Ghost Helpline part 8
All in all Uncle Dans lecture had been rather short and to the point. There had been no yelling, no anger, no demeaning or things thrown. While there had been a scowl at hearing the term Uncle he took Konstelacios explanation in stride. Dan sighed a lot but he wasn’t angry.
So why did she feel so awful? Uncle Dan always had anger problems, but she trusted him ether way. How couldn’t she after surviving an entire war with him. She was use to anger, she could take anger. Not, not whatever this was.
Konstelacio felt pressure push down on her chest. She didn’t like this at all! Her head hurt, yelling would have been easier.
//“ Let me get this straight. You did a favor for the Justice League and for payment you asked for loose change?!!!!”//
She rubbed at her horns in a attempt to soothe herself. They didn’t know who she was, it’s not as if she had defamed the family in any way. It’s not as if she asked for money directly… then again maybe that would have been better. She may be a Masters but it’s not as if any of the money was hers. She frowned, was it because she didn’t assert herself for their house? Had she made them look poor?
The little demon hunched in on herself she hadn’t meant to do any of that at all. Thank god she didn’t mention the handkerchief.
At the thought of the article she pulled it out and looked at it along with the rest of her prizes. She smiled a tad lopsided, “Looks like I need a belt.” And she knew someone just tech savvy enough to make her one.
— — —-
Dan was tired, but sated. Better than being soup in a thermos shaped cell. He missed war.
The fight for the throne hadn’t been as easily won as Danny’s family had assumed. Pariah, Dark had been gone for too long, the infinite realms cutting themselves into pieces. Distancing themselves, becoming stagnant, refusing to allow a ‘ghost’ of all beings rule them again. But Danny had grown to be more than that; a child of death herself, true balance, the great one. Dan snickered to himself, what a lame title.
Dan had demanded his place among the throngs of soldiers. He had earned his place as general. He killed and fought… and protected. Jazz was his sister again, his confidant (therapist). So when she pulled him a side one day to ask him a favor, Dan said yes.
Dan should have asked more questions.
Dan ended up keeping an eye on three forever children on a battle field. Which was easier said than done. They were reckless, suicidal shit heads with everything to prove. And they did; the witch boy, the host, the demon-ling. He hated to say it but the war might have not been won with out them. It hurt to think about.
It hurt to think about Vlad swooping in and giving them what Dan couldn’t. It hurt to see the host be a hero instead of a child. It hurt to see the demon sell her abilities for change. He huffed, flaming hair waving. At least the witch had the sense to run away from those that used him.
Dan sighed and signed and signed and signed papers. Fucking Aragon.

No one paid attention as Booster Gold hobbled threw the doors. Blue Beetle should be in soon. Some of the leaguers even rolled their eyes honestly Booster was such a douche.
They ignored him as he practically threw himself on the couch, holding his ice pack to his head. So the idiot had also managed to get himself injured. Huh figures.
“Hey! Nightwing!”
“Haha hey Booster! How was space?”
“Crazy! Hey what’s up with everyone?”
“It’s along story.”
“I got time.”
“Honestly Booster it’d probably be faster for me to give you a copy of the reports.”
“Ugh reading! Come onnnn.”
Nightwing figured he could humor the man for a few minutes, “Well long story short we meet a demon.”
“Mmmhhhmm”
“They seem to be helping us but we just want to get more info on her to be careful.”
“Wow a real demon. Was she hot?”
“She was like 13.”
Booster got quite in a way Nightwing wouldn’t recognize until later, “Oh word? What did she look like?”
“All the footage was corrupted but Robin managed to make us a decent sketch.”
Booster Gold got everyone’s attention when he almost face planted onto Dicks tablet, “Oh my god! Oh my god! Did she have metal legs?”
“You mean boots yeah she had metallic …”
“Oh my god! And stripes right!!!” Booster was practice on-top of Nightwing dopey smile on display.
Dick thought back to the mass of black cracks on the girls body, “Stripes?”
“Oh MY Ancients! It Konny!!! I’ve missed her so much!” Booster started to laugh before devolving into tears, “I hope she’s not working for CW anymore. Last time I heard she was on trial for some bogus shit. I hope she’s okay.”
Booster continued to cry as Kord came in glared daggers an Nightwing and took off with his husband.
Dick stared at the open door, “What just happened???” His eyes widened as he stood up ‘Konny’ he never told Booster her name.

Asmodeus often considered himself a reasonable demon. He wasn’t usually quick to anger unless someone insulted his appearance, which usually ended up being one of his brothers- and even then, he could chalk that up to just plain jealousy. Everyone knew he was beautiful- how could they not? And with all the time he spent on his routines, he felt as if his irate responses for someone calling him hideous were deserved. So even then, he considered every reaction he had to be 100% fair and just.
Well, that all changed when he met you. Something about you made his reason slip away. It almost made the pressure to keep up his pristine looks dwindle to the point where he didn’t care- only finding your companionship to be what he needed to feel whole and loved. He obviously didn’t falter- he still loved the attention from others and enjoyed the praise, but he had a special place in his heart set aside especially for you.
It was unfortunate that you had a partner though. Asmo couldn’t put his finger on why the human irked him upon first meeting, and just chalked it up to him having a bitter attitude. However, after getting to know you and your insecurities, he realized how damaging your boyfriend’s words had been to you. He tried multiple times to convince you to leave- reminding you of your beauty and worth, but you were scared. Of what, he wasn’t quite sure until now.
Asmo heard the frantic knocks at his door and immediately felt his heart drop to his stomach. He recognized your voice in an instant, begging to be let in and apologizing profusely for interrupting his live-stream through tears. He couldn’t ignore you, even if he wanted to. So he told his live chat that he needed to end early tonight before abruptly ending the stream of his latest Q&A.
He jumped up and raced to the door, flinging it open onto to have you immediately catapulting your body into his arms. Your small whimpers turned into deep, pained wails before he even managed to shut the door and carry you to his bed. He hushed you, promising you that he was here and that he wasn’t going to leave any time soon. Apologies were muttered but he would hear none of it, reassuring you that you were far more important than some stupid question about the brand of foundation he uses.
After what seemed like hours of intense sobbing and Asmo attempting to comfort you, you finally composed yourself enough to tell him what had happened. Little did he know, he was completely unprepared for what you were about to say.
“W-we broke up...” you sniffled, trying your best not to stutter too much.
“Did you!?” Asmo tried (and failed) to contain his excitement. “Why is this such a terrible thing then? We’ve talked about how he treats you and-”
“That’s not why I’m panicking...” you bit your lip, trying to think of what to say. “I...I have tried to break up with him before, but he...”
Asmo leaned in, wiping away a stray tear from your cheek. He noticed your hesitation, and you never had opened up to him about your specific fears of leaving the man before, so he tried his best to reassure he was safe to talk to. “It’s okay, Mc. I wont judge you. You're safe here.”
You suck in a deep breath. “He threatened to post some...pictures and videos that he had of me. I didn’t even know that he had them- he must have taken them when I was sleeping, o-or when I was drunk, o-or maybe he had a hidden camera...I...I...” Through fresh tears and sudden panic, the words died on your tongue.
Asmo took both of your hands in his and squeezed gently. “Shh, It’s okay Mc. Just take a few deep breaths. Take your time.”
He breathed deeply with you for a moment, getting your nerves to stabilize once more.
“Now, what do you mean he has photos and videos of you?” Asmo’s face twisted slightly, trying to hide the fact that he had a good inkling of what type of pictures you were referring to.
“uh...” you pause, looking away in shame. “N-nude photos...and videos of us...you know...”
Asmo scrunched up his nose in disgust. “Unfortunately yes, I get the idea. So he threatened to share them to get you to stay?”
You nod. “Yeah...and...Well...I ended things again, and this time I stuck to it...but...I didn’t think he would actually post them...” another fit of sobs threatened to escape from your vocal cords as you whimpered, trying to hold back tears.
Asmo’s collar grew hot with anger. He had such intimate media of you, not only taken without your consent, but to share it with others in order to keep you at his side? That’s....That’s...
“Disgusting.” Asmo hissed under his breath, contempt dripping from his tongue. Oh, when I get his hands on that man, I’ll...
“I know, I know!” You wail, ripping your hands away to hide your now tear-stained face. “I am disgusting. I shouldn’t have said anything!”
“What?! No!” Asmo’s face softened and he took your hands in his once more. “No, darling. I didn’t mean you. I meant him!”
You glance up, searching for truth behind his sunset-colored eyes.
Asmo squeezed your hands and brought them to his chest, pulling you forward along with so that you could look directly into his eyes. “Mc, that man is a horrible, horrible person for sharing those things. He’s even worse for having them without your approval. This doesn’t mean anything about you, or how valuable you are.”
Your cries subdued, leaning forward to nuzzle into his neck. Asmo wrapped his arms around you. He rocked you gently, laying sweet kisses to your hair-line as he cooed words of support. After you seemed to calm down, he snatched his phone from his desk and pulled up Devilgram, searching for the media you mentioned he shared.
It didn’t take long for him to find it, as it had been blasted all over the featured page. Just like you had said, various photos of you in lingerie or in nothing at all were everywhere, and videos of you in various positions and stages of sex were posted along with them. When he noticed your body begin to quake at the sight of the pictures, he turned the screen away from you, having you rest your body in his lap as he cradled you. He held the phone above your head, out of sight as he worked, reporting each of the photos and texting the head of Devilgram’s marketing team to get his account suspended. Soon enough, the account was banned, the pictures were taken down, and a statement was put out by Devilgram regarding the photos and videos.
Asmo put his phone aside, returning his focus to you. Just as he began to explain that the media had been taken down, he noticed the soft rise and fall of your chest and soft snores slipping past your lips. He didnt realize you had fallen asleep, but he felt his heart flutter at the fact that you had felt so safe with him that you could.
After, he sent a text to the group chat, requesting that anyone who had seen the posts refrain from telling you and noting he would be taking care of things. He ignored Lucifer’s protests, who insisted that the man would be expelled from the program by the end of the week.
He knew he couldn’t wait that long, nor could he stand by and let him live after what he’d done to you
-------------------------------------------------------
Asmo lurked around The Fall, studying the faces of the patrons around him. Solomon had said he’d be here, and surely he wouldn’t be lying about something like this. His eyes scanned the dark room, trying to catch the overhead light flashing amongst the crowd to get a look at if your ex-boyfriend was amongst them.
Like a beacon in the night, he spotted him, just as the strobe flashed toward the north-corner booth, drinking cocktails with a few others.
Asmo’s nose twitched as he forced a suave smile, approaching through the crowd. He swung his hips sensually to the beat of the music, trying his best to activate his charming abilities despite the rage brewing within his chest. He stopped in front of the man’s table where he sat with a few other demons, snickering about something. He figured it likely had to do with you, and swallowed his hatred.
The man looked up, locking eyes with the most beautiful demon in Devildom, and grimacing slightly. “What do you want?”
Asmo smiled, showing a glimpse of his bright white fangs. He forced a sexy giggle, bending over the table and kicking a leg up behind him. “I want you, silly.”
The man quirked an eyebrow, attempting to come off as uninterested, but Asmo could sense the desire building behind his eyes. “What? Why me?”
Asmo drew circles around the rim of the man’s drink before lazily licking the rim salt off his fingers, drawing out the action purposefully. “Hmm...why wouldn’t I? After all, I saw the sort of things you did with Mc on Devilgram. I was hoping I could get a taste as well. It’s only fair, right?”
The man tried to resist the alluring way Asmo’s eyes flashed, and the scent of his pheromones wafting across the table. The other demons had already been smitten, staring at Asmo with entranced expressions, wishing his attention was on them. Asmo perked up and walked toward the VIP room, throwing a wink over his shoulder and gesturing for the man to follow. Unable to resist any more, the man quickly jogged to catch up, taking Asmo’s hand and closing themselves off from the rest of The Fall.
Once the door was fully closed behind them, Asmo pushed the man into one of the plush couches. He grinned mischievously, flicking the lock on the door so they would not be disturbed. The man’s hear raced, the clear hard-on in his pants obvious of his intense longing to have Asmo to himself. Asmo approached him, swaying his body and running his hands over the mesh of his crop top, ensuring to keep the man’s attention on his beauty...and away from the fact that his horns had already sprouted from his head.
Asmo knelt in front of the man, pushing his legs apart roughly before quickly making work of his belt and jeans. Before long, his head was between his legs as the man groaned in pleasure, eyes fluttering closed as he rested his head on the back of the couch.
Though the man's pleasure was short lived.
A rippling pain shot up from his groin and throughout the rest of his body, he shrieked, snapping out of his aroused haze, only to look down and see Asmo in full demon form, spitting his dick out to the side along with a mouth full of blood. The man was shocked, not knowing how to respond to the fact that Asmo had clearly fooled him with his charm, and had done one of the most horrendous things he could think of. The result was agonizing; continuous jolts of pain shooting through his whole body.
Before the man could scramble out of his grasp, Asmo's claws sank into his thigh, causing another pained wail to erupt from the mans chest. In one swift movement, Asmo sliced his nail across the man’s testicles, detaching them easily from his taint and sending them splattering on the floor. He screamed as loud as he could, trying to alert someone of his predicament, only to have his voice cut off by a firm hand gripping his neck, along with a hearty laugh from the Avatar of Lust.
“Hush now, Baby.” Asmo cooed, a nefarious inflection present in his tone despite its eery softness. “It’s only fair that you get what you deserve for the nasty way you treated Mc. It’s scum like you that give me a bad name, and I have a reputation to uphold, you know?”
Asmo tightened his grip and lifted the man as he tried to scream once more, cutting off his airflow completely. The man struggled in his grasp, slapping Asmo’s forearms and kicking his legs in desperation. On one of his kicks, his foot grazed Asmo’s leg, marking up his pants with the dirt under his shoe. Asmo looked down at the clear footprint now decorating his pants and frowned before turning his attention back to the weak human in his grasp.
“Well now...” Asmo clicked his tongue in annoyance. “I suppose you’ll have to pay for that too.”
Asmo clenched his fists tighter, causing the man’s eyes to nearly bulge out of his head from the lack of air in his lungs. He choked desperately as Asmo’s fists closed around his windpipe, snapping and crunching of the bones in his neck being the only other sounds audible above the thumping music and Asmo’s ragged breathing.
As the man began to go limp, Asmo quickly extending his claws and gave a final rough squeeze, puncturing the skin on 5 sides. The man’s face froze with his mouth hung open, eyes glazing over in a grey fog as his last attempts at gaining freedom were foiled. Asmo twisted his fingers, ripping through the skin of the mans neck before his lifeless body collapsed to the ground, the man’s head falling off Asmo’s clenched fist soon after.
He stood over the man, breathing heavily with a satiated feeling in his heart. He licked the blood off of one of his fingers, grinning at the irony taste of justice being served. He hadn’t realized how long it had been since he had eviscerated someone in such a way, but he relished in the high of how good it felt to indulge in a different side of his sin.
Asmo strolled out of the back room, dusting off his clothes among gasps and stares of the blood covering his face and hands. Murmurs and screams were heard in the distance as some of the patrons undoubtedly discovered the body of the man, but he could care less. The only thought in Asmo’s mind was returning to you and taking a long, hot bath.
Oh! Perhaps he could even test out his new Black Poinsettia bath bomb- something he had been waiting ages to try with you. He skipped gleefully back to the House of Lamentation, the adrenaline from the kill fading into the background as his mind and heart fluttered with ideas of how he could pamper you- showing you what true love really felt like.

Climate change is a mental health issue
And part of a solarpunk present…
Content warning: this article briefly talks about depression, suicide, and self-harm
In the course of researching for my thesis, I read a lot of things: scholarly books, articles, essays… but also lots of pulpy science fiction (of course), and also a lot of recent online articles (usually news or journalism) about climate change and its effects.
The recent essays and articles that I read had a fascinating overlap: they were talking about climate, but they were also talking about mental health. Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are a natural corollary of experiencing the climate changing.
(I have my own thoughts about how that leads to the very concept of the climate, or the environment more broadly, being a mental untouchable or taboo topic, that many peoples’ thoughts automatically shy away from; a way that their minds are helping to insulate and protect them from a negative psychosomatic experience. Thus, why it can be so difficult for many to address climate change because our very minds are refusing to allow us to face the scary thing directly, because it kicks up such a strong instinctual fight/flight/freeze response. But, this is a tangent, and one I am extremely underqualified to take. Someone call in some psychologists…)
Back in 2005, philosopher Glenn Albrecht coined the term “solastalgia”, which is a neologism that, according to the author in a 2007 article for PubMed, operates
As opposed to nostalgia--the melancholia or homesickness experienced by individuals when separated from a loved home--solastalgia is the distress that is produced by environmental change impacting on people while they are directly connected to their home environment.
When I started researching (only 8 years ago!), this was one of the only publicly accessible and known terms (in English) outside of a specific niche of (western) academia to describe this phenomenon of the way that climate change can be pretty entwined with significant mental health issues.
Albrecht is Australian. He used the examples of open-pit coal mining, or deforestation. In the almost twenty years since that publication, I think the global community can add phenomena such as catastrophic wildfires, persistent and ruinous sea-level rise, tailing ponds spillage, industrial water poisoning, widespread drought, melting permafrost, century floods, and more to that list.
This is part of why I was so keen to do an interview about climate grief chaplaincy, which I had never heard of before. Even now, only two years later, therapists and psychologists are starting to advertise climate-focused services. On the one hand, I am so very glad that assistance is being offered to those who need it. On the other, I’m big mad about how, yet again, the issue of climate change is being framed as an individual problem.
At least chaplaincy is very conscious of community—as Gabrielle explains in the episode, there is a strong tradition of movement chaplaincy among activist groups in the so-called United States that is tuned into a more collective experience and casts climate change in that light (more appropriately, I feel).
Solarpunk’s dream of a just, sustainable future isn’t solely for bodies. There’s an aspect of being human - our mind, our mental health, our intangible selves, our spirit, what some would call our soul - that merits careful attention as well. I imagine that any community that is truly solarpunk pays just as much attention to what cannot be quantified about the human experience as what can be.
And if we are to have a hope of attaining that care-ful attention to the human being as a whole, it would behoove us to begin practicing thinking about, caring for, and paying attention to that aspect of our selves in the present day.
One way to do this would be for any climate journalism, going forward, to include links and references to local climate helplines, actions, and groups as relevant to the discussion in the article, in the same way that articles dealing with suicide, self-harm, depression, and other extremely difficult topics are already doing.
Realizing the mental toll that a swiftly-changing-for-the-worse climate has on readers, especially young people, is to my mind a journalistic duty of care. It has been shown many times that an important mitigating factor of climate anxiety and climate grief is the chance afforded to do something, to act on the knowledge that the reader has just learned. Another huge mitigating factor is not feeling alone in the face of overwhelming odds and at the mercy of negative feelings.
In the midst of my studying, I began to volunteer at my local food bank, for example. Being in the community and having a tangible way to help other humans (and knowing that I was helping to ease their burdens of anxiety and stress, as well as cope with the food shortages induced by climate change and lend a hand to an organization struggling to help its members) was extremely helpful in mitigating my own dark night of the soul of post-apocalyptic despair and grief in that moment.
Did it solve everything? Nope. Did it make my climate anxiety disappear? Not a chance. But it helped ease it generally, and for four hours a week it banished my anxieties around the climate almost completely; in my experience, it’s hard to feel shitty when I’m not afforded the luxury of dread, but instead am in the midst of facing (a corner of) the issue head-on.
I discovered solarpunk on Tumblr back in the twenty-teens, and I was hooked. Part of why I like solarpunk so much is the emphasis on doing what you can, when you can, to make things better now - even if it’s just the corner of the neighbourhood you live in. The effect on mental health of even just picking up litter can be tremendous. Another reason I’m such a fan of solarpunk is that it is a shared experience, one where terms like ‘climate grief’ and ‘climate anxiety’ aren’t up for debate but instead are nuanced and treated seriously, and it is a diverse community to be part of, one that continually evolves and changes and isn’t afraid to have difficult conversations, respectuflly. Access to feeling better in the face of the denial and despair of the Anthropocene should be available to everyone, no matter where they are or who they are.
What do you do to mitigate your own negative climate emotions? I’m no longer able to volunteer at that food bank (I moved, and now I can’t lift things for health reasons, it’s a whole thing…), but I’m part of my local community garden, which helps to mitigate food scarcity and improve neighbourhood resiliency and community. Tell me what you get up to, or hope to get up to in future!

Profiles of Pride: June 7th!  🏳️‍🌈Brianna Ghey🏳️‍🌈
Brianna Ghey was a 16-year-old transgender girl and a Year 11 pupil at Birchwood Community High School. Her parents described her as "a larger-than-life character who would leave a lasting impression on all that met her". According to her friends, Ghey would often help younger trans girls safely and legally access hormone replacement therapy. They also said she had faced years of transphobic harassment and bullying before she was killed, including at school, a part of which was being repeatedly "gang beaten".
In addition to being a student, Ghey was also a TikToker under the username @gingerpuppyx, with her number of followers variously reported as 11,000, 31,000 and 63,000. On TikTok, she was known for miming and dancing to popular songs. One of her final TikToks said that she was "excluded from school". After her death, her TikTok account was deleted.
On the afternoon of 11 February 2023, Ghey was found with multiple stab wounds on a path in Culcheth Linear Park by members of the public. Emergency services were called at 3:13 p.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A Home Office postmortem has been ordered to determine the cause of death. On 15 February 2023, prosecutor Leanne Gallagher said the attack on Ghey was "extremely brutal and punishing".
On 8 March 2023, an inquest into Ghey's death was opened at Warrington Coroner's Court, and subsequently adjourned until after the trial. A pre-inquest hearing is scheduled for 17 August 2023.
Ghey's funeral was held at St Elphin's Church, Warrington on 15 March 2023.
Ghey's death prompted responses from her family, local community, politicians, charities, activists, and musicians. Ghey's family said her death had "left a massive hole in our family". Emma Mills, headteacher of Birchwood Community High School said: "We are shocked and truly devastated to hear of the death of Brianna." A parent of one of Ghey's friends, speaking with the Daily Mail, alleged that the killing was a hate crime.
The Miami Herald reported that thousands in the LGBTQ community and users of social media were grieving over the stabbing death of Ghey. LGBTQ rights charity Stonewall and transgender youth charity Mermaids expressed sympathy for Ghey's family. Transgender community helplines reported large increases in calls soon after Ghey's death, with topics concerning "transphobia, gender identity and hate crimes".
A report by NBC News on the killing concluded that "the climate in the U.K. has grown increasingly hostile for trans people over the last few years", noting that the BBC had recently published the article "We're being pressured into sex by some trans women", which was accused of "[painting] all transgender women as sexual predators". American magazine Vogue connected the killing to online transphobia, writing that "there's a near-constant questioning of trans rights that reinforces the idea that trans men and women are trying to fool us, to trick us, that their deeply personal gender identity is an affront to the status quo and how we live."
A GoFundMe page for Brianna’s parents described Ghey as an “outgoing, confident girl” and added: “She brought a lot of laughter to those who knew her. She was looking forward to taking her exams this year and beginning her journey into the adult world.”

Selection from "Outing Heteronormativity: Nation, Citizen, Feminist Disruptions," Nivedita Menon, in Sexualities (Issues in Contemporary Indian Feminism), ed Nivedita Menon, 2007.
This selection talks about the impact of the AIDS epidemic on discussion of sexuality in India and the growth of a queer movement, as well as the drawbacks of this alignment.
Why the 1990s? From the late 1980s growing awareness about the AIDS epidemic made it increasingly legitimate to talk of sex outside the realms of law, demography and medicine--and not only as violence against women or in terms of 'population control'. Although AIDS is a disease which also fits into medical discourse, its source made sex itself speakable. For example, a highly political, left wing, non-funded ground supporting the rights of homosexuals, which filed a petition against Section 377 in 1992 [...] calls itself AIDS Bhedbhav Virodhi Andolan (Movement Against AIDS-based Discrimination), 'AIDS' in effect acting as code for homosexuality. Sex workers' unions such as Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee in Kolkata and Sampada Grameen Mahila Sanstha (SANGRAM) in Sangli, Maharashtra, both started as peer-education programmes distributing condoms as part of an HIV control project. They now function like trade unions, protecting their members in various ways, organising street demonstrations, initiating legal action against police violence, and standing up to local criminals (Misra, Mahal and Shah 2005).
International funding for HIV/AIDS prevention played a significant role in the creation of new NGOs dealing with sexuality, or added sexuality programmes in old ones.[3] Once such programmes were started and telephone helplines and safe spaces established, it opened the floodgates for political articulation of non-normative sexualities. Autonomous women's groups had since the late 1970s had discussions on sexuality, including lesbian sexuality and links with international women's groups. But AIDS awareness finally helped produce a critical mass of such an understanding in the public realm in India. It provided the opening and the monetary resources for public articulation of issues around sexuality, for workshops and meetings often providing startling new perspectives, bringing together people from all over the country and international participants, and for mobilisation of such politics at a country-wide level (Narrain and Bhan 2005; Deepa V.N. 2005; Rai Chowdhury 2005; Gupta 2005; Rege 1997a, 1997b; Sharma and Nath 2005). For example, when 'few faces tired of hiding behind the mask' in a small town in West Bengal decided to form a group in 2003, they were supported by several big AIDS-work related NGOs that received international funding (Rai Chowdhury 2005: 217-8). The Bangkok Conference of the Asian Lesbian network in 1990 brought Indian delegates face to face with their other Asian counterparts--'It was like looking into a mirror'. More significantly, that conference brought together lesbian feminists from different parts of India for the first time, leading to 'more focused activities back home' (Rege 1997a: 145).
Another factor that made sexuality visible in public spaces, both elite and non-elite, was the opening up of the media in the 1990s, as part of the liberalisation of the Indian economy. Sexually explicit and suggestive images from the West flowed in through private cable television channels, effecting a certain degree of banalisation of the hitherto unspeakable.
One is reminded of Foucault's interview, referred to in the Introduction, that urged us 'to recognise the indefiniteness of the struggle ...' (Foucault 1980: 56-7) Thus, while AIDS activism as it arose in the United States and other western countries was an intrinsic part of gay political activism and 'had to challenge traditional modes of empowering knowledge as well as traditional modes of authorising and legitimising power' (Halperin 1995:28), in India AIDS prevention is, in effect, the point at which disciplinary power and biopower's normalising techniques intersect. The official discourse of HIV/AIDS control and the funding generated by it is extremely state-centric, and is about new ways of regulating and controlling sexuality and the population as a whole. However, its effects are uncontrollable, and spill over into forms of radicalisation it could not have predicted nor desired. Swati Ghosh has addressed the emergence of the 'prostitute' as 'sex worker' in the context of HIV/AIDS discourse, as the point at which the sex workers is subjected to governmental technologies even as s/he emerges as Subject of other sets of political discourses (Ghosh 2004). At the same time AIDS discourse itself as well as funding imperatives can also tame radicalism and normalise once non-normative forms of sex, with new rules and regulations. ('Sex outside marriage/homosexual sex is okay as long as it is safe sex'). Counsellors and therapists now reserve for confessions of unprotected sex the guilt-inducement and opprobrium once reserved by priests for masturbation.[4] The focus on AIDS can be narrowly health-related and depoliticised. Sexual identities like kothi tend to get reified by NGOs whose continued funding depends on the numbers they have 'outreach' with, and competition for funding can splinter solidarity. Lawrence Cohen demonstrates in his textured account how NGOs compete for what he calls 'AIDS capital' and how terms like kothi get produced as a 'black box', an unquestioned and unquestionable fact (Cohen 2005).
Perhaps most disturbingly, the AIDS industrial complex with its big players, the multinational pharmaceutical companies, can be formidably anti-democratic. Vimochana, a feminist organisation in Bangalore that tried to initiate a discussion on material circulated by a Canadian feminist health group questioning dominant assumptions about the relationship between HIV and AIDS, found itself blocked, both by funders and other groups working on AIDS.[5] In non-party political circles in India this is rare, for every opinion, for better or worse, gets thrashed out, even if without resolution and however acrimoniously. The AIDS orthodoxy however, has proved impossible to breach, even at the level of raising questions. One does indeed have to recognise 'the indefiniteness of the struggle'.
The presence of large numbers of NGOs receiving funding for AIDS-related work makes it necessary to maintain a distinction between political practice that is self-consciously counter-hegemonic and the increasingly acceptable discourse about homosexuality produced by the former which is restricted to AIDS-prevention. And yet, it often happens that counter-hegemonic voices are able to tip the scales within a constellation produced by a range of ideas and circumstances external to themselves. Thus by 1998, when Deepa Mehta's film Fire depicting a sexual affair between sisters-in-law in a traditional Hindu household was attacked violently by the Hindu Right, there was a sufficiently self-aware community for the attack to act as a catalyst for public demonstrations in defence of freedom of expression and against homophobia, on the streets of Mumbai and Delhi and some other cities, of a size and visibility unknown before in India (John and Niranjana 1999; Kapur 2000; Patel 2002; Bachman 2002; Ghosh 2003b). These demonstrations brought together opponents of the Hindu Right, defenders of freedom of expression, human rights activists and gay and lesbian activists--of course, many or all of these categories overlapped.

I Want to Create Child Marriage Free Villages
In India’s southern state of Telangana, close to 27 per cent of girls get married between the ages of 15 and 19. A vast majority of these marriages take place in rural areas, predominantly among the most socially and economically disadvantaged communities.
This situation is all too familiar to 18-year-old Ragini* who has seen many teenage girls in her area being forced into child and early marriage by their parents. Ragini, however, is determined that she won’t keep quiet and will do something about it.
My father abandoned me soon after I was born. He wanted a boy. He didn’t want to take up the responsibility of raising a girl child. Barely able to make ends meet, he couldn’t face the prospect of any more hardship to raise money for my dowry in the future. He left my mother and I was brought up by her and my grandmother.
My birth was a result of arranged marriage between my parents. My mother was barely 18. She didn’t have any say in her own marriage that so dramatically changed her life.
I have grown up witnessing the extreme suffering my mother has endured in raising me all by herself – particularly in a society that places even less value on a woman abandoned by her husband. She works very hard as a manual labourer to earn just about enough for us to survive.
Her daily struggles serve as a strong reminder to me as to why girls should never be forced into marriage and why they must be given an education to stand on their own two feet.
When I was in class 8, I became aware that my friend and classmate was getting married – her parents arranged it for her. I was shocked and deeply upset for her. I reported the matter to my teachers who met with the girl’s parents but to no avail. The parents were adamant and strongly resisted anyone interfering into their private affair.
My teachers backed off, but I wasn’t prepared to let this injustice happen to my friend who was just a child. I mobilised about 10 girls in my class and reported the matter to the local authorities. With their intervention the child marriage was stopped. It made me realise that if girls raise their voice, things can change.
A year ago, I became part of Plan India Girls Advocacy Alliance project that’s working to end child marriage in my district and is empowering girls to realise their rights.
Being part of a movement that involves many other girls like me has boosted my confidence and strengthened my resolve to make a difference. I have learnt how I can advocate for girls’ rights, mobilise girls to stand up for themselves and influence those who can make things better for them.
With the knowledge and skills I have gained, I have now taken on the challenge to make as many villages child marriage free as possible. I speak to religious and community leaders, hold meetings with local government officials and regularly motivate girls and their parents to put an end to child marriage. Only when the society starts valuing girls equally to boys, real change will happen.
Tumblr media
It’s not easy to convince people to change their mindset. It takes a lot of effort. I am used to facing resistance from parents and community elders, but I don’t shy away from speaking my mind. If necessary, I remind them it’s illegal to get their daughters married off if they are under 18.
On the other hand, I tell girls about the help they can access if they are ever in that situation. They can call the helpline or even go the police. I strongly feel that people responsible for child marriage must not go unpunished. Slowly, the change is happening. It will take time, and I am not expecting miracles overnight.
I have completed my A levels and want to pursue a degree in commerce. I want to be a civil servant and pull myself and my mother out of poverty. Recently, my father made contact with us and visits us occasionally. Despite the extreme challenges of the past, I want to keep looking ahead.
Girls tell me that they feel inspired by me and think of me as a leader. I do feel proud of myself that despite all my personal struggles I never feel hopeless and beaten. On the contrary, I feel there is so much more I can achieve.

Valiant Business Solutions , a trusted travel company in Pune, understands the significance of travel insurance and offers insights into why it’s essential for travelers, especially those involved in corporate travel, domestic packages, and international packages. 1. Financial Protection for Unforeseen Events :
Travel insurance acts as a financial safety net when unexpected situations arise during your journey. Whether it’s a medical emergency, trip cancellation, or lost baggage, having a travel insurance policy ensures that you don’t bear the full financial burden of such events.

For corporate travelers, peace of mind is priceless. With corporate travel being a core part of many businesses, having travel insurance becomes a crucial aspect of employee welfare. 5. Safeguarding Your Investment :
When you invest in a travel package, you want to ensure that your money is well-spent. Travel insurance helps protect this investment by reimbursing you for non-refundable expenses in case you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason. This is the reason we are the safest travel agents in Pune.

Your health should be a top priority when you travel. With travel insurance, you’re covered for medical emergencies, ensuring that you receive the necessary care without worrying about the associated costs.

Day 8: Stressors and ED
I don’t matter.
I don’t matter if I am here or to work.
Those thoughts that I’ve had for years creep up. The depression that is waiting it’s turn for me to lose it finally shows up. And the PTSD is heightened as the new year is here. Of course, don’t forget the anxiety. That’s where things make an appearance. It’s like your favorite singer or that popular person who just enters down a grand staircase and everyone is in awe. Think Heathers: The Musical. That’s how the anxiety feels.
And why do I say that?
I am a person who works for most of my bosses who just uses me for money. And, what it feels like, will throw my position to the new teacher. And it probably was my fault for telling her I wasn’t a certified music teacher. But I didn’t feel comfortable teaching a whole bunch of kids like that. That’s a disservice to them. Group classes for piano, I can do that no problem.
“Why isn’t it the same as teaching regular kids?” Some kids want to be there for piano lessons. Some want to learn. When you have a big group, well I hope you enjoy it. Sincerely I hope you do. Because I don’t. I like 5 kids at max so I can focus on them and help enrich them to the best potential I can. Because I know they can.
I regret being a music teacher. I teach privately but I have to find contract work. And that’s where 4 schools have me as a contract worker (not all are horrible with the directors). Performing makes me so nervous, so that’s out. I’m not saying teaching is easy, but I should have rethought things. But maybe that’s because it felt impossible back in high school.
“So why can’t you go back to school?” I am dumber than bricks. I can’t do math at all. Science would be cool but that’s years to complete. Being a lawyer I would fail. I can never make it in the world now. Going back to school is near impossible. I barely have enough money to be safe. Summer is the worst part and trying to make it through the summer before you MIGHT get some money.
I will be working 7 days now. I have to. Which means there is that ED that is now prevalent even more. It already comes out when I’m stressed/anxious. I feel like hurting myself this time but that ended so well. Sswsse And I just figured that out this week. As I’m trying to type this, I remember that tomorrow I have a faculty meeting in a new school. And I don’t know how to feel about it. I can tell you my stomach is in knots and I feel like I’m going to be sick.
How pathetic. And all the food I had today, I feel the need not to. I made progress since Tuesday and now I’m back pedaling. And I don’t completely want too. But I would like to not feel shitty. And there’s the restrictive behavior but it’s also mental. I’m trying what my therapist said to do when I’m spiraling this week.
Where is it bothering you? Check other parts of the body? Neck, jaw because I clench, deep breath and focus where it’s going. Relax the shoulders. Remember to sit up don’t focus on the trigger. Just listen to the body.
And I guess that’s where I’m going to leave this tonight. Listen to your body. If needs to be fed and watered, so I’m going to do my best at the moment.
Good luck, lovelies.
