VISUAL DIARY - 5b - The impact of the food disparity in Washington, DC seems to be something that some people aren't aware of unless you have experienced it yourself. NPR interviewed and shadowed a resident in Ward 8, east of the Anacostia River in DC, and showed her journey, struggle, and insight into what the problem is and how impactful it is. Toni Lawson is like many people in the noticeably forgotten areas of DC to simply provide equitable access and affordability to healthy food. Toni's story isn't just her story; it's many people's story and is felt deeply in the SE quadrant of the city.
Until a couple of years ago, this was also my story. To understand this culture of scarcity, you must study it, experience it, observe it, and feel its impact in order to begin figuring out how to design a solution that embodies empathy for our fellow humans in society. Toni's journey is long just to put food in her home. I have observed from experiences and through research that the very small amount of stores in the SE area of DC often charge higher prices than in neighboring quadrants (SW, NE, NW) and neighboring counties in Maryland (Prince George's County, Charles County, Montgomery County). Ethnography research on this specific topic has been sobering, and real, and creates a sense of awareness to find a better way for my community to thrive and be healthy while doing so.

Thursday Thoughts...13th July 2023...Rabbit Holes...Food Deserts...
Welcome to Thursday Thoughts which could be on any subject at all…it could be something in the news, it could be Masterchef of which I am a fan, it could be a comment on my blog or a post on social media or any emails I have read…as more often than not they take me down a rabbit hole as I can never leave it…I was one of those kids who probably drove my teachers and my parents mad as I was always…

Let's talk about Food Deserts.
Lets talk about #FoodDeserts.
I am frequently asked to explain what a food desert is. I thought I would make this short video to provide an understanding of how I approach the issue of food deserts. I have written more about them in this post about a report I was involved in, and this post is an extract from an Encyclopedia chapter that I wrote concerning food justice and foodscapes. A short video about food deserts and how…

Reposted from @eatwellexchange Fast food is notably high in fat content, and studies have found associations between fast food intake and increased weight gain. Lower socioeconomic communities having an abundance of fast food places. The lack of access to healthy food reflects a larger problem in America: food insecurity. Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. This is a problem in it’s on, but creates a great disparity on people of all ages with all types of diabetes. For most experiencing food insecurity, the problem isn’t that they’re getting too few calories, it’s that they’re getting too many of the wrong kind. Usually, they are surrounded by the cheapest and most readily available foods (fatty, fried takeout, high-sodium prepared meals, candy and soft drinks) provide plenty of calories, but they contribute to or make it hard to properly manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, kidney disease and diabetes. . Food insecurity can also increase the risk of complications because if you start skipping meals, for example, it can disrupt your blood sugar levels and put you at higher risk of hypoglycemia. Also those with diabetes who can afford only unhealthy fare may have more frequent high blood sugar levels, which can raise the risk of long-term complications. HELP US FEED COMMUNITY MEMBERS! In December @socialpracticelabs launched a hot meals initiative called COMMUNITY CUISINE to deliver some warmth to Chicago families and persons with limited mobility for Christmas Eve and we haven't stopped delivering hot meals since then. . Today we want to honor one of our newest team members! Washieka Torres has a passion for culinary arts and disrupting food disparity! . They are incubating a needs-based meal program that offers well made and nutritious hot meals. With the support of Social Practice Labs sourcing food, coordinating volunteers for deliveries, and strategically partnering with other orgs that can help the initiative get resources and supports, Washieka will be able to establish systems and practices that will enable the project to be duplicated in multiple cities! . @socialpracticelabs supports artists and cultural workers like Washieka who envision using their creative practice as a tool for community care and social action! . DONATE to Social Practice Labs COMMUNITY CUISINE program as well as our COVID-19 relief fund by sending payments via PayPal using [email protected]. . Please remember to "sent to friend" since you're not "buying a product or service" to ensure 100% of your donation goes back into the community instead of into fees. . . Let’s be honest. The struggle is real. It’s been real and it’s only getting worse. We must stop demonizing food. Instead we must understand why people consume the food they do. Do they live in food deserts where fast food is only available? Do people lack knowledge, or are they misinformed? We live in a world where a burger cost less than a fucking apple and every day there’s some new “expert” that tells you it’s ok or not ok to eat eggs. There’s a larger issue than what you eat. “Health disparities are systematic, plausibly avoidable health differences adversely affecting socially disadvantaged group.
Health disparities and health equity cannot be defined without defining social disadvantage.
Social disadvantage refers to the unfavorable social, economic, or political conditions that some groups of people systematically experience based on their relative position in social hierarchies. It means restricted ability to participate fully in society and enjoy the benefits of progress. Social disadvantage is reflected, for example, by low levels of wealth, income, education, or occupational rank, or by less representation at high levels of political office.

You may have heard the term #fooddesert before, but there’s not enough is being done about it. That’s why this week’s #companiesthatactuallygiveashit feature is about @supr.mrkt, a black woman-owned #organic pop up that serves healthy, local produce in underserved communities within the LA area. In America, 24 million people live in food deserts (areas that don’t have a proper grocery store with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy options) but @supr.mrkt is taking a stand against that by making organic options accessible to more people, and raising awareness about the importance of health and nutrition. Go give @supr.mrkt a follow, and support them if you are able (you can buy someone a box of fresh local produce!). Thank you @supr.mrkt for being a changemaker and for making a difference 💕💕 • #companiesthatactuallygiveashit was started back when there was a lot of controversy around Package Free, and people were looking to find #sustainable and #POC-led brands. Inspired by @zerowastehabesha’s #RepresentationMattersinSustainability series, the goal is to highlight brands that we should all be supporting, and show that this movement isn’t exclusively for white, upper/middle class women. I have a lot of privilege and want to lend my platform to uplifting brands and voices that have been and continue to make a difference in the world. If you know of any brands you’d like to see highlighted, please tag them in the comments below and I’ll add them to the list 😊😊 • • • #doyougiveashit #representationmatters #lowimpactmovement #zerowaste #ethical #sustainableliving #gogreen #reduce #reuse #recycle #repurpose #nowaste #notrash #noplastic #wastefree #plasticfree #vegan #ecofriendly #vegansofig #local #healthy #produce (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B37DWYVnJRv/?igshid=o8mxpnue1imb

Here it is - mom’s burcher muslie cereal with fresh peaches 🍑 and it’s delicious but here’s the downside - never again will I buy fruit from that fruit truck. It took 10 peaches for me to find enough decent fruit to add to two bowls of cereal and even at that they weren’t good. The peaches are heavily bruised, mealy, stringy, and tasteless 😩 I paid an arm and a leg for these and it looks like many will have to be thrown out. This is when I get so frustrated to live in a place where good summer fruit is so hard to find. 😭 #outhereontheprairie #fooddesert #peaches #burchermuesli (at North Dakota) https://www.instagram.com/p/BztLXiFJ-27/?igshid=uqys1vkyner2
