some fics i've liked lately

it's been a weird year. when i made this list of recs back in january i fully intended it to become a monthly thing, but life happened and then i guess it just kept happening. in early 2023 things were ramping up in my new career, i was practicing and playing a lot with my band to prepare for our first show, i was settling into dealing with depression and anxiety with medication, i was getting over a miserable breakup. then i fell in love. i lost my job (the best and most favourite job i've ever had) abruptly this past may. this is my longest period of unemployment since i was a teenager and while you think it would be the best time to lose yourself in fandom, i felt the opposite. fandom was such a lifeline to me when i had a miserable job and was in a bad relationship and needed an escape but i was very present in my own life this summer. i took my partner to visit my family and spent a lot of time with friends and played shows (and recorded some music... shameless self promo once again) and in between i watched so much star trek on my couch. this is such a long preamble to explain why i haven't been fandoming as much lately and why idk if i'll write anything again anytime soon (let's say, once i have a job i want to procrastinate at) but -- i HAVE been reading fic! not as much as before, but i have been, and there's enough for a fic rest list so that's what i'm giving you today. when times are dire [podfic] - @aibidil

drarry. i have such a soft spot for middle aged draco and harry falling in love, the relationships they have with their friends and their grown children. @aibidil reads her own podfics and it's an utter delight. i usually only listen to podfics or audiobooks when i'm doing work around the house but i can going on walks with my headphones just so i could listen to more of this one.

romione. i was so so honoured to see this pop up in my ao3 gifts during @thethreebroomsticksfic pride fest this year. it turns the well tread romione ground of shell cottage and the yule ball over a bit, using them as settings to explore a confusing mix of jealousy and sexuality for ron and hermione. ashes knows i love mess with these and it captures that teenage chaos wonderfully, then lets them laugh at it as secure and settled adults.

gen. warning that this is a tearjerker, especially if you've ever loved and lost a pet. i think the pure and simple expressions of love and gratitude from crook's pov here would be a comfort to any pet owner.

at some point this year, i got REALLY into the idea of a one-sided dramione. it's hard to look for, especially since it's such a popular ship but i managed to find a few that scratched the itch until i find the time and/or motivation to write one of my own new years eve by 2daughtersofathena, the guardian angel by mylifebelongstothebbc, and a boy of hans by elixirsoflife. the last one being my personal favourite, a grim take on the hanahaki disease trope.

this was recced by @whinlatter in @thethreebroomsticksfic discord (btw i feel like no one on my followers lists needs anyone to remind them to read beasts -- but please read beasts) and when i saw "gillian flynn treatment" in the tags i slammed the mark for later button. this is probably the most balanced and realistic portrayals of molly weasley and her role as a mother that i've ever read in hp fic. it's not weasley family fluff but it doesn't devolve into something so flat as bashing either. molly is regular mother with flaws and strengths like anyone else and how they amplify and shift with love and grief and pain and stress and duty and pressure. every single relationship she has with her children is uniquely expressed and the way it ties the past to the direct aftermath of the war is so well done and a great way to organize this giant, messy family. particular care here went into fred and george, giving them their own identities in a way that can be difficult, given the source material. a favourite line:

“Probably have tried to make us name the twins after them.” He stopped laughing, sucked in a breath. “Do you want to?” For a second she considered it. It would be wonderful, getting to use those names again like living things. But - “No,” she said. “I - if they were alive, I’d have said no, so I’m saying it now. Let the boys be their own people.” The truth was that she didn’t want to lose her brothers. To have their faces erased in her memory, painted over with her sons. To have to say no, not THAT Fab, I mean UNCLE Fab - he died before you were born. Anyway, she liked the names Fred and George. It was easier like this.

the scrunchie by @saintsenara

another fic i've meant to read for ages and finally got around to just yesterday. the background drama of these side characters as a cheap scrunchie from boots floats around them is so perfectly teenage. reminds me of the other series i loved as a teenager around the time HP was coming out: georgia nicolson and gossip girl. i could also compare it to derry girls a little, how despite the environment surrounding them these girls are still being girls, arguing about stupid things and getting crushes on boys and having the absolute most ridiculous blowout fights with your sister (parvati and padma's portrayal here is probably my favourite i've ever read!)

i also can't leave without reccing @saintsenara's wip, one year in every ten. i can't get enough of a good case fic. tomarry/harrymort (both versions of this ship, oddly, apply to this fic) is not something i've ever sought out but i really think the way it's handled here could win over any non-believer. it's sharp and funny in a way that makes it turns into poignancy hit even harder. i screenshotted two full phone screen pages of chapter 27 so i could go back and read them over and over. it might be one of the best things i've ever read from ron's POV (emphasis mine):

It had been a long ten years, with a chair at their table always left empty and a hole in their hearts always unfilled. Grief was exhausting and boring and dully painful, like a slightly sprained ankle which you can still walk on, but which always bothers you a little bit. But there had been love among the grief. There had been love before the grief - indeed love had caused the grief - and there had been love after. His love for his parents and his siblings had changed, the way wine left in a barrel changes and becomes richer and deeper. There was more sorrow in the love, as he threw a quaffle around with George and saw the tired lines at the corner of his eyes. There was more recrimination, more struggle with the mistakes they had all made in the past, as he finally sat down and had a real chat with mum and dad about how a lifetime of corned-beef sandwiches and maroon jumpers had made him feel. But there was more joy there too. And with joy came forgiveness and understanding and hope and fun.

Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore by scifigrl47 | T | 22k | Stony, Phlint: Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick. And some things shouldn't be a chore.

One Bad Thing by Katrow (Hermione and Draco)

This is such a well written (and super sexy) story, the first ever published by Katrow. It's an amazing inaugural fic where Hermione and Draco meet again, years after the war and at a time when Draco is apologizing for his past actions and behaviors. There's humor, intelligence, and a whole lot of chemistry here.

Read this for the smart, funny characters and the honest conversations that Dramione have with each other. The fic has both great original elements and some fun, familiar standards like a flashback to the Yule Ball, a big library, and weekly pub outings with alot of sexual tension. It's a fabulous read!

NaFM: Ch 9 (10?) and misc. thoughts

I don't count the prologue as the first chapter, so I guess it's chapter 9?

(This is a test post similar to those blogs. Simply curious to how it would work when I type my thoughts. Not bad so far lol)

Honestly, the chapter is going to be super long (40k+ words), and with that in mind, I'm sorta dreading how long the chapter covering the 5th yr will be. I feel sorta bad for the readers (srry, if u do read this lol), but I also don't care much cuz I'm sticking to the format of 1 chapter per school yr.

I've been fluctuating between working on Not a Future Missus and continuing planning this x-over fic I have posted (also on my AO3) for two diff. fandoms. Gosh, I also have so many other ideas for HP fics, including a Tom Riddle Sr-centric fic (one of those what-ifs in which Sr. raises pre-Voldy Tom) and a Drarry fic with the Veela!Draco trope (or a Veela!Draco fic with Drarry?), both of which I'm likely to type out; there's also a possible "spin-off" w/ NaFM, but employing time travel??? Idek anymore lol! But goodness the HP world has so much potential despite its numerous controversies (which I won't bring up cuz I'm not looking to start a war).

And sadly (maybe not for some ppl), no Dramione plans as of yet. Yes, I ship it as much as Drarry (don't hate on me now, or at least do it without a word cuz I'm a multi-shipper who refuses to fight over ships), though I haven't been reading much Dramione fics nowadays... or Drarry, since I fandom jump quite a bit.

Anyway, maybe I'll get rid of some scenes, or I'll keep it as it is (my fic, my management muhaha), but I maybe possibly probably perhaps should just make Harry and Ella/fem!Draco kiss each other and type the "23 yrs later" epilogue and be done with the fic LMAO! (April 1, 2024 plans???? If it's still incomplete by then???)

What hobbies do I even have at this point, besides reading/writing fanfics? The occasional doodle/drawing, certainly. And maintaining my Duolingo streak????

To whoever reads this honest-to-goodness sorta-long post, srry for the chaotic writing/typing! Just blurting this out before sleepy time LOL! (Sleep deprivation sure is making me taaalk and I'm probably gonna cringe the next time I see this if ever lmaoo)

“What’s the point of this task if we can’t even watch?” Ella grumbled as she glared at the lake. The waters were still as the second task progressed, with only an occasional ripple on the surface. The crowd chattered as they awaited the champions, but Ella was growing impatient. It had been months since the Yule Ball, and the Scottish Highlands were slowly readying for the coming spring. There was still a noticeable chill in the air, but that didn’t stop the continuation of the Triwizard Tournament. The second task had begun half an hour ago, and to say the least, the surface-dwelling spectators were growing bored. “If only they used Muggle filming methods,” Tracey said disappointedly from Ella’s right side. “They have these cameras, and you can connect them to these screens that project what’s happening through the lenses. It’s like our moving pictures, but everything happens in real time. I’ve been told about them sometimes.” “Somebody needs to invent a spell like that if they haven’t already,” Ella said. Casual conversations continued as time passed. At this point, everyone was preoccupied with each other, with only a few occasional glances towards the water. During the wait, Pansy ended up braiding Ella’s hair, before tying it and switching to Daphne. Why everyone had to get up at nine o’clock in the morning to stand in the cold and watch a lake was Ella’s main concern, but this was one of the more boring days compared to the last few years.

Edit cause I forgot to mention: When your ask first got sent, I thought you said overhated Harmony moments and I got pissed. XD

I don’t know 5 Harmony “moments” (shows how little evidence its shippers have), but I’ll list as much so-called evidence as I can. And I’m gonna list it in no particular order cause if I’m being perfectly honest… I hate them all equally.

[Also, I won’t include movie moments cause that’s immediately debunked by the fact that it isn’t canon.]

Aight, let’s get to work:

1. Hermione noticing that Harry grew an inch (in height): “And it doesn’t hurt that you’ve grown about a foot over the summer either.”

Noticing a big change in your best friend’s appearance means nothing, it merely means that you have eyes. Hermione was telling Harry why girls are getting more attracted to him now and listed points to help him understand, she was simply analysing and making logical conclusions. It doesn’t mean that she herself finds Harry attractive.

2. Harry getting pissed over Hermione going with Cormac: [“Serves you right for coming with him,” he told her severely.] … [“You considered Smith?” said Harry, revolted.]

In this scene, Harry didn’t want her going out with either Cormac or Zacharias. Apparently the shippers think Harry was “jealous” in this scene. Cormac and Zacharias are both creeps and bullies, it’s perfectly normal that Harry didn’t want his best friend going out with either of them. And Harry obviously knew Hermione and Ron both liked each other, so it’s no wonder that Hermione going out with a creep who Ron hates just to annoy him (Hermione flat-out admitted it to Harry) would anger Harry.

We would’ve known if Harry was jealous because a) he’s Mr. Point Of View so it would literally just be spelled out for us and b) in the same book, he was described as having “a monster pounding in his chest” (or something like that) when jealous about Ginny, so I think we’d have seen something similar in that scene if Harry were actually jealous and if Harmony shippers weren’t just making shit up.

3. Harry’s description of her at the Yule Ball.

Pretty much the sole two purposes of the Yule Ball being written was to make Ron look like an asshole (can you tell I’m fucking pissed about that? Fuck Rowling) and to show Hermione’s big glow-up (but of course the next day she transforms right back because she has to be “relatable uwu~🥺🤪✨”).

Everyone was in awe of her beauty, every single person there, hell, even Draco and Pansy were too. Does that count as Dramione and Pansmione evidence? 🤨

Acknowledging that someone looks attractive does not necessarily mean you find them attractive. It’s like: “Yes, objectively, they look good, but I myself do not find them attractive.”

This is all I could manage, there are some more Harmony “moments” but they’re so tiny to the point where I genuinely could not give a fuck. The three I’ve listed are the most popular and are the ones that bring out the rage in me.

So, you know how we've literally run out of characters in HP for you to dissect and/or give us your hc and opinions about? Well I'm thinking maybe we could give you ships! You know, like the ones you already did, Dramine. Tomione, etc. Can you do Harmony, or Harry x Hermione? I, personally, don't ship this. At all. I wanna know what you think! Will their a$$hole personalities clash? Also have a great day! =)

You know, to the surprise of everyone I feel like I don’t have much to say on Harry/Hermione. The fics generally aren’t great, not terrible either, not exactly my cup of tea.

I guess what I’ll say is that, to me, Harry/Hermione is very much a product of the films.

You see a very palatable, nice, Hermione with an equally palatable, nice, Harry. Usually in the fic the author’s never sure why Ron is even their friend and he slowly (or very quickly) gets written out of the story and dumped by the friend group. Ginny might also be crazy and evil on the side, poisoning Harry with love potions or what have you, depending how much the author feels the ship is threatened by Ginny’s existence.

Harry/Hermione is choosing the Betty out of the Betty and Veronica line up. It’s the amiable girl next door pairing, the long time friendship, something comfortable and sweet that makes sense given all Harry and Hermione have been through together. If Harry and Hermione of the books were... not Harry and Hermione of the books I’d probably have expected Harry/Hermione to be the canon pairing we get. As a trope, it makes a lot of sense, and in many ways makes far more sense than Ron/Hermione (which is a dumpster fire of a relationship) or Harry/Ginny (which is just... weird).

Which is why it’s almost always invariably dull.

Hermione’s the Emma Watson Hermione. She’s sweet, she’s nice, she’s smart but not obnoxious, and after she figured out her hair turns out to be quite pretty. Harry is sweet, perhaps a little angry from time to time, but a stand up guy who in these stories is a far better friend to Hermione than Ron.

Usually we learn that Hermione always liked Harry better than Ron but for Reasons (TM) thought she never had a chance with Harry or else tolerated Ron for Harry’s sake. Harry slowly learns that Ron truly is a dick to Hermione, that he just doesn’t know Ginny or Cho well enough to be in a relationship with either, and Ron is iced out of the friend group. Then Harry and Hermione defeat Voldemort in a subplot none of us care about.

That’s it.

That’s all there is.

For an entire 100k word story.

It’s not particularly bad, it doesn’t offend me in the same way Dramione often does, but it’s not particularly interesting either. To me, there’s no draw to it, it’s just... there.

I guess what I find most noteworthy about it is how nice they make Hermione and Harry.

Harry in the books often treats Hermione much the way the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang treats Dee Reynolds. Hermione’s the nagging female friend that he and Ron never want to listen to. Doesn’t matter what she’s saying, Hermione wants them to do their homework? Boring. Hermione thinks that extremely suspicious Firebolt package might be a bomb? What a stupid bitch. Hermione’s a stupid bird that Harry and Ron barely tolerate. Hermione knows this too, it’s why she endeavors to make herself so very useful to Harry and Ron. Because if she’s not, if she’s not their research monkey and homework guru, she’s back to being that girl crying in the bathroom nearly smashed by a troll because everyone hates her.

More, Harry shows 0 sexual interest in Hermione. She’s his ugly girl friend who is practically “one of the guys”. He’s utterly flabbergasted, along with Ron, when Hermione snags Victor Krum as a date to the Yule Ball (and even more stunned that Hermione cleans up well). However, while eventually Ron and Hermione enter the 90′s typical romance of will-they-won’t-they and they-argue-because-they-love-eachother, Harry doesn’t care. Harry doesn’t feel threatened by Hermione’s interest in Ron, gets over the pair of them dating fairly easily, and it’s basically at the point where Hermione could dangle herself naked over Harry’s bed and he would not care. At all.

I think, especially given Hermione’s awe of Harry before she gets to know him (he’s in books and famous, he saved her from a troll, he’s her first real friend), that if Harry had expressed any interest they probably would have ended up in at least a short lived relationship. Of course, it would have been a complete disaster, because Harry’s not dating material but it probably would have happened at some point.

And then of course Hermione would pull a full on Medea should Harry ever make the mistake of breaking her heart.

As for Hermione... I won’t say that she wouldn’t ever be interested in Harry. Definitely at first he’s a far more solid friend than Ron (who was an outright ass to her and continued to be so even when they started dating) but I think she realized early in that Harry was not an option. Harry gets friend zoned because Harry friend zones her so... I don’t really see her ever pining after Harry, he’s just not an option to her.

I’m not really sure why Hermione goes for Ron the way she does. I think it’s because he’s also A Friend of Harry’s. By dating Ron, no one else ever gets in the way of the friendship, they’re the golden trio forever. I think Hermione also likes to be safely smarter than her significant others. I don’t blame her for this, throughout the series Hermione is only valued for her intellect and has to be The Smart One or else is kicked out of the club. So of course she’s going to seek a relationship where she’s secure in being The Smart One. Now, Harry’s dumb as bricks, or at least as dumb as Ron, so that doesn’t really eliminate him as a possibility. So... basically, I think if Harry had shown interest then Hermione would have gone for it, but he never does, so it’s off the table and she never considers it seriously.

But that’s all moot point because Harry/Hermione never features Harry and Hermione of the books. If it did, well, I imagine the plot would be their horrific murder of Draco Malfoy and the subsequent coverup where they pin it on Umbridge.

Only one week left in the dramione LDWS - Quotes Edition!

Last week's prompt came from Pride & Prejudice: "I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."

The drabble I submitted turned into a bit of an homage to dramione fanfiction, so I thought I'd post it here as well😊

"Unbelievable. Unbelievable," Hermione fumed. "We've here two minutes and you've already managed to ruin destiny."

"Me?!” Draco blustered. “You snagged the thread."

"Because you bumped me!"

“Alright! Can you just... cool out?” He sneered to compensate for the honest-to-Merlin blush heating his face.

Hermione’s brow scrunched, “You mean chill out?”

“Same thing.”

“No, it’s actually - sodding hell - we’ll worry about your terrible grasp of muggle colloquialisms later. Right now we need to focus on how you’ve buggered up destiny.”

“The Tapestry is the fates weaving our lives as we live them. It’s our past and present, it isn’t our destiny.”

“Seriously? You want to have a ‘does the past dictate our future’ debate now?”

Draco heaved an exasperated sigh, "Let’s just take a look, yeah? It's probably nothing."

"Nothing? We could be dead - or worse, fired. Unspeakable L'Engle will drum us out of the Department!"

"Well it's just our fates we’re seeing, right? It’s probably unnoticable." Draco strode toward the misty edge of the cavern, where loose threads were knitting themselves together to depict the present.

Hermione crouched down to examine the tiny pull on the Tapestry of Fate, a loop of thread protruding only a couple millimetres from the shimmering fabric. "Okay, we should be alright,” she announced. “It only tweaked some meaningless chat I had with Harry in sixth year. Surely that won't-"

"Merlin," Draco exhaled, staring wide-eyed at the Tapestry.

"What?" Hermione hurried over, crowding him. "Where did we end up?" She squinted at the minute detail. "Is that-?"

"Pansy chewing us out for sneaking off to -ahem- ‘defile’ her solarium during a charity fete."

A strangled noise escaped Hermione as her eyes lit on the scenes preceding the reprimand. "We need to fix this!" She skittered away, suddenly very aware she’d been leaning against him.

“You try to fix the shag - er, snag, I’ll watch here to see what it does.”

Hermione cringed, “This is a terrible idea. We’re playing God.”.

“Alternatively, we could walk out of here and into the new present reality for a very awkward conversation with Pansy- freshly shagged, mind you.”

“I’m going! I’m going!”

After a few moments of analyzing the weave, she found a promising spot.

“Okay, there’s a History of Magic class I can give a little tug to.”

“Go on then.”

Carefully she pulled on the thread, flattening the minuscule loop.

“Well that’s... interesting,” Draco arched an eyebrow.

“What?!”

“Lift your top for me?”

“Bugger off!”

“Seriously.”

Hermione skeptically pulled back the neckline of her shirt to peep at her torso. “Jesus, fuck,” she hauled up the hem of her blouse to reveal a large tattoo of a book inscribed with a date stretching over her hipbone.

“Our wedding day apparently. Quite sweet, really,” Draco smirked.

“Obviously I suffered a traumatic brain injury in this timeline.”

She crouched back down, rolling up her sleeves as she warily eyed the threads, biting her lip.

A tug at a fourth year Hogsmeade trip yielded a soulbond and the disappearance of Draco’s dark mark. A poke at the Yule Ball had them shacked up on an East Asian island with Draco missing half an arm. A nudge at a first year Charms test and they’re clinging together in a dilapidated Order safehouse. When she prodded at a family trip she’d taken to France, Draco insisted she try something else immediately with such vehemence Hermione didn’t dare ask for details.

Several hours and countless readjustments later, with remarkably persistent Malfoy heirloom rings adorning their fingers, Hermione dropped her head into her hands.

“How is this possible?” she was verging on hysteria. “It’s like we’re together in every other bloody version of the universe!”

“I know. Your luck’s never been that good.”

“Should’ve kept that bloody time turner,” she muttered darkly.

Draco scowled. “Right. Because being with me is such an atrocity - despite it seeming inevitable in every version except the original.”

“I have plans, Malfoy.”

“Like what? Marrying a semi-literate ginger buffoon and pumping out a couple Weasel-brats?”

“What’s wrong with that?” she glared.

“Granger-” his penetrating gray eyes caused her breath to hitch “-literally every other option here is superior to that travesty.”

“So you’re saying you want to just walk out of here into the middle of some reality where we’re married or shagging or parents or-”

“I’m saying-” he stepped toward her, reaching out to blindly pluck a thread “-let’s leave it to fate.”

Glancing meaningfully toward the exit he offered his hand.
