uncle iroh is predictably one of the characters I've enjoyed the most on my ATLA rewatch but I hope we never find out what happened to his son's mom. unpopular opinion maybe but that man's got some unchecked misogyny problems and with his family's track record vis a vis women, I can only imagine he fed his own wife to the royal piranhas or whatever bc she said his favorite tea tasted like ass

I was mentioned in a pro-Ascendant Astarion post with this quote: "Astarion does not have a well-developed sense of self, and by default, he also lacks many of the skills that a well-adjusted adult should possess." This is the post it’s taken from: click me!
No problem at all—it's public, and I don’t see why anyone shouldn’t reference it. Naturally, the post was in opposition to that statement—generally speaking, I mean—but that’s fine too. Everyone has their own opinion and is free to express it. That’s not the point of my upcoming ramble! xD
It’s just that rereading my own words got me thinking more deeply about the topic and made me want to explore it further.
Tumblr media
Now, I’m not a psychologist, but I did study psychology. I took several exams at university and I actually did pretty well, lol. I didn’t complete my studies because life took me elsewhere—most importantly, my daughter was born—but the general knowledge I gained from psychology still follows me in everything I do every day.
So it’s second nature for me to analyze characters from the media I consume through that lens—Astarion included. Of course, this is just my perspective; I can’t say for certain whether the developers intended this for his character or whether they did specific research into his psychological development.
That said, today I feel like going off on a little tangent about this beautiful science. Still in reference to that heart-stealing vampire spawn that I’m aaaaabsolutely not obsessed with.
Let me also add a disclaimer. The concepts mentioned are just examples and cannot be applied literally, as every person is different and reacts differently to situations and stimuli. Likewise, the brain is plastic—neural connections change and adapt, and there is almost never a fixed or definitive condition. Above all, I’m not making any kind of diagnosis! That’s not within my competence! Keep these ideas well in mind!
So, why do I say that Astarion doesn’t have a well-developed sense of self? Let’s take it step by step and talk a little about the concept of the "self". I'm copy-pasting something from another post, lol. Rewriting it from scratch is too much work! xP
The self is quite a complex concept with many facets. Briefly put, it’s shaped by various internal and external factors and reflects a conscious image of "me." In psychology, it’s key to building the Ego of an individual—the capacity to act, understand, organize, and interpret experiences. The Ego provides a sense of uniqueness, coherence, and personal continuity since the self encompasses many "faces." All this forms the personality of an individual, which naturally develops (and changes) throughout life.
Particular attention in the formation of the self is given to sensitive periods, such as early childhood. The self determines the level of self-esteem based on an individual’s assessment of their worth and competence in the characteristics they attribute to themselves (Real Self), their future aspirations (Ideal Self), and what they want to avoid (Feared Selves). The greater the discrepancy between these aspects, the lower the level of self-esteem. Social support and approval, as well as competence in domains deemed important to the self, obviously contribute to perceiving oneself as a person of value.
Astarion, as we know, has had his sense of self fundamentally undermined. For him, the world is divided between those who have power and those who don’t, with the former always being the "winners" in his eyes. The magistrate he once was is long dead, along with his moral compass and the life he used to live—especially after 200 years of servitude to Cazador.
As vampire spawn, akin to a newborn in some respects, Astarion learned to exist solely within Cazador’s world, revolving around Cazador, for Cazador.
Tumblr media
There are lines of dialogue within the game that highlight this in a painful and terrifying way. For example, when Tav/Durge directly confronts Cazador, or when Cazador ends up on his knees in front of Astarion after one of his brothers or sisters dies during the ritual. Cazador says: “He [Astarion] is afraid. He’s afraid because all he has ever knows is you and me. And without us, he is nothing.” Or: “And then? What will you be without me? A shade? A specrte in the shadows, devoid of all purpose.”
It’s a terrible thing, but it’s true. Cazador represents everything—Astarion’s entire world—and when he dies, he leaves behind a void that’s even more frightening. And let’s not forget that, in the real world, it takes very little to completely erase a person—and two hundred years in the hands of an abuser is an overwhelming amount of time, a detail that too often gets underestimated or completely forgotten.
The whole matter becomes even more disturbing and painful when Cazador suggests that without Tav/Durge, Astarion would have come crawling back to him with his tail between his legs. To his fucking tormentor. And sadly, it's a painful concept because it really happens in real life—when you have nothing and no one, when you have no means of your own and are completely dependent on another person, no matter how terrifying they are. Cazador is certain that Astarion will return to him, even if it means dying. And it's a concept with a devastating impact.
So Cazador was the domineering father figure, and vampire society functions under strict rules handed down by vampire lords. In this hostile context, without any room for self-expression or choice, Astarion developed a fragmented and damaged self-image. Constantly belittled by Cazador as an individual (small, weak, useless, incapable, all words he uses in the game), always pitted against his brothers and sisters, and degraded from a magistrate to a prostitute (this is important because it’s the only skill—or "talent," as he calls it himself—that Astarion believes gives him any value or power, forming the basis for his self-image). It’s easy to imagine just how high his self-esteem must be, right? Most importantly, he never developed the skills to navigate life as a free individual—at least not in a healthy way.
Good Lord, he thinks that in order to receive support, he has to sell himself to Tav/Durge and offer his sexual services—otherwise, he has no hope of survival! And that’s why I say he doesn’t possess all the skills of a well-adjusted adult. Other glaring examples of this—so glaring they hit you like a punch in the eye—are his inability to say no and to recognize his own limits. And shall we talk about the infamous question: What do you want? The first time, he deflects, and essentially gives the answer the player wants to hear. The second time, he states it plainly: he doesn't know. He doesn't know how to make decisions, he hasn’t done it in 200 years, and the very idea terrifies him to his core. These are all skills that a well-balanced person possesses—let’s not kid ourselves.
Like any mature and well-balanced adult, one knows how to recognize their feelings, define them, communicate them, and most importantly, not fear them. Astarion, on the other hand, is unable—after 200 years of pure shit—to understand what he feels for Tav/Durge, and he won’t be able to until the end of the Pale Elf’s quest. “I don’t know—but isn’t it nice, not to know? You’re not a target, nor a victim, not just one night it's better to forget. But then... whatever in the world could you be?”
Tumblr media
So, even if reluctantly (and despite his fear), he ends up leaning on Tav/Durge. He needs a guiding figure to help him figure out what to do because making decisions and acting independently don’t come naturally to him. Especially outside of his talents, sex and survival. He needs to be rehabilitated, re-educated, and to achieve this, he requires a safe and healthy environment where he can experiment and grow, perhaps developing other faces of the self on which to base a new evaluation. Like, I'm not just a slave or a whore: but I'm also a companion, a friend, a lover, a hero and I'm able to listen, to help, to learn, to collaborate, etc.
And let’s not forget that when the fateful confrontation with Cazador is brought up, Astarion explicitly asks Tav/Durge for help. “I need to take the fight to him. And I need you to help me,” he says. How to help him—whether to ascend or not—is up to the player and how they choose to play. But the fact remains: Astarion needs support.
Meanwhile let’s take a look at some of the consequences of low self-esteem:
Difficulty opening up in social settings and communicating one's emotions and needs
Extreme self-criticism
Devaluing or ignoring one’s own qualities
Tendency to constantly apologize and feel guilty for things that are not actually one's responsibility
Tendency to appease others due to perceiving oneself as inferior to one’s peers
Use of negative words to describe oneself
Difficulty making decisions and maintaining personal goals over time
Negative and self-blaming internal dialogue
Belief that success is due to luck, with difficulty attributing accomplishments to oneself
Not believing compliments that are given to them
And now, let’s look at the most common causes for the development of low self-esteem:
Being raised by extremely critical and demanding parents
Being heavily devalued by parents or other authority figures
Being ignored or ridiculed during childhood
Being a victim of physical, sexual, or psychological abuse
Achieving poor academic results
Experiencing episodes of bullying or mistreatment in the workplace
Suffering a financial collapse or a significant breakup
Being subjected to a prolonged period of stress
Suffering from a chronic and persistent medical condition
Suffering from psychological disorders (e.g., anxiety or depression)
Does this remind you of something? Or maybe someone in particular? Does that person, by any chance, have red eyes and pointed teeth?
Naturally, these are just examples, and everything varies depending on the individual, but I believe these points still manage to convey the concept.
They especially give the idea of how much events—and especially the context in which we live—impact our psyche. For example, thanks to neuroscience and increasingly detailed brain imaging, we know that brain areas change according to the factors mentioned above; they train like muscles, so to speak, becoming larger and more reactive every time they are activated.
So, if someone is subjected to chronic stress, the brain areas responsible for managing it will become easily activated, bringing with them a whole series of consequences that affect performance, behavior, perception, thinking, and so on.
Likewise, the more the “right” areas of the brain are activated, the more the brain itself will develop in a healthy and balanced way, forming neural connections that support the tools (perception, thinking, etc) mentioned above.
Meanwhile, other areas—such as those related to stress responses—will remain small and more difficult to activate. (Obviously, brain areas don’t literally “grow” or “shrink” in size, but the connections between neurons (synapses) are strengthened or weakened depending on how much they’re used. This is a principle known as “neural plasticity”: what you use becomes reinforced, what you neglect becomes weaker.)
A curiosity: even our mood influences how we perceive people and the world around us—and consequently, our thoughts and impressions too! xD
Tumblr media
This image is heartbreaking, because these brains belong to two three-year-old children—and the differences are significant.
The brain on the right is missing key areas that are present in the one on the left. These missing parts impact the abilities of the child with the smaller brain:
this child will likely be less intelligent as an adult compared to the one with the larger brain,
will be less capable of empathizing with others,
and will be at higher risk of becoming addicted to drugs and involved in violent crimes.
Additionally, the child with the smaller brain is more likely to remain unemployed and dependent on social services, and may develop mental health issues or other serious health problems.
The large difference in size and development between these two brains is not due to illness or injury, but rather to how the two children were treated by their mothers.
The child with the larger, more developed brain was loved by their mother, who was consistently present and attentive to their needs. The child with the smaller brain, on the other hand, was neglected and abused. It is precisely this difference in treatment that explains why one child's brain developed fully while the other’s did not.
Of course, our favorite vampire spawn isn’t a developing child—but the point is that certain environments and experiences have a profound impact and shape many aspects of our lives, making us more or less equipped to face challenges.
At this point, I’d like to focus a bit on the reasoning process in general. It’s easy to believe that when humans think, make decisions, and reflect on a problem or task, they do so in the most rational way possible. And that’s where we go wrong! First of all, the cerebral cortex — the part of the brain responsible for complex cognitive functions such as thinking, awareness, memory, attention, and language — is located in the upper region of the brain. Most stimuli, in order to reach the cortex, must pass through all the lower areas of the brain, which often trigger behavioral responses even before the stimulus reaches rational thought. For example, the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for danger responses. A silly example: how many times have we jumped out of our skin before realizing that the loud, scary noise was just a window slamming shut? First comes the fear response, then the evaluation of the stimulus follows.
As if that weren’t enough, the brain plays other little tricks on us — without us even being aware of it — because that sneaky thing does a whole lot on its own, especially when it comes to thinking and making decisions.
So... Astarion has a very limited perspective—mostly the one offered by Cazador. As we said earlier, the world is divided into those who have power and those who suffer it. Period. But we all know that in between there are infinite shades of gray, and that can’t be denied. In the same way, Astarion believes that Tav/Durge is the exception to the rule—the only kind person in the world, the one and only for him. But as much as it flatters our ego to hear that, we know very well that no one is that special. It’s always Astarion’s perspective that’s extremely limited. And in fact, here too, Tav/Durge has the opportunity to broaden his view, to point out that the world is full of kind people who would care for him if only he opened himself up and showed kindness in return. This narrow way of thinking and seeing things, this resistance to noticing alternatives, fits perfectly into the category of cognitive biases.
Let’s start with the premise that the human brain needs to be both effective and efficient. That means reaching a result in the shortest time and using the fewest resources. Therefore: when we think and make decisions, we don’t always do so rationally. We use heuristics—mental shortcuts—often following patterns we've used before. A silly example: if I have to cook a dish I’ve made a hundred times, I don’t sit down to rethink how and why I should cook it—I just switch off my brain and do it the way I’ve always done. Many heuristics are good and useful—others, not so much. And when they fall into the latter category, they become biases.
There are many types, but let’s look at one that we all, even us Astarion fans, share. xD Confirmation Bias!
Confirmation bias manifests when we tend to search for, interpret, or remember information that supports our pre-existing beliefs, ignoring anything that contradicts them or isn’t completely aligned.
Once a certain mental imprint forms, new experiences only deepen that groove, without any willingness to explore other interpretative modes—in fact, they tend to further crystallize internal beliefs.
We can say that the person is cherry-picking—in a complex set of data and information, they pick out only what resonates with a belief they already hold, which, in some way, is convenient for them.
The reason is easy to see: if I don’t challenge a belief—even if it’s irrational—I’ll save time, create less friction, and reduce internal and external resistance to a given situation.
Because confirmation bias shows up when a person selects only the evidence that supports their point of view, it easily becomes a self-sustaining system, keeping them locked in an interpretive and experiential microcosm that risks becoming increasingly stifling—a self-built prison.
Tumblr media
Astarion is stuck on tracks he’s known inside and out for centuries, forcibly carved into his mind—and for him, it’s all too easy to filter everything through that lens. And this cuts him off from a myriad of possibilities, in a completely unconscious way. It’s like throwing a wrench in your own gears. So Tav/Durge represents an opening to a different value system, one that could replace or at least expand our vampire spawn’s worldview. Not without resistance, of course—those brain connections will get you!
So, to conclude, let’s go back to the beginning and to the statement in question.
"Astarion does not have a well-developed sense of self, and by default, he also lacks many of the skills that a well-adjusted adult should possess."
Yes, maybe out of context it might sound bad. I certainly don’t see Astarion as half a man, incapable of thinking or choosing for himself. But I do recognize that he has serious vulnerabilities that need to be treated with care and taken into account. Not when we're playing—when we play, we do what we like and have fun—but when we analyze him as a character. When Astarion, at the end of the Pale Elf quest, in the good ending, thanks us for saving him from himself, what he means, in my opinion, is exactly this: thank you for supporting me when my vulnerabilities, my fears, my blind spots, and my narrow perspective were getting the best of me. Because, let’s be honest, Astarion’s story is also about this—about rediscovery, about learning to live again, about changing, improving, growing, developing relationships, new abilities and skills. Not as a rogue or as a vampire, or within game mechanics—but as a person.
The point is: Astarion has come out of a horrific situation, one that has to have left marks, wounds, infected pus festering beneath the skin. A situation that never allowed him to understand what he liked, what he wanted, who he really was—simply because he couldn’t express himself, couldn’t think about his own needs, couldn’t say no. Couldn’t develop his sense of self in peace and safety.
A situation that left him unable to face the world and the people in it in a healthy way, unable to identify and express his own feelings, unable to say that damn "no" or to make choices. To decide, yes. And in fact, every time he’s asked what he wants to do, his answers are vague—or he says he doesn’t know, or admits that he’s afraid of those damn choices. He’s afraid of freedom, of consequences, and of everything else beyond the four things he knows—the four fucking things Cazador drilled into him, all around power and control.
And I’m really supposed to believe that the one choice he’s absolutely sure about is Ascension? Hell no. Just like he's not sure he doesn't want to ascend!

⟡ ݁₊ welcome to the end of the world! (please leave your sanity at the door.)
𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 . . . four friends: nick, matt, chris, and you—find themselves stuck together at the end of the world, trying to survive a zombie apocalypse with nothing but their wits, a questionable supply of snacks, and zero emotional maturity. you’re just trying to stay alive without losing your mind—or falling for someone on the team.
𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 . . . just some violence, nothing really
CHAPTER FIVE: FLARE GUNS
read other parts here!
Tumblr media
it’s weird, how fast things can shift.
one minute, you’re kissing matt with blood on your collarbone and adrenaline in your throat. the next, you’re climbing six flights of stairs in an abandoned apartment complex that smells like mold, rot, and regret, wondering if it’s physically possible to die from being emotionally overwhelmed and undead at the same time. nick leads the way, flashlight in one hand, crossbow in the other. he’s muttering under his breath about poor architectural design and how this place “looks like it was condemned before the zombies even showed up.”
chris is behind him, holding lieutenant whiskers like a baby and pointing dramatically at every open door like he’s in a horror movie. “if a ghost shows up, i’m suing.”
“there are no ghosts,” nick says.
“and yet i feel haunted.”
you and matt bring up the rear. well. you’re trying to focus on walking and not on how warm his hand was against your waist earlier. or how he kissed you like he wasn’t entirely sure the world would still be around tomorrow. or how you kissed him back like it didn’t matter. because now you have bigger problems.
nick said the building might be good for shelter. it’s got height, decent barricade potential, and a roof where you could maybe send a signal. maybe. it also has broken windows, weird noises, and a very unsettling stain on the third floor wall that no one wants to talk about. “okay,” nick says as you reach the top level, shining his flashlight around the open hallway. “roof access is just past that creepy-ass stairwell. if there are any zombies up here, they’re probably—”
crash.
something slams behind you. hard.
you spin around and hear the sharp, ugly snarl of something very, very undead.
“we’ve got company!” chris shouts.
from two different directions, they come—four, five, maybe six of them. fast, hungry, and cornering you in the narrow hall.
“go!” matt yells, shoving you toward the stairwell. “get to the roof!”
you all bolt. the hallway groans under your weight. lieutenant whiskers screeches. someone (nick) yells something about “tactical retreating,” which is code for run, run, run. you reach the roof access door and find—it’s locked. of course. because the universe thinks you haven’t suffered enough today.
“matt, help me break it!” you shout.
you both slam into it, again and again. the wood groans. zombies are closer now, hands clawing around the corner. finally—crack. the door bursts open. you all spill onto the roof, slamming it shut behind you. nick jams it with a pipe he found god-knows-where.
panting. sweating. not dead.
yet.
the roof is wide, open, and—bad news—totally exposed. worse news: you’re out of food, almost out of water, and surrounded on all sides by zombies. the only advantage you have is height, and that doesn’t count for much when your enemies don’t get tired and you do. “okay,” nick says between gulps of air. “what did we learn?”
“that this building sucks,” you say.
“that locked doors are the real villains,” chris adds.
lieutenant whiskers meows in agreement.
“we have to signal someone,” matt says, scanning the sky. “there’s a flare gun in my bag.” you raise an eyebrow. “you’ve had a flare gun this whole time?”
“i was saving it for an emergency.”
you gesture wildly. “what do you call this?”
“…fair.”
he pulls it out, aims it high, and fires. the flare streaks across the sky in a burst of red light. it’s beautiful and loud and dramatic—and now everything within ten miles knows exactly where you are. the moment the light fades, the groaning below gets louder.
“maybe that was a mistake,” you say.
“definitely a mistake,” nick mutters.
“hey, if anyone’s watching, they’ll come,” matt says, not sounding fully convinced. you move to the edge of the roof and stare out at the city. it’s quiet for now. broken and burning in places, but still somehow alive. matt steps beside you, arms crossed. “you okay?” he asks. you nod slowly. “just tired of almost dying. kind of hoped today would be the one day we didn’t do that.”
“same.”
you glance over at him, eyes catching for a beat too long. there’s something unspoken again—tension, electricity, something. but then—another crash. a louder one. you all turn.
the pipe holding the roof door shut just snapped.
the door creaks.
they’re coming.
and this time?
you might not all make it off this roof.

The Lost Boys: How They Dream
Marko
- Bright bold colors and random images
- Distance sounds and physical sensations
- He dreams in a lot of red and blues
-He hears pigeon chirps and motorcycles engines
- very abstract
- He knows how the dream makes him feel, but what the dream is about is always unclear to him
- I think his jacket is based off his dreams
- He started with a plan jacket, and then every time he had a dream he would add something to his jacket that looked like what every he dreamed about
- It’s why his jacket is so wild and unhinged looking
- He spent many months digging through dumpsters and searching through thrift stores to find pieces for “the jacket” as he called it
- I think all the boys tried to contribute to the jacket too
- Dwayne cut a piece of his red bandanna off for Marko to use on his jacket
- David found a some scrap fabric and burnt pieces of it with a cigarette to attempt to make a cool looking design
- And with all my being I believe that Paul was the reason for the fishing lures on Marko’s jacket shoulder
- Dwayne and David thought they looked ridiculous, but Marko thinks they are cool looking
Paul
- Doesn’t usually dream
- Which he HATES
- He wants to have dreams sooooo badly
- He tries all the tricks that he reads about from magazines or picks up from various “spiritual’ people on the board walk
- He has tried special teas
- Turning his clothes inside out
- Mediating (which is really hard for him since he can’t sit still )
- Walking around the cave counter clockwise before morning
- Wearing “magical” trinkets while he sleeps (this one David makes fun of him hardcore for)
- But nothing works!
- He even paid a local Boardwalk witch once to “cast a spell” so that he could dream
- He gave her 50 bucks, and she said some magical words and sent Paul on his way
- It did not work
- He went back the next night and overheard her talking to someone about a “dumb blonde” trying to dream that she ripped off
- Paul, uncharacteristically, moped back to the cave
- When he told the boys what happened, well…..let’s just say that Santa Carla had once less witch by the end of the night
Dwayne
- he has very vivid dreams, with complex story lines that sometimes carry over to the following night morning
- The problem is that 8 times out of 10 he doesn’t remember his dreams
- This frustrates him to no end
- He alway remembers how the dream made him feel or sometimes the general theme of it
- Like he will recall that he dreamed about an exciting adventure or a sensual romance, but he can’t really tell you what exactly happened in it
- There is one exception to this though
- When he has a nightmare
- His always remembers his nightmares so vividly and can recall them clearly when he wakes up
- He would rather dream like this though, then to not dream at all like Paul
David
- David dreams pretty normally
- Sometimes he has a dream sometimes he doesn’t
- He dreams a lot about his past and his present family
- Sometimes they are good memories, sometimes not
- The bad memory dreams always seem to be recurring too
- Like if he has a bad dream one day, he will probably have the same dream over and over again for a week
- If he has an s/o then he definitely would dream about them ( in both G and X rated form hehehehe)
- I think because he has power of the mind he can also influence people’s dreams
- He finds this quiet entertaining, and has been trying to hone this skill for sometime
- He practices on the people who fall asleep on the beach while stair gazing
- He likes to give them the most weirdest or scariest dream he can think of, and then run away and watch from a distance when they wake up in a panic

GamesRadar: "It felt like we needed to do something": How Varric Tethras went from nearly being left out of Dragon Age: The Veilguard to becoming a foundational character
Interview | Exploring the role of Varric Tethras in Dragon Age: The Veilguard with BioWare's creative director, John Epler
Excerpts under cut due to spoilers.
John Epler: "Varric is such a fan favorite, and has been part of Dragon Age since Dragon Age 2 – it felt like we needed to do something. At the end of the game, it's very clear that a chapter of Dragon Age is being closed, even as a new one is being started, and having Varric involved in the ending and that final beat in the way that he was felt right to us."
""While it may have "felt right" for Varric to be in Dragon Age: The Veilguard and factor into its ending in this way, says Epler, it took some time for the team to come to that conclusion. With such a long development cycle, the loveable dwarf wasn't even part of the story at one stage. "It's interesting, because in some of our earliest versions of what we wanted to do for Dragon Age 4, Varric was not actually involved. Varric was doing his own thing as the Viscount of Kirkwall," Epler says. "But I think especially as we got to the version of Dragon Age: The Veilguard that shipped, it felt very strange to have a story about Solas not also include Varric. For us, having them [Solas and Varric] exist in contrast throughout the story - obviously, with Varric being something existing entirely in Rook's mind - provides different ways of looking at the core theme, which is regret." As Epler explains, Varric is "not someone who does a good job of confronting his regret", whether that be in Inquisition when it comes to his love interest and crossbow namesake, Bianca, or with his brother in DA2. Rook, on the other hand, is forced to confront them, while Solas's regrets "drive everything he does." He's a character that "refuses to be happy, refuses to feel joy, because he feels it'd be a betrayal of his people, of what he's done". But as Epler adds, having Varric "be the kind of linchpin" around which all the regrets hinge "felt powerful". Varric may not be good at confronting his own regrets, but his death and role eventually pushes Rook to face theirs, and in turn, you can try to help Solas get past his own if you so choose.""
"Without a mark on your hand like the Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition, or an army you can bring together like the Grey Warden in Dragon Age: Origins, Rook is "just a person with a team", as Epler puts it, so you have to make sure that they're as ready as possible to face what's to come. [...] Epler says Varric felt like a natural character to juxtapose Solas. Acting kind of like "the angel and the devil on your shoulder", Solas - while not actually a devil - is the one who's more focused on the mission and goal of stopping the gods, while Varric constantly reminds you that your team matters and you need to take care of them first and foremost. The decision to kill Varric early on was partly fueled by a worry that people would find Solas "a little too sympathetic in his goals". From past experience, Epler says the team saw a lot of that with The Trespasser DLC, where many really wanted to help Solas and believed he was right. But he is going to end the world, after all, and once you realize the twist about Tethras' true fate, Varric serves to demonstrate that "Solas will sacrifice almost anyone or anything in pursuit of what he sees as the greater good." But even if he is willing to go to extreme lengths, Solas does still regret what happens to his old friend. In fact, Epler explains that he even finds it comforting to think that Varric is still out there in some form. "Varric's a complex character," says Epler. "He runs away from his problems, he likes to shade the truth, even to the people that he's working with. The Varric that you see, the Varric that Rook experiences, [are] the best parts of Varric that Rook remembers. It's just this mentor figure that's always there for them. And I think even Solas finds some comfort in knowing that there's still a piece of him out there, even though he knows that it's manipulation, it's not the real Varric."
""DA2 starts with a character death about 45 minutes in, when your siblings dies. And the feedback we got, which was very fair feedback is, 'okay, but I don't care, because I've known this person for like, 45 minutes'. So having Varric die at the beginning, originally that was it. He was going to die, and it was going to be this big, shocking moment," Epler says. "But part of the problem with making a game 10 years after the last one, and needing to make it so existing players – but also new players – can get in and feel a lot of the same things, is you can't bank on two games worth of built up memories, built up attachment, to make the death land. For a lot of players it would have been like, 'okay, but I've only known this guy for 45 minutes. So why do we care?'" In order to still have the death at the beginning of the game, the team eventually landed on the idea of his not-so-real presence in the Lighthouse in order to give players more time with Varric. "And that's the beauty of game development," Epler adds, "something that you start off with as a way to solve a problem actually becomes so core to the identity game.""
"Varric Tethras was originally brought to life by Mary Kirby, a veteran developer who has worked on the Dragon Age series for many years at BioWare. Sadly, she was part of the layoffs last year, but as Epler fondly highlights, Kirby wrote the vast majority of the conversations you have with Varric. "She was one of the first people we told 'Hey, so we're talking about killing Varric, you're okay with this, right?' Because at that time, she wasn't even on the project," Epler says. "But Mary was fantastic to work with, she and I worked [together in the past]. I was Varric's cinematic designer for Inquisition and for DA2. There are a couple of things that came up towards the end of the project that I had an opportunity to write. And it was lovely to remind myself how Mary had always written Varric, and how that character came together.""

[CN] MLQC’s Lucien - Strategy Game Date - English Translation (1/2)
⚠️ SPOILER ALERT!! ⚠️
This post contains a detailed spoiler for a date that has not been released in EN yet! Feel free to notify me if there are any mistakes in the translation~
Tumblr media
"Wow, if you remember someone, they must be really impressive!"
"Not at all. In fact, on most of the days we've played, he couldn't even win a pack of biscuits."
"So, about the same level as me then~"
"But MC is special to me. Whether it's ‘biscuits', 'candy', or even 'unreasonable requests', you always manage to win them over in another way."
Translation under the cut!
[T/N: Before reading the date, I highly recommend you all to read this R&S: Regarding What Book Doesn't Say (and while at it read The Victim Who Disappeared too~). This date contains important references to that R&S, and I would like to analyze this date later in comparison with it at the end of this date🥺 There's also some reference to S1 chapter 23 but I'm gonna assume that y'all already read it u.u.]
If you want to follow along with the voice, you can follow it here.

[Call- On The Way Home from Work]
Lucien: I just saw your missed call, what's wrong?
MC: [worriedly] I was just wondering why Professor Lucien, who clearly got off work an hour ago, still hasn't come home yet.
Lucien: [chuckles softly]  Sorry, I was held up a bit by something.
Lucien: If you're not too busy, could you bring a trolley and come pick me up at the small park outside the complex?
MC: I certainly can, but what happened?
Lucien: I was stopped by that old gentleman who often plays chess in the park, and he invited me to play a game with him.
MC:  Hmm? Why did that grandpa suddenly "abandon" his friends and come to you?
Lucien: Today, his chess friend stood him up, so he was searching the whole park for a "destined" person who could play chess.
Lucien: And on my backpack, I happened to have a chess pendant that you gave me.
MC: Oh~ But the Xianqi (Chinese chess) Grandpa plays and international chess aren't the same type, right?
Lucien: There are indeed quite big differences between the two, but luckily, I'm not too unfamiliar with the rules of Xiangqi.
MC: Judging by Professor Lucien’s tone, it seems like he has won~
Lucien: It was a narrow victory.
Lucien: However... I'm having some regrets now.
MC: Why?
Lucien: Things seem to have gotten a little out of hand after I won the game. He enthusiastically invited me to solve an endgame puzzle—
[Trivia: In chess, endgame refers to a chess problem where only a few pieces remain on the board, and the challenge is to find the best moves to win or achieve a draw.]
Lucien: And after I solved it, I found out that this puzzle has apparently been around for a few years.
MC: Wow! That's amazing...! So, doesn't that mean the brilliant Professor Lucien is going to become a big celebrity in the park?
Lucien: [sighs] ...But they're a bit too enthusiastic.
Lucien: [he sounds so helpless and dumbfounded it's cute LOL] To celebrate, that grandpa and the elderly watching the game gave me all the eggs, rice, and cooking oil they got from the supermarket.
Lucien: I couldn't refuse at the moment, so now I'm stuck here, overwhelmed by this weighty goodwill.
MC:  Pfft, hahaha~ So that's why you asked me to bring a trolley and rescue you!
MC: I think I see you! Hmm? Are you buying something?
Lucien: [chuckles] Mm, I just found a flower vending machine here.
Lucien: After all, I did ask my girlfriend to come rescue me, so I figured I should at least buy a bouquet of flowers as a thank you.
[Prologue-Surprise Journey]
Tumblr media
MC: You're going to compete against the world champion of 3D chess next week?!
When I arrive home from work and step into the entryway, the news hits me like a brick, leaving me frozen in place.
[Trivia: 3D Chess is a variant of traditional chess that adds a third dimension with multiple horizontal layers. It's different and more complex compared with classic 2D chess because besides being able to move horizontally, it can also move vertically between layers, and naturally, it has different rules compared to the classic (I tried to search the rules of one type of 3D chess and ended up being confused at it HAHA). Most ppl def can't easily learn it in one try unless you're Xu Mo]
Lucien calmly takes my bag and nods slightly.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Mm, the tournament organizers invited Carl to play a simultaneous exhibition.
[Trivia: In chess simultaneous exhibition means one player plays against multiple opponents at the same time]
Lucien: Besides me, there will also be many 3D chess players and enthusiasts participating.
MC: ...Wait a minute, Lucien, you haven't been scammed, have you?
MC: There are a lot of scams going around these days that seem to trick people with things like registration fees.
[gurl why would you think that the great and mighty™️ Professor Lucien would get scammed🤣]
Lucien: That possibility certainly can't be ruled out, but I've already confirmed it.
Lucien can't help but chuckle a bit and opens the official website of the International Chess Federation.
Following the movement of his fingertips, I quickly found Lucien's name on the shortlist.
MC: So awesome…
MC: You've obviously only been playing 3D chess for a month, yet you're already able to participate in such a competition.
Lucien: This type of game is actually not that difficult once you grasp the rules.
MC: ...That's precisely something a genius would say.
He winks a little smugly, smiles, and pulls me into his arms.
Lucien: So, would MC like to go together?
Lucien: I recall you don't seem to be very busy next week.
MC: Of course, I would like to!
MC: This is your first time participating in a chess tournament, so I wouldn't want to miss it.
Lucien: That's good to hear. Otherwise, I might have to repack my suitcase.
Following his gaze, I notice he's already packed some of my clothes in the suitcase and I can't help but laugh.
MC: You already knew I'd say yes.
Lucien: Mm, after all, it seems like MC can never bring herself to turn down my requests.
[Date]
=[Part 1]=
Tumblr media
MC: The guesthouse you chose is so beautiful!
I lean out from the villa window and look outside; the warm breeze passes through the tropical orange trees, stirring sweet orange-scented ripples on the clear pool water.
MC: This garden is exactly like a scene from an American movie, I feel like a pool party is about to start any second now.
Lucien: [chuckles] After I finish my competition, we might as well have a pool party here too.
MC: Sounds good! Then I…
I spin around excitedly, but then my gaze is suddenly caught by a vibrant blaze of crimson, making me fall silent.
Tumblr media
Lucien is dressed in a cherry-red suit paired with an olive-green tie, giving off a bold retro vibe.
Complementing this look, a sleek leather belt with a ring buckle and a tilted round hat adds a touch of simplicity and style.
Tumblr media
Lucien: [teasingly] If you keep looking at me like that, I might actually get a little shy.
Despite saying so, he doesn't shy away and instead approaches me with a smile.
MC: It's just so stunning... Did this Great Chess Player pick this outfit specifically for the competition?
Lucien: There will be a lot of people at the competition, so maybe this will help me better attract the attention of a certain little lady.
[T/N: Great Chess Player (大棋手 - dà qíshǒu) is how MC teasingly and admiringly refers to him while little lady (小姑娘 - xiǎo gūniang) is Lucien's special term of endearment to MC. So yes, he's the one picking the outfit to attract her attention, just like male peacocks displaying their feather🤣 Please don't be harsh on his color choice because he literally can't see them🥲]
MC: [pouts] Humph, I want to protest~
MC: Even without any help, I can still instantly spot you in a crowd!
Lucien: [chuckles] Of course, I believe that. But I also have a selfish motive.
He gently pinches my puffed-out cheeks and meets my gaze with a smile.
Tumblr media
Lucien: [gently and sincerely] Just thinking about you watching me throughout the competition... it'll likely fill me with strength.
✂———————–
Tumblr media
In the vast venue, a hundred chess players are seated at their tables, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Carl, the world champion.
The audience seats are already packed with hundreds of spectators, and the broadcasting equipment, along with the commentators, is set up and ready to go.
Feeling the solemn atmosphere, I shrink back a little and quickly walk over to the family seating area within the venue to sit down.
Host: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the International 3D Chess Championship!
Host: Here today, we have chess elites gathered from all around the globe.
Host: They have emerged from fierce preliminary rounds and will face Carl, the champion of the International 3D Chess Championship, in a head-to-head battle.
Just then, on the large screen suspended above the venue, a refined-looking man is waving and greeting the crowd below.
Host: Following the classic tournament rules, each player will have 120 minutes to make their first 40 moves, after which they will have another 60 minutes to complete the rest of the game.
Host: To ensure fairness and smooth progression, a team of referees will supervise the entire match.
Host: Please remain quiet during the match so that the players can concentrate.
Host: We hope you all enjoy this feast of intellect and strategy!
As the match bell rings, the first game appears on the big screen.
Carl opens with a knight's jump, using the black pieces. Time flows in silence for a long while before his opponent finally makes their move.
Just as the unfamiliar and complex cross-layer moves are starting to make my head spin, the game reaches Lucien's table.
Tumblr media
Facing Carl's aggressive opening, Lucien doesn't panic. Calm and collected, he establishes his defensive formation.
I quietly note the position of his piece, trying to summon the knowledge I learned from playing classic chess with him in an effort to keep up with the game.
However, as the game progresses, I quickly become lost amidst the complexity of the situation.
Thankfully, that splash of cherry-red color always manages to blur out the world, allowing me to clearly see him every time I look up.
While waiting for his turn, Lucien leans back and intently watches the live screen, unlike the others who are engrossed in studying their own games.
[This passage implies that, unlike other players who are focused solely on their own games, Lucien is observing the matches on the live screen to study the world champion's strategies and gameplay. Also, this passage is an interesting parallel with how Lucien sees the world - to him, her color blurred the world around her, allowing him to see her clearly🥺]
Yet whenever it's his turn to make a move, he does it extremely quickly.
After a few rounds, players on the field are gradually eliminated and leave, but Lucien remains seated, his remaining time nearly equal to Carl's.
Most of the time, his expression remains calm, only occasionally does his brow and eyes curve slightly as if he's noticed some clever moves.
Even though he's far away, I feel like I can see that fascinating and captivating world through his eyes.
I gaze for a long time, so long that I only snap back to reality when Carl sits down opposite Lucien.
The stage is empty, and before I realize it, only that red figure remains.
The black and white sides are locked in a tense struggle, like a small battlefield. Pieces fell constantly, yet new attacks were relentlessly launched.
A hushed silence gradually spreads over the audience. Finally, the timer goes off, and the referee, who has been observing from the sidelines, rises to his feet.
He takes a step forward, waiting for Lucien to put down the piece in his hand, pick up a pen and write something, then seal the paper in an envelope.
As if on cue, the people around me rustle and leave. I instinctively get up as well, feeling puzzled, and head towards Lucien, who is also departing.
MC: Is the match over?
Tumblr media
Lucien: Not yet, it's just that the official match time is up. Now the moves are sealed, and the match will resume in an hour.
MC: I see. So, what do you think?
Lucien: Although the situation is a bit tense right now, I've more or less deduced the strategy he'll likely use.
Tumblr media
He narrows his eyes, looking like a smug little fox.
MC: Wow, I knew you were good, but I'm blown away that you've been able to hold your own against the world champion for so long…
Lucien: Would you mind holding onto that compliment until the 26th move and telling me again later, MC?
MC: Um?
I suddenly figured something out, and in that instant, I found the answer in those confident eyes.
Lucien: By then, I'll have won.
=[Part 2]=
Lucien wins.
At the 21st move in overtime, Carl topples his cornered king piece and concedes defeat.
It's not that I never thought he would win, but seeing Lucien standing on the podium, the clear reality of his victory washes over me along with the tide of applause.
I clap with extra force, wanting to convey all my heartfelt congratulations to him.
MC: Congratulations, grand champion!
Tumblr media
As the award ceremony ends, after waiting by the side of the stage, I step forward and greet the person before me with a big hug.
An icy chill clings to him, yet the voice that falls upon my ear is incredibly gentle.
Lucien: [chuckles] I received all of MC's congratulations.
Lucien: Even though you were a bit far away, the way you clapped so enthusiastically was especially adorable, just like a little seal.
MC: Of course! As your girlfriend, I can't let myself be outdone by anyone else…
??: Mr. Lucien, congratulations.
A stranger's voice suddenly interrupts the conversation as Carl, dressed in a suit, walks over in surprise.
Carl: I'll always remember this match, I hope to see you again on the competition stage someday.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Thank you, there will be a chance.
Lucien nods politely, and only after watching the other person disappear into the crowd does he speak, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Lucien: Was that Carl?
MC: Hmm? Even a superbrain like you can have face blindness?
Lucien: Perhaps I was too focused on the chessboard, so I didn't pay attention to his appearance.
Lucien: Besides, his clothes seem completely different from what he wore this afternoon.
Seeing him explain earnestly, I can't help but laugh.
MC: [laughs] If I were Carl, I think I would be more hurt that my opponent, whom I faced for half a day, doesn’t remember me than about losing the match.
Tumblr media
MC: Speaking of which, you don't forget everyone you've played chess with, do you?
Tumblr media
Lucien: [stunned as if hit by a memory of someone from his distant past] …
It’s as if something leaps into the depths of those dark eyes along with my words, and they suddenly blink quickly.
Lucien: Not quite everyone.
MC: Wow, if you remember someone, they must be really impressive!
Lucien: Not at all.
Lucien: In fact, on most of the days we've played, he couldn't even win a pack of biscuits.*
MC: So, about the same level as me then~
I can't help but curve my lips into a smile, and it seems as though my rising smile also slowly melts that touch of indifference.
Tumblr media
Lucien: [chuckles] You're right, it's about the same level. But MC is special to me.
Lucien: Whether it's ‘biscuits', 'candy', or even 'unreasonable requests', you always manage to win them over in another way.
MC: [laughs happily] Hahaha, that friend of yours would probably think you're way too biased if he heard you say that!
Lucien smiles faintly as if my words allow him to vaguely picture that person before his eyes—
Tumblr media
Fuzzy... distant... yet somehow a little vivid.
Lucien: Perhaps, but all of those are just assumptions.
MC: Even if they are assumptions, aren't they still based on deductions from the past?
I hook my finger around his, gently swaying our hands together.
MC: Even if the past may be gone, isn't there still “something” from it that continues to run through your life in different forms;
MC: Accompanying you as you pass by and meet many amazing, yet lovely and warm people?~
Lucien: Of course, I have never denied that.
It was as though an imperceptible wound within those profound eyes had been quietly mended, allowing a trace of a smile to escape.**
Wanting to keep that smile lingering for a while longer, I wrinkle my nose.
Tumblr media
MC: But... I've clearly played chess with you too, and several different kinds! Yet the first person Professor Lucien thought of wasn't me!
Tumblr media
Lucien: …
Seeing his eyes widen slightly, I smile with satisfaction.
MC: Hmph, looks like I need to work harder! In that case, I'll start by learning 3D chess!
I take the prize chessboard from Lucien's hands, giving it a gentle shake.
MC: Please teach me, Teacher Lucien.
✂———————–
[T/N]
*: the biscuits!!! I'm sobbing ;-;, turns out Lucien still remembers Fan Zihang/Zack so clearly... I hope we'll get another mention of Fan Zihang/Zack on his birthday too huhu.
**: I'm taking liberties in translating this one 😂. The original line is “那双幽深的眼瞳里似有道小小裂隙被悄悄填上,终于泄 出一点笑意。” which if literally translated it will be “In that pair of deep and dark eyes, it was as if a small crack had been quietly filled up, finally revealing a hint of a smile.”. The 'crack' can symbolize an unhealed wound from the past. As it gradually fills, this wound is slowly mending, allowing him to release some of his past burdens and letting a hint of joy show through his eyes. Or, you can also think of it as a frozen lake that slowly melts and reveals a small crack, allowing the sunlight to fill in and showing what's in the water all this time (there's happiness from those past memories too).

the women of death note deserve better
so i just finished death note. i have Thoughts about the show. some good, some bad. its not the type of show i'd usually watch but there was something in it that kept me watching. but there was one aspect of the show that bothered me to no end, one that made me consider dropping the show more than once. and that's its treatment of its female characters.
now i know shonen isn't exactly known for writing women well. this isn't to say ALL shonen is like that, but the more popular ones definitely have this problem. the women are either sidelined, reduced to love interests, or aren't allowed to reach their full potential, and this can really be seen in the women of death note. for a show that prides itself on having complex, layered characters with depths that keep people talking two decades later, it sure does drop the ball when it comes to writing women. so here i'm gonna go through all the women of death note and how they were done dirty. keep in mind this is all referring to the anime, i haven't read the manga.
naomi misora
Tumblr media
starting off with the one that pissed me off the most. naomi had me intrigued from the moment she first appeared on screen. she was a former fbi agent who left her job because her asshole fiance convinced her it was too dangerous, and then blew off her suggestions (which ultimately lead to his death which. el oh fucking el). she was able to piece together that kira could control how his victims die. she could add a lot to the story given that she previously worked with L. she could've been a part of the task force and would help them piece together clues that would pin down kira. does she do all that? LOL NOPE. the writers decided she was too powerful and killed her off within two episodes of her introduction. now i know this is death note and a lot of characters die. but naomi's death pissed me off the most. here was a woman who had so much potential and could solve the case within two episodes and she's killed off. oh but at least she stars in a spinoff novel half the fandom won't read! isn't that just GREAT? look how much we love women guys!
yeah all this time later and i'm still pissed off about how they did her. naomi bby you deserve so much better.
misa amane
Tumblr media
OH BOY GET READY FOR A BIG ONE. so misa was actually the reason i wanted to watch death note because she's fucking gorgeous. i didn't have many expectations about how she'd be written considering this is a popular shonen, but even then i was disappointed. misa is the main female character of death note. she's presented as the second kira who has shinigami eyes, which gives her the power to see a person's name and lifespan by looking at their face. she was saved by a shinigami who was in love with her and got his notebook, and her current shinigami rem (more on her next) also has feelings for her. she worships kira because he killed her parents' murderer. she finds out light is kira because her shinigami eyes don't allow her to see the lifespan of a death note owner and as such asks him to make her his girlfriend.
misa misa misa. my gorgeous goth girl. you deserved to be written so much better. a second kira who has shinigami eyes? she could've been so cool. but the writers made 90% of her personality revolve around light and treated her as this dumb, impulsive girl who worships the ground light walks on. and light doesn't even treat her that well. he just uses her and takes his frustrations out on her. oh, and don't get me started on this bullshit
Tumblr media
look, i get that misa is a killer and had to be restrained. but WAS THIS FETISHY CRAP NECESSARY?? WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE FUCKING CROTCH STRAP?? when light was imprisoned he wasn't tied up like THIS. this is just another case of shonen authors being fucking weirdos with their female characters.
and in the end she kills herself because light dies. instead of letting her heal and live her life the author decides "welp, the man we based 90% of misa's character on is dead, time to kill her off too". just absolute bullshit. she deserved so SO much better.
rem
Tumblr media
rem, my gorgeous butch shinigami. she became my favourite character when she was introduced. i was actually surprised by how direct they were about her feelings for misa. i'd seen bits and pieces of remisa before and i thought it'd be one of those ships the writers dance around but they explicitly had her say she has feelings for misa. i was so surprised and happy at that. but of course, this is a popular shonen so i shouldn't have had high expectations. my problem with how they treated rem comes in her death. she dies after killing watari and L to extend misa's lifespan. if a shinigami extends a human's lifespan they die. now, i'm not gonna say her death is an example of bury your gays because gelus, the male shinigami who saved misa before, met the same fate. however, i will say its very Interesting that the only canonically lesbian character who explicitly declares her feelings for another woman dies BECAUSE of those feelings. and then she isn't even acknowledged by misa which is so weird considering how much rem helped her. there's no scene of misa even mentioning rem or mourning her death. she dies without anyone knowing. i do enjoy the doomed yuri aspect of remisa but i really do wish they'd have misa at least acknowledge rem's death.
wedy
Tumblr media
wedy, aka merrie kenwood, is a spy who joins the task force in the yotsuba arc. she's an expert at getting through security and is crucial in helping pin down higuchi as kira as she's the one who installs the bugs in yotsuba's meeting room and higuchi's cars. another cool female character with a lot of potential. you know what that means. TIME TO KILL HER OFF! wedy doesn't get much screentime and then dies within eight episodes of her introduction. which is slightly better than naomi. but still. i won't say this is also a case of misogynistic writing as aiber also dies. however, there is a pattern of having a female character with potential, not giving her enough spotlight, and killing her off shortly after her debut.
sayu yagami
Tumblr media
sayu, my poor bbygirl sayu. she's introduced as light's bubbly little sister. in the timeskip she goes to college. her most significant role is getting kidnapped so her father could give up the death note to mello's men, making her the classic damsel in distress. and the poor girl is so traumatized that she's in a catatonic state and has to be wheelchair bound and taken care of by her mother. oh, and there's also that weird comment matsuda makes about her which... really dude? sayu isn't AS badly done as she doesn't play much of a role beyond her kidnapping. but still, she also deserves so much better.
kiyomi takada
Tumblr media
i didn't think i'd be as pissed off about how they did a female character as i did about naomi and misa but BOY they proved me wrong. takada was light's girlfriend in college but she doesn't play a major role until the timeskip where she becomes kira's spokesperson. like misa, she worships kira. she's happy when she finds out light is kira and would do anything for him. so another woman who worships the ground light walks on. how original. she's supposed to be smart but they never demonstrate it. and need i mention that rivalry between her and misa? making two women catty to each other over a man who isn't even all that, how very typical. but what pissed me off the most was her kidnapping. that scene where mello asks her to take off all her clothes, and then she's left with nothing but a blanket? so fucking weird, i don't care if she's kira's spokesperson. this show has a history of treating its women weirdly and i'm not gonna believe this was anything but the author being weird once again. because what even was the point of that? and then she's killed by light to destroy all evidence. i'm saying this a lot at this point but takada also deserves better. she deserved to live up to her potential.
halle linder
Tumblr media
out of everyone, halle is treated the best and that's not saying much. she's a double agent serving as takada's bodyguard and a spy for the spk. she's also the only woman besides sayu and sachiko who survived till the end and wasn't killed off. which i just realised. out of all the women in this show, only THREE survive till the end. isn't that something? i think my only issue with halle is the lack of spotlight. which is a theme with these women.
i thought of adding sachiko but she isn't much of a character. but there you have it. i'm not sure how bad it is in other popular shonen. but death note is full of women who had potential but the author squandered it for the sole reason that they're women. and its so jarring because people can write essays on light, L, near, mello, etc. even MATSUDA had more care put into him than any of these women. which is a damn shame. these women deserve to be in a show that actually cared about them, where they can actually live up to their potential.
i don't dislike death note. it definitely has its strong points. but the treatment of its women is something i take issue with, very strongly. if the author wasn't a weirdo and a nasty misogynist i feel like these women would've been the complex characters they deserved to be.

I don't want to ask about your weiner but can I has some tojigumi screams that you want to screampt
Oh friend, I have so many tojigumi scrams.
First being, I think when he did come around, he was messing heavy with both of the Fushiguro kids, though we all know Megumi, he would get very jealous when Toji showed any favoritism towards Tsumiki. That always ended in him pouting, and Toji reminding him that he’s his baby, his good boy, and one day when he gets a little older he’ll understand.
When he does get older, obviously Toji isn’t around, but Megumi quickly finds himself in a similar dynamic with Gojo, but that’s not what we’re talking about here. (Though, I do think that’s when Megumi first let “daddy” slip when around Gojo, when he was fucking him.)
Toji is just such a nasty freak though, so very different from Megumi, but I can’t help but feel like when Megs comes onto him he loves to remind him that he’s just like him. Like when he’s just gotten home, hasn’t even showered, but Megumi still creeps into his room while he’s getting undressed. Toji gets off on knowing he’s corrupting his kid, and the fact that he’s hardly even there so Megumi is probably waiting around for him, which is why when he does come home, he’s so desperate, can’t even wait for him to clean up.
I cannot talk about tojigumi without mentioning that Toji 100% brings up his mom while fucking him, always saying how he looks like her, sounds like her, sometimes even feels like her and if Toji is drunk enough, he just calls Megumi by her name.
On the softer side, I think Toji treats Megumi special, takes him out to get something from the corner store, lets him have some of his liquor, and even shares a cigarette with him sometimes after sex. When he gets back from a job, he always brings both of them something (probably just some expired candy or something he found/stole, he’s not putting in too much effort) but when it’s just him and Megumi, he always has something extra to give him.
I can’t think about tojigumi without also thinking about tojimiki, and as they get older, I think half of why Meg’s becomes so protective of her is because he wants to be just like his daddy, and keep things close to home. They’re both fucking her eventually, and that’s when Megs finally understands what Toji was saying when he was younger, and honestly, he’s just glad she seems to prefer him over his dad, because that means he gets to have him all to himself.
On a darker note (rubs my hands together while cackling like a gremlin), something I have actually planned out in one of my fics and I think mentioned to you specifically, is if Toji was a drug addict, he is definitely making it his kids problem. Megumi would of course let him live with him, to keep him away from Tsumiki (because Megumi’s life is already spiraling and going down the drain, what’s letting his drug addicted father crash at his apartment) and undoubtedly, Toji will get Megumi involved and hooked on drugs as well.
Deep down, he fucking loves this, because he’s so sick of his kids acting like they’re fucking better than him —Megumi specifically, like he wasn’t cut from the same cloth— and only when he realizes Megumi is coming onto him does he realize just how much he’s fucked his kid up. He’s coked out, they’re both drunk, and Megumi is trying to suck him off and before he realizes it, he’s actually enjoying it.
That’s all I can conjure up at the moment, please feel free to add to this or share your own rotten brain worms because I love talking about this shit.
The way I could go so in depth on tojigumi and tojimiki is insane, and then how that parallels with them and Gojo once he kills their dad. The savior complex, the whole “I’m gonna take what was his now, because I’m better than him,” vibe that is so prevalent in the dynamic and of course, Megumi getting jealous when Gojo shows his sister more attention than him.
Hope my hollering satisfied you 🤍
(this is my weiner, ask me about it)

What do you think of the several people who dislike Chaol, on the basis of him being considered "boring" or "basic"?? I am a self-described Chaol superfan, so my blood always boils whenever I see these comments. Any thoughts?
Hi! I can absolutely relate to you saying your blood boils when you see that kind of stuff - I do the same and it's become a bit of an inside joke between me and my friends, lol!
Jokes aside, I have no problem with people saying they don't like his character but I think people saying he's basic is ridiculous, honestly.
He has his own story apart from his love interest - which I'll get onto in a bit - and quite possibly the most character growth out of everyone in the series. Throughout the series, he has to take apart his core beliefs and values (loyalty to the king, hatred of magic, keeping oaths etc.) and really think about if he was right about it all or not, which I don't think is "basic" at all. And in the end, he chose to put it all behind him, which takes a lot of strength in my opinion.
Also, a lot of first love interest kind of characters are normally just villanised in the narrative and, apart from maybe a scene or two, get no closure. With Chaol, that didn't happen. He makes amends, he apologises to Aelin and he comes back with an army that's a game-changer for the war. I wouldn't consider a character who does all that to redeem themselves to be basic or boring at all.
And he has his own personality outside of his love interest, which is quite rare these days, if I have to be honest. When he was with Aelin, he still had his own reservations about her. In QoS, he's not afraid to push back against her and argue (not defending the things he said, just pointing out that he has his own opinions outside of her). He falls in love with Yrene in ToD, yes, but that doesn't take away from his character at all because he's also working through all of his trauma and these ideas he thought were right but really weren't.
Getting onto Tower of Dawn now. Chaol's just become disabled and has to deal with all of the emotional baggage that comes with that. He doesn't deal with it perfectly, he lashes out at times and thinks of his injury as a prison at the beginning of ToD. He uses unhealthy coping mechanisms, like pushing his body to the limit just to forget. Some part of him is still angry at Aelin (as we see in ch 55 of ToD) and he has to let go of it.
All of that only makes him a more complex character: he's not dealing with it all in the way you would expect a "boring"/"basic" character to. He goes through all of this character development in ToD, looking at his injury differently, in a positive light, and if anyone read the whole book and still thinks of him as boring, I don't think any amount of my ranting will do that.
Anyways, I will now also be referring to myself as a self-described Chaol superfan. Thanks for sending an ask!
-- SLIGHTLY ACOTAR CRITICAL --
(To add to that, I think the "grumpy" love interest is a really common trope in YA and while Chaol does fall into that category, I'm glad he isn't also those "shadow daddy" love interests either (I'm looking at you ACOTAR). So often, I see people absolutely swoon over Rhysand / Cassian / Azriel and call characters like Chaol basic... which I don't understand AT ALL. Both character types can be written well but I think Chaol is far more fleshed out as his life doesn't revolve around his love interest - sorry, batboy lovers, don't come for me!)

As a fellow Az hater, can we take a minute to shit on him? I've already made my own opinions clear on him, and his complacency. However, the thing that makes me absolutely livid, beyond everything else he's done, is the fact that, despite him supposedly having the best friendship dynamic with Nesta according to so many people, he is so quick to throw her to the wolves when it comes to endangering her life.
This also reflects on his weird complex as well, I guess, but it's the scene where he argues that Elain 'shouldn't be exposed' to whatever kind of 'darkness' surrounds the trove, meanwhile he's perfectly happy to suggest Nesta doing it, actively undermining the healing and autonomy of both Nesta and Elain.
One sister is mentally, physically and emotionally not fit to go on adventures and search for ancient artefacts, while the other, from what we see, is, and Az, who's living with Nesta and cassian and should be well aware of this, decides they should convince her to do it just to stop Elain from doing so.
As a fellow Azriel hater, I couldn’t agree more. People like to claim he has this great dynamic with Nesta, but really, it’s just him treating her with the bare minimum of decency—which, given how everyone else around her acts, is something Nesta sadly isn’t used to. But that’s the issue: Azriel knows how much she’s suffering, and yet he’s so complacent when it comes to her mistreatment. He never stands up for her when it matters, whether it’s against Cassian’s constant badgering or the Inner Circle’s condescending attitudes.
The fact that he didn’t even get her a gift at Solstice just shows how low on his priority list she really is, despite the supposed “friendship” people seem to think they have. And let’s not forget the moment when he thought it was funny that she got shoved down the stairs. How is that remotely acceptable? He should be aware of how much she’s struggling, but instead, he just stands by and lets it happen, never stepping in to protect her when it really counts.
And that moment with the trove is exactly what reveals Azriel’s hypocrisy. He’s all about protecting Elain from the “darkness” of the trove but has no problem throwing Nesta into danger when she’s clearly not in the right place mentally or emotionally. It’s so infuriating—he’s perfectly fine with endangering Nesta’s life just to spare Elain, undermining both of their autonomy in the process. He’s supposed to be aware of what Nesta’s going through, living with her and Cassian, but he still pushes her into situations she’s not ready for, all to save his precious Elain. It’s like he sees Elain as this delicate flower who needs constant protection, while Nesta is just disposable in his eyes.
Let’s talk about that hike and how Azriel purposely packed Nesta’s bag heavier, knowing full well she’d be the one to carry it. It’s like he wanted her to struggle. It wasn’t some innocent mistake—Azriel knew exactly what he was doing. She’s being forced to train and rebuild herself, and instead of giving her even the smallest bit of support, he adds to her burden, literally. It just highlights how little he respects her. Even if they weren’t on the best terms, common decency would’ve meant not deliberately making her situation worse.
And don’t even get me started on the scene where Rhysand yells at Nesta and threatens her. Azriel, who’s supposedly this honorable, morally upright figure, just stands by and lets it happen. Not a word, not a glance, nothing. For someone who’s supposed to be observant, calculating, and protective, he sure had no problem watching Rhys humiliate her. If Azriel had any real respect or care for Nesta, he would’ve at least tried to step in, even if Rhys is his High Lord. He’s so quick to defend Elain, but when it comes to Nesta being verbally attacked by Rhysand, he stays completely silent, once again proving how little he values her well-being.
It’s like he’s willing to treat Nesta like garbage just to keep in Rhysand’s and Feyre’s good graces. There’s no friendship or camaraderie there—just complacency and a willingness to pile onto Nesta’s struggles.

CuteGuy Would Prefer Greatly If HotGuy Never Ever Had Any Nice Things, But Especially Not His Good Friend And Roommate Cubfan135 (1/3)
I absolutely refuse to go through an add italics to the tumblr versions of my fics but grian is so angry all of the time it was necessary in this case
next
“So let me get this straight.” Grian, well, CuteGuy stood over HotGuy, the hero’s head pinned under his own boot. It was times like these that Grian considered ditching the boots altogether; wrapping his talons around any hero’s face like this would be an absolute sight, but alas, he wasn’t trying to get painful calluses all over his feet. Grian was sure HotGuy could escape this if he wanted to; he’d just have to roll to knock Grian off, but he stayed still, staring up at Grian with those big, pathetic eyes. “You want my help with your romantic endeavors. You want to pretend fight so you can pretend win, yeah? Impress that special someone?”
Grian knew who it was, of course. Not because HotGuy announced it or because it was on the news, no, but because this certified idiot had set his sights on Cub. Cub! His roommate Cub. What could HotGuy even want from a guy like Cub- just a guy! A human, not even a conventionally attractive human, who hardly knew anything about heroes and villains other than their names! Cub, who worked a shitty job with a shitty manager, who basically did nothing but go on little walks and hang out at home- there was nothing about Cub that stood out, so why in the fuck was HotGuy so- Grian hissed, pressing a little harder on HotGuy’s head, who grunted. HotGuy didn’t get to have Cub. Cub wasn’t- HotGuy didn’t even know him! He didn’t get to take Cub- his Cub- and turn him into some kind of hero worshiper!
“Stop looking at me like that!” Grian’s anger reached its boiling point, though HotGuy didn’t flinch, looking more disappointed than anything.
To his credit, he did look away, pursing his lips, “So I take it you’re not a fan of the idea.” The infuriating amicable lilt to his voice stayed even despite his face being crushed against the pavement, and Grian wanted nothing more than to choke it out of him.
“What gave you that idea?” Grian snarled, and HotGuy shrugged.
“When you’re really pissed off you start drooling, and honestly, it’s quite gross. Are you stressed? Have you considered Xanax? Does wonders for me on bad days.”
“My insurance won’t renew my prescription and my doctor fucking sucks.”
“Ah, I feel you buddy. I mean, I basically live in a hospital, but sometimes I need some more benign stuff and it just feels like the whole system is out to get you! Don’t even get me started on before I got into the hero business, gosh. Well, if it makes you feel any better, you were far from my first choice. I asked The Goat, but he told me that would be a monumental waste of his time, Mumbo told me he wouldn’t be convincing enough and also to stop calling him he’s retired, I haven’t seen Worm Man for years but I’m still looking-“
“How many people did you ask before me?” Grian tried not to be offended, but honestly, he was very offended- HotGuy has the gall to ask favors then admit Grian wasn’t his first choice? Why not? He knew why. But why not???
“Anyone I could find, really. I mean, heroes are easy enough to track down, but a lot of them are busy and also don’t give a fuck, but villains kinda just wander around and cause problems wherever. Though, I figured if I stood here long enough you’d jump me like you did last time. Hey, by the way, if you see Poultry Man, will you tell him I’d like to talk?”
Grian seethed; he had seen HotGuy up on the apartment complex where they had fought last and assumed he was looking for Cub- was Grian really that predictable?
“The last thing Poultry Man would want to do is help you impress some guy you don’t even know- what’s the deal anyway? Don’t answer that, I don’t care.”
“Hey! I know Cub plenty! We had such a nice walk the night you broke my visor and then a lovely lunch date the next day! Well- maybe not a date. I don’t know, I never asked what he thought. I kind of don’t want to know, though. And I wasn’t going to ask Poultry Man to help me do anything, I just wanted to talk to him about all the chickens he released into the poor woman’s home- it’s not important-“
“Poor woman? She’s a fucking asshole.”
“It’s not important,” Scar strained, and Grian felt the tiniest bit vindicated, “All I meant to say is that I would feel bad beating the shit out of Poultry Man, even if it was just pretend. He’s just a misguided guy in a chicken costume.
“Misguided?” Grian’s hiss cracked into a higher pitch, “Poultry Man is EVIL. Poultry Man could CRUSH YOU. What makes you think you’re any match against him, huh? Really.”
“I mean, his costume looks a bit bulky, not great for maneuvering. I doubt he can see very well out of the mask, too. I don’t know, maybe he’s like, secretly ripped or something, but I still don’t think he could do much damage.”
“You’ll regret underestimating him when you’re taking your last breaths under his claws.”
“Oh, I hope not! I just wanted to chat about where he got those chickens, but you’re nice for standing up for him! You’re a good friend, CuteGuy.”
“I-“ Grian felt his body short circuit for a moment, everything replaced with the type of fury that can only be released by picking someone up and violently shaking them. HotGuy was perfectly polite about it, enduring Grian’s fit of rage before hanging somewhat limply in his arms, not even using his own legs to stand after Grian was done. HotGuy stared. Grian stared back.
“You’re strong.”
“Fuck you.” Grian dropped HotGuy, who just collapsed, wholly unready to support his own weight. Fine. Good. With a few strong beats of his wings, Grian took off, leaving HotGuy firmly in the dust. Flying was good and the evening breeze was good and if shaking someone annoying wasn’t enough to make them stop being annoying, then it was time to let it go. Something Grian was famously bad at.
When he looked back HotGuy was still just laying there, INFURIATINGLY, just staring at the sky! He wasn’t even looking at Grian, he was just completely zoned out-! What was his damn problem?
Grian’s boots cracked against the cement on either side of HotGuy’s waist, and HotGuy screamed, so genuinely frightened, Grian was pretty sure the noise would color his memory for the rest of his life. “Where are you meeting him?”
“What?” HotGuy squeaked, and the sound was just as beautiful.
“Where do you want me to be for your stunt?”
“I-I was going to meet Cub at the City Park-“
“Are you crazy? Are you trying to get me arrested? You’ll meet here, in the parking lot across the street at 9:00. And I don’t do play fights, but if you shoot me I’ll rip you a new one. And I want $500.”
“That’s- a lot of money-“
“You won’t miss it. You and your piece of shit rich friends spend that kind of change like it’s nothing on designer clothes and cocaine. And I want to see your sorry face when you’re forced to cough it up after I flatten your ass then steal your man.”
“You- why are you so mean to me? Hey- you are not allowed to-“ Grian didn’t let him finish, beating his wings hard enough to batter HotGuy’s face before taking off, definitively this time.
Perfect. This was going to be fun.

Please share all of your Sirius and Bellatrix thoughts ♥️
I have way too many, darling.
The TLDR is it is our choices that show us who we truly are, far more than our abilities. The long version is under the cut.
When reading about them I usually prefer stories where their original 8-9 year gap is preserved (it annoys me to no end when people write the Order and the Death Eaters as entirely made up of people in the same couple of years in Hogwarts —really? Was the conflict exclusively waged by child soldiers? Were Dumbledore and Voldemort just chilling before 1977, when they decided to start recruiting?). With that being said, I can also enjoy fics where - for shipping purposes - their ages are more compatible, to make them share time in Hogwarts or during the First Wizarding War.
I think they are very, very alike personality-wise. The narrative draws some delicious writing parallels between them, both physically and in their expressions, vices and virtues, and choices. Directly between them, might I add. The author underlines the difference between Bella and Narcissa more than once, we're meant to see it, and similarly we're meant to see the similarities between Bella & Sirius.
They are haughty, passionate, powerful, competent, arrogant, bright, much more intelligent than the fandom thinks they are. In general, they suffer from the stigmatization that many characters - but some people in real life do too - that someone who is intense and impulsive cannot possibly be as intelligent as people who are meek, soft-spoken, generally more controlled. Think what the fandom does to Sirius vs Remus and Bella vs her sisters, when every arrow points to the fact that they are actually the cleverest in these pairings.
They are both some shade of mentally ill, and not because of the curse of the Blacks - half the Blacks went mad didn't they? What's the saying? Every time a Black is born the gods flip a coin. god the Targaryen-Black parallels are gold - Sirius is very likely horribly depressed in OOTP, something no one around him seems to understand, infuriatingly. The only one that seems to get it is Harry, who has the literal Dark Lord living in his brain (= bigger problems to deal with). Bella is... I don't know what she is, ask me after my psychiatry module next year, but my money is on PTSD after Azkaban - after all, she didn't have the escape of an Animagus form behind bars. She would also very likely be victim-blamed for these different feelings, which would lend itself to a delicious nobody else in the world understands us but us type of post-Azkaban dark!fic which I would love to read.
They are both skilled at magic, and while they might despise each other for their respective political views, they respect each other because of this. Bella is probably above him in terms of magical power and skill, because she's 9 years older and because of Voldemort's training, but Sirius seemed to be keeping up quite well with her during their fight in the DoM.
Speaking of which, I am sure that Bellatrix's scream of triumph was due to her winning their duel, not because she thought she had killed him and that is probably the single thing I love the most about HBC's interpretation of her in the movies. That look. 10/10.
I am of the opinion that Bella is all bark and no bite when it comes to certain members of her family, especially her sisters. Sure, she might say that she wants to prune her family tree but 30 years later in the beginning of DH, she still calls Andromeda sister. I'm sure she would want nothing more than to put him under lock and key for the rest of his life and never let him escape, not kill him. And, to me, the way Sirius speaks of his family is very interesting. I'm sure he firmly believes that he hates them, but his actual feelings are more complex than that. You can hate someone and still desire their love, their respect. You can hate that they are the only people in the world who understand you - and hate yourself more in turn, for it.
Sirius seems to me like someone haunted by his own darkness. He, much like Harry, would be constantly worried that he's becoming like them. I'm sure it's a weak spot for him and I wish we had heard more bickering, or at least a full interaction between Bella and Sirius (I feel like she would claim him as hers, underline how much he cannot escape his own blood, even just to mock him/unsettle him in battle). But what Dumbledore says to Harry is true: it doesn't matter how alike they are, it's their choices that matter much more. And I feel like this is why the two of them would never reconcile in canon. They stand for different things.
I also think there might be some - and I know Freud is controversial nowadays, but bear with me - penis envy, on her part. Because Sirius was born the heir - something she would have given her left hand to be: to be born and die a Black instead of being expected to marry into another family - and he squandered it all away by consorting with werewolves and mudbloods. But no. He got everything and pissed on it, and it's just not fair. And by choosing not to come back, even in the two years after Regulus' death, he made sure that the Black Family name will die with him- and I think that is just something she can never ever forgive him.
Now. Everybody knows I don't like TCC and my preferred view of Bella is someone with fertility issues, even to the point of being sterile.
[I read an amazing fanfic once and a line from it stuck in my brain - "If I can't be life, then I'll be death"]
But. If we do see it as canon. This is also the reason why - despite being overjoyed at Delphi's birth - I am convinced that she wished for a boy when she was pregnant. If she had a boy with the Dark Lord, who couldn't possibly give them his name, the House of Black would have an heir. This is also the reason why I don't thing she was necessarily opposed to having children with Rodolphus - the "spare" would have been her heir.
Bellatrix would say that Regulus was her favourite cousin, but truth be told, it was really Sirius whom she respected more - at her core, in my opinion, Bellatrix is really only someone who respects power. Sirius is like her that way.
But Bellatrix is clearly a cruel person, which Sirius is not (or at least, he tries not to be: Kreacher and Snape are two very particular cases of people who are mean to him back). Also, Sirius' view of the world is much more egalitarian - If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals. Bellatrix is clearly someone who sees the world in terms of hierarchies, and lives within them (see: how she acts around Voldemort and what is implied of her treatment of house-elves who obey their masters: there is a scale and some serve others, and as long as they do so well they have certain rights; disobey, you get punished).
(Bellatrix is somewhat a feminist character but let's be real- she's not a revolutionary. She went to the Dark Lord and showed him just how powerful she was - aka my wand is bigger than all these male DEs' - and he said "okay, fair, I'll give you the Mark", thereby freeing herself. She is not a "equal representation for women inside terrorist organizations!!" type of girlie)
I also love how her death parallels Sirius'. It's thematically beautiful and it excuses her death coming at the hands of one Molly Weasley (who could never ever in a million years have beaten her on skill alone). She dies because she is arrogant. It's one of her traits. Overconfidence. She was always meant to die like that.
[coincidentally one of the reasons why she would not be a hufflepuff like some suggest: this woman is not humble]
I could go on, but I think I've rambled enough.
P.S. Let's not sleep on the fact that the two of them together would be hot.

It's Funny How A Decade Ago People Were Ranting How Sexist One Piece Was During The Dressrosa Saga (And Now We Have A Character Like Bonney Who Is Doing Extraordinary Things)
Tumblr media
I remember all the discourse back in the Dressarosa arc about how sexist Oda was and how he never let his females do anything. Seriously, it makes me think if the series ended around there it would have probably gotten a reputation from those people for being quote of quote sexist. The things ranged from not giving the women enough fights to damseling to female villains getting redeemed easily to ugly and older women not getting good treatment to you name it everything they could think of. Ever since then I think One Piece itself has refuted a lot of the complaints had then by people who probably won't admit they judged too early.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since then we have gotten peak female characters, even one people deny is female due to ideology. But we got peak interesting characters that people love and show themselves to be enduring characters who defy everything that Dressrosa critics say females in One Piece are usually restricted in. They have been shown to be physical fighters and have shown to have their own stories outside of romance despite still being tied with men. I say that even some women characters who are mothers and wives and sometimes not even attractive can have interesting characters.
Tumblr media
I take for example Chiffon who is shown to be a mother and a wife, but she also has something outside of it where she endure years of abuse due to being Lola's twin because she walked out of an arranged marriage. And again she uses her skills to help subdue her mother when she goes on a rampage even when she wanted nothing to do with her anymore. Also her relationship with her husband is just enduring and how he goes the extra mile to save her from one of her own brothers who was going to kill her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I would like to add Big Mom and Brulee who both get complexity despite being antagonists and ugly. Big Mom in particular due to she could have been one big fat joke when in reality she really is someone who is a product of people who failed her that it turned her into the woman she is today. She truly was a woman with mental problems who could have been a good person if she had good direction but now she directs a household where her children fear her and are under her whim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also lastly we got female attractive villains that didn't turn good like Ulti and Black Maria, while they did have redeeming qualities they still remained villains to the end. Ulti was even willing to go physical with male protagonists like Luffy.
Tumblr media
Even though it's been over a decade since Dressrosa, I still remember those inane arguments and I think how judging this series too quickly in the middle comes off as foolish especially when you see later stuff. This especially comes to female characters because again people underestimate what Oda has in surprise and how he can grow.

So I finally finished watching Arthur Canon Doyle's Sherlock Holmes from 1968. Rambling, unedited thoughts below the cut.
Even with only 6 out of the 16 episodes surviving, it's extremely obvious how rushed and low-budget this series was. The camera work is shoddy (and at times outright bizarre, like why did we need a closeup of the sidewalk pavement) and while I mostly forgive the audio problems because these episodes were lucky to survive at all, sometimes it's pretty clear the unevenness existed when it originally aired. The production values by every metric, frankly, suck, but this is known. I have nothing to add on that, it's simply a case that it did not at all overcome the constraints of time and budget. These problems are really not that important to me, I've honestly watched and enjoyed worse productions 😂 But it's still worth mentioning for anyone thinking about watching.
Some of the acting by some of the people who were not Peter Cushing and Nigel Stock was...not great. I won't name names, but be prepared for that if you're a first-time viewer.
The writing is horribly, horribly uneven! I can't stress this enough - I have no doubt that it was also a victim of how rushed this production was, but it is easily the worst component of the series. It means that even the most compelling mysteries are often bogged down by bad dialogue or incorrect pacing (too fast or too slow at the wrong times).
There are moments when it's brilliant, with lovely reveals or genuinely funny lines! But these only make me sadder when it fails, flopping around like a dying fish.
However, the worst failure of the writing is how it treats Watson. Poor Nigel Stock was doing his utmost to bring the proper complexity to Watson, only to be foiled by terribly uneven writing that in one episode gave us a true Watson and in another gave us a slack-jawed idiot being spoonfed Sherlock's deductions even by their clients. Again, the moments where he's written well are perfect (him telling Sherlock 'no' when Sherlock equates skull size with intelligence 😂👏😎❤️), but the moments where he's not are...painful (Sherlock's looking out the window down at the people in the street and Watson's all '😱😱 how did you know there was a person outside?? Genius!!' 😖). Next time I'll have to pay attention to which writers were credited, maybe that has something to do with it....
But Peter Cushing is fantastic, because he always was, he didn't know how to give a bad performance, and he always met Nigel Stock halfway, so at the very least, their scenes together always shine even when the dialogue as written let them down - they kept the correct vibe in action and their body language and tone always conveyed the sense of camaraderie and affection that Holmes and Watson should always have. I still prefer Andre Morell in the role of Watson, but I grew very, very fond of seeing these two together, particularly in the last episode, The Blue Carbuncle. It's worth watching just for them, in my opinion.
All in all, I sound really down on it, but it's watchable. It tried hard to be a faithful adaptation despite the issues, the two main actors did their best with what they had (Peter Cushing seemed to be having fun playing Sherlock again despite the series' problems, and it shows!), and all in all, the good stuff makes it worth sitting through the bad stuff, at least for a Sherlock Holmes and/or Peter Cushing fan. I'd actually say that I'm sadder now about most of the episodes being lost than I was before, because I feel like it improved with each episode (the writing mostly).
Irrelevant side note, but is it just me, or was there something going on with Peter Cushing's teeth in the Blue Carbuncle? I didn't notice it in any of the others, but it sounded like he was whistling his S's far more than usual, and the few glimpses I got they looked uneven on top, which they are not in any other picture or show I've seen. Not important, just curious because I'm obsessed with Cushy trivia 🥴😂
Anyway, yes, this doesn't rank with the best Sherlock Holmes media, but it can be very fun and I'm glad I watched it. I'll be keeping it for future viewing. Next is the continued hunt to find a copy of The Masks of Death! 🥳

KAMEN RIDER DEMONS FUCKS
But he also reveals the problems with some of Revice's design decisions
Tumblr media
Okay, so, cards on the table, Kamen Rider Revice has some of my favorite Kamen Rider designs. When they work, they are these slick, cool, iconic designs. It is a season that does legend rider designs the best, integrating the designs without being too overbearing (or just being the other riders). Jeanne is probably the best rider girl design, it's all so rad.
Kamen Rider Revice also has some of the worst Kamen Rider designs ever. Whether it be Live's highlighter yellow, or Over Demon's bullshit, some of these suits really suck. To be fair, I think the series is more hits than misses, but still.
That brings me to this thread's topic. Kamen Rider Demons. This is an ancillary rider introduced fairly early on into the series, and is a rider system that jumps around a lot, being basically Fenix's main rider system. However, the initial suit is primarily used by our boy Hiromi. And, to be honest, this design is rad as hell.
Tumblr media
The undersuit initially has this muscly texture, looking like tendons strewn about. This muscly texture is also on the belt, tying it into that design as well. From there, the red muscles are strategically covered by a mixture of blue and bluish silver armor. It plays on the classic Spider-Man color combo to great effect. It all works so well. However, the main Vistamp gives the spider web armor on the torso and head, which is intelligently set up in the neutral black, with the other colors being the same silver and red on the rest of the body. This webbing also has an asymmetry, giving an extra visual appeal to the suit, but has a simple, nearly smooth texture, helping to not leave the suit over detailed. Plus, the whole suit has a sharp, intimidating, militaristic feel, especially exemplified by the permanently angry front eyes, flanked by some extra spider eyes on the side, glowing in a clear blue through the webbing. It's so cool! You think it would be too busy, but it somehow all meshes so well together. I would love to see him in Spider-Verse.
From there, a bit of history is given to the suit design with... KAMEN RIDER VAIL
Tumblr media
This suit is militaristic, but in a different way. Covered in metallic armor, he wears a baggy undersuit. This both gives the suit a more aged feel (It's meant to be an older precursor to the modern rider systems) and gives the armor the freedom to be more complex. It integrates a darker silver than the main Demons and copper for the Kabuto parts. I do really enjoy this suit. However, it's important to note, because both of these suits are a part of the history of my least favorite suit in the (main) show.
OVER DEMONS
Tumblr media
Over Demons basically just slaps the two suits together to poor effect. The undersuit is unchanged from Demons, and the torso armor is nearly unchanged from Vail, and they do not mix. The Vail armor adds 2 new colors, a new silver and bronze, all of which fight for your attention. Plus, the detail goes overboard, the torso armor adding just a bit too much texture that was gone in the main demons suit. What doesn't help is that the helmet, newly designed for the suit, adds 2 NEW COLORS, a light blue and a bluish white. It is too much.
And this is the problem with many of Revice's slapped together suits (even some of the main suits if you dislike Thunder Gale). It slaps two aesthetics together that do not mesh at all. Another great example of this is Evil/Live. The undersuit is really detailed and has a lot of colors, but the smooth black torso armor balances it all out. Then live adds a shiny white and highlighter yellow for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They use reuse to either over detail the designs, have too many colors or both. That's not to say reuse is bad, it isn't. And I get it, Revice was strapped for budget. However it can be done well. Evility Live uses the Evil undersuit and mixes it with the Holy Live armor to great effect. Destream uses the century suit, which is in a neutral white with some red details, and gives it a cool blue touch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It can be done, but Revice sometimes just doesn't. However, that doesn't mean that Kamen Rider Demon's suit was cool enough for me to spend too much money on an action figure of it.
