He doesn't know why he's here.

No, that's a lie ㅡ he does know why he's here, he just doesn't want to admit it. To himself, or to anyone else, for that matter. That he needs help.

Those fancy little bullets for his gun are hard to come by, few and far between when he can't get them by looting and places like Ma June's enjoy extorting as much as they can for so very little.

There's a difference between business transactions and highway robbery, even now. Which is why he's here ㅡ he'd gotten talk about a place that sold weapons and weapon-related supplies at a fair rate, and necessity had made him swallow his pride to go and find out for himself.

Which is why he's not just turning around and fuckin' leaving.

The building is crammed between two others, as ramshackle as the rest being made of recycled tin and wood that's rotted by time and rain in places, but still suggests a stability that won't crumble if somebody breathes too hard on it.

Cooper's spurs jingle as he walks, lost momentarily to the chime of something over his head when he pushes the door open. He looks up, forehead creasing.

Is that a bell?

Rusted but still in working order, it clatters again when he shuts the door, looking around. It's about as put together as any other kind of shop, an eclectic organization to it ㅡ a couple of rifles, a pistol or two, along with an admittedly impressive assortment of knives ㅡ but it's the shine of something on the floor that makes Cooper stop.

His head cocks as he studies the stain, the still-slick shimmer to it that makes him crouch and drag two gloved fingers against it, studying the residue. Coppery, with a hefty dose of some kind of chem to clean it, but still unmistakable ㅡ blood.

Well damn. He doesn't know what's happened here and he's pretty sure he doesn't care to, much beyond the fact that if the runner of this place is dead, that puts a damper on things. Or maybe not ㅡ if nobody's here, what's to stop him from taking what he wants?

"If you're thinkin' of stealing," comes a call that snaps his head up as it echoes from further back in the building, "I'd advise you not to. Less you wanna meet your maker, then I'd be happy to assist."

It's a flat bravado that both amuses him and piques his interest, and he leans against the counter to rap his knuckles. "Not stealin'," he drawls, "just wonderin' what kind of business model you've got if you make customers wait."

"The kind where patience is still a virtue, that's what." Foosteps, unhurried ㅡ and then Cooper is staring at you as you round the corner. You've got a jumpsuit of some indistinguishable color opened to rest around your hips, dingy tank-top underneath ㅡ and a stimpak in your hand. No doubt for the mess of your other arm, bicep wrapped with gauze that's already seeped into a bloom of bright red.

Well now. Cooper wasn't sure what he'd been expecting, but you still manage to surprise him. Enough that he's staring, which makes you scowl.

"I know that look," you challenge, "if you think I'm easy picking, you'll get a new place to breathe from, courtesy of the hole I'll put in your head."

Cooper's head cocks. "Well now sugar," he says, "that's not very nice now, is it? Wasn't even thinkin' of that." He turns, jerks a thumb at the half-assed cleaning of the mess on the floor. "That's your doin', I reckon."

You nod. "Don't get trouble much," you say, "but when I do, I make sure to prove a point." You jam the stimpak into your arm, and he watches the tension melt from your shoulders. "Now, what can I do for you besides point out the exit?"

Well damn, Cooper thinks again. You've got a pretty face, but it's at odds with the attitude coming from that nice little mouth of yours. About as welcoming as a rattlesnake and probably just as quick to anger, from the way you bristle as he eyes you.

"Need supplies," he says, and you snort.

"What a wellspring of information you are. What kind of supplies?" You eye him, brow furrowing. "You're a bounty hunter, aren't you? Get your kind in here all the time." You tap a worn boot against the floor, hands now on your hips. "Hope you got means to pay for shit, because I don't do tab and I sure as fuck don't do charity work."

Cooper isn't sure if he likes you or he hates you. Bit of both, he guesses. The like is tentative and the hate is more solid ground, because he hates just about everybody. Makes it easier to do what needs to be done.

"Well, sweetheart," he leans into the counter, tips his hat, "depends on what you got to show me that's worth buyin'."

You stare, unimpressed by whatever angle he's going for. He's handsome, you'll give him that ㅡ but not much else. He also reminds you of somebody, with that hat of his and the way he talks ㅡ the low, drawn out drawl that you've only seen in those movies you manage to scrounge up here and there for your amusement.

Rolling your eyes, you hold up a finger and shrug your arms back into the jumpsuit, though you don't bother to zip it up. "Gimme a sec."

You don't know why you're doing this. Entertaining the notion that if you show him good enough product, he'll become a regular. You like regulars, but most of what you get seem to run on about six months worth of visits and then vanish.

Probably dead. Such is the way of the world, and it's still enough to get by. But you like new faces.

To his credit, he doesn't flinch when you slap the first pack onto the counter, followed by a second, and then a third.

"This is baseline stuff," you explain. "Your usual grade of bullet. Black powder, the standard kick." You shove the first pack at him, let him inspect the bullets. "Then you've got these."

The second pack shoved over, thin fabric parted so he can eye the neat little row of what would be hollow-point bullets if they didn't end with a tiny, pointed bulb of red glass.

"Explosive rounds." Your expression is unreadable. "They do the job, but they need special packing. Unless you wanna be blown up before the damn things even get loaded into the gun."

Cooper hums, eyes the bullet he holds up, the barely there shift of powder in the glass. He watches as you push the third over. "And these?"

"Same, but they pack even more of a punch. I'd recommend only shooting them at shit you want up in smoke." You shrug. "Or people, deathclaws, whatever the fuck you do out there."

Cooper studies you. "Where did you get this stuff? Thought bullets were hard to come by."

You give him a flat look of annoyance. "I make 'em myself."

Cooper stares, then smirks. Another little tip to his head. "Really now," he says, watches you bristle like a viper, ready to strike. Wonders if those fangs of yours pack a punch, what he'd need to do to get you to spit at him. "How 'bout you show me, darlin'? Wanna make sure what I buy is good quality."

You should tell him to shove it. Tell him to get the absolute fuck out of your shop, take his fuckin' yeehaw personality to someone else in the mood to deal with it ㅡ but you don't.

Instead, you sigh and tug the packages back, moving away from the counter. "Well c'mon then," you prompt, irritated. "Don't have all goddamn day."

The back of your shop is half a home and half a workshop, sprawled mess of equipment rusted with time but otherwise well maintained, smell of grease and hot metal and gunpowder that clings to everything.

You don't have to look back to know he's followed you, the jingle of his spurs as he takes his time, eyes missing nothing. The boxes of empty casings and empty glass bulbs ㅡ and the Mister Handy that's slumped in the corner, sparks spitting from it.

"Poor thing got shot first with that...situation earlier." Your voice is quiet. "Gotta fix 'im if I can."

Kind of funny, you sound sadder about the damn machine than the fact you'd killed someone over it. Then again, they'd been trying to kill you, so...eh. Justified, in your book.

The rest of the room is a haphazard attempt at something like a house ㅡ a couch with blankets on it, a short stack of books gone yellow at the edges, a coffee table ㅡ and sitting on it is a shitty little television, staticy and without color ㅡ but that doesn't matter. What matters to Cooper is that he knows what it's playing.

Your flitting around fades a little as he watches himself on screen ㅡ forever ago, a lifetime ago. Before the bombs, before vault-tec ㅡ when he'd been happy.

He'd loved his life, his family ㅡ and they'd loved him too.

"I've got enough stuff to make another round of flash-baㅡ" You stop, blinking at the way he's staring at the television. "Somethin' wrong? I know this isn't much, but it's my way of living, soㅡ"

"Stop your yappin'," Cooper rasps, and you glare as he shakes himself out of whatever reverie he was lost in. You scowl.

"Look, I know this doesn't seem like much of anything, but this is my business, and my shop." Your eyes narrow. "So try to be a little fuckin' nicer if you want me to sell you anything."

Whatever patience he'd had left promptly snaps like a bowstring as he snatches your arm, grips it tighter than he should. "Listen, sweetheart," he hisses, "what exactly is stopping me from just takin' what I want and leaving?"

Something whirrs behind him, distracts him just enough for the cool, sharp kiss of metal at his throat.

"Do it," you taunt, expression unreadable, grip tight on the blade you hold to his neck. "You're not the first one to try, and you won't be the last."

And there, Cooper notes, are your fangs, ready to sink into his skin. The two of you stare at each other for a good, long minute while the Mister Handy spits and sputters. And then Cooper huffs something like a laugh. "Glad to see you've got some bite to you, darlin', but I still think I could handle you."

A threat and something a little less hostile all in one, even as you yank your arm out of his grasp. "You couldn't handle me even if I came with a fuckin' manual," you snap back, but there's a playful gleam to your eyes. "You gonna buy anything or just lookin' to be a pain in my ass?"

A crooked grin tugs at Cooper's mouth. "Both."

The truce between the two of you is tentative. An understanding in the barest sense, because neither of you are dumb enough to pass up a lucrative, beneficial deal. He gets his supplies, you get caps. Simple.

You won't go as far as to say you're even friends, up until the point that you greet him on a visit with, "You know, you remind me of somebody."

He eyes you. "Really now. And who would that be, sweetheart? You workin' with more ghouls than just me?"

You snort. "Careful," you tease, "you almost sound jealous." Your tone quiets as you drum your fingers on the counter. "Nah, you remind me of that one actor, Cooper Howard."

Cooper stills. Watches you warily, turning a spent bullet casing over and over between gloved fingers.

"He played a cowboy," you say, nodding to yourself. "Talked like you do, too. Good movies, at least the ones I've gotten my hands on." You eye him, playful light to your eyes. "Wouldn't happen to be a fan of him too, would you?"

Cooper debates. He's not sure if you've put the pieces together and if you have, you're polite enough not to say it. He appreciates that, makes that fleeting temptation of putting a bullet in your head all the more temporary. He likes you. Be a shame if he had to cut ties.

"No," he answers. "I can safely say he and I are nothin' alike." Not anymore. He lets himself lean over the counter, too close to your face. Intimidation, maybe, or perhaps just because he likes being able to look at you like this. "Got anythin' else to tell me?"

Your eyes flick over his face, down to his lips as you lean a little closer, the suggestion of your mouth just shy of his. "Yeah," you murmur, quiet. "Next time you come by, work on your fuckin' manners."

Okay I know I was just here with III but I just got absolutely sledgehammered by the Arc-V ending (WTF) (Shun deserved better) so uh. Thoughts on Shun Kurosaki?

Why I like them/why I don’t: BIRD AUTISM IS SO COOOOOL I love that he's just so absurdly serious in a frequently deeply goofy yugioh, like GIVEN HIS SITUATION IT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE but it's still so funny. guy who takes it up to an 11 when most situations really need maybe only a 5. his dub voice rules also he's got the zane thing where he's either muttering angrily or SCREAMING and i always love that sort of vocal performance hehehe. also lbr raidraptors are just so fucking cool. just a guy and his 3892893435 bigger and bigger birds that are guns. i also need to be real shay is one of those yugioh characters where i decided they were a butch lesbian in my brain and my enjoyment of them just shot right through the roof. transfem shay youre so real to me. thumbs up

What I like about their appearance: AGAIN ARC V CHARACTER COLOR PALETTES JUST RULE SO HARD the different shades of teal in his hair, the pop of red in his bandana, that deep indigo of his trench coat...it's such a good palette he has a very striking design.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names? i incline towards shay more but shun has grown on me more over tim... im starting to do the ryozane thing where i just jam both names together sometimes lol.... i think i like obsidian as a surname more than kurosaki though

OTP: im an aro lesbian shayshun truther and i dont really have any ships for him im like frothing TOO too much at the mouth about...i do like the idea of crow/shay especially as a butch birder4butch birder thing though

NOTP: shay/dennis is like..... man i Like a good enemies to lovers but this one doesnt feel great to me. the optics on 'guy who lost everything in a horrific war crime' x 'guy who gave the ok for that war crime to happen' are kind of. not great. not my favorite. idk. also thats a dyke and a gay man to me but ANYWAY

Favourite moment they were in: yeah on that note it's the shay/dennis friendship cup duel. he fucking blew that twink up with his giant space falcon and also the entire stadium too and he probably would have beat dennis to death with his bare hands if he didnt get stopped. and it KICKED ASS.

Least favourite moment: LITERALLY THOUGH LIKE. WHY DID THEY DO THAT TO SHUN IN THE LAST LIKE 4 EPISODES OF THE SERIES...... why did they make him just effectively lie down and take that absolute dogshit hand they dealt him for no fucking reason. his best friend and his sister are effectively dead. but la la la yuya beat him so it's fine :^) WHY COULDNT HE HAVE DUELED YUTO...HE WAS THERE.. Ooh, fun! Ok, here goes:

one shot or multi-chapter? I love both in different contexts, but I think I love multichaps more as both a writer and reader. Well, I don't like how long they take me to write them, but I like the outcome a lot! 😂

angst or fluff? Angst, but only preceeding a happy ending. I'm not much for pure fluff fics although sometimes they are delightful.

coffee shop au or flower shop au? Gonna go flower shop because I just love flowers and I love the inherent romance when you're dealing with that setup.

office au or sports au? OMG sports AU all the way, I love them so much. I hate watching sports most of the time (except the olympics), but I LOVE every kind of sports AU. I think it's the rivals to lovers that's usually inherent in them.

enemies to lovers or childhood friends to lovers? This is another one that's easy for me, enemies to lovers all day, every day. This is my JAM as a reader and writer. I don't usually read childhood friends to lovers fics at all, actually!

Ok so, I'm not picky at all when it comes to tropes and fun things to write and read, so expect most of these to be in the positive range. Also, slight disclaimer, no one's gonna like the same things. What I'm obsessed with may not work for others and that's OK!

Rules: How much do these tropes affect your decision to click on a fic?

-10 -> very dissuaded

0 - don't care either way

+10 -> very enticed

nope -> if it's a hard no and you'd never click on a fic with that tag or or you even have the tag blocked or you'd insta click out of the fic if it wasn't tagged

Bonus points for explaining the rating and whether it's conditional.

Age gap: +3

So I'm usually not a fan of large age gaps. I find them rather squicky irl, and I'm not very keen on clicking fics that contain them. That being said, if I happen to read a summary that sounds interesting to me, or if the fic is by a writer I enjoy, I'll most likely read it.

I will most likely not write anything involving age gap though, unless a friend asks me to.

Codependency: +5

I like fics that start out this way. Where the two people cannot function without the other. However, if this leads to them finding independence WHILE still needing the person in their life, yesssssss! Having a character learning to be happy on their own and on their own terms is the good shit for me.

That being said, both Dreamling and SnowBaz have some of the most co-dependant fuckers I've seen. They're so much fun to write though. :D

Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: +5

This depends on the level of intensity, and whether it becomes toxic or not. I will not read a fic that involves the main pairing being abusive towards each other. If it becomes dark towards each other, I'm clicking out. That being said, the "No one gets to touch you, but me" or "No one gets to have dirty thoughts of you" shit is so fucking GOOD.

Both Dreamling and SnowBaz have this shit and I eat it up every single time.

And yes, I will GLADLY write this. No questions asked.

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): +10

Oh yesssss!!!! Love love love this trope! It's so much fun to read how different authors decide to tackle this. Will the dark one find reasons to be sunshiny? Will the sunshiny one learn how to cope with darkness as it comes and goes? How does their dynamic work? How do they deal with other people? So many possibilities! Love it!

Enemies to lovers, Enemies with benefits: +50

Hi, hello! This is my JAM. I think every major fandom I've been a part of had some sort of pairing like this, and each one was handled with perfection. Though Dreamling is less Enemies to Lovers, and more Acquaintances to Friends to HOPEFULLY LOVERS.

However, I also live in the Carry On fandom, and my fam from there will tell you that Simon and Baz are perfect Enemies to Lovers! It's just such a fun trope to see tow people going from absolutely HATING each other, to being madly in love.

They DO say that there is a fine line between love and hate.

Friends with benefits: +5

This can be a REALLY fun trope to play around with. I haven't read many fics where they strictly stay as fuck buddies. Normally, they always progress to being in a relationship after developing FEELINGS. I would like to read a fic where they stay strictly platonic, and are happy staying as fuck buddies. Or maybe one ends up in a relationship and it's just... fine.

Sex to feelings: +5

See, this is what the FWB usually ends up becoming. So I'm marking it the same as the FWB. All of the FWB fics I've read eventually end up becoming this. Same with the Enemies with Benefits. Almost always, it ends up with one or both the characters developing feelings.

And I'm pretty happy with that, but it's gotta have a good plot attached to it as well.

Fake dating/relationship: +8

Ohhhh yes! I love a good fake dating story. The underlying angst over one loving the other (because it ALWAYS happens) coupled with the fear of being Found Out is so perfect.

Then you have the moment when Everything Is Revealed, and so you get more angst and pining until the eventual resolution.

Friends to lovers: +50

The amount of love I feel for the Enemies to Lovers is equal to the love I feel for Friends to Lovers. Enemies to Lovers is hot and heavy and good for writing those intense feelings growing into something positive. With Friends to Lovers, it's a bit of a slower burn, but nice because your characters already have a good relationship. But oh no... one wants something different. What if their friend doesn't feel the same? What if it ruins everything?

Dreamling fandom has done this SO WELL.

Found Family: +5

YESSSSSSS! Ok look, if it's the only trope in the fic, then I'll probably skip it, unless it's got a really compelling plot attached to it. I am such a sucker for found family though. Where you have a rag tag group of outcasts and misfits who find comfort and love amongst each other... Yes, give me all of that.

Hurt/Comfort: +10000000000000000000

THIS IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE TROPE! BAR NONE! END OF STORY!

The fucking AAAAAAANGST with one partner being hurt and the stress with wondering if they'll be ok and be reunited with their partner.

Then the soothing balm that comfort provides... Ughhhhh yes. Give me that shit NOW.

Let it known, that I will ONLY read a hurt/whump fic, if there is AMPLE comfort as well. Beat up your characters, but give them hugs and tea and bandaids after.

Love Triangle: -10

I am NOT a big fan of love triangles. Ok well... that depends. If it's an ACTUAL love triangle, where all three people have feelings for each other, I can get onboard. I have recently found that I really like reading poly fics.

However, if it's the type of bullshit where one person has two people fighting over them... it's a no for me. I'm not a fan of Love Angles (because that's what they are).

Poly, open relationships: +8

You know. I never really thought I'd end up liking poly ships as much as I do. It started when I got into AtLA, and saw a really well-written Zuko/Sokka/Suki fic. The writer just really convinced me that they all genuinely loved each other.

I guess it comes down to how well the author can convince me that they all have feelings for each other and are in a respectful relationship.

Convince me that no one is being mistreated and I'm down for reading your poly/open fic. :)

Mistaken/hidden identity: +1

I'm very meh with this trope. I don't know, it doesn't interest me as much as other tropes do. I mean, if you've got a good spy fic where one has to hide who they are on fear of death, I can vibe with that. If the stakes are raised, I can get on board with it. :)

Monsterfucking: +50

I'm not a fan of writing out the whole process of pregnancy, because frankly it terrifies me. But I do love the idea of unexpected pregnancy and kid-fics. They can be a lot of fun :)

Second Chance: +10

I am currently writing a medical second chance fic. And I am having so much fun writing it. I love second chance fics. Sometimes, people who are supposed to be together aren't together at the right time. Sometimes people need to grow before they're ready to be together.

The slow coming back to feelings after time is so sweet to read. Are the feelings still there after time has passed? Is it too late for us? Did we miss our shot? Is it worth jumping into love at this time?

Slowburn: +10000000000

Yesssssssssssss! Drag that shit out. Have the relationship develop slowwwwwwwwlyyyyyyyyy. Give me missed opportunities, and interrupted kisses. Give me pining and second thoughts, and uncertainty. Give me months of going back and forth.

Soulmates: +10

Soulmates are so fucking fun! And I have read so many good soulmate fics (heck, I even WROTE one). There are so many different ways you can portray two people being soulmates. And I'm not just talking about the way it presents, but also the type of soulmate. The fic I wrote had platonic soulmates. Soulmates who are connected and love each other but it isn't romantic. They're just each other's Person.

I would love to see this concept explored more (the fic I wrote had them as background characters), as well as other types of soulmates. Can you have familial soulmates? Sexual soulmates? Purely romantic soulmates? Friendly soulmates? Multiple soulmates? There are so many ways to play with this trope!

1) The last book I read:

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros - I absolutely devoured this sequel, omg. Obviously it’s nothing fancy or anything like that but hey what’s wrong with a smutty YA? Not to mention DRAGONS

2) A book I recommend:

Perfume by Patrick Süskind - when I read it I had no idea it was a whole entire modern classic, I just picked it up at Oxfam for like 3 for £1 or something but, wow, I can 100% understand how it earned that status! If you like an eery not-too-long horror story with the most beautiful imagery describing some fucked up gothic storylines and a lot of social commentary, you’ll love this book!

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

Ahhh ok, im gonna say In Memoriam by Alice Winn. The ending was… idk I wasn’t really a fan of the ending, I thought it kind of disengaged and took away from the struggles and severity of war and sexuality the rest of the book portrayed but until that point the rest of the story was everythingggg, there’s a sweet forbidden romance/coming of age/found family in the 1910’s propelling into a story of the horror of WW1 and losing everything you know. All I can really say is that I read it all in one go (more or less) and it had me laughing and sobbing throughout

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

I mean… there’s an obvious choice here - The Picture Of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. HOWEVER I’m going to absolutely cheat and also say Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, the drama, the trauma, the vast majority of these characters are awful and I love it 🤌🤌

5) A book on my TBR:

So many… so so many… I’m gonna say House Of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski tho because it was expensive and it’s cool looking and I’ve actually been meaning to read that for a while but boy howdy it’s huge

6) A book I’ve put down:

The Tale Of The Body Thief by Anne Rice UGHH I’m trying so hard!! It’s so many words with so little going on, and I do enjoy it, I really do, it’s so goofy, but it’s so.. i mean verbose isn’t really quite the right word but you know what I mean. Sorry mutuals :( I just need a break to read something short and silly - which I’ve almost finished the little series I’m currently reading

Omg 10000x the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy, guys you don’t understand, as much as I would love to talk about how my mum and I used to sit and read Anne Of Green Gables before bed or my Enid Blyton obsession when I was like 6, Skulduggery Pleasant was my absolute jam - I must’ve read that series (the original 9 + spin offs) a million times in primary school. I did keep up with phase 2 when that was coming out but I don’t know if I’ll bother with phase 3, I’m just too old now and phase 2 wasn’t all that imo - I think it’s sort of beating a dead horse at this point :( but the original 9 and Maleficent Seven/Armageddon Outta Here were my childhood and I definitely absorbed Valkyrie Cain into my identity as a child so that series probably shaped a big part of who I am and my hobbies as an adult

Love On The Brain by Ali Hazelwood. Silly, nerdy, fun, a cute little Pride and Prejudice-esque enemies to lovers feat. women in STEM

10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own:

Ok so anyone who’s seen my other poetry blog @apoemadaykeepsthehoesaway knows my obsession with The Complete Poems of Wilfred Owen (I have a lot of difference versions) AHHH by far my favourite poet - as you can imagine with such a young man, you can clearly see his changing mentalities, his growth as a person and a writer, his influences, and really gather a lot of context for what’s going on with him in general through his poems. And he grew up in all the same areas I grew up in and hung around as a kid/younger teen, which I think adds to my personal interest in him too. Idk ig we’re very close friends on a parasocial level lol.

And ofc there really aren’t that many poets around that give such visceral, truthful, and emotional insights to the First World War as Owen does (also a queer icon). He was my intro to war literature and I have tattoos relating to him, he and his work are just incredible to read about, would highly recommend having a look at Siegfried Sassoon’s war poems too; another very blunt poet who was a celebrity and war protestor at the time and happened to mentor Wilfred Owen, as well as being linked with other influential folks of the time such as Robbie Ross, Stephen Tennant, Rupert Brooke, and Ivor Novello. Ok Ill move on :,)

11) A nonfiction book you own:

Surprisingly I quite like nonfiction, mainly history and essays from philosophers and the like. Speaking of, Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good And Evil is a pretty solid one I own, I’ve never read anything where the author begins by calling himself and all his coworkers socially inept incels 🥹 but even though I don’t remember the specific reason I bought it (I was reading it to argue against some other philosophers in an essay in college and I really don’t remember who or what it was) I remember it being a really interesting read

Or yknow in a more traditional sense of non-fiction, I also have Notes On A Nervous Planet by Matt Haig. Really helped me get through some stuff, if you’re struggling with anxiety or feeling a bit down lately I’d very much recommend

12) What are you currently reading:

Omg ok, The Hitchhiker Trilogy by Douglas Adams, I’m currently on book 3 of 5 - Life, The Universe, And Everything. Really silly and nonsensical space bs but somehow also a bleakly satirical social commentary on the unseriousness of our ‘serious’ world. Really enjoyable, fairly political to some degree, really short (around or less than 200 pages a book), really fun. Martin Freeman truly was the perfect casting for Arthur Dent in the film of the first book. Full of that quintessentially British cynical humour and of course plenty of cups of tea

To give a little preview, the second book literally opens “The story so far: In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

13) What are you planning on reading next?

Books 4 and 5 of The Hitchhiker Trilogy, and then I suppose I had better carry on reading The Tale Of The Body Thief :D

4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

omg YES. i recently finished "our wives under the sea" by julia armfield and a) never annotated a book so heavily and b) never followed an author on social media to stay updated about their next book. she's such an unbelievably incredible writer and i am SAT for private rites.

5. Any books that disappointed you?

ok i maybe cant say disappointed hsdjfjdsf but i dabbled into elle kennedy after seeing her everywhere and. u know what. i am more than fine if i never read an elle kennedy book again. (having said that i did give the deal 2.5 stars SDFJD listen did i read the whole thing in 1 sitting. yes. did i feel necessarily good about it. no not really)

16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?

oh my god the spanish love deception. im so sorry because i know there are people who ride for this book but i actually hated it with everything in me. i had to dnf it because every time i read it i'd get angry. my sister has a 2 minute video of me lying in bed complaining about it. i wanted so badly to like this book but it pissed me off to no end im so sorry elena armas. however i do realise that i think contemporary workplace enemies-to-lovers is not necessarily my jam so hopefully if i avoid that trope i should avoid such passion

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

yes, conversations with friends by sally rooney!! i know sally rooney is a bit of a divisive marmitey author, but cwf was my first sally rooney novel and i genuinely adored it. i love her writing voice, i loved all the characters and i thought it was just such a beautiful novel. normal people is now very high up on my tbr

4. Do you bake/cook any special meals for the holidays? I'm so sorry about your neighbour, that is a truly kind gesture! Yeah, for me it's gingerbread and cranberry sorbet which takes a full day to make, ummm potatoes au gratin, and this year is beef of some kind for the central dish. I did want to make a yule log but I always get shot down because it's "too much work!" haha!

One of the reasons I’m so salty about c/a is that this romance should be my jam.

Like, I like enemies-to-lovers. I’ve read Gideon the Ninth twice. The Thrawn trilogy, countless times over the last twenty years. Batman and Catwoman are always fun to watch. I enjoy, even if I’m critical of, Beast Wars’s handling of Silverbolt/Blackarachnia. I’ve written it before, and I have enemies-to-lovers romances planned for at least two creative projects for the distant, far-off day I have the energy to actually write fanfiction again.

I also fucking love kids’ shows to have LGBT characters. I still want explicit ace/aro rep, that’s a thing I’m kind of salty is never acknowledged onscreen, but I own most of Steven Universe on DVD, and all of Legend of Korra (for all that it literally wasn’t allowed to confirm it onscreen by the censors), I would love to get more of OK KO, I haven’t gotten around to all of Kipo yet but I do applaud Troyson, I bounced off Adventure Time’s early episodes but I endorse my friends who love Bubbline, I would watch The Owl House if it wasn’t just on Disney Plus (yeah yeah I will probably pirate it at some point), I want more Transformers to be gay on screen and not just in MTMTE etc.

On paper, “Aang and Zuko but they’re disaster lesbians” should be the kind of thing that I celebrate. That should be a slam fucking dunk for me, a mathematically impossible 69/10 score, show of the year.

But the problem is that once it gets off the paper and onto the screen the actual writing is bad. It does not try to do the engaging part of enemies-to-lovers where these two people on opposite sides learn they have something in common and bond despite the factional differences. It goes for the friends-to-enemies-to-lovers thing instead, and then fucks even that up by 1) pacing it like shit, 2) making C*tra’s enmity to Adora incredibly viciously personal and harmful, 3) putting in a flashback that portrayed that friendship as toxic and one-sided and then never having any of that pay off, and 4) crapping out a rushed, unconvincing and bland redemption arc that feels like a first draft they never got around to adjusting in light of any writing decisions in the first four seasons.

I’m still salty about this romance because it takes two things that I would normally like and just does them like complete shit in ways that it’s very hard to actually miss, and then everyone just kind of...desperately tried not to see those ways because there’s a gay kiss at the end, paying off a romance that is compelling if you ignore every single mind-blowingly terrible creative decision made in and around it.

You take in a deep breath as you stare at your reflection, brushing through your hair with your fingers.

It's a new year.

This time it'll be different.

As you step back into the main bedroom it almost feels like a memory. You had spent the past two years at Beauxbaton for a program curated for you. You left Hogwarts without telling anybody, even your best friends Fred and George out of spite.

Today was the first day of classes and you had been able to steer clear of the twins so far. You weren't sure if you were quite ready to face the twins. You still weren't sure how you managed to be completely invisible for a week. Though, it probably had to do with not attending the Great Feast and arriving late.

You grab your books and take a bite of the jam and toast you stole from the kitchens at midnight. Quickly, you run out of your dorm to get to your first class.

You're part of the first handful of kids in class and you decide sit somewhere near the middle. Not too close to the front nor back.

Suddenly the thought of the twins recognizing you crosses your mind.

It was quite true. At Beauxbaton you let go of yourself and changed up your appearance. It was just small things, nothing grave. It was things like hair color, and learning how to do your eyelashes properly that made all the difference.

"Y/N Y/L/N?" Professor McGonagall calls for your name as checks the attendance. She then looks at you with a welcoming look. "Glad to see that you're back."

As soon as your name is called you could almost feel the mountains of whispers arise from around you. You shake it off and try your best to focus on the lesson.

"Y/N?" A terribly familiar voice asks as you're about to leave McGonagall's class.

You turn around taking a deep breath to prepare yourself, "Fred?"

You take a gulp as you face Fred, who towers over you. He remains just as attractive as he was when you left, which you curse over. His eyes are wide and his lips part ever so slightly.

"It's really you?"

"The one and only," you grin though a shaky laugh.

Without any hesitance Fred gives you a tight hug, "I didn't think you'd ever come back! You just left one day and we never saw you again!"

"Yeah..." you muster through a smile, remembering part of the reason you left. "So how are you? How's the lucky girl?"

"Girl?" Fred's brow furrows as the hug pulls apart. "You mean Angelina? We broke up...we broke up last summer." He bites his cheek and you realize that it's a touchy subject.

"Oh," you say without thinking, blinking your eyes in shock. Your eyes widen at what just came out of your mouth and your cheeks heat up with embarrassment. Before Fred gets a chance to intervene you pace away, nervously playing with the ends of your hair.

"Why'd you leave?" Fred asks as he sits on the floor of his dorm working on his next prank object and you beside him helping him organize.

"Leave?"

"For France."

You'd been at Hogwarts for so long you'd almost forgotten you'd left at all. You'd told your parents you wanted new academic experiences, but deep down that wasn't the real reason at all.

The truth was you loved Fred, which is a stupid reason to leave a school. But you couldn't stand the way he looked at Angelina and how he talked of her. And once a fight broke out and he began getting his revenge on you, you gave up and left.

"The reason is, well, it's dumb, but," you sigh, turning to look at Fred who's entirely focused on his project. "But I left because...I loved you." You pause as you face the truth, saying it out loud. "I loved you and I was jealous at Angelina. And when we began to fight, I couldn't handle it."

Fred looks up from his tinkering and into your eyes. You bite the inside of your lip unsure of what he thinks of. The expression he was showing is one you can't read.

"Do you still?" He asks in almost a whisper.

"I-" Your heart stops for a second, did you? Even though you kept yourself away from him for two years, you did. You did still love him. "I do."

Without any hesitance, Fred leans in and caresses your cheek, pulling you in for a kiss. For a second you sit frozen in your spot, but when you register what's happening you give in.

When the kiss breaks Fred studies your eyes before he leans in for another. This time you accidentally whimper his name and we he pulls away the looks of mischief in his eyes is unmistakable.

“I knew it” “It was so obvious on the security camera footage.”

It was a Saturday and you were doing your usual weekend routine. Watching murder documentaries, while eating an unhealthy amount of food, and yelling at the tv about how dumb the investigators were being.

<Bump> <Dum> <Dump> [Crash and bangs coming from the empty apartment next door]

“What is that”

Getting up from the couch, you walk over to your room that has a shared wall with your neighbor. You put your ear against the wall, and you hear footsteps and people talking.

“I didn’t know that was apartment was rented out”

A few hours later, you heard a knock on your door.

“Hi I just moved in next door, my name’s Seonghwa. I just came came here to bring you this, as a friendship invitation.”

He said extending his hand to give you a tin of cookies.

“Thank you, my names Y/N, and shouldn’t I be the one giving you a gift.”

“No it’s fine, I, I just wanted to be on good terms with my neighbor.” he said with a pleasant smile.

“Well I hope we can be on more than just good terms.” You stated in a seemingly flirtatious tone.

As you tiredly jammed your key into the lock. You heard shuffling behind you. You turned around to see Seonghwa speed walking down the hallway.

“Oh Hi Seonghwa,” you said smiling and waving

“Oh uh hi,” he responded nervously

You looked down and saw him carrying a strange-looking bag.

“Um what's that,” you said a little creeped out

“It's it's nothing. Uh, I have to go, see you later,” he said and rushed off.

“Something about this is unusual,” you thought to yourself.

So you did the next logical step and followed him.

“Ugh,” he expressed panting while throwing the bag in the dumpster

“Whatever it was it was heavy,” you thought to yourself, standing beside a wall of the building.

You were so lost in your thoughts you didn't even realize he was walking straight towards you.

“What are doing,” he said in a serious manner.

“Uh i was, I was just taking a walk” you said nervously

“You were just taking a walk at night all alone, behind the building, by a dumpster,” he stated, obviously suspicious of you.

“Yup”

He narrowed his eyes at you.

“Ok, be safe and don't stay out too late. Who knows how many creeps are lurking around.” he said in an almost threatening? tone

Hii Summer! I know you've read The Cruel Prince series but I wanted to ask what your viewpoint was on Cardan and Jude's relationship? I haven't read/finished book 1 yet, but lot's of people call their relationship toxic and I can see why based on their arguments, but I wanted to ask if you thought differently lol

yes, their relationship is, arguably, toxic. They hate each other from the beginning, and the power imbalance is insane in the first book. First with Cardan publicly/privately humiliating her and using her pain as his and his friends' amusement, then her keeping him captive, and of course their first kiss with her holding the knife to his throat and kissing without consent, followed by the spoilering events that come after and the future power dynamics. Consent is not really a rule in Faerie, but it's still iffy.

HOWEVER. this IS enemies to lovers, and any form of that will be toxic in some way. Also, they were not raised with the same rules of the human world and society, and social shit is very different in Faeire. Also, I'm a fucking slut for knifepoint kisses.

Their eventual relationship is wayyyy healthier, too. Clearly it's not while they, ya know, hate each other. And then there are the residual effects of the years of hating each other, with Jude insecure and Cardan struggling to learn to use his scabby, black heart that belongs entirely to her.. .

So, in essence: Jurdan began toxic, but they're almost maybe healthy by the end of the last book, especially so in How The King of Elfhame Learned To Hate Stories, which I also highly recommend it's amazing.

Here’s my top ten list of Botw ships because I was inspired by recent events

10) Sooga x Kohga 6/10

some gay little ninjas just vibing with some potassium fruit. need I say more? you’ve SEEN hwaoc right? There is no way they’re not gay, it’s just an impossibility. Sooga basically carries Kohga like a bride. they’re getting married, and instead of flower petals it’ll be banana peels 

9) Sidlink 6/10

Tall happy shark boi, tiny gremlin, one of the best dynamics. honestly I think I prefer them platonic, but it’s still a very good ship. Perfect for your fluff AND angst needs.

8) Tebasaki 10/10

fucking SUE me I love a loving husband and his wife just being normal and hanging out with their child ok call it basic or whatever but god fucking dammit I love them so much ok. Tebaharth is valid but nothing can replace the family sized hole in my heart except Tebasaki. I still hate that Nintendo named them after fried chicken, but at least they’re really cute together. Also TULIN 

7) Miphlink 7/10

sof fish girl pining after handsome knight....friends to strangers to friends to lovers.......or even friends to best friends to lovers....or you could chuck the sweet romance build up completely in the angst bin and just kill one or both of them off. Mipha being a ghost but still healing Link and keeping him in the world of the living....god so much narrative potential, there’s much to do in the Miphlink world!

6) Urbosa x Queen 8/10

Let’s go lesbians let’s go. Urbosa literally says in her diary “I do not worship the goddess, I worship her” like BOI HELLO GAYSSS that is the gayest fucking thing I have ever seen. Also Zelda with two lesbian moms yes please, fuck king Rhoam. 

5) Zelpha 7/10

MORE lesbians, because I said so. Well actually I see Zelda as pan, and Mipha bi, but long story short, girls. Mipha being supportive of her science gf, Zelda taking care of  Mipha and helping her as they both grow as princesses....There’s a lot to foil with them, and thus a lot that they can learn from each other and grow as BATTLE WIVES because Mipha teaches Zelda how to kick ass change my mind

4) Zelink 8/10

shut the FUCK up, it’s not basic. it kinda is, but shut up still. I love them. Yes they also make a great platonic relationship, but the sheer romantic tension of falling inlove with your body guard, and also the overarching story of your love lasting centuries and being the thing that saves each other and the entire world. when the world told you to worhsip and pray to a goddess, and instead you love and learn from your once hated companion and now your best friend and also learn to love yourself through that and also you both continue to save each other both physically and metaphorically time and time again fucking SHUSH it’s a popular ship for a reason and also chaotic science girl and arsonist is good

3) Miphvali 8/10

there are nice...they are cute......they are like the tebasaki of 100 years ago change my mind. They’re just NICE, it’s again with the foils and facade breakage and the tough sarcastic one softening to the cinnamon role dynamic GHHU I love them so much....Mipha’s kindness even being able to reach out to someone like Revali and then Revali helping her move on from Link and then brrrrrrr brainrot, they are so cute 

2) Astor x Rhoam 10/10

A fantastic ship. 9/10. They both fucked the queen. They both aided in the destruction of the Calamity (Rhoam kinda fucked everyone over by digging up the Guardians). They both are mean to Zelda. Astor’s a greasy twink, Rhoam is the bimbo. PErfect. they should ballroom dance

I have given many an essay on the topic, and there’s probably a few more in my drafts. I love them....enemies to lovers is my absolute jam. They’re in love. You can’t change my mind. Soulmates. For the creepypasta fandom. My name is Lee, I don't really have a nickname since its a chosen name, but petnames are a-ok. Im 17 and i go by he/they. Im also demi romantic and pansexual. He found the way you reacted to the music amusing, so he introduced himself in probably the worst way possible: sneaking up behind you and stealing one of your headphones.

You were scared shitless, putting as much space between you and him as possible.

He thought you were amusing as all hell and took it upon himself to hang out with you.

With music playing on speaker, the two of you spent hours getting to know each other.

General Dynamic:

The two of you constantly meet up at the edge of that forest at the start.

You’d show him any new songs or bands you found while away, and he’d listen while cleaning himself up.

Your time together was a well-deserved break from everything.

Ever since that first meeting, Jeff called you any variant of “bird”. Birdie, Songbird, etc.

On the off chance that Jeff brings a clean hoodie, he gives it to you to try on.

Jeff meets the rest of your system and tries to keep track of everyone without introductions. It doesn’t go very well.

On quiet nights, you both hit up a locked skatepark and he fails to show off his rusty skills.

TMI:

Jeff eventually finds out where you live and will hide in places outside of your house where he can see you through the windows.

He swears it’s to make sure no one he knew planned on killing you.

He learns a few instruments to cover your favorite songs, but he’d never admit to that.

Other notes:

I think by the time you’re at an age he’s comfortable with dating you, you’d known each other enough to form a working relationship to last years. If only he can keep you a secret…
