Why Google ads is making me consider ad blocking now.

Dear hypothetical google developer or executive reading this possibly because a developer or some-one else on break found it and it went up to the chain to you, I really have tried to be good and help support creators somewhat by keeping ads on and not blocking them with ad block. I don't mind some ads if it keeps the service free and gets people paid. What I do have issue with is what finally happened today. I had the 50th advert this week for one of those crappy mobile games and it was the normal crappy mobile game style of advert (the one where the hero has to fight enemies of the right level to level up, you know the ones). Now earlier this month I started getting these and it was fine for a bit, ok not had any of these for a while so I'll endure a few. Then it was more and more apparent they were AB tested adverts. For those who don't know AB testing is when companies put out a number of different adverts with minor changes then keep iterating to get the advert that gets most engagement (E.G. does having the character in red trousers Vs blue make a person more likely to click the advert). So after a few days I started blocking the adverts using google system to tell google I didn't want to see those ads anymore. But because they're AB tested ads I blocked the A ad so then got the B ad then got the iteration of the ad so got the C and D version. So I blocked them too. Then I got the E and F versions. This carried on until today. I got another ad, pressed to block it as not being interested and Google ads options wouldn't let me block the ad. That's right I've apparently blocked so many of these shitty mobile game AB testing ads Google won't let me block anymore so I can't escape them. Google you're meant to be one of the most advanced tech companies out there, how can you still not get what ads I actually want to see with all the data you've collected? I've even literally gone through the selector system to choose ad categories I'm most interested in and you still get it wrong. Why the hell should I be good and keep ad block off when even telling you what ads I want doesn't work and when I block ads using your own system it don't just results in more of the almost exact same ad for the same product but it results in you then stopping me blocking ads because I've blocked too many according to your system or some such crap. Sort your shit out.

Maybe ask people what ads they want, hell I'd love a selection of film trailers for movies big and small coming out but no I have to get 50+ crappy mobile game ads that are literally misrepresentative of the games themselves to begin with.

can't believe yt thinks everyone will just accept the way ads have been increasing, like... tbh i was okay w tuning out for even as long as 30 seconds, when there was only one ad per video, but when i started getting an ad every five minutes, i got an ad-blocker SO fast.

and then after some months, yt blocked me from playing videos bc i was using an ad-blocker, so i disabled that one and got A BETTER AD-BLOCKER.

devs making these ad-blockers, i love you so much and so does everyone else. you're saving us from so much harassment.

You know how Google now gives tons of ads as the first results when you search, and sometimes gives nothing fully relevant to what you searched at all?

Solutions:

1. The quickest, switch to Bing or DuckDuckGo which so far don't use the direct you to ads method as much, and should give results about as relevant as before Google went to shit. There will still be ad results, but the results will be somewhat closer to what you were actually searching for

2. Please check out searx.space and just try ANY of the linked search sites, bookmark this searx link or any of its search sites that work for you. I found search.ononoki.org through it, and ononoki is life changing to me. Suddenly I search and get an actual answer for the top result (not an ad thats only semi related to my search terms), and I get a ton of other results that actually are about the terms I searched, and I get a list of suggested search terms that may give me things I'm looking for. I tried looking up specific method language learning materials on here, and got Exactly the kind of sites I actually needed (and the books I was looking for but needed to find again) whereas on Google last week I couldn't find Any of that information. I was also able to sort by if I was looking for sites or specific files! I'm begging you if you want good relevant search results that actually give you something you're trying to find, consider checking out the search sites linked on searx.space

i got a notification this morning saying there are new features for ads built into android. they present it in a way that's like "oh it's so much better now, you'll get ads that are 'useful' and personalized for you!"

what this really means, as im sure you can tell, is that they're just giving more of your personal info to advertisers

so if you got this and don't know how to go back to change your settings, or just want to check to make sure you're ok, here are some steps to get to googles ad settings

1. search "ads" in settings (duh)

2. select the ads option under settings for google

3. it'll bring you to this ads centre screen; go to ad privacy, although it's also a good idea to delete your advertising id if you haven't already done so

4. select "off" for ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. the description for ad topics is "android notes topics of interest based on the apps you've used recently and how frequently you use them", for app-suggested ads it says "apps you use can also determine what you like based on how you use them" and for ad measurement it says "apps you use can ask android for information to help them measure the performance of their ads. android lets apps collect limited types of data" and then provides a hyper link for information on ad privacy on android

hopefully this benefits someone! you can't always be 100% secure against data collection and selling, but you absolutely can do everything in your power to minimize it
