Shijima -

"Shijima is a classic deadpan character, which is already very autistic. She is very quiet, quite apathetic, prone to self-isolation and has a hard time making friends. She's quite blunt. She has a safe food (fishcakes), and has a strong attachment to objects, especially fish. Shijima's friendship with her friend Majime reminds me a lot of my own friendship with my friend with ADHD (although Majime could easily be read as autistic as well). She balances Shijima out well and doesn't judge her for her idiosyncrasies. In fact, no one really does, save for Shijima herself. A lot of the characters have their own quirks of communication, expressing themselves mainly through discussion of their interests, their physical presentations, and there actions. There's even a semi-verbal character. The entire world the story takes place in is idiosyncratic in itself, you're never quite sure where it stands in between a fantasy and a reality. also shijima and majime are like pretty gay."

Sometimes I wonder if people understand that you cannot make people stop comparing mentally ill and neurodivergent people to like serial killers and horror movie monsters without abandoning most of how we conceptualize and categorize mental illness. It's not like an ableism that comes from outside of the DSM or ICD from laymen, it's entirely baked in. The entire mental health system is about categorizing mentally ill and ND people as threats, liabilities, and inconveniences, while blaming it on intrinsic brain illnesses based on the ideas of typically incredibly biased and bigoted psychologists from several decades ago which are not founded in evidence (and said ideas persist mostly unchanged with the reasonings merely altered or justified with a shrug). The fact that after every mass shooting there is more posturing of "mental health awareness" and increasing MH services, when most mass shootings are committed by radicalized cis (and usually white) men tells you that a lot of this is security theatre. The MH system really just makes it more unsafe to seek medical help but it helps "neurotypical" people feel better, and it is the comfort of "NTs" that is most prioritized by this system. And of course, anyone who commits acts of extreme violence like mass shootings will likely be labeled mentally ill first (rather than radicalized, exc.) because of the circular logic that no one can be a Threat without being mentally ill. Do you see The Problem?

I'm not gonna pretend I'm not incredibly guilty of this, but the Death Note fandom really does give way too much credit to the main characters sometimes. "Why did Near live where the others died" because Light's allies were horny sycophants with rose-tinted glasses so thick they couldn't see five feet in front of their faces, L's allies had already been suckered by the enemy (and also a literal immortal God wanted him dead), Mello's allies were some generic mafia goons (and Matt I guess, who isn't all bad but is highly specialised). And Near's allies were the most competent people in the United States of America and they actually trusted each other for the most part.

The older I get the less I ship the bad boy ships and the more I ship the other option. You don't need romantic love you need prison and therapy. You can have compassion and forgiveness without that person's romantic love. Abuse doesn't make a good foundation for a relationship. All is not fair in love and war and I don't think this person is under any obligation to love you back. I'm rooting for the person trying to get them out of the crappy situation. Not the one who put them in it.
