hate being a free speech nerd after freaks like ben shapiro ruined the word association for young progressives and leftists. but because of that, now I’m seeing so many young, queer, ostensibly “progressive” people online agitating for the government to regulate and make illegal certain forms of artwork for being obscene.
gay & trans youth (and, more concerningly, non-youth) online calling people freaks & saying they should be on a watchlist or arrested for creating art is genuinely alarming to me. i’m not being facetious when i describe it as a full movement of people, with deviant identities, radicalizing themselves against deviant sexualities and advocating for the government to rebuild the gallows they once hanged us with …
i also hate being a free speech nerd bc it puts me in the position to defend art & people i dislike, and because no one online* understands the concept of advocating for things they don’t personally benefit from, people accuse you of the same horrible things.
——
*barring some principled marxists who read theory, but as i said, no one online. at least in the west. it’s not that the rest of the world is better at this necessarily, so much as that the western (christian) countries are profoundly self-interested on the question of identity. in this post, i appeal to this, pointing out that the attempt to limit the rights of others will fall back on them, in recognition of the fact that americans writ large do not care unless they also get harmed, and even then, do not mind so long as the people they dislike do.
#this isn’t quite#fandom wank#shipping discourse#whatever you block; but it is adjacent.#purity culture#censorship#etc. anyways i called my senators to thank them for voting against RFK. after reading another queer young adult advocate against free speech#i might start crossposting longer form essays on dreamwidth#included reading comprehension notes in the fn bc no one on this website can read either#the shipping antis are a smaller subset of the broader anti-sex wave on the left but within the niche are the most affected#and by ‘left’ i mean anywhere from rank-and-file dems to ‘progressive’ liberals to self-described socialists & communists#i’ve even seen self-described anarchists advocate for certain art to be illegal. which i do have to admit is kind of funny.

another fun tech fool decision ive made is that im highly aware of the foibles of having all your files saved to one specific machine, particularly being unable to access them on other computers, yet i nurse an instinctive hatred for the cloud. Bro I Do Not Trust You
#well i put some shit on there obviously but like. microsofts Keep All Your Shit On The Cloud stuff can fuck right off#my relationship to tech is very much defined by the fact that im a hipster with a pathological hatred for the mainstream#i dont like using websites instead of programs i dont like updating software i dont like using bluetooth#i love it when tech is inconvenient and bad#and like thats genuinely impacting my life a little bcos there are things i actively avoid for being mainstream but whatevs!#its fine. also just dont ever try to get me to watch something i perceive as 'popular'#which can range from big new movies to shit i only know bcos i have one mutual who posts abt it#we have no idea why we hate that we think its bcos of the whole 'formative years spent on reviews side of youtube' thing#now if u try to get me to watch a video essay abt a book ive never read ill trying to hit you with hammers#we're rehabilitating we're getting more into actually experiencing art for ourselves instead of living life secondhand!#which we're bad at bcos we fucked it and now we see 'reading books' as a Task that takes Effort whereas reading fic is free#but yknow. smile. i just need to get into meditation and ill b fixed itll b fine. just need to meditate#sidenote its hard to meditate when you flinch away from a lack of stimuli#both from an adhd 'boredom is pain' perspective and from a plural 'Dont Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts' perspective#anyway where the fuck was i. its been like 40 minutes in the library and ive spent all of them textposting#oh well u guys love the sound of my voice and i am so so awesome. youre welcome for more of my words. yay

Script to oppose ongoing military aid to Israel
Dear Congressperson______,
Now that the temporary ceasefire is over, it is imperative we continue to oppose the genocide of Palestinian people. I am asking you to oppose H.Res.346 and end U.S. military aid to Israel. U.S. weapons are linked to the death of 11,180 Palestinians and counting. Not only is it our moral imperative to refuse to fund the slaughter of civilians, as your office was recently informed by the Center for Constitutional Rights, there is potential legal liability for aiding and abetting genocide through congressional acts. In a new lawsuit, Palestinians are suing President Biden for complicity in genocide. Please take action now to stop genocide and end all U.S. complicity in Israel's violence.
Thank you for your time,
Your name
#free palestine#free gaza#from the river to the sea#genocide joe#as a reminder faxzero allows you to fax your congressperson for free!#or if you google them usually you can submit an email via contact form on their website

The Exotic Animal Photo Reference Repository is live!
You can find it at: https://www.animal-photo-references.com!

Here's how this repository works: all photos were taken by me, a human, at zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, and other facilities with animals in human care. There is no AI involved in the photo editing or creation and there never will be. Right now there's 56 species on the site; my catalog has over 300 and I will be uploading the rest of them as fast as I can.
Artists creating derivative or transformative works (without AI) have blanket permission to use these references. Yes, even for work you're going to sell.
All other usage/reproduction requires permission, but assume I'm friendly and please do ask! That's educators, researchers, the media, people who need images for a school presentation, etc. This is just to retain copyright/control in case they're scraped/reused unethically - it doesn't meant I don't want folk to have access! So please do reach out via the contact form on the repository website, I don't bite and I'm most likely going to say yes.
Please don't repost the repository photos to your own blogs: I've created @animalphotorefs as a dedicated blog to share photos from the site, and of course I'll reblog a lot of it here! That again just helps with retaining copyright and sourcing of the images. If you really want to repost some for a specific purpose, please just ask me first!
Also, folks, this project has no funding. It's just me and my camera.
There will never be a paywall on the site - I believe resources like this absolutely must be free for everyone to access. So please, please, please support the repository if you use it. Want sneak peeks at photos, cute videos I take, or to help choose what I photograph and what gets posted first? You can do that through Patreon (and there's a free trial on the most interactive tier!) If you'd like to just drop a tip, I've also set up a Ko-Fi.
I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks of the repository.
To whet your thirst for cute photos, here's an Indian rhinoceros contemplating a goose.

#exotic animal photo reference repository#project launch#free art references#art references#anti AI#my photography#crowdfunding#animal photos#thank you so much to everyone who helped crowdfund one of the lenses that took so many of the newer photos on the site#aaaaa so excited

unsplash has really gone downhill...
#I'm searching for pics again to make moodboards#and man it is way more un-user-friendly#like there used to be a 'follow' tab where you can see all of the new images by users you follow#and it NO LONGER EXISTS#following people now DOES NOTHING#there's also no way to turn off being shown unsplash+ images in general#so I keep getting shown shit I CANNOT USE WITHOUT PAYING#on a WEBSITE FOR FREE IMAGES#at least you can filter unsplash+ stuff out now in search (yes that feature is fairly new)#they don't have a feedback form either! So I cannot give them any suggestions!#I hoped they would like#improve their tag system and maybe allow sub collections#to improve user experience#but they clearly don't care#only money#at least it's not overrun with AI bs like other stock photo sites

Opinion Here’s how to get free Paxlovid as many times as you need it
When the public health emergency around covid-19 ended, vaccines and treatments became commercial products, meaning companies could charge for them as they do other pharmaceuticals. Paxlovid, the highly effective antiviral pill that can prevent covid from becoming severe, now has a list price of nearly $1,400 for a five-day treatment course.
Thanks to an innovative agreement between the Biden administration and the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, Americans can still access the medication free or at very low cost through a program called Paxcess. The problem is that too few people — including pharmacists — are aware of it.
I learned of Paxcess only after readers wrote that pharmacies were charging them hundreds of dollars — or even the full list price — to fill their Paxlovid prescription. This shouldn’t be happening. A representative from Pfizer, which runs the program, explained to me that patients on Medicare and Medicaid or who are uninsured should get free Paxlovid. They need to sign up by going to paxlovid.iassist.com or by calling 877-219-7225. “We wanted to make enrollment as easy and as quick as possible,” the representative said.
Indeed, the process is straightforward. I clicked through the web form myself, and there are only three sets of information required. Patients first enter their name, date of birth and address. They then input their prescriber’s name and address and select their insurance type.
All this should take less than five minutes and can be done at home or at the pharmacy. A physician or pharmacist can fill it out on behalf of the patient, too. Importantly, this form does not ask for medical history, proof of a positive coronavirus test, income verification, citizenship status or other potentially sensitive and time-consuming information.
But there is one key requirement people need to be aware of: Patients must have a prescription for Paxlovid to start the enrollment process. It is not possible to pre-enroll. (Though, in a sense, people on Medicare or Medicaid are already pre-enrolled.)
Once the questionnaire is complete, the website generates a voucher within seconds. People can print it or email it themselves, and then they can exchange it for a free course of Paxlovid at most pharmacies.
Pfizer’s representative tells me that more than 57,000 pharmacies are contracted to participate in this program, including major chain drugstores such as CVS and Walgreens and large retail chains such as Walmart, Kroger and Costco. For those unable to go in person, a mail-order option is available, too.
The program works a little differently for patients with commercial insurance. Some insurance plans already cover Paxlovid without a co-pay. Anyone who is told there will be a charge should sign up for Paxcess, which would further bring down their co-pay and might even cover the entire cost.
Several readers have attested that Paxcess’s process was fast and seamless. I was also glad to learn that there is basically no limit to the number of times someone could use it. A person who contracts the coronavirus three times in a year could access Paxlovid free or at low cost each time.
Unfortunately, readers informed me of one major glitch: Though the Paxcess voucher is honored when presented, some pharmacies are not offering the program proactively. As a result, many patients are still being charged high co-pays even if they could have gotten the medication at no cost.
This is incredibly frustrating. However, after interviewing multiple people involved in the process, including representatives of major pharmacy chains and Biden administration officials, I believe everyone is sincere in trying to make things right. As we saw in the early days of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, it’s hard to get a new program off the ground. Policies that look good on paper run into multiple barriers during implementation.
Those involved are actively identifying and addressing these problems. For instance, a Walgreens representative explained to me that in addition to educating pharmacists and pharmacy techs about the program, the company learned it also had to make system changes to account for a different workflow. Normally, when pharmacists process a prescription, they inform patients of the co-pay and dispense the medication. But with Paxlovid, the system needs to stop them if there is a co-pay, so they can prompt patients to sign up for Paxcess.
Here is where patients and consumers must take a proactive role. That might not feel fair; after all, if someone is ill, people expect that the system will work to help them. But that’s not our reality. While pharmacies work to fix their system glitches, patients need to be their own best advocates. That means signing up for Paxcess as soon as they receive a Paxlovid prescription and helping spread the word so that others can get the antiviral at little or no cost, too.

libre office my fucking beloved
#free and VERY in depth writing spreadsheet slideshow AND MORE program#i am currently reading. a veritable book on libre office. in an attempt to figure out how Database works#i don't even entirely know what it is or what its used for#and some of the other websites i saw literally like. defined some of the words using other undefined words#and then defined those undefined words. using the word they just defined with it. so it's a loop of undefinition#basic rule as any sort of teacher: make sure you're defining shit using words the learner already knows Please#if you're telling me the basics of files vs forms vs tables you can't define them using each other i need to know what it Is first

Honestly, I am pretty frustrated by the "haha why would anyone hate ace people" responses to Rowling's tweet.
Don't get me wrong, the support is nice. But if you want to be an ally, you have to do so on our terms, not yours. And that means actually engaging with the aspec community, not just posting positivity every now and again. And what those responses highlight to me is what I've known for a while; you guys only support aspec people when it's easy and convenient.
It's easy to support aspec people when it's J.K. Rowling being awful again. It's easy to support us when it's just reblogging an "aspec people are queer" post.
But what about when we are talking about amatonormativity and the relationship hierarchy? When we are discussing the enforcement of compulsory sexuality? When we are pushing for greater awareness and support for aspec identities that are not asexuality or aromanticism? When we are criticizing terminology that you use but harms us? Because I can tell you right now, I rarely see allo people engage with those posts.
Why do people hate asexuality (or any other aspec identity)? Because it challenges the societal norms that benefit them. And that is uncomfortable and scary. So they turn to hate and oppression in order to assure that the changes we push by just openly existing never happen.
That means that to be a good aspec ally, you can't just make a positivity post every now and again, and you can't just laugh about how stupid aphobes are. You have to openly challenge the societal norms that harm us, even if they benefit you. Including but not limited to:
The idea that romantic and sexual attraction is the default state of being (amatonormativity)
The idea that a romantic, sexual relationship completes a person
People in marriages receiving special privileges and benefits
The idea that platonic, familial, etc. attraction are default states of being
The idea that not feeling some form of attraction must be compensated for through another form of attraction
The idea that love (not just romantic) is inherently morally good, while not feeling love is inherently a moral failing
The idea that any one form of relationship is inherently more important or deeper than any other (relationship hierarchy)
The idea that any one thing makes someone human
The idea that not having sex is shameful or infantile
The idea that having sex without romantic love is callous
Gendered divides of sexual and romantic attraction
Other aspec people please feel free to add on/challenge any of this. Allo (not aspec) people please feel free to ask questions.

The Macklemore shit is frustrating bc while it’s good he’s learned about about Palestine and is using his music to advocate for them his insertion into the Kendrick Drake beef shows he’s still not putting together how Kendrick is going after Drake for being a colonizer these struggles are inherently linked. It’s not a distraction it’s the same fight as it’s always been and now there’s a bunch of nonblack people who are getting on their high horse like “don’t you have something more important to think about?” As if a middle class Canadian trying to insert himself into lower class Black American culture while ignoring the politics inherent in said culture is a less worthy cause that doesn’t need to be addressed
#to be very clear I am white and there are plenty of black people talking about this#but it’s just so damn frustrating man#this didn’t even get into how the BLM movement and the Free Palestine movement have been intertwined since at least Ferguson#it’s just upsetting to see other white ppl on this website talk about rap for the first time and immediately all the attention and praise#has to go to another white man bc these black artists aren’t doing enough (lies)#like you do have to fight colonization in ALL its forms anyone who tells you otherwise has something to gain from that
