Headcannons:

I feel like Vox would be the best out of the 3 in this scenario, as he's the least sadistic. Vox is a very protective lover, he's also compassionate and doting (behind closed doors). If Vox notices you (its really a matter of when not if because this man WILL notice) becoming overwhelmed or overstimulated he is gently guiding you away from the crowd to check on you, 'Are you okay?', 'do you want to leave?', 'is there something specific bothering you?' are FAQs (frequently asked questions) His way of dealing with the issue is removing you from the situation altogether- taking you back home, wether thats to your shared apartment or the Vee's headquarters depends on whichevers closest.

Scenario:

You and your fiance, Vox, are at a release event for the newest VoxTech drop. Vox is proudly harping about the newest Tech he’s developed, an even prouder arm around your waist; how could he not be proud with his pretty little love on his arm? (He calls you his ‘pretty little thing’, ‘little love’ no matter your gender or size) He’s so absorbed in his success that at first he doesn't notice the subtle tremble in your hands, or the way you curl into him as if trying to hide, or maybe the way you flinch at the bright camera flashes. But when you let out a barely audible whine Vox immediately turns to you, all ears.

Vox suddenly realizes how overstimulating this all must be; the flashing cameras, the loud and frantic crowd, the music in the background, the shouting, the rowdy demons who are protesting- oh god how could he have been so negligent?

Vox is immediately passing the reins over to Velvette (much to her dismay), and gingerly leading you through the crowd, towards the back door.

“It’s alright, lovely, just through here… There we go…”

His words are gentle, and the hands on your shoulders to guide you are 10x more so. He leads you out the back and to the limo, and once you’re sequestered away inside he just waits- He knows when you’re ready for touch you’ll initiate. He knows that for now, just the knowledge that someone is aware and looking after you is enough to help de-escalate the situation.

“There you go, doll, breathe yeah? In…. Out…. In…. Out… good job, love, doing so well for me”

Boyfriend!Valentino

Headcannons:

Val is definietly more of a 'what do you mean?' Kind of guy, or 'just breathe?', you know? We know from his workers (ahem angeldust ahem) that he isnt the most... understanding with weaknesses and the like. So- while I feel like Val's approach is a bit more 'deal with it by not dealing with it' than Vox's, it is still heartfelt for his wonderful gf/bf/partner. Even if he wont directly address it, Valentino is the type to try and reassure you through touch, wether thats what you need or not, thats what he's got because this man KNOWS he is brash and he doesnt want to make things worse.

Scenario:

You had walked to Valentino's studio to bring him homemade lunch after he was complaining about his imps being 'inconcievably incompetent'. You are now awkwardly standing backstage, out of sight, as he directs a particularily.... raunchy... scene. You are visibly uncomfortable with screams and various sounds of... mixed sensations.. echoing around the set, along with flashing lights and dizzying scents. Altogether they make an array of overstimulating inputs, and after setting down said lunch on a side bench, a pretty note tucked into the lip of the basket, you stumble back outside, trying to catch your breath. Val follows you shortly after, he caught sight of you from across the set.

Valentino carefully sits beside you, pulling you into his side.

"You alright there, babycakes?"

You shakily nod, but Val sees right through you. He sighs and kisses your temple as he absentmindedly rubs your shoulders.

"Thought I warned you 'bout my work hours, baby"

You slowly explain that you just wanted to surprise him with lunch and he smiles, kissing the inside of your wrist.

"Damn, sugar, shoulda started with that, hm? Why don't I pop in and grab it- then we can share it out here while you get your head back on."

Husband!Alastor

Headcanon:

This man. This. MAN. It can go one of two ways depending on where your relationship is with him- but in this you are married so- he would be so attentive- like. You would barely be feeling the 'oh hey, this is a lot' feeling and Al would pick up on it and knight in shining armor you away from it. Alastor just KNOWS. He has like a sixth sense when it comes to you. He is so finitly attuned to every fibre of your being that you cant even hide it from him. He just KNOWS. Like- you're in cannibal town (because be real y'all go on dates there all the time and Rosie adores you) and the children are being rowdy but 'its alright, i can manage-' oh and there's Susan- 'yes susan, we are married- no, no susan you cant see my ring im a bit worried you might try to eat my finger- No, really i insist-' oop and here comes Alastor, scooping you up with a charming grin, Rosie on his heels. 'Come along now darling, our dinner is waiting'

Scenario:

You and Alastor are in the hotels lobby, greeting guests for a party Charlie is throwing to 'encourage the inhabitants', Alastors hand is protectively on the small of your back like always. The arriving demons are a bit rowdy but nothing too bad- the real issue is the howling, rambunctious laughter coming from the bar, poor karoke all but screamed into the low quality microphone (much to Husk's annoyance), flashing strobe lights arouns the room turning the guests pink, green, blue, pink, green, blue, pink, green, blue-

"Dear?"

Careful fingers snap in front of your face- effectively lurching you out of your spiraling thoughts. You swallow thickly and look up at your husband, shaky smile plastered on your lips.

'Yes, Al?'

He frowns as he gaze flits from one eye to the other, then, his mind seemingly made up, he summons his shadow, scoops you up, and shadow travels back to you twos shared room.

"Oh lovely, this certianly wont do"

He dotes on you, rubbing your tense shoulders, kissing the crown of your head, murmuring sweet nothings to your skin as he lays you down in your shared, king bed. And later, once you're half asleep and content in his arms, he lovingly murmurs,

"No more of Charlie's so-called 'parties' for you, my sweet"

Why is the unity game engine bad

Basically, how I understand it, is that Unity is introducing a new pricing plan/model that takes effect January 1st, 2024, that based on certain thresholds of how many download’s and revenue a game has made in the last year, game developers will have to pay a certain flat rate PER INSTALL, which didn’t exist before. Many people reinstall games or the like after buying it once, so every reinstall counts as a new install, and charges the game company.

So many developers feel rather blindsided, because they feel this could fuck them over financially, they’ve got threeish months to decide what they want to do and many are talking about delays to jump ships. Those currently working on a project are likely to swap over to avoid this. While charity games won’t be affected and they’re trying to clarify things to make it sound better because the initial drop sounded even fucking worse, it feels really rough still.

Many devs have expressed their distaste for this, the devs of Cult of the Lamb, has stated they will delete the game come january 1st. VideoCult has put the game Rain World on a 50% sale and mentions de-listing it. Innersloth, the minds behind The Henry Stickmin Collection and Among Us has stated this would cause delays, and many developers will feel similarly. Even if they backpedal completely on this decision, so many are probably not gonna use it now, shooting themselves in the foot big time.

As Swindle comes off of hiatus, I (Artsy) would just like to say a few things.

I firstly just want to say a big personal thank you to everyone who’s been so patient during this hiatus. I’ve been dealing with a lot over the months that this comic hasn’t been updating and I’m still just keeping my head above water as it is. To those who are so empathetic, so kind, so understanding, thank you. You guys are a big reason why I continue working on this comic, and I am really excited for you to see where the story goes.

Lord knows that I’ve dedicated more than enough time complaining about the small but vocal group of people who have been rude - sometimes excessively so - to both Lolly and I as we work on this comic, and I’d like to not spend a terribly long time dwelling on it, here. I probably won’t mention if for a long while after this post. At the same time, it’s worth noting that we’ve done a lot to try to discourage and manage this behavior with... mixed results. We’ve blocked people for repeated rude behavior, we’ve banned people from our Discord server for rude behavior, we’ve closed our askbox during the hiatus, we’ve introduced an FAQ - and people have evaded being blocked by making throwaway accounts, and we’ve had an incident of an individual making a new Discord account to evade a ban, and people don’t read our FAQ. It’s all really frustrating.

I think, for now, at least, we’re going to only open our askbox to non-anons - though this won’t do too much to prevent throwaways, it’ll at least convolute the means through which people can harass us. So apologies to the shy but kind individuals who had been using anon peacefully, maybe sometime we’ll open it back up again.

Additionally, I’ll like to just once again ask for anyone who hasn’t to check out FAQ, please. It’s in our pinned post for a reason.

Somewhat related to that - mostly that it’s something that’s been covered in the FAQ, is that I’ve noticed an increasing number of people who have been saying they discovered the comic via re-uploads on tiktok and pintrest.

And. Wow. That hurts. It hurts to know, to think about. I know it’s inevitable, trust me, I know this is just the inevitable result of posting anything on the internet, but god, it sucks.

I don’t know how many of you following this blog are artists, but it’s a big long topic that I don’t really have the space or patience to lay out for all of you in this post - this is art theft. We do not allow, we say it right in our FAQ point-blank, we do not allow people to reupload the comic elsewhere. Dubs are fine, again, we’ve covered this, they’re transformative, they offer an experience unique to just reading the comic. But un-voiced reuploads that do nothing but present the comic in a slideshow? That’s stealing. It’s hurtful, and it’s wrong. Both Lolly and I have dealt many times with our work being stolen and we’ve made our stances on reuploads of our work pretty clear on our own blogs.

Please, if you see someone doing this, report them. The only “official” accounts for the comic are this blog and our promotional Instagram page, swindle.comic. If an account is uploading the comic, un-dubbed, they do no have permission to do so, and they need to be reported.

I really don’t expect this to be the last time I have to say something like this or about this, because I know that this comic is going to take a long time to complete and so we’ll always have newcomers who can’t reasonably be asked to sift through the entire blog for posts like these. But for now, I hope it helps keep the interaction with this comic more respectful. I don’t think the people who do this stuff even realize that their behavior literally makes this comic more draining to work on than it should be (which leads to more burnout and hiatuses) - or I wouldn’t be making posts like this at all, because if they did know, they therefore wouldn’t care, and telling them would be pointless. So I hope this serves as a decent reminder that we’re human beings, and we and our work deserves to be respected.

If this were real life I’d smile patronizingly and say “I guess!” It really throws antisemites off. It really makes them itch. It’s edging without finishing. Delightful.

I’m Jewish (not religious, halachically) and a leftist. I don’t have a bio but I do have an FAQ where I clarify I’m an antifascist. That said, I don’t like having people have preconceived notions re: my intent based on bio info. If you want to know who I am you have to work for it or read the blog. I know you’re trying to figure out whether I am a gallows humor enjoyer or a literal sincere fascist so you can modulate your expectations accordingly, so I get it, but I’ve always found it a little invasive when people ask for particulars of my person. It’s such a symptom of liberal atomization of identity particulars. I’m happy to give them, as a chronic yapper who’s so isolated she’s become a little self-obsessed, but it still rubs me the wrong way in theory. Always assume someone online is the last person on earth who ‘ought’ to be talking about this that or the other thing. It’s healthier imo. You don’t need to know what my genital situation is in order to know that I will always side with my trans friends, for example. If it’s not evident enough from the content of my blog I’m not doing a good job.

Besides, it would sound like I’m making stuff up online for attention if I came out and gave my whole story right off the bat. I won’t get into it here (as I said, boundaries) but I’m not only Jewish and American. I’m also German-like-German-with-a-citizenship-not-just-from-Wisconsin (through my Dad). My story is as wild as a basic bitch white girl’s could be (as far as fashstudy goes).

That said, as I go over in the FAQ, I mostly study the fash because there’s something wrong with my brain. While the particulars of my bloodlines are the reasons people might assume my interest, my blog is mostly is due to the fact that God/G*d gives his most socially repellent hyperfixations to his most vivacious little autists. Re-Re-Introductory Post

Hi! My name is Lucas (Luc or Lux works just fine!). I use he/him pronouns. I’m 26, and I’ve been writing for well over a decade now. I’ve had this blog since 2015, and I have no plans on leaving any time soon. I enjoy talking about my projects, my current character hyperfixation, and offering any nuggets of wisdom my years of writing may have produced.

I write fantasy of all flavors. While urban fantasy is my leaning, I have a couple high fantasy projects as well. My favorite thing to do is something I affectionately call frankengenres. (Perhaps a misnomer, but a fun word.) My casts are all queer of some flavor. I adore worldbuilding, with fondness for finding a reason to add wings to characters (leftover from my obsession with angels and demons), and building all new god pantheons. I like to play with concepts in my writing like morality, and trauma both personal and generational, and healing, and turning into creatures, and anything else I might be processing between therapy sessions. All of my writing is tagged under my writing, and usually the character name/project name.

My big projects I’m likely to talk about are Personal Demons, Ichor (godsuckers), Dragonmarked, or Give Me Ur Eyes (temporary title). My minor projects are many, but the ones I can remember at the moment are the Warped wip, the polyam supernatural wip, the witchy nun story, the twisted trio, opulent dreamer, tons of aus and such, and technically Lev n Fax, tho that one is “complete” in theory. Might edit it up one day if I end up self-publishing PD, since it (and a few of my minor projects) are in the same universe. Also, me and @fragmentedink wrote Hell to Pay as a collab au, and we’re in theory working on the second generation right now.

If you find my old introductory post, you’ll see that I said I had dyslexia, but in January of 2020 I went to get fully diagnosed and it turns out I just have severe ADHD that was making it hard for me to read. I was supposed to get diagnosed with autism via a specialist for adults and I... did not follow through.

I do ask you don’t tag me in tag games. I have really bad anxiety, and even though I know no one gets mad that I don’t fill them out, I still stress an awful lot when I can’t fill them out. I just don’t have the time or the energy.

My askbox is always open though! I take prompts constantly, and you’re free to ask me anything. I tend to get on at night more than daytime when it comes to asks, but I’ll get around to them eventually!

That form question is irrelevant for 99% of people, it's more so that I'm not trying to chase up missing gifts over a month after the upload date... Running/ setting this up last year ended up being moderately more effort than I anticipated. Which is fine! I'm glad so many people were interested!

But, I ended up begging for assistance and @koreplus very kindly became a second point of contact. However, I am just *generally* not very organised, so it's to help mediate some of MY stress.

Are the forums really completely kaput? It’s absolutely bizarre to me that no large-scale backup or archive was made, in the decade(?) the website existed.

(For context: I got a question from @krixwell​ about the blog’s spoiler policy a week or so before the pause, voicing some worries about potential spoilers in asks. The tl;dr is that I’m alright with some minor spoilers - for example, asks about what my Homestuck Title would be, or jokes about the weird structure that the comic seems to take(?) later on)

We’ll see! I really enjoy the discussions brought up by asks, and I’ve had a lot of fun with Titles that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I’ve been fine so far, but I agree that if I do get burned, I’ll reconsider. 

I did dodge a bullet here, admittedly! Mind you, I think if I’d noticed this before the Vriska reveal, I’d probably just have been smug about puzzling it out beforehand. 

Vriska decides to beat the Noble Circle at their own game, and becomes Vah’ru-Ee’skaie, eldritch horror of the 8th Dimension. 

Gotta give the Homestuck Forums props for picking these troll names - there’s so much going on with each of them. 

She is constantly Spaced out. Mind you, half of all Sburb Players have their heads in the clouds!

This relates to my theory that Vriska can only make people do things they already wanted, on some level, to do. 

Hence, Karkat must have wanted to keep talking to her. Honestly, the idea that he still wanted to insult her is a pretty safe bet, and I think that’d definitely be enough for Vriska to work with, if this is indeed how her power operates.

Oh, that is a challenge and a half. The trolls all look really cool, with appearances that reflect their personalities really well.

However, this is an undertaking I’d rather take with all twelve troll designs at once. Come back to me when we have all twelve sprites!

Even if the the ‘games for girls’ thing was expanded on later, it’d be hard to prove it wasn’t a Hussie retcon. I love Karkat, but he’s a shitty teen, and it wouldn’t even be the worst thing he said today.

True. Homestuck - the comic itself - has just one writer, though, so we shouldn’t be dealing with any Expanded Universe shenanigans. 

I guess Hussie could answer differently every time you ask a given question, or write multiple conflicting backstories for a character, but that would make the comic sort of hard to engage with or enjoy.  

I wouldn’t say it’s completely cut-and-dry that canon Midnight Crew implies canon Problem Sleuth. For one thing, the Midnight Crew isn’t even canon to Problem Sleuth! 

I never considered that Godhead Pickle Inspector could actually be an imaginary entity, only ‘omnipotent’ in one sphere of reality. That would make sense, given his origins. It would be fun if he was the source of the dream magic which allows Jade to grow extra arms, since that’s pretty close to how Imaginationland works.

Intro:

Vivid, she/her. Christian, but very much struggling with faith/religion. I made this blog to help me along that journey.

I'm autistic, and in addition to that being a large part of my life and identity, I feel like that really affects the way I connect to my faith. (The latter is not necessarily in an entirely good way - as I said, I'm struggling with faith in general.)

I'm also aromantic and asexual, which has led to me feeling somewhat alienated from many Christian spaces. There's also the fact that I was brought up in conservative circles that grew to strongly clash with my own beliefs and values.

Basically, I'm dealing with feelings of spiritual isolation and anxiety, trying to reconcile my belief system, and hoping to heal my relationship with religion and God.

THE BEST FOR YOU (PART 2)

Marc was different. He had been different for some time now. You had been blaming it on Khonshu, the god who had saved his life at the cost of Marc having to serve him. Now, Marc was having to fight Khonshu’s fights, being dragged across the world, coming back to you more battered and bruised than you had ever seen him before. He was constantly exhausted, collapsing on the bed when he finally got home. You almost never saw him anymore. It almost felt like you were more like strangers than a couple these days. 

It weighed heavily on your heart. You had thought that you and Marc would be together forever. Perhaps never married, you weren’t sure Marc was the marrying type. But you always thought it would be the two of you. Now though…You weren’t so sure. 

And, as you saw notification after notification from a woman named Layla pop up on his phone, you began to realize why he might not be as close to you as before. The messages coming through were innocent, but…When you saw the smiley face emoji beside her name, knowing that Marc was never the type of person to use emojis at all, it left you with a sinking feeling in your stomach. 

“What’s on your mind?” Marc asked. No term of endearment. No baby. Not even a hint of love in his voice. Maybe you were strangers now. 

You looked up at him. Water dripped from his hair—had he taken a shower? He used to always invite you to take a shower with him, even if you didn’t always agree. He loved to wiggle his eyebrows at you, tug you close to him, whisper in your ear that it was very important to save water. 

Clearing your throat, you glanced back at the phone, raising it for him to see. Your heart sunk a little when some of the color drained from his face. “Someone named Layla was texting you. I was about to find you to let you know, seemed important.”

“Oh.” He held the phone tightly when you handed it to him. “We’ve started working together. She…Her father was one of the people who I…It’s—”

“Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to explain anything to me,” you said. Except, you kind of wanted him to continue. To confirm your suspicions. You knew Marc would be the type to cheat, at least not physically, but you could tell his heart no longer lied with you. 

“Nothing’s going on between me and Layla.”

“I never said there was.” You glanced back down at your lap. “But, I do have a question for you.”

Marc gave a curt nod. “Shoot.”

“I’m not good enough for you, aren’t I? Not anymore, anyways.”

When you glanced back up, he was staring down at his feet. And that was all you needed to know. 

“It’s okay. I kind of saw this coming, if I’m being honest.” You rose to your feet, stepping closer to him. You took his face in your hands, lifting his head so he would look at you. “I mean, it does still hurt. But, I can’t make you stay somewhere that doesn’t make you happy.”

“You used to make me happy. I used to only feel happy when I was with you,” Marc said. It was hard to look into his tear-filled eyes, but you did. You knew you would probably never look into them again. “It’s just…”

“You don’t have to explain. Really, I mean it. Some people just grow apart. That’s life. I won’t fault you for that, because neither of us are at fault.”

Marc shook his head, a tear slipping down his cheek. “We didn’t drift apart, though,” he said. And you knew that was true. You just hated for him to feel bad. You hated for him to feel guilty. Even as he had been breaking your heart, you didn’t want to break his. “I pushed you away. I’ve been pushing you away for a long time. I-I never wanted you to be hurt, and I knew that being Khonshu’s avatar—”

“It’s okay, hon—Marc. It really is. I—” But you couldn’t keep lying anymore. Not to yourself, and not to him. Shaking your head, you asked, “Did you know? Did you always know that you were going to leave?”

“I never wanted to leave you,” Marc said. “But so much has happened. So much has changed. And I can’t let you get hurt.”

And you hated yourself as you asked, “But, you can let Layla get hurt?”

“Layla can take care of herself.”

You tried to ignore the edge in his voice. The sort of protectiveness he used to hold towards you. “And I can’t.”

“It’s not—”

“That’s alright. I mean, it’s not a lie. I’d probably break all of the bones in my hand if I threw a punch. I’d sooner drop a gun before I could shoot it. If Layla’s working with you, clearly she can fight. She’s not someone you have to look after, to protect. She’s capable where I’m not. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought it up. She doesn’t have anything to do with this.” You cleared your throat again. “I’m sorry things are ending like this. I’ll just get my things and go.”

“Y/N, you don’t have to leave—”

“It’s your place. Your name on the lease. If anyone should leave, it’s me.” You took a step back, letting go of him. You turned to find your bag, grabbing some of the things you had strewn about up. “I will miss you, you know.”

“I’ll miss you, too.” Marc said. He sniffled slightly. “And I love you. I’ll always love you.”

You paused for a moment. “You don’t have to. Love me always, I mean.”

“I know, but I will.”

You didn’t say anything more, not wanting to argue anymore. And neither did Marc. By the time you finished shoving your belongings into a bag, he was gone. Sighing, you left the apartment, hoping that he would be okay. Because, even if Marc broke your heart, you still only wanted the best for him.

i have to admit. my first reason for doing this was to spite my brain because it wouldn’t write. so, instead, i made this. 

so here. 160+ links. gathered from a million questionable google searches, and some more crawling through mobile chrome tabs for 11 hours. anyways, enjoy!

where to write!

some popular platforms:

google docs is my choice for writing. it’s free, auto saves, you can access your stuff on mobile, pc, tablet, etc., and great for multi person collabs + link sharing. but, you need internet to use it, and for big documents (upwards of 55k words) it takes a while to load on pc, and editing on mobile is damn near impossible. 

scrivener is great too, and has the binder, which is great for organizing stuff. however, the mac version is way, way ahead of the pc in terms of updated versions. i mean, the pc version is still useable. and, it’s pretty expensive at $45 usd. 

microsoft word is really popular, and used pretty much everywhere. there’s templates and you can save documents in different formats, and compatible with other microsoft office programs too. it’s also a bit complicated at the start, but tbh most software is gonna be like that. sort of in the same boat as scrivener, as in, it costs money. usually a subscription, but if you decide to buy it flat out, it’s even more pricy, but def worth it imo.

of course, you could just type into your notes app, or ao3, or a tumblr draft post, but let’s not-

spotify, youtube premium, and tidal are all great for listening to music. all of them, except for the free version of spotify, have a subscription. 

but maybe music isn’t your thing! here’s some more stuff:

jot down ideas when you get them! 

don’t force yourself to write, or else you’ll burn out. and that’s never good. 

have snacks and drinks handy if you’re going to be writing for an extended amount of time. even if you’re not, your brain needs fuel to run.

so, drinks like tea and water. snacks that aren’t oily/greasy or crumbly (i mean, do you really want that on your paper or keyboard?), 

and on that note, for god’s sake use the bathroom frequently. 

if you have difficulty concentrating, get something like a fidget cube or something to help. or take a nap.

if you don’t think your writing is good at first, just keep. writing. it’s a skill, and the more you write, the better you’ll get.

beta readers and outside opinions are very helpful. and please, never antagonize them first. 

first drafts are messy! and done > perfect the first time around.

Inklings Challenge FAQ

(Or at least, what I imagine people might want to ask.)

What is the Inklings Challenge?

The Inklings Challenge is an invitation for Christian science fiction and fantasy writers to create stories that fit the Christian worldview. The event runs from October 1st to October 21st, 2021. Participants are divided into three separate groups and challenged to write a story that fits the assigned topic.

Portal Fantasy: Stories where someone from the real world explores a new world

Space Travel: Stories about traveling through space or exploring other planets

Team Tolkien

Secondary World Fantasy: Stories that takes place in an imaginary realm that’s completely separate from our world

Time Travel: Any story where the characters get to travel in time

Team Chesterton

Intrusive Fantasy: Stories where the fantastical elements intrude into the real world

Technology: Stories exploring how a particular technological advance could affect people right here on current or future Earth

These teams will be assigned at random on October 1st, 2021. Writers are then encouraged to write a story before the deadline on October 21st.

In addition, the stories should fit one of seven provided Christian themes. These themes are meant to serve as inspiration, and to provide a uniquely Christian flavor to the stories.

What if I don’t finish by the deadline?

Post it anyway! In the original version of this challenge, Tolkien never finished his story! The idea is to create whatever you can, and we welcome unfinished stories. Show us what you’ve accomplished. If you like, you can also post the finished version at a later date, and I’ll make an effort to share it on the main blog.

What if I finish early?

Post it! I’ll share it to the main blog, and it’ll provide inspiration for other writers. If you’re feeling ambitious, create more stories within your assigned topics, or pick another theme to explore.

What if my story isn’t any good? Do I have to post?

No one’s judging this. This is a fun challenge, not a contest, and I hope that it will inspire people to push past that voice of criticism and just share whatever they come up with. If you really don’t want to post what you’ve created, no one’s going to force you to, but I hope you’ll join in the fun.

If you just plain don’t have enough to post–say, if the month gets away from you and you wind up with half a sentence–you’re always welcome to keep working on it and post something more substantial at a later date. You could also make a post describing what you'd have liked to do with the story, or what you plan to do as you continue to write it.

Can I use characters or settings from my other stories?

Absolutely! This can be a great way to expand your story world. As long as the story fits your assigned topic, you’re welcome to use any settings or characters you might have created for other works. However, it’d be nice if the story you write can stand alone, so readers can understand it without any knowledge of other works in the world.

What if I don’t like my team’s assigned topics?

I encourage everyone to at least try to come up with a story that fits one of their assigned topics. That’s the challenge portion of The Inklings Challenge–it’ll stretch your imagination and get you to work outside of your comfort zone. The categories are broad, and you should be able to come up with an angle that interests you.

However, if there’s a particular topic that calls to you in another team’s options, you can stretch the definitions to make it fit your own topic. What’s to say the portal in the portal fantasy can’t lead to a future cyberpunk universe dealing with new technological advances? Explore a secondary world of elves in space if you want to. Be creative!

Do I have to write an allegory or include religion?

You are welcome to write an allegory or to explicitly explore religion if you want to, but you’re certainly not required to. The goal is merely to write stories that fit within the Christian worldview, not to preach.

What if I can’t think of an idea?

I’ll provide (completely optional) prompts in other posts as we prepare for the contest. I can’t promise anything spectacular or brilliant or even helpful, but I hope something within the lists can provide a spark of inspiration.

How do I incorporate the theme?

The themes list is meant to serve as inspiration, to help you think of possible directions for your plot or characters. Your story doesn’t need to be some grand, beautiful exploration of all the theological implications of the concept; just touch upon some aspect of the theme. I’ve chosen most of them for their storytelling potential. For example, Sacrifice lends itself to stories of heroes enduring challenges for the sake of others, while Mystery suggests the wonder and curiosity of exploring a new world, and Humility provides great potential for character arcs–pride goeth before the fall, after all. Be creative and let God inspire you. You’re also more than welcome to write your story first, and then decide which of the themes it fits; the categories are broad enough that I’d be very surprised if anyone could write a story that didn’t fit at least one of them.

WaniKani, the glorious, glorious site that’s been a permanent tab on my computer for years. Boy, where do I even begin to describe the wonder that is this kanji studying website and its community? Actually, other than the very basics I’ll probably stick to mentioning the things I personally love about it and let you explore the ins and outs of the page on your own, because the WK community site already has loads and loads of guides, support, and tips ‘n tricks for you if you want to give it a go and need someone to point you in the right direction. Oh, and then there’s also the official knowledge guide which includes FAQ, of course. Heaps of information on there. Totally recommend it. 🐊🦀✨

“Everything you need to know about waiting a really long time for your precious reviews”

“Okay, okay, we get it. But, what is WaniKani?” Ah. Right. Well, first things first, in Japanese ワニ (wani) means crocodile, or alligator, and カニ (kani) means crab. The mascot for the page is the almighty Crabigator that is more or less worshipped by the community. If you venture into the weird parts of it, that is. But if you’re not into that stuff you can just. Y’know. Forget everything I just wrote and pretend it doesn’t exist. 

Through WK you get to memorise both kanji and vocabulary containing the kanji you learn. 2,000 kanji may sound like intimidatingly many squiggles and lines to learn, but nope! WK’s got your back! Instead of memorising each and every line, you learn using radicals. Suddenly you’ll look at a kanji and see three radicals instead of 10+ strokes. Magic ✨ You’ll also learn the different pronunciations/readings of the kanji, and when you learn new vocabulary you’ll have a bunch of example sentences of varying difficulty help you see the word in its proper context.

The learning process is separated into different levels (60 in total), each containing a certain amount of radicals, kanji, and vocabulary. There is a “Lessons” button for learning new stuff, and a “Reviews” button for reviewing the stuff you’ve previously learnt. Easy peasy, right? 🍋

Welp, that’s essentially the gist of it. I’ll now introduce some of the things I love about WK real quick:

First few levels for free - this way you’ll get a feel for how WK works while at the same time learn some basic kanji. Then you’re free to choose which type of membership you’d like to purchase (if any). (It’s so worth it though, if you ask me)

SRS: spaced repetition system - to optimise learning based on how human memory works. Greatly appreciated by my psychology major brain 

The design, art, layout - clean, colourful, pretty, simplistic, professional, and easy to use only begins to describe it! Besides, how could we possibly hope to learn anything at all if the page weren’t aesthetically pleasing, amirite 

Humour - good god there’s nothing worse than really dry textbook material. How about some really dry humour instead? Believe me, there are some GEMS in the example sentences

Game-like - the level up system makes you want to keep going back for more so you can level up. It’s sort of like that TED-talk about the Super Mario Effect: you’re so engrossed in the “I want to level up!” mindset that you forget that you’re actually learning heaps of useful kanji in the process

Community - whether you want someone to answer your questions about those pesky particles, want to laugh at extremely disproportionate manga drawings people have found while reading, want to practice chatting in Japanese with fellow learners, want a morale boost by checking out some wholesome doodles and gifs, lowkey want to join a Crabigator cult or want to join a Japanese book club - the WK community is the place to go. I just wanted to learn some kanji, man. Who would’ve thought I’d make actual, solid friendships? Aw. Wholesome  

And last but not least:

The Tofugu guys who run the show - accommodating, kind, funny, professional, and quick to reply if something’s up. You see them lurking around in the community posts sometimes. You should totally consider checking out their articles about Japan and Japanese learning over on their blog, Tofugu. Super helpful! Or their podcast about the same stuff. All good times over there. (One of my personal faves is probably the one about ようかい.) They’re also currently working on developing a Japanese-learning-online-textbook-type of thing (...nailed it) called EtoEto. does yui have stockholm syndrome in every game and every route? does she actually love them and do they love her?

I can only comment on Laito’s route since I know his better, but I don’t think that Yui has stockholm syndrome in every route. I think the one she definitely has it is HDB. In Laito’s HDB route (and the others that I’ve played), she’s never allowed to do anything on her own, and if she does, she’s always being watched. I’ve always said it on this blog that HDB is a “closed system,” and in Laito’s route, Yui is especially isolated. I’ve written about Yui’s isolation in this analysis here, but since that’s the longest one I’ve done, here’s a snippet from that and more under the cut!

Just having your upbringing and core beliefs being taken out from under you is a very terrifying situation. For many people, religion (and core beliefs in general) gives a sense of comfort to a person. In Kanato’s route, Yui relates her rosary to Teddy (which Kanato actually understands that). Practicing a religion (in a non-hateful way) is a constant in many people’s lives, and brings a sense of community and well-being. By Laito not letting Yui enter a church anymore, that sense of safety was stripped away from Yui even further. However, she still had her god and religion to believe in. But Laito has even destroyed that with Yui by isolating her so much from the world and gaslighting her to the point of her questioning everything. It’s slowly making her paranoid and question her own being. Yui still doesn’t know what Laito means by making her “fall,” and that scares her more. He’s been vaguely transparent this whole time. What a paradox this man is.

There are many reasons why Yui is so vulnerable in HDB that makes her susceptible to stockholm syndrome (many of which is stated in that snippet above). Despite Laito being the reason why she wants to kill herself and why she’s depressed, he’s the only one that’s looking after her and socializing with her (he’s the only constant she has in her life at that moment). I’ve made a comment that the brothers don’t really show up in Laito’s HDB route, which adds to the social isolation Yui is going under.

Laito’s really the only person she’s in contact with in HDB. In contrast to MB+, she interacts with a lot of characters outside of Laito. She’s not as physically isolated anymore (from what it seems) and Laito’s going through his own issues, making it hard for him to keep tabs on Yui sometimes. But I don’t think it’s stockholm syndrome, especially in comparison to HDB.

I don’t think Laito legitimately loves Yui in HDB. However, I think that he begins to open himself up and start loving her bit by bit as MB+ goes on and he’s able to learn to love (more of that in another analysis coming up too! I’ll link it here when it’s posted :)).
