the worst part of any creative project is when someone else sees what you're doing and goes "hey, i know a better way to do that, using this tool that will make it easier for you!" and they're so excited to help, and they take a bunch of time to show you the tool and how to use it to make things easier, and you sit there and nod and smile and try it out for yourself. and wait for them to go away and get distracted so that you can go back to doing it the original way because the tool did not make things easier and maybe is even more difficult due to not having a feature of whatever original tool you were using that helped with your personal process. and you don't wanna hurt their feelings about not using whatever method they spent all that time out of their day showing you
#many many many many many many many many such cases#i now have some weird new program downloaded on my computer that seems completely unneccesary for anything i do#i have a System for doing things. and that involves filling in individual squares in an excel sheet#there's a post that used to go around about someone's grandma drafting knitting patterns in excel#idk about knitting but it works pretty well for beadwork and so far seems alright for filet crochet#the pixel art program ironically does not give me enough control over individual pixels. AND its hard to read anything#and using the typing bit of paint.net doesn't let me edit the text multiple times. click away and click back over and over#i have to delete the text and start over#and also find a nice font and etc etc annoying shit#also neither of them lets me see the grid marks. which is important for counting stitches/beads/etc#easier to use alphabet systems people have come up with SPECIFICALLY for cross stitch/filet crochet/beadwork#and tweak the spacing manually by adding columns to my excel sheet#(its actually a libre office calc sheet. but whatever)

stalker! obsessed! jake sim x f reader
classmate jake being obsessed with you
there is/will be a less um extreme version.
ADULT CONTENT FEATURED read at your own discretion!!!
warning: jake is a nasty nasty boy 😛
you sat peacefully on the plaid blanket beneath you, your head tilting up towards the sun as it warmed your skin. your palm held your place in the book you were reading, as you tried to enjoy more times like this in nature.
well, until you felt a bug crawling on you, “ah!” you yelped and swatted at the bug. arms flinging, book flying, highlighters going every which way.
from a few feet away, a small laugh escaped thick lips from an australian boy who watched on from behind his thick dark sunglasses as he studied from his text book.
he sat at the picnic table of many, in the courtyard of the college campus, opting out of the grass like you and many other students.
you huffed and stood up abruptly, feeling stupid for trying to be one with nature. “stupid bugs.” you understood you were in their territory, but why couldn’t they leave you alone for at least an hour or so, to let you read in peace?
you stuffed your belongings in your bag, dusting off any remaining dirt from your shorts and legs, and walked towards jake.
jake swallowed nervously, quickly ducking his head into his textbook, eyes shielded by the dark frames. he bit his lower lip, hoping you hadn’t caught him. hope you hadn’t been on his trail.
he breathed a sigh of relief as you walked past him as if you had no idea he existed.
“are you just gonna always stare at her like a fucking creep?”
jake shook and jumped with surprise, being startled by his friend’s voice. he looked up seeing jay and sunghoon staring at him with a knowing look.
“i don’t stare at her like a fucking creep.” he mumbled.
“then what do you call that?” sunghoon asked, one hand gripping his backpack strap gesturing between jake and you.
jake shrugged, “she looked cute being startled by the bug.”
jay rolled his eyes. “if you don’t make your move, i will.”
jake scoffed, “please, you’re worse than i am when it comes to girls.”
“youre doubting my abilities to woo a girl, sim.”
“you both suck at wooing girls.” sunghoon chuckled.
“oh shut it sunghoon, you’re no better than us!” jake narrowed his brows. “remember eunjin?”
sunghoon’s lips went into a thin line, jay laughed, jake smirked, and mockingly added, “hawaii? i’m fine, thank you!”
“three, two,—,”
jake took off running, leaving his belongings as sunghoon dropped his bag, taking off after jake.
jay yelled after them, “we have class in ten!”
thankfully, they all were on time for class, alongside their other friend, heeseung. heeseung was also pretty nerdy in ways like them, introverted like sunghoon, but more athletic than the other three. heeseung excelled in almost all sports. jake claimed to excel in all sports, but that was up to debate.
you were already sat in your seat for criminal evidence, an elective for your forensic biology major. the classroom was set up to where there was a projector in the front of the class where the professor stood, and rows of tables that sat up to 4 chairs of students at once. there were 4 columns, each had 4 rows. so all together, the classroom could fit up to 64 students, but the class only has 48 students. (mainly due to drop outs last minute).
the classroom had big windows on one side and on the other side, two main doors for entering the class. you sat in what the professor named, “column 1, row 3, seat 1,” near the window.
jake stared at you as his sunglasses sat on top of his head, his brown eyes shinning. you were staring out the window, paying jake no mind, but then you looked over to jake as he walked side by side next to jay and your eye caught his. he smiled shyly, he quickly looked away, his cheeks and tip of his ears going red. you smirked, and your hand went over your lips to hide it.
jake sim was cute. if not all, most girls on campus had a crush on jake sim. he was handsome, smart, athletic, and funny.
you sighed to yourself. out of all the girls on campus, why you? he’d look at you, think, ‘yeah she’s cute,’ but then he can look at another and go, ‘fuck she’s hot.’ every girl knows there’s a difference and it hurts.
jake and his friend, jay, took their seats behind you, jay directly behind you, jake adjacent. his other two friends, heeseung and sunghoon, sat in the same row as you. sunghoon directly beside you, heeseung next to sunghoon.
the professor tried to keep the front seats open for trouble makers, or to keep her extra supplies for class spread out. sometimes if she played a movie or show, she would sit down her self to watch it with you all.
everytime during class you felt eyes staring at you. you always brushed it off though, you had classmates sitting behind you.
however, it wasn’t your paranoia. jake loved to observe you. your cute habits during class he should say. your eyebrows knitting together when you don’t understand something. the way your face falls when you finally start to realize it. the way you play and twirl your pen when concentrating. it’s cute when you do it. it’s annoying when jay does it.
the way sometimes you will fall asleep resting your cheek in your palm if you’ve worked a late shift at the cafe you work at trying to earn extra cash for some fancy things that catch your eyes.
jake could only think, ‘if you were with him, you would never worry. he would buy all the things you want and more.’
jake didn’t like when you would work extra shifts or late shifts at the cafe, even if it was only a 5 minute walk to your apartment. at 11 pm it’s dark outside and no telling what kind of creeps stalk around at night.
watching. waiting. stalking their next prey.
he felt betrayed (jealous) when you allowed your coworker and supervisor at the cafe, ni-ki, walk you home that night because you had stayed a little later than usual to help him clean the cafe. ni-ki didn’t have class the next day, but you did.
jake saw red when you smiled at the boy, showing your dimples, the boy playing it cool, with a smile, waving you goodnight politely, telling you to sleep soundly.
don’t tell her what to do! jake wanted to scream.
it didn’t matter you didn’t see ni-ki in that way. it didn’t matter what you thought of ni-ki. all that mattered to jake was that you let another man walk you home. that you smiled at another man. gave another man your attention. the only thing stopping him from going overtop and revealing him from the shadows was you didn’t invite ni-ki up to your apartment.
when you and ni-ki departed, jake had two (really three) choices; follow ni-ki or you. he followed you from afar. up to your apartment. since your apartment was older, it didn’t have the automatic locks. you were naive enough to not lock the door either. you dropped your bag, and slipped off your shoes at the front door that night, going straight for the bathroom as you had to pee and wanted to shower the grime off.
jake had slipped in quietly behind you. watching your every move, eyes sparkling with excitement. that night he watched you for the first time, your silhouette outlined by the glass of the shower door.
he couldn’t get out there fast enough.
and he rubbed one out to the thought of you for the hundredth time since he first saw you, however this time, he had a better visual of your body.
₊✩‧₊˚౨ৎ˚₊✩‧₊
class ended an hour and some minutes later, your mind feeling like jelly and liquid at the same time. when the professor dismissed, you stretched with a sigh, your shirt riding up, jake not missing a single inch of your skin. jay had to elbow him before he started drooling.
“so, are we having our marathon tonight or what?” you heard heeseung say to the boys and you looked over to them with interest.
“what kind of marathon? like walking or running?”
sunghoon laughed and shook his head. “no. since we’re all forensic biologist majors, we like to watch shows or movies centered around it.”
“like bones, criminals minds, csi miami, dexter,”
“do you all actually watch it or crucify it?” you scrunched your nose.
“what’s the difference?” heeseung asked, his bambi eyes looking confused.
you smiled softly. jake frowned seeing how you smiled at his friend. why were you smiling at heeseung like that?
you answered heeseung, “the difference is, if you’re crucifying, you’re not watching to just watch for fun. you’re watching it as if you’re doing homework.”
“why don’t you join us then? make sure we don’t do homework.” jay smiled and you nodded.
“sounds like a plan then. what time should i arrive and what should i wear?”
jake’s pants started to feel tight at the thought of you wearing nothing. showing up in a skimpy pajama outfit. his hands went into his pockets as he chewed on his bottom lip.
“come by 5, and anything that makes you feel comfy. we’ll handle the snacks.” jay smiled with a slight smirk. if jake wasn’t gonna make his move, jay was either going to make jake do it or jay was gonna pounce on you.
and knowing jake and his obsession with you, jake wasn’t letting you go.
jay quickly added you to a new group chat with them 4 titled, “future csi,” and promised to send you the address later.
you smiled to all 4 boys and bounced away with your things, with a smile. should you actually wear something cute and sexy or something comfortable for tonight? suddenly your mind started to over think this. crap!
you whipped out your phone, texting your friend.
to manon-moo: quick im having a movie night with boys should i go cute and sexy pajamas or comfy
from manon-moo: is that even a real question?
to manon-moo: ur right, cute and sexy it is!
from manon-moo: don’t think you’re off the hook yet. we need to unpack the fact you said movie night with boys—as in PLURAL. txt me later for safety babes 😘
your cute and sexy pajamas were creamed color pajamas shorts that had pink hearts on them, and a matching tank top with thin straps. you added an oversized dark hoodie in the meantime and black plain flip flops, to keep it casual and comfy. you quickly grabbed a small tote bag, and added your favorite lip gloss.
at least your pajamas wasn’t your favorite old school shirt and boxer shorts you stole from your male older cousin years ago during a family trip (they were clean).
when the address and pin location was sent in the group chat, you realized it was only a 15 minute walk from your apartment, so you grabbed your headphones and started your journey, enjoying the warmth of the evening sun.
little did you know, jake was right behind you, making sure you got to their house perfectly unscathed. he needed to make sure his girl, his obsession, was okay. he would’ve offered a ride, but knew you would’ve declined and would have said there was no point as it was only a short walk.
but maybe later tonight he can offer that ride. his mind turned and he smirked, laughing to himself. maybe he can offer a ride in more ways than one.
his phone dinged:
from jay p: r u following her??
to jay p: mind your business
to jay p: and yes. need to make sure she gets to us safely. i will walk in a few minutes after her with a good excuse.
soon you arrived to the light blue 2 story house with white shutters, walking up the few steps to knock on the door. their college house was cute. it was in a historic part of downtown like much of the campus so it made sense.
jay opened the door with a smile. “glad you could make it.”
you smiled with a nod. “me too.”
“jake will be here soon, uh he had to, run an errand.”
“okay,” you said and walked into the living room seeing heeseung and sunghoon already setting up the small living room to be cozy for movie night.
plenty of blankets, pillows, 3 pizza boxes, 4 boxes of different flavors of boneless wings, cheesy bread, and different types of drinks.
it didn’t take long for jake to walk through the threshold. he nearly tumbled over himself, too excited to see you, wondering if you already had revealed your pajamas to the boys. he couldn’t help but stare at your ass from behind as you walked.
he wondered if the cotton of your shorts was as soft as they seemed. “sorry, im late, i uh—,”
heeseung and sunghoon stared at the boy wondering what kind of excuse he was going to come up with. jay stood beside you, arms crossed.
you looked at jake worried, as he looked so out of breath, his hair messed up, “jake are you okay? you looked like you ran from something frightening!”
“oh yeah, um,” he swallowed, taking in a deep breath, “whew, got chased by a dog.” he chuckled showing off his smile.
₊✩‧₊˚౨ৎ˚₊✩‧₊
5 hours.
five.
FIVE freaking hours of the television marathon of different shows and episodes and not once did you think about moving.
you sat comfortably on the couch next to jake, jay on a recliner to your left, sunghoon on the one to jake’s right, heeseung sprawled out on the floor in front of the tv inbetween that and the coffee table.
food gone. drinks nearly empty. stomachs hurting from laughing and the food. minds spinning from talking about different scenarios and guessing. it was fun, and these boys were cool.
jay was unintentionally funny and you couldn’t stop laughing at him.
jake didn’t like it one bit.
jay wasn’t that funny.
you yawned with a stretch. “it’s getting late, i should go.”
“why don’t you sleep over?” jake asked before thinking.
your eyes went wide and jay and heeseungs eyes went wide as well, sunghoon’s body went still.
“are you sure?” you asked not wanting to overstay your welcome. “i don’t want to intrude.”
jake quickly shook his head, “you won’t! you can sleep in my bed, and—,”
“jake will sleep on the couch like a gentleman.” heeseung finished for him.
heeseung stood up from his spot narrowing his eyes at jake. jake was going to offer to sleep on the floor next you like a gentleman, but that wouldn’t be far enough.
after a few seconds of thinking, you nodded, and jake smiled, internally squealing. he would have to make sure he kept those sheets once you were done to keep your smell on them.
thankfully, he changed them when he came home earlier so there were no old come stains in sight on his bed sheets.
jay slept on the first floor, so he said goodnight and went to his room, as sunghoon and heeseung followed you and jake up to jake’s room.
jake turned around, “we don’t need a babysitter.” he frowned.
“we just want to tuck you in.” sunghoon teased, crossing his arms.
“boys that’s sweet, but im fine.” you laughed.
hesseung laughed, sunghoon’s ears going red. “oh, i meant jake.” sunghoon chuckled.
“oh, right.”
“but i can tuck you in, if you want.” jake smirked.
you looked at jake with a smile that could make jake melt, “i’m fine, go to bed,” to playfully pushed his shoulder.
it may have only been a littler after 10 pm, but you all were tired from endless television watching and classes earlier in the day.
“extra toothbrush is under the sink!” jake shouted before being pushed out of the room by heeseung.
before sunghoon shut his door behind him, he caught a glimpse of you taking off your hoodie. the one you kept on all night, keeping him from looking at your delicate and delicious skin.
“cock blockers.” jake huffed, shrugging heeseung off.
“have a normal conversation with her for more than 5 minutes, then maybe we’ll let you try to get in her pants.” heeseung scoffed.
heeseung and sunghoon bid goodnight to jake and went to their separate rooms, shutting their doors behind them.
jake lazily walked down the steps back to the couch in the living room, taking place were you sat all night, your scent still lingering.
jake’s face fell to the side, his nose inhaling your scent deeply, like he’ll never smell you again. before he knew it, he was taking his cock out of his pajama pants, it already stiff and leaking precome.
just the scent of you alone got him hard. he slowly began to use his palm to tease himself, running his thumb over his tip, trying to pretend it was your fingers, your hand, your skin on him.
how you would look so innocent with his thickness in between you. how you would mumble, and moan, and groan, and gasp. you may even giggle, or cry, or whimper. oh he would love to hear you whimper for him.
his hand wrapped tightly around his cock, adding pressure, as he added speed to his strokes, wishing it was your hands around him. wishing it was your pussy around him.
he was getting close to coming. ‘fuck,’ he whispered out your name with a long and low groan turning into a moan. it didn’t take long for ropes of white come to paint his hand and stomach, his free arm over his eyes as he had just came on the couch, shamelessly with you just right upstairs.
he fell asleep soon afterward, still holding his cock, semi-hard.
he next woke up around 4 am, cock hard once again, being startled from a very wet dream about you. fucking you on all fours in the back of his car, windows fogged, in the middle of the mall parking lot as he took you on a shopping spree. that was your thank you to him.
he had to pee, and peeing with a hard on was not the most sought out option. the half bath toilet downstairs was broken, so he had to use the upstairs hallway one. after a painful pee, and being quiet as possible, he finished his pee, and was still hard thanks to you.
maybe he would just peek and check in on you? make sure you know, no monsters have gotten you.
he opened his door slowly and quietly, seeing you laying still, breathing even. you laid on your back, one hand under your head, the other laid across your face, your nose and lips out.
the covers rested comfortably below your chest, jake smiled seeing the dark hoodie laying on one of his chairs beside his desk. you kept it off.
with a deep breath, he looked behind him, then quickly slid in his room, closing the door softly, tiptoeing closer to you.
his breath stuttered in his chest seeing your skin, your beauty, up close. you so still. he always wondered how you looked while sleeping.
he never had the balls or guts to break into your apartment while you slept. he tried it once, got the lock opened, but a neighbor opened her door then he chickened out and never tried again.
you looked so peaceful, innocent. your lips were parted slightly as you slept. he could just imagine your lips wrapped around his cock which was aching for you now.
he reached his fingers up slowly, and pulled the covers back gently, exposing your top, goosebumps rising to your skin, but you didn’t move. jake pulled the covers all the way down to your knees.
your shorts had risen up a bit, now closer to your cunt than before.
jake’s breathing halted for a moment. he could literally come in his pants.
his fingertip of his right hand traced your skin on your thigh up to your stomach, forcing the tank top up to expose your belly. so soft.
his fingertips traced over your curves, over your chest, your body filled with goosebumps, but you didn’t move an inch.
you were in a deep sleep. such a good girl for him.
he kneeled down by the side of his bed slowly, so his nose came close to your thigh. it’s like he could smell you, see a wet spot forming where your cunt met your underwear and shorts. just a taste—,
he was calmly and quickly ripped from you by the back of the neck, you still unfazed and asleep. he didn’t see who interrupted him until he was dragged out of his room by his neck and out in the hallway.
he whipped around to heeseung staring daggers. “what the fuck are you doing man! trying to catch a fucking charge?”
jake scoffed, scratching the back of his neck, “i wasn’t doing anything! i was just looking, i wasn’t going to touch or—,”
“looking is bad enough! while she’s sleeping! what the fuck is wrong with you!” heesung snapped.
on the other side of the door you felt cold, you took the hand off your face, reaching up to grab the blanket jake had slowly slid down your body.
panties wet, and you irked of frustration, maybe next time heeseung wouldn’t be around to interrupt.

Sansûkh (and Tasâlalkhud) by @determamfidd
I’ve wanted to try my hand at creating a lectern book basically since the moment I saw one, and what fic could fit the bill better than the most epic work in a very much epic fandom?
✨ Sansûkh retells the entire story of the Lord of the Rings and then some, so fitting all of it into a single volume was the kind of fuck around and find out idea that is common among ficbinders.
✨ So, I typeset the text in a two-column style, made it way smaller than what I usually go for (but still very much readable!), added footnotes (as opposed the original endnotes) with translation. It turned out to be 1200 pages, which I printed out twice (remember the fuck around and find out part? Textblocks over 10 cm thick do not fit into the guillotine I have access to, and using 70 gsm paper led to a textblock of just over 10 cm. So I had to scrap those 300 sheets of paper and start again with my trusty 60 gsm Ekko paper).
✨ So then, I painted the edges black, sewn 14 cm of endbands, and took a long hard look at my life and my choices. The lecterb case was only made possible thanks to this fantastic doc by @spockandawe and @lootthecoyote's excellent mathing. I’m honestly amazed it turned out so great on the first try (ok, we did construct a mock-up first, but even it only had one mismeasured part and that 100% on me). I also made an inner cover so no parts of the textblock would show indecently. Also! The case even has inner endpapers (all theoretically visible parts are lined with the same paper I used for the actual endpapers, but taking picture of this whole Object was super awkward.)
✨ Not only did I foil the spine, there’s even a foiled design (matching the one on every spread of the pages) inside the Oxford hollow (that’s the creepy black tunnel between the textblock spine and the spine of the inner cover, you can see it in the first photo).
✨ And the most amazing part: it does the thing! Stands on its own, opens nicely and all that. (Though the pages are a bit too light to want to stay put, and you have to hold it open a bit).
I’m very happy with how this turned out!

Spy x Family volume 14: bonus chapter and official timeline translation
Volume 14 was just released and it included a ton of great extras, including an extra bonus chapter and a timeline of events! Firstly, here's my translation of the 4Koma (4 panel) bonus chapter!
Lol at Anya telling Yuri to go to work 😂 I also love how Anya has a teacup once Yor is home ❤️
Next, much to everyone's surprise, Endo provided an official timeline...sort of. It doesn't have specific years and a lot of information is redacted, but it's something! Sorry for the sloppy editing, I pasted an excel sheet over the original text since that was much easier. Also, the letters in the "Character Age" column refer to the first letter of the character ("L" for Loid for example).
Did I forget who "Coco" was or was that never actually in the manga?
Even though much of the timeline is redacted, it does confirm a few things, like how old Henry and Martha were during some past events, and in the present, as well as Loid's age when he joined the army. I also find it interesting that Anya is included even though this timeline is about the wars...was the facility she was at involved with the war somehow? 👀 Were the experiments on her related? But it also includes Franky's breakups, so who knows, lol.
Next, a bonus illustration of Damian picking his outfit for the gala, just like Jeeves mentioned in the latest chapter. Ewen is telling him to pick black since it looks more more cool and mature. But Endo says that the overlapping patterns make it hard to see, so he should pick white. Obviously being the creator, whatever Endo says goes 😅
Stella progress illustration. Anya is the only one with tonitrus...
And lastly, the main cover and inner cover featuring young and old Henderson (maybe Martha for volume 15?)

heart to heart — spoiler

pairing — surgeon! na jaemin x intern! y/n
genre — smut, fluff, angst, age gap (10 years, jaemin is older)
word count — 2.9k
authors note — this is quite a generous and lengthy spoiler, fans of ‘love me back’ and ‘back to you’ will appreciate this one a lot. if you’re not familiar with the other two stories in the ‘love and games universe’ then my only advice would be… become familiar LOL, anyways enjoy my loves <3 don’t say i never gave you anything 🫶

Hayoung’s eyes glitter with mischievous delight as she leans closer, voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. She’s always been the resident sleuth, devouring every headline, every whisper in the intern’s lounge, cataloguing names and dates like precious specimens in a private menagerie. For her, uncovering the hidden ties that bind people is as satisfying as stitching new stories into a patchwork quilt. Tonight, she’s your guide through an exclusive gallery of Jaemin’s inner circle, each figure more beguiling than the last.
You draw in a shaky breath and edge nearer to the one‐way glass. Hayoung raises a slender finger toward the towering silhouette at the room’s center, a man whose presence feels as inevitable as gravity itself. His broad shoulders fill the crisp lines of his navy blazer, the fabric stretched ever so slightly across a sculpted chest, each inhale subtly flexing muscle beneath starched cotton. His trousers fall in a perfect, confidence-infused drape, hinting at powerful thighs honed by hours on hardwood courts. A tumble of dark curls grazes the nape of his neck, and when he turns, the faint arc of a smirk reveals a jaw so sharply carved it could slice through the hum of conversation. Even from here you catch the swirl of his cologne, something smoky, dark wood warmed by sunlight and feel the air shift around him. In that moment, Lee Jeno is less a man in a room and more a gravitational force: utterly magnetic, a living testament to strength and elegance entwined.
“That’s Lee Jeno, he doesn’t need an introduction. Everyone knows him, the most influential NBA player of his time.” She murmurs, voice hushed as if narrating a masterpiece. “See how he stands, shoulders squared like the corner of a backboard, every line of his tailored suit whispering discipline and power? He’s an NBA legend, record-breaker, triple-double maestro, the kind of athlete whose name is etched into every stat sheet and every fan’s heart. But more than that, he’s been Jaemin’s north star since they were toddlers dreaming of the same impossible things. He was the first to learn of Haeun’s little heartbeat, sneaking into the NICU at dawn to cradle the tiniest secret in his enormous hands. Off the court, he’s quietly philanthropic, rumor has it he quietly funds scholarships for underprivileged kids in his hometown, though he’d never brag. The media paints him as unflappable, the perfect poster boy for athletic excellence, but those who know him well call him fiercely loyal, the kind of man who shows up whether you’ve invited him or not.”
She lets that settle, then nods toward the woman at his side. “And that,” she continues, “is his fiancée, a vision of composure in couture. They met in college, drifted apart, then discovered that some bonds refuse to break. Their love story is whispered about in fashion circles and sports columns alike: soulful reunions, secret late-night text threads, wedding bells set to ring in just a few weeks. It’s the sort of romance you’d write a novel about—timeless, improbable, and entirely, irrepressibly theirs.”
Hayoung tells you that beyond the fairytale love story, she is every bit her own force of nature: the celebrated face of APEX, a powerhouse executive whose razor-sharp intellect and unflinching moral compass have steered global design initiatives and social impact campaigns for over a decade. In boardrooms she commands deference, in studio ateliers she inspires apprentices, and in every exhibition she curates she challenges viewers to see beauty as a catalyst for change. Each year, she and Jeno co-host the hospital’s signature gala, an evening of crystal chandeliers and whispered promises, where proceeds underwrite life-saving surgeries for families who simply can’t shoulder the cost. Hayoung recalls one gala night to you in particular. When little Haeun, clutching Bunny in one hand and a crayon-scrawled invitation in the other, was lifted onto the stage to present a check; the room hushed as the child’s earnest smile lit every heart, and tears of joy stained even the driest cheeks. It was a moment that crystallized their shared mission, to tether privilege to purpose, and to kindle hope in every young life they touch. Each December, they dispatch carefully curated gifts to every child in the ward—small treasures that, come Christmas morning, become lifelong keepsakes.
“Ryujin and Shotaro’s story is kind of a real-life fairy tale,” Hayoung begins, voice warm. “They met during college, he was mastering a contemporary routine, she was perfecting a lyrical piece and sparks flew over perfect pirouettes. Together they opened a tiny dance school in a repurposed loft, teaching six students and dreaming of bigger things. Now? Twelve studios later, they’ve trained hundreds of young dancers, from hopeful amateurs to budding professionals, and their outreach programs have given every child, no matter their background, a chance to feel the magic of movement. They’re always giggling when they talk about how their after-class water breaks turned into marathon brainstorming sessions. ‘What if we could heal with dance?’ and how every new studio opening felt like adding another heartbeat to the city’s rhythm.”
“And that dream brought them here,” she continues, tipping her voice conspiratorially. “Ryujin and Shotaro now co-design the hospital’s pediatric dance-therapy wing, turning sterile hallways into places where little feet learn strength and resilience. They’ve taught Haeun to pirouette past her fears, remember that time she insisted on ‘just one more spin’ even after her echo scan?—and they’ve choreographed holiday performances where she’s always the star. Their partnership isn’t just about fundraising or fancy recitals; it’s about showing every child that joy and healing can bloom side by side, and proving that sometimes the purest medicine comes in the form of music, movement, and a whole lot of love.”
“You see that hot guy by the window? That’s Lee Donghyuck, he’s a sports anchor whose name you can’t scroll past without wanting to know more. He’s the guy who turned a sideline gesture into a signature catchphrase, but off-camera he’s even more impressive: he spearheaded last year’s ‘Heart Run,’ a charity marathon that raised millions for the pediatric ward, and personally negotiated with sponsors so every dollar went straight to families in need. He’s brokered equipment donations, hosted fundraising luncheons in that very lounge, and somehow still remembers every child’s name who’s ever cross-checked him for an autograph. And don’t think he lets Haeun escape his radar. last month he rolled out a mini basketball hoop next to her play corner, just her size, and taught her how to drain a ‘baby three-pointer’ with a flourish. She squealed so loud you could hear it through the corridor, and he bent down afterward, ruffled her curls, and whispered, ‘You’re my MVP, princess.’ Even now she’s peeking at him, cheeks lighting up every time he offers a thumbs-up from across the room. With Donghyuck, it’s never just television bravado, it’s genuine joy in every high-five and every fundraiser he champions, a constant reminder that heroes come in many uniforms.”
She shifts her gaze to another figure: graceful, magnetic. “And finally, that’s Jang Karina. She doesn’t need any introduction, she’s a fashion powerhouse, her silhouette feels sculpted by intention. Karina began as a runway model whose charisma captivated editors and buyers alike; today she presides over a global design empire, her eponymous label celebrated for its architectural lines and daring palettes, while her beauty brand, praised for its clean formulas and bold pigments, has soared into the multimillion-dollar stratosphere. She pioneers mentorship programs for young designers, spearheads sustainable textile initiatives in collaboration with leading research labs, and curates charity auctions that funnel life-saving funds to children’s hospitals around the world. Every accolade she collects, Vogue cover shoots, Council of Fashion Designers awards, front-row appearances at the Met Gala, has been earned by a woman who learned to temper brilliance with empathy, who moved beyond the runway’s glare into the quiet confidence of a leader whose influence stretches from boardrooms to breaking bread with those she protects.”
“Karina and Dr. Na have a tenderness, a shared history written in soft confidences and midnight phone calls. They met during college before either dreamed of a spotlight, she, a striver fresh from design school; he, a busy surgical resident moonlighting to pay his rent. He didn’t like her in college, but they ran into each other in New York and started fucking intensely. Their first real date was over steaming bowls of bibimbap in a corner café, trading fears and ambitions until the staff nudged them out at closing time. Then life intervened—back-to-back seasons for her, grueling on-call marathons for him—and they drifted apart, each chasing dreams they’d once whispered to each other. They’re not really romantic but I’m sure they still fuck, I could bet on it, that’s how confident I am that I’m correct. They’re co-architects of Haeun’s world. She’s the first to arrive with balloons and homemade cookies on scan days, the one whose laugh draws Haeun from any shyness. Karina helps Dr. Na with Haeun a lot.”
Begrudgingly, you learn that they were lovers once, in that brief, incandescent season before parenthood reshaped his every horizon; the memory of their closeness still simmers behind Karina’s steady gaze. Now she arrives at the hospital not as a distant star but as a second mother to Haeun, smoothing stray curls with the gentlest touch and laughing through bedtime stories whispered in the playroom’s lamplight. When she bends to offer Haeun her lap, the little girl curls in as naturally as into her father’s arms, murmuring “Mama Rina” with the surety of a heart that instinctively knows where comfort lives. In every pivot of her poised stride and every warm look she casts at Dr. Na, you sense the unspoken vow: that this chosen family, wrought from loss and love, will hold its orbit against any darkness that dares encroach.
Her tone softens, eyes drifting back through the glass as if she can already see their silhouettes in the corridor. “They’re legends in their own right. Jeno, with championships and record-breaking buzzer-beaters that make arenas tremble; Karina, whose gowns have rewritten the language of fashion and whose makeup line is in every beauty editor’s kit; Ryujin and Shotaro, whose dance therapy programs have coaxed laughter and movement from children who’d forgotten how to feel joy; Donghyuck, whose voice carries stories of triumph on screens that millions tune in to each night. But none of that matters here. What binds them isn’t fame or fortune, it’s this hospital. This place saved Haeun when her own mother tried to end her life before she even drew a single breath, when she was left to die alone on the rooftop. Doctors patched her broken heart; nurses soothed her frightened sobs; researchers here keep rewriting the rules of what sick children can endure. Every gala Karina co-hosts, every scholarship Jeno underwrites, every dance-floor fund Shotaro and Ryujin open, all of it funnels back into this ward. They fund free surgeries for babies born blue-liped, they underwrite outreach clinics in forgotten towns, they sponsor scholarship nurses who stay to care for children no matter the cost. They do it all because of Haeun. Because she survived the darkness, they learned what true rescue means, and found a way to pay her back in light.”
Your heart twists in your chest as you watch Karina cradle Haeun at the edge of the room, tiny arms fluttering around Karina’s neck like fledgling wings seeking warmth. Karina’s hair tumbles over her shoulders in waves of midnight silk, each strand catching the light of the conference wing’s golden glow. Her posture is an unspoken manifesto of poise: spine straight as a ballet barre, shoulders soft but unyielding, gaze warm enough to melt the iciest boardroom. Haeun’s laughter resonates like a chime, and Karina responds with a low, musical hum, her fingers tracing idle patterns in Haeun’s curls. You step back, scrubs suddenly heavy on your skin, as though you’ve walked into a painting you were never meant to touch. The distance between you and this effortless grace stretches taut, and you wonder how you—ten years her junior, still mastering knotting sutures and bedside manner—could ever bridge the gap. You feel like a child intruding on a world you can’t touch: awkward in your youth, your intern’s scrubs swallowed by the hush of designer silks and tailored blazers.
Your cheeks burn when you realize how small you feel here: stripped of your usual confidence, every inch of your skin prickles with self-consciousness. You recall the times you braided Haeun’s hair, the soft “thank you, my wuv” she pressed against your palm, and you ache to belong in that gentle space again. But here, in the orbit of Karina’s radiance, you are merely a shadow, an earnest trainee whose greatest accolade is a passing nod from Dr. Na. While Karina, in the privacy of their past, has lost herself on his cock a million times, a fiery intimacy you ache to claim as your own. You tighten your grip on the edge of your clipboard, fingernails biting into the paper, and force your gaze back to the room. Yet even as you try to anchor yourself, your eyes betray you, drifting back to Karina’s measured smile, the easy way she curls a lock of Haeun’s hair behind her ear, the quiet assurance that you can never duplicate.
It’s not merely Karina’s beauty that stings, it’s her history, her accomplishments writ large in the world Jaemin inhabits. You think of the single-family flats you shared with overwhelmed roommates, long shifts of charting before dawn, the perpetual undercurrent of imposter syndrome that thrums beneath your every success. Karina, by contrast, has carved an empire from thread and vision, her name sewn onto the seats of fashion capitals from Paris to Tokyo. She is the creative force behind runway shows that have shaped decades of style; the philanthropist whose gala soirées have raised millions for pediatric research; the mentor whose apprentices now stand on stage in their own right. And here she is, bending gentle and unguarded over Haeun—an innocent whose life Karina helped to celebrate, whose future she pledged to support long before you ever learned your first surgical knot.
You flush all the way to your fingertips as you recall Hayoung’s hushed confession about Karina and Dr. Na’s secret trysts—how Karina’s satin lips once pressed against his throat in the moonlight, how she gasped his name as his fingers tangled in her platinum-blonde waves. Your pulse hammers when you imagine those heated nights, Karina draped over him like silk, whispering his name between breathless moans. You bite your lip, thighs trembling, picturing yourself in her place—skin slick, lips parted, arching beneath his touch as he buries himself deep inside you. Every polished step in these hospital halls suddenly feels charged with forbidden promise: could those same strong hands guide your body, curl you into whispered ecstasy until you’re nothing but warm, quivering mush in his arms? The thought sends a delicious shiver down your spine, and you press a hand to your chest, breathing unevenly, desperate for even a flicker of that raw, unfiltered passion Karina once claimed as her birthright.
Karina’s presence is almost mythic: hair that falls in glossy waves around a face sculpted by years of confidence, eyes that have both softened at a child’s smile and hardened at the cruelties of fashion backstage. She embodies refinement and resolve—each step a whisper of silk, each laugh a note of genuine warmth. Haeun clings to her as though born knowing Karina’s arms are safe harbors: tiny fingers threading through Karina’s familiarity, curls brushing Karina’s velvet collar. You watch that bond and ache—you’re not certain you could learn the art of such effortless love, not sure you could anchor Haeun’s heart as deeply, as naturally, as one who has guided her through every high-profile gala and quiet bedtime story alike. In that moment, you feel the full weight of your inexperience, the impossibility of matching a grace so honed, so intrinsic. The envy blossoms bitterly in your chest, and you wonder if you will ever find your own place in Haeun’s world beyond the shadow of these legends.
You turn your gaze inward, the harsh white of hospital walls receding as memory and desire entwine into a single, bitter bloom. You recall the early mornings when you and Haeun would share cereal in the NICU hallway, your voice the only anchor to her frightened world. You remember the fear that distilled your every thought when her tiny chest stuttered for breath, and the primal desire to be the guardian of her heart. Yet here, in the glow of polished floors and the gentle murmur of celebrities-turned-family, you feel neither hero nor protector. only an outsider whose worth is measured in clinical competence, not in the kind of love that sees without pretense. The ache in your ribs intensifies, a reminder that motherhood, in its many forms, is not won by credentials or passion alone but by the quiet alchemy of trust, time, and intimacy. You realize that Karina has woven herself into Haeun’s life with every shared story, every whispered promise, every dance lesson sponsored and every stolen cuddle. And you, still learning the rhythms of both scalpels and lullabies, are left yearning for a place in the soft tapestry they have created. You close your eyes for a moment, drawing a shaky breath, and resolve to carve out your own kind of sanctuary, a space in Haeun’s world defined by your devotion, your sleepless nights, your relentless hope that even the most fragile hearts can find new wings.

mad props! 02
summary: Miles catches onto your antics. wc: ~800 a/n: some advanced haterism going on here. this has gotten increasingly fun to write as the plot ramps up! pls don't be scared 2 leave any reactions or thoughts in the comments + tags :) 01 02 03
From then on, you made it a point to ignore Miles during partner work and punctuate it with an eye roll. He tucked his head back in surprise the first time you did it, and you felt like you’d just won a prize.
…That is, until he ignored you back.
Eventually, Miles just turned to the person in the next column to ask for a pen instead, seeming perfectly content with working on his own.
It should've been a relief.
Today, Mr. Sanchez handed out worksheets to write a short composition on, and you struggled to recall the correct word for ‘kitchen’. All of your attempts to remember the pictures at the back of your flashcards came to nothing, finally forcing you to turn around and ask with a heavy sigh.
"Um, hey," you began, wincing at the softness of your voice. "What’s ‘kitchen’ in Spanish? You remember?"
Miles looked at you with only his eyes. " ‘Cocina’."
No puns, no off-hand comment. Not even an offer to help further. He just quietly returned to his work.
Your plan was already falling apart now that he no longer initiated conversations for you to brush off, so you went with the next best thing: competing with him.
“Who was able to solve for the trajectory of–oh!”
The AP Physics instructor pushed back a strand of red hair as she glanced between you and Miles, whose hands had shot up at the same time.
“Let’s go with someone who hasn’t spoken yet. Ms. L/N?”
You smiled as you answered, “24.7 meters per second.”
“Excellent job, Y/N, and thank you for participating today. Now, would anyone else…”
As the woman called on other students, a strategy began to take shape.
It wasn’t hard to tell when Miles was about to raise his hand. His eyes would go wide, with a tiny smile that said he was certain that no one else could get this question right but him. His hand went up so fast that you had to answer before the teacher could even finish their question, but it worked. And it got you a few extra points for participation.
“Now, who can tell me what makes the film ‘Romeo + Juliet’ so unique?” asked the English professor.
Miles raised his hand. “It takes the original play and reinterprets aspects of the original plot for modern audiences.”
As soon as he answered, his eyes flickered towards you almost as if on cue. Sure enough, your hand flew up.
“Y/N, what a surprise! Care to add on?”
“Of course. The director, Baz Luhrmann,” you met Miles’ gaze as you specified the name, “used his over-the-top cinematic style of directing to bring the drama of the original play to life in a contemporary context. He replaced the swords with guns and balls for parties, but kept the dialogue the same so that audiences could better understand Shakespeare without needing to grapple with the work of translating Shakespearean English into modern English. He found a way to make the play accessible without compromising on the text.”
Miles narrowed his eyes at you while the stocky teacher made a noise of approval.
“Very succinct explanations, you two. I’m very impressed with you especially, Miss L/N. I hope to hear your voice more often in class.”
You noticed Miles still glaring, and rested your chin in the palm of your hand.
In a sickly-sweet tone, you whispered, “What?”
He shook his head and turned away.
-
“Alright, make sure you go home and memorize those formulas! See you Wednesday!”
You neatly stacked your papers and slid them carefully into one of your labeled folders as the bell rang, marking the end of your last class.
The hallway bustled with students rushing like bees to their lockers. On the way to your own, a pop of color catches your eye.
It’s a bulletin board filled with sign-ups for a number of clubs, from cheerleading to student government to debate. Remembering your college counselor’s comment about your extracurriculars “looking a bit empty”, you drew closer. Might as well, right?
You didn’t have the stamina for cheerleading, but speech and debate looked promising. Just as you took out a pen to sign your name, though, you stopped short and frowned.
At the very bottom of the list read the name ‘Miles Morales’ written with a neon highlighter.
Then again on the art club’s flier. And anime club. And music engineering.
‘Miles Morales’.
‘Miles Morales’.
‘Miles Morales’.
Guess you weren’t the only one who needed to beef up their transcript.
“Show-off,” you muttered to yourself.
Just as you were about to lose hope, there was one other club that Miles hadn’t signed up for, hanging precariously off of the edge of the board from a single thumbtack:
Theater.
And auditions were the very next day.

A young man with no government experience who has yet to even complete his undergraduate degree is working for Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and has been tasked with using artificial intelligence to rewrite the agency’s rules and regulations.
Christopher Sweet was introduced to HUD employees as being originally from San Francisco and most recently a third-year at the University of Chicago, where he was studying economics and data science, in an email sent to staffers earlier this month.
“I'd like to share with you that Chris Sweet has joined the HUD DOGE team with the title of special assistant, although a better title might be ‘Al computer programming quant analyst,’” Scott Langmack, a DOGE staffer and chief operating officer of an AI real estate company, wrote in an email widely shared within the agency and reviewed by WIRED. “With family roots from Brazil, Chris speaks Portuguese fluently. Please join me in welcoming Chris to HUD!”
Sweet’s primary role appears to be leading an effort to leverage artificial intelligence to review HUD’s regulations, compare them to the laws on which they are based, and identify areas where rules can be relaxed or removed altogether. (He has also been given read access to HUD's data repository on public housing, known as the Public and Indian Housing Information Center, and its enterprise income verification systems, according to sources within the agency.)
Plans for the industrial-scale deregulation of the US government were laid out in detail in the Project 2025 policy document that the Trump administration has effectively used as a playbook during its first 100 days in power. The document, written by a who’s who of far-right figures, many of whom now hold positions of power within the administration, pushes for deregulation in areas like the environment, food and drug enforcement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
One area Sweet is focusing on is regulation related to the Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH), according to sources who spoke to WIRED on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the press.
Sweet—who two sources have been told is the lead on the AI deregulation project for the entire administration—has produced an Excel spreadsheet with around a thousand rows containing areas of policy where the AI tool has flagged that HUD may have “overreached” and suggesting replacement language.
Staffers from PIH are, specifically, asked to review the AI’s recommendations and justify their objections to those they don’t agree with. “It all sounds crazy—having AI recommend revisions to regulations,” one HUD source says. “But I appreciated how much they’re using real people to confirm and make changes.”
Once the PIH team completes the review, their recommendations will be submitted to the Office of the General Counsel for approval.
One HUD source says they were told that the AI model being used for this project is “being refined by our work to be used across the government.” To do this, the source says they were told in a meeting attended by Sweet and Jacob Altik, another known DOGE member who has worked as an attorney at Weil, Gotshal & Mangesthat, the model will crawl through the Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR),
Another source told WIRED that Sweet has also been using the tool at other parts of HUD. WIRED reviewed a copy of the output of the AI’s review of one HUD department, which features columns displaying text that the AI model found to be needing an adjustment while also including suggestions from the AI for alterations to be made, essentially proposing rewrites. The spreadsheet details how many words can be eliminated from individual regulations and gives a percentage figure indicating how noncompliant the regulations are. It isn’t clear how these percentages are calculated.
Sweet did not respond to requests for comment regarding his work. In response to a request to clarify Sweet’s role at HUD, a spokesperson for the agency said they do not comment on individual personnel. The University of Chicago confirmed to WIRED that Sweet is “on leave from the undergraduate college.”
It’s unclear how Sweet was recruited to DOGE, but a public GitHub account indicates that he was working on this issue even before he joined Musk’s demolition crew.
The “CLSweet” GitHub account, which WIRED has linked to Sweet, created an application that tracks and analyzes federal government regulations “showing how regulatory burden is distributed across government agencies.” The application was last updated in March 2025, weeks before Sweet joined HUD.
One HUD source who heard about Sweet’s possible role in revising the agency’s regulations said the effort was redundant, since the agency was already “put through a multi-year multi-stakeholder meatgrinder before any rule was ever created” under the Administrative Procedure Act. (This law dictates how agencies are allowed to establish regulations and allows for judicial oversight over everything an agency does.)
Another HUD source said Sweet’s title seemed to make little sense. “A programmer and a quantitative data analyst are two very different things,” they noted.
Sweet has virtually no online footprint. One of the only references to him online is a short biography on the website of East Edge Securities, an investment firm Sweet founded in 2023 with two other students from the University of Chicago.
The biography is short on details but claims that Sweet has worked in the past with several private equity firms, including Pertento Partners, which is based in London, and Tenzing Global Investors, based in San Francisco. He is also listed as a board member of Paragon Global Investments, which is a student-run hedge fund.
The biography also mentions that Sweet “will be joining Nexus Point Capital as a private equity summer analyst.” The company has headquarters in Hong Kong and Shanghai and describes itself as “an Asian private equity fund with a strategic focus on control opportunities in the Greater China market.”
East Edge Securities, Pertento Partners, Tenzing Global Investors, Paragon Global Investments, and Nexus Point Capital did not respond to requests for comment.
The only other online account associated with Sweet appears to be a Substack account using the same username as the GitHub account. That account has not posted any content and follows mostly finance and market-related newsletters. It also follows Bari Weiss’ The Free Press and the newsletter of Marc Andreessen, the Silicon Valley billionaire investor and group chat enthusiast who said he spent a lot of time advising Trump and his team after the election.
DOGE representatives have been at HUD since February, when WIRED reported that two of those staffers were given application-level access to some of the most critical and sensitive systems inside the agency.
Earlier this month, US representative Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, said DOGE had “infiltrated our nation’s housing agencies, stealing funding Congress provided to communities, illegally terminating staff, including in your districts, and accessing confidential data about people living in assisted housing, including sexual assault survivors.”

Anyway now that everyone's confused, have a chapter 49 snippet
Remus Lupin: Peter's asking me why he hasn't been added back to the group chat yet.
Sirius Black added Peter Pettigrew
Sirius Black: Stop fucking leaving then
Peter Pettigrew: You were supposed to add me back right after I left!
James Potter: but every time you leave the chat it becomes harder to forgive harder to forget harder to reconcile especially when i later come to you for help and you cruelly rebuff me
Remus Lupin: What are you on about?
Peter Pettigrew: James asked me to teach him the full functionality of Excel yesterday and I said no.
Remus Lupin: Why did you need to know the full functionality of Excel?
Peter Pettigrew: Some Lily related reason, probably.
James Potter: first of all peter if you're going to keep exiting the group chat in a huff you may as well vlookup new friends we four are meant to be a merged cell and i've had it with you exporting yourself elsewhere then deciding to pivot table your way back in
Peter Pettigrew: ......WHAT?
James Potter: see? i can learn excel all by myself
Remus Lupin: You've clearly just Googled a glossary of Excel terms.
James Potter: a full understanding of the terminology is a vital step towards excel proficiency my friend
Sirius Black: I'd love to take the piss too but he is actually using Excel for a serious reason
James Potter: that's right and now that i know how to wrap text and expand column widths it's over for you people

Easter Moralized
This Easter (which, btw, in 2024 is also International Transgender Day of Visibility) we explore the gilded pages of the Vienna Bible Moralisée (moralizing bible), of which we hold the first full-color facsimile published in 1973. The Vienna Bible Moralisée is also known as Vienna 2554, referencing its current place of residence at the Austian National Library in Vienna. One of only three 13th-century moralizing bibles still in existence, this manuscript is an excellent example of the of the ways in which Christians worked to simplify the lessons of the Bible for those that were not theological scholars. Even though they were made to be more accessible, these types of manuscripts were only created for the wealthy class; they needed to understand the Christian Bible and its lessons to ensure that they were (theoretically) promoting moral behavior. Vienna 2554 is thought to have been commissioned by Phillip II Augustus, for his son, Louis VIII or his bride, Blanche of Castile.
The Bible Moralisée is curious for two reasons: it does not actually contain the entire text of the Christian Bible, and it is mostly filled with images, rather than with words. These specific attributes contribute to the accessibility of Christian morals by abbreviating biblical stories and using illuminations to visually represent them.

Interestingly, the designs on the pages of these bibles imitate stained glass representations at the time: the eight medallions placed in columns of four; the inclusion of quatrefoils in between these medallions; the use of vivid colors. This reflection of architectural design in the illuminations may have allowed people to visualize themselves in a church and may have led to more contemplative readings of the text that emphasized the teachings of priests and theologians at the time. One of the most well-known images in these types of bibles is Jesus as architect and creator of the universe. This type is seen on the frontispiece of this moralizing bible: Jesus is holding a compass as he focuses on the creation of the world. Geometry and astronomy were often associated with the divine in the Middle Ages and this viewpoint is well explained in Vanderbilt's Divinity Library website: "God has created the universe after geometric and harmonic principles, to seek these principles was therefore to seek and worship God."

The creation of the moralizing bible also inspired later moralizing versions of books and poetry, like Ovid’s Metamorphoses. These types of moralizing volumes edited and changed parts of the works to make them conform to Christian teachings oft the time.
Our facsimile was published in 1973 by the Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt in Graz, Austria in an edition of 3,000 copies at the manuscript's original size. To see the original manuscript, you can visit the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna or view the entirety of the manuscript online on their website here.

AKOM “Fine Tuning,” Episode 6: A prolonged jealousy
Another really excellent episode that I will have to listen to at least two more times to fully ingest, despite having lots of diffuse, unconnected notes where I ranted about most of the same text. They really backed up and gave it context and meaning, including adding a lot of things that I didn’t have and making sense of some of the extras that I did. It was both satisfying and frustrating: more satisfying than I expected, and my frustration feels more coherent and focused now.
I definitely think it’s one of the most important episodes.
There is only one point I would add, and that is just that when you listen to the episode it’s important to realize that Paul’s “jealousy” is the most egregiously non-sourced. There are basically two quotes that Mark Lewisohn uses to support this entire theme. The theme which he so beats into the ground that even if you don’t look at the footnotes it feels excessive.
I’ve mentioned before that when I read “Tune In” I was still very, very new to Beatles’ history. A newborn without any of the historiographical context, no understanding of the long, strange, John-deifying background, and therefore I wasn’t on the lookout for it. And that’s important because I went into the book with implicit trust, loved the writing, and still it was evident to me, fairly quickly, that I was reading an opinion column.

It was the cigarettes that did it
Paul’s care with money was noted—Pete says that while they all passed their ciggies around, Paul would “sneak one of his own to himself”—and he was still needling everyone about the Bambi sleeping arrangements, made all the worse now because he was jealous of Pete getting the best girls.
The second time I read the book I remember thinking, “Surely not that many people spontaneously bitched about Paul being stingy with cigarettes.” And that was my tipoff.
There are two quotes in the book about Paul and cigarettes that appear to be organic—one being Pete’s “sneak one of his own” quote in this episode—but you’d think that half the people Lewisohn talked to about their memories of some of the most famous people ever, and certainly the most famous from Liverpool, just magically thought that one of the most important things about these four guys was that Paul was stingy with cigarettes. And there is just no way that that is true.
But I also know how this works, inside out. You get “an angle” as a reporter. You have a story you want to tell, and then you interview people with that story—that angle—in mind. You ask questions that you think will elicit the responses that back up your thesis. And then, on the other side of the process, you filter the quotes you choose (and don’t choose) that tell the story you want to tell. And to be fair, every reporter and historian does this to some extent. It may just be to organize ideas in a coherent way, or it may be to focus on a theme. But it has also notoriously been used by historians to warp the truth and further a broader historical lie. (A very good example of this and the one closest to me is “the Dunning School” of the US Civil War and Reconstruction, the first real and condensed story of that conflict that injected into US historiography many complete lies, including the especially insane one that after the Civil War the “Radical Republicans” inflicted pain and humiliation on the South, which despite being the exact opposite of the truth is still the story most Americans “know.”)
Mark Lewisohn had a story he wanted to tell, and I believe that story is most obvious in his “jealous Paul” theme because it’s based on nearly thin air and even then is so ludicrously overblown. But I think it was just too tempting a canvas for Lewisohn. Setting up a dead, pretty kid as a sort of saint that Paul persecuted does so much work for everything else he wants to say about Paul, especially in the upcoming books. Hamburg becomes a pressure cooker where Paul’s true colors come out, and if Lewisohn can use Stu—a sort of perfect near-blank slate who never had time to put any of his memories into context—as a foil to Paul and to paint Paul as petty and jealous and seething, then all the rest of his work is easy. Stu is a layup that paves the way to seeing Paul as a bad guy. The concrete dries and everything else falls into place.
And look, there just is no way to see this theme as organic, because it’s not. It just isn’t. It’s not based on quotes or stories. There are a few completely disconnected quotes stretched to breaking that he uses to try to prop all this nonsense up with, but there is simply no defense for even 90% of the primary usage of them, and certainly not of the whole, big-picture story he creates with them.
I’m going to give one example—and there are many—but I admit to liking this one best because it’s all there in one passage based on one quote that doesn’t say any of this.
Passage:
But, as much as Paul liked exhibiting versatility, he was unhappy—he felt he’d been lumbered, that his multi-instrumental ability was tying him down. Who looked at the drummer? By rights, his place was out front, especially with his new guitar. Here he was, paying off the Solid 7 at ten bob a week and hardly getting to play it. Jealousy of Stu was stoked: Paul was in the back line while he remained out front (even if he was hiding and in dark glasses). One thing was for certain: Paul wasn’t going to abandon singing.
The only citation for all that Maca-inhabited resentment is the brief Paul quote already in the text, (FN35) and the next footnote—FN36—is from George on a new topid. There is no citation whatsoever to support any of Lewisohn’s finely-sketched fantasies of Paul’s vanity and jealousy.
FOOTNOTE 35: “I was drumming with my hands, playing the hi-hat and bass drum with my feet and I had a broomstick stuck between my thighs on the end of which was a little microphone, and I’m singing ‘Tell me what’d I say …’ It wasn’t easy!”
*Note: This quote is also in the text right under the ‘lumbered Paul wanted to be out front’ passage, so in some ways it’s an even thinner spread, if that’s possible.
So, according to Lewisohn:
Paul liked “exhibiting versatility” (a whole lot because of the modifier “as much as”)
Paul was unhappy because he felt “lumbered”
He felt he was being punished because he was TOO TALENTED
BY RIGHTS his place was out FRONT
He wanted to be LOOKED AT!
Jealousy of Stu is grabbed from thin air, based on nothing, and “stoked” by Lewisohn.
because, again, Stu was out FRONT
Did you catch the point that Paul is CHEAP?
Again, all of that is cited to this:
“I was drumming with my hands, playing the hi-hat and bass drum with my feet and I had a broomstick stuck between my thighs on the end of which was a little microphone, and I’m singing ‘Tell me what’d I say …’ It wasn’t easy!”
There are at least two more things that I want to say but this is long enough so I will put them off. (Hopefully not for long.) ✌🏻

How I track how much I spend on languages
I've been tracking how much time I spend on languages since june 2018 and I've been doing yearly summaries here every for a couple of years now. This year I was asked by @lokinescence and @itsbulbulls to explain a bit more how I track my time. I don't know if I'll be able to explain it clearly but I'll try! Maybe it's a bit chaotic, it surely isn't tidy or pretty.
I know there are different apps you can use to log your time but I started doing this in excel and I just like how I can play with it and add/delete what I need.
How do I know how much time I spent on an activity? Basically every time I do something in my languages, I write the time down. Easy. If I'm on my computer, into the excel sheet, if I'm on my phone, into my notes app. Now, the times aren't always precise. If I'm watching a show, they aren't talking the whole time and I try to approximate the "pure time" I spent with the languages. Which means I just substract a couple of minutes from how long the episode is. If I want to read or work with my textbook or do something longer, I'll write the start time in my notes app and when I finish, I just count how many minutes I spent doing the activity. Sometimes I don't know the time exactly – like if I'm texting with someone while doing something else – and I just guess how much time it could have been. Tracking the time isn't 100% precise, it's just so that I can roughly know, and if I miss some time here or there, it's fine.
How does my excel sheet look like? (messy) This is my daily page:
Firstly, I have these tables for each of my languages. It's a table where I log my time every day for the whole month. There are five rows for weeks in a month and the sixth row sums up how much time I spend on a particular day. If you look at my Swedish table you can see I tend to spend the most time on Swedish on Sundays (the last column). It's not that useful but I wanted to track that in 2018 and haven't really changed it. Then in the bottom right corner you can see the minutes converted to hours. For example, so far I've spent almost 7 hours doing Swedish in January. At the end of each month I put my data in my second page, delete the numbers in the tables and start over.
On the second page I have my monthly and yearly data. First I have a yearly table that also gets deleted at the end of the year. I log in how much I spent on each language in each month and can see the sum of how much I spent on each language during the whole year.
And then I have another table where I log the total time spent on languages each month. So if I spent 10 hours on each of my languages, I log 30 for January. This table doesn't get whiped, the numbers stay and I can see how much I did each month dating back to 2018.
And my last table (I'm showing just the first row, 2019, for some reason I feel self-conscious about posting all my stats here) shows how much time I spent on each language in a particular year and how many hours it's in total.
That's it, I guess! I hope someone finds it helpful

Interrupting the negative internal narrative Guest Feb 14, 1:27 p.m. Carolyn, you provided Doomed Relationship Update with the excellent advice to interrupt the thoughts of thinking their ex was some kind of ideal. My sister has come up with her own way of interrupting similar thoughts. When she takes her dogs for walks, they are always interested in consuming any cat poop they find. She has to tell them, "Don't eat cat sh*t!" each time. She said that's what she now tells herself when thoughts she does not want fill her head. "Don't eat cat sh*t!"
Carolyn Hax 👏👏👏 Perfect, thank you. Keepin it classy./end ID]

The Mighty Excel Timeline
Well, part of it...
Because some people seemed interested in my Excel timeline after yesterday's SQOTD, I took that as a cue to tell you all more about it! What do you mean no one asked? 🤔
This is part of the Excel timeline, blurred because of MAJOR spoilers.

Most of the columns are pretty self-explanatory.
In the "Story" column, I type up the basic outline of that chapter. What is this one about?
In the "Scenes" column, I make notes about specific scenes I definitely want to include in this chapter. Usually, these are either random ideas that popped into my head, a line of text, or full-on detailed scenes I already conjured up while lying in bed or going somewhere on my bike (my main means of transportation).
In the " Title" column, I jot down possible titles, but these are not always set in stone yet. Wistfulness, for instance, had five other titles first. Other titles are definite immediately, like Release. There was no title more fitted than that one for that chapter.
The "Events" column is usually empty, but when a particular event is taking place, like a graduation, a wedding, or a festivity, I note it because I might want to incorporate it into the chapter.
The "Age Up" column exists because everyone in Honeycomb is created by me, and even though most of them are now background characters, I still like them to grow and age with the passing of time, so I make a note of who to age up when
The "Other" column is for noting things I wish to remember but that don't fit anywhere else.
I use colours to track my progress: green is finished; written, shot and published. Blue is written and shot but not yet published. Usually I only have one chapter in this stage, but I'm a bit behind on updating my timeline and the chapters both in blue here are Wistfulness and Bestseller. I've had Bestseller ready to go for ages, but other things took priority. I also use pink (not this pink, a much more muted colour, lol) to indicate written but not yet shot.
This timeline goes a loooooooong way down; this is really just a fraction of it. I add to it and adapt it constantly. I've completely redone a large chunk of it recently because of two stupid idiots in my story who messed everything up. And it's a butterfly effect, too. Changing something in this part of the timeline affects other things taking place much later, so sometimes there's a lot of adapting to do.
That concludes the essay no one asked for. 😊 Questions? Please ask!

Two thousand years ago, a volcanic eruption buried an ancient library of papyrus scrolls now known as the Herculaneum Papyri. In the 18th century the scrolls were discovered. More than 800 of them are now stored in a library in Naples, Italy; these lumps of carbonized ash cannot be opened without severely damaging them. But how can we read them if they remain rolled up? On March 15th, 2023, Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and Brent Seales launched the Vesuvius Challenge to answer this question. Scrolls from the Institut de France were imaged at the Diamond Light Source particle accelerator near Oxford. We released these high-resolution CT scans of the scrolls, and we offered more than $1M in prizes, put forward by many generous donors. A global community of competitors and collaborators assembled to crack the problem with computer vision, machine learning, and hard work. Less than a year later, in December 2023, they succeeded. Finally, after 275 years, we can begin to read the scrolls. Grand Prize There was one submission that stood out clearly from the rest. Working independently, each member of our team of papyrologists recovered more text from this submission than any other. Remarkably, the entry achieved the criteria we set when announcing the Vesuvius Challenge in March: 4 passages of 140 characters each, with at least 85% of characters recoverable. This was not a given: most of us on the organizing team assigned a less than 30% probability of success when we announced these criteria! And in addition, the submission includes another 11 (!) columns of text — more than 2000 characters total. The results of this review were clear and unanimous: the Vesuvius Challenge Grand Prize of $700,000 is awarded to a team of three for their excellent submission. Congratulations to Youssef Nader, Luke Farritor, and Julian Schilliger! Runners up Of the remaining submissions, the scores from our team of papyrologists identify a three-way tie for runner up. These entries show remarkably similar readability to each other, but still stand out from the rest by being significantly more readable. Congratulations to the following teams, each taking home $50,000! Shao-Qian Mah. GitHub Elian Rafael Dal Prá, Sean Johnson, Leonardo Scabini, Raí Fernando Dal Prá, João Vitor Brentigani Torezan, Daniel Baldin Franceschini, Bruno Pereira Kellm, Marcelo Soccol Gris, and Odemir Martinez Bruno. GitHub Louis Schlessinger and Arefeh Sherafati. GitHub
What does the scroll say? To date, our efforts have managed to unroll and read about 5% of the first scroll. Our eminent team of papyrologists has been hard at work and has achieved a preliminary transcription of all the revealed columns. We now know that this scroll is not a duplicate of an existing work; it contains never-before-seen text from antiquity. The papyrology team are preparing to deliver a comprehensive study as soon as they can. You all gave them a lot of work to do! Initial readings already provide glimpses into this philosophical text. From our scholars: The general subject of the text is pleasure, which, properly understood, is the highest good in Epicurean philosophy. In these two snippets from two consecutive columns of the scroll, the author is concerned with whether and how the availability of goods, such as food, can affect the pleasure which they provide. Do things that are available in lesser quantities afford more pleasure than those available in abundance? Our author thinks not: “as too in the case of food, we do not right away believe things that are scarce to be absolutely more pleasant than those which are abundant.” However, is it easier for us naturally to do without things that are plentiful? “Such questions will be considered frequently.” Since this is the end of a scroll, this phrasing may suggest that more is coming in subsequent books of the same work. At the beginning of the first text, a certain Xenophantos is mentioned, perhaps the same man — presumably a musician — also mentioned by Philodemus in his work On Music. Richard Janko writes: “Is the author Epicurus' follower, the philosopher and poet Philodemus, the teacher of Vergil? It seems very likely. Is he writing about the effect of music on the hearer, and comparing it to other pleasures like those of food and drink? Quite probably. Does this text come from his four-part treatise on music, of which we know Book 4? Quite possibly: the title should soon become available to read. Is the Xenophantus who is mentioned the celebrated flute-player, or the man famous in antiquity for being unable to control his laughter, or someone else entirely? So many questions! But improvements to the identification of the ink, which can be expected, will soon answer most of them. I can hardly wait.” Scholars might call it a philosophical treatise. But it seems familiar to us, and we can’t escape the feeling that the first text we’ve uncovered is a 2000-year-old blog post about how to enjoy life. Is Philodemus throwing shade at the stoics in his closing paragraph, asserting that stoicism is an incomplete philosophy because it has “nothing to say about pleasure?” The questions he seems to discuss — life’s pleasures and what makes life worth living — are still on our minds today. We can expect many more works from Philodemus in the current collection, once we’re able to scale up this technique. But there could be other text as well — an Aristotle dialog, a lost history of Livy, a lost Homeric epic work, a poem from Sappho — who knows what treasures are hidden in these lumps of ash.

Number 6, Jack and Nico as members of an interdepartmental team (be it paranormal or otherwise)
buzzfeed unsolved/ghost files au perhaps?? hear me out for a moment... 👻
6. “I appreciate the effort but this is all wrong.”
There's a lot more administrative work that goes into ghost hunting than most people realize.
That's to say, about eighty percent of their work is mainly administrative clutter, five percent is actual ghost hunting, and the other fifteen is sitting around in the cold and the dark for hours on end wishing for a cup of hot coffee or an extra blanket.
It's a testament to how great Nico is as an admin team lead that everything goes to shit the second he calls out sick for the day. And oh, they're a hot mess.
Nico "Workaholic" Hischier actually tapping out to recover is about as rare as a Bigfoot sighting. They'd probably have more luck getting a clear FBA on camera. Or Nessie swimming up to say hi.
Jack's a seasoned pro when it comes to ghost hunting and when he's got a camera pointed in his face, but he sure as fuck doesn't know how to use formulas in an excel spreadsheet (what the fuck is a =SUMIF even supposed to mean.)
Still. Jack won't let that deter him for his next goal: surprising Nico by helping him clear out the admin stuff for their next leg of the ghost hunting tour in (checks his smudged, hastily copied notes) Australia. Damn.
It's a good thing Nico labels all his files. Jack sometimes just leaves the transfers from his handheld in his download folders until Jesper yells at him for not labeling footage again.
There's absolutely no ulterior motives for him taking this task on, no, not at all. Jack's definitely not trying to impress Nico with his deep understanding of expense tracking sheets (zero), or his organizational skills (abysmal), and his ability to cut the per diem cheques (he fucked up and had to void so many cheques Jonas shoved him out the door and told him to look up hotels and flights instead.)
It's the thought that counts, right?? Nico takes care of them so often, it's only right that Jack tries to help out. Sure, he's already texted Nico twice this morning to check in, then ordered him a surprise delivery of chicken noodle soup and immune-boosting smoothies, and then sent some get well soon flowers too because his mom once told him flowers are always a sweet gift. But this is practical. And Nico is nothing if not a practical dude.
Jack doesn't manage to make the excel file look good, but at least he's got colour coded columns and he's managed to find a few good deals through their frequent flyer points. Something's bound to be useful.
And so, Nico returns the next day, not 100% yet but clearly over whatever twenty-four hour bug he's got going on. He's bundled up in a sweater and he's sipping a herbal tea, voice a little scratchy but his sincerity evident when he thanks Jack for the care goodies.
"Really, you shouldn't have, I would've been fine sleeping it off--"
"Neeks, babes, just shut up and let me look after you, yeah?"
(Nico's face had gotten really red at that, and Jack was worried his fever was back before Nico's cheeks returned to their normal colour.)
He'd been hopeful when he eventually forwarded Nico the link to his spreadsheet, stuttering through his explanation of the flight options he's gathered, rental cars, and hotels that are close to the airport. He's even made a list of late-night restaurants, because everyone's starved for greasy takeout after a long overnight shoot. Nico is staring, wide-eyed, at the file when Jack's finally done explaining. And he's quiet for a long, long pause.
"I. Jack. Thank you, this is--so incredibly kind of you. I really appreciate the effort, but this is all wrong."
The words would've been utterly devastating if Jack didn't see Nico's enormous, genuine smile, clearly holding back a laugh but not because he's making fun of Jack. Instead, he gestures for Jack to pull up a chair, making room for him behind the desk, and leans over to show Jack the itinerary saved in his perfectly organized OneDrive. (Jack tries very, very hard not to shiver at their close proximity, and the comforting scent of Nico's shampoo in such close quarters.)
"Our next shoot is in Austria, not Australia."
"Oh, for FUCK'S sake--"
send me a jacknico prompt!
#they spend all their time together fixing up Jack's lovingly pathetic spreadsheet and guess who catches the bug next lmao#thank you for the prompt anon!!#asks#prompt fills#anon#long post#lmao my brain is so fried after the workday I forgot to add the prompt post link oops

Hello fellow dyslexic/adhd/others who would like to enjoy fanfics through their ears, I just spent the entire day testing android apps to find one that doesn’t suck as much.
TL;DR - these two T2S, Audify
I feel like I need to share this because 90% the apps don’t even allow a web page as a source, let alone get past the log in page, and I cant be the only one who doesn’t want to download every single fic.
“Oh, but doesn’t android have a built-in text-to-speech function in the accessibility settings?” I hear you ask. Yes, but it sucks ass very badly. Firstly it only reads in the system language, so it doesn’t really work. Second, you need to highlight all that you want it to read, and seeing that I read a minimum of 15k words in a sitting, I’m not gonna do that.
Also I’m broke, I imagine you are too, but even if I wasn’t I’m not paying for this, if I did I wouldn’t even be supporting a human being, so no.
I’ll immediately break your trust with the first point, but it’s what I’ve been doing until now, and now that I know what the android mobile experience is like, I feel the need to include this. The best solution I’ve had so far (which works wonders, let me tell you) is letting Siri read them on the iPad. It’s only doable when I’m at home and it’s still an apple product, so that’s why I began the research. However the positive points are INCREDIBLE so I’m going to ads it to the list because I said so.
First of all it’s built-in and SO EASY to access, you literally just swipe with two fingers and it stars to read. It reads the punctuation, you might think that’s a given and so did I, but no. A question sounds like a question, an exclamation point does why its supposed to do, short sentences sound what they’re supposed to sound like. In apparently all the apps ever created, you won’t find any of it, just flat, monotone voices with flat little pauses. Overall excellent experience 10/10.
Cons: it’s on apple, I consider apple the same as Disney, I would love to not give them more money so that they can make the market increasingly worse. Every now and then a system update will fuck with the tts function and it will be unusable for a while. Sometimes it doesn’t like the text format on some fics. It’s not portable.
Now that we got that out of the way let us get to the meet.
Speechify - it sucks bad. At least the free version, but seen as it costs almost 10€ a month I’m not even going to consider the premium version. Fuck that. You can’t increase the speed, and as somebody who hasn’t watched a single YouTube video on normal speed since they added the function I can’t do that, too slow, I forgot what we were talking about once we get to the end of the sentence. Also you can only use those weird very robotic voices, and they’re not even that many. Don’t recommend. I felt like I had to include it since it was one of the few who allowed browser navigation and well, it’s speechify. Also you can’t t have saved more than 3 “files” per time. Doesn’t have sleep mode.
T2S - cute. It works. Again, no emotions, but it reads what it has to, nice voice selections, easy to use. The premium version adds literally nothing, they’re a good app, what they have, they give. Also you can customise the interface colour if you want. Has the sleep mode. - EDIT: this app allows you to have multiple tabs open at the same time, unlike Audify. - EDIT EDIT: it's waaay better than Audify with pdf files.
Audify - works exactly the same as T2S, but it saves the history and has a bit more customisation for how it reads and what it reads (which you don’t really need for ao3, but if you wanted to read, say, Wikipedia with all the notes and stuff, now you know). Has the sleep mode. - EDIT: the double tap to start reading works slightly better than T2S on websites with weird formatting. But unlike T2S you can only have one tab open - EDIT EDIT: will turn your pdf file into text and will show you just text. If you had things like images or columns fucks for you.
That’s all folks. Now go and be free of your reading impediment, or be free in your multitasking, or whatever you want to do. I’m done, I’ve given my datas to all kinds of shady apps, I need to go do damage control
