New Delhi in need of New Reform

The first stop on our worldwide journey exploring environmental issues facing international cities is New Dehli. Its population is increasing rapidly, now at an estimated 18 million, according to a 2011 census (1). This bustling metropolitan city is home to a host of environmental issues including water, noise, and air pollution, accompanied by a multitude of waste management issues.

Air pollution is one of the issues plaguing New Delhi. CNN caught their readers attention with the headline: “New Delhi is the most polluted city on Earth right now.” In the article, author James Griffiths writes that smog in certain areas are at levels five times higher than the United States Environmental Protection Agency deems as healthy (2). Protests have been held in hopes of raising awareness of the toxic smog plaguing their city (2). This infected air is causing serious health ramification for citizens living in New Delhi (2). Smog can lead to a host of health issues such as cancer, respiratory illnesses, and heart disease. Particles in the air manifest their way into the lungs, bloodstream, and can cause eye irritation. Living with such a high level of smog, a 999 rating on the Air Quality Index, is debilitating for the people of New Delhi (2). There are variant causes of this epidemic. The burning of trash, paddy fields, plastic, rubber, the emissions from the various modes of transportation, and dirty forms of power are piling up to create this toxic atmosphere (2). These methods of waste disposal are quick solutions to complex problems. Reducing the PM2.5 particles, particulate matter which are solids and liquids, in the atmosphere will require a change in lifestyle and legislation.

Clean water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource worldwide and New Delhi is no exception. The boom in population is accompanied by an increasing demand for clean water. Since the city is nestled between the Yamuna and the Ganges rivers they are responsible for keeping that source pure, which has proven difficult. Man-made factors such as domestic and industrial off loadings into the river coupled with intense dry seasons are parching the river (4). The citizens of New Delhi also harvest their water from the ground. However, this system is flawed as well. There has been a misuse of the ground pipes, unchecked by authority. The water situation in New Delhi is deteriorating. They are in need of new technologies, means, and methods in order to keep their expanding population hydrated.

Finally, the swelling population has created an overflow of waste. This waste includes hazardous, biomedical, and electronic waste. There is a demand for waste management but no current solution fit to alleviate the build up. The pollutants and foul living conditions are creating health problems, leading to more biomedical and hazardous waste.

Something has to be done about the problems accumulating in New Delhi. The government could pass sanctions, laws, implement taxes or subsidies but it simply is not happening. This would require a holistic examination of the way New Delhi is conducting daily life. From transportation to hospitals, waste management, sanctions on dumping into the rivers, and more, New Delhi is in need of reform in order to save their natural resources.
