So, there's one type of AI art that's caught my attention: short videos of creatures juxtaposed into real-life settings. I'd love to be able to support real artists of the same type of art. The only thing YouTube and the likes recommend me is AI though. If anybody knows where I can find legitimate videos like that, please send me suggestions!

In my doc this was written like a proper script, but Tumblr screwed my format :(

A military room, up to regs, with an empty duffle on the bed.

ROOKIE #1:

Sergeant Kai, what should we do?

SSGT. KAI:

Start clearing everything. Pack anything personal in the duffle. That includes all the pictures, put them in the envelope next to it.

ROOKIE #2:

And should we pack his clothes?

SSGT. Kai:

Only the personal ones. His sister told me those which were his favorites, and I’ve already packed them away. Roll the clothes up.

In the drawers, there were about twenty dog tags. They were all the originals. Rookie #1 pauses while Rookie #2 continues to clean.

Rookie #1:

Why does he have so many tags? Don’t they give them to the families?

SSGT. Kai:

They’re all from his old team. There was a tradition. The highest-ranking member on the mission would take the tags off of the body, take the smaller of the two and send the other home to the family. (pause) If the member dies, the tags they had go to their direct NCO, then CO, up the ranks.

Rookie #1:

So, what should we do with these then?

SSGT. Kai:

Pack them up too. His sister requested those as well.

ROOKIE #3:

Sir?

SSGT. Kai:

What do you want?

Rookie #3:

Lieutenant Ghost has gotten a reply from Ms. Quinn. She said it’s okay for him to keep the good luck charm that Lieutenant Wraith had on him for every mission sir. He sent me to retrieve that.

SSGT. Kai:

(Tosses him the charm, a worn crucifix detached from its necklace)

Rookie #3:

(Catches it, salutes, and exits)

The group continues to clean, until the room is barren. The group is joined by SGT. MACTAVISH

SGT. MacTavish:

It feels so empty without him.

SSGT. Kai:

Especially without his stupid Jesus Christ poster on the wall.

SGT. MacTavish:

Oh (with emphasis), I remember that. Anyway, Price said his body is ready for transportation back to the US. He booked us a civvie flight, but he put all of us in first class.

SSGT. Kai:

Please tell me he used the rest of Cooper’s frequent flier points. I know he gets a military discount, but that fucker went on leave religiously (with emphasis). He went, what, every three months if he could for like a week?

SGT. MacTavish:

Aye, to see that bonnie lad of his.

The two laugh, smiling at the memory they share.

Insert a black time skip screen that reads 15 years later.

SSGT. Kai is now retired and is on a walk. He sees a man.

Kai:

COOPER:

Kai? Jeez it’s been a minute. How’re you doing man?

a jew review of: nhl team happy hanukkah posts

good evening and chag sameach to my hanukkah-celebrating pals out there on hockeyblr. today i bring you: a non-comprehensive and entirely subjective review from one (1) jewish hockey fan of the graphics posted by various nhl teams in celebration of the first night tonight. i definitely missed some, and some teams didn't post any at all, so it's a bit patchwork. here we go.

vancouver canucks: this is an extremely serviceable graphic. love the blurred dreidels to give the effect that they are spinning. very funny. props for the detail that there is a shadow of the menorah on the ice. straightforward. icemenorah is a themeTM but some did it better than others and this is a classic. 7/10

carolina hurricanes: obsessed with what the canes have done here though i cannot comprehend it. the weird techno style textured background. the out of focus magen david around. THE HURRICANES. IN HEBREW. WITH THE LITTLE CANES LOGO THING I FORGET THE NAME OF ON THE HEI? INCREDIBLE. points for creativity. overall baffling vibes. 6/10.

pittsburgh penguins: this is just adorable. you hired someone to draw this. spectacular work, guys. it's giving a bit of 'we browsed the target hanukkah deco section for inspo' but it's too adorable for me to care. it's team themed, it's hockey themed, it's holiday appropriate. love everything going on here. they get points for doing what very few other teams are doing and remembering this is night one, so only one candle is lit. most everyone else is getting a bit a head of themselves. 9/10.

washington capitals: and here we have another edition of the icemenorah, with a minimalist twist. this graphic screams 'oh fuck wait is that tonight' which to be fair is also how i, a jew, felt about realizing tonight was the first night of hanukkah. could'a done more, but it's perfectly fine. 6/10.

new jersey devils: this fucks. it's got devils themes. it's got a cool style. it's got vibes. it's got: more hockey stick menorahs which i am always excited about. that shamash candle is a graphic design nightmare but other than that i am all on board. 8/10

vegas golden knights: i love the gold foil effect and that you remembered there was more to hanukkah than candles, that's nice, as is involving the other affiliates! however. where are the vibes. this is not the vgk wishes you a chag sameach, this is a greeting card i got on etsy. 6/10 just bc i KNOW you can do better. where's the neon, babes.

los angeles kings: oh this is fun. it's icemenorah: WITH A TWIST. the art style is cute, it's got plenty of hockey theme, it's also very obviously LA-y, i'm giving them points for this one. the shadow is insane but that's okay, it's ~stylistic. it's cute. 7/10. UPDATE: definitely AI. boo hiss. 0/10.

montréal canadiens: this is probably my favourite for sheer vibes. you got: levitating icemenorah. you got: action-shot candle lighting. you got: remembering this is night ONE. you got: the implication that the torch is the shamash candle????? you got: JOYEUSE HANOUKKA!!!!!!!! (and like happy hanukkah or whatever i guess). obsessed. it's so funny. it's amazing. 9/10.

I was off X/Twt for a long time because I switched over to bsky and have generally found it to be a much more positive, small space (like I actually have regular, positive interactions with mutuals rather than just shouting into the void and observing dumpster fires, imagine)

But I hopped back on X these last few weeks to keep a closer eye on the discharge stuff, and because army Twitter still pops off sometimes with HILARIOUS memes and takes and content even if generally it’s a hellscape.

The other ships are fine because I find it cute and funny — it’s a little weird because I’ve spent so much time in my jikook bubble that I forget that there are genuinely vmin and minimoni and namkook and poly truthers out there and that is so funny and odd to me? I dont even mind people being solos. Like. I think the forced-OT7-ication of all BTS fans is kind of silly. Why should we expect every single person who stumbles upon BTS to be equally obsessed with each member, or even value them all? I wish they would, but for some people, they just will never click with all 7 — they find a member they gel with, and they support them alone. Fine. Whatever. But then to go out of their way to hate on the others? To craft narratives where the members hate each other and hold each other back when they so clearly are the happiest as a team? Bro how? Why? What? BTS could have disbanded years ago and they didn’t. They didn’t have to renew and they did. Maybe don’t assume you know more about a literal stranger’s life and situation than they do???

And the crazies hide in plain sight. Because I watched AYS with my IRL friend who is 1) an extremely sweet, clever person and 2) a taekooker (she was targeted as a baby army by the bad algorithms and now she’s sucked in) and watched her say “aw they have such a sibling relationship” when jikook cuddled in bed and then watched her squeal and get butterflies when Tae forced JK’s head onto his shoulder (and I’m not saying anything negative about taekook in that moment but it was far from a cutesie coupley moment, even amongst other AYS taekook moments). I just say that to show how wild perspective can be because she truly saw alllll the jikook antics and chalked it up to friendship and saw 3 moments of taekook coexisting platonically and saw it as a grand romance.

And same for me! Like I ship/support/whatever you want to call it jikook, so that’s the lens through which I viewed AYS and the enlistment and the discharge live and all of it. And sure there are so many people who think I’m crazy for being a real person shipper but at least I’m not denying multiple levels of reality to do so?? And I have a healthy sense of self-doubt?? Idk if jikook are anything more than friends, I *think* they are but they could just be friends and I would be like “ah, okay” because I DON’T KNOW THEM.

The nominees who attended didn't really do press, it wasn't only Nicola who skipped it. There's an account on Twitter of someone who did press there and clarified that a lot of the actors basically walked the carpet and went inside the venue.

Nicola and her team are taking a gamble with the PR with Jake and I don't see it as only a response to the shipping there is more to it than that. People are saying she's stubborn, doubling down, not listening with this and it's not a good look for her. I'm not hating on Nicola, let me just state that upfront. I've looked at the comments across different platforms and the biggest thing I see from fans and GA is disappointment. I have actually seen fans who like her with Jake express their disappointment that she let it be about him and not her achievement. The party was a party not the awards but it nevertheless again moved the conversation away from her work that she says she worked so hard and so long for. Imagine a Jakola agreeing that she shouldn't have walked the carpet with her, like other events he could have stayed away and met up inside. And I agree, I'm not saying he shouldn't attend but if they found ways for her to walk alone then meet inside at other events why not this one?

Also, what fans are seeing is that whether she is with Jake or not, her PR and her persoanlity are getting to be inconsistent and not genuine to fans and some GA. Fans like me who followed Nicola for her other work not only Bridgerton noticed a shift since last year to now. People were glad to see her yesterday, see the recognition for her work, love that she's a badass and is taking on things other actors don't. They see her doing that while being herself.

That's where some fans are stuck - between Nicola as human being, actor and advocate who's doing so much while just being herself as authentic as can be to the Nicola who is then pushing something publicly that goes against what she herself said publicly. There is Nicola who admits to watching trash TV but then is a professional and the Nicola who knows she's already a target in the media and entertainment industry but is leaning into something that will make it a little more difficult for her. Every single article is pointing out that man's age and the wording of the articles, AI or not are casting heavy shade. Like heavy on the shade. It's almost like the press all agreed to show this unconventional woman can only be with an unconventional partner - same shit from last year when this whole thing started. I get that she's doing whatever for PR but wow this is a lot. I will never fully understand it and some of it don't make sense but I also remember don't know them and their game plan.

I don't see it as totally detrimental to her career and she's a person who will never get it right 100% she's just like anyone of us making mistakes. But she's also in a fickle industry, we can say the Bridgerton fandom is loud but small and GA don't care but when she acquires new fans for new projects and the same things happen she is at the risk of eventually being painted in a way that she may or may not like. We've seen things about actors and she is not stranger to it.

My point here is I hope whatever PR gains and losses she is willing to endure, whatever backlash she calculated she will get, is worth it for her. If your TL is mild good for you keep it that way because trust me the gc and spaces are eating her up. Jake too, and Luke who was no where near anything yesterday is catching heat because the PR again with Antonia is something that isn't consistent. They're comparing the two.

For the love of God that damn pap pic of her in the orange cardigan is rearing it's head again and already the talk about her looking drunk and scruffy that time is resurfacing. It's painful to watch and other vile stuff is coming out. They're using those photos as much as the ones from last night to report "her new man". From trans hate last week to now this. We can see her play book and the patterns but it still is a damn shit show.

My claim: SJM is a leading cause of anti-intellectualism, lack of empathy, lack of media literacy, and pro-plagiarism (honestly, including pro-AI) in the Booktok community whether it was intentional or not.

Anti-intellectualism:

While this term most usually refers to the movement conservative lawmakers are doing when it comes to banning books and such, I am talking about this one specific kind on TikTok that is a push to read for “vibes” only. These readers will often say “it’s not that deep”, and condemn those who want to analyze what they read because they do not see value in it.

This is something I see the most in the SJM fandom. Often, a fan does not want to dig deeper than what’s written there for them, and what the MC believes. Quite literally “what you see is what you get”. They do not like making connections to the real world, valuing escapism to a degree that just isn’t functional. Escapism is absolutely a useful tool for readers, but it shouldn’t be all that you do to an extreme degree.

These fans will often take hypocritical stances because they refuse to understand a character past the beliefs of the MC, and often don’t like learning about new things.

If their favorite character is Feyre, it is especially difficult, because their favorite character does not value reading, as she practically kicked and screamed her way through learning. So why should readers who adore her put any value on reading more than surface level?

This type of closed mind reason often does not allow them to see past their own beliefs and understand other perspectives, which leads to my next point.

SJM also refuses to do her research (you can check my blog for a list of things she should be researching within her books). she disrespects different cultures, religions, etc, mostly which is frustrating.

Lack of empathy:

1) I’ve seen many SJM fans tell people of color and pagans that the problematic content they see in SJM’s books isn’t real because they personally aren’t affected by it. For example, I’m upset as a Norse Pagan that SJM plagiarizes and disrespects my faith. I’ve been told by multiple fans that my faith isn’t real so I’m getting upset over nothing. Another example, I’ve seen women of color screaming to be heard about Feyre’s cultural appropriation, and I’ve watched as they’ve been told that Feyre should be allowed to slip into a costume when she feels like it.

2) Every single SJM FMC has a problem with empathy. Feyre does not receive consequences for the harm she does to other people and “doesn’t let herself think about it”, so she clearly lacks the foundation of empathy. She thinks she is entitled to the help she receives from others and gets frustrated when they choose their own safety over helping her again. She clearly holds no sympathy for the women in 2/3 of her court. Aelin also seems to have a big empathy problem (I mean, she was literally going to use her cousin as a breeding stud???), and also never faces consequences for her actions until the last book. If these FMCs never have to care about others and never have to face consequences for hurting others, why should the readers ever have to as well?

3) we’ve all seen the SJM fans who have sent SA threats and death threats on tik tok, I’m sure. And it’s all over small opinions over characters too. This is just not normal behavior. But then again, Feyre openly allows her husband to tell people to off themselves, so how could we ever expect better behavior from her fans?

4) This is also especially interesting to me because SJM’s FMCs are all around 16-21, which I’d assume to be her target demographic. However, this is the most impressionable age because these are young adults going off into the real world right before their prefrontal cortex develops. This is a crucial time for us, and yet we are reading about FMCs our age who are doing terrible things to people with no empathy and are getting away with it. What is that teaching us.

5) also most people you meet in the fandom are younger (13 is the youngest I’ve seen) and older (I think the oldest I’ve seen was in 40-50s)than that target demographic which is also insane to me because why is my age group fighting with people much older and much younger?

6) For a while (and still in some stores) ACOTAR is branded as YA, meaning impressionable teenagers and children have better access to this material. This can shape their formative years too. Especially when this content is so pro-conservative and pro-traditionalist views.

Lack of Media Literacy:

This goes right back to my explanation about “it’s not that deep”. Fans don’t want to put in the effort because they want to “turn their brain off”. With the rise in lack of media literacy, this is especially dangerous. I’ve also noticed that people are saying ACOTAR is the gateway into fantasy. That tells me new readers are immediately jumping into this sort of story with no basic understanding at all.

Pro-Plagarism:

It’s no secret that SJM has plagiarized from many religions, cultures, movies, books- literally anything. Her fans view it as great story telling. I’ve had people tell me that she’s a genius for using Norse mythology and mashing it with other religions and that they’re excited to see her do more things like her Hades and Persephone retelling with Rhys and Feyre. SJM has not has an original thought in her life and it shows.

It also makes fans think they can steal too and get away with it because their favorite author does.

Pro-Capitalism:

We all know SJM wants money and will do anything for a quick cash grab. In the same way, I think this instant gratification for capitalism manifests itself in the use of AI- art through fans. SJM’s fandom has been almost the only fandom I’ve seen use so much AI art that I have to wonder why.

Conclusion:

I’m of a big belief that human beings are not stagnant. We are constantly changing based on our influences and environment. Reading is a big influence for many people, and what we read can shape our perception of things, regardless of age. When people tell me that these are just adults reading these books so whatever’s going on is their own problem from their upbringing and not SJM, I get frustrated, because it’s a problem for both.

The fact that SJM hasn’t recognized the harm that she’s doing to various communities and hasn’t spoken out about anything tells me everything I need to know about the type of person she is. We all know she’s eager for money and fame. I don’t like speculating about people’s political beliefs, but as much as SJM says she’s anti-Trump, I believe she’s still a conservative. Both things can still be true. Whether it’s old bias that she is trying to unlearn or she still believes those things, there are ideals within her books that are still so harmful.

I could go on and on about this, and I truly believe it. But please if you have anything to add I’d love to hear it.

The future of AI is going to be awesome. As someone in the data field, you have to keep moving with it or be left without. IT is definitely an exciting time.

As someone else in the data field, my full background is in data and data flow, AI is the latest buzzword that a small group of people in Silicon Valley have pushed to work people up into a frenzy.

The people cheering on AI are the same people who said NFTs were going to radically change the world of work.

I think there’s positive uses for AI, particularly in pattern recognition, like detecting cancer.

However, Sora looks like shit. It’s producing videos of three-legged cats, and it’s using stolen work to do it. And sure, it’ll get better, but without regulation all it will do is poison the well of human knowledge as certain groups begin to create things that aren’t real. We move into a world where evidence can be fabricated.

Why are generative AI fans targeting artists who voice their concerns? Every day I see some AI techbro tweeting an artist and saying they’ve just scrolled through their art and fed it to an algorithm. It is scummy behaviour.

As a fellow ‘data field’ person, you’ll know that AI is also only as useful as what we feed it. Most organisations don’t know where their data actually is, they’re desperately trying to backpedal their huge push to the cloud and host things on premise. The majority of digital transformation projects fail, more fines are being handed out for failing compliance than ever, and companies can’t possibly claim to be cyber secure when they don’t know where they’re holding their data.

AI won’t fix any of this. It needs human engineering and standardisation to fix, non-technical and technical teams need to understand the connectivity of every process and piece of technology and maybe then some form of AI can be used to optimise processes.

But you can’t just introduce AI and think it fixes large-scale issues. It will amplify them if you continue to feed it garbage.

It's a strange experience to see a few HH/HB fans call Jax misogynistic because of the way he acts towards Pomni, Ragatha or Gangle "and only them!" when Jax is an asshole to everybody including Zooble and Kinger but most importantly

The only reason he seemingly only targets girls is because other than himself, there's only two other guys in the whole place : One is insane like 90% of the time (Kinger) while the other is an AI (Caine). The present cast of TADC has 3 women, 2 men (including himself) and 1 Zooble.

Zooble can fire back against any of Jax's tricks and attitude any day

Kinger doesn't notice when he is being bullied and wouldn't even care if he was conscious of it because he was shown to be a well put together guy in the dark

This means Jax's bullying targets come down to the remaining 3 members of the cast, who all happen to be girls : One has self-esteem issues, one has anxiety issues (on top of being the "new girl in town") and the other uses fake positivity to survive her current predicament... Making them perfect for Jax to mess with.

I still find this so ironic that those fans didn't understand that Jax's nasty tricks are rated E for Everyone when it's pretty obvious but remain passive to HH/HB's rather misogynistic writing and one dimensional female characters.

Exactly. Nothing about Jax's bullying is aimed at the fact that Gangle, Ragatha, and Pomni are girls and he never hesitates to be shitty to guys or to Zooble, who's neither. He really is an equal opportunity asshole.

Kinda wanna remind everyone too, when Tae dropped that Hawaii pic of him and Jk with staff right before the AYS trailer and how it sent shippers into a frenzy and they started hammering on Jikook and AYS, saying it proved it was a fanservice show, blah, blah, tk real private yada yada, Tae sending us signals, claiming his man, you know the usual. And pretty much the entire fandom was at each others throats, like it was bad. Shippers vs shippers, solos vs solos. The harassment and targeting Jikook's relationship. Guess who came online immediately after? Jimin. Jimin who had been very quiet pretty much for a long time, came to say he was doing well, not to worry, but he said something very important, that he is now a soldier and careful of what he posts online. I think his message was clear and not only a subtle message to Tae, but the fans, considering Jikook were being attacked so bad & their show being called a fraud And that is exactly what JK did, this time coming online not even 24 hours after a hell storm. So they do both defend their relationship, the best way they can without just flat out saying back off. So yes, Jimin has come online in the middle of chaos, like JK. Maybe not as much, but he and Jk are the only ones who do it when a mess is made and fans start acting up bad. That should tell you something. That they clearly don't like it, but trying to remain professional.

With JM’s comment, I’m not sure if it was intentional or not tbh, but the timing was definitely pretty funny lol so it does make you wonder. I also just appreciate his letters, they’re always so sincere and you can tell he really puts a lot of thought and care into them (I’ll never forget the first letter he wrote to us post-training, handwritten and the little creases 🥺)

But you know what I also think is super cool about Jikook? The way they also just ignore all the noise and stay unbothered.

in CH2 alone there’s Jikook going to Japan together in the middle of the situation with JJKs tagging the military, JM posting JK’s hot100 #1 while PJMs were attacking JK during Seven era, JK doing that whole Jimin live while JJKs were attacking JM during FACE era, now JK sharing several military stories that include JM right after that whole mess. I think it’s amazing that they’ve never let antis make them change the way they behave together or stop them from hanging out, making content, enlisting together, mentioning each other, or toning down their dynamic (teasing, roughhousing, or just being weird as hell lol).

I think that’s what makes tkkrs (and some other antis) so mad sometimes because they’re constantly trying to control/demand things with vmnkook - canceling orders and threatening to boycott, tried to get GCF Tokyo taken down, trending hashtags to cancel AYS, trending hashtags for all sorts of things tbh, emailing BH to stop the gay etc. They're constantly trying to demand things from the company, which is why it’s always been so ironic to me that they call Jikook the “company pushed ship” when they’re literally the ones trying to use money and other means to manipulate BH into giving them the ship content they want 😭 (as well as force them to “hide” jkk lol) so talk about projection. But yeah, none of that has ever stopped Jikook from doing their thing.

Also your ask makes me think back on JK’s JM live. I’ve always sort of thought that JK may have intentionally hyped SMFpt2 the way he did because of the ridiculous hate it was receiving. Especially because he really emphasized how much he loved the specific part antis were trying to drag. iirc he said that it was his taste or his style or something like that. I just really loved that moment, it was super vindicating lol. I remember even non-jkkr ARMYs commenting about it too, talking about it being a slap to the haters, or karma or whatever (I definitely also just think he really liked SMFpt2 tho!).

Anyways yeah, I’ve always just assumed that it’s probably a collective group decision to not address solos/shippers. Some people think it would be so simple but it really wouldn’t. If JK said something it would just be a domino effect of extreme responses (re: his NewJean’s comment). It would also drag the other members into it, expecting them to make similar statements or risk being attacked. I think that’s why it’s easier for him to address situations that only involve himself. Maybe they'll try to address it as a team one day, but imo it definitely won’t be happening while half of them are in the military with limited phone access, having to watch what they say and do more than ever.

I recently reblogged an article from Rolling Stone about fandom's concerns regarding the use of generative AI and how proliferation of generative AI on AO3 weakens the sense of community in fandom which (at least for fanfic) works under the notion of a gift economy. It's a good read.

Things it made me think about:

AO3 is, on the whole, a good thing for fandom and a lot of ink has already been spilled on this topic, spelling out why AO3 is good for fandom. But, given that AO3 is a gigantic corpus of fiction that is, with small exceptions, nothing but fiction, it is also a perfect target for generative AI training sets. We know that is precisely what happened. *cough* omegaverse. ;)

Ever since AO3 first started --- and I was there on LJ when a series of shitful things happened that made fans need an archive OF OUR OWN --- I have also been a bit critical of AO3. Yes, I support AO3 and am thankful for its existence and yes, I think it is a good thing as a whole for fandom, but as AO3 became more entrenched in fandom I noticed something not so good: I felt less of a sense of community around the act of writing, with other writers, together in a gift economy of words and ideas.

A big part of that has to do with the technology itself. AO3 is designed as an ARCHIVE and a good one at that. But, in making itself into an archive, it very purposefully lacked certain features that popular fannish platforms of that time had. For instance, LiveJournal's (and, later, Dreamwidth's) features for creating interest-specific communities, hosting blog-style discussions, and creating spaces that people inhabited.

I have never felt like AO3 is a place that is inhabited in a lively manner. It always felt more like a library or, these days, more like a bookstore. AO3's feature set has grown a good deal from its earlier years, allowing it to partially support community events. But, overall, AO3 has always felt a bit clunky to me because it needs information&library sciences style features because it *is* an archive.

Don't get me wrong. I really do appreciate AO3 and how easily it lets me find fanfic.

But therein lies the problem. It is far too easy to visit AO3 and be nothing but a reader. It is a massive library full of stories of varying length. Just keep clicking on tags of interest or use the search tools and see what the archive returns to you. More stories. Lots and lots of stories. You can read forever.

This is very different from what happened in the fanfic communities on LiveJournal where prompts and challenges were hosted and people signed up as writers while also being readers. Stories tended to be shorter (but not always) and participation in the GIFT economy was the name of the game: Post prompts. Write stories other people's prompts. Read stories for the prompts you posted plus other prompts of interest. It was all about gifting and sharing and having fun. There was a lot of discussion, a lot of meta, quite a few in jokes, and it had the feeling of an after hours writing workshop. It was the opposite of "sssshhhhhh! This is a library."

To me, AO3 always felt like a place that you archived your stories *after* you were done writing them, discussing them, squeeing, finding all of the typos. Whoops. More typos. and DONE. Off to the Archive it goes. AO3 wasn't about gathering together with 30 or 50 or a 300 people in a specific fandom event on a specific LiveJournal community. Instead, at least for me, AO3 it was more about writing longer fanfic, often but not necessarily multi-chapter fanfic structured more like a traditional novel. Meanwhile, all of those more experimental fanfics, freeform fics, drabbles (100 word stories), and "lots of short fic later stitched together in one big timeline" that worked well on LiveJournal felt a bit awkward on AO3. (This is why I haven't bothered to archive a lot of my fic on AO3).

Just before generative AI became an issue in fandom, for a number of years I noticed people on tumblr complaining that they weren't getting an interaction on their AO3 fanfic. They would see the hit counter go up plus a bunch of kudos but no comments. No interaction. No sense of their fanfic strike up discussions.

I also saw people complaining about readers who were impatient and just wanted more fanfic. At least one person said that they felt like readers saw them as a vending machine that produced fanfic for free.

That is the kind of thing that happens when fanfic is filed away into this gigantic wonderful archive that is a reader's paradise.

The author becomes invisible.

The author is just there to supply more words, more stories, more chapters.

That isn't why I joined fandom and, to be honest, most of my fanfic is not on AO3 (for a variety of reasons). I never found it a fulfilling platform *for me* as a writer. YMMV. But it doesn't provide writer-me what I want in fandom --- a sense of community and shared headcanon and events and interaction in a space that is inhabited and full of activity. A place where fanfic can be off-the-cuff and quick and short and written in response to other community members' ideas and thoughts. A place where writing is a little more ephemeral but a hell of a lot of fun.

But, as a reader, I love AO3. Where else can I find so many 350,000 word novels of the exact pairings/themes I'm interested in?

Much like in the Rolling Stone article, I wonder how fandom will evolve in response to generative AI.

Mostly, I wonder how to create a sense of community once again.

As a Sonic fan I feel the need to spread news about the scams targeting Sonic fans that are going around lately.

One of them, which I don’t have any evidence for at this time but have been warned about through word-of-mouth, is that sometimes scammers will pretend they have a popular or hard-to-find Sonic character plush (Build-a-Bear Shadow, basically any Tails plush, SOAP shoe Sonic, etc.) and pretend to be selling it. A friend of mine said they tried to buy a Tails plush from someone online, sent the “seller” money, and not only did they not get Tails, but the “seller” put the listing back up like nothing happened. And that person showed me evidence of similar scams but they didn’t send it to me, just had me look at the screen.

Another one, which I do have screenshots of, is bot blogs centered around the Sonic movies, using either uncredited fan art or AI-generated images, and posting sketchy-looking links to “watch the movies for free”.

Sellers listing fake products and not shipping the product is something that, unfortunately, happens all the time on places like Facebook marketplace and even ebay.

That is why I would request proof of ownership via a picture of the object you are looking to buy, the plushies for example, and something like your name on a piece of paper written on it beside it, or a fork, spoon, banana, ect in frame or beside it too.

Nothing that would hurt or ruin it, just to add validity that they do ineed own it.

Before buying a product from someone, especially off of tumblr, you can reverse image search the image to see if it's been posted online previously.

Unfortunately that's always been one of the biggest and most notorious scams circulating around online.

Clicking these links will harm your phone or computer, as in most cases they involve malicious websites that ask you to sign up, download, and/or install some sort of software to watch the movie.

Or they may even lead to a fake tumblr login page that will turn your account into a bot after it steals your login information, or lead to a fake virus alert to install an app that will try to steal your information and passwords.

Its not pretty all around, and any and all posts you encounter like that should be reported as spam asap.

Reminder since some of you guys seem to either be very young and uninformed or simply grossly misunderstanding fair use laws.

Fanart being sold for profit is and ALWAYS HAS BEEN copyright infringement.

That is not new. That is not something up for debate. It's a very well documented fact. It's not a "legal grey area" nor is it different from people monetizing fanfiction.

The reason it's not being targeted by corporations in any meaningful way is because they don't want to target it in any meaningful way.

The lawsuit against Midjourney is not going to impact fan artists because nothing being sued for has changed, Corporations don't have an interest in suing fan artists because they would spend more money on doing that then they would get back.

The reason corporations don't go against fan artists on large is, always has been and always will be that fan artists don't operate at a scale where this it is worth doing something about it.

How do we know that?

Because big corporations already have gone up against bigger artists. They already have shut down fan art operations that go over a certain threshold.

They already have the means to sue whoever they want if they wanted to shut down fan artists selling commissions. They always had those means.

All they really need to do is send a cease and desist to any artist who crosses the line and most will fold and if they don't well they ain't winning that's for sure.

The reason Midjourney is on their radar and is being gone after with so much vigor from those companies is their very public and blatant disregard of copyright laws and the monetization of their ai models. Midjourney can mass produce copyright infringing material and is monetizing said fact, even going as far as selling their services to corporations which then use the copyright infringing material.

They are operating on a scale that is actually damaging to the IP holders in this regard and putting forth a dangerous slippery slope that can escalate if left unchecked.

So yeah that's an actual issue to them.

Fan art on the other hand is not

Infact most of these media companies are aware that they stand more to profit from fanart as semi-free advertisements. Even commissions.

So tldr:

Disney isn't interested in suing your regular joe shmoe fan artist because they already could do that just fine. Their lawsuit against Midjourney isn't going to negatively impact any of us. They want to take down a dragon. We are ants. If they wanted to get rid of us they would have done that already but we are many and we are small and their dragon take down weapon costs resources to fire and going after us takes time so they are better off directing their efforts at dragons.
