They’re energetic” or “they’re lively” instead of “they’re a handful”, “they’re a bit much”, or “they’re full of energy”.
面倒くさい:“It’s a bother” or “What a bother” instead of “I can’t be bothered” or “I don’t wanna”.
先輩・後輩:”Upperclassman/lowerclassman” instead of “older kid/younger kid” or “in the grade above/below”. I have NEVER in my entire life heard the word upperclassman used outside of anime subtitles.
There are many many more, but that’s all I could think of off the top of my head. I think the reason these words get used is partly because they’re the most direct literal translation of the individual word (yet no consideration goes into the vibe of the word!). Another part of the reason is that these words have become common to see in anime translations, which establishes a precedent for translators who are time-crunched (or just not very good) to take the easy option and use these words. This reinforces the usage of these words in anime translations, which distances anime english from other dialects of english and gives it a unique sound.

I think prisons in the United States and Europe should follow the example of the Georgia State Prison and shave all the hair on the prisoners' bodies. In addition to hygiene considerations, it is also to warn them that they are just waste of society while serving their sentences in prison, so as to prevent them from committing crimes again after being released from prison!

Did you know that the first map of the Himalayas was made in the 1500s by the Catalan monk Antoni de Montserrat, and it was so accurate that it was used by European expeditions until the 1800s?
Here's the story of a priest that was called by a Mughal emperor for interfaith intercultural dialogue and who ended up being -among other things- a royal teacher, a writer, a geographer, a fake Armenian merchant, and a prisoner.

Antoni de Montserrat was born in 1536 in Vic (Catalonia). He studied in Barcelona (Catalonia) and Coimbra (Portugal) to become a priest and joined the Jesuits. In 1574, he was sent on a mission to Goa (back then a Portuguese colony, now part of India).
The Mughal emperor Akbar was an open-minded man. He was Muslim but wanted to learn about the other religions, so he called representatives of different religions to his court in Fatehpur Sikri. In 1579, he called the Jesuits to explain Christianity, and the Jesuits sent Antoni de Montserrat. Everyone in the court -Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus- knew that the point was not to convert others, but to reach a better understanding through debate.

The Mughal emperor Akbar holding an assembly with religious men. The two men dressed in black are Jesuits. Miniature painting by Nar Singh, 1605. Chester Beautty Library.
The emperor Akbar valued Antoni de Montserrat as a great wise man and chose him to become the tutor of his second son Murâd. Antoni learned Persian (the language of the Mughal court) and accepted. He remained close to the emperor and accompanied him in the military campaign when the emperor's step-brother started an uprising in Bengala. Crossing much of Northern India, Kashmir, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tibet on elephant gave him the perspective to draw the map.
In the end, Antoni went back to Goa in 1582. There, he wrote a book explaining what he had seen in the Mughal Empire, the cultural differences he had experienced, the political organization of these territories, and describing emperor Akbar's court. This book is called Mongolicae Legationis Commentarius, and its descriptions of the lands he has travelled include the earliest description of Tibetans known in Europe since Marco Polo and the first ever map of the Himalayas.

Antoni de Montserrat's map of the Himalayas and their surroundings, including large parts of what nowadays is India, Tibet, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Library of St. Paul's Cathedral, Kolkata (India).
This book explains cultural elements of the different cultures under the Mughal Empire and also the conversations Antoni had with the emperor about certain habits. For example, Antoni writes about how the Brahmans (upper caste Hindu priests) force widows to be burned alive in the same funeral pyre as their dead husbands, often (when the women resist) drugging them or through violence. Antoni tries to get emperor Akbar to stop this terrible tradition, but doesn't succeed. On the other hand, Antoni also tells the emperor Akbar that they should burn the "men who dress as women" who live in the emperor's court, to which the emperor bursts laughing out loud and doesn't give any consideration to. Despite their different cultural backgrounds, Antoni and Akbar were friends.
Antoni's time in the Mughal Empire ended in 1588, when the king Philip II of Castilla and I of Portugal orders Antoni and a young Spanish priest named Pedro Páez to go to Ethiopia to convince the Coptic Christian Ethiopians to get closer to the Catholic Christian Church. Then, Antoni and Pedro dressed up as an Armenian merchants to border the Ottoman Empire through Iraq, Syria, and Egypt, trying to avoid the pirates of the Indian Ocean. However, before reaching Ethiopia, they took a ship to skirt modern-day Oman, but the captain turned them in as soon as they reached land in Yemen. Then, Antoni and Pedro were taken on a camel caravan to the Sultan of Hadhramaut (Yemen), who imprisoned them until 1595 and then sentenced to galleys in the Red Sea, and later imprisoned them again. Luckily for them, king Philip paid their rescue and they were freed in 1596. With his body weakened by the galleys and the mistreatments of prison, Antoni retired to a convent in Salsette (modern-day Mumbai, India), where he died in 1600 right after having finished his map.
The Spanish priest who travelled with him, Pedro Páez, also wrote his own diary explaining what they lived. With his descriptions, we know that in Yemen Antoni and Pedro were given what he describes as a kind of herbal tea called "cahua, water boiled with a fruit named bun and which is drank very hot, instead of wine": that is a drink that was still unknown in Europe at the time, which we now call coffee.
Maybe you have heard the name Pedro Páez before, too. After accompanying Antoni to Goa, he went to Ethiopia again, successfully this time. In Ethiopia, he became the first European to reach the source of the Blue Nile.
Information sources: David Montserrat Nonó (La Mira), Sociedad Geográfica Española. If you want to read Antoni de Montserrat's book, it has been translated from Latin to Catalan and to Spanish by Josep Lluís Alay.

I just want to thank you very much for your addition to the Neo-Khuzdul list of Personal Pronouns for Non-Binary folk like myself! Until now I've been referring to my character as Zigilhû, using the hû to refer to them as an it, and I was more than happy enough to work with that. But the addition of khi has made me absolutely ecstatic. I'm perhaps feeling entirely too emotional for this, but thank you so very much for your consideration, you wonderful person!
Well met, friend!
Your message truly warmed this old scholar’s heart. Thank you so much for your kind words — and please know: you are not “too emotional” for feeling seen. Language, after all, is not just about structure and grammar — it’s also about identity, recognition, and belonging. If the addition of “khi” brought that feeling a little closer to home for you, then I am both honoured and humbled.
Your use of hû in the past makes perfect sense — and indeed, in most cases, it’s the correct form when referring to objects or concepts that are grammatically gender-free in Neo-Khuzdul. For example:
“The fabric’s colour is red. Red is its colour.” Neked ankhâdhu baraz. Baraz ankhâdhu.
In such instances, where we’re referring to something that is neither gendered nor personified, hû remains the right choice. But what about when the reference is not to an object, but to a person whose gender is not specified — or deliberately not assigned?
That’s precisely where khi steps in.
⚙️ On the Creation of “Khi”
Neo-Khuzdul, like many conlangs built on Semitic roots, often lacked overt gendering outside of clear male/female distinctions. Tolkien himself didn’t assign grammatical gender to Khuzdul nouns (even the Elvish languages do not have a grammatical gender, i.e. there is for example no gender agreement between noun and adjective or definite article and noun), and I’ve followed that principle closely — deliberately avoiding the addition of gender markers unless absolutely necessary.
You might be surprised to hear that Neo-Khuzdul includes 136 distinct pronoun forms (though granted, many similar or near-identical ones) — and at first glance, that number might seem excessive. But in truth, it’s quite natural for a well-developed language. Even English, which often seems simpler, has dozens of pronoun forms once you account for cases (subjective, objective, possessive), number (singular/plural), gender, and reflexivity — not to mention formal or informal tone. Neo-Khuzdul simply makes these distinctions more explicit and organized, especially across levels of respect, gender, and grammatical roles. Once you understand the system, it becomes remarkably consistent.
Overview of all Neo-Khuzdul Pronouns
However, I also recognized that language needs to evolve to meet the needs of its speakers — fictional or otherwise. And so “khi” was introduced years ago as a third-person singular pronoun that could be used in situations where:
The person’s gender is unknown
The person’s gender is irrelevant
The person’s gender is non-binary
Or when one wishes to speak inclusively (e.g. in laws, oaths, or ceremonial speech)
It parallels the English “one” or “they,” but without the formality often associated with “one” in modern English. In fact, I encourage users to think of it as equivalent to “his/her” or “a person’s” rather than overthinking its tone.
“A trader must polish his/her items.” Usjar tabtisi mat fakâtkhi.
In the sentence above, usjar (trader) is gender-free, and khi comfortably occupies the same role as “his/her” — without implying either.
🧭 What About a Gender-Neutral 2nd Person?
For second-person non-binary reference, Neo-Khuzdul uses za. It follows the same case logic as other 2nd person pronouns — with full declension visible in the reference chart:
za – nominative/accusative
-za – genitive determiner (your)
aza – genitive pronoun (yours)
zefsa – reflexive (yourself)
duza – lative (to you / you have)
So if you’re ever referring to yourself or another person in the second person, za and its forms are your go-to.
🔁 When to Use Khi, Hû, or Za
🔧 A Work in Progress — But A Work for All
It’s important to note that gender-neutral forms in Neo-Khuzdul are not an afterthought. They are part of a living structure, built to support anyone who wants to engage with the language and culture of the Dwarves. You — and everyone like you — belong in these halls of stone.
Thank you again, truly. If this project has offered even a small sense of representation, then it’s done something worthwhile. I’m thrilled that “khi” found its place not just in the language, but with you.
Ever at your service, The Dwarrow Scholar

Here’s a quick bit of easy media literacy practice that we can all do together for fun:
1. Think of a piece of media that you don’t like. I don’t mean “It just wasn’t my cup of tea”, I mean you genuinely didn’t like it. It can be anything; a book, a movie, a TV show, a play, the storyline of a video game, etc etc
2. Pick out one part of it that you didn’t like. It can be the way a scene plays out, it can be a bad message, it can be a plot twist that didn’t work, it can be anything. Again, make sure it’s something you have a reason not to like, not just that it wasn’t to your personal tastes
3. Explain why you didn’t like it. Try to say/write at least three sentences so you’re encouraging yourself to give it proper consideration. What didn’t work? How could it be improved? Why would that improve it? Is it maybe just not appropriate for this story?
I’ll give a basic example here to help get ideas:
Media: Miraculous Ladybug episode Glaciator
Dislike: Ladybug being blamed for not showing up to Chat Noir’s surprise
Explanation: Ladybug told Chat Noir at the start of the episode that she couldn’t hang out that evening because she already made plans with her friends. Chat Noir was sad when Ladybug didn’t come anyway, and he punished her for it by refusing to work with her during an emergency. By the end of the episode, Chat Noir apologises once to Ladybug, but Ladybug apologises several times, which is unfair because Ladybug is treated as more in the wrong despite not being in the wrong at all

Tips for Writing Concisely
“Instant prose” can come from being forced to write papers of a particular length or being told that a paragraph must always contain exactly five sentences. This habit leads to the opposite of conciseness—wordiness in sentences and redundancy in paragraphs, which can confuse the reader and cloud your ideas.
Write what you mean—nothing more and nothing less.
Trust and respect yourself as a writer enough to not overstate what you mean.
Study sentences in your first draft to see what you can delete without losing meaning.
Read each paragraph aloud. Be sure that all sentences support the topic sentence.
Keep concrete, specific examples. Cut out extra words, empty phrases, weak qualifiers, negative constructions, and unnecessary “to be” verbs.
Also, watch for sentences and clauses beginning with it is, this is, and there are.
EXAMPLE 1
Wordy: The economic situation of Anne Moody was also a crucial factor in the formation of her character.
Concise: Anne Moody’s poverty also helped form her character.
EXAMPLE 2
Wordy: Frequently, a chapter in a book reveals to the reader the main point that the author desires to bring out during the course of the chapter.
Concise: A chapter’s title often reveals its thesis.
WEAK INTENSIFIERS & QUALIFIERS
Sentences are more forceful without them.
Notice how much clearer the following sentences are without the words in brackets:
We found the proposal [quite] feasible.
The remark, though unkind, was [entirely] accurate.
The scene was [extremely] typical.
That behavior is [fairly] unique for such an intelligent animal.
The first line [definitely] establishes that the father had been drinking.
SPECIFIC & CONCRETE Make sure that sentences are specific and concrete in their conclusions instead of raising more questions:
Wordy: In both Orwell’s and Baldwin’s essays, the feeling of white supremacy is very important. (This raises the questions: How is it important? Why?)
Concise: Both Orwell and Baldwin trace the consequences of white supremacy. (This revision states its point conclusively.)
"TO BE" Avoid unnecessary use of “to be” verbs:
Wordy: There are two pine trees which are growing behind this house.
Concise: Two pine trees grow behind this house.
REDUNDANT WORDS/PHRASES
Wordy: Any student could randomly sit anywhere.
Concise: Students could sit anywhere. (If they could sit “anywhere,” seating was clearly “random.”)
NEGATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS TO POSITIVE
Wordy: Housing for married students is not unworthy of consideration.
Concise: Housing for married students is worthy of consideration.
SIMPLIFY
Wordy: This is a quote from Black Elk’s autobiography that discloses his prophetic powers.
Concise: This quote from Black Elk’s autobiography discloses his prophetic powers.
