Idk if I asked this question already or not, but do you think Tom Riddle was actually racist against muggleborns or do you think he used it as a tool to gain power?

You actually never asked this question and since I’ve been thinking about this forever this is a great opportunity!

Honestly, I’ve been at a crossroad with this for forever and a half but I think I’ve came to a semblance of a decision? The biggest problem is that we never got Voldemorts clear opinion on muggleborns, and even though he persecuted them there’s several reasons why someone would do that to a population. I also just think Voldemort hated everyone and considered himself above all else so it’s been hard for me to pinpoint his possible opinion on them.

I think he looked down on them, but not really because of their blood but because of how little power they held. I’ve mentioned in the past how Hogwarts is pretty much set up for the failure of the muggleborns and to prop up the purebloods. This means they hold no footing in the magical world in anyway unless they have connections or are magically powerful.

What this does is it makes him far less likely to try and cater to them and they are less likely to agree with him since his goal is to gain power and they wish to be accepted. They would want an equal world, a world where they have a chance. However, they hold no power financially or publicly like purebloods or physically like werewolves and giants. This means the best course of action is to get rid of them, especially when all the groups that support Voldemort don’t like them (dark creatures are less likely to care for them since they’ve been taught to fear them).

Now, I have a reason as to why I don’t think he cares for blood: Lily. Lily is the reason why I don’t think he cares for it as much as he seems to. While Snape may have been a good DE and given Voldemort valuable information it isn’t enough for Voldemort to so willingly agree to try and keep her alive and even try to recruit her. He wanted her to join him to an extent, saw her value despite having “filthy” blood, and asked more than once for her to move aside.

Lily was powerful in her own right and it was recognized despite her having inferior blood. She is the woman who defeated him the first time and brought the first Wizarding War to an end, she’s a one in a million. Voldemort must have seen it to an extent, that means he has to have the ability to look past blood. I mean, even before this point he did try to recruit Lily and James, it being one of the ways they defied him according to JKR.

Blood doesn’t mean anything to him in my opinion, it all has to do with power.

Not to mention how Snape, a halfblood, is one of his highest regarded spies. While they may not have as much prejudice against them if blood was everything halfbloods would never be recruited. Voldemort would’ve never considered Harry Potter, another halfblood, to be his biggest threat over the pureblood Neville Longbottom. He himself is a halfblood and considers himself above everyone else and was wary of the halfblood Albus Dumbledore.

He’s not consistent enough in his personal interactions with those of “lesser” blood to truly be a blood purist in my humble opinion. Especially when we look at how he treated the situation regarding our queen Lily (yes, I love her, what about it?). I do think he recruited muggleborns if they were powerful enough, were useful. Blood isn’t everything when there’s something else called power, even if those two correlate significantly in HP.
