Does Cal consider anyone family? And what's his relation to those he does

Cal's family is not as extensive as Ed's for a couple of reasons, but let's start with his nearest and dearest: his sister Caroline. She represents the former city of Bowness that is now northwest Calgary, although I imagine she may predate that slightly having grown up on Cochrane Ranche. In the past, especially during the wars, Cal would avoid responsibility by taking transit to her place and going skating and stuff. These days she takes a more active role in the city, particularly when it comes to promoting Calgary as a can-do volunteer driven city.

If Ed has a cousin relationship with the HBC forts, Cal has a sort of brothers-in-arms relationships with NWMP forts. Fort Macleod is basically his (slightly older) twin brother...

Usually they enjoy golf or polo together but the old competitive spirit between the old divisions fires them up a little. I imagine Fort Saskatchewan has a similar relationship with these two as well.

absolutely fascinated by young dee who is criminally under-discussed so here is my dissertation on what happened in her college years (ft. dr. gainer, setting her roommate on fire, being institutionalized)/my idea for a fic that I will almost certainly never write/my way too serious take on a few throwaway dee lore lines

timeline background: we know that dee majored in psychology ('charlie got molested') and got "three fourths" of the way in (meanwhile dennis finished his psych minor.) assuming this was a four year program, I'm gonna guess that in her third year she got institutionalized and most likely had to drop out ('gun fever too: still hot'.) we also know that she had her back brace until she was twenty ('underage drinking'), so I'm guessing that means she got her back brace off in her third year.

we know that dennis fancied himself a psychologist since he was young, but I think dee did too. in particular I think she was wary and interested in her brother's psychology; she seems very aware of his psychopathy and bpd in 'making dennis reynolds a murderer' and 'psycho pete returns.' in my head she's been interested in dennis' psychology since they were kids and she saw him snapping crows necks. so instead of forcing her way into acting school, she studied psychology to better understand her brother (and also deep down, herself, who is very much the other side of the same fucked up coin.) it also meant she could tell herself she could study her characters even better when she became an actress.

i think she put in (her version of) genuine academic effort to get in, fuelled kind of by spite (remember the way she studied that thick medical book in 'hero or hate crime' or her very quick math in 'boggs: ladies reboot'). she studies books and gets cricket to quiz her and she still fails to get into penn. but frank always pitied her (i think she was his favorite of the twins-remember "let your sister into the gang", "that's my girl!", "i'm sorry the grift didn't work out, sweetie") so he shells out cash to get her in, but also to get her away from home so he has to deal with her even less.

dennis wants to do anything dee does but better and he wants to keep her close by (to watch her crash and burn, and also because he's weirdly possessive-see 'the gang broke dee' "i'm your select!"). and obviously he's barbara's favorite. so barbara gives him money to get in too. she also gets him into a frat and pays for his classes and his rent and everything he needs. dee has to live in a dumpy dorm with a female roommate.

but college presents dee a chance to moult her previous place in life where she was known as a monster (remember how insistent she was that "people can change!" in 'franks pretty woman'. I think dees always wanted to believe she can shed that feeling she's inferior, but she never has). in my head her female roommate is basically normal-has real friends of her own, mentally stable, attractive-which is exactly what dee craves. dee wants to be popular and well liked and she wants to infiltrate her roommates life, imitate her, be in the Cool group. and she places all her hopes on a friendship with the roommate but dee has never navigated real female friendships before, not with someone like her. deep down she also wishes she found what dennis found in mac, whatever it was, because ever since dennis met mac he's never been as close to her. and i do think dee is some flavor of queer. and the roommate is well liked in the way that dee admires and envies. so there is that blurriness between wanting to be her and wanting to be with her. in my head her roommate looks like the woman from dee's fantasy in 'the gang saves the day' (and they both represent that promise of escape from dee's shitty life).

dee is so desperate for the roommates approval and her love and her life that she goes insane, copying and flattering and competing with her. ever the shitty actress, she tries to emulate her, but comes off as manic and creepy. and maybe her roommate is nice enough to not completely shun her, recognizing that she's struggling. maybe in dees mind they actually are becoming friends when her roommate asks things like "are you okay?"

and dee has to talk about her plan with dennis because he's the only person who would Get It. and she makes it sound like it's almost working. dennis feels jealous and worried and threatened that maybe dee might actually be seen as normal, especially when she gets her back brace off in the third year. so dennis fucks her roommate, more of a show that he owns and controls each and every pathetic part of dee’s life than anything else. and so that dee knows she'll never be as good as him, she'll never as easily charm people as dennis does. (or at least he tells her he does).

to prove that To Someone dee is Good Enough, and so desperate for attention, dee (who's been groomed all this time) enters a sexual relationship with her professor dr. gainer. she tells herself she has the power in it, that she seduced him ("he didn't molest me. i had sex with him 'cause i wanted to.") and she has a mental break, because the thing she told herself held her back from being loved (her back brace) is finally gone by now and yet she still feels like a monster, and the only scrap of "love" she can get is from her professor.

and then she can't take the fact that she can steal her roommates clothes, can emulate her sexual prowess (in dee's own fucked up, delusional way), and still neither be well liked like her nor be loved by her. so maybe dee will always be a monster. so dee tried to burn her roommate in her bed, because she represented the promise of change and popularity, and that promise was a lie and dee's effort was for nothing. and she's institutionalized.

and i think there was kind of a falling out between the twins and their parents, because barbara wants to abandon dee but dennis can't help but visit her. and frank doesn't even step foot in a place that reminds him of his traumatic childhood, and avoids dee even more than he used to because she is his childhood mirror image. so the family becomes even more fractured and estranged.

and maybe dee becomes medicated and slowly crawls her way halfway to normal by the first season (her acting classes are so well-adjusted, taking part in healthy hobbies of her!). until her father comes back into her life and everything falls apart <3

side note, even though dee is crushingly lonely-"I just got a cat 'cause I wanted something to hang out with. I don't have, you know, a roommate or anything, and I don't really have anyone to talk to..."-AND she struggles to pay rent whenever frank cuts her off, i hc that she refused to ever get a roommate in particular female roommate again after this because both her internalized misogyny got worse and she was afraid of what would happen (what she would do) again.

“You taste like champagne.” You giggled, face not even inches away from his. 

“So do you,” Elliot replied, placing another cold sticky kiss on your lips. His fingers tugged at a ruche on your satin purple dress. “You look so pretty.” 

When you received the invitation to the end-of-the-year dance team banquet you’d felt melancholy. 

However standing (leaning most of your weight on) by your boyfriend, near a wall as an R&B song played under the dim lightning you couldn’t be happier. It wasn’t just the weed or the champagne making you feel fuzzy inside. 

You hummed at his compliment, shoving your face into his dress shirt. 

He wove the hand that wasn’t resting on your hip into your hair pulling you back gently 

“Gonna mess up your makeup, baby.” He leaned down to press a kiss to your forehead. 

Dramatic sparks of hurt flew through you at the way he denied your affections. Your less-than-sober mind clouding your actions. 

“You don’t love me anymore.”

He laughed at the pout on your face before pulling you closer to him by your waist, you sunk into his warmth.

 Growing up you never thought you’d be able to love or be loved by someone as much as you love him. 

“ ‘M sorry.” He whispered, pecking your nose. 

“Good, better be.” You claimed beaming, leaning up to connect his lips with yours. 

When he pulled away you chased him, not letting him go. Kissing him harder than before you wrapped your arms around his neck. He pulled you closer to him, gripping your hips. 

You sighed into his mouth when he deepened the kiss tugging on his hair.  

You pulled away for air and were about to go back in when your friend interrupted you. 

“Just because it’s the end of the year doesn’t mean the PDA rule doesn’t exist,” Chantelle teased. 

You turned around to face her, connecting your back with Elliot’s chest. He buried his face into your hair with a smile. 

“Leave us alone,” You bemoaned morphing into a giggle. 

“Need to borrow her, we’re taking pictures.” Elliot let go of you and watched you falter away in your heels as Chantelle pulled you by the arm. 

A picture with your team turned into 5, which turned into a “Wait that’s my song” and everyone headed straight for the dance floor. 

Every time you tried to find your way back to your table, another one of your teammates stopped to talk to you and offered you some of whatever was in their cup. 

You accepted and made conversation but now you were teetering on the line between tipsy and actually drunk. 

Seeing as the party was dying down Elliot began to search for you until someone was able to point him in your direction. 

Spouting loudly at your friend you stumbled backward in the general direction of your table. 

You grunted as you collided with something along your path. Familiar hands caught you around your waist, you spun around. 

“Elliot!” You called out with a goofy smile. 

“Y/N!” He said back in the same tone. 

“‘Missed you,” You slurred, resting your full weight on him. 

“Yeah?” He asked, readjusting you to his side. 

“Mhm,” You confirmed 

“Ready to go?” He looked down at you wrapped around his arm. 

“Uh huh,” You tiredly nodded before dropping your head against his bicep. 

“Where are your shoes?” He slipped the strap of your dress back up your shoulder from where it had fallen. 

You whined letting out a muffled noise sounding a bit like “I dunno”. 

Elliot reshuffled your body weight to lie right in front of him. He slid a chiffon bow-wrapped chair in front of the two of you before placing you down softly. 

“Stay here,” He warned. 

He waited until you lazily blinked up at him, recognizing a glimpse of understanding in your eyes to place a kiss on your forehead, setting off to find your heels. 

As he made his return with your various miscellaneous items he found you slumped into the chair he left you in. 

He tossed your phone into his front pocket, flinging the straps of your heels around his wrist. 

“C’mon we’re going,” He shook your arm to pull you out of your reprieve. 

You whined at being stolen from your almost sleep, glancing around the room you saw the population dwindling as people left and found their rides. With Elliot’s help, you hoisted yourself out of the chair. 

Whining out an “M’ feet hurt,” and complaining about the dirty ground Elliot picked you up and carried you to his car. 

He knew he couldn’t take you back to your house drunk, your parents would kill him and then you. 

Getting you to stay in the passenger seat was the hard part, but once he got you buckled in the second pulled out of the parking lot you were out cold. 

He was miraculously able to get you through the front door and into his room with no complaints. 

The problems arose when he tried to get you to drink a bottle of water. 

You threw yourself backward from the edge of his bed. Sprawling out with your arms above your head. 

“No ‘m tired,” You ignored him curling your limbs around a spare pillow and shutting your eyes. 

Placing the water bottle next to you on his bed just in case, he left his bedroom door open as he ventured into his cousin’s bathroom for her makeup wipes. 

When he returned you were fully asleep, chest rising slowly, and deeply. 

The bed dipped as he climbed on next to you. As softly as possible he wiped your makeup off. You roused from the cold wetness on your face, blinking your sleep away, you sat straight up like you were never asleep. 

Elliot just continued to remove your makeup. As he moved to the lower half of your face you began to swat at his arms. 

You tried to bite the hand holding the wipe and when we wouldn’t let you, you trapped his hand under your chin. 

“Stop, I’m trying to help you,” He told you. 

You pouted as if you were gearing up to cry. “Are you mad at me?” 

He exhaled heavily before answering. “I’m not, just need you to stay still,”

You nodded valiantly before allowing him to smooth over the rest of your skin. 

As your eyes began to droop again he used both of your arms to pull you towards the edge of the bed. It’d be much easier to assist you while you were still awake. 

He gestured for you to stand up and turn around so he could unzip your dress and slip it down your shoulders. 

Using his shoulder as support you stepped out of the dress and kicked it off your ankle letting it pool on the floor. 

As you stood there in your underwear, Elliot scoured through his dresser for a clean shirt for you to wear to bed. 

He tossed the large graphic tee he came up with next to you. You slipped the shirt around your head before realizing the neck was too tight to pull down the rest of the way. 

“ ‘Need help,” You huffed, pulling Elliot from his search for your bonnet. 

He came to your rescue by using both hands to bunch up the top enough for you to be able to slip your arms through. 

He knew you’d be mad at him when you woke up if you found out he let you go to sleep without a bonnet, so he took the time to find the one you left here a while ago. 

He stretched the satin fabric over your hair and pulled it over your forehead. The bonnet slipped into your eyes obscuring your vision. 

Titling your chin up towards him, Elliot shifted the elastic band to rest on your forehead, placing a kiss to the same spot. 

He was finally able to slip under the covers beside you. 

Now that you’d been wholly woken up, the both of you knew you weren’t going to be able to fall back asleep anytime soon. Which wasn’t a problem because you had nothing to do for the rest of the weekend. Elliot however had to be up by 7 a.m. 

Reaching over his head he grabbed his laptop off his windowsill. He opened Netflix and handed it to you. He turned over onto his side just as you scooched up into the pillows resting at his headboard. 

Sitting the laptop on your lap you opened your joint profile. 

Scrolling through the streaming services limited catalog. You went back to the homepage and something caught your eye. 

“Elliot,” You called testing if he had already fallen asleep. 

He answered without moving. “Hmm?” 

“You watched an episode of Money Heist without me?”

DRAKE VS KENDRICK LAMAR

(Hey! here’s all of the songs i referenced that i cns actually add here! Plewse note i literally forgot to cover *meet the grahams*, but, fuck it, whatever.)

With the recent ongoing war between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, i feel like as someone with way too much time on their hands and nothing else going on for the day, what better than to write a cohesive timeline of literally *everything* that’s happened? And i don’t mean from **First Person Shooter**, i mean from **good kid, m.A.A.d city** type everything. Yeah, the Drake stuff isn’t exactly as recent as it may appear. Saying as theres no more ‘intro’ for me to give, here i go.

***Buried Alive Interlude (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Take Care (2011)***

This was the beginning of the relationship between Drake and Kendrick, both of them considering eachother peers in the industry, despite being in such different lanes. (Lamar conceptual, and Drake more mainstream.), In an interview Lamar describes Drake as “A good guy.” (paraphased), regardless, things seemed alright for the two, the only real “beef” being their opposing views on how they views on their wealth and fame, Lamar keeping personal details quiet, while Drake frequently posts his lavish life to his thousands of followers.

***Poetic Justice (ft. Drake) - good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012)***

To say the two artists were always in some sort of feud would be wrong. On Kendrick’s debut album later rap classic, ***’good kid, m.A.A.d city’***, we see a feature from Drake on the track Poetic Justice. A few things of note though, is that this time period shows us a good natured relationship between Drake and Kendrick, even Drake going as far to say that *“GKMC was the last great concept album.”,* though there was definitely tensions between the two, as Drake’s refusal to work with Kendrick again began after the lyric **”I’m usually homeboys with the same n——s i’m rhymin’ with, but this is hip-hop and them n——s should know what time it is. And that goes for J.Cole, Big KRIT, Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mills A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler and Mac Miller, I got love for you all, but i’m tryna slaughter you n——s.”**

Drake took an offence to this, and spited a refusal to work with Kendrick over it, seeing it as a diss, though nowadays most view this as friendly competition from Lamar. After the fact of Drake’s refusal though, Lamar did go back on another song to say **”Yeah, and nothings been the same since they dropped Control. Tucked a sensitive rapper back into his pyjama clothes.”**, this line being aimed at Drake, and actually being considered the starting point between the two’s feud, having Drake in interviews act nonchalantly and saying he isn’t “taking the bait”, he was the only rapper to have taken offence to Lamar’s initial lyric. Some also found Drake’s initial compliments to *GKMC* offensive, as the term “concept album” usually gives the idea that everything on the album is a story, or ‘made up’, implying that Drake believes Kendrick’s story in Compton was fiction, though i find that to be a bit of a stretch personally. Some people also found it as a fairly backhanded compliment because of this.

***Control (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Big Sean***

I mentioned earlier about how this song sparked the real aggression between the two artists, and that statement still stands. Coming off of tour alongside Drake and A$AP Rocky, we saw Lamar feature on this song alongside Big Sean, in which he aims not just for Drake, but the rap industry as a whole. To repeat the lyric from earlier, **”**I’m usually homeboys with the same n——s i’m rhymin’ with, but this is hip-hop and them n——s should know what time it is. And that goes for J.Cole, Big KRIT, Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mills A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler and Mac Miller, I got love for you all, but i’m tryna slaughter you n——s.”** This lead the press to obviously inquire Drake on his thoughts on this, to which he responded: *”I didn’t really have anything to say about it. It just sounded like an ambitious thought to me. That’s all it was. I know good and well that [Lamar] ‘s not murdering me, at all, in any platform. So when that day presents itself, I guess we can revisit the topic.”* This quote came with the claims that Lamar’s ‘dream’ of murdering him (metaphorically) was simply a fantasy, and that he simply couldn’t live up to what Drake had established. In other words, Drake believes his star power keeps him away from the threats Lamar proceeds.

***King Kunta - To Pimp a Butterfly/100 - The Game***

In these tracks, Drake begins to show a response to Lamar’s claims. In *King Kunta*, from Kendrick’s sequel album **To Pimp a Butterfly**, now widely considered one of the most influential albums in rap, Lamar pens **“I can dig rapping! But a rapper with a ghostwriter? What the fuck happened?”** this lyric is aimed at allegations that some of Drake’s music is written by a team, rather than himself—— more commonly referred to as ‘ghostwriting’, I haven’t heard much about this, but i do believe the lyric **”I got a bone to pick! I don’t want these monkey-mouthed motherfuckers sitting in my throne again!”** could be a potential dig at not just Drake, but the industry as a whole— something Lamar has done a few times as we’ve covered. Either in coincidence or response, Drake released a jab at Lamar around the same time, penning **”I would have all your fans if i didn’t go pop and stayed down on some conscious shit.”** these two lyrics are really the last time in the 2010’s we hear of the beef between Drake and Kendrick up until the recent events, with both of them seemingly simmering, nothing is really said as far as i’m aware between this point and the next.

***First Person Shooter (ft. J.Cole) - FOR ALL THE DOGS (2023)***

Oh J.Cole. you poor, poor man.

*First Person Shooter*, one of the lead singles for Drake’s album ***FOR ALL THE DOGS***, is with no doubt a victory lap for Drake and his colleague Jermaine Cole (more frequently, J.Cole). On the track, Cole pens **”People argue who’s the hardest MC, is it K.Dot, is it Aubrey or me? We the big three like we started a league, but right now i feel like Mohammed Ali.”** Now to most, this would come off as a compliment, with Cole stating that the big three of rap is him, Kendrick Lamar and Drake, though a few people saw this as fairly backhanded, seeing the following Mohammed Ali comment along with the fact that Drake was also on the song to be placing Lamar in third, implying that Cole believes those two usurp Kendrick, putting him in the top 3 out of pity in a sense. This is what set the current ball in motion, and more importantly, set off Metro Boomin and Future. (Well, not really, but the next instalment happens to come from their album ***We Don’t Trust You*,** so…)

***Like That (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - We Don’t Trust You (Metro Boomin and Future) (2024)***

This is where the games begin. Lamar is featured as a surprise feature on Future and Metro Boomin’s collaboration album, **We Don’t Trust You**. In this surprise however, Lamar comes in full force. Penning **”They think i won’t drop the location, i still got PTSD, motherfuck the big three, n——a it’s just big ME! (n——a bum!)”**, being the most iconic of the shots thrown from Lamar, as for after Kendrick continues to call Drake and Cole ‘bums’. It’s obvious that this is aimed at the two, as Kendrick starts his verse with **”Fuck sneak dissing, First Person Shooter? i hope they came with three switches, i crash out like ‘FUCK RAP!’ diss Melly Mells if i have to, got 2 tees with me, i’m snatching chains and burning tattoos.”** This is, of course, the beginning of what i like to call “the war” between Drake and Kendrick (and J.Cole, who immediately backs out, respect to him though, shit gets crazy.), for the first few weeks, neither artists really respond to these lyrics, up until J.Cole.

***7 Minute Drill - MIGHT DELETE LATER (J.Cole) 2024***

This is where the responses come in. J.Cole fires back at Lamar after a few weeks of seemingly nothing from the two aimed at in FPS, on this track, Cole aims singularly for Lamar, using a multitude of lyrics and phrases to insult him. This isn’t actually the first time Lamar and Cole have been in a sort of “battle”, though with the brotherly bond between the two, it’s been seemingly in good hearted nature. On the track, Cole raps **”He’s averaging one hard verse like, every 30 months or somethin’.”** in reference to the large release windows between Kendrick’s albums, GKMC, TPAB, DAMN. and Mr Morale. Following this, he states that **”If he wasn’t dissing, then we wouldn’t be discussing him.”** Implying that if he hadn’t been aiming for the two, nobody would be discussing Kendrick Lamar at all. This most likely comes from the radio silence from Kendrick since Mr. Morale outside of surprise features like **America has a Problem.** Cole also claims that he’s **”Front of the line, with a comfortable lead, how ironic, soon as i got it, now he wants something with me.**” Telling us that Cole’s belief is Lamar’s aiming is out of jealousy or envy, rather than the usual friendly competition between the two. In a more extended line proceeding this, he pens **”Your first shit? A classic. Your last shit was tragic. Your second shit put n——s to sleep but the gassed it. Your third shit was massive, and THAT was your prime, i was trailing right behind, and i just now hit mine.”** Each line in this lyric is directed to a different Kendrick Lamar album. His first shit (***good kid, m.A.A.d city***) is considered a classic in the rap genre, and is considered by some to be Lamar’s best album. His last shit (**Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers**) is taken in a completely different direction than most of Lamar’s previous work, this leads it to be more negatively reviewed among the rest of his works. His second shit (**To Pimp a Butterfly***)* Is the follow-up album to GKMC, showing us the first instance of Lamar’s social commentary (though, present in GKMC), this making Cole claim it as putting people to sleep, as it was too introspective and political (This line is heavily disagreed with, as most people perceive TPAB as the best rap album of all time.) His third shit (***DAMN.***) is considered by most to be Kendrick’s prime, and also the peak of his fame. Featuring artists like Rhianna and with hit classics like DNA. and HUMBLE., the album is considered some of Lamar’s most iconic work to date. After the release of ***7 Minute Drill***, J.Cole immediately backed out and apologised, stating “Do y’all love Kendrick Lamar? Cause so do i.” And basically apologising to him. To this day it’s unknown wether or not this was out of either respect or fear for Lamar, though we do know that ScHoolboy Q, a colleague of Cole’s, told him to simply not get involved, as he knew it was more of a thing between Kendrick and Drake.

***Push Ups (Drop and Give Me 50) - Drake (2024)***

This transitions is smoothly into where we really are today, the consistent stream of tracks between Drake and Kendrick that seemingly antagonise eachother to no end. We begin with **Push Ups**, a track where Drake goes not just for Kendrick, but for everyone involved with ***We Don’t Trust You***. Drake starts the track with **”Drop, drop, drop, drop…”**, a seeming triple entendre to a multitude of things relating to Kendrick. First off, some interpret this as Drake telling Lamar to “drop” something, either being a response to him, or just solo music in general. Another interpretation follows the idea that he is telling Kendrick to “drop and give him 50%”, as it’s suspected that Lamar’s label takes a 50% cut of whatever he releases. A third (and less interesting) interpretation is that it’s in reference to Lamar’s frequenting of the parks to do his exercise routines, namely doing 50 pushups. following this we hear **”I could never be nobodies number one fan, your first number one, i had to put that in your hands.”**, Implying Drake believes Kendrick’s fame comes from his features on Drake’s album ***Take Care***, and Drake’s features on ***Poetic Justice*** (both covered earlier.), following this, we get **”How the fuck you big-stepping with a size seven men’s on?”**, this is both a reference to Lamar’s album ***Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers***, and also Lamar’s height, being 5’5. Later on, we get **”Maroon 5 need a verse, you better make it witty. Then we need a verse for the Swifties, Top says drop, you better drop and give em 50!”**, this is in reference to how Kendrick has previously featured on songs for both Maroon 5 (***Don’t Wanna Know**)* and Taylor Swift (***Bad Blood***), Drake uses this almost in mocking. The “drop and give me 50” line is repeated through the song. Following this is **”Its like your label, boy, you’re in the scope right now. And you’re gonna feel the aftermath of what i write down.”**, this references both of the labels Lamar has been signed to, Interscope Records and Aftermath Records. To cap off what i’m gonna cover for this song (lest i be here for hours), Drake pens **”Pipsqueak, pipe down. You ain’t in no big three, SZA got you wiped down, Savage got you wiped down, Travis got you wiped down—“**, this line tells us seemingly whay Drake *a*ctually believes to be the big three, unlike what Cole claimed on First Person Shooter, this also seemingly a jab at Cole aswell, as Drake seems to ‘remove’ him from the big three. He later also says **”I don’t care what Cole think, that Dot shit was weak as fuck.”** seemingly solidifying this line of thought. Drake is now out for both Kendrick and Cole.

***Taylor Made Freestyle - Drake (2023)***

This song seemingly stems from Drake’s impatience for Lamar to respond. (something he’d largely backtrack on later), To give some context to the title, the real beef between the two began during the release of Taylor Swift’s album ***The Tortured Poets Department***, because of this, Drake accuses Lamar of being “scared” to drop within this timeframe, in fear of being overshadowed. Unfortunately, in this song Drake begins by targeting one of Kendrick’s idols, Tupac, through the use of his AI Generated voice, a move that would wildly lose Drake the public vote. I’m not going to cover the stuff that’s used from the AI Snoop Dogg or Tupac primarily because (and trying to remain as completely unbiased as possible), Drake is a massive bitch for using them. Anyway, onto the first line of note: **”But now we gotta wait a fuckin’ week cause Taylor Swift is your new Top, And if you boutta drop then she has to approve.”**, this comes again from Drake’s belief that Kendrick is scared of dropping out of fear of being overshadowed, stating it as if Taylor ‘owns’ Kendrick. If i’m being completely honest, that’s literally all i can say about this track, pretty much every line aimed at Kendrick can be summed up to that exact definition, so i’ll move on the the next track.

***euphoria - Kendrick Lamar (2024)***

This is where Kendrick begins his involvement, by not just dropping his response, but by dropping two in one day, **euphoria** and **6:16 in LA** (the latter of which i’ll cover next). The track begins with a reversed sample from a remake of ***The Wizard of Oz***, in which a character proclaims **”Everything they say about me is true!”**, this could be interpreted to Kendrick owning up to the title of *”The Boogeyman”* some have given him in previous beefs. Following up this, Lamar begins the track with a slow, melodic beat, as he softly rhymes over the top of it. He pens **”You’re moving just like a degenerate, every antic is feeling distasteful.”** in reference to Drake’s use of AI voices on ***Taylor Made Freestyle***. After this, we receive a beat switch in which Lamar begins to ‘battle-rap’. We begin with **”Have you ever paid five hundered thou’ like, to an open case?”** This line is allegedly written in reference to Drake’s sexual assault allegations from Instagram model *Laquana Morris*, in which he paid $350k in settlement. Though this could also be in reference to Lamar’s 2017 lawsuit in which LOYALTY. was accused of plagiarism by *Terrance Hayes*, a case that was later dismissed and dropped with little to no explanation. Later, Lamar pens **”Id rather do that than let a Canadian n——a make Pac roll in his grave.”**, Another reference to Drake’s previous usage of Tupac’s AI voice, and more notably, Kendrick’s desire to defend Tupac’s legacy from that sort of usage. **”What is it, the braids? Oh you dont wanna work with me no more? Okay.”** Is in reference to how Drake’s haircut (twisted braids) has him thinking wrong to go against him. The following comment about not working with him is in reference to Kendrick’s comments on **Control**, aimed at Drake, and his reaction to no longer wanting to work with Lamar. **”Its three GOATs left, and i see two of em hugging and kissing on stage.”** Is in reference to ***It’s All A Blur Tour***, in which J. Cole and Drake headlined together, a photo commonly shared of the two of them hugging on stage. **”Yeah, fuck all that pushing P, let me see you Pusha T!”** Is in reference to Drake’s previous beef with Pusha T, in which he revealed that Drake had a son, Adonis. This later removed all responses from Drake, making people consider Pusha T the winner. There’s a LOT more lyrics in this song, but i’m gonna cut it primarily for actually making space for the rest of this stuff.

***6:16 in LA - Kendrick Lamar (2024)***

In a surprising move from Kendrick, he released two songs in a row, this one more personally aimed at not just Drake and everyone he’s associated with, but Drake himself. With this track there aren’t many lyrics i actually want to select and really explain like i have in previous sections so i’d be better off more or less explaining how tensions were in the release of this track. People were no short of surprised to see Lamar drop such a substantial amount of tracks in one day, making most people seemingly ‘switch sides’ from Drake, while most others applied the argument that “most had decided their winner before their battle even started.”, however this song is the prelude before we really get Kendrick to delve into Drake’s allegations, and more impressively, straight up call him a p*dophile.

***Family Matters - Drake (2024)***

After a day or two of waiting with bated breath, Drake finally responded to Lamar’s tracks with a return to burn Kendrick. The song begins with a reused sample of **Push-Ups**, almost making the song seem to be a sequel to that, Drake begins by proclaiming that **”Cole losing sleep over this, that ain’t me.”**, in reference to Cole’s exiting from the battle. However a lyric following this further landed Drake into a negative public opinion, as he raps **”Always rappin’ like you’re tryna get the slaves freed.”**, seemingly dissmissing to the work Kendrick’s done for knowledge on Black History, as well as mocking Lamar’s general influence and introspective style of rap. Later, Drake finally fires back with allegations that Kendrick is abusive toward his wife, with the line **”Ay, let that shawty breathe.”**, allowing the listener to interpret that Lamar may be involved in abusing his wife, Whitney. (Though, this was later seemingly disproved by a tweet from Whitney’s brother showing support toward Kendrick.) Drake then raps **”Shake that ass for Drake, and shake that ass for free.”**, implying both that Whitney is disloyal to Kendrick, and that Drake supposedly wants this to be a song people dance to in clubs via twerking or something, this later backfired as Lamar’s next track, ***Not Like Us***, actually ended up being played in a multitude of clubs and raves upon release. Drake later raps **”good kid, m.A.A.d city van, we’ll pop the latch and let the door slide.”**, seemingly in reference to a drive-by in Kendrick’s Compton days, as in the album the Van is used as a symbol of protection from the violence in the world outside. Drake is proclaiming he will destroy Kendrick’s only sense of protection. In Part III of the song, Drake begins by rapping **”Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now.”**, seemingly believing that all of Lamar’s Grammys are given based off of popularity over talent, though Drake follows this with **”Where is your uncle at? Cause i wanna talk to the man of the house.”,** this is in reference to the **Mr Morale and the Big Steppers** track **Auntie Diaries**, in which Kendrick tells the story of his Auntie transitioning into his Uncle. The bar basically mocks Kendrick for being less masculine than a trans person, sort of transphobic to me but, yknow. From here it’s just more lyrics about the allegations of Kendrick’s abuse of his wife, bringing us onto **Not Like Us**.

***Not Like Us - Kendrick Lamar (2024)***

This track is the pinpoint for when we go from ***To Pimp a Butterfly*** to ***To Catch a Predator***. In this track, Kendrick fully goes in on Drake’s sexual abuse and pedophilia allegations, exposing a major amount of Drake’s argument. The first influential lyric on this track is **”Say, Drake, I hear you like em’ young.”**, again in reference to these allegations, now, to get this out of the way now, i’m gonna say the same for **”Certified Lover Boy? Certified Pedophile!”** and **”Tryna stroke a chord, and it’s probably A-Minor!”**, the first of which being a reference to Drake’s album **Certified Lover Boy**, and the second referencing the guitar chord A-Minor, entendres with “a minor” (Holy shit, man.) **”Certified Boogeyman, i’m the one who upped the score with em’.”** Is in reference to the **Halloween** character *Micheal Myers*, and more importantly his intimidating presence, that of which Kendrick implies he also brings in his opponents, the usage of ‘certified’ could also be another reference to **Certified Lover Boy**., and with all that covered, that’s pretty much all that comes from this track and, honestly, the beef in general.

***THE HEART PART 6 - Drake (2024)***

To remain as unbiased as possible, this is where things get downright embarrassing, and honestly, what solidifies Kendrick Lamar’s win. For starters, the track title itself is in reference to Lamar’s **The Heart** series, which is typically used to debut a new album, like **DAMN.** and **Mr Morale and the Big Steppers.** This is actually a joke that was frequently used on Twitter beforehand, as well see with the rest of this track, most of Drake’s research comes less from his peers and more from Twitter, the track itself actually is an attempt to mock Kendrick Lamar’s sexual assault, something of which we learn, actually never happened. Drake raps **”Mother i— Mother i— That’s the one record where you say you got molested.”**, despite him saying this, **Mother I** is Kendrick talking about how his cousin didn’t molest him, but none of his family believed him, in other words, Drake completely misses the point. Before this Drake raps **”This Epstein angle is the shit i expected.”** When, in prior songs, nobody has mentioned Jeffrey Epstien. He also raps **”I only fuck with Whitneys, not no Millie Bobbie Browns.”** in reference to his allegations in messaging *Stranger Things* star Millie Bobbie Brown, despite being 17 years older than her. Yet again, Kendrick had never mentioned this beforehand.

***MR. MORALE VS THE 6IX GOD.***

In the end, it comes down to personal opinion on who you really think ‘won’ this sort of thing, it’s a very arguable and personal thing, wether you believe that Kendrick beats his wife, or that Drake is a pedophile, just know either way, when i release this Kendrick Lamar would have released 4 more tracks.

📁 Interview 003: "Emulating Windows on MacOS for UTAU Workflow." ft. ryouichii

Today's topic is something most of you all must be curious about, when making my content, my job is to make UTAU on MacOS a better experience for everyone. So today I pulled together a very interesting interview on contrasting the experience of UTAU on Windows and MacOS operating systems! We will be interviewing UTAU content creator Ryouichii for today's interview, who operates between MacOS and Windows in their workflow.

Before we get started with the questions, please introduce yourself!

Ryouichi: I’m Ryouichi! I'm an artist and UTAU user from the UK, I make covers and manage 3 (soon-to-be 4) UTAUs! My main UTAU is Hikuine Kiiro, who just recently got a massive multi-expression VCV for his 10th anniversary!

I'm super proud of it.. it took me more than a year to put together. I got into Vocaloid around 2011-2012 and subsequently found out UTAU is a thing at around 2013? It took me a while, but I released my first UTAU in late 2014 and it's led me to where I am now !

That's incredible! You've been in the scene since the very beginning! I'm happy to see you're still here pouring out your passion into your work. Kiiro is a very impressive UTAU. I look forward to seeing your new projects to come! For our first question, I originally saw your tweet when you sold your PC to work on MacOS, and it really interested me because. I normally don't see phenomena like that, its normally vice versa?

Q. So, when switching to MacOS, what stood out to you, and why did you switch?

Ryouichi: I mainly switched to MacOS out of frustration with Windows 11, and with Windows 10 reaching EOS, I thought it was time to jump ship. I was getting tired of the constant hitches and bugs, along with Microsoft forcing bloatware onto my PC. I remember specifically watching the bluetooth menu freaking the heck out and I just gave up on the spot and went to look for Macbooks. Funnily enough, past experiences with MacOS was a little frustrating too (...not sure if it was because I had no idea what I was doing?), but this was around the OS X days, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. When I switched, Sonoma was the latest version, and it felt sooo much easier to use compared to El Capitan personally.

I see, I've heard of the difficulties with the latest in Windows. At least Macs give you the option to update! It is very common when switching from Windows, most my friends complain to me about the interface of MacOS, but its something that I've used for the last 13 years! But I get the struggle because I recently got a Windows laptop and it feels so rigid compared to MacOS? But I feel I've gotten better at navigating it and broke the habit of double clicking! (haha)

Q. For the next question, before the interview, we discussed emulation on MacOS, so I would like to ask what it is like having a workflow reliant on emulation, and what it is like producing a cover between Mac and Windows OS?

Ryouichi: It's definitely clunky, and at one point, I had to change my external storage from a hard drive to an SSD because of the hangs and freezes it would cause. It can also be very expensive!! Parallels charges up the butt for a license, and you don't even get to own the software if you don't want weird limits on performance. I know there's VMware, but I couldn't get it to access my external storage for whatever reason, so I dropped that pretty quickly. I've gotten used to Parallels over the months, though! It can be slow at times, but it allows me to use a workflow I'm very comfy with, and that's perfectly fine with me. As for making covers between OS's, I find Mac to be more restrictive than Windows personally. It's because I established a good workflow while I was still using Windows, and trying to fit that into MacOS proved difficult. I will say producing videos on MacOS feels much smoother though!! I used to use AviUtl for that stuff, but moving to MacOS forced me to switch to more professional software like After Effects, and it runs like a dream… I've dabbled with it on Windows before and found the performance to be not so good? So in comparison, it's great, honestly.

A Parallels license is quite expensive! Its the only option for Silicon MacOS as far as I know, but on Intel, I did have a Windows Bootcamp set up. It was quite laggy, so I deleted the partition and stuck with vanilla MacOS. For MV production, I will say the larger programs like the Adobe suite, and Final Cut, run MUCH better on Apple Silicon than on Intel MacOS. So because of this I do all of my MV production on my iPad!

Continuing on the topic of emulation, people have mentioned Wine and Homebrew, but I do believe that running UTAU2008 through these means is a bit clunky. Found this out recently when trying to emulate Notepad++, as its a hassle to boot and locate using the Wine emulator. So when opting for Parallels, while it might be expensive you’re paying for the quality as well!

This was a very good contrast between Windows and MacOS; taking advantage of both operating systems, and discussing virtual machine emulation!

Q. To continue on the topic, what sorts of features do you wish MacOS had?

Ryouichi: It's not really a MacOS feature, but more on the end of developers… I really wish there was more MacOS support for games. Sure, there's crossover and GPTK which do an amazing job with translating games over to apple silicon, but I prefer native support, since some games are SO particular and finicky on crossover. It's a shame that there's barely any games coming out with that, especially with how good graphical processing is getting with the newer chips. But if I had to nitpick, I wish there were individual app volume sliders… and I wish screenshots were automatically copied into the clipboard … but that's about it honestly.

Ah yes, I recently have been looking into Crossover but I genuinely wish there was more support for MacOS. Crossover perpetual will cost an arm and a leg, but I believe it is much more streamlined than Wine. Crossover has the convenience of making your Windows applications accessible from a singular hub rather than digging in your system files. This is one of the main reasons I got a Windows laptop was to play the games I bought during steam sales!

On the topic of volume control, after trying Windows, I noticed there was a built-in feature to adjust individual App volume! I love this feature, but was something I had to pay for on my Mac using Sound Control, and that has been working smoothly for me. As for screenshots, I was not aware they did that! But I do see how that would be inconvenient. On iOS you're given the option to copy and paste a screenshot if I remember correctly.

Q. To wrap up this interview, what are you future ambitions for your work?

Ryouichi: My future ambitions ……. I'm not the type to really have those, honestly, I tend to just do what I wanna do without really thinking ahead. I guess I'd like to see myself improve! I like looking back on old art and covers and comparing it with what I've produced more recently. It's a really big reason why I'm still going, gives me a sense that what I'm doing is really doing something. I'd also want to dabble with different languages in vocal synths… I've been thinking of adding Korean to Kiiro's DiffSinger voicebank when I get around to re-recording it?? I just hope my bri'ish accent isn't distracting, innit ™️ I'd also like to put my name out more, be it making PVs for people, entering contests or something like CVfest if that's happening next year! I've noticed I've been losing interest over the years and I'd really like to revitalize it by doing things I usually wouldn't.

I see! Normally I just pick up work as I go, so it was probably a very direct question. Dabbling in other languages sounds fun! It can be very daunting, but I wish you all the luck with it, I’m sure you'll do fantastic! CVfest is a great event, a lot of people touch back into making a simple voicebank and build characters together! It's something I would be interested in as well! As for keeping passion more consistent, I think the easiest way to keep your interest is to incorporate new ideas and mediums into vocal synth as its a very tangible hobby! I've found myself using all my skills for it, so its very expansive. That being said, I appreciate you sharing your time and insight with us today on the KEITAIWARE project! It was a normal day at the 118 for the most part. If anything a strangely quiet day. Everyone was sat down for dinner as Buck fantasized about Bobby’s Mac and cheese tuning everyone out.

“BUCK!” A voice shouted. He didn’t need to process the voice he immediately knew who said it. With a quick glance around the table looking for his boy he finds Christopher. He stands up and Chris runs into his arms. There is a moment where buck wants to remind him that his dad is in fact with them but they all knew that. Whatever the reason he was there for he was there for Buck and no one questioned it. Well buck did a little.

“What’s going on?” Buck asked suspiciously. If you asked Buck he would tell you your wrong but everyone else saw the way bucks hands and eyes roamed over Chris’ small figure. Panic, worry, and admiration seeping through his gaze like a dam breaking loose.

“I asked Carla to bring me here.” Chris smiled up at Buck. Almost proud he convinced the woman to bend to his will. Little does he know Chris could have called Buck and he would pick him up himself. Buck knows he needs to not be the fun guy right now though.

“Christopher you can’t leave school cause you wanna come here. You could have head over after school but I need you to understand that school is very important.” Buck didn’t think too much about what he was saying because to be honest he was saying it to remind himself. It had been a while since he had last seen him. For the last few weeks it has been ft and phone calls at night but that was it.

“Buck. You need a couch before you say anything like that to me again.” The attitude in those words was one hundred percent his dad. As he tried to remember the last time he made a joke like that he calls Carla to the table and pulls a seat beside him for his kid.

“Are you here just to humiliate me? Your dad has that covered.” He shoots a playful glare at Eddie. Eddie isn’t paying attention to the words spoken just the way Buck and Chris are interacting. Like it’s a new thing he has never experienced.

“No. I want you to hear me out before you say anything,” Christopher starts slowly, “ I was talking with some friends and they mentioned that their parents let them stay a week or so at their other parents house and I wanna stay with you for a week.” Chris cautiously starts. He doesn’t feel how Buck stopped breathing. He doesn’t see the shock on chim and Henriettas face. He doesnt see the way Bobby and Carla look at Buck. He doesn’t notice the way Eddie looks at him. “You can clearly take care of me: you did it when dad was shot. I think I can handle the snoring. I miss you and I haven’t seen you in forever and it feels like you’re leaving and I can’t handle that buck. I can’t loose you too.” For all the things Chris ignores, Buck can’t ignore the tears in Chris’ eyes as the words roll off his tongue.

“Chris… they are talking about their mom and dads. You have a mom and you have a dad. If you miss me just come over. I will make a weekend of it and you can take my bed and I will take the couch okay. I just need you to remember I am not trying to be a replacement for your dad. I’m not your father Chris but trust me your dad is so lucky to be yours. Leaving you….leaving you isn’t an option for me. You’re my soul. As soon as I met you I knew there was never gonna be a choice I make where you weren’t involved.” Buck tried not to look at the young man. He just couldn’t. He needed him to know that he would never ever leave. The images of all the people who left him flash through his mind and when the idea of Chris came about he couldn’t breathe. It’s not normal to care this much for a kid that’s not your own. He doesn’t think of him as a nephew or a brother but he is still the most important person in his life.

“What’s a dad buck?” It wasn’t a genuine question. But he wanted a genuine awnser.

“A dad. That is the person who fights for you. You know he is always on your team. If you’re in a bad situation you know he will drop everything just to get to you. He loves you endlessly and supports you through everything. From homework to bailing you out of jail. You know he will never intend to harm you and will kill anyone who tries.” Chris’ arms are around him and he is shaking. Buck holds him not coming close to understanding what’s going on but knowing what he needs. If he wants to tell him he will.

“The tusnami, you thought you didn’t protect me.” Chris remembers the way Buck tried to save others. Buck remembers going to Bobby’s that night and sobbing against him while Athena reassured him how his boy was safe at home. Buck had rambled nonsense the entire night about what could have happened. He is brought back to reality by the small hands on his face. Holding steady, the way you would approach a stray dog. Unsure of if you’re going to scare it off or not. Turning his body to face Christopher’s he takes his hands and places it on his heart. Remembering the way Maddie used to do that to show that her heart was his. The same way Bucks heart is his. “You saved me over and over again. When I went overboard I thought that was it. You jumped though. You came after me to find me. You did everything you could to keep me with you. When my dad was in the hospital you didn’t leave me to go with Carla. You immediately took care of me. I hear the comments people make. That you are a kid yourself. You can’t be a dad.” Buck knows it’s irrational but hearing these words come out of a Diaz’s mouth hurts. He can’t be a dad for someone. For Christopher he can be though. If that’s how he wants buck he will give him that part. “You bake goods and help me with my homework and tell me to get ready for school and love me no matter what I say or do and losing you is as scary as losing my dad. I had three parents and now I have two.” Christopher trails off looking around. Now he notices everyone. All the tears streaming down peoples faces and the shock and awe of Christopher’s heart being pulled out of his chest and gently being placed with Bucks.

“You and your dad have parts of me I never knew existed. This is just another one. Being a dad is something I can’t even imagine. But being anything less to you is even harder. Buddy, any way you guys want me I will give you. As long as you guys want me. I don’t want you to just say this cause you miss me though. If you miss me, tell me. Don’t say things you don’t mean.” He whispers to Chris. Buck isn’t whispering because he doesn’t want other people hearing. He physically can’t talk normally. His heart is in his throat and he doesn’t want to talk he just wants to hold him. Chris wants to talk so that is what he will do.

“Buck…. Will you be my dad?” Christopher pulls a cheap little ring that you get out of dispensers out of his pocket. Just like that, if there was any hesitation at all about being this kids dad it’s gone. The smile on his face as he tries not to laugh at his own joke makes him want to scream from the Hollywood sign that Christopher Diaz is his son and he is coparenting with Edmundo Diaz.

“Yes!” He screams dramatically matching Christopher’s smile tooth for tooth.

After an hour of everyone talking Carla and Chris leave. When Buck goes to lay down on the couch the 118 meet him there. They surround him on the floor and furniture while he thinks about what just happened.

“He called you his dad.” Eddie breaks the silence. To afraid to say anything he sits silently waiting for Eddie to continue. “Move over, Evan.” The name makes the silence deadly. The last time he called him that they were talking about him being Christopher’s legal guardian.

“I’m not gonna hurt him Edmundo.” Buck says with a slight edge to his voice. This was the first time Buck has ever called him that and Eddie ignores the ping in his chest of happiness. The 118 watches them, eyeing Buck… studying Eddie….

“I made you his legal guardian. I viewed you as his other dad before anyone else. I just want to know how you feel.” Eddie places his hand on Bucks shoulder. His thumb on his jugular feeling the steady yet slightly racing pulse beating through his body from that one inch.

“Nothing changed. He just went for the title.” Buck shoots Eddie a teasing smile replaying his words from the kitchen.

I've been assigned a whole bunch of writing assignments concurrently, which is very annoying. I am pretty much forced to not procrastinate, or else lose my weekend and whatever else I have.

The kind and talented @winterandwords tagged me to post one of the darlings I had to kill (or as they put it, "a snippet that didn't make it into the latest draft of a story").

“Find your repurpose,” Dawson grumbled, rolling the wheel of her car toward the OPEN HOUSE sign. There was a cookie-cutter, carbon-copy sign on every street for ten or twenty blocks that said those same three words. “Find your repurpose.” They appeared overnight, the night before her rent control was lifted. “Better than affordable housing,” the recruiter had said. (He had been plastering her workplace with flyers for hours, making sure that he did not miss an inch of poorly-mortared brick.) “300 sq. ft. can be so much more than you’ll ever need.” “More than you’ll ever want.” “That’s why they call them Forever Homes.” Insufferable, carbon-copy recruiter. A man who would apparate in your bathroom if you turned off the lights and said “Old Navy” three times in a row. Forever Homes never needed him to begin with. Not once did his freshly-pressed polo shirt convince a business man to walk into a repurposed shipping container and never walk out again. Not once did his carbon-copy signs make a woman turn away from pilates class to see what it might be like to forget the smell of fresh air and dandelions. What sold people, impoverished people, was the freedom from basic human needs. Food and shelter in exchange for whatever mark you might have made on this earth. There was no competition between sunshine and a full belly. Then, there were the advertisements… the ones of the brown-eyed girl who had been living on the streets her whole life, walking into a Forever Home that slotted in furniture to depict a toy store where every teddy bear and baby doll was free– the one in which she picked up a bear the size of herself and they waddled into the next room to see a feast of lobster mac and cheese, shrimp gumbo, collared greens. She laughed deliriously and swung her bear up to see the treasure they had found. Dawson had no daughter, she just… She needed to be happy– childishly happy. She needed to eat lobster mac and cheese and hold a bear the size of herself, whether she was in her thirties, her teens, her terrible twos… She deserved that, didn’t she? “So glad you could come check out–” Dawson shoved past the Old Navy man, knocking him into a poorly concealed tower of hydraulic delivery systems. They were the things that carried the shelves, tables, and frivolous things around. She opened the door to the house, proclaimed as OPEN, and looked around to see nothing but an empty, off-white shipping container with subtle slits here and there. “Where’s the ON switch?” He cleared his throat. “Voice control keywords are on the blue poster, but if you...” She slammed the door before he could stick his foot in it. For good measure, she leaned her weight against the door a while, in case he tried to barge in, uninvited. She knew he was only doing a job, but he was still a human with thoughts and feelings, and she would prefer that those thoughts and feelings never perceived her: a butch 32-year-old, sobbing into the teddy bear from the Forever Homes commercials. From the outside, the recruiter only heard the hissing of hydraulics and clanking of metal furniture being pushed in and out of place. Not a whimper could be heard from the outside. Not a word. She emerged with a chapped nose and glassy eyes. “How did you like…?” “Yeah. It was fine, yeah.” Her frown was as forced as his smile. “Well, you can always come back if you change your mind.” “Sure. I’ll think about it.”
