a snippet from the short fic i'm writing based on jily approaching regulus (it's supposed to be a 5+1 thing but i'm still figuring it out sjsjsk)

Somewhere between then and now, barely tolerating each other for their friends’ sake turned into being attached at the hip. Where one Slytherin — or Ravenclaw — went, chances were a Gryffindor was right behind them.

Pandora, Mary and Peter were the first to get friendly in their shared class — Divination. The three were inseparable since then, making jokes nobody else understood and sharing gossip they had heard from different students. On more than one occasion the three of them had forced the rest of their friends to listen as they explained whatever drama was going on. Barty and Sirius had strangely bonded over the many detentions they had served together. They were always play-fighting and getting into trouble with Filch on their smoke breaks. Sirius had even turned to Barty for help on orchestrating some big pranks, which had James labeling him a traitor and threatening to take away his Marauder's map rights. Remus and Evan, of all people, seemed to have found some common ground, probably pining about their crushes who spend every other night cleaning McGonagall’s office.

And as Dorcas was busy snogging Marlene in every corner of the castle, that left Regulus caught between the Gryffindor Golden Couple, Lily Evans and James Potter.

And even though he would much rather be anywhere else, Gryffindors were known to be stubborn for a reason. No matter how much Regulus had tried to stay away at first — only because he wanted to give the couple some privacy and definitely not because he was hopelessly in love with both of them — both Lily and James were insistent on pulling him back in.

He had given up trying at some point, grateful just to be sitting next to them while at Hogsmeade or studying with them in the library. On more than one occasion Regulus had feigned ignorance on a topic in hopes that Lily or James would spare some time to explain it to him in depth, and they had done so each and every time with no complaints. And Regulus felt despicable for using their good nature in order to fuel his fantasy of being included in something he was clearly not a part of.

While James and Lily might not be aware of what Regulus was playing at, his friends definitely were if Barty’s smug looks and Dorcas’ pitying glances were anything to go by. It served as a reminder that this… thing he had built up in his head, this delusion of their relationship was going to get Regulus hurt one day and drive a wedge between them that would leave Regulus completely shattered. And he didn't know if anyone was going to be left to pick up the pieces when it happened.

Is saying that Will Solace is a Hufflepuff and Nico Diangelo is a Slytherin slightly stereotypical? Sure maybe it is. Does that make me change me mind about it being true? No. No it doesn’t. (The secondary house for both of them is Gryffindor.)
