y/ndevils00 hello fellow devils hockey sufferers! today our dear boys in red (and white) played against the NY Islanders. they didn’t do good.
to start us off, i have a couple super sexy warmup pics of my uber sweet and very in need of a haircut boyfriend, rowdy! that girl behind him is so me every time i see him 🤩
to follow that, the first penalty of the game tonight was awarded to said boyfriend! oh how i love a bad boy 🤭 he sat behind the stanchion and later admitted it was to hide from my camera, but jokes on him, i got a pic anyways!
next slide, we have captain swiss with his tongue out. I LOVE THAT SLUT!
up next, we have haulaback girl with the ONLY devils goal of the night! (i told you we suffered) so happy for my uncle haula (we are not related in any form)
and lastly, we have my wonderful marino (and the diamonds), making the facial expression that sums up how i was feeling the entire night!
we inevitably lost, 5-1, to the island dwellers. better luck thursday boys!
tagged jackhughes, nicohischier, ehaula and john.marino97
ehaula thank you niece! (we are not related in any form)
y/ndevils00 you’re so welcome! i appreciate you keeping us from getting shutout!
john.marino97 why that picture? seriously WHY?
y/ndevils00 why NOT?
john.marino97 when i get a penalty, i get sprayed with water or smacked with a newspaper, but when hughesy gets a penalty, you make out with him for about half of intermission?
y/ndevils00 i support jack’s rights. but more importantly, i support jack’s wrongs.
jackhughes it’s true, she loves when i do bad things
y/ndevils00 @/jackhughes once again, not putting your dishes in the dishwasher is not “bad” and i do not love it. it’s annoying.
jackhughes you said you loved my hair
y/ndevils00 i lied.
jackhughes wow, this betrayal runs deep. idk how i’ll ever recover from this stab in the back
y/ndevils00 i think you’ll be fine later 👀
trevorzegras gross
nicohischier did you just call me a slut?
y/ndevils00 yes. i can change it though; slut, whore, whatever you’d prefer to be called.
nicohischier is my name an option?
y/ndevils00 no, sorry, there’s been a unanimous vote to eliminate that option
nicohischier what?! who voted?
y/ndevils00 me.
user3 i love that at least half the pics are usually always jack 😭
user57 she feeds us so well 😩🫶
dawson1417 i didn’t make the post?!
y/ndevils00 you didn’t do anything of note. do better.
jamie.drysdale i don’t go here, but i look forward to these posts
y/ndevils00 aww jameson! you’re so sweet 🤭 come visit me soon!
jamie.drysdale @/trevorzegras I GOT A Y/N NICKNAME BEFORE YOU! IN YOUR FACE Z!
jamie.drysdale and of course! i’ll try and make it out to jersey asap!
y/ndevils00 oh, trevor has a nickname!
trevorzegras @/y/ndevils00 i do?! you’ve never called me it! what is it?!
y/ndevils00 @/trevorzegras what are you talking about? i call you it all the time, satan’s favorite child!
trevorzegras @/jackhughes is it too late for me to take back my advice about telling her about your feelings? she’s mean
jackhughes @/y/ndevils00 @/trevorzegras why can’t you two just get along?
y/ndevils00 @/trevorzegras you love me, i bake you lemon cake in the summer! if jack were to break up with me, you’ll never have that again
trevorzegras @/jackhughes ya know what? on second thought, she can stay

Breathe In, Bliss Out: The Unbeatable Benefits of Fresh Air at Home
Tumblr media
Hey there, cozy dwellers and fresh-air enthusiasts! In the fast-paced world we live in, it's easy to overlook the simple joys, like opening a window and letting in a breath of fresh air. Today, let's cozy up and chat about the incredible benefits of inviting the great outdoors into our homes. Spoiler alert: it's not just about getting a lungful of oxygen; it's about unlocking a treasure trove of well-being and tranquility.
The Power of Oxygen:
Let's kick things off with the OG of fresh air benefits: oxygen. Your body craves it like your morning coffee, and no, that's not an exaggeration. Fresh air oxygenates your blood, giving you a natural energy boost that even the strongest espresso can't quite replicate. So, throw those windows open and let the oxygen infusion begin!
Mood Makeover:
Feeling a bit "meh" lately? A dose of fresh air might be just the pick-me-up you need. The great outdoors is like nature's mood enhancer, releasing those happy hormones and bidding adieu to stress. It's like a magic spell for turning 'meh' into 'heck yeah!'
Beauty Sleep 2.0:
Say hello to the unsung hero of a good night's sleep: fresh air. A well-ventilated room can do wonders for your beauty sleep, turning your bedroom into a cozy cocoon of serenity. It's like Mother Nature herself is tucking you in for the night.
Brainpower Unleashed:
Need to boost your brainpower? Look no further than the sweet embrace of fresh air. Open windows equal increased circulation, and increased circulation equals a sharper mind. So, the next time you're feeling a bit foggy, step outside or crack a window – your brain will thank you.
Detox for the Home:
Our homes deserve a detox session too, right? Fresh air isn't just for us; it's a breath of relief for our living spaces. It sweeps away those stagnant vibes, leaving your home feeling lighter, brighter, and oh-so-refreshing.
Practical Tips for Infusing Fresh Air Bliss:
Daily Dose of Vitamin D: Take a few minutes each day to soak in the sun. Whether it's a morning coffee on the porch or an afternoon stroll, let the sun kiss your skin and your spirits.
Window Wonderland: Make it a habit to crack open those windows daily. Even in colder months, a few minutes of fresh air can do wonders for your indoor air quality.
Green Allies: Bring the outdoors in with some leafy companions. Indoor plants not only add a touch of greenery but also contribute to better air quality.
So, there you have it, my fellow fresh-air aficionados – the secret sauce to a healthier, happier home. It's as simple as opening a window, stepping outside, and letting nature work its magic. Your body, mind, and home will thank you for this easy and cozy upgrade. Now, go ahead, take a deep breath, and let the good vibes flow.

Hello and welcome back! May I request hcs for dormleaders with a s/o who wears shades a lot till' they found out that everyone in their middle school wanted to gouge their beautiful eyes out beacuse some are jealous or wanting to sell it to the market? Thank u!
(Yes I am referencing the eys from Gojo from JJK)
I haven't really watched Jujutsu Kaisen (tho I watched sukuna and gojo scenes in YT) but I already know Gojo and Sukuna, seeing the thirst tweets on Twitter back then. I plan on watching it once it's totally finished. (But seriously Gojo’s eyes are so pretty) Thank you for the request and I hope you like this!~
Dorm Leader Headcanons
Tumblr media
Riddle Rosehearts
He'll had to admit. The first time he met you, he almost chop off your head for wearing those shades all day. Even at night, much to his utter disbelief. Being the strict abide-to-the-rules person he was back then, he ordered you to take them off. Seeing those eyes had startled him for dear life.
This was the time he finds out everything you've been through because of those eyes. Constantly in danger for people in your school who might possibly attack you. The redhead was upset as you predicted. You further explained more about your eyes and how those shades affect your vision.
Riddle quietly observed you. How come you are so strong despite all the pain you have been through? The redhead held your hands and pecked your lips.
Even himself was flustered with his own actions, he wasn't really good at expressing his feelings for you but he'll try his best. Seeing how he was doing his own way of comforting someone, you giggled at the cuteness of your boyfriend.
"I'm not strong physically but with my magic, I'll make sure those who have ill intensions towards you will have their heads cut off."
Tumblr media
Leona Kingscholar
This lion never spoke a word about it as he respects your space. Until you decided to open it up to him. That sunglasses didn't really bothered him the slightest except when he discovered you even wear it in the dark especially at night much to his chagrin.
Can you even see in that especially in the dark? He'll just huff at the idea that popped in his mind. It is definitely impossible for a human like you to see clearly in the dark.
When he thought you were just an odd herbivore, he was taken aback when you suddenly opened up your past and explained more about your eyes.  Both of you were lying down his bed cuddling, when he crawled atop of you stopping you from your story.
As he held your face, both staring into each others eyes for a moment. Leona's face was blank yet so many emotions are going through his eyes. Yet you recognize anger, worry and fear. Knowing many thoughts were running in his head, you lean your face close and your lips met with his and that calm his mind. Leona's body became relaxed as he bury his face to the side of your neck.
"I may not always be beside you, but just call my name. I'll be sure to be there."
Tumblr media
Azul Ashengrotto
Azul merely shook his head at how violent land dwellers were. He have heard stories of how humans can be cruel ever since he was small. But to think you were a target just because of your eyes is what made him distraught. Your boyfriend silently hugged you from behind as he thought of the possibilities of you being targeted once more but here in Twisted-Wonderland.
He would suggest you to have a contract with him to hide the true appearance of your eyes. In exchange of it, you will have to spend your entire life with him. He offered this, his cheeks bright pink and shaky voice.
You let a little laugh at what your lover what implying. Pecking his lips, you held his hands and stare at his bluish-gray eyes.
"Darling, I would love the thought but that will not change the effect of how I see the world. I would also love to spend the rest of my life with you but marriage can wait."
Azul had a huge smile as he peppered your neck with kisses. If ever someone planned on laying a hand on you, your lover will certainly pay them a visit with the twins. In the end, he would suggest to you to atleast have Jade and Floyd near you at all times to which you rejected.
Tumblr media
Kalim Al-Asim
Kalim would be that type of person who is very vocal of things. He would bug you about why you wore shades all the time. Upon catching a glimpse of your eyes, he was stunned. This soft boy loves complimenting your eyes despite not knowing the story behind those. Learning how others wanted to take your eyes just for their own benefit or out of jealousy, he'll shower you with lots of attention and affection.
Kalim is the type of person who'll empathize with someone who has experience things he himself didn't.  He'll even apologize even if it wasn't his fault.
This boy would even cry for you which made you comfort him and tell he shouldn't feel responsible.  There were times you thought he was too good that others may use this against him.
The next day,  a stressed out Jamil will approach you to question why Kalim suddenly wanted to buy lots of shades. Hearing this you immediately run to find your boyfriend to stop him.
"They say jewels and gold are have far more worth but for me, your worth is more that those things."
Tumblr media
Vil Schoenheit
Vil thought those shades was just part of your fashion and it looked good on you. It may have startled him before, that you wore it the whole time until Rook pointed it out to him.
He loves putting different shades of eyeshadows that compliments your eyes. It didn't help that your boyfriend will stare heatedly at yours, making you feel shy.
After hearing what you've been though back in your world, he understood how it is to be envied by others for something they don't have nor feel threatened by someone. But to the point of wanting their eyes out of jealousy or to sell them?
The thought of his s/o being in danger back then all because of their eyes, he felt sick and disgusted. Who in the world would gouge out someone's eyes? (cougheyesonmecough). Vil would then press on to know if there are ever people following you lately. To which you reassured no one was.
Also being aware on how the sunglasses affects your vision, your lover made sure to tag you along to buy different kinds that will fit to your outfits. You just let yourself be dragged by your boyfriend seeing how fired up he was when it comes to fashion and makeup.
Tumblr media
Idia Shroud
At the beginning, Idia was creeped out when you wore shades all the time. Be it during History class, Physical Education, even Alchemy (much to Crewel's dismay).  Upon discovering your eyes, he was fascinated by them.
When he find out how people back in your middle school wanted your eyes just to sell them for their own profit made this lovable boyfriend of yours speechless at human greed. He would literally made a special glasses just to hide your unique eyes.
A small part of him was guilty that he felt like he didn't deserve someone like you. But hearing your story, a surge of determination overcame him.
You tried to convince him that he doesn't need to build one for him, but he was already gone by the time Ortho told you.
Much to your surprise, the glasses let you see normally than you usually would whenever you don't have your shades.
Idia would explain to you the other functions it can do and the precautions. He even handed you the contacts just in case. Moved by the efforts of your usual gloomy boyfriend who is now , you happily kissed your boyfriend who suddenly turned into a blabbering mess at the sudden kiss.
"I may not be so reliable but I'll make sure to protect you from the shadows..."
Tumblr media
Malleus Draconia
Your eyes is what made a lasting impression for Malleus. It was as if those eyes could swallow his whole being despite you being a human. Hearing this all from you, he wasn't surprise that your fellow humans would try to gouge out your eyes. Humans are fickle and easily swayed by their desires. Jealousy was an ugly thing.
Caressing your cheek, he kissed both of your eyelids as he spoke. "When I am here, no one will dare to hurt you. If they ever do, they will have to suffer my wrath."
Seeing your lover was emitting dark aura, you immediately hugged his waist and reassured that was in the past. Many thoughts ran through this fae as he wanted to ease your burden. When he offered that he might find a way to make your eyes normal, you rejected it.
He didn't have to go through so much length just to change your eyes. As much as it was hell for you but thanks to these eyes, you met many friends here in Twisted Wonderland.
Malleus merely shook his head. HIs s/o was too kind for their own good. As much as he didn’t agree with your decision, he’ll definitely be more protective for the next few days than you thought.
"Others may find you a thorn to my side, but to me you are my human, my heart, my soul and my weakness. My other half."

*SPOILERS*
((Just some of my thoughts on possible events that could happen with Judy and V living with the nomads.))
(Edited because I’m a perfectionist. 💀)
-------
Greetings, reader. It's been about two weeks since Judy and V left Night City with the Aldecaldos, and things couldn't be better ...except for one tiny thing.
Judy: *Lights a smoke, only to inhale it once before flicking it away as she approaches Panam.*
Panam: *Is to occupied with her vehicle to even notice Judy approaching, forehead drenched in sweat.*
Judy: Ahem. *Clears her throat and crosses her arms.* Panam. Dude. We need to talk.
Panam: Okay? *Blinks, rolling out from under her vehicle.* What can I help you with...”dude”? *Forces a smile, wiping away the grease on her pants.*
Judy: Okay...Well I just-
Panam: Is V alright??? Did she have a seizure? ?? Is she bleeding again??? *Stands up, concern growing in her eyes.* Fucking hell V. Can she go two seconds without bleeding???
Judy: No! *Flails her arms.* Fuck, no. *Shakes her head.* Nothing like that. V is doing fine, same as usual, I actually wanted to have a convo...about you. *Hugs herself, looking away into the sun.*
Panam: *Drops her wrench, looking pissed.* What?
Judy: It's been eating at me—you and V.
Panam: Me and V? *Picks back up her wrench with a laugh.* Bitch, you are crazy.
Judy: Don’t give me that shit Panam, you know exactly what I'm referring to. *Huffs, growing impatient.* You and V. What's that about?
Panam: *Rolls her eyes, returning Judy’s suspicious gaze.* Is there a problem?
Judy: Yeah. *Scrunches her nose.* There might be.
Panam: *Points her wrench at Judy.* Do I need to remind you who’s clan you’re traveling with?
Judy: No. *Sighs, pinching her nose.* Shit. Look, I’m grateful as fuck for what you guys have done for V...and me...b-but...*Shakes her head, kicking at the dirt while trying to find words.* Look. I trust V. She's very...special to me, and I don't want to have any problems with you, holmes. *Shrugs.* I just want everyone to be on the same page.
Panam: *Nods, arms crossed.* Uh-huh. And what page is that?
Judy: That V is my girl and I don’t take kindly to sharing. Simple as that. *Shrugs.* I know what V’s intentions are, but I don't know shit about yours...we just haven't known each other long. *Sighs, rubbing her head.* And as much as I hate acting jealous, I left those games behind in Night City. So if you’re into V, just say it; no point in lying.
Panam: Your girl? Games? Ha! Fuck this. *Waves Judy off and turns back around to the vehicle.* Look, Judy, I feel like if I don't answer your question, you won't leave, and one of us will end up with a black eye. *Takes a deep breath.* SO. For V’s sake and your conscience, the short answer is yes. *Shrugs, back turned to Judy.* V and I are more than “just friends.” I thought that was obvious. Happy?
Judy: Okay. Thanks...for your honesty, I guess. *Closes her eyes with a sigh.* I thought hearing the truth would make me feel better, but...*Just shakes her head and pulls out a cigarette.* And? Your plans are?
Panam: Pfft! What plans? *Picks the scab on her arm.* Other than finding a cure? Nothing. *Chuckles, popping open the hood.* V is my clan sister. She's a dumb fuck, but she's family and I love her, nothing beyond that. *Shrugs* That's it.
Judy: *Blinks, putting away her smoke.* That’s it?
Panam: *Nods, half paying attention.* Yep!
Judy: *Furrows her brows.* What was all that flirting about then? I thought-
Panam: JUDY!! FUCK!! *Throws her wrench on the ground and grabs Judy by the shoulders.* I DON’T WANT TO FUCK YOUR GIRLFRIEND!!! OK?? I like dick. DICK. *Is screaming at the top of her lungs. Yes, all the clan can hear.* OKAY?? Okay. *Pats her on the back.* Good talk “dude”. *She let's go of Judy and picks back up the wrench.*
Judy: O-oh. Oh! *Laughs away the tension.* Fuck. *Shakes her head, flushed and embarrassed.* Ugh, I'm sorry, Panam, that was a gonk move of me...I...well...sorry...it’s just...
Panam: *Smirks, looking over her shoulder.* Trust issues? And if you apologize one more fucking time, I will punch you in the throat. *Says that with a smile and returns back to her work.*
Judy: *Shakes her head, now smiling.* No...not anymore. V is just the first person I've been able to trust and rely on...*Stops, thinking of Evelyn*...in a long time.
Panam: Damn, that city really did a number on you, didn’t it? V’s told me a little, but not all.
Judy: *Sighs, and nods.* Yeah. Maybe I will tell you the full story sometime. I’m still...processing it.
Panam: That’s alright. Your past is your business. *Hands Judy a beer.* Before V, I thought I could only rely on myself, and then she reminded me of the value of family and what a rare thing that is to find and keep...*Gestures around* And well, I wanted her to become apart of that.
Judy: *Sighs, looking around.* Yeah...
Panam: *Bumps Judy with her hip.* Hey, I guess that means you’re apart of the family too. Even if it's temporary.
Judy: *Smiles, looking at the beer.* Thanks...I just feel like such an ass now. *Kicks at the dirt, mad at herself.* Ugh. Shit. Fuck. *Shakes her head, frowning.* I'm sorry for assuming.
Panam: Meh. *Waves a hand* Already forgotten. You aren't the first to assume, and you probably won't be the last.
Judy: You know what? You’re a good person Panam, kind of an ass, but the type of person you will never find in Night City.
Panam: Ha! Fuck you, basement dweller, I will drink to that. *Takes a swig of her beer.*
Judy: *Sighs, watching the sun set.* I think it's time I add a new tattoo...
V: Heyyyy! *Waves from afar, back from a mission.* Drinking without me? The AUDACITY.
Panam: Well hello to you too, fellow alcoholic. *Raises her empty bottle in greetings.*
V: *Flips Panam off with a smirk as she approaches Judy.*
Judy: V. *Smiles so hard it hurts.* Glad to have you back...and you can have my beer. *Holds it up.* I’m not really in the mood.
Panam: *Grabs Judy by the shoulder, roaring with laughter.* YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT JUDY JUST ASKED ME!!!
Judy: *Gasps, dropping the beer.*
V: Oh, this I HAVE to hear. *Grabs a beer from the cooler.* Spill.
Panam: J-JUDY THOUGHT....*Is laughing so hard, she's crying* SHE T-THOUGHT- *Can barely stand, Judy is the only thing keeping her up.*
Judy: SHUSH, YOU GONK!!! *Groans, pushing Panam away.*
Panam: *Glaldy falls, laughing and gasping for air.*
V: Judy...*Looks at her with THOSE eyes*
Judy: Uhh....*Sweats.* Nothing! I...erm...It was nothing! *Clears her throat.* I have something over...*Looks desperately for an escape*...THERE..hnng...*stomps away, covering her face* so embarrassing...Carol! Help.

<<acquiring...acquiring...acquiring:>>:incoming transmission: origin MKU-77::<<Transmission begins>>
Hey there, handsome,
You been awfully quiet lately. I sincerely hope you haven't ended up on the wrong end of some kip's thrower. Now, in your last transmission you mentioned the possibility of coming to visit me on This Stupid Moon. (This place has no registered name, so for now it is This Stupid Moon, and, since I'm the only one here, I guess I am the queen of This Stupid Moon.) I would very much welcome a visit. I haven't seen another soul in the flesh since I got stranded here...::dead air for a beat::..I can't, in good conscience send you the landing vectors without full disclosure. You're not a superstitious fellow, are you?....:::open line crackles:::...the lights just came on. I can see the colony. The floods go on every night. They're on a timer. They turn on. They turn off. There's nobody here, Ezra. We found the colony abandoned, and then...
<<LOS...LOS...LOS>>
[TRANSMISSION RECEIVED VIA EH75] >>RESPONSIVE TRANSMISSION IN PROGRESS<<
Hello there, my stranded companion:
I do apologize for my delay in response. I was on the move then had a bit of a health issue I had to combat, I’m happy to report that I am mending well on all accounts though. A plan to visit is still in the works, should that be in the cards still. It still surprises me that not a single person inhabits that moon. I so rarely encounter that phenomenon. ::Ezra listens with a quirked brow as the line fills with dead air, his brow furrowing when she mentions superstitions:: My dear, I was born and raised in Louisiana. I am a low swamp dweller, superstitions are in my blood. Is there.. ::Ezra leans in closely to the signal as it seems she’s traveling:: what colony, birdie? I don’t recall you mentioning finding one before. ::Ezra’s brow knots in confusion as he listens close, worrying pricking at his senses:: I say it best you avoid this colony, avoid whatever ruins it may be that you’ve found. ::when the feed goes dead, he tries to restart it, furrowing his brow when it ends the same again:: J, sweetheart, if this reaches you give me response. For a moon deemed uninhabited, it worries me that a colony be there - even if it is abandoned. Call it an old prospector worry and the superstitions of my youth calling to my blood, but I would suggest leaving the moon. Leave the colony at least. Do not interact with any beings, whether they seem flesh and blood or not. Call back to me when you can.

Hello!! Id like to request Murphy's grounder boyfriend become real pls?? Take your time and sleep too because it's 3:38am but I'd love to see how you bring the idea to life with ur big smart brain!!!
Okay, so I'm gonna probably have to expand on this idk if this is how I want it to actually happen since I have two ideas. But I'm gonna run with this one.
This doesn't really go into his appearance much but oh well. This is the night they met.
Warning: Mentions of Torture and Hanging.
Italics are actually being spoken in Trig.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tolkien had been working on training some of the younger kids when Murphy got dragged into his camp. He watched as the young man thrashed in the arms of his kin and he didn't know why but he wanted to help.
Tolkien is bitter. A man In his early 20's who has been in more wars with his fellow Earth dwellers than he can count. He kills people without blinking an eye most of the time. He doesn't care who he has to kill to do what he believes is right, though he tries not to kill his own kin.
Many times its happened before. If The Heda comes and some idiot doesn't follow the rules. He's the one to stick a sword him his back and watch them die. And he's happy to do it too, to watch the blood drain out of them. He has since he was a young boy and he was forced to kill his parents.
So hes surprised when a pang of empathy comes from the boy yelling, begging, to be let go. He walks towards the old shed opening it to see Murphy being chained to the wall. He watches in curiosity as He spits at a few of his people, and he smiles softly when he gets slapped but does it again anyways.
He has fighting spirit, Tolkien likes that. After his people leave the room Murphy glares up at him.
"What is your name?" Tolkien asks looking down at the young man. The man shakes his head and scoffs.
"I don't speak your language! I don't fucking speak it and I'm tired of being yelled and talked to in it!" He yells tensing his arms and glaring. Tolkien kneels in front of him.
"What is your name?" Tolkien asks waiting for The Man to give a reply. Murphy scoffs.
"Why should I tell you? You people kidnap me and chain me up and you think you can just know my name?" He growls pushing himself back into the wall as much as possible.
"Just answer my question before my people come back and you're too busy screaming to answer my simple, Mundane questions." Tolkien says leaning in a bit closer.
"Murphy. John Murphy." He says hesitantly looking up at the larger man. Tolkien smiles softly and takes a deep breath.
"Johnathan it is." He says and he smirks softly when Murphy sighs.
"Please dont call me that." Murphy says shaking his head.
"I don't think you have much of a choice." Tolkien teases grabbing the chain and pulling slightly, just enough for it to move. Murphy scoffs and shakes his head.
"Alright, you know my name. What's yours?" Murphy asks looking up at Tolkien, still hesitant about the whole situation.
"Tolkien." He says and Murphy smiles slightly.
"That sounds familiar." He says shaking his head looking at the chains around his wrists. Tolkien knows he's evaluating if he can escape or not.
"What do you mean, Jonathan?" Tolkien asks trying to hide the smirk on his face from Calling him that name. Murphy looks at him and sighs probably realizing he can't get out.
"He was a famous writer who wrote a long ass fantasy series a lot of people likes. He made a brand new world in those books. My d-" Murphy cuts himself off and clears his throat, "My dad used to read them to me."
"Why doesn't he anymore?" Tolkien asks, though he'd pretty sure he knows why. Murphy relaxes against the wall.
"They killed him." Murphy sneers.
"Who?" Tolkien asks softly with a look of curiosity in his dark yes. Murphy didnt notice until now but Tolkien's eyes seem to be the darkest shade of brown he's ever seen. They're pretty mesmerizing if he's honest with himself.
"My people... They... It's weird up there. They'll kill people for the prettiest of crimes. Including stealing to rake care of someone." Murphy says looking at him. Tolkien examines him and sees hes already injured quite a bit. He looks too his neck and sees purple bruises and a thin cut around it. He reaches out and Murphy flinches back.
"Don't touch me." Murphy growls and Tolkien sighs.
"I don't think you have much of a choice." Tolkien says and when he sees the smaller man go pale and gulp he rethinks what he said.
"I'm not going to do anything to you." Tolkien says slowly pulling the collar of his shirt down to look at the wounds on his neck. Murphy shiver slightly and Tolkien put his other hand on his chest, grounding him.
"What happened? Did my people do this to you?" He asks, still examining the wounds. Murphy shakes his head no.
"I got hung. By my people." Murphy says staring off into the abyss. Tolkien leans back slightly looking into Murphy's eyes.
"Why?" He asks examining him.
"They thought I killed a guy. Turns out it was a little girl who did it." Murphy says with venom in his voice. Tolkien puts the collar of his shirt back and gets up walking towards a different side of the shed grabbing a cup and filling it with water. He walks back to the chained boy and lifts it so Murphy can look at it.
"Water?" Tolkien asks gesturing it towards him. Murphy scowls.
"I don't trust you." He sneers glaring at the water. Tolkien shakes his head and moves closer.
"What do you have to lose?" Tolkien asks holding it closer. Murphy nods softly and Tolkien brings the cup to his lips tilting it slowly.
"What are they going to do to me?" Murphy asks when he's done drinking. Tolkien puts the cup down and looks at him.
"They're going to torture you for information. They want to know everything about the people that fell from the sky." Tolkien says not sugarcoating the truth. Murphy appreciates that, and nods.
"All they want is to live here. They just want to live. I wont tell them anything." Murphy says looking up at him in determination.
"Why not, Johnathan? They beat you, hung you, and banished you for a crime you didn't commit. Why would you want to protect them?" Tolkien asks looking down at him.
"They're my people." Murphy says softly and they hear footsteps and laughter outside getting closer. Tolkien sighs and leans in to whisper in Murphy's ear.
"You're Strong, Johnathan, I can tell. You'll be okay." Tolkien then stands up as a few of his people walk in. They have knives in teir hands and whips on their backs. He steps out of the shed and starts walking.
When he's a few steps from the shed Murphy starts to Scream.
if you’re open to plotting something new, what are some ideas you might want to explore with someone??
Tumblr media
i am always open to plotting!! let me see what i can find, i’ll organise it by character,,,no dancestors for now but if u wanted to plot with one of them, feel free to send another ask!!
i dont really have any DETAILED plot ideas, these are more just starting points..sadly none of my ocs rly have future arcs planned out so these are all pretty casual...and these are not an exhaustive list! im open to any and all plot ideas so pls dont be afraid to ask!!
Tumblr media
for faldur,,
he’s always open for ex matesprits or ex kismesis, as well as casual pitch flings. theres pretty much no guidelines for these ones, if it’s someone who’d be interested in him, and they’re jade or above, it’s fair game!
an ex mate might be someone who found him too intense and broke up with him, someone who indulged his narcissism and boosted his ego til his other quads were forced to intervene, or something else entirely, as long as there was a reason they had to break up (i currently dont want him to have a red quad 4 Reasons)
kismesis flings…hes open to anything. he hangs around bars often and will flirt with Anyone he finds attractive, so if someones open to that kinda thing its good to go. this could also lead to general friendships! he has no friends currently. boo
on the topic of friends, book friends! a little known fact is he spends a lot of time on book forums, and someone to geek out over books with would be a nice change of pace.
bitchy highblood friends. just like a bitchy seadweller squad would be fun, tbh.
enemies! got a seadweller who would find him obnoxious? hell yeah! enemies is pretty open ended, i’d be willing to have faldur fucked up to teach him a lesson (within reason, he IS a seadweller and he is strong. he does fight a lot) alternatively, u got a lowblood (or highblood tbh) who needs a reason to be afraid of seadwellers? faldur attacks ppl who so much as look at him funny, so thats a valid option too
MAFIA TIES…faldur works as an assassin for when people need something really fucked up done to someone. do with that what u will
OH I JUST REMEMBERED fleet recruiters/anyone from the fleet/similar organisation who sees potential in him. faldurs constantly torn between redemption and leaving it all behind to join the fleet, so that could be interesting!
theres definitely more but…tbh im welcome to anyone approaching me with ANY plot ideas they have!
will do the rest under the cut bc that got LONG
Tumblr media
I WROTE THIS ALL OUT AND FORGOT HARREL
BIG ONE IS just other mafia trolls!!
mafia bosses/hitmen who would hire him. who are doing jobs on the downlow, and need a cleanup guy! harrel is very good at his job so he’s highly regarded within the business
especially mean mafia ppl. be mean to him. its part of his character hes anxious bc the mafia is mean
no specifics, but i want harrel to just get Fucked Up. like i said, he’s highly regarded so holding him for ransom isn’t out of the question. just fuck this nerd up
on a lighter note! he frequents record shops and jazz clubs, so maybe a musician or two with similar interests to help him get out of his shell. he needs a friend or two.
friends from university! anyone in sciences, forensics, medical science, criminal studies…he probably studied with them! his backstory is that he disappeared from university one day when he got kidnapped by a mafia boss, and managed to wrangle his way into them keeping him alive. an old friend who noticed and is suddenly Very Confused upon seeing him again like 5 years later
someone he went to uni with who’s now in the law industry, and the conflict that might arise from them being on two totally different ends of the spectrum…could be a fun dynamic!
on the same wavelength: old flames from university. ex quadrants, ex hookups, ex crushes. people he was romantically involved with before suddenly disappearing
i think thats all…
Tumblr media
forrr sarky!
no real quad stuff needed for him…perhaps an ex or two, but no real ideas there!
other grubtubers to be friends with, or fans who’ve met/would want to meet him! grubtube is a HUGE part of his life and i’ve never really been able to explore it, bc he has no connections involved with it. u got a grubtuber troll who’d collab with him? a troll who enjoys letsplays? a weird youtuber superfan who’d give their right arm to meet a letsplayer? fuck yea dude all valid options
PETTY INTERNET DRAMA. im sure theres potential
sarky IS a shifter, meaning he turns into a weird dragon monster in the dead of night on a full…moons (idk how that works on alternia,,,hello???) u got a troll who’d stop him when they catch him stumbling shirtless thru the city streets post-shift towards a local diner at 4am weirdly covered in scars and looing like he’s about to pass out?? a poor overworked diner worker wondering what the Fuck this dudes deal is when he stumbles in at 5am before cramming his face full of meat?? a troll who hangs out in the wilderness bordering the city and saw the horrific sight of this fuzzy teal bitch shifting into a giant dragon?? or just a fellow shifter perhaps?? idk theres a lot that can be done here, im sure
apartment neighbours! disgruntled highblood a floor below him wondering why this bitch keeps scaling the building?? or someone who thinks its pretty sick, actually.
fellow city dwellers for him to meet and befriend or annoy the shit out of…he takes the subway a lot, so they can meet there. or in some greasy food place
connected to faldur, any ex quads of faldurs that had to be intervened with and broken up, sarky was probably involved. if u want them to be bitter towards him, feel free. it makes for more interest >:3c
Tumblr media
florem time…………..
GET FLOREM A GIRLFRIEND 2K20…PLEASE. i just want her to have a girlfriend. its what she deserves and we all know it
get her FRIENDS TOO....friends who will support her, and her weird hobbies. florem has a tendency to help other people and forget about her own needs, so itd be nice for her to have a friend who listens to her too...
perhaps a troll who stumbles upon her weird troll-eating plant. a fellow enthusiast or some poor soul she has to rescue, either or
a fellow taxidermy enthusiast....maybe a pen pal who buys stuff from whatever the troll equivalent of etsy is
camping buddy...............she has no one to go camping with!!
im sadly low on ideas for florem but i DO want interactions with her...
Tumblr media
veleno tiem babey
she needs a gf in every single goddamn quad.....shes 100% single
a Bunch of highbloods who were cocky enough to gamble against her, and are incredibly mad about losing. highbloods out for vengeance
on the same wavelength, a highblood who lost and got incredibly mad and fucked her face up, giving her all them scars....vel would avoid them for the rest of her life, but perhaps its someone who frequents the same casinos as she does so she cant avoid em 4 Extra Drama
other down on their luck lowbloods, maybe younger ones, who need her help bc shes Experienced. she can become their Street Mom
other down on their luck lowbloods for her to just befriend!! she frequents a shitty diner, as well as singing in a jazz club and hanging around in casinos. if youve got a lowblood who hangs around in those places they could def meet!
i THINK thats all i got...but know i am more than open to literally Any plot suggestion ever >:3c
Hello! I love your writing and all your stories! Going to make a weird request.. A merman Noctis x reader fic? Like Insomnia was an underwater kingdom and Noctis fell in love with human s/o. How did they meet? How would the love develop? Is there an evil that threatens the couple? How would the kingdom react to meeting Noctis love? Would s/o want to stay on land or want to go to Insomnia with the merman prince? An epilogue after everything? (I know it's a lot you don't have to do all of it lol)
Ohhh! The ever popular Mermaid AU! I’m honored! With this request, I have officially entered the ranks of a true fandom author! Lol 😘 And this is officially my 100th post on this blog!! WOOT! 🎉
I’ve actually been super excited to get to this request! It got a bit out of hand, so it’s taken a while to write. Super inspired by Disney, like it was a 5 hour Disney karaoke party while writing this.  I hope you enjoy!
Sleepless Waters
Tumblr media
Waves crashed on the rocky shore, the clouds darkened, and the winds whipped, but it was all far away from the young prince, safe below the surface of the sea. He slept peacefully in the arms of his father, King Regis of the Lucian Sea.
Far above, your young self watched the storm out a farm house’s window. Three other families had come to stay with you through the storm, fearing their homes would be washed away. The presence of others by your side during nature’s fury brought peace to your young heart, but you ached for the adventure of the storm.
The merpeople of the the Lucian Sea were something of a myth to the people of Eos. There were ancient tales of them coming to the aid of the land dwellers during great wars with the daemons, bringing with them water magic and the aid of monsters from the deep. They granted the coastal towns prosperous fishing when the smoke of conflict cleared and crops had been razed. The Lucian people brought the entire world back from the brink of death, only to suddenly vanish below the waves, never to be heard from again.
Occasionally, sailors would return to alehouses claiming to have seen the merpeople or been rescued by one. These rumors would be chocked up to saltwater filled delusions.
To the merpeople, humans were an honorless folk, quick to violence and disregarding the wellbeing of their own people. Their ancient murals told of a war for Eos the where man and mer fought as allies. As the battle settled, the mer tried to help rebuild by providing man with the secrets of the ocean. The kingdoms of man hoarded them. Coastal countries kept the food and resources for themselves, using their newfound strength to conquer the inland countries they had starved.
The people of the sea were as one country, always valuing their fellow soul. Upon seeing the power struggle of the land, the mer were disgusted any being could do that to one of their own. The ancient kings vowed to leave the sunlit kingdoms to their own demise, distancing their people to save them from such a fate. From then on, an oath was taken by every mer not to interact with man upon penalty of death.
For two millennia the kingdom of water has watched man silently from beyond the rocky coast.
Now a young man, Prince Noctis hated this silence. He like to watch the humans as they played on the beach, keeping his eyes just above water. The children would build structures together to watch them be swept away in the tide. He saw them chase each other and protect one another. Their games were fascinating to him.
For now, he watched another young person as they practiced sword techniques on the beach. He cringed at their form, but their endurance was admirable.
As they practiced, a young crocodile took interest. Tail leaving trenches in the sand, it snuck towards Noctis’s ward. He began to panic: with the wind in their ears, the would-be-knight couldn’t hear the monster coming towards them.
Closer it crept.
Closer still.
“BEHIND YOU!” Noctis yelled, popping out of the water. He was just in time. You turned around to see the crocodile before it attacked. Being able to take the offensive, you easily dispatched the small monster.
Blushing profusely, Noctis dipped below the water. What had he just done? He had just spoken to a human! What was going to happen?
He heard muffled yelling above the water.
“Hello?!” You cried from the beach. Someone had just saved your life…didn’t they? You could have sworn someone had shouted a warning to you about the crocodile.  But there was no one on the beach…
“WHAT IS IT CHILD?!?” An elder called down from the cliff above.
“Nothing,” you called back.
“Good! Then get up here and get back to work!”
You sighed. Farm work wasn’t for you. It was too monotonous. Only the seasons changed and even they brought predictable work. Your childhood friends were content with working their parents’ fields, but you were not. The land held promise, but you were not one to be rooted in place.
You took one last look out at the sea before heading towards the path leading away from the beach. Noctis watched you go.
Each day you returned to practice on the beach and each day Noctis returned to watch you. Neither absence went unnoticed. Elders became increasingly disgruntled with you abandoning your work. Noctis’s guards and friends began to look for him.
The prince was noting your improved swing, helped by a book next to you, when he was pulled below the waves by a sharp yank! Momentarily disheveled by the oncoming water, he tried to lash out at his attacker. His swings were blocked by strong arms.
“Crown Prince, what in the seven seas are you doing?” Ignis, his advisor and lifelong friend waited below the waves, having pulled the Prince down.
“Specs!” Noctis came to, rubbing his head. Ignis’s tail swished in annoyance waiting for Noctis’s answer. “Er, nothing. Just…watching the sky.”
“Doubtful.” Ignis replied, adjusting his spectacles. “Let us be off.”
Noct began to follow Ignis’s dive, but hesitated, looking over his shoulder to the surface. The act was noted with pity by Ignis. The future king escaped punishment by King Regis thanks to the kindness of his friend.
Noctis returned to the surface that night. He didn’t see what the past kings seemed to see in the humans. They had been kind to each other, only using violence to protect each other. They couldn’t be such awful creatures!
He pulled himself onto a stone, sitting up so as to watch the full moon. He didn’t hear you making your way down the path.
You had come down to the beach to watch the sky, far away from the revelry of the villagers. Today marked a harvest festival. The same villagers would be eating the same food they did every year and dancing with the same people. You had no interest in the festivities.
You saw a figure sitting on a rock just beyond the tide. Was it a daemon? Was it a stranger?
“Hello?” you called out. You saw the figure flinch and fall into the water. Fearing they could be hurt and drown, you waded out to the stone.
It was like no one had been there. You heard a splashing behind you. “Hello?” you asked the empty night, again. More splashing, this time it was violent. It was coming from one of the nearby traps the fishermen had put out!
You ran through the darkness to the sound. Rounding a boulder, bathed in moonlight, you found the strangest sight of your life. Tangled in the fishing nets, you saw a merman! A handsome, dark haired man with blue scales and dark eyes. The two of you stared at each other.
Was this an actual merman? What was he doing here? Your head was spinning with questions.
The man gritted his teeth and cuffed as you approached him. You pulled a knife from your boots and he raised his hands. “I’m not going to hurt you, I’m going to free you…” You said, raising your hands to him. Did merfolk even know your language?
He sat still, but wouldn’t look at you as you freed him. As you cut the last rope holding him, his entire body lunged into the water. There was barely a shimmer as he darted away.
You sat, stunned, trying to think through what just happened. No one would ever believe you. You must be at home, asleep in your bed.
Noctis was far off the coast before he stopped to turn around. He peered out over the surface of the water, expecting to see an empty coast. Some part of him told him that you’d be gone, having run away to tell your human friends about the merman you saw! Brag about your good deed in freeing it! Sure you’d get a boon from the sea.
Instead, he saw you sitting there, bathed in moonlight, watching the water. Why weren’t you gone? What was it? He slowly made his way back to the shore, wanting to check on his savior.
“Come back…” you whispered to the sea, not wanting to lose the first wonder your simple eyes ever beheld.
Noctis heard you and the sadness in your voice. He couldn’t leave, not after you had just freed him.
He was willing to take a risk, but only for you.
The young merman surfaced, rising from the water like the sun before you eyes. You gasped. The two of you simply stared at each other in the moonlight. Moments later, he dove, swimming off, again.
The next night you returned, having had to spend the day working. The elders weren’t letting you out of their sights, now.
The tide was high as you removed your shoes, unceremoniously splashing into the water. Looking about, you hoped to see the merman, again, but he was nowhere to be seen. You sat on a tall rock as the water splashed below. You mind trailed off to distant daydreams as you stared out.
A spash woke you from your thoughts. You looked about to see what it had been, hopes and fears clouding your mind. Your gaze brushed over what you had initially thought was a rock, before coming back, to realize it was black hair! He had returned!
Noctis had returned to the surface that day, to find an empty beach. Sorrow filled his heart, wondering where his savior had gone. He had snuck out that night, with greater difficulty, dodging his shield gaze the whole while.
Here you were, the stars twinkling above your head. Before him like an image of peace.
“I’m not going to hurt you…” is all you could think to say to the merman before you, as though he was a small animal.
His head popped below the water, again, taking your heart with him.
You stared at the spot he had left.
“Er…hello…” you heard from softly at your feet. Startled, you fell from your perch into the water! Hands quickly grabbed you, hoisting you back to the surface.
Your lungs gasped for the air they had forgotten upon their descent. As you oriented yourself, letting the seawater leave your eyes, a soft giggle met you. You were looking into the eyes of the merman!
“Wha!” You began.
“Careful!” he exclaimed, holding you so you wouldn’t bash your head against a rock.
You calmed yourself, still in his arms. “You’re…real?” You exclaimed, putting a hand on his face. You poked at him and stretched parts of his face, to Noctis’s great annoyance.
He smiled at you. “As much as you are!” he proclaimed.
Noctis swam you back to shore, letting you sit on the sand and he in the tidal waters.
“I have so many questions!” You exclaimed, not wanting this dream to escape you.
“Well, me too!” He sounded slightly off put, as if forgetting he was the only myth on the beach.
“Are you really a merman? Why are you here? Who are you? Where have you been?” The questions overflowed from your lips.
He looked at you, stunned. The two of you had yet another stare off.
You cleared your throat. “My apologies…I’m [Y/N].” You held out your hand to the merman.
He smiled at you. Ancient texts had warned the prince of the strange ways of humans. “I’m Noctis.” He returned, taking your hand and kissing it. His lips were cool and soft on your skin, making the burn in your cheeks all the more noticable.
The two of you sat and talked the night away, learning new things about the long silent cultures.
Your rendezvous continued the next night.
Noctis was waiting for you one a stone, as you approached. He wore an utterly gorgeous smile upon his handsome face.
Wading out to him, you remarked, “You’re back! I keep fearing I will wake up from this dream.”
“If you’re dreaming, then so am I.” He commented. “My turn for questions.”
You settled in, your eyes beckoning him to begin.
“What is this place? What do you do? Why are you training to become a warrior?” Now it’s his turn to spill over.
You smile; it was refreshing to know that you’re not the only one in the dark. “Well, this place is a small village called Ogvar. I was raised a farmer by my family. I train each day because…because I don’t want to be a farmer.” Your eyes reflected the determination in your heart, looking up to challenge the very moon.
“But isn’t being a farmer noble? You provide food for others.” Noctis’s lifelong teachings from his father took over. To the merpeople, every profession is honorable, especially if it helps their fellow folk.
“Yes, it is. But it’s not for me. I couldn’t make even a marigold grow! And I can’t stand how boring it all is.” You sighed, still staring out at the water. “Maybe I’m not meant to be a hero, but I want to find and adventure, someplace that I feel like I belong, you know?”
Noctis grew solemn and nodded. If anyone knew how you felt, it was him. “Well, then. You’re going to be needing this.” Noctis hands you a sword that you hadn’t even noticed he had!
“For me… really?” You asked, taken aback.
“Yes, as a thank you for saving me.” He pushed the blade closer to you.
You took it from his hands, marveling at how light it was. It’s was made from some sort of scales, serrated at the base and sharp at the tip. “Thank you!” You exclaimed, beaming. Seeing you so happy filled the Prince’s heart with joy; he couldn’t take his eyes from you. Perhaps, humans weren’t so evil after all.
The whole while, Ignis watched from a distance.
The next day, Noctis was in his room, preparing a new sword. Ignis knocked, requesting entry.
“Of course!” Noctis called, letting in his dear friend.
“What happened to your blade?” The astute advisor inquired.
“Oh…nothing. Lost it in the canyon.” Noctis replied, avoiding Ignis’s gaze.
“Noct…I know.” Ignis managed. He wasn’t sure how to bring this up, but something must be said before everyone found out.
“About what?!” Noct spun around, panicked.
“About your nightly escapades. Please, Noct, remember our oaths.” Ignis could barely look at Noctis. He knew what the prince was doing was done with a good heart. The human he met may not even be that bad. But if the King found out…well, Ignis worried about Noct’s safety.
Pleading eyes met Noctis’s. His heart was made up, though. “But they’re not bad! They’re nothing like the legends! Ignis, they’re wonderful! They saved me!” He tried to say everything, anything, to make Ignis see his way, but the advisor just shook his head.
“Remember your oath,” is all he reminded Noctis as he swam away.
That night, Noctis would return to your rendezvous point with Ignis’s words echoing through his mind.
The moon is high in the sky. You’re waiting on Noctis, having gotten to the beach early on light feet and a fluttering heart. Seeing the merman has brought a whole new light to your life.
He approaches with a far away gaze.
“What’s on your mind?” You ask as he’s unnaturally quiet.
He stares off, pensive, before sighing. “Do you know why humans haven’t seen merpeople in thousands of years?”
“No…no one does.” You reply.
“It’s because one king found humans to be untrustworthy, violent, and honorless. So every mer after swore an oath to never speak to a human…” He looks you in the eyes. “Upon our lives.”
A cold shock runs through you. That’s why his people vanished into legend? They found humans to be that reprehensible? Did Noctis find you to be that way?
You sit, stunned by his words, having none of your own with which to reply. Noctis decides to fill the silence.
“It’s not right! They judged an entire culture on the deeds of your leaders. Then, you were never given a chance to change!” His hands wave towards the sky, daring to defy the old order.
You stare at your new friend, thinking of what a great leader he would make.
For a time, you sit in silence, listening to the waves crashing.
In a whisper, barely audible above the wind, Noctis asks, “Want to change all that?” He wears a mischievous smile.
This man is full of surprises. “Aren’t we already?” you ask, fearing the mounting consequences against your friend.
“We can do better.” Noctis replies, pushing himself from your perch and sliding soundlessly into the water. He holds up his hands, offering to catch you if you would only come to him.
“What are you doing?” Your voice trembles.
“Do you trust me?” His voice is confident. He saved your life and quickly become the sole light in it. But what was this about?
You had always wanted an adventure, and here it was, staring back at you. This is it.
“Yes!” You say, throwing yourself from the rock.
Water fills your vision, ears, and nose, but you didn’t have to wait long for air. Noctis caught you. He is there, that familiar and handsome face being at you.
Holding you just at the surface, you realize you don’t know enough about this plan. “Er…how is this going to work? I can’t dive very far.”
“Magic,” Noctis retorts, giggling at his own curtness.
“What?!”
“Do you mind if I kiss you?” Now he is asking questions? Why? But your heart takes control of your mouth.
“Please do!” What did you just say?! “But how does that…”
The merman puts a finger to your lips to silence you.
The water swirls around him as the two of you sink beneath the waves. You close your eyes and hold your breath. Opening just one eye, you see Noctis blushing. At least mermen blush, you think. The aquatic beauty lays his hands on your cheeks, before suddenly pulling you close. Your lips embrace in a hurried but gentle kiss.
Your heart feels like it physically left your chest. The cold ocean seems to disappear from your skin. Your mind melts into feelings of pure joy.
His lips linger on yours before working them apart. His breath becomes your breath. Your lungs fill as though taking in air for the first time in a century. You skin tingles with the magic of the moment.
Just as suddenly as it happened, it ends. Noctis pulls away from you. You open your dazed eyes.
You are underwater! Your body panics, instincts tell you you should be drowning!
“NO! No, no, just…breathe! It’s ok!” Noctis grabs your hands, trying to calm you.
Your terrified eyes star at him. Your mind battles your body, one trying to will you to breathe, trusting Noctis, the other collapsing in on itself, knowing the dangers of deep water.
Your mind wins for a brief moment. Your mouth opens, gasping for air. Your heart hammers, knowing your lungs will be filled with water.
But the water never comes. You are able to take another gasp, and another, until they start to feel more like breaths.
“See?” Nocits asks, dipping just below you.
“I guess…” you hands fly to your mouth, you spoke! “What’s going on?!” you can’t hardly believe it all.
“Magic.” Noctis replies, a smug grin plastered on his face. “Merpeople can grant the gift of breath, as we call it.”
You hardly hear him, taking in the feeling of the ocean. Your skin is warm, as through it doesn’t need the sun, anymore. Everything around you is a deep dark blue, serene and ominous. This has to be a dream.
Noctis can’t help but take in your wonder. “You think this is good, wait till you see it all!” He says, taking your hand. “Are you ready?”
Heart pounding, mind fuzzy, you look at the merman holding your hand. This has to be a dream, but if it is one, you’d best make the most of it. All you can do is nod.
With sudden strength, Noctis flips his fins and you dive down to the brightly colored sea floor.
You legs can’t keep up with the experienced fins of the merman, so you let him pull you wherever the flow of his whims desires.
You see coral of reds, blues, and purples! Fish the colors of every wildflower! Shipwrecks as old as the village. Noctis continues to pull you along.
He takes you through mountains taller than any you had seen on land as they begin erupting in steaming surges! Down through canyons where your stomach leaves you upon descent. Deeper and deeper you dive.
Suddenly you stop, hearing a great moan echo through the water.
“What was that?” You ask, fearing the unknown. Noctis has a look of joy in his eyes!
“You’re going to get to see her!”
“See who?” The cry comes again.
“Bismark!” Noctis sings, pulling you to a nearby ledge.
Up from the dark depths a great creature, like none you had ever imagined, rises.  It resembles a whale, but is a hundred times bigger, with a great horn jutting from its head. Runes cover its body. The creature is massive but more majestic than anything you have seen on land.
The god of the sea puts on a performance for you, swimming in great flips and circles. Shooting for the surface, breaching, and letting the echo of her descent fill the ocean like thunder. She takes your breath away.
She lets out another cry, this one more joyous than the last. Fish from every direction come to her call, joining in her dance. Their scales shimmer like the stars above.
For her final act, Bismark swims close to your lookout, stopping just long enough for one great eye to meet yours, before gliding off into the great unknown. You and Noctis get caught in her currents, being picked up and flipped about, giggling as you settle.
Noctis rights himself first, coming to your aid as you spin. You continue to giggle in his arms.
He looks at you as though you are the greatest wonder in all the seas. You look up at him, trying to convey how much this all means to you. You wrap your arms around his neck and he understands. In a moment, your lips are together, this time with the simple magic of love. In his arms, you feel like you’re home.
Noctis spin you around, happiness overflowing from his heart. “C’mon. I’ve saved the best for last!” And you are off, again.
Onwards you swim, over the great chasm Bismark emerged from, through sandy stretches of nothing, until you saw a beaming light on the horizon. Noctis turns to you, “That’s my home. The crown jewel of the Lucian Seas: Insomnia.” You smile at his excitement.
As you approach, your heart sinks, though. Something is wrong.
Black ooze drips from the buildings of the city, the coral sits still, bleached white. Screams can be heard. Noctis’s face drains of color in an instant.
Forward you push, your free hand making its way to the blade Noctis bestowed upon you.
Upon arrival, you see them: daemons. Glowing eyed black creatures of every size. Many look like varieties you have seen on land, but with aquatic features.
A pale merman with sun colored hair sees your approach. “NOCT!” he cries, unleashing a water gun on a daemon.
“Prompto!” Noctis calls as you swim nearer.
“I’m…woah, wait…WHAT?!?!” The merman, apparently named Prompto, rests his wide eyes on you.
“No time to explain.” Noctis replies. Sparkling blue magic swirls around his hands before a sword materializes in them. “C’mon!”
The three of you fight your way through daemons, making for a nearby building. You hold your own; your swordwork is clumsy in water, but you quickly adapt.
Entering the building, Noctis pushes you to a wall. Magic sparks again and a clear barrier is erected over the doorway. “Stay here! I’ll be back!” He says to you, making his way effortlessly through the barrier. Prompto looks back at you, worry filling his eyes.
“Wait!” You cry, making for the door, but the barrier stops you in your tracks.
“Please, [Y/N]. I can’t’ have anything happen to you! Please, just…stay here.” Noct begs you from the other side.
He sets his mouth before turning away. The merman and his friend swim away, cutting their way through daemons. But your prison does not go unnoticed.
Smaller daemons, sensing easy prey, find the barrier. They bash into it, over and over, scaring you each time. You are cornered within Noctis’s good intentions.
A tentacled ronin takes notice of the commotion, gliding towards the barrier. The smaller daemons move out of its way. It stares at you before unleashing one lighting fast swing of its katana. You can see a crack in the barrier against the water. It shifts, readying itself for another strike. Your heart pounds, the sword in your hands feeling suddenly miniscule.
“GAAH!” A shout rings out. A hulk of a merman attacks the ronin with a greatsword the size of his body. Another flash, daggers land in each of the smaller daemons.
A spectacled merman approaches the barrier, banishing the magic with a wave of his hand. Noctis’s words ring through your head, “… on our lives.” Oh, no. Are they here to dispatch you?
“Are you alright, [Y/N]?” The poised merman asks.
“Er…yes. How do you know my name?” You reply, still backing away from your new guests.
“Oh, we know a lot about you. The Prince isn’t as sneaky as he thinks he is.” The hulking merman retorts.
You stare at them for a moment, shock painted across your features.
“Prince?” Is all you can say.
The two mermen shared a concerned look.
“Er…yes. We’ll let him explain the details to you.” The spectacled man breaks the silence. “Until then, I’m Ignis, that is Gladio, and your Prince Noctis is in danger.”
He is what?! Bravery surges against the walls of fear holding you back. With a short lived spurt, you push out the door of your former prison, past Gladio and Ignis.
“What are you waiting for? Then let’s go!” You call back.
Gladio grins wickedly. “I like ‘em.” He grabs your arm and heaves you to his back. “Hang on!” He yells as he surges forward. You cling to his shoulder.
The three of you make your way to a great castle, built of coral  and gleaming shells. The entire structure glows white against the blue of the vast ocean beyond. The sight would be breathtaking if you were not so hurried to find Noctis.
You find him, backed into the middle of the throne room with Prompto and a great regal merman. Daemons circle around them.
Into the fray you and your compatriots charge. Your legs providing you with the ability to push off from the sea floor and walls, a tactic the daemons weren’t expecting.
Back to back you fight with the Prince. Your newfound numbers are able to dispatch the rest of the daemons quickly.
As the water settles, all eyes wander towards you. Gods above, this is awkward, you think.
The king clears his throat, eyes drilling into your very soul.
Noctis is before you in an instant! “Father, stop!”
Currents swirl. Soon, three more mermen are beside him.
“Your majesty, please…” Ignis begins.
“Look! They helped us! They’re not so bad!” Prompto adds, gesturing to you.
“And if Noct likes them, we like them.” Gladio ends.
“Would you all give me a moment to speak?!” The king bursts, a smile growing on his face.
Outside of battle, you can study his features. He had kind eyes and a graying beard. His facial structure is that of Noct’s.
“You there, what is your name?” The king booms.
“[Y/N]…your majesty.” You add, bowing.
The king merely laughs. “I am King Regis of the Lucian Sea. As I’m sure my son has informed you, on your many escapes,” he side eyes Noctis. Moving towards you, he continues: “The mermen have sworn an oath to disavow all human contact…upon penalty of death.”
You look at the ground, nodding. Your heart is pounding. The future is uncertain.
“This is an oath taken against dishonorable creatures, selfish beings who seek only power…”
“But I’m not…”
The King holds up his hand to silence you. The effect reverberates through the entire ocean.
“But the oath does not contemplate a human who proves themself to be a hero.” The King beams at you.
Noctis drifts back to your side, taking your hand. The King makes his way through the remaining line.
“I think it’s high tide we…reevaluate that oath, don’t you?” He smiles down at his son. Noctis nods.
“[Y/N], what do you think of our glowing kingdom?” Regis asks.
You’re in awe: royalty is talking to you! “I…I like it…” You say sheepishly. Noctis grips your hand, adding strength to you heart.
“Good, because I hope, and I think my son does, as well, that you’ll be spending a lot of time here.” Regis smiles as he swims away. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, we have a city to care for.” Noctis’s friends smile as he embraces you, leaving to join Regis.
You and Noctis kiss, passionately and deep. Your life has just changed like the coast after a great storm.
“So, ‘prince’, huh?” You ask, pulling away.
“Oh…er…yeah.” He retorts, sheepishly.
You smile on his lips. “It suits you.”
He laughs. “Then we’ll need to find you a suitable title.”
Epilogue:
King Regis became the first king in the Lucian Sea to challenge the old oath, entrusting you as the ambassador to the humans.
Seeking out old magic, Noctis and Regis were able to to grant you your own tail. Being primarily human, though, it would vanish if you left the sea, replaced by your normal legs.
The village of Ogvar was soon renamed Mermaid’s Haven, as rumors of two people wielding water magic who had emerged from the sea spread across Eos. Every shore would later be filled with merpeople greeting the humans.
You spent most of your time in Insomnia, training with your newfound friends. You truly felt like you had found your home.
The daemons seemed to vanish from the sea, for a time. But evil was at work, watching with dark eyes as the sun slowly set.
            It turned out one could still miss out certain opportunities when one happened to be a frequent traveler. Trick or treating was one of these activities – going from door to door in a delightfully frightening costume to ask for some sweets. The elezen has participated it as a child, of course, ( and she had pride in the quality of her tricks ) but she has yet to experience it from the other point of view. A shame, especially with her knack of cooking, but it would seem that getting stranded in this city did have some merits.
            And now one question remained: what kind of confectionery should she provide? Lycelle could just create some pumpkin cookies or buy a pack somewhere else, but that won’t do. She wanted to make things special.
            Walking around this evening helped turn the gears in her mind, although all this brainstorming was getting her nowhere. It was in this moment did she spot a fellow dweller in the night. And they seemed like a kid as well – her target audience. Perfect!
            She quickly made her way towards him. “Hello, if I could have but a moment of your time. May I ask you something?”
@seattle-hq
Hello everyone! My name is Tabitha, and I’m so excited to meet you all! Mal and Lauren are absolute babes, and I know Seattle’s going to be absolutely amazing. I’m just bringing in one bb to start off, but may already have a few ideas for another, once I get back into the swing of school and work! Here’s a little about who I’m bringing in:
Tumblr media
Marley Callahan | Twenty six | Waitress at Pop’s
tw: substance abuse
Born and raised in a small town in Arizona by a single teenage mother with a substance abuse problem.
Always dreamed of moving far, far away, seeing the world, and planned on doing so after high school.
It was once she actually got to high school that a wrench got thrown into her plans. A wrench by the name of UTP (wanted connection!).
Lasted althroughout high school, and would spend their nights together making a list of all the places they would go once there was nothing to hold them back in Arizona.
While she was more than content with the idea of not attending college, the same couldn’t be said for her significant other who was beginning to realize that, while they did still want to travel, it wasn’t all they wanted.
A gap year, they’d suggested to her. Travel for a bit with the money they’d saved, but then get serious. Pick a place that they liked, and stay there. Attend school, get married, have kids...all of the things Marley had already decided for herself that she didn’t want. Not then, and maybe never. And yet, she agreed.
Graduation rolled around, and with a diploma finally in her hand, Marley was hit with the realization that she was compromising too much of herself.
As much as she loved her significant other, it didn’t stop her from packing up all of her stuff, taking all the money they’d put towards their traveling, and getting the hell out of Arizona without so much as a goodbye.
Took a bit to find her footing, after blowing through most of their money very quickly and considering a return home, but eventually found herself thrown into the world of yachting, putting the last of her money towards the brief schooling for it.
Not only did it pay well, but it meant getting to visit some of the most beautiful places in the world. It wasn’t permanent, Marley taking a break every once and awhile for a few months at a time to further travel, pick up some odd jobs here and there, and when she was ready, would turn right back around and board for another charter.
She’s currently on one of those breaks right now, relaxing in Seattle for a bit, waitressing at Pop’s for some extra cash, holed up in a cheap motel room in Central Seattle . Doesn’t know how long she’ll be around for, but is planning on having some fun while she’s here.
Some wanted connections for Marley include her ex (gender/name UTP), some co-worker’s (either at Pop’s or from her yachting days or anything in between), perhaps some fellow motel dwellers, regular customers, people she’s met on travels, or flirtationship/hookups!
I can’t wait to interact/plot with you all.
Splashing water on your face you shake your hands dry of water, it was another hour till you’d reach Giza. Your feet ached your head pounded and your stomach burned. The sun hung high in the sky as its rays beat down on you. The journey had come with few incidents until now, a loud shout from behind you snap you from the trance you had lulled in to. Turning, you see two Roman soldiers riding up to you, swords drawn “That’s her the slave that escape” Stopping your draw your sword prompting the men to jump off their mounts “Don’t be foolish desert dweller” one says as your rage bubbles up inside cursing under your breath you lunge at the man with a heavy sword strike. Your sword clashes with his as he smirks “Foolish girl” he says before blood begins dripping from the side of his mouth, looking down you twist your dagger deeper into his side, the next shouts as he runs at you, sword poised to impale you. Quickly turning he plunges his sword deep into partner so far it protrudes from his chest on the other side. Pushing the corpse, it falls on the man, bring your dagger to his throat he struggles under his fallen comrade “May you walk the Duat forever” you snarl slicing the soldiers throat.
 Having taken one of the men’s horses you made it to Giza quite quickly, starring up at the Pyramids you remember back to the time Tom came back from a long journey and told you of seeing them, and watching the sunset from the base. He promised one day you’d see them together, he promised one day you’d be free together. Now it was your turn to make a promise “I’m coming, my love” you whisper again clicking your tongue the horse trots down the sand and into the small village.
A merchant on the street stops you “Those are nice swords maybe you can help me with something” waving him away you snap “I don’t want to buy anything” stopping you again he shows holds up a shiny pendant. When your eyes meet the small metal end of the necklace you hold back a scream of rage. Grabbing the small man by the neck you squeeze “Where did you get that, it belongs to someone I am looking for.” You snap as the man chokes back a frightened squeal “The guards dragged a man, I can’t breathe” the young man chokes as you loosen your grip “They dragged him to a cart and rode off, I have no idea where they taking him” the man pleads as reach your free hand to your sword “West, okay. They headed west. The guards might know more” letting go of the man you throw one of the Roman soldier’s coin purses at him “Thank you” you say kindly placing Thomas’s necklace around your neck.
Slipping into the tent you read the words slowly and carefully: Commander the slave has been causing us much more trouble than he is worth, I have suggested punishment but you refuse. I have taken it upon myself to get rid of this man, he is on his way to Siwa as I write you. Please forgive me for going over your head and getting rid of him. Your loyal servant Huskro.  The words tore at your insides, how could he not be here? You didn’t come all this way for nothing, rushing from the tent you take a torch from its place on a pole throwing it at the cloth shelter you mount your steed. As black smoke rose in the sky hoofbeats against sand trailed away from the small Roman camp.
The desert rose and fell in the distance as your horse galloped over the seemingly endless sand dunes. With the sound of a distant cry you pull on the reins of the horse, the crying sounds close yet so far, as if it was all around you. Sliding off the side of the chocolate steed you call out “Hello” the cries become more desperate as you recognize the sound, it wasn’t just crying it was the sound of a child wailing. Calling out again the cries get closer, following your ears you run into the distance towing your horse behind you. The screams sound as though they are right next to you when your eyes meet a small colorful mound in the sand walking over to the small bundle of blankets you peel one back and the crying stops. Lying in the sand was a child, with eyes, a deep brown with his hair sat in curls on the top of his head. Reaching your hand out the baby screams and begins to ball once again, “Hush now child, you are safe” you shush pressing a hand to the child’s cheek. The skin feels as cold as ice as you brush against the soft cheek. Looking around you see no sign of life anywhere, feeling the child skin send a chill down your spin how was this possible, the hot sun burned the back of your neck as you stared at the child in awe. “Who left you” the question seems to calm the baby as its mouth opens “You” it whispers in shock you scramble to your feet and watching on in horror as the child is devoured by the sands. Shaking your head, you collapse into the dry hot sand your breath heavy as a man walks up to you “Rest now my love, Rest now” the man says as you feel yourself lift off the ground.
A wet rag sat atop your head as you sat with a jolt. Reaching for your dagger you find it missing “Calm down Madam, you had a nasty time out there” a raspy voice says snapping your head in his direction you find an old man sitting on a small stool eating something the smelled delicious out of a bowl. “Where am I?” you ask calmly spotting your weapons across the room “Siwa” the man says slurping his soup “I am Heroth, I found you in the sand sea, brought you and your horse here” he says as you sit upright grabbing your head as it throbs in pain “You’ve been out for almost a day now, you might want to eat something, drink too. The desert, it’ll get you if you aren’t careful.” Reaching for the cup on the table you bring it to your mouth. The tastelessness of water never felt so good as it washed away the dry cracks on your tongue “Thank you” you breathe grabbing the bowl and bringing it to your mouth “I’ve never seen a women like you, armed and eats like a true soldier” he laughs as he stands “Where do you hail from?” he asks grabbing your weapons and bringing them to you “I was the Queens slave in Alexandria” you say chewing the bit of food in your mouth “Long way from home don’t you think” he sighs taking a seat again “I am in search of my husband, in Giza I was met with nothing but more directions.” “Your husband, who is he?” Heroth asks “Greek man, brown curls, eyes dark like the coat of my stallion.” You say praying the man can lead you to your lost love. “If he was a slave, he would have been sold in the town square, the only Greek I’ve seen was a weak looking fellow beaten pretty bad.” The words the old man spoke tore your heart in two. “I saw him from my shop, he tried to escape, fought well for a looking so frail. They sent him to the garrison up on the hill. Amun be with him up there.” The man says saying a little prayer “How long ago?” standing your strap your belt on sheathing your sword and dagger “Two days, but before you depart some advice. I know you must love this man very much to come all this way but you cannot take on the whole guard by yourself. Cleopatra abandoned us, the Romans have oppressed and abused us. Give me one hour and I will get enough men together to give us a fighting chance.” The man pleads “You are honorable and brave old man” you smile “But I will not ask farmers and merchants to throw away their lives for me and my love.” You say as he grabs your arm “We aren’t doing this for you, Egypt has changed, it’s time the people, farmers, merchants, and slaves rise above those who would keep us down. We do not do this for you, we do this for Egypt.” The man says his eyes show pure rage and hate for the words he speaks are true. “You want to fight, then let’s fight” you snap rushing with the man into the heart of the city
“Y/n” a deep voice whispers in the night, turning you see Heroth accompanied by three dozen men armed with knives, pitchforks, swords, spears, bows, and even more weapons. “You are all willing to fight for your home” you shout quietly a chorus of cheers erupts over the men as they rally together. “Aren’t you gonna inspire us” a small voice in the crown squeaks “Um, I’m not a leader. I came here for one thing and that was to find Thomas, the love of my life. I never expected to bring with me a group of men brave enough to fight for their homeland. Some of you may lay down your lives on this night but if we succeed in freeing your home this will be the first step to freeing Egypt.” You shout as the men cheer “For Egypt” Heroth shouts “FOR EGYPT” the men shout as your storm the gates of the garrison.
Swiping your sword at a Roman soldier you sever his arm as another man stabs him with a long-pointed spear. The battle was in full rage now and it was your mission to find Thomas and no one would get in your way. Running through the smoke of battle you hear the distant battle cries of the townspeople. A large guard holding a heavy mace rushes at you weapon raised, meeting his pace you kick off a box jumping over the man’s attack. With the quick flick of your wrist, you release your dagger and let it fly into the mans back. Screaming in pain he turns to you, mace dragging on the floor he grunts swinging the large metal rod at you. Dodging it you swiftly slice his arm causing him to shout out again. Slamming his mace into the ground again he misses, lifting his weapon quickly he throws it at you. The heavy weapon slams into your leg as you scream out in pain, lumbering forward the man picks up your fallen sword raises it high above his head bringing it down fast he stops blood dripping down from his lips “Brute” the voice so quiet over the loud sound of battle you barely hear it until the small woman grabs your hand helping you to your feet. “Find your husband” she nods running back into the fight. Pulling your knife from the soldiers back you run to the prisons.
Scanning down a long row of cells you come to one three men inside breaking the lock with your blade the men rush to their feet “We must join the fight” they say along with small thanks “Have you seen a Greek, brown hair?” you stop one of the men “In there” he nods back to the cell before running off to join his fellow men. Pulling a torch off the wall you enter the small large cell scanning the floor you spot movement. In the dark corner of the cage lying on his back was Thomas. “Tom” you cry dropping your torch in the sand rushing to the side of your tattered love “Y/n” he chokes voice weak and dry. “It’s me, my love, I found you” Tom’s body was just like how Heroth described frail and beaten. Many bruises littered your husband's skin as his eye had swollen shut, his right arm appeared broken and his knees were bloody. His white skin was smudged with dirt and blood. The whites of his eyes were as red as the blood that poured from the open wound on his head. “You found me,” he says quietly tears sting your eyes as he chokes out words. Pulling the small flask off your belt you pour the water down his throat, “Our child” he says tears dripping from his eyes “Lost, like I thought you were” you cry as Tom coughs violently “We need to get out of here” you breathe grabbing his shoulders you try to lift him. Screaming out in pain you place his head on your lap “Please don’t leave me” you says softly as outside the cell men fight “I can’t move, you have to leave me” Thomas cries as you run your hand through his matted hair “I just found you, I won’t lose you again” you snap as he musters a weak smile “I will…” he coughs again clutching his side “My dearest Y/n, I will wait an eternity for you in the field of reeds” Tom smiles as you lean down and place a kiss upon his lips. “I love you” you sod, as a loud shout of unintelligible words sounds from outside of the cell. “I will forever be…” Tom chokes out as his breathing slows “yours” he says as his lungs expel one last time. Tears pour down your face as you hold the body of your husband in your hands “Thomas” you sob resting his head on the floor, pressing a kiss to his lips you cry out curses in Egyptian “We will walk together my love” you says through ragged breaths pulling your dagger from its place on your belt you raise it “Forever” you breathe plunging the metal deep into your abdomen letting out a shaky gasp you collapse to the floor, reaching over you grab Tom’s hand squeezing as the man rushes your side “We won” he shouts as the life leaves your body
A cool breeze blows through the vast field looking to your right you see Thomas holding a small infant in his arms “Meet our son” he says handing the small child to you with a smile.
What to do in Sofia: The ultimate Sofia travel guide
Hello fellow travellers! Alexx here from Finding Alexx. I’m on a year-long solo adventure to a new country every week for a year, with my route based entirely off the cheapest flight each Tuesday. Yep, it’s as hectic as it sounds! This insane adventure took me to Sofia, a gorgeous hidden gem in the Balkans and the capital city of Bulgaria. Here’s all you need to know if you’re considering a trip to Sofia, from what to do, where to sleep to how to get around and more.
Where to stay in Sofia
Let’s kick this off with some good news… Sofia is the ideal spot if you’re on a budget! There are plenty of cheap hostels in Sofia with dorm beds for less than $13 a night, or you can get a budget-friendly hotel room from about $32 a night.
Normally I’m a big advocate for accommodation with full kitchen facilities so you can save money on food, but food in Sofia is so cheap (and good!) that there’s honestly no need to cook your own food.
Some great options for places to stay in Sofia are Generaator Hostel, Peter Pan Hostel, 5 Vintage Guest House and the aptly-named Hotel Cheap.
How to get around Sofia
If you’re staying in the city centre and you don’t mind getting your steps up, you’ll probably be able to see the city pretty easily by foot. A lot of the main sights are within walking distance, and wandering aimlessly around the city was how I found loads of my top food recommendations!
If you prefer to get somewhere quicker (and maybe drier), there are trams, buses and the metro. A single ride is 1.60BGN (about 90 cents) or a day pass with unlimited travel is 4BGN (about $2).
There’s no Uber in Sofia, but there is a great local taxi app that does the same thing, called TaxiMe. You can sign up with your UK number, add in your credit card and hail a ride through the app just like you would anywhere else.
To get to and from the airport easily and relatively cheaply, I’d recommend getting a taxi from the airport taxi stand. Only one company is authorised to provide taxi services at the airport and they’ve got standard fare rates, so follow the signs to the official taxi area and you’ll be looked after. To get into the city centre you should pay about 15-20BGN ($8-$12).
On a super tight budget? You can get the metro from Terminal 2 at the airport to Serdika station for 1.60BGN (cash only so you’ll need to use an ATM at the airport), then transfer to a bus, tram or other metro to get closer to your hotel.
How much to budget for Sofia
Yay for cheap destinations! Much like my week in Warsaw, Sofia was a real treat for my wallet.
If you’re looking for a challenge, Sofia is actually possible to experience from only $15-$20 per day. This would cover cheap hostel accommodation ($9-$13) and supermarket or bakery food (up to $7). You can see loads of the beautiful buildings for free, and with a bit of Googling you could self-guide a city tour to learn about the city’s communist history.
To add in a nice local meal ($6-$10), a drink ($3) and the donation for a free walking tour ($6), I’d recommend budgeting around $40 a day.
You can get freshly baked goodies from local bakeries for less than 1BGN (about 65 cents), decent sandwiches or salads for lunch from 4-8BGN ($1.95-$4.50) or slightly fancier sit-down dinners from 12-20BGN ($6.50-$12). A local beer will cost anything from 2BGN to 6BGN depending on where you are ($1.30-$4).
The best things to do in Sofia
Despite it not being as well-known as other Eastern European hot spots like Prague and Budapest, the city has a lot going for it and there’s endless things to do in Sofia no matter what you’re into.
Gain some insight into Bulgaria’s rocky past, shop for second-hand goodies at flea markets, eat your heart out at some of my favourite cafés from all my travels, or escape the urban jungle and head out to explore another nearby city. Here’s five of the best things to do on your Sofia trip.
1. Learn about communist history
Bulgaria’s political past is something that’s still woven throughout the city, with huge headquarters, architecture, museums and statues representing the communist era from 1946 to 1989.
Whether you’re a total newbie to communist history or all clued up and want to see how if affected Bulgaria specifically, there’s a couple of places and tours to add to your Sofia communism class.
Coming from New Zealand, where communism’s never touched anywhere near our little corner of the world and where I opted for maths and science classes over history, geography and politics (nerd, I know), my knowledge of Eastern Europe’s communist regimes was limited.
First up is the Free Sofia walking tour, which runs three or four times a day (depending on the season) and is tip-based. Your local tour guide will take you around 20 of Sofia’s must-see spots, and you’ll get a decent overview of the history and politics of the city, as well as a local’s tips on things to do, eat and see.
Free Sofia also has a daily communism tour for only $11, which gives you a three-hour in-depth walk through of the city’s communist landmarks as well as an insight into what Sofia was like to live in during those 43 years.
Want more? Consider visiting the National Historical Museum or the Museum of Socialist Art, which is home to the huge red star that sat on top of the communist party’s headquarters before being overthrown in the late 80’s.
2. See the city’s most beautiful religious buildings
While the dominant religion in Bulgaria by far is Bulgarian Orthodox (at about 60%), there are some simply stunning churches, mosques, cathedrals and monasteries in the capital city.
Start off with the most epic building in the city, and one of the coolest buildings I’ve ever seen, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. This seriously impressive Orthodox church was started in 1882 but not finished until 30 years later, and it’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Bulgaria’s capital city, with a 45m high gold-plated dome and interior made of onyx, marble and other ultra-fancy materials.
Other Orthodox churches that are worth a visit are St Nicholas Church (a Russian Orthodox church), the Sveti Sedmochislenitsi Church, and Sveta Nedelya Church, which has a dramatic history including a funeral bombing in 1925 by the Communist Party where over 500 of Bulgaria’s elite political figures were injured and 150 were killed.
After Eastern Orthodox, the next most common religion is Islam, with up to 15% of the population identifying as Muslim. Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule for almost 500 years, from the late 1300s until the Russian Empire took on the Ottoman Empire in 1878, but after being liberated thanks to Russia’s victory and then declaring independence in 1908, many buildings from this era were repurposed or destroyed. The 16th century Banya Bashi Mosque is the only functioning mosque left in Sofia, and as such it’s a bustling hub for the city’s Muslim community.
Ancient history fans will want to make a stop at Sveti Georgi, a 4th-century Christian church built by the Romans in the ancient city of Serdica. It’s the oldest building in the city, and it’s home to some stunning frescoes dating back to the 10th century.
3. Devour all the cheap food
I’m a big proponent for cooking your own food while travelling to stick within a tight budget, and usually allow myself a bit of spending money each week for a meal or two out. Buttttt in Sofia, I ate out every single meal of the whole week. Yes, I said every single meal!
The local food scene is not only cheap, but it’s actually seriously impressive too. From bakeries where you can get four pastries or savouries for the equivalent of €1, to Instagrammable brunch spots with next level dishes, to traditional restaurants serving up home-style dishes, I would go back in a second literally just for the food.
There’s bound to be an eatery in Sofia perfect for whatever type of food tickles your fancy, but here are some of my favourites.
Bistro Pesto was my number one, and I’m not ashamed to say I had lunch there four days in a row! They’re a super cute corner restaurant close to the main shopping boulevard, and they serve Italian food all day and night. Their panini menu is amazing; authentic Italian ingredients and a Bulgarian price tag. Win win!
If you’re looking for a funky food photo (no judgement here), check out the brunch menu at Rainbow Factory or Boho. I didn’t make it to Rainbow Factory but my hostel mates raved about it, and I can personally vouch for the Oreo pancake stack at Boho. Mmmmhmmmm.
And for a reasonably-priced but delicious sit-down dinner, be sure to visit the legends at Shtastlivetsa, a chain restaurant with a HUGE menu of home-cooked meals. Prices are understandably a bit higher than the local street food stalls, but the service is fantastic, the meals are massive and there are plenty of hearty Bulgarian dishes to choose from.
4. Head into the mountains
Sofia’s landscape is rare in terms of European capital cities, because there’s a mountain range so close to the city centre. The bottom of Vitosha Mountain is only 10kms or so from the city, and it’s easily reachable by taxi, public transport, or walking if you want to make a day of it.
In summer Vitosha is a popular hiking destination, where city-dwellers escape to on weekends to get some fresh air. The highest peak is 2290m but there’s also hikes around the bottom half of the mountain to different rivers and waterfalls.
During winter, the mountain is a ski resort, perfect for any snow bunnies on a budget. Although it is significantly less-developed than other European ski destinations like Switzerland and France, your day pass and rental will be much cheaper and your money will go way further.
As well as being an adrenaline activity hot spot, Vitosha is home to another Sofia must-see and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boyana Church. Boyana is an Orthodox church from the 11th century and is famous for the many frescoes it houses, particularly a collection from way back in 1259.
5. Take a day trip
There’s some pretty incredible places to see and experience outside of Sofia itself, so if you’ve got the time, I’d recommend trying to squeeze in a day trip or two!
My top pick for a day trip from Sofia is Plovdiv, another Bulgarian city and one of the two 2019 European Capitals of Culture. Plovdiv is a couple of hours away from Sofia by bus, and tickets cost about £6 each way. Once you’re in the city I’d recommend jumping on a free walking tour, run by the same organisation who run the Sofia tour. They’ve got a city tour daily year-round as well as a free graffiti tour daily from October to April. And if you want to explore yourself, don’t miss the unique coloured houses that line the streets in the old town, it’s different to every other European old town I’ve seen!
Fancy a work out? There’s no better place in Bulgaria to get moving than in the Seven Rila Lakes area. Seven Rila Lakes is, you guessed it, home to seven glacial lakes in the Rila mountain range, and all are between 2100m and 2500m of altitude. It is possible but it’s tough to get there on public transport so it’s best to hire a car and drive (1.5-2 hours), or to book an organised day tour or shuttle bus. Bonus tip: Don’t miss Rila Monastery, a 10th-century Eastern Orthodox monastery and the largest in the country. Well worth a visit!
619
The darkness closed in around her and with it came the oppressive stagnant air and thick humidity typical of a balmy summer night in Virginia. It was the sort of night that clung to your skin with the sticky determination of a lonely ex-boyfriend. Mosquitoes clouded the air, leaving their mark on her flesh as they sang their pitchy tune in her ear. Over the whine of mosquitoes rang the cacophony of summer wildlife; eerie night sounds that dogged her every step as she trudged through the dry grass along the crumbling asphalt of state route 619. She was raised a country girl, but her temperament towards nature leaned more towards the tastes of a New York City dweller. She had never cared for the woods, especially after dark. The mere thought made her notably uncomfortable. And yet here she was, stranded on a remote country road at night. Alone.
She shivered despite the late summer heat as she peered into the darkness with longing, desperate for any hint of headlights; a fellow traveler on this desolate stretch of night road. She strained her ears against the deafening rattle of cicadas, listening for the sound of a revving engine in the distance. But she knew she’d be better off walking the ten miles back to town than climbing into a car with the sort of riff-raff who drove this road at this ungodly hour of night.
She had left her car on the shoulder nearly thirty minutes prior, a white plastic bag hanging from the antenna and a hastily scribbled note on the windshield saying something along the lines of “broke down, will be back for this piece of shit in the morning.” Although she would not have been heartbroken should it be towed to some back-lot junkyard to crumble and decay. She wouldn’t miss it, she told herself; she’d be grateful to be rid of it.
In her pocket, her phone chirped. It was a single frantic staccato, a final plea for a charger as the last of its battery life drained away. It didn’t matter anyhow; there was no hope of a signal out here.
This was it, she thought, this was how her short, pointless life would end: at the hands of some deep woods, swamp-dwelling cannibal in Back Road, Virginia. Not exactly the “off-the-beaten-path” road trip she’d had in mind. In reality, she half expected to unwittingly stumble across an old rusted pick-up parked alongside the swamp, lights off and engine cut as the shifty-eyed owner rolled the non-descript duffle bag containing his latest victim into the dark, stagnant water. She shivered again. Now, that’s enough of that.
She was just being dramatic. Of course she would be fine. After all, this was the country. Of all the places for her to be stranded, this was probably one of the safest. It was certainly a hell of a lot safer than the inner city neighborhood she called home. Out here, her biggest worry was being eaten alive by mosquitoes.
She could already see the distant lights of houses through the trees on the other side of the swamp and she knew that soon she would come upon a side road or a lane. Some street that led to those lights, to civilization, and a phone.
A twig snapped somewhere in the forest. Such a small sound, yet it echoed off the trees like a drum. She froze, scanning the darkness for movement, wishing she’d borrowed her sisters little pink handgun before leaving on this trip.
The peepers fell silent, the abrupt stillness far louder than their chorus of shrill chirps. Another crack. Somewhere nearby the sudden flapping of a startled bird made her jump. Heart hammering in her chest, she peered into the dark tree line. A lone silhouette rose from the darkness, seeming to peel away from the swamp itself. Four long, thin legs and a lean body. A head lifted and she felt eyes on her. For what felt like hours but was probably more like two seconds, she couldn’t move. She stared at the strange shadow in the swamp until her mind was able to rationalize what she was looking at. She let out a whooshing breath of relief and felt her heart start beating again.
For fuck’s sake, she told herself, it’s just a deer. Calm down.
In an instant, she felt her relief melt away as she watched the silhouette slowly rise onto two legs, silently ascending to twice its original height in one fluid movement. Its shoulders rolled back, long arms unfurled at its sides, and she realized it had hands. This wasn’t an animal. The creature standing before her now had the unmistakable outline of a person. For a long time, it did not move. Just stood there, staring at her. The only sound was her own shuddering breath. Gone was any hint of the summer wildlife that had been so loud only moments before. She was suddenly very aware of just how far away the lights of those houses were.
“Hello?” Her voice sounded breathy, frightened. She didn’t know what she would do if the figure answered. What sort of person would be out here in the swamp at this time of night? Maybe he's just fishing? She thought hopefully.
Its head cocked to one side at the sound of her voice.
“My-my car broke down.” She babbled nervously, her voice barely above a whisper. She gestured at the distant houses. “I’m just trying to get to a phone.”
The figure seemed to quiver as she spoke. It let out a small grunt, it's head dipping towards her slightly before rolling to the other side.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt…whatever you are doing.” What was wrong with her? Why was she explaining herself? Stop talking to the weirdo in the swamp. Shut up and start running, dumbass.
Long fingers twitched erratically at its sides as it watched her quietly.
“You, um, you look busy. I’ll just leave you alone.”
She took a step back, willing her feet to run, but she couldn’t make her legs spring into action. She couldn’t bring herself to break eye contact with the figure for fear that as soon as she looked away it might move.
At her sudden movement, its head snapped upright and it's body stiffened. She froze as it let out a low growl. Its shoulders hunched and it sank into a low crouch.
What the… She took a step backwards, and then another. Before she could turn and run, it let out a piercing bark like the frenzied cry of a fox and launched itself at her. She glimpsed pale eyes in the moonlight as it descended upon her, and as her screams drowned in a wet symphony of tearing flesh and popping bone, they were carried off on the breeze as it slid through the rustling branches, gradually replaced with a discordant chorus of frogs and summer cicadas.
