Idia would eventually propose the idea, but after reading some fan fiction, you had an irresistible urge to recreate this game and play it with your boyfriend.

His cheeks and hair flush a furious crimson colour. Idia is intimidated, but he doesn't even think about complaining, at least not honestly. His reaction pours an unusual doze of animus and bravery into your veins as you open the pocky box.

“Don't move,” you instruct surprisingly calmly, as you almost sit on his lap (again, since when are you so confident?). His computer chair squawks quietly and rolls back a few inches, but the distance between you and Idia stays the same.

Perfect. He can't get away.

“I... I know!" he chokes and holds his breath as you put your biscuit stick between your lips. You look at him, idly wondering if Idia will dare to play this game.

You had no great expectations, but he surprises you. He moved closer and takes a bite of the dainty, trying not to look at you from under his lashes. Too preoccupied with the biscuit separating you, he doesn't even taste the sweetness of chocolate.

Idia knows perfectly well that life isn't a game. If it was, however, a current moment would have to be a hidden scene, unlocked only by an absurd amount of affinity points.

When he plays, his heart never beats as fast as it does now, although Idia prides himself on knowing the gems among otome games.

The biscuit disappears. There is no piece left. No distance. The kiss you share is short but sweet in every sense of the word. Warm. Chocolatey. Have it lasted a while longer, kiss would taste like fruity orange you drank before.

Idia's hands clench on the fabric of your t-shirt, right at your sides. He wouldn't have been able to control the shaking of his hands any other way. Being so anxious, he needed to muster up courage not to move away. And he held out. He is still beside you. He doesn't want you to move away, he concludes as soon as you separate.

You nod, and Ortho flies a little higher. He gets so close you can feel the tongues of fire forming his hairstyle. They aren't hot. They resemble lukewarm water: soft to the touch, liquid but dry. 

“I am very happy that we are friends,” Ortho whispers.

Before you can turn around, he places a kiss between your ear and temple by pressing the warm metal of his mask against your skin. If it wasn't for the quiet sound of the kiss he play-back-ed, you wouldn't have understood Ortho's charming gesture so quickly.

“It's not a secret,” you sigh lightly. It's hard not to smile. You lean towards Ortho, who calculates your next move. The result must please him, because not only does he not turn away from you, but he waits patiently. You place a kiss on his forehead. “I also like you very much.”

the movies are not in order !!!

ONE. sevika is probably on and on about the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, she seems like the woman who would be obsessed with cars and everything that involves them. her modern au self is pretty clear to moss- she is probably a mechanic if we are headcanon her an everyday job. a woman who is obsessed with not just how pretty and polished her cars look but that she has the best engine in it with the best parts, running with gas that saves the most money for her while also giving her all the miles.

TWO. everybody has a favorite horror movie, even if they are scared of the gore or the jumpscares. she is a sucker for the original SCREAM movie, like the first one, and she tolerates the sequels but the first one rocks her world like nothing else.

THREE. PULP FICTION is up there with the rest. it's a crime/drama movie with hitmen, it's pacey, punchy, and at times hilarious, quite a movie, and sevika watches it whenever she feels the mood to fit. she too thinks that this is tarantino's best work.

FOUR. every sign is there for sevika to be a fan of the ROCKY movies because ?!?!?! it also an older movie but there isn't a better boxing movie, you can fight her on it but could never change her mind. rocky's story has inspired sevika to work out and get into the ring for a while.

FIVE. while she too thinks sometimes killing is enough and that it is getting older sevika still loves the JOHN WICK movies, the first one is probably her favorite but all the others come close to first place, it's hard to tell. it's full of action, mystery, and thriller movie, keanu reeves looks fantastic in those jackets and his mustang is something to die for.

Im an uber driver. One time a passenger asked me if I was afraid of picking up a serial killer. I said "what are the odds of 2 serial killers being in one UBER?" He laughed, I laughed, we watched each other through the rear view mirror the rest of the ride.

i usually don't have anything in mind when i tag with a ship it's more ~vibes~ i get that make me think of a ship for a specific interaction but i will try to press my brain juices to developp this one a little.

[i'm finishing this at 1am on a sunday night before work so be warned about possible dumbassery. they go fast (and furious) because i don't wanna spend the next century on it. also very unrealistic things because i don't care also i'm not a serial killer and don't know all the logistics behind it and don't want to know. uwufication of serial killers. i mean, it's me, if it's not a little crackish is it really something made by my brain juices? i do not approve of the killing of real people tho. (putting this here just in case) fictional people is ok (depending who when how).]

so obviously it's an au but i'm gonna keep victor as a figure skater. yuuri had to stop figure skating just before entering senior competition after an injury and told everybody he didn't want to hear anything about it ever again and found a job as a taxi driver. yuuri is sometimes hired to drive important people around because he's discreet and a safe driver.

one day, yuuri is called to get someone at the airport.

it's victor.

yuuri obviously recognizes him. because he's still very much a victor nikiforov fan. and still very much follows figure skating. but he says nothing and just starts driving after usual work related small talk.

victor is a little bit curious about the very silent japanese man who picked him up from the airport. (he said his name was yuuri). he's so used to be recognized everywhere at this point that someone not reacting to him at all is catching his attention. doesn't hurt that yuuri is also very pretty.

-you don't care about who your clients are don't you? asks victor, a finger on his mouth.

-why should i? (yuuri's grip on the wheel gets a little tighter but that's between him and his car.)

yuuri has a very nice voice, very gentle.

-aren't you afraid of picking up a serial killer?

yuuri startles a little. victor sounded genuinely curious so yuuri keeps his voice casual and goes for a 'joke':

-what are the odds of two serial killers being in one uber?

victor can't help but laugh and is rewarded by yuuri's chuckle. still. that was a little weird. right? victor can't help but get tense. and horny. he stays silent, looking at yuuri.

yuuri starts to get anxious, can't stop looking at the rear view mirror. and every time he does, victor is already looking at him.

-don't you know who i am? asks victor after long minutes of silence.

-i know your name and your job, yuuri's eyes meet victor's before going back to the road, but to say i know who you are is a little bit of a reach.

there's a breath of silence and that's just enough for victor to make a choice.

-would you like to know me better?

victor can already hear yakov from the future screaming in the distance. but should he really care when yuuri says yes with such an intensity in his eyes and voice that it makes victor's body shiver in anticipation.

the rest of the drive is silent, yuuri only focusing on the road but victor can't help smiling looking at yuuri's red ears from his back seat.

victor is already opening a bottle of champagne when he hears the soft click of his hotel room locking behind yuuri.

victor smiles at yuuri as he approaches.

-it was an accident the first time you killed someone right?

victor almost drops the bottle.

-how...

victor looks at yuuri. really looks at yuuri. it's still the same man but he's holding himself slightly differently and there's something a little dangerous in his eyes. victor inhales sharply.

-you! it's you!!! right?!

yuuri lowers his head with a shy smile and that's all the confirmation victor needs.

-i've always wondered who it was who copied me so perfectly...and it's you.

victor can't stop the awe in his voice. the smile yuuri directs at him is so bright and full of admiration? understanding?...love? victor feels like crying.

-how did you know?

yuuri shrugs.

-i wasn't sure at first, i just noticed that your skating had changed. you just seemed more free on the ice. and i was curious about the reason so i spent some time researching and then more people died and i just...realized.

victor can't believe this man.

-why did you start doing it too?

-i just wanted to help you. give you an alibi or two.

victor can't help but laugh.

-i-...really??

yuuri just shrugs again.

-what can i say? i'm a fan of all of your work and it would be a shame to put you in a jail.

victor shakes his head in disbelief. this man...

-i guess i'll have to give you a proper thank you then, but come sit and talk with me first.

victor serves them both a cup of champagne while yuuri takes a sit next to him.

-so tell me yuuri, do you like dogs?

-i don't like dogs victor, i love them.

victor is gonna marry him.

-i can't believe they still haven't figured out there are two killers, victor says later when they're lying in the bed.

-not my problem, says yuuri before kissing him again.

yura gets very close to being killed when he gets into yuuri's cab and starts talking shit about victor. he's only saved because he recognizes yuuri and yuuri is too surprised and forgets his rising anger. also yura is young and they become friends. but it's close!

CC is clearly biased for Herondales. She tries really hard to make the reader find Herondales attractive the truth is I never felt more dry reading about Jace, Stephen, Will and James. They do nothing for me. They all have the same personality except for James who has next to no personality aside for being constantly horny for Cordeila. I dare any person disagreeing with my statement give me 5 difference between Will, Jace and Stephen personality wise. Despite all her efforts to make us like Herondales I always found the other characters more attractive. Jem over Will. Anyone over Jace. Michael over stephen. Anna over James honestly anyone over James. Kit is a mini jace no originality. Freaking Manuel from TDA came off as more attractive than Jace and that says alot 💀.

Oh and can someone please tell me her obsession with eyes, weird ass body proportions and no one mentions the way shadowhunters walk sounds hilarious ngl like what what do you mean they walk like cats or lions or dancers. If shadowhunters's walks are like cats does that mean Jace walks are cattier cuz of all the extra angel blood. I try to picture Jace's walking and all I can imagine is Andrew tate's looney tunes fruity ass walk.

Her books are the fast food of literature as a booktuber described it as.

I said sometime before that the side characters are more interesting because they aren't (as) surrounded by Clare's bias or manipulative narration. Therefore more likable because I am not force-fed how great and amazing they are, I just get to take my time with them and get familiarized with their characters on my own. Problems also arise with Jace having problems more important than the others, that his issues are the grandest and most highlighted. Also Jace, Clary, and Simon are the only necessary characters whose stories are tied to the main plot. Even their romances (Clary with both Jace and Simon) have plot relevance. Others not so much.

As Clare's writing has always been more or less mostly telling than showing, it's not surprising that she needs to tell how amazing the Herondale's are instead of actually basing her pretense on actually showing. Instead the readers are just offered this premise in every story, every other character is written just admiring and loving them, so it must be true? Just have characters fawn over someone and you bet the readers will also. Right.

Clare seems to think that other characters telling things is showing.

Clare's attention strips any side character of all intrigue and turns them into what Clare's protagonists usually are. Then they become all looks and hair and eye colors and wear white shirts through which their marks shine through (like Jace literally in every TMI book). Some concepts which Clare presents in her series are complex and complicated, I can agree with that, but her writing is unable to capture any depth or meaning of any of them. Attributing factor to this her always ending up focusing majorly on love, especially the romantic kind of the main couple, as the motivator. I've read amazing pieces of TSC fan fiction, the kind of thoughtful and honest looks on the characters that Clare is unable to acknowledge on her part.

Her writing only presents the shallowest of emotions. Her writing on grief, loss, or love aren't really thought-provoking, just more cookie-cutter ideas on top of the previous ones. Not that all writing absolutely needs or has to be insightful, it's just that people pretend her writing is deeper than it actually is. Like people think chopped-up sentences are anything but surface-level poetry when in its essence poetry as an art and craft is more than that.

Everyone is so on money with James' lack of personality. When he got furious with Grace (rightly so BUT) I felt really weird about it. You're message really helped me figure it out though: I had no idea of his personality nor any prediction on how he may react to more controversial happenings. Well, that's not true. Everyone on the Righteous Side of things in TSC always react with fury, roasting the antagonists crisp with their verbalism. But still I had no idea. Who is this guy calling Grace a criminal and a fiend? I don't know him at all.

And what makes the Herondales great really? I don't see why James or Will are anymore heroic than Clary, Cordelia, Emma, Simon, Alec, or Isabelle. I don't think Tessa as particularly heroic but that's also my faint memory of TID and disgust of her talking, so this is not to be entirely trusted.

So here’s a funny (read: stupid, trust me I came up with it) idea for a Miraculous Ladybug AU.

Mostly it just changes the way the Butterfly and Peafowl Miraculous work. They can still have their symbolism of Transformation and whateverthefuck that’s not the important part.

In this AU, Nooroo is like a djinn, he grants wishes but here’s the catch, the wishes have to be phrased in such a way that they are changing something about the person wishing, think less “I wish for world peace!” and more “I wish I could bring the world to peace”. Along with the whole ‘there has to be a strong emotion tied to it’ stuff.

And that’s why Hawky has to be so convincing, he litterally cannot take control of them until they make a wish. And the really fun part? Since MLB is set in a fictional universe, the writers could have it so that butterflies are known for granting wishes or something like that, like shooting stars or dandelions (which would also fix the issue of why it’s mostly kids who get targeted kids are more likely to make a wish than an adult) with the added caution of djinn (be careful what you wish for). So of course people would tell their wishes to passing butterflies never knowing that good ole’ Gabe might be listening in.

‘How does this become an AU’ I hear you cry? Because it could change the whole premise of the show. It isn’t just angry teens that were angry at the wrong moment, it’s an embarrased Ivan muttering in the hallway, “I wish I was strong enough to shut Kim up.” (an eight foot tall rock monster filled with rage would certainly do the trick), a slighted Alya staring blankly up at the sky and saying, “I wish I was fast enough to catch Chloe as Ladybug.” (teleporting through phones and litterally being able to pause someone certainly sounds promising), a heartbroken Alix staring at her family heirloom, “I wish I could go back in time and fix this.” (well that’s a little tricky but I’m sure your friends won’t mind helping!)

All that to say, the wish shapes the power. The stronger the wish, the stronger the abilities. Nooroo and the Butterfly are ‘meant’ (heavy quotation marks) to be used to lift people up when everything looks awful.

‘Didn’t you mention something about the Peafowl Miraculous?’ Why yes I did, I’m glad you remembered!

As for Duusuu. Duusuu’s powers aren’t wish based at all, in fact, a person doesn’t even have to realize that his powers have been at work, until it’s happening. In this AU Duusuu’s feathers (from the fan not his tail) attach to a person and act as a kind of ‘emotional spounge’ (again explaining why kids and teens are more likely to be targeted than adults) any excess emotions (like you finally beat a really hard level of a video game, or you just found out that your longterm partner has been cheating on you for most of it) get stored up, and when enough energy has been stored... you get to see a personification of the strongest emotion reflected as yourself. Let’s take Marinette as an example on say the day she got expelled because of Lila. Depending on how you personally (as the person potentially writing in this AU) take it, she was most likely either feeling furious or heartbroken. She would then be confronted with either a version of herself that just wanted to destroy everything in her path and go full scortched earth (furious) or a version that curled up on the stairs she supposedly pushed Lila down and cried her heart out. 

In other words Duusuu and the Peafowl are ‘meant’ (those same heavy quotation marks) to be used to either force a person to confront the worst parts of themselves (you have anger issues, you probably have clinical deppression, you are a smug self-righteous jerk who needs to step off their soapbox) or show them the best parts of themselves (you brighten other peoples days whenever you compliment them, you put everything you had into this project and deserve to feel proud of it, you love your family and friends and show it in your own way). So in other words, Duusuu is like a free dose of therapy. And when I say excess emotion, I don’t mean you had one good or bad day and that tipped it over, I mean you’ve had a consistent good or bad month before it tips over at that last straw.

Ironically, Nooroo and Duusuu aren’t meant to be active in the same place at the same time. Add in the misuse of the miraculous and boom, you’ve got the miraculous sentimonsters from the show.

Second of all I couldn’t get the thought of, “What if the reason Plagg was so annoyed at Adrien calling him a jinni was because Nooroo was litterally the origin of that story and he didn’t want to be called a copycat.” and it just kind of spiraled from there.

so i know you’ll disagree but i have to tell y’all something

I HATE THE CROWN (season 4 in particular)

don’t get me wrong. i used to like the show. seasons 1 and 2 were genuinely good and well done. but the crown is going downhill and no force in the universe is able to stop it

let me explain

from season 3 to season 5 the crown has become unbearable to watch. it’s boring, bland and makes zero sense. and no i’m not talking about “they changed historical events in a work of fiction, boo-hoo”. the plot just sucks and internal logic is flawed

speaking of season 4. i can’t even tell you how furious i was while watching it. and may i remind you I’M A PRINCESS DIANA FAN

so the story begins with diana and charles meeting which is a useless metaphor that screams “look how smart we are”.

then we have the scene when they talk (and look like they are in a hurry for lunch). then a theatre scene. then a scene in balmoral and this is freaking it. DIANA DOESN’T EVEN TALK TO CHARLES IN EPISODE 2. philip has literally more chemistry with di than chuck

we are not explained why he decided to marry her, we are not shown any scenes when they are discussing their marriage. but we have a bloody phone call with margaret, elizabeth and queen mother. thanks. we needed it

then comes the part that makes me scream. they picked a very sensitive topic: diana’s bulimia ONLY to treat it like a joke!

i’m not joking. if you only watched the crown, tell me why did diana become bulimic? the show says it was here nerves. but lemme tell you something mr peter morgan sir THIS IS NOT HOW IT WORKS.

you know the main version is that charles commented on diana’s weight and that’s why she became bulimic. i’m not blaming him rn, i just think that this version would make more sense in a drama based on 2 people’s relationship

but we can’t have anything interesting. so we’ll cut diana’s character completely to make her whiny, hysterical and always crying. and no, she wasn’t like this. at all

in episode 6. charles (after hating diana and calling her pathetic) OUT OF NOWHERE says that he loves her. just why? care to explain? i don’t understand as your drama show pictures literally anything but the only interesting storyline

and no morgan i don’t get why people love diana. in the crown she does literally nothing. we don’t see her sense of humor, her kindness, her commitment to the job. nothing. and when they try to show it it’s so fast that you can miss it while blinking

and i hate episode 6 for literally making fun of bulimia while mixing some indian rituals and vomiting. it makes no sense whatsoever, it doesn’t show anything. morgan literally says “see that puking crying mess? that’s you sis. LOL”

and then the conflict between charles and diana escalates and they make zero efforts to make their marriage work. no cute stories from real life, no real tragedy. they just yell at each other like two unstable teenagers. because that’s how you write the conflicts to make people empathize: you cry and SHOUT

in the end i got so tired of seeing diana constantly crying and purging that i almost dropped the show

they don’t tell us real stories as they change everything. but changes make zero sense within their own plot. it’s unbearable

and what’s worse season 5 treats diana as a different person. as if season 4 was actually interesting and she had more than 1 character trait

i dropped the show and i won’t watch it

i love to CHEW on things so i am a big fan of crunchy things & also gummies/fruit snacks. i love a novelty item that i've never tried as well. fruits are for sure a big time fave

Rookie-Critic's Film Review Weekend Wrap-Up - Week of 4/24-4/30/2023

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019, dir. David Leitch) This was a good off-shoot for the F&F series. The Rock & Jason Statham feel comfortable as the titular duo and have excellent on-screen chemistry, and the action feels clean and exciting, which is no surprise considering the film was directed by John Wick-veteran David Leitch, who fits the franchise like a glove. I really enjoyed all of the climactic fight scenes with Hobbs' family in Samoa. Honestly, the more Cliff Curtis can be in major feature films, the better. Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby also make for great additions to the growing franchise. It never really blew my mind like some of the mainline Fast films have, but I don't think it was really trying to. Sometimes a movie is just good, dumb, clean fun, and that's perfectly alright with me. I just hate that this film (along with a multitude of other behind-the-scenes reasons) means that we probably won't be seeing Luke Hobbs in any of the remaining Fast movies.

F9: The Fast Saga (2021, dir. Justin Lin) After the wholly disappointing and, frankly, upsetting misstep that was The Fate of the Furious, I was curious to see if F9 would continue the downward trend, or if it would step its game up to bring some of the franchise's former glory back. When in doubt, trust in Justin Lin, who comes swooping back into the franchise for the first time since Fast & Furious 6 to save the day, with fan favorite character Han Lue in tow. This is biggest, wildest fast film yet, and I mean that as a compliment. That's not to say that it's the best (that honor is still held by Fast Five), but it does return a lot of the wonder and sincerity that Five, Six, and (to a lesser extent) Seven had. Not to mention that it is the first film in the franchise to incorporate Sean, Twinkie, and Earl from Tokyo Drift into the family in a major way since Tokyo Drift (if you don't count a tiny cameo from Lucas Black's Sean in Furious 7). Nothing about F9 feels as baseline or low-effort as the stuff in Fate did. Even the introduction of a mysterious third Toretto sibling that, for some reason, we hadn't heard about for the past eight films feels out of place or shoehorned in. Needless to say, where Fate of the Furious had me wondering if the franchise was receding in quality, F9 has me just as pumped to go see Fast X in May as I was after watching Fast Five.

Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (2023, dir. Guy Ritchie) I went into this with a lot of apprehension. I was not a huge fan of the last Guy Ritchie film that tried to take a more serious approach to its tone (2021's Wrath of Man). It had a lot of grandstanding machismo bullshit that I hate to see in modern filmmaking. However, Ritchie really surprised me with The Covenant. He has Jake Gyllenhaal acting at the top of his game here with an equally impressive turn from Dar Salim as Ahmed the interpreter. While the story is fiction, it highlights a huge problem in the aftermath of the War on Terror: thousands of Afghani interpreters were hired by the U.S. military and promised special immigration visas for their service; a promise that turned out to be hollow. It sends its message without grandstanding and is critical of the U.S. military without putting itself on a soapbox. The film does tend to get overly self-indulgent during big sweeping climactic scenes and in certain emotional ones, as well. It's the one thing about the film that feels out of place, but even in spite of that, The Covenant is an excellent film and proof that Ritchie is capable of making a more serious-minded, message-oriented film than the humorous heist or caper films he's known for.

Chevalier (2023, dir. Stephen Williams) I'll just say up front that my bias might show a little in my scoring of this one. I have never been the biggest fan of 16-1800's period pieces. I'm not sure what it is, but something about them has just never gelled with me. That being said, there's nothing really wrong with Chevalier. In fact, it is, in my opinion, much better than the average film of this sensibility. The acting is fantastic and it sheds light on an oft-overlook but quintessentially influential figure in both classical music and the French revolution. The music is a huge plus in the film's favor, of course, and the costumes are, as is the case with most film's set in this era, masterfully crafted. I think my biggest qualm with the film is that it stops right as the French revolution is getting started and then tells the audience that Chevalier went on to be a great leader during the Revolution. Maybe it's just me, but I think that sounds interesting enough to make it's own film about. This almost makes me wonder (and I don't ever really feel this way about films) if this would have been better suited as an 6-8 episode miniseries as opposed to a film. We still could have focused a 2-3 episodes on Chevalier's childhood and young adulthood in France's pre-Revolution music scene, but then dedicated an entire half of the show to his accomplishments during the Revolution. Regardless, I don't want that to take away from the fact the Chevalier was quite good, and definitely worth the ticket price. I just think more could have been done with the wealth of untold history that exists within the lifetime of this figure.

Polite Society (2023, dir. Nida Manzoor) This movie absolutely ruled. It gave me all of the frenetic energy of the best Edgar Wright films while also giving me the genre-bending and jaw-dropping off-the-wall attitude of something like Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. This was a film that wasn't afraid to go for it in every way, shape, and form. From campy-but-well-choreographed fight sequences, to plot twist that twist so hard they'll make your head spin, to an unabashed approach to a female-empowerment narrative. Not to mention a story that is very uniquely Indian that touches on the nature of arranged marriages and classicism. Polite Society had everything that I look for in a film, and is a very early contender for the best of 2023 list. I'll save some of my more in-depth thoughts on stuff like the acting, writing, and cinematography for this week's full-length, but just know that if anything I've mentioned above sounds even remotely interesting, make this a priority watch (I don't want to say definitively that this is the best of the weekend's new movies because I haven't seen Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret yet, and I hear that is pretty amazing, as well).

A Good Man (2014, dir. Keoni Waxman) Yikes. Just... yikes. Friday movie nights with my college friends can get pretty wild sometimes. I've never seen a Steven Seagal film before, and maybe this wasn't the best one to start with (or, inversely, maybe it's the best one to start with). Seagal is clearly past his prime here (or, again, maybe in his prime, depending on your perspective), and looks like he's constantly on the verge of passing out. His words come out slurred and mumbled like he's on his deathbed, and his "action" in the film is cut around so heavily you really never see him actually do anything. The story is non-existent and the writing contains some of the most unintentionally hilarious one-liners I have ever heard in my entire life (I'm partial to the one where Seagal utters the baffling sentence "Well, I'm sorry to hear that, because now I'll snatch every motherfucker birthday." No, there's no typo there, that is verbatim what he says. My meme review is that this is great. Real "The Room" caliber stuff, here. My actual review is that obviously Seagal is a lunatic that is just self-funding whatever production he can fart out in an afternoon at this point. Honestly, if you want some quality takes on this, visit the Letterbox'd page.

Sisu (2023, dir. Jalmari Helander) I really wanted to love Sisu. I'm as much a fan of mindless action movies as the next guy, but the truth is I thought it was just ok. It delivers on exactly what it promised everyone in the trailers, one-man army kills the crap out of some Nazis for 91 minutes, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. There are a handful of really fun set pieces and lots of entertaining gore for fans of that kind of thing, but it just felt incredibly hollow. There are no characters in Sisu, only templates of archetypes that things happen to. No one learns anything, there's no journey to be had, merely an avatar quickly making his way through bodies to get to a destination. I'm not implying that every single movie needs to have some grand, elaborate story with deep and complex characters and rich subtext or anything like that, but I would have liked at least some substance to this. There are still things to enjoy in Sisu, and from what I've read I'm a slight outlier in not thinking this is incredible, but it just didn't connect with me. However, don't let that stop you from seeing this in the theater. The cinematography and style alone are worth the big screen experience.
