pairing: clive x gn!reader

summary: you sneak outside during the ball & clive follows you to ask for a dance

you had sneaked away from the ball to get a bit of fresh air. there were so many people inside, so many nobles. you weren't used to this and being surrounded by them was a bit overwhelming and made you feel out of place. you knew the only reason you were here was because you had once belonged to the deliverance, otherwise a commoner like you wouldn't have been invited to such a grande event. 

from the garden you could still hear the faint sound of the music. you closed your eyes, taking in the distant noises, before someone's voice quickly snapped you out of your trance. 

"would you like to dance?"

your head whipped around and leaning against the door frame was clive, who was smiling at you. you were still a bit caught off guard, so before you managed to reply, clive stepped closer and continued to talk. 

"you haven't danced all evening, so i thought maybe you were a bit shy. but the two of us could dance out here! nobody would see us, it would be just us…"

clive reached out his hand for you to take. you hesitated, glancing down on it before a faint red covered your cheeks, barely visible in the dark. clive patiently waited, until you finally took his hand and nodded softly. 

"i think i'd like that…"

Pitch: Ferdinand/Clive role reversal au.

emry i'm going to kill you. also his name is Fernand.

so this would be a fernand focused fic, and i'd try to change as little as possible in terms of backstory so we get to examine the same characters, just under different circumstances.

We start with a focus on Clive's decision to step down from the Deliverance. Through Fernand's close relationship with him, we see that it's not a strategic decision - more like a desperate attempt to flee the guilt of getting his wife captured. Fernand tries to convince him to stand his ground, but in the end, Clive does even worse - he runs away.

Lukas returns with Mycen's alleged grandson to a fractured Deliverance, with the soldiers reeling from the loss of a leader and Fernand reeling from the argument he had with Clive the night he left. In this vacuum, Fernand steps up to lead the Deliverance. He's determined to fight for the ideals Clive so carelessly abandoned, to stand fast where others fell short, and even to rescue Mathilda, if it means that much to Clive, damn it.

Meanwhile, Clive makes a deal with the enemy, swearing himself to their service in exchange for his wife's freedom. (What good are ideals anyway, if they can't protect the people you care about?) Mathilda comes back to the Deliverance, but she herself is demoralized by the loss of Clive. For the first time, she and Fernand start to find solidarity and comfort in each other instead of Fernand seeing her as a rival.

The main part of the fic focuses on Fernand trying to step up into the role of leadership (working alongside Alm, of course) and confront his own prejudice towards the commoners that are now his closest allies. On the battlefield, he repeatedly clashes with Clive, who has given up on being able to rejoin the people he loves and wishes only for Fernand and Mathilda to withdraw from the war and ensure their own personal safety.

Our big finale, of course, is the scene in Duma Tower (no spoilers for emry so i'm going to be a little vague from this point on). Clive sees the light about what he's done, etc etc, and his battlefield respect for Fernand turns into real admiration as he realizes how much Fernand has grown in the time he's been away. They can have a nice little polycule moment before Fernand and Mathilda head off with the Deliverance to go fight the final battle.

People hate on Clive too much, and I'm sick of it.

"Oh, he's statistically mediocre and worse than his wife -" This is a game that allows you to use literally everyone on the map at, and there isn't really a reason not to. There is no bad unit in the game. Just give him an effective weapon or something.

"Oh, but his res is awful"- EVERYONE'S RESISTANCE IS AWFUL IN THIS GAME. Just be wary of mages. And witches are BS anyways.

"Oh but he's a classist" THATS THE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER. He's a genuinely good guy who wants to support his friends and lovely wife and uplift the commonfolk. He's just bad at it because he's been raised in a society where he's never had to suffer or be hungry because of his high birth, and thus doesn’t really understand their plight.

Yet he is still sympathetic to their issues and is respectful to his commoner comrades. His attempts to mend the class scism are honorable BECAUSE of the inherit hypocrisy of his views and postion. Not in spite of it.

"But what about the time he yells at Alm for failing to save Matilda or encourages you to kill Delthea." God forbid characters have flaws and show them off. Plus, that's not fair. We're comparing his beloved wife and confidant to a random girl who he doesn't know and is currently trying to kill them all with powerful magic. He doesn't know we have fucking Subdue. I didn't have Subdue.

...I didn't know I cared about him so much. But ig I do.

Speaking of unification, the end of FE3/12 was so disappointing. FE1 ended with each country still being independent, which was perfect. But no, the sequel had to do a 180 so that Marth could rule over all of Archanea.

Especially since it comes with a...disturbing trend of putting female rulers back in their place: Minerva, Nyna, Sheena...

Like you would seriously want me to believe that Minerva would be happy to settle in a convent? But guys, she wasn't competent T.T. She couldn't rule like Michalis and it ended in an internal crisis.

But Sheena didn't want to rule. She just wanted to live as an "ordinary happy girl" UwU. Yes, Archanea gave us the wonderful Shiida, but Kaga's sexism shines here.

The worst thing is Michalis' ending in FE12. They wanted to keep him alive, fine, they did the same with Camus/Sirius after all. But he either gets to rule over Macedon again (so it means that there were no consequences for his actions unlike in the original game) or conquer another continent.

Perhaps they wanted to show that it realistically made no sense that an ambitious man like Michalis would give up on his dream, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. You can kill your father, be a tyrannical ruler, but don't worry, you will get your throne back or you will either get to conquer a whole new land. Yeah!

I would have made more sense if Michalis was the one to give up on everything and perhaps become a monk if they wanted to show that he was trying to atone. After all, he dies in the original version. It could have shown that the old him was indeed dead and that he was now going on a different path, thanks to Maria.

The sheer fact that Michalis wasn't kept dead in the remake sort of pisses me - why keeping him alive after kind of saving Maria ?

Was it to have a "good end" where no one dies, or because you'd feel uwu for poor Michalis who :

Murdered his dad, had his youngest sister kidnapped, fought against another sister etc...

And as you said, what kind of message this leaves that he gets to survive to conquer other lands, after the mess he did in Archanea? Was it a joke or just to piss on the original writers ?

So between Kaga's sexism and the "but earl grey" nonsense from the "modern" devs really did a number of FE3/12 to me lol

The only character I can "realistically" see abandoning her throne is Nyna, because of the guilt she must feel regarding Hardin's fall but then I'm always reminded at that person @crushednugget found that said Nyna is responsible for the war in FE3/12 and I'm just...
