POURQUOI DEVRIONS-NOUS LIRE LES PURITAINS ?

Le grand revivaliste du XVIIIe siècle, George Whitefield, a écrit :

Les puritains [étaient] des lumières brûlantes et brillantes. Lorsqu'ils furent chassés par le noir Bartholomew Act, et chassés de leurs charges respectives pour prêcher dans les granges et les champs, sur les routes et les haies, ils écrivirent et prêchèrent d'une manière particulière en tant qu'hommes ayant autorité. Bien que morts, ils parlent encore par leurs écrits : une onction particulière les accompagne jusqu'à cette heure même. (Œuvres, 4:306-307)

Whitefield a ensuite prédit que les écrits puritains continueraient à ressusciter jusqu'à la fin des temps en raison de leur spiritualité scripturaire. Aujourd’hui, nous vivons une telle époque. L’intérêt pour les livres puritains a rarement été aussi intense. Au cours des cinquante dernières années, 150 auteurs puritains et près de 700 titres puritains ont été réédités.

La littérature puritaine s’est tellement multipliée que peu d’amateurs de livres peuvent se permettre d’acheter tout ce qui est publié. Quels livres acheter ? Où pouvez-vous trouver un bref résumé de chaque œuvre puritaine et une brève biographie de chaque auteur afin que vous puissiez avoir un aperçu de qui se cache derrière tous ces livres ?

Ce genre de questions a motivé Randall Pederson et moi à écrire Meet the Puritans: With a Guide to Modern Reprints. Dans ce livre, nous racontons les histoires de vie de 150 écrivains puritains réimprimés au cours des cinquante dernières années. Nous avons également inclus des critiques concises des 700 titres puritains récemment publiés ainsi que des informations bibliographiques sur chaque livre. Et nous avons noté les livres que nous considérons comme les plus essentiels à avoir dans une bibliothèque personnelle.

Nous avions quatre objectifs en écrivant ce livre : premièrement, que ces pieux écrivains puritains servent de mentors dans nos propres vies. C’est pourquoi nous avons raconté les histoires des puritains au niveau du profane et les avons gardées brèves. Vous pourriez lire une histoire de vie chaque jour pendant votre temps de dévotion. Deuxièmement, nous sommes convaincus que lorsque vous lirez ces critiques d’écrits puritains, vous serez motivé à lire un certain nombre de ces livres, dont chacun devrait vous aider à approfondir votre marche avec le Seigneur. Troisièmement, nous espérons que ce livre vous servira de guide pour acheter des livres pour votre famille et vos amis, afin de les aider à grandir dans la foi. Enfin, pour ceux d’entre vous qui sont déjà des lecteurs de littérature puritaine, ce guide est conçu pour vous orienter vers des études plus approfondies et vous présenter des puritains moins connus que vous ignorez peut-être.

Définition du puritanisme

Qui étaient les écrivains puritains ? Ce ne sont pas seulement les deux mille ministres qui furent expulsés de l'Église d'Angleterre par l'Acte d'Uniformité de 1662, mais aussi les ministres d'Angleterre et d'Amérique du Nord, du XVIe siècle au début du XVIIIe siècle, qui travaillèrent à la réforme et à la purification. l'Église et pour conduire les gens vers une vie pieuse conforme aux doctrines réformées de la grâce.

Le puritanisme est né de trois besoins : (1) le besoin de prédication biblique et d’enseignement d’une saine doctrine réformée ; (2) la nécessité d'une piété biblique et personnelle qui mettait l'accent sur l'œuvre du Saint-Esprit dans la foi et la vie du croyant ; et (3) la nécessité de restaurer la simplicité biblique dans la liturgie, les vêtements vestimentaires et le gouvernement de l'Église, afin qu'une vie d'église bien ordonnée favorise le culte du Dieu trinitaire tel que prescrit dans Sa Parole (The Genius of Puritanism, 11ff.).

Doctrinement, le puritanisme était une sorte de calvinisme vigoureux ; par expérience, c'était chaleureux et contagieux ; sur le plan évangélique, c'était agressif, mais tendre ; sur le plan ecclésiastique, elle était théocentrique et vénérable ; politiquement, il se voulait scripturaire, équilibré et lié par la conscience devant Dieu dans les relations entre le roi, le Parlement et les sujets ; culturellement, il a eu un impact durable au fil des générations et des siècles suivants jusqu'à aujourd'hui (Durston et Eales, éd., The Culture of English Puritanism, 1560-1700).

Comment profiter de la lecture des puritains

Permettez-moi de vous proposer neuf raisons pour lesquelles il vous aidera spirituellement de lire la littérature puritaine encore aujourd'hui :

1. Les écrits puritains aident à façonner la vie par l’Écriture. Les puritains aimaient, vivaient et respiraient les Saintes Écritures. Ils savouraient la puissance de l’Esprit qui accompagnait la Parole. Leurs livres sont tous centrés sur la Parole ; plus de 90 pour cent de leurs écrits sont des sermons reconditionnés qui sont riches en explications scripturaires. Les écrivains puritains croyaient sincèrement au caractère suffisant des Écritures pour la vie et la piété.

Si vous lisez régulièrement les puritains, leur centrage sur la Bible deviendra contagieux. Ces écrits vous montreront comment adhérer sans réserve au message de la Bible. Comme les puritains, vous deviendrez un croyant au Livre vivant, faisant écho à la vérité de John Flavel, qui a dit : « Les Écritures nous enseignent la meilleure façon de vivre, la plus noble façon de souffrir et la façon la plus confortable de mourir. »

Voulez-vous lire des livres qui vous plongent dans les Écritures et vous y maintiennent, façonnant votre vie par sola Scriptura ? Lisez les puritains. Lisez la série Soli Deo Gloria Puritan Pulpit. Pendant que vous lisez, améliorez votre compréhension en recherchant et en étudiant toutes les Écritures référencées.

2. Les écrits puritains montrent comment intégrer la doctrine biblique dans la vie quotidienne. Les écrits puritains le font de trois manières :

Premièrement, ils s’adressent à votre esprit. Conformément à la tradition réformée, les puritains refusaient d'opposer l'esprit et le cœur, mais considéraient l'esprit comme le palais de la foi. « Dans la conversion, la raison est élevée », a écrit John Preston.

Les puritains ont compris qu’un christianisme insensé favorise un christianisme insensé. Un évangile anti-intellectuel devient rapidement un évangile vide et sans forme qui ne dépasse jamais les « besoins ressentis », ce qui se produit aujourd’hui dans de nombreuses églises. La littérature puritaine est d’une grande aide pour comprendre le lien vital entre ce que nous croyons dans notre esprit et comment cela affecte notre façon de vivre. Justification by Faith Alone de Jonathan Edwards et The Instructed Christian de William Lyford sont particulièrement utiles à cet égard.

Deuxièmement, les écrits puritains confrontent votre conscience. Les puritains sont passés maîtres dans l’art de nous convaincre de la nature odieuse de notre péché contre un Dieu infini. Ils excellent dans l’art d’exposer des péchés spécifiques, puis de poser des questions pour imposer la conviction de ces péchés. Comme l’a écrit un puritain : « Nous devons utiliser le bâton de la vérité divine et battre tout buisson derrière lequel un pécheur se cache, jusqu’à ce que, comme Adam qui s’est caché, il se tienne devant Dieu dans sa nudité. »

La lecture dévotionnelle doit être à la fois conflictuelle et réconfortante. Nous grandissons peu si nos consciences ne sont pas quotidiennement aiguisées et dirigées vers le Christ. Puisque nous sommes enclins à courir vers les buissons lorsque nous nous sentons menacés, nous avons besoin d’une aide quotidienne pour être amenés devant le Dieu vivant « nus et ouverts aux yeux de celui à qui nous avons affaire » (Hébreux 4 : 12). En cela, les puritains excellent. Si vous voulez vraiment apprendre ce qu’est le péché et découvrir à quel point le péché est pire que la souffrance, lisez The Evil of Evils de Jeremiah Burroughs et The Sincere Convert and the Sound Believer de Thomas Shepard.

Troisièmement, les écrivains puritains engagent votre cœur. Ils excellent à nourrir l’esprit avec une substance biblique solide et à toucher le cœur avec une chaleur affectueuse. Ils écrivent par amour pour la Parole de Dieu, par amour pour la gloire de Dieu et par amour pour l’âme des lecteurs.

Pour des livres qui équilibrent magnifiquement la vérité objective et l’expérience subjective du christianisme ; des livres qui combinent, comme le disait J.I. Packer le dit : « une passion lucide et une compassion chaleureuse » (Ryken, Worldly Saints, x) ; des livres qui informent votre esprit, confrontent votre conscience et engagent votre cœur, lisez les Puritains. Lisez Practical Godliness de Vincent Alsop.

3. Les écrits puritains montrent comment exalter le Christ et voir sa beauté. Le puritain Thomas Adams a écrit : « Le Christ est la somme de toute la Bible, prophétisé, typifié, préfiguré, exposé, démontré, que l’on retrouve dans chaque feuillet, presque dans chaque ligne, les Écritures n’étant que pour ainsi dire les langes de la Bible. enfant Jésus. » De même, le puritain Isaac Ambrose a écrit : « Pensez au Christ comme à la substance, à la moelle, à l’âme et à la portée de toutes les Écritures. »

Les puritains aimaient le Christ et exaltaient sa beauté. Samuel Rutherford a écrit : « Réunissez la beauté de dix mille mondes paradisiaques, comme le jardin d’Eden ; mettez tous les arbres, toutes les fleurs, toutes les odeurs, toutes les couleurs, tous les goûts, toutes les joies, toutes les beautés, toutes les douceurs en un. Oh, quelle chose juste et excellente serait-ce ? 4. Les écrits puritains révèlent le caractère trinitaire de la théologie. Les puritains étaient animés par un profond sentiment de la gloire infinie d’un Dieu Trinité. Lorsqu’ils ont répondu à la première question du Catéchisme plus court, selon laquelle le but principal de l’homme était de glorifier Dieu, ils parlaient du Dieu Trinité : Père, Fils et Saint-Esprit. Ils ont pris la glorieuse compréhension de Jean Calvin de l’unité de la Trinité dans la Divinité et ont montré comment cela s’est traduit par l’élection, la rédemption et la sanctification de l’amour et de la grâce dans la vie des croyants. John Owen a écrit un livre entier sur la communion du croyant chrétien avec Dieu comme Père, Jésus comme Sauveur et le Saint-Esprit comme Consolateur. Les puritains nous enseignent comment rester centrés sur Dieu tout en étant extrêmement préoccupés par l’expérience chrétienne, afin que nous ne tombions pas dans le piège de la glorification de l’expérience pour elle-même.

5. Les écrits puritains vous montrent comment gérer les épreuves. Le puritanisme est né d’une grande lutte entre la vérité de la Parole de Dieu et ses ennemis. Le christianisme réformé a été attaqué en Grande-Bretagne, tout comme le christianisme réformé l’est aujourd’hui. Les puritains furent de bons soldats dans le conflit, endurant de grandes épreuves et souffrant beaucoup. Leurs vies et leurs écrits sont prêts à nous armer pour nos combats et à nous encourager dans nos souffrances. Les puritains nous enseignent combien nous avons besoin de l'affliction pour nous humilier (Deut. 8 : 2), pour nous apprendre ce qu'est le péché (Soph. 1 : 12) et comment cela nous amène à Dieu (Osée 5 : 15). Comme l’écrivait Robert Leighton : « L’affliction est la poussière de diamant avec laquelle le ciel polit ses bijoux. » Les puritains nous montrent comment le bâton d’affliction de Dieu est son moyen d’écrire plus pleinement l’image du Christ sur nous, afin que nous puissions participer à sa justice et à sa sainteté (Hébreux 12 : 10-11).

Si vous souhaitez apprendre à gérer vos épreuves d’une manière véritablement exaltant le Christ, lisez The Crook in the Lot : The Sovereignty and Wisdom of God Displayed in the Afflictions of Men de Thomas Boston.

6. Les écrits puritains expliquent la vraie spiritualité. Les puritains mettent l'accent sur la spiritualité de la loi, la guerre spirituelle contre le péché intérieur, la crainte enfantine de Dieu, l'émerveillement de la grâce, l'art de la méditation, l'horreur de l'enfer et la gloire du ciel. Si vous voulez vivre profondément en tant que chrétien, lisez Heart Treasure d’Oliver Heywood. Lisez les puritains avec dévotion, puis priez pour être comme eux. Posez des questions telles que : Suis-je, comme les puritains, assoiffé de glorifier le Dieu Trinité ? Suis-je motivé par la vérité biblique et le feu biblique ? Est-ce que je partage leur point de vue sur la nécessité vitale de se convertir et d’être revêtu de la justice du Christ ? Est-ce que je les suis autant qu’ils ont suivi le Christ ?

7. Les écrits puritains montrent comment vivre selon une foi holistique. Les puritains appliquent chaque sujet sur lequel ils écrivent à des « utilisations » pratiques – comme ils l’appellent. Ces « utilisations » vous propulseront dans une action passionnée et efficace pour le royaume du Christ. Leur propre vie quotidienne intégrait la vérité chrétienne à la vision de l’alliance ; ils ne connaissaient aucune dichotomie entre le sacré et le profane. Leurs écrits peuvent vous aider énormément à vivre une vie centrée sur Dieu dans tous les domaines, à apprécier ses dons et à déclarer tout « sainteté au Seigneur ».

Les puritains étaient d’excellents théologiens de l’Alliance. Ils vivaient la théologie de l’alliance, s’engageant eux-mêmes, ainsi que leurs familles, leurs églises et leurs nations, envers Dieu. Pourtant, ils ne sont pas tombés dans l’erreur de l’hyper-covenantalisme, dans lequel l’alliance de grâce devient un substitut à la conversion personnelle. Ils ont promu une vision globale du monde, une philosophie chrétienne totale, une approche holistique consistant à appliquer l’Évangile tout entier sur toute la vie, en s’efforçant de rendre chaque action conforme à Christ, afin que les croyants mûrissent et grandissent dans la foi. Les puritains ont écrit sur des sujets pratiques tels que comment prier, comment développer une véritable piété, comment diriger le culte familial et comment élever des enfants pour Christ. En bref, ils ont enseigné comment développer une « piété rationnelle, résolue et passionnée [qui est] consciencieuse sans devenir obsessionnelle, orientée vers le droit sans sombrer dans le légalisme et exprimant la liberté chrétienne sans aucune dérive honteuse vers la licence » (ibid., xii). ).

9. Les écrits puritains montrent comment vivre dans deux mondes. Les puritains disaient que nous devrions avoir le ciel « dans nos yeux » tout au long de notre pèlerinage terrestre. Ils ont pris au sérieux les passages du Nouveau Testament qui disent que nous devons garder « l’espoir de la gloire » devant nos esprits pour guider et façonner notre vie ici sur terre. Ils considéraient cette vie comme « le gymnase et le vestiaire où nous nous préparons pour le paradis », nous enseignant que la préparation à la mort est la première étape pour apprendre à vivre vraiment (Packer, Quest, p. 13).

Où commencer

Si vous commencez tout juste à lire les Puritains, commencez par The Fear of God de John Bunyan, Keeping the Heart de John Flavel et The Art of Divine Contentment de Thomas Watson, puis passez aux œuvres de John Owen, Thomas Goodwin et Jonathan Edwards. .

Whitefield avait raison : les puritains, bien que morts depuis longtemps, parlent toujours à travers leurs écrits. Leurs livres les louent encore aux portes. Comme l’écrit Packer : « Les puritains étaient les plus forts là où les protestants d’aujourd’hui sont les plus faibles, et leurs écrits peuvent nous apporter une aide plus réelle que ceux de tout autre corps d’enseignants chrétiens, passés ou présents, depuis l’époque des apôtres » (cité dans Hulse). , Réforme et renouveau, 44). Je suis entièrement d’accord. Je lis de la littérature chrétienne depuis plus de quarante ans et je peux dire librement que je ne connais aucun groupe d'écrivains dans l'histoire de l'Église qui puisse autant profiter à votre esprit et à votre âme que les puritains. Dieu a utilisé leurs livres pour me convertir quand j’étais adolescent, et il utilise leurs livres depuis pour m’aider à mieux comprendre le résumé de Jean-Baptiste sur la sanctification chrétienne : « Christ doit croître et je dois diminuer. »

Dans son soutien à Meet the Puritans, R.C. Sproul dit : « Le récent regain d’intérêt et d’engagement envers les vérités de la théologie réformée est dû dans une large mesure à la redécouverte de la littérature puritaine. Les puritains d’autrefois sont devenus les prophètes de notre époque. Ce livre est un trésor pour l’Église. Notre prière est donc que Dieu utilise Meet the Puritains pour vous inspirer à lire les écrits puritains. Laissez les puritains vous apporter la pleine assurance du salut et un style de vie de gratitude envers le Dieu Trinité pour son grand salut.

Vous voudrez peut-être également transmettre les livres Meet the Puritans et Puritains à vos amis. Il n'y a pas de meilleur cadeau qu'un bon livre. Je me demande parfois ce qui se passerait si les chrétiens ne consacraient que quinze minutes par jour à lire des écrits puritains. Sur une année, cela équivaudrait à lire une vingtaine de livres de taille moyenne par an et, sur une vie, 1 500 livres. Qui sait comment le Saint-Esprit pourrait utiliser un tel régime spirituel de lecture ! Cela marquerait-il le début d’un renouveau mondial ? Est-ce que cela remplirait à nouveau la terre de la connaissance du Seigneur d’une mer à l’autre ? C'est ma prière, ma vision, mon rêve. Tolle Lege : prenez et lisez ! Now that Jessica & her kids are coming over, my yard is FILLED with babies!!!!! Sharing this season of early motherhood with the ladies is just SO wonderful!!!!!!

I'm especially eager to get Barty & Beggy acquainted!!!!!! Abi & I both plan to raise Godly children, so there's no reason why Barty & Beggy shouldn't fall in love when they're older!!!!!

Speaking of, Jeb has the day off!!!! So Kimi & Jessica brought their husbands over!!!!!! I forgot to ask Abigail to invite HER husband - oh well!!!!!!!

But I certainly remembered to tell Abi to bring over her Christina!!!!!!! Having the world's most adorable baby girl named after you is SUCH a blessing!!!!!! Mini me is so sweet, and she's almost as pretty as her mother!!!!! Aunty Christie loves you, Chrissie!!!!!!!!

Two passions of mine are lists and family trees/next generations. One of my bigger gripes with the Fandom Wiki is that they will put absolutely everything to be a character category... aside from “next generation”...

So, I’m making my own list of next generation characters from all over the multiverse. Which is ungrateful, to be quite frank, due to how hard they are to find if you haven’t met them personally in a comic yet.

Which brings us to this post. Consider it a WIP as well as an ask for help. If you are as interested in next gen characters as I am, look at the shiny list! If you have read comics including next gen characters not listed here, please tell me the source and name so I can add them!

Hey, so did you guys know you can compress images into gen 1 pokemon sprites using this website?

It can be a little fiddly sometimes, and it's best if you shrink your image down to the early games' 56x56 pokemon sprite resolution first. But it's pretty interesting! I'll show some of my experimenting with it under "read more".

Here was my first attempt, using Monster Hunter Rise's icon for Tigrex (and shrinking a little smaller than 56x56):

Hey! It turned out pretty good! My expectation is that things that are bold and stylized without too much small/subtle detail will work best for this.

My 2nd one was a drawing of Bartholomew from Catz I did last year, which illustrates this a bit with what works and what doesn't:

This one could be cleaned up to look a bit nicer, but off the bat it doesn't look that great.

Here's Mizutsune, also from Monster Hunter Rise. I figured I'd have more luck there:

It... looks pretty crunchy. But this time, I actually DID go and do some cleaning up myself, and with a few tweaks it looks really nice!

Looking back at it, maybe the slightly smaller crop of Tigrex I used played to its advantage in the conversion.

Colour and shading will have a lot to do with how it will come out, because Teostra here has a lot of similar shades of different colours and few clear lines. As a result, he blends together:

But then he fits with the style of gen 1 the least so far anyways. This is also why I chose specifically Monster Hunter Rise: other MH games tend not to have outlines on their monster icons, just different colours.

If anyone else tries stuff out with this I'd love to see it ^^

Me and one of my friends wanted to do the Not So Berry Challenge by LilSimsie but we don’t have all the packs, so instead we just made our own. This is the Not So Fruity Challenge by Valix & Haven if anybody wants to play it:

Gen 1- Raspberry

Your entire life you’ve had a fixation on the arts, but were told it’s an impractical career path to go for. Even as an adult you kept your childish dream of being an artist, but pushed it to the side to fund your family. After years of keeping quiet about your desires, you finally make the changes you’ve always wanted.

Aspiration: Painter Extraordinaire

Traits: Childish, Self-Assured, Art Lover

Requirements:

-Master painting and mischief skill

-Make it to level 5 of the business job, before resigning and selling paintings for money

-Have at least two children

-Complete the Painter Extraordinaire aspiration

-Have the parent to your children be a failed relationship, get married in late adulthood/early elderhood to a separate sim

Gen 2- Blueberry

You’ve always felt the need to keep things under your control, which results in a lot of change. Growing up you could never stick to one hobby, and didn’t have much stability in your life from a young age due to money and family problems. You enjoy the fluidity of things and constant changes, which is what draws you to Sulani.

Aspiration: Nerd Brain

Traits: Child of the Ocean, Non-committal, Perfectionist

Requirements:

When you move you meet someone you want to spend your life with, but when you propose they reject you and end the relationship entirely. After the breakup, you spend time with yourself and your child. You meet someone new later on that you end up spending your life with, but never marry.

Aspiration: Extreme Sports Enthusiast

Traits: Glutton, Adventurous, Animal Enthusiast

Requirements:

-Have at least one cat/dog

-Master the Athlete career, and go into the Bodybuilder branch

-Master the rock climbing and snowboarding skills

-Climb Mt. Komorebi
