Have you ever looked at roses and wondered if they were tasty? (Or maybe you went to a restaurant with something like rose milk tea with rose jelly that you got & liked).
Well, here is a guide to eating roses.
(Please note that people tend to put all kinds of nasty chemicals on roses sold both commercially & that you find growing at a neighbor's house, so please make sure they are unsprayed/untreated/organic before consuming them and always ask permission if they are growing on someone else's land).
First, go early in the morning (as that lovely rose scent will disappear as the day heats up) & pick some just opening flowers. Then wash them to remove dirt and bugs.
These are some common domestic roses (Mr. Lincoln, Queen Elizabeth, etc), but if you are buying roses to eat, supposedly Damascus roses are the best. Next, you will gently remove the petals from the stem (a slight twist & pull is usually sufficient). Now you have to choose preparing fresh (rose jam, rose jelly, rose syrup, rose oil, rose water, etc) or drying them for later.
In this case, I dried them.
As you can see, once I had just over 2 quarts/2 liters, I proceeded to the next step. Grinding them to a fine powder in the blender.
As you can see, grinding the petals dramatically reduces the overall volume. For long term storage of the powder, I sift it (through a sieve) and dry again before storing it in glass jars.
This powder is really nice to have on hand. One spoonful into a cup of hot water or coffee makes a nice drink. Or you can add it to baked goods for rose flavor & color.
In this case, I am going to make waffles. I started with a commercial pancake mix, added ingredients suggested on the box and a good amount (no more than 1/10 the volume of mix/flour) of rose powder. After making the waffles, they looked like this:
I also had some rose syrup using a recipe from a really interesting cookbook about Lebanese pantry staples (which can be made from things that grow well in Mediterranean climates like roses).
The rose syrup was interesting to make as the pigments in the rose petals leach into boiling water, leaving clear, transparent, and slightly chewy petals behind. The book has lots of recipes for fresh rose petals. I water bath canned them for 15 minutes so I can store it long term. It was a two day process to make.
Then I combined the rose waffles with rose syrup to moisten them.
Finally, I used hot water to clean the blender & make my first batch of rose tea. I think the purple color is from my Mr. Lincoln rose.
So there is an entire meal from roses. (If you want a clear tea, use dried whole rose petals & strain them out before drinking).
I like to make a fresh mint simple syrup to sweeten my herbal teas and other warm beverages. When I want a sweet fruity taste this combination always hits the spot.
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
6 fresh sprigs of peppermint ( u could also use dried peppermint if u don't have fresh..about a teaspoon should do)
Zest from 1 med size orange(lemon will do also if your not a fan of orange.Honestly any fruit too.)
In a small saucepan combine the water and sugar.Heat it over a medium heat and let it simmer and stir occasionally until sugar dissolves. Now add your mint and zest.Bring your mixture to a boil then remove from heat and let it steep about 30 minutes.Strain it and chill it in fridge.Enjoy!

I got sick in time for the Halloween; I was pretty grumpy about it. That’s why I couldn’t do my usual shenanigans for the holiday, I had to quit all my pumpkin treats and carving and even getting the pumpkin, because I couldn’t move from the bed and was barely fixing myself some basic meals.
After two and a half days of being sick, I got tired of it. I’m not used to being sick for longer than 24 hours and I hate that covid weakened my immune system. I needed to get better faster, dammit. So, I remembered I still had some elderberry syrup from the last year. It was in the fridge for a long time, and it fermented a lot, to the point where it tasted alcoholic. I wasn’t sure if it still worked like it used to, and I decided to take some to see what happens.
You’re not supposed to take elderberry syrup when you’re already sick; the way it works is that it redirects energy from your body into your immune system, so if you’re very sick, your body is already using most of your energy to fight the virus, and if you direct more, you can deteriorate badly and your fever can get worse. But, I didn’t have a high fever anymore, I was just physically weak and had difficulty breathing, and my sinuses were clogged up. And, I felt if at this point I redirected more energy to my immune system, I would simply feel a bit worse and then get better faster. So, I grabbed that out-of-date, fermented elderberry syrup and just took a decent gulp and went to bed.
And wow did it work!! I deteriorated so fast, next time I tried to get up, I realized i could not stand up at all, it was like being in a high fever, though I didn’t have a way to check if I had one again. Have to give it to the elderberry syrup, fermenting in the fridge did not affect it’s medicinal abilities at all! It does work!
I wasn’t upset about getting worse, it was late evening already, and I simply went to bed. Woke up feeling way better than before, and the day afterwards I was okay to go to work again. 100% worth it. Felt like I was at least doing some kind of witchcraft for Halloween.
ACTUALLY, Juniper is my (only?) OC who can actually craft healing potions, and her cocktail is the goodberry, which is just a raspberry G&T, so-- if we assume handcrafted healing potions would have different recipes with different ingredients varying between makers, maybe june's has goodberries in it, which gives chambord a place in a theoretical healing potion shot thematically as well as just 'it's red' and 'I like it'
Easy Home remedies for cough and cold
It’s cough, cold and respiratory flu season there is no better time then now to learn how to make and use easy home remedies to ease symptoms and for a speedy recovery. Many people have long considered home remedies and herbal medicine as primitive and unnecessary because of modern science and technology. Modern medicine fails to address the fact that most…
I got around to making homemade bubble tea at home today. I’ve had a boba set for years that my parents bought me as a Christmas gift, but I was scared off from using it because it seemed like a lot of work and then I forgot I had the kit…
A month ago, I threw out the tapioca pearls that came with the kit (three years expired, lol), and bought some new ones to hopefully inspire myself to try it. Well, that day was today. And it was delicious!
