“We spoke a lot about his parentage. He’s sort of an orphan, and there are unhealed wounds that exist within him. Elrond is part-human, and his brother Elros, who chose to be human and eventually founded Númenor, were raised by their captor as children. I liked the showrunners’ ability to collaborate with that, because it became important to me that he’s an orphan and that he doesn’t belong here or there. I’d gained such passion for Eärendil and Elwing, Elrond’s parents, who appear in the Silmarillion, everything they’d achieved. It’s a lot to live up to for him!”

writing [love]; dream, a writer.
Tumblr media
Dream: I like writing. I like writing poems; I like writing songs; I like writing everything. I like storytelling—I just like storytelling. Storytelling in general is fun. I do a lot of storytelling through, like, my videos, through my video editing ... that's my favourite part of writing.

Dream: So, it's [love is] special, you know? You can't really explain it. Um, you know, with your mum, your dad, your—your sisters, your brothers, your cousins, your—your friends that you've known since you were a kid. Your friends that you just met a year ago that you are absolutely in love with as a person.

Dream: 'Have you written stories as well as songs lately?' Yeah—I mean, well ... I feel like songwriting is very—it's like, you just take stories—like 'Roadtrip' was, like, essentially a poem, and a story, that was turned into a song. And I feel like that's with a lot of stuff. 'Mask' is the same; 'Mask' was a poem turned into a song.

Amorousness: Prologue
Tumblr media
· November 2016 ·
120 SECONDS.
The harsh October wind causes goosebumps up my legs as the floodlights drown the stadium in brightness. The buzz of the crowd is electric as extra time ticks down. Miller to Henderson, the ball shoots along the wing, across to Bird, she makes to shoot.
60 SECONDS.
Gone from her feet, the ball is back on the move. Red, white, and yellow blurs across the pitch as the players move towards me.
45 SECONDS.
On the right. Over to the left. Straight down the middle.
20 SECONDS.
The balls in the air; flying, flying. Over to the right; I'm leaping. Flying, flying.
15 SECONDS.
Ball hits glove. It's powered back to the pitch. The next chip is made.
6 SECONDS.
Ball and gloves reunite. This time a catch.
3 SECONDS... 2 SECONDS... 1 SECOND...
The whistle blows.
The white noise of the crowd is immediately gone. Cheers, screams, and shouts echo across the pitch. My teammates bombard me. We've done it! Tears spring to my eyes, and I drop to my knees.
WE'VE DONE IT!
Sheffield United W.F.C. are the official 2016 Women's Super League 2 Champions!
All the emotions that flood my body as the whistle blows overwhelm me to the point my knees give out and tears begin streaming down my face. I feel pressure on my back as my teammates, my friends, begin my final dogpile of Sheffield United.
"WE DID IT! We did it! You did it! You absolute legend Brighty! What a save!" The shouts in my ears come from my football bestie, Avery Bird. With a breathy laugh, I bring myself back to reality. Continuing my laughter I spin onto my back, knocking the ball out of my hands, I tug Ave into my arms. "We just did that! What on earth? How? What?" My disbelief is expressed through my giggles as we squeal at each other before rolling apart.
Leaping to my feet, I go and hug all my teammates for the last time before we're herded in to collect our medals. After many hugs, handshakes, and trophy cheering we split off to celebrate with our families and friends off the pitch.
Tucking my gloves into the waistband of my shorts I'm tackled into my hardest hug of the night. Wrapping my arms up I breathe in the sweetness of my sister's perfume, the scent immediately easing my mind. "I am so, so proud of you Dottie! You're a star!"
Pulling away from each other I'm instantly brought into more arms. Mum pulls me into my biggest cuddle of the night and her sobs of pride encourage my glossy eyes to begin leaking again. "Oh, darling! I'm so proud of you baby, such an incredible save as well! You saved that game, well done hun!" With a kiss on my head, a tight bear grip joins the hug and I hear my dad's gruff voice, "amazing baby girl! Truly amazing! I'm so proud of you!"
The final family members to congratulate me are my big brother, Billie, and his fiancé, Beatrice. "You did good kid! Well done!" He grins while ruffling my hair, as Bea hands me a bouquet, all varying shades of red and white, a meaningful Sheffield tribute that earns her a one-armed hug.
Pulling back I send a punch to my older brother's arm before wiping my sleeve across my face to clear the tear tracks. "I cannot believe that was it," I breathe, "my final United game and I end with the ball in hand? How often does that happen to anyone!" My breathy disbelief quickly turns to overenthusiastic chatter.
"It was incredible Dots! The way you bounced back after the first dive as well! Incredible pace." Dad compliments. Millie and Billie began discussing the details of the game tossing compliments everywhere but before I can focus on the words they were saying I hear the call of my name.
"Brighty! Brighty!" "Come sign my shirt Ollie!" "Oh-Em-Gee! Ollie Bright! Oh my gosh! I can't believe it!" Spinning around I spot my oldest friend, Bodhi, with his curly blonde hair tucked away under a beanie, blue eyes gleaming bright, and my other best friend, Oakley, bright red hair whipping in the wind as they shout from the stands - obviously not daring to jump the barrier as my family had. Rolling my eyes and grinning brightly I wave and head over to the blockade to pull my two best friends into half hugs over the bar. "Shut up, you dingbats!" I chuckle.
"For real Olls! This'll be worth a LOT when you're on you're a Lioness, girl!" Bodhi hypes me up mockingly. "Shut up dude, I'm barely a league player yet!"
"You will be though! We all know it Dots!" Billie pops into the conversation, as my siblings join the group. "Nah, nah. That's all Mills!" I reply, reminding everyone of the pride I hold for my big sister's first Senior England cap earlier this year. "We'll be out there together one day Dottie, stop being so humble," the girl herself nudges me.
"Yeah, well this guy will be away surfing in the tropics by the time it comes around. Won't even make a game," I throw back, as I tease the younger boy. "Well, I'll be at every single one of them! Be all over your socials with all my pics, I will." Oakley, my photography-obsessed friend, jumps into the conversation. "I'll hold you to that ya know," I point at her as my dad's arm drops over my shoulder.
"Right, ready to head out?"
"And you're sure you've got everything, Dottie? Toothbrush? Football boots? PJ's?" Mum frets about, checking my belongings through all the car windows as she spoke to me, "oh! Mr Ted! You mustn't forget Mr Ted! Are you sure you have him?"
After our traditional post-match meal and catch up at our local pub, The White Knight. Friends and family gathered back at the Bright household as it was time for me to make my leave. Although I had already experienced my fair share of emotional goodbyes as Billie and Bea had to head out early to meet Bea's brother for birthday drinks.
"Yes, mum!" I sigh, "I promise I have everything! And anything I don't we can pick up when we're back for Christmas, all right?" I enforce, pulling her into a hug. "Oh darling," She sighs, a tear slipping down her cheek, "you'll call, won't you? Dad didn't get you that fancy phone as a leaving present for nothing." Emotions are high, with her youngest child leaving the nest it's understandable. "Yes, mum. I promise!"
"Leave off Nicki, she's a big girl and she's got Mills looking after her too remember!" Dad's gentle hand on mum's shoulder encourages her final tight squeeze before she pulls back. "You're right, you're right. Millie dear! You'll take good care of your sister, won't you?" Her volume dips as she moves to fret over her eldest child. That is Mum's best way to deal with her sadness, by worrying and caring for everyone else.
Being left with Dad we both shake our heads at her antics as we watch her walk away, "we'll all miss you Ottie-Dots. But we're so, so proud of everything you've achieved; everything we know you'll achieve." Looking up, his face has dropped from the last time I'd glanced at him. "Pops," I whisper with a frown, pulling him into a tight hug. "Oh baby girl, it's going to be so quiet around here without you," he frowns.
"Hey," I nudge him, "what happened to me being a big girl, ay?" I gain a chuckle as his eyes weep ever so slightly before he pulls away and wipes at them. "You'll enjoy the peace after dealing with your tornado child for 16 years," I add.
Nudging me back with a grin he jokes, "tornado child is certainly right! Within a week we'll be missing your god-awful shower karaoke and having to swat at you for sitting on the counters though." We laugh with each other before he nods across to where Bodhi, Oakley, and Ave are standing with their heads down, chatting in low tones, "you should go, say goodbye." With a slow nod, I agree and walk towards my little ragtag group of best friends.
"You guys plotting all the laughs you're gonna have now I'm leaving?" The sarcasm leaves me before I can control it as I join my group. Ave has tears silently streaming down her cheeks and shakes her head at me, despite being the oldest she's certainly the most emotional. "I can't even joke with you right now Olls, I can't believe I'm admitting to missing you," Bodhi speaks, as he raises his head and I see a storm in his, usually bright, blue eyes. "We love you so much Olls. It's not gonna be the same playing without you." Ave is the next to speak, latching herself onto my neck. Being the youngest on the team I was terrified of the idea of making friends, but at my first practice, Avery approached me with a smile and asked to be partners. Despite being two years older than me we immediately clicked and she never made me feel worse for being young. Never got jealous over the fact I'd signed for a bigger team either, not like some of the older women.
"We have something for you though," Oakley begins, "it's nothing much, you know we're all strapped for cash. But just so you don't forget us." A sob is brewing in her throat as she finishes and from the bag at her feet, she produces a scrapbook. ’Scruffy + his girls' scrawled across the front in, what is obviously, Bodhi's awful attempt at bubble writing. "Aww, guys! You didn't have to! Thank you! I'd never forget you guys though." I blink back my tears as I inspect the cover page and hug Oakley in thanks. My friendship with Oakley started in year 7 at Eckington Secondary. We were in the same form group and our surnames came next to each other on the register, Bright and Connell, we sat next to each other in every seating plan in every single class and quickly became joint at the hip after, bonding over our dislike of ketchup in history.
"Okay, my turn," Bodhi demands, snatching me close as I bury my face into his neck, trying to store his classic scent of sandalwood with a hint of coconut in my memories. Being neighbours since birth there have been very few days where I haven't been able to wander into the Strike's garden and climb the treehouse outside his window to ask if he wants to play football, trade Match Attax's or beg him to teach me to skateboard. But also, climb through and ask for a cuddle on a tough day, or rant out all my frustrations over a game of Fifa where he’d give surprisingly good advice. "You make me a promise Dots?" He mutters into my hair. "What?" I whisper. "Don't be lonely, yeah?" He pulls away, holding me at arms-length, "make some friends at your new school, on the team! Wherever you end up. Heck! Maybe get a boyfriend," he exasperates, "or girlfriend - if you swing that way?" He then adds with a cheeky wink, classic Bodhi.
"I promise I will not be a sad, lonely, slob Bodes," I joke, "but you know as well as anyone my love life is non-existent and very likely to stay that way." With a solemn nod and a flash of hurt in his eyes, he nods in realisation.
"I love you and I will miss you all, you're gonna get sick of how much I'm calling you," I announce as I back away from my friends and over to Millie.
"You ready to go kiddo?" She asks, pulling me into her side and glancing down at me. "As I'll ever be," I nod, before taking a step away and around the car. I pull my parents in for a final hug, telling each that I love and will miss them.
After my final goodbye, I climb into the car, pulling the seatbelt across my body. Millie also bids our parents goodbye and joins me in her car, turning on the engine, the heating and the radio she glances at me before reversing out of the drive. I wave to everyone standing under the streetlamps, even Bodhi's parents standing in their open doorway.
Glancing down at the scrapbook in my lap I finally let a tear fall, landing and dissolving into the blue card across the front.
"Chelsea, here we come."

The Old School House (1)
After I was born, I lived in an old school house - which when looking back was the inaugural ‘Galunacy’ project.  My parents purchased this huge derelict school building in a small village in Suffolk, it wasn’t a simple do-er upper, it was a complete project – a Galunacy Grand design, which required lots of planning permission, money and work.  But my dad was an electrician by trade, my mum was a keen amateur interior designer and it was a dream of theirs.
My first years were confined to one part of the house, that they had made home, while the rest of the build took place.  A giant living room which was the original school hall, with massive wooden windows and beams.  Of course, I don’t have many memories of this time, as I was a baby.  But I do have flashbacks of a gigantic, beautiful smelling Christmas tree together with their own real-life birds, which were accidentally taken home when dad had felled the said tree. A giant Flemish rabbit called Posey, who was magical in every way, and used to jump through dad’s newspaper to sit on his lap.  A very naughty dog called Jamie who have penchant for eating my cuddly toys and on a fateful day was taken by the gypsies (according to my parents) and I was devastated.  My brother, Giles was also born during this time - much to my excitement!
Eventually, as I grew up, the house started coming together and I got my own room.  This was the start of my memories, at the around the age of four.  By day, the house was brilliant – so much space to play, an outside school yard to ourselves, rabbits, fields and farms nearby to explore.  It was idyllic.  I had my own cubby hole to read books and that is what I spent a lot of my time doing, I was a book worm.
However, by night the house came alive, not a good alive, a malevolent alive which scared me to the sanctuary of my parents bed often.  I remember, it was the nights of wind and rain that used to terrify me the most.  I would lie in bed listening to the bell in the bell tower (why we kept it I never know) creaking with the wind, I have never heard a sound like it since. It never rang, just creaked.  And then the rain…the rain was the worst. The ceilings were wooden and the roof leaked, I used to watch as the water would seep into the wood and start to slowly spread in a line down the seam of the plank.  Turning the wood dark, it looked like blood – blood running down the ceiling towards me. I used to watch it come and pray hard that the spread would not reach me, but before it did, I would have scarpered already to the safety of my parents.
The heating consisted of an old aga and radiators which made strange noises, and there were rats which you could hear scratching around the eaves.  Apparently, my dad slept with a rifle under the bed and mum was terrified that he would shoot us accidentally on one of his late night rat shooting missions.
My parents tried to make it better, by creating a bed in the stars for me – where we put glow in the dark stars matching the constellations on the ceiling.  I was obsessed with the night sky and my telescope which I would watch the moon before going to bed was my prized possession.  But unfortunately, the bed in the stars  took me even closer to the ‘bleeding roof, so I am not sure it was quite the outcome they had hoped for.
Weirdly, at the same time, I remember being absolutely terrified that there would be a war and we would be bombed.  I wrote endlessly in my diaries about this, about losing my family and I feared death and being abandoned.  I never talked about it as I thought I was weird.   I look back and I wonder where these dark thoughts came from, and my overactive imagination.
Later, I found out that the school master who ran the school hung himself in the house and I often wonder whether that was part of it.  But maybe it was just an old house, that had stories to tell and I was a willing listener.

Stop Pretending (TFATWS)
Fandom: Marvel
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
Genre: Romance, Angst
Summary: The reader thinks she's doing a stellar job of keeping her feelings for a certain soldier buried deep inside. Turns out, all it takes is an observant new friend to begin the unraveling of her most precious secret (Spoilers for TFATWS)
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Word: Pretence
Definition: A way of acting that is intended to deceive people.
Example: Saying that he's just a friend when he's really the love of your life.
Your POV
Being caught in the midst of war is something that I, (Y/N) (Y/L/N)  know all too well. As a war vet, former shield agent, and now Avenger I'm used to being centered amongst conflict. When the fight begins within me though, a battle between what I want and what I think is right, how will I react? Will I listen to my heart, my head, or will the winner be chosen for me?
Delacroix, Louisiana.....
I love my sleep, always have, always will. It's not necessarily the comfort of the bed, the quiet or even the rest. It's the fact that I'm at peace when I sleep. My life has a tendency to fall apart when I'm awake, so anything that will put that off for as long as possible I savor.
I wish it were the same for a certain super soldier in my life. I look forward to going to bed, everything calms down then, and for most people it's the same. For Bucky however, it's when everything starts, the nightmares, the terrors, the seemingly unending darkness. If only I could take his pain away like he has with mine.
For the last few weeks, my life had, for want of a better word, been hectic. Hectic to say the least.
After the eventual defeat of Thanos and the loses we endured as a result, I thought naively that life might calm down a bit, that I'd have time to breathe, to live. How wrong I was.
It all began with John Walker being announced to the world as the new Captain America.
I was baking cookies with Morgan in the Stark family kitchen when it came over the radio. As that latest turn of events sunk in, my first thoughts were of Bucky, what that would do to him. Not even an hour later I had said my goodbyes and was on my way to help him get the shield back.
Since then even more had happened. We'd regrouped with Sam, busted Zemo out of prison which in turn ruffled the feathers of Ayo and the Dora Milaje. We came face to face with Morgenthou and the Flag Smashers, and finally witnessed the man who thought he could even compete with Steve, make himself judge, jury and most significantly executioner.
After that went around the world we knew we had to end it sooner rather than later. It couldn't get much worse than Captain America becoming a murderer. We got the shield back, which was a fight all in itself. Handed Zemo over to Ayo, to try and recompense for the distrust we'd instilled in the people who'd helped us so much. Then we travelled to stay with Sam and his family in Louisiana whilst we waited for Karli's next move.
This is where we found ourselves now, in the eye of it, the calm before the storm.
Waking up in the Wilson households guest room, I was greeted to the golden hue of the rising sun penetrating through the single glaze windows, and the melodic sounds of gulls on the hunt for their morning meal down by the docks.
Actually, no that's not right. What I could hear was most certainly not birds, and it was definitely not melodic. What were those boys doing?
Quickly and quietly I threw on the first clothes I could get my hands on and made my way downstairs towards the noise. What caught my attention when I discovered the source, was not the two youngest Wilson boys playing with our newly reacquired shield in the living room, but the super solider who was blissfully ignorant to it all, sleeping peacefully on the couch in front of them. I don't think I'd ever been so happy.
"Right you two, if you're determined to play Avengers all morning then I suggest you re-assemble in the back yard. You're gonna wake Bucky up," I whispered out in one breath, stepping between the boys, then placing my hands on their backs and tip toeing them towards the door.
"So what if we wake him up? It's gone 10am," Cass questioned in protest, pulling on his sneakers and jacket.
"Exactly! Which is why if you do as I say, I will make you the biggest plate of waffles for breakfast that you've ever seen."
The boys eyes lit up. "Can we have ice cream with it? Mum never lets us have ice cream for breakfast, and I'm sure there's a tub of Stark raving hazelnuts in the freezer," AJ clapped in muted excitement. "Oh, for God's sake.....Yes. You can have whatever you want if you get out of this house now and keep the noise down."
Once the boys were outside, I made my way over to the kitchen, stopping on the way to lean over my favourite senior citizen and make sure that he was still peaceful in his slumber. He'd never looked so relaxed, so at ease. It was a brand new Bucky I'd never seen before, a Bucky that had my heart pounding for him even more than it normally did. Not that he knew any of that.
Half an hour later and up to my elbows in waffle mix, I failed to notice my new friend and host Sarah making her way to my side at the counter, the huge smile on my face not going unnoticed. "What's got you grinning like the Cheshire cat, like I need to ask?"
"Bucky's sleeping. Isn't it amazing?" I spoke softly, bouncing up and down on my feet as I did so.
"And why is that?" She couldn't looked more confused if she tried.
"In all the years I've known him, I don't think I've ever woken up before he has. If his nightmares don't keep him awake all night, they normally have him up before the crack of dawn. I don't think I've ever seen him so still."
"Good answer," Sarah nodded in a hush, understanding why this meant so much to me, but not done yet with her morning interrogations, "Now on to my next question......"
"I'm already not liking the sound of this."
"Sleeping Beauty over there follows you around like a little puppy dog. He hangs on your every word, looks at you like you hung the stars or something. It's pretty obvious how crazy he is about you, so when are you gonna stop pretending that you're not head over heels in love with him?"
"I don't know what you're talking about Wilson," I smiled forcefully, making out like the waffle maker deserved my attention way more than the conversation I was being made to have.
This was all Sam's doing, without a shadow of a doubt. He'd tried to have this conversation with me on multiple occasions and I shut him down every time. He obviously hadn't given up like I thought he did, and decided to draft in his sister. He is seriously gonna regret it when I find him.
"Sure you know what I'm talking about. Sam sees it, I don't even know you that well and I see it. The only reason Bucky doesn't, is because he doesn't believe he could ever be that lucky. You're a smitten kitten." These Wilson's are all as annoying as each other.
Knowing I wasn't getting out of this one, I grabbed Sarah by the arm and pulled her right into the corner of the room, trying my best to keep this convo as private as possible. "Look, I'm not pretending.....I'm ignoring. There's a difference."
"Care to explain what that difference is?" Sarah spoke softly, but with a sarcastic air.
Turning to look over my shoulder at the subject of our conversation, making sure he was still safely in the land of nod, I decided to just be honest. Sarah was much like her brother. Once she wanted to get to the bottom of something she wasn't about to give up.
"I love Bucky, more than I've ever loved anyone...and that terrifies me," the rawness of finally being honest making my voice shake, and tears come to my eyes. "Nat was like my sister, and she's dead. Tony was the closest I've ever gotten to having a Dad...and he's dead too. Then there's Steve, Vision, God knows where Wanda is....Everyone I love, either leaves or dies. If I admit my feelings for Buck then I face the risk of losing him too."
"Do you have any idea how crazy you sound right now? He's not going to die because you love him (Y/N)."
Silent tears were falling now. I was revealing my deepest fears to a woman I'd only known a few days, and I'm not underplaying it when I say it was like a colossal weight off my chest, a release I didn't know I needed. "Believe me...I know, but I can't take that risk. I can't lose anyone else, especially not him."
"Let's just say for a second that you're right, that there is some higher power somewhere, set on destroying everyone you love. Do you really think ignoring your feelings is going to make them disappear?" I didn't know what to say to that. "Natasha and Stark died so that everyone could continue living, and (Y/N) you're not living as long as you keep this to yourself. They wouldn't want that for you."
"But what if I lose him?" I whispered with a choked sigh.
"Then at least he'll die knowing how you felt about him. After everything he's been through don't you think he deserves to know there's someone out there who loves him like you do?"
"Of course..."
Sarah's lips pulled upwards in a satisfied smirk, wrapping her arm around my shoulder and giving it a comforting squeeze, "then you owe it to yourself, and to him, to tell him the truth."
"Why do all you Wilson's have to be so clever?" I voiced in mock irritation, pushing her away from me and acting like I was annoyed she had gotten one up on me.
"I don't know," she thought aloud and with a cheeky grin, grabbing a plate to start piling on the long forgotten waffles, "I think it might be the sea air or something."
"Nah, it's in the genes," I chuckled quietly, grabbing my jacket and deciding it was time to get this conversation wrapped up. "I'll go find Sam and the boys for breakfast. Clear my head a little bit."
"You promise you're gonna tell him?" Sarah stopped me as I went to push the door open.
"I'll think about it."
3rd person POV
Once (Y/N) was out of ear shot, Sarah couldn't help but start jumping up and down in excitement, clapping her hands loudly as she did so. That went even better than she thought it would, and she was so proud of herself. Sarah Wilson could now add matchmaker to her resume.
"Coast is clear Barnes. You can open your eyes now."
(Y/N) had no idea what she had metaphorically walked into just minutes earlier, entering that very revealing conversation with her overly inquisitive host.
What drew Sarah to come down that morning was the sounds of both the front porch door opening and the smell of homemade waffles wafting up the stairs. As she entered the kitchen she was met with two sights. One being (Y/N), facing the counter and looking very smiley, the other being a wide awake super soldier who was just laying on the couch and staring at her, the sole object of his affection. Sarah could work with this.
Every time (Y/N) turned back in his direction, Bucky would close his eyes and pretend to be asleep again. He had never slept so soundly, so peacefully, thoughts of (Y/N) and his new friends filling his nightmare free dreams.
He'd initially woken to (Y/N) ushering the boys outside because she was afraid they would wake him up. He didn't want to disappoint her by proving her right. Besides, he liked just watching her move around the kitchen, completely unaware he was observing her the whole time. He had no idea about the conversation that was just about to happen.
After (Y/N) had left and Sarah had confirmed so, Bucky sat himself up, his body shaking with adrenaline and a look of complete shock fixed on his face. Had he definitely woken up, or had the whole thing been a part of his dream? Did (Y/N) seriously just admit that she was in love with him?
Bucky didn't know how to react, didn't know what to say as he looked up at a smug Sarah from his spot. All he'd ever wanted was for (Y/N) to feel the same way about him as he did about her. Now he knew that she did.
"You're welcome by the way."

When Kaz comes to confront them in front of the Crows why you came back all bloodied and carrying back a body, they know this isn’t going to end well…
Tumblr media
Death clung to you. That's what people muttered in the streets of Ketterdam, 'if the Blackbird is on a strike don't go outside for a week and remember, pray to the saint who wears the most colour.'
Great bedtime stories for children.
Your legend would never end, though it must have begun somewhere. Someone who you decided could witness one of your killings must have made up a story. Started it up and told it in fright to someone and the people not believing a word they say. Before their dead of course. And then it spreads like the plague.
The Blackbird was once a hopeful girl, full of dreams and happiness. She had beautiful feathers of all different kinds of colours, and they sang to the heavens and it was as if she was a child of the saints. Then one day - the bird that brought kindness and sunshine to everyone's lives fell into a trap.
There was a hyena that people all thought was bad news but she thought she could help him become a better person.
The little birdy was wrong.
He hurt the bird of colours so badly that one day he burned her feathers and they became pitch black. The hyena thought that he had won at last and had gotten power over the bird.
It was said that she ran and escaped the terrible beast that day. And because he had changed her to the very soul she wasn't the same anymore, no. She was only used for revenge, and it was said she turned her backs on the saints for not saving her. When the saints did decide to intervene the little bird was shattered and could no longer sing. Her voice reduced to a vengeful whip, it was no longer beautiful but fearsome.
It was said that on that night the Blackbird used her wings on Ketterdam so she could cover the sky in darkness so the stars in the sky, the only things the saints could use to watch over mankind was blindfolded in a merciless fog.
And there the Blackbird was born.
Maybe death clung to you, but not the same way that trauma and the cruelness of the world does.
And that's a fate worse than death.
You remember strike one, you and Jesper were kids - happy kids. And the neighbour's son of was considerably older than both of you offered to babysit the one time your Da, and Ma was out.
Jesper was playing in the back, perhaps practicing shooting so he could impress your Mum but you stayed inside saying something along the lines that you wanted to cook some cookies for Dad.
How you wished you hadn't.
That teenage boy had put his filthy little hands on you. He left you in the kitchen tears running down your face and bile that you had to force back down your throat.
Your mother had found you like that and she instantly knew what had happened and she made everything much more bearable. When you had nightmares you would get up and knock on her door quietly enough for her just to hear and because your Ma was a light sleeper but your Da was not, she would get up and see you alright.
The poor woman never told her husband because you had pleaded with her not to. She always did blame herself and she made sure the boy never came around again but she did thank the saints that he didn't go all the way.
She wasn't sunshine, (she always said that was you!) No, she was the faint moonlight in the distance that helped guide you on your way home.
Then she died.
Strike two, was your mother dying. You remember that day where she went to take the poison out of that child and when she did she sucked it back into herself. In your arms was the last place your Ma took her last breath.
That was the day the world had lost its guide home and it always seemed to be in peril after that.
Strike three came almost immediately after strike two. Your father wouldn't talk to you. You became a ghost in your own house, you understood your father though,
she did die in your arms.
Jesper was the only one that didn't make strike three the last strike where the rope was at its point and snapped. He was your armour against the world, with his funny quirks and quips. He was the older brother you needed in those moments.
But armour slowly breaks over time and your dear brother wasn't getting enough out of life at the farm. So when your Father sent Jesper to Ketterdam you went right with him.
You attended college for a bit but eventually, your armour had finally left you. It broke under the stress of everything in his life that he couldn't keep up with yours.
So you meant him.
He was kind but knew when the world was being too cruel. He was wealthy, but not rich. He was sweet, but not puke up rainbows kind of way. He knew you like the back of his hand and always knew how to comfort you. Jesper had actually meant him once before he got too busy with the Dregs and said maybe he knew you too well.
You yelled at him at the time and said that was absurd! He would never do anything to hurt you!
Strike four was falling under his spell.
Strike five was when he told you terrible things about yourself and you thought he was always right. He could do no wrong in your eyes.
Strike six was when he finally started beating you and you had just expected it at this point.
Strike seven was when you weren't allowed to go to school anymore.
Strike eight was when he wouldn't let you see anyone, not even your brother. But you never questioned it, he was basically a saint to you, why would you? Besides Jesper never seemed to have time for you anyways.
Strike nine was when he cheated on you and told you you had to be better.
Strike ten was when he started raping you.
Then one day he was worse than usual and you grabbed the hot poker from the fire pit, that he had used to beat you before, and you had told him to stay away.
Then you ran.
It was the straw the broke the camel's back, it was the saints giving up on him or maybe it was the saints giving up on you.
You didn't care, you were free.
You made one promise that day, that you would never love again.
You learned quickly what Ketterdam was like even before you had meant him, so perhaps that was why it was so easy to become the Blackbird. The girl who never smiled, the girl who only lived only for revenge. The monster that will wipe your existence off of the earth like it was nothing. The ghost that will haunt you when your sins line up too high.
Eventually, you joined the dregs and you connected with your brother once again and he knew something was wrong the moment he felt your presence. He didn't believe you were the Blackbird, the girl who terrorized the streets of Ketterdam.
But he learned to accept it, they all did except for that blasted Brekker boy.
With your time in the Dregs, you had slowly begun to form something with Kaz but you quickly remembered your promise to yourself and you let him go.
Although you don't like to admit it, the Crows had become your friends - family even. You would do anything to protect them even though it didn't seem like it. You were you though, and that was being afraid to even semi-connect with them. Of course, you were, because you were growing a bit too fond of Kaz Brekker and last time that lead you to a fate worse than death.
So you distanced yourself for a while to recollect your thoughts and if you really wanted to stay with them. Did they ever manipulate you? No. Then you came back and you stayed, maybe you weren't the perfect friend or a very good one at all but the Crows knew you even considering to stay was a blessing all in itself.
They were always so patient with you even Kaz, especially Kaz, and you never gave anything in return to them. Guilt would often cloud your mind when you were near them but they were always so amazing something you could never be.
But one day they came to their breaking point.
Killing people wasn't anything new for them, much less you killing people but coming back with a bloodied body and losing contact with them for weeks was probably not the same as just 'killing.'
Jesper pulls you by your bicep into Kaz's office with the other Crows following behind. You stumble in as Kaz slams the door shut being the last one in the room. They stare at you with beady eyes almost like the ones on the infamous birds around the Slat.
"What the fuck Y/n!" Jesper finally yells. Everyone around doesn't even bother to tell him to lower his voice their faces held the same anger that Jes's did.
Silence drowns you in its ocean keeping you in its waters. A chain is wrapped around your throat as you sink deeper and deeper into its depths. You try and swim away, run like you always had before, but the weight around your neck is too heavy, too dense and it slowly drowns you.
You just shrugged your shoulders. How could you explain all that you went through? Why would you want to?
"We can't just brush this off Y/n, we always do, but you crossed a line," Wylan states calmly but firmly at the same time putting a hand on his boyfriend's shoulder trying to ease the tension in the room.
You laugh, you hadn't even been walking a line at all. No, you had been jumping from rooftop to rooftop as they created a chalk line at how far you could go. Balling your hands into fits you snarl, they have been keeping you back. Maybe it's a good thing but you didn't want to admit it.
What about Kaz? A voice whispers in the back of your head.
Your eyes travel to his form in the back. He's leaning on the wall slightly but also using his cane to make himself look up-right. The darkness in the back compliments his angular features making them stand out as if saying he was above you. And to most people he probably was and he deserved that position.
But it didn't matter to you, he was just Kaz to you. Even if you saw him as someone... Important in your life, nevertheless he didn't matter. He was just another powerful man drawing a line that you couldn't cross as the line became smaller and smaller till you were trapped against a wall with nowhere to go.
When you first became the Blackbird, you climbed up that wall, you knew what was going to happen next. And you would never let anyone do that to you again.
"If you think I crossed the 'line' then your wrong." Your voice started out light-hearted (never does a fake smile crawl on your face though) but slowly became menacing and terrifying.
You spin of your heels turning to Jesper. "You've kept me in a cage giving me freedom but always locking me back up in the night."
You turn to Wylan and you mock his voice from earlier. "It was only a matter of time before I would break out." Your eyes lock onto Kaz's and your voice softens while you look at him.
"You knew it was going to happen sooner rather than later. A bird needs to stretch its wings somehow."
"That doesn't mean you get to cut off communication with us for weeks than bringing in a body all bloodied. What you said before doesn't even explain why you did that Y/n," Inej says quietly.
You growl and the people closest to you jump back a little.
"Oh, what are you going to do, kick me out? Half of your businesses wouldn't have even succeeded without me!"
Jesper balls his hands into fists. "Gee for fuck's sake Y/n would just tell us!"
"HE'S THE REASON I'M A MONSTER!"
Your shout makes everyone freeze in their place and there it is again. The overbearing silence that takes over everything with its darkness. Running threw out the room, swirling around you and making it impossible for you to even hear anything other than your own terrible thoughts of madness.
But one voice isn't in your head of that hyena howling at you no, it's real and you can hear it among the darkness. You close your eyes listening in and hearing something other than darkness.
"Y/n." Your eyes snap open and you meet Kaz's eyes and you feel something dangerously close to relief.
"Everyone else out."
The Crows file out of the room one by one following Kaz's order. Everyone leaves but Jesper hesitates at the door and you see your broken armour trying to come back to you again and although it's harsh he wasn't there when he should have been. You understood that he had other problems he needed to sort out but you were his little sister.
You were supposed to stick up for each other.
"Out." Your voice would sound cold to anyone else but to Jesper, it sounds tired and unhappy. Lonely also however it has a hit of love and revenge as well.
The taller brother just sighs though and close's the door.
Kaz's eyes meet yours and your hands start to fidget with the cuffs of your bloodied shirt.
He doesn't say anything, he just stares at you. Willing you to spill information with just a glance. Any God would fall prey to those eyes and they would disclose all their knowledge while also thanking him in the end.
Kaz Brekker had something more powerful than Godly power over you.
So you couldn't help but tell him the real more dark story behind the Blackbird, he had already told you his so maybe, just maybe you could trust him.
"Do you know the Story of the Blackbird?" Your voice rings out against the muteness of the room fighting against it for once in your miserable life.
Kaz nods his head showing you that he knew. Of course, he knew it, was Brekker he probably knows every single version by heart.
"And I assume you know it's about me?"
Rolling his eyes but nodding once again.
You hesitate, knowing that after this you couldn't go back. That these next few words could change everything and why are you even telling this to the bastard of the barrel?
Because you love him.
It's simple and you promised yourself you would never love again but possibly that promise wasn't real because perhaps you never really loved that hyena. Some form of peace has definitely come from killing him, but maybe there's more to moving on from trauma than just revenge.
So with those thoughts in mind, the words tumble out of your mouth and you wouldn't be able to stop them even if you tried.
"Around the time where Jesper was just starting in the Dregs I had gotten a boyfriend. He was... Well, he was the perfect boyfriend but looking back he was too perfect. Basically fake, he was a manipulator and he knew me like the back of his hand. He knew where to press and I was under the impression that he could do nothing wrong." You pause to take a breath but you don't look up from your spot on the floor.
"It started with the small things like little insults thrown my way, but then it grew into bigger things like calling me a slut and what not. I wasn't even surprised when he started beating me."
Your eyes slowly come off the floor and they travel up Kaz's body but never meeting his eyes. You didn't want to see the disappointment that would be held in those eyes. That was inevitable.
"Then every day it started to get worse till he-" You cut yourself off and your legs wobble underneath you and as you collapsed Kaz jetted out and caught you before you could fall.
Tears were running down your face as you gripped Kaz's shirt as he picked you up bridal style and carried you over to the bed. He place's you down and slides in beside you yet there was a good distance between the two of you. But it still gave you comfort and for the first time in a while, you didn't question why it did, you just went with it already knowing the reason why.
You loved him it was as simple as that.
"Then he-" You choked on a sob again and you bring your knees to your chest.
"You don't have to say it." He says gently nothing like what that hyena used to do to you.
"Noah used to rape me." The words come out in a blur and the tight feeling in your chest slowly falls apart and for the first time in a while, you truly feel like a Blackbird - free. Stuttering to breathe in a realization comes to your mind; Noah that monster will never hurt you ever again.
"Oh, my Saints! He's dead!" You cover your mouth with your hand and you lean back onto the headboard tears of happiness smear down your face. You don't laugh though but you feel even clearer than before. You could get used to this feeling.
Slowly you look over to Kaz and you realize the two of you were broken souls beyond repair and maybe just maybe that's what you needed. Perhaps that's what you both need, each other.
"Thank you." You whisper and the ends of Kaz's mouth curl's up a bit into what looks like is almost a smile but not quite. You would get there too one day.
===========TIME SKIP 4 Months======================
You jump from the rooftop gliding through the air and landing on the window sill of Kaz's office. You tilt your head to the side affectionately as you see The Crows getting ready for a heist only they're really just fooling around. Everyone but Kaz of course, he's in his desk chair drawing out some maps.
And they tell you you overwork! Hypocrites.
You open the window silently and you slip into the room unnoticed. You tiptoe over to Kaz's desk and you leap on top.
Kaz raises his eyebrow at you and you just shrug your shoulders, he probably had to stop anyways.
"You know there are other ways to get my attention other than acting like a child?"
"Oh, I know this is just more effective." You playfully respond.
Before Kaz could continue with the banter Jesper interject's just realizing you were here grabbing everyone's attention and placing it on you. Still not a fan of that.
"How the hell did you get from that rooftop to that window!" Jesper points outside in a slightly worried, big brother voice.
So you look him dead in the eyes and say; "I flew."
Jesper laughs along with the rest of The Crows but they stop at your deadpan look on your face.
"You didn't really?!"
"No, I didn't." You roll your eyes, "I didn't even think you knew that I did that."
Jesper comes over and wraps an arm around your shoulders and you immediately tense up.
"I do know some tricks! I am your older brother after all." His tone does get a few octaves of sombre at the end remembering the memories of how he didn't protect you before. But he's here now so you guess that's all matter's now.
You scoot off the desk out of his arm range but you do send him a sorry glance. The memories were just too much to handle sometimes. He just sends me a tiny knowing smile and nods and walk's off quietly (for the first time in his life) over to Wylan.
You watch everyone interact and it almost brings a smile to your face but something is missing and you wonder what it is.
Your question is quickly answered though as Kaz stands up beside you. His ungloved hand slowly garb's onto yours's and slowly you intertwine your fingers together.
"You really are the leader of a bunch of idiots." You say as Nina dares your brother to down a whole bucket paint.
"Yes, that's what it seems."
"But we love them." And for the first time in a while, you smile and it's not full-blown, it's tiny yet it has the whole galaxy in there.
"Yes, Yes I do." But Kaz isn't looking at The Crows he's looking at you.

Word Count: 1950
Warning: Grief
A/N Awwww I didn't want to do this ending but I knew it was needed.

If your willing and would like to help I am going to edit now so can you comment of the Chapter that you think need the most immediate correction? Which one did you think was weakest?
Which chapter was your favorite?
Epilogue
The Sun was dipping over the garden, the sky was streaked with pinks, reds and deep hues of purple. It had been a full day of laughter and joy, as the estate's families had all returned to celebrate Julia's 98th Birthday. That morning Geralt had bathed his beloved in kisses and cuddles before helping her bathe. She had dressed in her favourite dress the Royal teal satin dress that she had cherished for many years, it was slightly too big for her now thinning frame but it still lit up her face whenever she wore it.
Geralt had settled her in her garden on a special day bed that Tobias had made for her so that she could enjoy the sunshine and watch the children play. Today there were many children running around the garden playing hid and seek and running underfoot of the Adults who were eagerly catching up after some time apart. Jaskier sat to their right playing beautiful tunes on his lute. Jaskier finished his song his face wrinkled which reflected in the warble of his voice as he spoke to Julia "Ahh the good old days, adventures and romance, monsters and money" Geralt growled low as Julia laughed "You didn't go on any of those adventures Jask you were too busy playing with the children"
Laughter rang out from her lips as Jaskier pouted and then smiled a devious smile as he began to strum "Toss a Coin...." Even before he could finish the sentence Geralt gave him a look that silenced the old man. "No fair Geralt, I need to revel in my youth. You still look that same as you did when we first met and Julia and I, well we've seen better days." Putting a soft wrinkled hand on Jaskier arm Julia smiled and said "It's ok Jask, why don't you play me Caleb's favourite lullaby. I always loved that song" a gentle sweet smile formed on Jaskier's face as he began to play a gentle lullaby that almost succeeded in taking Julia away into slumber.
As the morning's festivities moved into lunch and then Mid-afternoon a large cake was bought out for Julia. Large enough to accommodate the myriad of candles adorning the top, she asked the children to gather around and help her blow them out. Geralt loved how much she enjoyed her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He knew however that today she would not have had the breath to blow out one candle let alone 98. He sat behind her as she lay comfortably against his chest, their familiar position as the procession of Gifts were paraded before her. First came Tobias and Renee who both looked remarkably young for being in their late 60's easily mistaken for being in there 40's. Followed by Wilfred and his family and their children and Amelia and her family and their children.
As they moved forward Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert and Cohen bowed low before her Julia the only one looking even remotely as old as Julia was now was Vesemir his frame slightly bent and eyes watery but he looked in his mid 80's rather than the possible 600yrs that he was. The brothers blew her a kiss each and they moved along to allow Visenna and Yennefer a chance to present there good wishes presenting the only Gift Julia would agree to accept today a small bottle of her favourite Honeysuckle oil.
As each servant presented before her Julia remembered her cherished ones those who had passed on ahead of her Nessie her beloved cook who had become a cherished friend. Ruth and Hannah who had died in an outbreak of the pox 20 years earlier along with Jolnar and Petra. She had done all she could for them and it still it haunted her knowing she could not save them.
As the last couple walked near, she recognised both the beautiful lady standing before her and her handsome son standing taller than his father broad shoulders carrying their youngest child. No longer a teenage girl but a regale Queen, Cirilla had rightfully taken her place as the Queen of Cintra along with her husband Caleb beside her. She and her children now ruled the lands of Cintra and had enjoyed peace for many years. Ciri and Caleb kneeled before Julia and took her wrinkled hands in theirs. There eye's meeting, Ciri's full of unshed tears as she kissed Julia on her hand whispering "Happy Birthday Mother, I love you" handing their youngest to Jasker who was happy to cuddle with his nephew Caleb leaned forward and embraced his mother. His deep baritone voice whispered "You're looking well today mum, has dad been looking after you?" the cheeky glint in his eye speaking to how well he knows his parents the even after all these years their passion for each other had never wavered.
Now Geralt had Julia wrapped up in his arms in their favourite place, a blanket sitting over their bodies snuggling on the day bed in the healing rooms looking out over the place where so much love and warmth was met today. As the stars began appearing Geralt whispered to Julia "did you enjoy today my love?" he could hear her gentle soft breathing as she nestled further into his arms "Yes, it was so good to see everyone. This place seems so quiet when they are off living their lives" Geralt hummed in agreement as he ran his fingers through her hair now just as white as his own. They stayed that way for quite some time just enjoying the stars and each other's warmth until Geralt felt something change. It was an imperceptible shift in the way Julia was breathing he looked down at her, as their eyes met. Her pale now milky blue eyes smiled as she said "Take care of them my love" and with that she breathed one last breath and was gone.
He had known it was coming, they had prepared for this moment since Julia had started to feel her strength decline, but it didn't make the feeling of loss any less. Rather than moving Geralt relaxed into the day bed content to hold his beloved in his arms for just one more night.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Visenna placed a hand on Geralt's shoulder, she had found him sitting on the day bed looking out at the stars. Thankfully the family had been still in town allowing for a funeral to take place before they all went their separate ways.
At the contact of her hand on his shoulder she sat as he turned, and her son curled into her sobbing. No matter how much they had planned for this, talked about this she knew he would feel the grief and loss for many years to come. She was just glad she could be here to comfort him, to walk it thought with him. She knew he would be ok, that the love of their large family would help him remember the good times. To remember the love that Julia had shown to so many, and to celebrate the life that they had together. Still right now it was raw, and he needed to be allowed to grief so she did what she could she held her son and let him cry.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been a few months since Julia had passed and Geralt was only just beginning to start to feel more that just the loss. He had woken in his empty bed his arms aching to hold her again. Just wanting to feel close to her he went out to the stables and saddled Roach. The chestnut mare had been a present to him from Julia after Rose had passed away. They had clicked straight away, and roach had been a faithful companion. Today he knew where he needed to go, to their special place. Getting into the saddle he urged Roach into a gallop as they flew over the hills, past the Witcher keep that now rose up to the east of the main dwelling, past the orchards and finally to the river. He had pushed Roach fast needing to feel the wind and adrenaline through his veins.
Here, he found their favourite place, the watering hole had not changed too much since that day he had proposed to her. The trees were still strong and created the sound of waves as the wind rustled the leaves. The birds had come and gone, and now new generations occupied their branches. Even the ant's nests continued their cycle completely unperturbed by the destruction of their colony all those years ago when he had landed his beloved directly on top of their home.
Sitting down on the same bank he shut his eyes, picturing her face he spoke "We miss you Julia, I miss you. Your smile and your hugs. I miss your constant prattle about the grandchildren, and your worry about their safety. I wish you could have lived as long as I did, and that I wouldn't have to live without you" He opened his eyes looking at the water, he realised the biggest thing he missed was the peace that she exuded. Even in her worry she was peaceful.
As he sat a voice seemed to carry on the wind from long ago, her voice as it recited "The lord is my Shepard I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." As the words swirled around his mind a peace settled in his heart. It wasn't just Julia that he had missed is was the presence of her unnamed God that seemed to follow her wherever she was that he missed.
Speaking to the wind his deep voice carrying around the river he said "I know you, I watched you work through Julia's hand, her compassion, her heart for her family for her patients for me. I saw you work your miracle to bring us the child she so longed to have. If she's with you I want to be there too. I have never believed in higher beings, help me find you. I want to know you like she did" With that a peace greater than he had ever felt before wrapped itself around his heart. In that moment he knew without a shadow of doubt that he would continue to protect and love the family he had on this earth, and that he would one day see Julia again. Filled with a renewed strength and peace he went to Roach mounted and set off for home.

Burning Bridges pt. 4
Neville Longbottom x Reader
Summary: The halfway mark of the school year had finally come, a milestone in (Y/N)’s journey as a Hogwarts Professor. Winter break was rather uneventful, but at least the joyous idea of a dear friend’s wedding could help them out, right?
Word Count: 4.1k
Warnings: Swearing, just a bit
A/N: AH! Yeah. That’s all I gotta say about this chapter. Wow. Neville and (Y/N) are dumb dumbs, huh?
Part 1 ... Part 2 ... Part 3 ... Part 5 ... Part 6 ... Part 7
__
Snow had finally touched the ground, blanketing the castle in pure white brilliance. Christmas had come and went, winter break finally had come to an end. Students were running around like mad, trying to finish their assignments, papers and the like that were due for their return.
Neville sat in the greenhouse, opting to stay at the castle for the holidays, only leaving a few times to meet with his grandmother and visit his parents. A yearly tradition. He still had to take care of his plants. He hadn’t seen (Y/N) in the few weeks of break, knowing she must’ve gone to visit her mum in Bristol or the like.
“Come on,” Neville purred, his dragon-hide gloves running against the leaves of a moving plant. “I know you’re angry, but please just work with me here,” he sighed, seemingly giving up on the plant.
“Neville?” a voice called from behind the glass of the greenhouse. He looked up, a window had been open. He saw her, (Y/N), standing in the open window. “Nev!” her face twisted into a grin, rushing away from the window and running through the door.
“(Y/N),” Neville smiled, watching the young professor enter his workspace. “Good to see you.”
“It’s good to see you too,” she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, the hair completely down, no bow in sight. “Venomous Tentacula,” she stopped, hesitant to get closer to Neville or the plant.
“You remember your plants,” Neville said, adjusting his gloves.
“I had a good tutor,” said (Y/N), sitting on an empty patch of countertop, eyeing the plant carefully.
“You’re bright enough, I’m sure you could’ve gotten it without my help,” said Neville, recalling the various hours he had spent with (Y/N) studying for their N.E.W.T-level Herbology class. Madam Pince grew rather annoyed with their idle chatter in the library, usually not pertaining to Herbology.
“There were times on the road that I could’ve used your help,” (Y/N) shrugged. “One time, it took me the better part of an hour to tell the difference between normal ivy and poison ivy.”
“How did you say you landed your last job?” Neville teased, turning back to his tentacula, carefully moving branches. “Seems like it was more suited for a herbologist.”
“At times, sure,” (Y/N) admitted. “I lied in the interview about my herbology skills, you know better than anyone that everything I touch dies,” she laughed, fingers swirling in the excess dirt. “But, I was so desperate to work for such an accomplished potioneer I would’ve done much worse to get the job.”
“You gathered potion ingredients, right?” he asked, waiting for a response. (Y/N) rarely talked about her pervious job before working at Hogwarts.
“Yeah,” she hummed. “I enjoyed it once I got the hang of it, gathering odd plants, finding rare creatures,” (Y/N) sighed blissfully. “Traveling the world just to find the one ingredient that no witch or wizard had ever thought to use in a potion before,” her eyes lit up like the stars, full of wonder.
“Did you? Find that one ingredient?”
She shook her head, smiling sadly. “No, but I got to travel and be on my own for months at a time. It was terribly therapeutic.”
“Wasn’t it lonely?” Neville asked, trimming excess leafs off of the plant. “Being alone for that time?”
“Of course, I’m not an animal,” (Y/N) said, swinging her legs back and forth like a child. “I had Edgar, though. He’s been by my side since fourth year, he’s the person who knows me best.”
“He’s an owl,” Neville stated, giving (Y/N) a pointed look.
“I’m convinced he’s my soulmate,” (Y/N) quipped, pursing her lips gently. “He knows just how to cheer me up when I’m down.”
“Send me an invite when the two of you get married,” Neville laughed, decidedly finished with the plant. “Speaking of…” he paused. “I know you’re planning on going to Harry and Ginny’s wedding, I-I am too, so I was wondering—”
“Oh right! Gin and Harry’s wedding!” (Y/N) ran a hand through her hair, a habit she recently picked up. “I nearly forgot!”
Neville felt relieved to hear her slip of the mind. Why did he feel so relieved? “It’s next week,” he laughed.
“Damn, I knew I was forgetting something all break. I told my mum about this nagging feeling I had in the back of my mind when I was visiting her, but she said it was just ‘professor brain’, whatever that is,” she chuckled. “Lance tried to convince me that she was right, but I disagree.”
“Lance?”
“Oh!” (Y/N) looked up at Neville. “I totally forgot to tell you! I listened to your advice.”
“Advice?”
“Yeah, when we had tea for the first time? You told me ask out Professor Knight,” (Y/N) smirked. “We’ve been seeing each other more over break.”
“Oh,” Neville mumbled, carefully prying his gloves off.
“He’s rather sweet, a charming guy. I thought he’d be a right prick,” (Y/N) shrugged. “He’s terribly interesting to talk to, about muggle things and teaching. He’s shown me a lot of the castle that even in seven years of schooling I couldn’t have seen.”
“So you’re happy?”
“Mostly,” (Y/N) smiled. “I don’t know how much longer we’re going to be seeing each other, though. He’s a bit full of himself, but it’s been a bit of cheeky fun for the break.”
“I’m assuming he’s going with you to the wedding?” Neville tensed himself, preparing for a blow he’d have to take time to recover from.
“Yeah,” (Y/N) nodded, rolling her eyes. “ I invited him only because I didn’t want to show up stag. He’s been fun and all, I just don’t know how interested in me he is. If the wedding wasn’t next week, I would’ve cancelled my date,” she shrugged. “But, Ginny said she can’t wait to meet the man with the ridiculous name I’ve told her about.”
“Yeah, that would reflect badly on your end,” Neville mumbled, gathering the spare greenery to his right, ignoring practically everything (Y/N) just shared. “Did you need some tentacula leaves? This one got a bit overgrown and I know how expensive and sought after they can be.”
“Get out!” (Y/N) grinned, pulling a spare vial from her boot. “Of course! I only ever had them once or twice before, I’m petrified to get any closer to those plants ever since sixth year.”
“Yeah,” Neville hummed, recalling their lesson on the venomous plant years ago. (Y/N) had nearly had a trip to the hospital wing that day, if not for Neville reigning the plant in. “You just keep an extra vial on you at all times?” he asked, pointing to the boot.
“Slughorn said any good potioneer kept an extra vial or two on them for moments like these,” she smiled, carefully placing the small leaves into the container. “I enchanted my boots for my last job so I could keep my bag light,” she reached down, fishing in her right boot, pulling out her wand, waving it lightly as if to prove a point. “It’s also great for keeping my snacks away from Edgar.”
“Always the clever witch,” Neville smiled, watching (Y/N) shove the bottle back in her boot, her hair falling into her face. “Say, where’s your ribbon? It’s weird to see you without one.”
“Oh,” (Y/N)’s hand flew to her hair, suddenly embarrassed. “Lance told me he liked my hair better when it was down, so I’ve been trying it out.”
“Are you sure it isn’t because you both had the same hairstyle?” Neville joked, recalling the terribly long hair that Professor Knight possessed.
“Shove it,” (Y/N) laughed, pushing Neville slightly. “I wouldn’t put it past him, though. He’s terribly vain.”
“If it’s any consolation, I liked the ribbons,” Neville admitted, glancing down at the wooden floorboards. “Could see your face better.”
“I like the ribbons too,” (Y/N) said, feeling a faint heat trace her cheeks. “Say, want to see what else I keep in my boots?” (Y/N) quickly changing the subject. “I’ll keep my stinky socks away from your face… mostly.”
“Charming,” He agreed, watching (Y/N) struggle with her laces. As she focused intently on her brown boot, Neville noted the pink scrap of fabric he had left next to the tentacula plant. Quickly shoving it in his pocket, he coughed. “Go on, let’s see.”

Vibrant reds and golds streaked from the ceilings, Gryffindor colors. Entirely Harry’s idea. The reception hall was bustling with the quaint familiarities of old friends, some who hadn’t seen each other after the war was said and done. Half of the hall had red hair, the obvious mark of the Weasley family.
“I’m glad you made it, even though a little bird told me you had nearly forgotten,” Ginny laughed, elbowing (Y/N) in the arm. She looked stunning in an off-white wedding gown, a perfect dress for a perfect day. The ceremony had gone off without a hitch, minus a few rogue spells to deter the journalists from sneaking in.
“Longbottom told you?” (Y/N) groaned, pulling a face. “Of course he did.”
“Relax, (L/N),” Ginny laughed, carefully holding her champagne glass, afraid to spill. “He was only teasing you. It’s good to hear you two are back in each other’s good graces.”
“It wasn’t easy,” (Y/N) shrugged, recalling her sour attitude towards the Gryffindor, regretting it immensely. “But I’m glad we reconnected. I missed him,” her gaze met the sight of two little girls, both dressed in dark red dresses, playing with one another. “Your nieces are adorable.”
“Aren’t they?” Ginny turned to look at the girls, one blonde and one redheaded. “They’re both angels, thankfully they haven’t got much of my brother’s looks. I reckon it’s all from their wives,” she laughed. “Victoire is practically a Phlegm clone, blonde hair and all. Kayda has most of Charlie’s traits, beautiful brown eyes, but her face is like her mum’s.”
“She’s also terribly dragon-obsessed, like her dad,” Harry said, pulling an arm around his wife. He kissed her temple lightly. “She’s my favorite of the nieces, always asking the difficult questions, not a care in the world.”
“Harry!” Ginny slapped his chest, watching his smirk dwindle.
“Haven’t changed, have you Potter?” (Y/N) grinned, mouthing a ‘hello’ to the groom. He mouthed back, rubbing circles to Ginny’s shoulder.
“So this is Harry Potter,” said Lance, entering the conversation, holding two glasses of champagne. He pressed a peck to (Y/N)’s cheek, handing her a flute. “For my princess of potions.”
(Y/N) grimaced at the nickname, accepting the kiss and the drink. “Lance, I don’t think you’ve met the happy couple. This is Harry and Ginny Potter,” The couple swelled at the mention of their married name. “Gin, Harry, this is—”
“Lancelot Knight, Professor of Muggle Studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,” he bowed, the purple of his cape nearly hitting (Y/N) in the face. “Congratulations on your happiest of days.”
“Thank you, Lancelot,” Ginny forced a smile, sending a short look of confusion to (Y/N), almost disapprovingly. “We have some photos we need to go take,” Ginny pulled Harry to the side. “Enjoy the food and drinks. Try to find me later, (Y/N),” The couple walked off, murmuring rapidly between one another.
“He seemed unlike anything I’ve read about him,” Lance huffed, drowning his words in the champagne. “You’re not going to drink, darling?”
(Y/N) shook her head. “No,” she handed him the glass, watching him down it in two gulps. She noticed a nearly empty table with only one guest sitting. His hair was gelled back, nearly perfect. Too much gel. “I might go and have a seat, I’m feeling a little woozy.”
“While you waste your night,” Lance pulled his robe back, opening his body up to the crowd before him. “It’s time for me to network. When else can I get all of these famous witches and wizards in one place?”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes, finding herself at the aforementioned empty table. “Anyone sitting here?”
Neville looked up, he was intently focusing on the silverware before him. “No, I guess not,” he smiled, allowing (Y/N) to sit. “Your boyfriend seems to be having a good time, chatting up all our friends.”
“He’s getting on my last nerve,” (Y/N) groaned, holding her head in her hands. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he was just here to boast about himself to strangers with more distinguished accomplishments,” another groan. “He’s also not my boyfriend.”
“No? You seemed rather close,” Neville shrugged, watching the long haired wizard try to woo Molly Weasley. She turned away. “Trouble in paradise?”
“I had my suspicions before, but today is the nail in the coffin. I can’t believe I thought it was a good idea to bring him to the wedding.”
“You’re going to break up with him?”
“Can’t break up with someone if you never were together in the first place,” (Y/N) pointed. “But, yeah. I’ve been thinking about it.”
“Did you want to talk about it?” Neville asked, offering to listen.
“Not really,” (Y/N) admitted, letting her head rise. “But I would fancy a walk if you wanted to get some air?”
“Please,” Neville laughed. “I love Harry and Ginny, but parties like this are just not my style.”
“Tell me about it,” (Y/N) sighed, rising from her seat. Neville followed suit, exiting the banquet hall. “I would rather be cooped up in my office, alone with my cauldron. Not a care in the world.”
“You do tend to do that a bit,” Neville said, putting his hands in his pockets. “Are you working on anything new?” The courtyard outside of the banquet hall had a fresh dusting of snow, allowing the two to leave footprints behind.
“Still working on that batch of Felix Felicis,” she shrugged. “It’s probably the most complicated potion I’ve brewed. So fickle, needs constant attention,” (Y/N) kicked a small pebble. “I’ve also been working on my own potions, trying to make a name for myself as a potioneer, but I can’t quite figure any of it out.”
“Come on,” Neville scoffed. “You’ll be able to do it, I know you can,” he brushed the dusting of snow off of the bench, allowing for the two to sit. “Besides, even if you don’t, being Potions Master at Hogwarts is like, the highest honor a potioneer can have, yeah?”
“I suppose,” (Y/N) said, smoothing her dress skirt, ignoring the flush rising to her face. “It’s just so terribly difficult to make a name for myself when my predecessors are so… amazing. Horace Slughorn? Severus Snape?”
“Give it time,” Neville put a hand to her shoulder. “You need to remember that most potioneers didn’t have the pleasure to be taught by one of them, let alone both of them. You’re brighter than you know.”
“Wow,” (Y/N) sat, stunned by her friend’s words. “I guess I never thought about it like that.”
“Besides, Slughorn made you a part of the Slug Club sixth year, an elite gathering of the brightest and best students at Hogwarts,” he laughed. “The same club that hosted Harry Potter, the famed wizard.”
“He was collecting future favors, Nev,” (Y/N) smiled, recalling the club’s meetings. Lavish dinners, exquisite music. “He also kicked you out of the club for ‘not meeting his expectations’, which is hogwash,” she breathed deeply, her breath dancing away from her lips. “He just didn’t see what really matters.”
“You think?” Neville turned to look at (Y/N), now staring up at the stars. She nodded.
“Slughorn is terribly superficial, not really looking past the surface traits,” (Y/N) sat on her hands, trying to warm them up. “You know, he nearly threw a hissy-fit when I invited you to his Christmas party.”
“He did?” Neville asked, focusing on the constellations above them.
“I mean, don’t get me wrong, I would’ve loved to see you in that servers uniform,” (Y/N) laughed unashamed. “All distinguished and whatnot. Slughorn practically ignored me for almost two weeks after the party, like he disowned me as a student.”
“I remember that,” Neville recalled. “Whenever you had your hand up, he called on Hermione or Harry instead, even if they didn’t have the slightest clue on the answer. I never knew it was because of that…”
“It happens,” (Y/N) ran a hand through her hair, annoyed by the way it was falling. “I swear, I should’ve brought an extra ribbon…”
“Maybe you can steal one from Lancelot,” Neville laughed, turning his attention over to the witch to his right. He coughed. “But, if you need one…” he dug into his pocket, fingers finding the silky patch of fabric he had been searching for.
(Y/N) glanced down, eyes finding the pink ribbon between his fingers. It wasn’t clean, dirt dusting the torn edges. It brought a sense of familiarity, almost as if she’d seen it before. “Where’d you get that?”
“I’ve been waiting for a good time to return it,” Neville said, holding it out to her. “Been carrying it around for five years.”
“How did you…?”
“Happened to be at the right place at the right time,” Neville offered her the ribbon again, (Y/N) taking it gently in her hands. “You should wear your hair however you want, by the way, not just to please some bloke.”
“You’ve kept it?” (Y/N) asked, rubbing the silk with her thumb. It had to be the one she had lost during the battle. Why else would it be so dirty, so worn? “Why?”
“I mean, you’ve kept my jumper for seven years,” Neville laughed. “I could ask you the same question.”
“What?”
“My grey cardigan? From that day in Potions? I saw it on your dresser.”
“You went through my things?” (Y/N) asked, tone rising. “That’s a terrible invasion of privacy, Neville!”
“Invasion?” Neville said, matching her tone. “It was sitting next to that Honeydukes box, not exactly hidden from sight.”
(Y/N) stood up, now facing the Gryffindor fully. “Did you rifle through that too?” Her tone turned worried, only slightly. “Couldn’t help but snoop?”
“I didn’t snoop,” Neville responded, holding his hands in front of his chest, as if protecting himself. “Honest. You had it laying out—”
“—and you took a closer look at it!?”
“I’m not the one who kept something that wasn’t theirs for seven years,” Neville stood up, tired of being yelled at. “At least I was planning on giving the ribbon back!”
“You gave it to me,” she scoffed, rolling her eyes. “You said I could keep it—”
“—and I don’t regret it! I’m not accusing you of anything, (Y/N). You’re the one making a big deal out of this.”
“I’m making a big deal of this? Really?” (Y/N) pressed a finger to his chest. “You’re the one making a big deal of it, bringing up why I kept a gift? You kept a bloody ribbon of mine for no reason!”
“No reason?” Neville looked down at the finger on his chest, pushing it away. “I wanted to return it, but you ran off before I could. I didn’t see you for five years after-after—”
“—after what, Neville? Go on, spit it out,” (Y/N) crossed her arms, tipping her weight onto her left side.
“After you kissed me!” Neville practically screamed. “You kissed me and just… you just ran off,” his voice lowered, just for a moment. The wind died down, leaving a silence around the two.
“I didn’t know what else to do,” (Y/N) said coldly. “It was a mistake and I realized that the second I looked at you after the fact,” her face hardened, expression unmoving.
“Looked at me? You barely gave it a second before you ran off,” Neville replied, racking his memory. “You didn’t even think about what I could’ve been feeling in that moment, you just cared about yourself!”
“Here we go,” (Y/N) sighed. “It’s always about me, right? Sorry I ran off when my dad just died!”
“Can you shut it about your dad for five minutes?!” Neville didn’t mean to roar, the sound reverberating from the courtyard. Thankfully the party was still in full swing, the loud music echoing from the banquet hall. “Stop acting like you didn’t talk to me for five years was because of your dad! Yeah, he died. I’m sorry about that,” Neville found a moment of peace, clarity. “But you have to understand where my mind was at,” he sighed. “That was my first kiss, you know? You just ran off.”
(Y/N)’s face softened. “I didn’t know…”
“No, you didn’t,” Neville felt his hand run through his hair, covering it in a thin layer of gel. He had used too much. “I was royally crushed. My best mate kissed me and just ran off, never to be seen or heard from again. I tried to find you after, I did. I wanted to talk, but no one knew where you went."
“I went to the lake,” (Y/N) admitted. “Process my thoughts. My mum told me about my dad and I didn’t know what else to do,” she shrugged, rubbing her arms, now growing cold. “I finally went to go talk to you, but you were sitting with her, Luna. You looked happy, Nev. Happier than I had ever seen you,” tears pricked (Y/N)’s eyes, threatening to fall. “I knew that going to talk would mess that up for you, threaten that happiness you so desperately deserved. I did what I thought was best and just… left.”
“I was happy,” Neville admitted. “A war we had no option to be fighting in was over, for good. Damnit, (Y/N) of course I was happy.”
“I’m glad—”
“—but that’s just the thing, isn’t it? You did what you thought was best. Luna was my friend, she was there for me, she listened. You ran off at the first sign of danger, afraid of your feelings,” Neville seethed. “A terrible habit of yours, really.”
“So you’re not afraid of your feelings? That’s rich.”
“Of course I am, but I’ve learned to listen,” Neville said, feeling his back straighten. “Luna taught me that.”
“I bet she did,” (Y/N) hummed, hardly pleased with the mention of the Ravenclaw’s name.
“She taught me a lot, (Y/N). I never regretted my relationship with Luna, she helped me realize what I needed in my life,” Neville said, digging deep in his throat to find the words.
“What you needed? Tell me, Neville, what did you need that Luna couldn’t give you?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” he flung his hand out, as if to prove a point. “I needed you, (Y/N).”
Silence.
(Y/N) couldn’t bring herself to look up from her shoes, couldn’t bring herself to look at her best mate, wearing his heart on his sleeve. “Past tense?” she mumbled, knowing that Neville couldn’t hear her. A part of her hoped he did.
“I thought it was, too,” Neville admitted, hearing every word. “Past tense, that is. But after seeing that you kept my cardigan, a foolish part of me thought that maybe, just maybe, you felt that way about be at some point. Hell, maybe you felt that way now…” (Y/N)’s expression was unchanged, still looking at her shoes. “But you started dating that-that prick—”
“Who told me to go for it!?” (Y/N) finally shouted, tears dripping from her face, voice dripping with venom. “You’re the one who told me to ask him out, so I did. You told me to go through with taking him to the wedding, so I did—”
“You didn’t have to listen!”
“Would you stop shouting at me?!” (Y/N) shouted, almost ironically.
“Bloody hell, here I am, trying to tell you that I love you and all you can do is ask me to stop shouting!? Honestly, (Y/N), sometimes you really surprise me—”
It was then a familiar feeling danced across his lips, forcibly and fast, effectively shutting him up. The same feeling from five years ago.
She kissed him.

Star Crossed ⁕ Chapter Eight
Tumblr media
←Chapter 7 | Master list
Thalia hadn’t seen Fred for the rest of the day, even when lunch had arrived. By afternoon, she joined Ginny and Hermione in the entrance hall, watching the students who dared put their names into the goblet of fire. They were mostly there for Ginny, though, who insisted they watch alongside her even if the two were less than interested – they brought their choices of books along with them, which helped immensely with the boredom.
“I heard the veela dropped her name in just this morning” Ron whispered in their little group as he and Harry sat on the seats below them.
“For the last time, Ronald, she is not a veela” Hermione argued, shutting her heavy book, “If anything, she’s at least a quarter – which doesn’t count!”
Thalia sighed when their banter started escalating, trying her best to focus more intently on her book before Ginny started shaking her forearm to grab her attention. Confused, Thalia turned to the ginger, eyes wide in question before someone cleared their throat from behind her.
“I was wondering if this seat was taken?” Leo, whom Thalia had been introduced to earlier, asked as he motioned towards the vacant space beside her.
“No. Please” Thalia smiled, shutting her book. She looked around, realizing he was alone, “Decided to drop your entourage?”
Leo laughed, “Yes. They were quite a handful. I feared you would be too weirded out to speak to me”
Thalia noted his faint American accent, “No offense, I know this is way out of the blue but are you American by any chance?”
“A keen ear, you have” He replied, tapping Thalia’s ear – which shamefully made her blush, “Yes - half. Mum’s Swedish and my dad’s an American”
“Hey, Leo!” Ginny called out from beside Thalia when she noticed the awkwardness in the air start to thicken. See, upon Leo’s arrival, Hermione and Ron’s quarrel had stopped – deciding to pay more attention towards the two, the nosy buggers they are, “Did you know Thalia’s our star chaser?”
“Oh, really?” Leo grinned towards Thalia, eyes sparkling in interest, “I play beater back in Durmstrang”
Thalia couldn’t help but stare into his brown eyes. She didn’t feel like herself suddenly, corny as it may be, she felt herself swooning over the boy in front of her.
“I love beaters” her eyes widened at her sudden slip of the tongue. She heard Harry and Ron snort into their hands, not even trying to hide the fact that they were listening to the conversation. “I mean – beaters are cool, you know”
“Thank you, Thalia” Leo laughed.
Thalia never thought she would be thankful to see the twins emerging from the doors with another trick up their sleeves right until that moment. As they barged into the room screaming about how they ‘got it’ - by it, they mean the aging potion – Thalia felt herself release the breath she was holding, watching Leo’s attention turn towards the two.
The attention soon darted towards Viktor Krum and Professor Karkaroff, who sauntered into the room. The room dissolved into murmurs as Viktor stepped over the Age Line, pausing slightly to gauge the blue wisp that surrounded the goblet, before reaching over to toss his parchment in.
Stepping out, he turned to look at Leo, corners of his lips tugging up invisibly. “Leo, Adam has been searching for you” He looked at Thalia, “Thalia,”
With that, he walked ahead – out the Entrance Hall with Professor Karkaroff.
Leo stood from his seat, bowing in front of Thalia as he grabbed her hand softly, bringing it to his lips as he spoke, lips brushing onto the back of her hand, “I hate to be parted from you so early,”
Thalia couldn’t help her smile as he pressed a lingering kiss onto it, his eyes staring back at Thalia as he slowly let go of her hand. He bid the others good bye as he left, making sure to turn back towards Thaila with a wink.
“Merlin’s beard” Ginny breathed out, still staring at the spot where Leo had bowed. Thalia could still feel his lips on the back of her hand, and the tingles left from his growing beard brushing against it, “Thalia... Merlin’s beard, Thalia”
“I felt like I was witnessing a fairy tale” Hermione added breathlessly, looking up at Thalia with wide eyes.
Their moment was cut short, however, when Fred and George Weasley were thrown against the hall with screams, both bearing long white beards that strangely resembled Dumbledore’s. They were quickly ushered out of the room towards the Infirmary, where Madam Pomfrey had been tending to under-aged students that have attempted to go through the Age Line as well.
˚✧₊⁎⁺˳✧༚
The Infirmary was silent when Thalia walked in, the doors slamming shut behind her as she marched towards the two beds at the end of the room – the only ones occupied, well, except for the other one where a Slytherin was fast asleep.
“Came to gloat?” Fred asked sarcastically once Thalia was stood in between them, a stern expression on her face.
“I told you two not to do it” She said blankly as she crossed her arms over her shoulders. “You’re lucky you got off with beards and a couple of bruises!”
“Well, it’s your fault”
“Here we go again,” George uttered from his bed, clearly done with his brother antics. “Fred, please just shut your mouth”
“Well, it is her fault” Fred’s hand flew to motion towards Thalia, who stared back at him in disbelief, “If you hadn’t completed the potion last night, this wouldn’t have happened”
“You asked for my help!” She exclaimed exasperatedly, arms unclasping from her chest, “The least you could’ve done is say thank you”
“Well, thank you, almighty Pallas” Fred replied sarcastically, mocking a bow from his position, “You could’ve stopped us if you weren’t so busy with your boy toy”
“Fred” George warned.
“Be careful what you say next, Weasley”
“You’ve changed, Thalia!”
By now, Thalia was sure the Slytherin in the other bed has woken up, considering Fred’s voice was increasing in volume.
“I’m the one who’s changed?” She looked towards George, who didn’t seem to know what to do – considering he’s confined to his bed as well, “You’re the one whose been acting like a prick ever since the Triwizard was announced”
“You’re the one acting all easy. First with Diggory, and now with that- with that Durmstrang boy!”
“Easy?!”
“I said what I said” The older twin replied arrogantly, challenging Thalia with a look.
“There is nothing wrong with making friends, Fred Weasley” Thalia replied angrily, not being able to control herself as her feet took her to Fred’s bedside, her finger jabbing his chest repeatedly. “Merlin knows you wouldn’t be one from the way you’ve spoken to me recently”
“Great!” Fred slapped Thalia’s hand away, “I never wanted to be your friend anyway!”
“Brilliant” George muttered defeatedly.
“You’re a prick, Fred Weasley” She practically growled at him, “Best of luck trying to find anyone who can stand you, you dick, because I. AM. DONE”
“Finally!” Fred exclaimed when Thalia stormed off, watching her flip him the bird – which he returned as the doors slammed shut.
A few beats passed between them in the quiet hospital wing, until the Slytherin from the other bed spoke up, “That was a dick move, mate. I may be in one of the foulest houses but I’d never go as far as degrade a woman’s worth”
˚✧₊⁎⁺˳✧༚
“I’m not even gonna say anything to you two about what happened in the Infirmary a while ago” said Ginny firmly through gritted teeth when the twins joined her for dinner. Thalia had moved a couple of seats down the table with Lee Jordan, Harry, and Hermione, all huddled up in conversation. He sees Leo Kurroff had abandoned the Slytherin table as well, sitting beside Thalia as he spoke comfortingly to the girl.
“I don’t know what’s going on with you, Fred Weasley” Ginny broke his gaze, “But you better pull it together. I've written to mum already so expect a howler tomorrow morning”
With that, she left, moving towards Thalia who smiled down at her.
The Great Hall was silenced when Professor Dumbledore stood from his seat, approaching the goblet that has been moved from the entrance hall.
“Well, the goblet is almost ready to make its decision” he said, motioning towards it as its blue flames started flickering angrily, “When the champions’ names are called, I would ask them please come up to the top of the hall, and go through into the chamber” He motioned towards the door behind the staff table, “Where they will be receiving their first instruction”
Fred’s eyes darted towards Thalia, watching her laugh with Leo and his own friends – even with Ron and Ginny.
The flamed inside the goblet suddenly turned red, sparks flying from it. A tongue of flame shot up, releasing a piece of parchment into the air. The whole room gasped, watching as the headmaster snatched the parchment mid-air.
“The champion for Durmstrang...” Professor Dumbledore started, “Will be Viktor Krum”
Cheering and applause erupted in the room as Viktor stood, walking towards Professor Dumbledore who congratulated him. Fred could see Thalia looking up at Kurroff in concern, her hand on his forearm comfortingly. Fred didn’t notice how his hand started gripping his spoon tighter when the Durmstrang placed his own hand over her, squeezing her hand reassuringly while mouthing an ‘It’s okay’
Viktor disappeared into the chamber as the clapping died down. Then, the fire turned into a bright shade of red again, shooting out a piece of parchment once more “The champion for Beauxbatons... Fleur Delacour!”
Once again, the Great Hall was full of applause and cheers as the ‘veela’ got up, smiling at everyone as she made a beeline towards the chamber.  From his seat Fred could faintly his younger brother’s mention of her in their little group, followed by one of Hermione’s snide remarks as she dismissed the topic completely.
They were enveloped in silence again as the goblet spat out their last champion, Dumbledore catching the paper with such ease. “The Hogwarts champion is... Cedric Diggory!” Dumbledore announced.
Applause erupted in the hall as Cedric stood from his seat, hugging his friends as he made his way towards the staff table. He passed by Thalia, to whom he gave a brief hug, before rushing towards the door, disappearing as well into the chamber.
“Excellent!” The headmaster exclaimed once everyone had calmed from their excitement, “Well, we now have our three champions. I am sure I can count upon all of you to give your champions every ounce of support you can muster. By cheering you champion on, you will contribute - “
But he stopped speaking. The students – even those who weren’t paying attention – turned to look at him, confused as to why he was just standing there, staring at the goblet.
As the flames of the goblet turned bright red again – they understood why.
“I thought there were only three champions” Fred heard Thalia’s attempt at a soft voice as she spoke to Lee and Leo, who both shrugged, equally confused.
A paper flew from the Goblet, which Dumbledore caught hesitantly. He stared blankly at the parchment, unaware of the students and staff staring at him, waiting for the name to be read aloud.
He cleared his throat, stating – almost inaudibly, “Harry Potter,”
There was no reaction, no one dared to speak – to question it.
Then, Thalia stood up, “What?” She exclaimed, voice laced with concern and worry. She looked back at Harry who seemed mortified, knowing full-well he didn’t even put his name into the goblet.
Dumbledore shared a look with Thalia, before calling out again. “Harry Potter! Harry! Up here, please!”
Harry got up from his seat, stumbling slight as he made his way to the staff table, before stopping to look at Dumbledore. “Well, through the door, Harry” The older wizard said with a forced smile.
Harry moved, walking into the chamber, and disappearing inside.
˚✧₊⁎⁺˳✧༚
Thalia joined the others as they waited in the Gryffindor common room for Harry to return. She was quiet – a hundred thoughts running in her mind all at once. She spoke to Harry about the tournament before, and he had expressed his opinion on the matter. He told her he wouldn’t want to join even if he was at the right age, knowing he’s had enough of all the trouble he had endured for three years in a row.
Now here he was, a Hogwarts champion – the second one.
Was the goblet cursed of some kind? Confunded, maybe?
Her thoughts were broken by the sound of applause and whistles, as Harry crawled into the portrait hole with a prominent frown on his face.
“You should’ve told us you’d enter!” She heard Fred bellow, catching the boy looking both annoyed and deeply impressed at the same time.
“How did you do it without getting a beard? Brilliant!” roared George.
Suddenly, everyone else followed through with their own questions, bombarding Harry with nonsense she knew he didn’t want to deal with right now.
“Enough!” Thalia bellowed, smiling satisfactorily as the common room silenced. She rose from her armchair, clutching her book in hand as she stepped in front of Harry, shielding him from the students who tried to grab at his robes. “Don’t you see the boy is upset? Leave him to rest, will you?”
“Thank you, Lia” Harry mumbled, offering Thalia a tired smile, “I really am tired, guys. I’ll see you tomorrow”
With a wave, he squeezed himself out of the crowd that formed, stopping by the foot of the staircases to peek at Thalia, watching as she disappeared up to the girls’ dormitories, ignoring everyone else along the way.

Friday Night Dinner: the Best Episodes
https://ift.tt/3urFJpq
Friday Night Dinner is ten.
That’s ten years of crimble-crumble, humble bumbling, manic misunderstandings, and more lovely bits of squirrel than you could shake a dead fox at. For thirty-seven Friday nights across six glorious seasons the Goodman family – shirtless dad, Martin (Paul Ritter); long-suffering but ever hopeful mum, Jackie (Tamsin Greig), and their visiting prank-wanker sons Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) – served up a banquet of laughs to a hungry nation, ably assisted by chronically persistent, reality-adjacent next-door-neighbour, Jim (Mark Heap) and his faithful dog, Wilson, and a host of other regulars and monstrously memorable one-offs besides.
In celebration, then, of one of the most smartly-observed, perfectly-cast comedies of recent years, in chronological order, we count down ten of the show’s best.
The Sofabed
Series 1, Episode 1
Most first episodes – nay entire first series – of new comedies can be scattergun. Maybe the characters haven’t quite coalesced, or their fictional universe doesn’t feel ‘lived in’ yet. Not so with Friday Night Dinner. The show arrived fully-formed, with the Goodmans seeming as real as any family in your street; perhaps even your own family.
All of the gags, rituals and dynamics destined to run and grow and fold back in upon themselves throughout the series’ run are here: Martin’s secrets, conspiracies and hearing difficulties; Jim’s constant interruptions; Adam and Johnny’s brutal one-upmanship; the salt-in-the-water prank; Martin’s fondness for shouting ‘shit on it’.
The first episode revolves around the selling of a sofabed (with a brief sojourn into conspiracy when Martin inveigles his children into helping him hide the old magazines Jackie has ordered him to destroy), a simple enough transaction that turns to tragedy when death comes (quite literally) calling. Martin’s mis-hearing and misunderstanding of a crucial piece of information whilst standing at the bottom of a stair-and-couch-based conga line brings the series first proper belly-laugh, and with it the realisation that Friday Night Dinner is going to be something special.
Mr Morris
Series 2, Episode 2
Mr Morris, played by Harry Landis, is a marvellous comic creation. With his predilection for getting topless and dressing people down at the dinner table, he’s like a malignant, mirror-universe version of Martin. With the eyes of Mr Magoo and the moustache of Adolf Hitler – and something of the bearing of both – Mr Morris, Granny’s new and very married boyfriend, quickly establishes himself as the dinner guest from Hell.
After crashing into their house and blaming them for the damage, the pugilistic, preening, proud, petty, and pretty much certifiably insane pensioner goes on to engage in horrendously public displays of affection with Granny; shout angrily over the phone at his 95-year-old wife; make Adam and Johnny pay for the, well, johnnies he later planned to use on their grandma; accuse Adam of sexual assault, and then challenge the whole household to a half-naked fist fight. Just another Friday night at the Goodman’s.
The Mouse
Series 2, Episode 6
‘Mouse’ marks the first time that Jim manages to get his feet under the dinner table of the Goodman home, and it’s everything you could have hoped for. And more.
Normally the family manufactures its own chaos during the weekly meal – with extra helpings of misunderstandings, feuds, schadenfreude, embarrassment and horror – but here the Goodmans are cast as the straight men to Jim’s one-man reality-wrecking crew. While interpersonal connections and rituals are alien to Jim, the Goodmans’ set of mannerisms and catchphrases are his greatest challenge yet. His interpretation of their Jewish faith is equal parts sweet to absolutely bonkers, and only Jim’s anxiety, eagerness to please, incomprehension, and molten naivety keeps things from becoming insulting.
All of the Goodman rituals to which the viewer has become accustomed rain down on Jim in a hail of friendly fire, leading him to gargle on ‘Jewish water’ and scrutinise his dinner plate for hints of squirrel. The moment where Jim briefly considers whether he should eat the episode’s eponymous mouse as it scurries onto his dinner plate is pure comedy gold.
Christmas
Series 2, Episode 7
This episode features the first appearance of Rosalind Knight as Martin’s mother, or ‘Horrible Grandma’ as she’s known to the family. Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace and celebration, but that’s not an easy ask when your guest of dishonour is a terrifying little lady who’s equal parts Livia Soprano to the Shushing Library Spook from Ghostbusters. Very few Christmases contain the line, ‘Thanks for raping our grandma’s dog on Christmas day’, fewer still see a grandson sharing his grandma’s dog’s oxygen mask, but then nobody does Christmas like the Goodmans. And they’re not even supposed to be doing it.
There’s a surprisingly beautiful moment at the end of this episode, courtesy of resident oddball, Jim, that – like all of the other rare occasions on which the show veers towards sentimentality – is quickly undercut by a well-timed, and very welcome, gag.

The Girlfriend
Series 3, Episode 1
Adam finally meets his match: an eight-year-old girl who blackmails him into a chaste but never-the-less irritating and inappropriate ‘relationship’ following the discovery of a racy, unsolicited picture of his girlfriend’s sister on his phone, while his girlfriend is there at the Goodman house for dinner. Thus unfolds an evening of unusual foot-washing, forced transvestism, secrets, lies, panic, and a stunning coup de grace from Jonny, who helps put the final nail into the coffin of his brother’s fledgling relationship.
The Fox
Series 3, Episode 2
Martin likes to squirrel away a great many things, many of them ridiculous, most of them out of sight of his wife. But Johnny and Adam probably weren’t expecting to discover a dead fox in their father’s chest freezer, much less find themselves enlisted to help move it around town like a hitman’s hairy bounty until the heat died down long enough for their father to have it stuffed. The funniest thing about Martin’s many hare-brained (or, in this case, fox-brained) schemes is the energy he throws at them, the sort of logistical chicanery seldom seen this side of the CIA. Watching the men of the family toddle around hither and thither with a dead fox, hiding it in the dining room, hurling it in cupboards, wedging it through windows, is exactly as funny as it sounds, and – as always – just when you think Martin’s got away with it… he hasn’t.
The Two Tonys
Series 4, Episode 1
Martin is an exceptionally quick-thinker. Unfortunately, his speed of thought is seldom married with precision, and he usually finds himself blurting something out at the start of an evening and spending the rest of that evening teetering on the edge of oblivion, with his long-suffering wife ready to push him off. His blurt-out in ‘The Two Tonys’, though, is perhaps his most desperate and ill-considered. In a bid to encourage Jason Watkins’ Tony – a loathed associate from years ago Martin had invited to dinner believing him to be another, better Tony – to leave the Goodman home, he forces Jackie to go along with the ruse that her mother has just died. This gambit, like all Goodman gambits, backfires spectacularly, and what follows is a farce worthy of Frasier, everything culminating in a desperate chase and the furious weaponisation of a pineapple.
The Funeral
Series 4, Episode 5
Friday Night Dinner deals with death incredibly often, and incredibly well, wringing joyous laughter from that most terrifying and inevitable of our shared fates. Here we have another delicious dose of Horrible Grandma, who’s in town to lay to rest her dear departed brother, Saul. Martin is pressured into giving Saul’s eulogy, even though he never really knew or liked his uncle all that much. Cue a day of stress, arrests, tense stand-offs and tantrums, ending with an uninvited Jim appearing at Saul’s graveside clutching four black balloons, while Martin proceeds to recite Saul’s death certificate in lieu of a proper farewell. Immediately following a Grand Prix-inspired coffin malfunction, Jim’s dog Wilson enters stage-left to put a necro-quasi-cannibalistic spin on the ending of Todd Solondz‘s Happiness.
Dad’s Birthday
Series 6, Episode 4
Horrible Grandma might make for a terrible dinner guest, but she makes for a perfect guest star. This time, we bid her goodbye for good, but not before a great deal of caustic put-downs, cathartic showdowns and perhaps the funniest, most macabre magic trick of all time, courtesy of resident ‘magician’ Jim.
Females
Series 6, Episode 6
‘Females’ wasn’t intended to be the final episode of the series, at least according to comments made by series’ creator Robert Popper immediately following its transmission. And it still might not be the end. But it’s hard to imagine a better, funnier or more touching swan-song for the show, with or without the tragic death of Paul Ritter.
Adam and Jonny finally have ‘females’ (as their progressive dad has always called their prospective girlfriends) in their lives at the same time, and Jackie is overjoyed to be welcoming them into her home. She thinks the evening is going to be perfect, which is rather naïve of her considering that she’s married to Martin.
Sure enough, Martin manages to contaminate every course of the meal with shards of broken glass, a calamity he’s forced to reveal to everyone but Jackie, going on to enlist their help in somehow preventing the matriarch from choking to death, while simultaneously preventing her from discovering the depths of his dangerous ineptitude. Martin is, of course, thoroughly rumbled, but before Jackie can strike him down with great anger and furious vengeance, two pregnancies are announced in quick and joyous succession.
‘Females’ is solidly, classically funny, but it’s the episode’s smaller, more intimate moments that will linger longest in the imagination: the brothers’ new-found, prank-less affection for each other; the subdued but sincere affection between Jackie and Martin as they discuss their new roles and the future; and the now suddenly larger Goodman family dancing as one in the living room. As codas go, it’s a damn near perfect one.
If Friday Night Dinner comes back, let it be in twenty years when Adam and Jonny are middle-aged. For now, I hope Martin gets to enjoy many long years as a granddad.

Friday Night Dinner series 1-6 are available to stream in the UK on All4 and Netflix.

Field of Poppies Part 4
Summary: After being apart for six years, childhood friends Tommy and Amelia reunite under odd circumstances. Tommy is an outspoken young man and Amelia is pregnant and out on the streets. The bond of family can be unbreakable but it is tested often. Especially when Europe descends into war.
Part 4: The Shelbys go on holiday to the summer fair.
Tumblr media
             With school on summer holiday, Polly was at her wit's end with the children. While they mostly played outside, they’d always be in and out of the house banging around, tracking mud on the floor, coming in with scraped knees, or crying about something being unfair. Meanwhile, Finn was starting to walk and was also wreaking havoc, pulling on everything not tied down and making quick getaways.
            So, it was decided they would spend some of the holiday on the road with the Strong family. Of course, Tommy and Arthur weren’t exactly pleased. Seeing as the betting shop was just getting up and started, they couldn’t afford to lose out on money. Polly insisted and said Danny and the other men could handle a few weeks.
            Going on seven months pregnant, Amelia was a bit apprehensive about traveling out to the Welsh countryside. However, Tommy assured her that if she were to go into an early labor, she was in capable hands, probably better than any doctor in Birmingham. It was enough to sway her. They all needed a break from the city’s smoke and mud. Some fresh air was bound to do them good.
             And oh how sweet the air smelled once they were finally away from the city limits. Amelia had been to the countryside before but had never joined Tommy’s family to see their kin out on the road. Her parents would never allow her to be near other Travelers, especially ones who tended to be more nomadic in nature than the Shelbys were.
            But Tommy had told her enough stories as a child to make her interested. He tried to scare her with the stories they would tell around the fires. Try to explain the excitement of spring and summer fairs. It seemed like another world when he described it all. To be out in the Welsh wilderness, sleeping under the stars, riding horses all day, spinning yarns about fairies, it seemed to be a child’s dream.
            Now, Amelia was much more aware of the struggles Tommy’s extended family faced. The prejudice and poverty. None of those issues mattered as a child. They had blinders on so they wouldn't see the ugly side of life. All they saw was the fantastical magic the world still held onto. She yearned to have that innocence back but there was no going back.
   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            On the second day of traveling to the Black Mountains, Tommy was steering the vardo with Amelia sitting beside him. He held the position naturally, letting the reins be an extension of his arms as he guided the two horses along. Arthur was on another horse, riding along while Polly and the other three children stayed in the back of the wagon.
            “Good to be outside, aye?” Tommy struck up a conversation as a lull in the muggy afternoon settled on them.
            “Oh yes.” Amelia nodded. “Good to see the clear sky instead of smoke.” She joked. "I forgot how blue the sky could get sometimes."
            “Get used to it. ‘Cause when we’ve got everything going with the shop, m’gonna buy a house out in the countryside.”
            She smiled. “Is that right?” It wasn’t the first time Tommy made bold claims. Once money started rolling in from the betting shop, he started promising things that sounded outlandish even to Arthur. He promised a brand new luxury car to John, a new five story house for Polly, as many horses as Ada could want, and now a house in the country.
            “Like a cottage. Mum, dad, and I used to rent one for the holidays out in Wiltshire.” She recalled. “Cute little place.”
            “No.” He shook his head, the cigarette in his mouth practically just a bit of ash. “One of those fucking big ones. Like royals have. Dukes 'n whatever they are.”
            “Oh, Thomas, please.” She giggled and nudged him.
            “I’m serious!” He chucked the last bit of his cigarette. “Big place, dozens of bedrooms, proper kitchen, riding stables, maids, cooks, everything. We’ll live there with the baby. He’ll have room to run ‘stead of being cooped up in Small Heath.”
            It sounded wonderful to Amelia, like the stories he used to tell about traveling. But it was so far-fetched. “Can we focus just on what we’ve got now?” She wondered. “Tommy, I’m okay with making do with what I’ve got…and what you and your family have given me.” She touched his knee.
            He glanced over at her, his blue eyes so bright in the summer sun. “You don’t think you deserve more than this?” He wondered. “Wouldn’t you rather a nice big house, proper holidays to places like France?”
            “All those things would be nice but if I never get those things then I’ll be fine. I’m okay with what I have now.” She smiled at him to reassure that there wasn’t anything he needed to prove to her or promise.
            Tommy sighed and his eyes returned to the grassy path ahead of them. “I know the baby’s not mine but…I don’t want any other kid to go hungry like we did. Ain’t right how we were brought up. And if I can change that for my family and for the baby then, why not?”
            Amelia felt she wasn’t in a place to tell if he was right or wrong. So, she leaned over to kiss his cheek affectionately. “You’re a good man, Tommy Shelby.” She said softly. “A very good man.”
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            They met up with the Strongs at their camp and together they moved North to go to the Appleby fair. Ada chattered on to Amelia the whole ride there about how fun the fair was. There were crafts and fortune-tellers and horses, horses, horses. She would see all of her cousins and other distant relatives that they only got to see once in a blue moon. They’d race horses, swap stories, share laughs, and her brothers would box with the Lee boys.
            Although the trip took a little under a week, Amelia was in good spirits the whole way there. Tommy was practically a different person out in the countryside. He knew how to survive in Small Heath and knew how to survive outdoors just as well. He let loose a bit, not bothering to dress up and going barefoot a lot of the times. He smiled more and played with his siblings. It was as if he had left all his worries back in the city.
            Amelia thought he was so beautiful in the sun. His smile brightened ten fold, his eyes sparkled, and he moved as if he didn't have any stress on his shoulders. It warmed her heart to see him play-wrestling with John, riding horses with Ada, and picking up Finn to spin him around. For a moment, she pictured her child in the scene. A little boy or girl toddling after Tommy, looking for his attention. Tommy scooping them up and holding them close, just as a father would.
            All she could do was smile and keep her wide-eyed fantasies to herself. But it was so easy to get caught up in the magic of the forests and fields. It was so easy to get caught up in the smile of Tommy Shelby.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            Ada was right, there was a lot to be said about the fair. Intricately and brightly painted vardos lined up and many people were milling around. There were people washing their horses in the rivers as children played and splashed one another by the banks.
            After a long journey, Amelia wanted to stretch her legs. Tommy walked with her along the river as the rest of the family prepared camp and watered the horses.
            “Pol said your feet might be hurting these days.” Tommy’s aunt was his go-to to get any pregnancy answers.
            “They’re a bit swollen, the heat doesn’t help,” Amelia admitted. Although getting to walk was nice, she was starting to get flushed in the heat.
            “And uh…any word from home?” He kept his eyes to the ground, kicking a stone along their way.
            “While we’ve been on the road for over a week?” She raised an eyebrow at him. “I haven’t gotten any messenger birds.”
            Tommy chuckled. “I meant when we were back home. I mean, we haven’t talked about it much.” He pointed out.
            Her smile faded. “No, I haven’t heard from them. I don’t know if they know where I am but I figured…well, I figured they would’ve thought to try and find me in Small Heath. I don’t know where else I would’ve gone with nothing in me pockets.
            “And the father?” They hadn’t broached the subject before because Polly insisted that he leave the matter be. But curiosity was just too damn tough to ignore.
            “Tom, I told you…”
            “Tommy Shelby!” Someone crowed out ahead of them. Three young men about Tommy and Arthur’s age stopped them.
            His face soured when he saw who was calling him. “Will.” He muttered obviously not in the mood to talk to them.
            “I heard the Shelbys were coming, how the hell are ya?” Will appeared to be the oldest of the three, a tall, broad-shouldered man with dark hair.
            “Fine, fine.”
           "And he's got someone up the duff." Will smacked a hand to his forehead when he saw Amelia. "Shelby, Shelby, Shelby. What a shame! You have to learn how to pull out or these things happen, Tommy."  He tutted in Shelta. "She is a sight though."
            Amelia suddenly felt very self-conscious about the baby bump showing. Of course, she ought to be showing at her stage of pregnancy, but she wasn’t keen on embarrassing the Shelbys. Especially if Tommy wasn’t actually the father.
            “Watch your fucking mouth.” Tommy spat venomously.
            The Lee brothers jostled each other, pleased that he was fighting back. “Still got that mouth on ya, Tommy Boy, haven’t ya?”
            “Fuck off.” He wrapped an arm around Amelia’s waist to steer her away from the brothers. “Fucking lowlifes never know when to shut their mouths..” He muttered under his breath.
            “Still got a fight in ya then? Or are ya too scared to step into the ring with me?” Will taunted after him.
            Amelia felt Tommy’s arm stiffen and he stopped in his tracks. Her eyebrows knit in worry. “Tom…” She warned.
            But he slipped away from her and turned to face the brothers again. “Name a time.”
 ~~~~~~~~~~
            “Ah, it’s never too long ‘til Tommy gets into it with one of the Lees at the fair.” Arthur punched his brother in the arm. “Lucky you got practice with those Birmingham Boys, aye?”
            Tommy avoided Amelia’s questioning glance even though he could feel her eyes on him.
            Polly didn’t even look like she wanted to get into the matter. Men fought at fairs, that was only tradition and it was in good fun most of the time. Besides, Small Heath was much more dangerous than a bout of boxing.
            Around the Shelbys’ camp, there was a buzz in the air of excitement. Music could be heard in a couple of different directions, people laughed and joined each other for a good time around the roaring fires and lanterns. Some girls some yards away were dancing in a circle, their long skirts illuminated by the flames.
            “When can I fight, Pol?” John asked hopefully. “I can take the Lees too!”
            “Hush.” Polly scolded. “When you’re older and you’ve learned how to box properly. I don’t want to bring you home with a broken hand.”
            John grimaced. “I’m old enough.” He muttered.
            “Men don’t pout or slouch.” She said and stood up to tend to Finn who was stirring in the vardo.
            “You gonna kill ‘im then, Tom?” Arthur smirked. “I heard he was…” He made a subtle gesture to Amelia who was talking softly with Ada. The eldest Shelby wanted to mention about how bad Tommy had it for Amelia. It was blatantly obvious to everyone. But neither of them seemed to want to admit it.
            Tommy tossed a twig into the fire mindlessly. “He’ll learn to keep his fucking mouth shut.” He mumbled.
            “Shelby!” Someone called.
            Arthur grinned and clapped his brother on the back. “Let’s go then.”
            “Tom?” Amelia looked worried when they stood up. “Where are you going?”
            “Gonna go fight, Mel. Tommy’s gonna show them Lees how to throw a good punch”
            “But…” Her stomach went into knots. “Maybe you could stay here and-”
            “Won’t be long, Mel,” Tommy promised.
            “Fine, then I’m coming.” She wrapped her shawl tighter around her shoulders and followed them.
            “Not really for women.” Arthur tried to show opposition to the idea but Tommy didn’t seem to mind. Maybe if she saw him fight, she would know he could hold his own and she wouldn’t have to worry about the betting shop. No longer was he the stick-thin little teenager who was sometimes more bark than bite. No, he’d found his anger and learned to use it to his advantage.
                       The makeshift ring was lit by lanterns and nearby fires. A group was already forming to watch the show. The Lees were riling Will up who was already there, waiting for his opponent. But they all seemed to be in good nature, passing drinks and cigarettes, laughing, and cussing.
            Tommy pulled off his undershirt and handed it to Amelia to hold. She was a bit stunned to see he had a tattoo on his chest. The sun-like lines were certainly new as far as she was aware. But she didn’t mention the ink.
            Arthur was handing his brother a flask, Tommy downing the contents before ducking under the rope.
            The crowd of onlookers was a bit rowdy, pleased to see young blood fighting like real men. Bare knuckles, no weapons, how it was meant to be a Romani man. A good show of tradition.
            Amelia felt her palms start to sweat. Will was a good head taller than Tommy was and seemingly more muscular by his build.
            However, Arthur, standing beside her, looked less than concerned. “He’ll be alright, Mellie. He’s taken down bigger fuckers than this one.” He promised.
            Amelia had seen Tommy fight before, but the last time must’ve been when they were only thirteen. The wiry boy had a habit for picking fights and never staying down even when he was bleeding or had a broken bone. She never seemed to mind seeing him fight while they were in school. But seeing him in the ring with someone bigger than him, it made her stomach flip-flop.
            And Tommy drew out the suspension. He allowed Will to get in a couple of swings, but he dodged them. His size allowed him to be quicker and more agile on his feet. The two circled around each other, fists up by their faces. Will looked smug with himself, confident that he would win. On the other hand, Tommy had fire in his blue-eyes. He wasn't fighting to have a few laughs.
            “Hit ‘im, Tommy!” Arthur roared after his brother dodged a couple more blows.
            Something changed in Tommy’s eyes as he threw a punch. Amelia could hear the blow land even over the boisterous crowd. She winced and ducked her head a bit. When had she ever been afraid to watch a fight? She must’ve egged on a few scuffles in her day. Goading Tommy to kick in the teeth of the school bully. But when Will landed a punch and she saw Tommy’s head jerk back, she cringed and hid her face in Arthur’s sleeve.
            She could still hear the contact of punches, the sound of the men spurring them on, and the grunts from Will and Tommy as they fought. But she couldn’t bear to watch it.
            It only took a few minutes before someone was shouting.“Oi, oi! Get ‘im off!”
            “Tom, c’mon, that’s enough!” Arthur moved from Amelia and got into the ring.
            She looked up and saw Tommy on top of Will, pummeling his face. Arthur ripped his brother off.
            "Got fucking devils in them. Those fucking Shelbys are rabid." Someone nearby remarked.
             "Aye, get it from their father. Murder in their blood."
             "Do not let me hear you talking about her again." Tommy threatened in Shelta before he finally let his brother steer him away from the ring. He spat on the ground, leaving the Lees to help an injured Will off the ground.
            Coated with a sheen of sweat, Tommy was breathing hard. Even in the dim light, Amelia could assess the damage. It seemed Will had taken the brunt of the fight. Tommy only walked away with a bloody lip, a bruise forming on his jaw, and some dirt sticking to his torso.
            “Go wash off and calm the fuck down,” Arthur ordered before heading back toward the camp.
  ~~~~~~~~~~
            Amelia followed Tommy to the river so he could wash the blood and dirt away. She lingered behind as he knelt down on the bank and splash cold water over him.
            “What did you say to him?” She wondered.
            “Nothing.” Tommy shook the water from his hair and wiped his hands over his face.
            “Well, you said something, Tom.”
            He stood and took his shirt back, using it to dry off a bit. “It was nothing.” He said again.
            They stood in silence for a bit. Music still hung in the air as the night wore on. There was an uproar from the crowd, signaling the start of another boxing match.
            Curious, Amelia stepped toward him and splayed her fingers out over his tattoo, following the direction of the lines. “This is new.”
            Tommy felt like his skin was on fire even after the cold douse of water. He couldn’t find the words for a long moment, simply watching her slender fingers trailing over the inked lines. “I-uh…you can’t tell Pol about it.” He tried to hide his stammer. “She’ll fucking kill me.”
            Amelia laughed softly and withdrew her hand. “Alright.” She agreed. “Your secret is safe with me.”
            He smiled and threw on the shirt to conceal the tattoo. “C’mon.” He murmured and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Ignored / Ben Hanscom Imagine
Tumblr media
Request: I know you've already done a Ben Hanscom x daughter reader imagine recently, but could you do one where the reader has 3 older brothers and she feels like they all ignore her for being the only girl in the house (mom left), but Ben tells her their not?
Of course, love. Also I’m sorry for being away for so long <3
Comments are much appreciated!
The Hanscom boys are playing in the back garden, each smiling as they push back on one another and tumble, rolling and staining their shirts on the damp grass. They glance over to you, from where you stood on the patio, but only for a moment before they returned back to ramming into each other and starting to place their feet on the lower branches of the nearest tree. Glancing up towards the top of the shaking leaves, the light cascading through the thin sticks almost as bright as their shaking laughter, you wish they would let you climb that tree with them.
You, instead, turned in the opposite direction, going further towards the gate of rough wood at the edge of the Hanscom property, moving further away from the pool. The slight dampness of the concrete leaves squelching footsteps as you jumped down onto the stone path, wandering past the huge weeping willow flowing down onto the dank and squishy ground. Clusters of defiant daffodils reared their golden heads and there were smatters of fuchsia along side the scarlet and saffron hued primroses. Dad always was a great gardener, the flower beds a riot of May colour. You had always loved spending afternoons after school alone with your dad, your brothers inside watching television, your knees in the dirt as he cupped your hands around a Daffodil bulb. Ben always looked radiant, a bright smile on his face, no cares about the blue shorts that dug into the soil and stained with mud. He always looked so young, then, when he was out in nature - you always thought it was the closest you would ever see him as he was back when he lived in Derry. He didn’t exactly own many pictures of himself, but from time to time, when he had had a hard day and would slump down beside you in front of the fireplace, he would show you a glimpse of the photo booth strip he kept in his pocket, the last hint into his childhood he had.
‘Remember, Y/n,’ he would say, his arm wrapping around your shoulder, ‘that you are never as alone in this world as you think.’
You would never bring it up, especially so soon after the divorce, but you always saw the forlorn look in his eyes and the way his thumb would stroke over the red haired girl at the edge of the frame.
You sat down at the garden bench, fashioned a long time ago from a wind-felled tree, the legs being sections of the trunk and the top a fine long plank rendered a deep soulful brown by the varnish. You watched your brothers laugh and play from the corner of the garden. How could they be happy when you felt so sad? Part of you wanted them to feel your pain too, so you wouldn't have be so lonely with it, but part of you was glad they couldn't, it was private after all. Your eyes suddenly swam with tears and you hurried to scrub them from your face. Although your mum was never around anymore, you wondered if that girl, that woman now, with the hair as bright as fire and eyes as alive and burning as the sun would be able to understand what this pain felt like. Sometimes, before you fell asleep, you liked to pretend that she, that Beverly Marsh, would come in and press a kiss against your hair, telling you that everything would be alright. That you would be a family now.
You shake your head sadly, digging the heel of your hands against your cheek, a bird flitting past your vision and distracting you from your thoughts. Ben had always said that your Uncle Stanley loved birds, sometimes it was the only thing he could remember about him. You didn’t see, as you watched the wings soar through the blue, your dad removing his shades, enjoying the many pot plants that reached upward with broad and spreading leaves as he climbed down the few steps away from his desk and out towards where his children were.
He frowns as he sees you sitting of by yourself, looking wistfully at your brothers. Stepping down, he reaches to pick up a few straggling daisies from the shadow of the patio. They made such a fine bouquet. They weren't the small flowers that bespeckle the lawn each spring, but the large asters, the giant daisies, that grow a couple of feet tall in the summer sun, their smell unbashful and tart, cutting through the air as easily as lemon.
Just the slight of Ben’s brown dress shoes rounding the corner was enough to release the breath you didn't even know you were holding in. With the sigh, your shoulders relaxed as you glanced up at his concerned face, taking the flowers he held out to you.
‘Hey dad.’
‘Don't look so sad.’ He sits down on the bench next to you, poking your nose and pulling you tight into his side, brushing a strand of  hair away from the side of your face.
‘What’s wrong, sweetheart?’ He takes a fake whiff, doing an overdramatic grimace before saying, ‘I don’t smell that badly, do I? I know I’ve been working for what seems like five years...’
You only sniff dejectedly and bury your face into the side of his chest. Ben’s eyebrows furrow in concern, his large hand digging into your shoulder, squeezing softly. You bathed in his warmth and the smell of freshly laundered clothes, trying to stop the sobs from choking up your throat.
‘I don’t want to be the only girl in this family anymore dad. Everyone just ignores me. I just feel like I don’t belong.’
Ben stops for a moment, wondering how he could have been so oblivious to the obvious signs of loneliness he had once known so well. His mouth drops often slightly in shock, before he shakes out of it and gently pulls you away from him, tilting your chin until you were glancing up into his swimming eyes.
‘When I was your age, I had been alone for so long I’d gotten used to it. I forgot what it felt like, to be the only planet in a universe full of stars. To be in your own little bubble while standing in the middle of the crowd. I used to dream of finding someone who was like me. I dreamt of you, sweetheart, because, by god, if you don’t mean the absolute world to me. So next time you feel like this, you come talk to me, straight away.’
Please support me on Kofi!
I should be pretending to be asleep right now
this is generational discrimination
plus trumps supporters are so old there asleep by now
ohhhh its over
1036 final time
okay so thoughts....I generally dont like the party system i think its ridiculous the system was not designed for it, and its now more about loyalty then the actual candidates. I also am really hesitant to put another strait white male in the oval office, especially one thats from “the lucky few” I.E. the smallest voting generation in the country and also the one that already holds the most positions. That being said, at this point its really anyone but trump and I think bidens got the experience to turn things around.
I AM IN SCHOOL I CANNOT VOTE. I am relying on all my older friends, followers, neighbors, and community members. To make an educated decision that wont further degrade the once hopeful future my generation awaits. Please if you can vote VOTE the kids are relying on you!
P.S. sorry i wasn't able to edit this earlier i struggle alot with spelling and didnt have the time to edit this because I HAD TO GO TO BED AND THEN GO TO SCHOOL. Why am I more politically active then people twice my age you might ask? Well, thats because adults are lazy and need to get of their gd asses and VOTE. So kids dont have to do the legwork for them.
I have said my peace now, have a wonderful day!
Scott POV
He parked his car in the train station car park, turning the engine off. Today had not been an enjoyable day; he thought as he prepared to wait for John's train to arrive, leaning forward against the steering wheel, chin resting on his arms.
He still couldn’t believe he didn’t notice how sick Alan was this morning. Like the kid had been telling him that he wasn’t feeling well, but did he listen?
No…
Some guardian he was, he thought with a frown, unintentionally glaring out his windscreen at the deserted train station. For all he knew, sending Alan to school could have made the cold even worse, and it was all his fault!
His frown shifted to a look of sadness as his mind went to Alan, who he had left at home. He hoped Allie was still asleep; he didn’t even want to imagine how upset Alan would be if he woke up and found out that he wasn’t there.
Alan was...in a word, a sensitive kid, who needed a gentle and caring touch.
They were Alan's security blanket, himself in particular as he was the closest thing the kid had to a parent. He was Allie’s brother, father and mother, all at the same time….Because there was no one else to take up those roles…
And, being honest, sometimes it was tough being all three of those things and often one gets forgotten among the others. It was usually the brother role that slipped; he was more a parent to Alan then a big brother at this point...
He sighed tiredly, pinching the bridge of his nose as he felt a slight headache coming on. He glanced up at the station as the overhead speakers announced John’s train arriving soon.
He undid his seat belt and stepped out of the car, so John would be able to see him when the train arrived. He watched as John’s train pulled into the station, stopping with a loud screech. It seemed really packed tonight...
After a couple of seconds, a sea of people flooded off the train. There were people in suits, people in uniforms and people in casual clothes, all tired from the long day.
Must have been a busy day at work.. or school, he added, spotting a couple of school kids chatting as they got picked up by their parents. Everybody looked so tired…
He was having difficulties spotting John in the crowd, which in itself was a rarity…Usually, John stands out like a sore thumb in a crowd; He thought with a small smile as he scanned the crowd for his brother. It was mostly because of John’s bright carrot red hair.
Which John had inherited from their grandfather on their mother’s side. Other than Gordon’s slightly red-tinted blond hair, John was the only one in the family with the red hair gene.
He couldn't help the small smile that formed as he scanned the crowd for his brother. The red hair definitely suited John..
While he looked nearly identical to their father, brown hair and dimples with his mother’s blue eyes. John, Gordon and Alan on the other hand were the most like their mother, in looks anyway…
Though both himself and John had inherited their father's height, both reaching the six foot mark easily.
In fact, he remembered his Grandma joking once that Alan was their mother’s little twin. Alan looked so much like Lucille Tracy; it was almost eerie, although Alan was very much a mix of all of them when it came to his personality.
If any one of them were the most like their mother in personality, it would be Virgil and John, he thought, his small smile becoming a full grin as he spotted his little brother getting off the train, his black laptop bag hanging from his shoulder.
“Hey, John!” He called to his brother, waving his arm in the air to get his little brother’s attention. “Over here!”
---
He didn’t know how, but John always seemed to make his car seem small, he thought, glancing over at the front passenger seat to see John with his long legs stretched out in front of him. Which didn’t make sense because he was taller than John…
Though he didn’t blame John for stretching out a bit, he thought as he drove his car around a corner. Those trains don’t really give you much space to move, and John looked drained.
It wasn’t hard to imagine why... John wasn’t a real people person and an hour train ride, surrounded by lots and lots of other people, could really drain a person like John.
That's why he waited until they were halfway home to ask John how his day was...
“It wasn’t that bad, but it was very busy, spent most of-” John yawned, his orange eyelashes blinking sleep from his eyes. “-of the day in the library studying for my astronomy exam..”
“I’m sure you’ll ace that, John” He smiled, keeping his eyes on the road. “You know the stars like no one else...except maybe Alan, kid definitely getting into that stuff…”
He has definitely caught the kid trying to sneak out at night to stargaze, way past his bedtime, he may add…
And most of the time, Alan completely forgets that it is cold at night and forgoes a jacket, resulting in an Allie popsicle by the time he realises the kid is out of bed…
Honestly, no wonder he’s going slightly grey...
“The astronomy exam isn’t just stars, Scott...” John explained, looking at him with a raised eyebrow. John always hated it when people had facts wrong.. “It’s asteroids, black holes, planets and complex situations that can only happen in space…”
He smiled in slight amusement, not really understanding what his brother was going on about… Space wasn’t really his area of expertise, give him a plane and the clear sky and he was fine but space…
Completely out of his comfort zone...He was a sky bird, not astronaut...
“You’re going to go up there one day, aren’t you?” He asked quietly with mixed emotions, keeping his eyes on the road so John wouldn’t see the conflict in them, even though he was sure his brother could hear it in his voice. “Like Dad…”
Space ran in their family, their father being the first man to step on Mars. However, the stardom of being the sons of the first man on Mars didn’t really help them in the long run. The money his father had earned from NASA had gone into his and John’s education.
His father was hoping to start a business but had died before he could get it off the ground. The little money that their parents had saved and put away went into supporting them until he could find a job to support him and his brothers.
“If I can graduate and get accepted into NASA, yeah…” John smiled, looking out the car window at the stars in the sky. John turned to face him, “so, how has your day been? Heard it's been pretty rough...”
“It’s been…” He sighed, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. “Yeah, rough is probably the best way to describe it..”
He should have seen that Alan was sick, he thought with a little scowl, his grip on the steering wheeling getting tighter. How could he prioritise getting to work on time over actually taking time to check if Alan was telling the truth or not?
Maybe if he had listened, Alan wouldn’t be-
“You had no way of knowing that Alan was sick, Scott,” John spoke up suddenly, snapping him out of his self-loathing thoughts. “so stop beating yourself up over it…”
He blinked at John in shocked surprise before focusing back on the road, slowing his car down to a stop as he came to a stoplight. “You don’t get it, John..” He sighed dismissively.
“He told me he wasn’t feeling well and I didn’t listen...” He hit the accelerator, driving the car around the corner. Admittedly he may have hit the pedal a little too hard in his frustration. “What kind of guardian does that?”
“Did he look obviously sick this morning?” John asked, blue-green eyes regarding him calmly, not even commenting on his slightly speedy turn. “Because I find it very hard to believe that you would send him to school if he even looked a little bit sick, so?”
He sighed, letting his shoulders drop.
“Well, he didn’t look very sick this morning, no...But-” He answered reluctantly, shifting his hands slightly on the steering wheel with a frown, “-but he was harder to get up than unusual…”
“which in hindsight should have told me something was wrong,” He pinched the bridge of his nose with a slightly pained sigh, the headache from before coming back full force. “but Alan has never been an easy kid to wake up anyway, so…”
John’s eyes watched him in silence, beckoning him to continue. John may not be a people person, but he knew people, knew when to speak and when to listen. John was very good at listening...
“Like I checked his temperature and it seemed normal..” He explained with a frown, letting himself properly reflect on the day’s events.  “So I thought he was just tired this morning and that once he was at school, he would be fine..”
But Alan hadn’t been fine…
“But then I got the call from the school and-Oh John, he sounded so sick...” He sighed, running his hand through his hair in slight distress. “I can’t believe I didn’t see it…”
“You know...You are too hard on yourself sometimes Scott..” John sighed wistfully, shaking his head slightly as he spoke. “You did nothing wrong, yes, you sent Alan to school when admittedly he should have stayed home…”
He snorted dismissively to himself, “I don’t know about you John, but that sounds pretty bad to me…” He said as he turned off of the main street, home starting to get closer by the minute.
“I haven’t finished yet..” John scowled at him, greeny-blue eyes giving him a slight stink eye. “Anyway, what I was trying to say, is that at the time, it wasn’t obvious that Alan needed to stay at home. So how could you blame yourself for something you didn’t even realise was an issue?”
He shifted in his seat slightly, feeling a bit uncomfortable as John’s reasoning stood up and he didn’t want to admit it...John was right but…But he needed to be the best for his brothers, he couldn’t make mistakes.
Mum or Dad would not have made the same mistake...
John sighed, very clearly seeing his refusal to face the facts. “You made that choice based on the facts you had at the time, it may not have been the right one but that’s okay Scott...” John gave him a small comforting smile, “you’re allowed to make mistakes..”
No, I’m not…
“Sure, whatever...Can we just drop this?” He asked as he turned his car onto their street, home just minutes away. “I’m really tired, it's been a long day…”
John’s shoulders dropped, eyes filled with disappointment, “Sure..” John sighed softly, turning his head to look outside his window. He was sure John was already planning to get Virgil involved, knowing his brothers…
He pulled into their driveway...
Arrowverse Science Fair AU
~2004 National Highschool (Gr. 8-12) Science Fair
Projects:
Felicity Smoak (Gr. 9) – Computer software to detect card counters. She may or may not have hacked into online card games to test it (this wasn’t included in/on her project.)
Cisco Ramon (Gr. 8 or 9) – Piano playing robot. He thought it played better than Dante. His parents didn’t agree.
Caitlin Snow (Gr. 9) – Analysis of physiological response to various stimuli. She wanted to find stimuli that would help kids cope with traumatic experiences (say crashing their bike or losing their father.) If she was able to find something that made her mom show some/any emotion that would be a bonus.
Barry Allen (Gr. 9) – Growing crystals (lots of different and cool ones). His project started out as an attempt to make something special for Iris for her birthday but turned into an elaborate project. It ended up being a good choice because 1) it reminded Barry of his parents (the first science experiment they did together was grow Borax crystals on pipecleaner and 2) it followed Joe’s ‘your science fair project must make, not destroy things’ rule instated after Barry’s Gr. 6 project.
Alex (Gr. 9) and Kara (Gr. 8) Danvers – Birds in my Backyard. Eliza had insisted on Alex getting Kara involved in her science fair project this year. Alex was excited to show Kara the science fair experience she enjoyed but wanted to pick a topic she knew more about that Kara (her knowledge of math and science was intimidating enough without the superpowers). Seeing Kara’s interest in birds they decided to study birds in their backyard. With Alex’s design and Kara’s powers they built tall post’s and attached bird houses and feeders with differing properties. They then monitored which kinds of birds built nests and ate from where (with some help from Kara’s flight and X-ray vision). Alex also picked 5 nests from different species to chronicle the embryo and chick development. Kara enjoyed doing the project and learning about birds from Alex. The actual science fairs, not so much but those were Alex’s favourite part. Note: Streaky was locked in the house for the duration of the project so he wouldn’t eat any of the birds.
Winn Schott (Gr. 11) – Pop-up room/ room in a suitcase. Being in the foster system for the last couple years inspired Winn to design a room that collapsed to the size of a suitcase for easy transport but could expand in less than a minute into a nice-sized, fully-furnished, sound-proof room, so no matter how many times a foster kid was moved around they always had their own space and stuff. Also good for camping, travel and special short-term events (like waiting in line at conventions).
Lena Luthor (Gr. 5) – Oxygen absorbing/releasing crystal that could allow breathing underwater. After her Mum drown when Lena was four, she was determined to develop a simple way for people to breath under water. She was able to do just that by synthesizing a substance that absorbed and stored large amounts of oxygen then released it slowly (so if someone held in in their mouth, they could breathe underwater). She was happy and excited that her mom and older brother were interested in her project but a little frustrated and concerned that they were so focused on its ability to absorb all the oxygen from a room (in a big enough amount). Although she supposed it could be used in that capacity to control/extinguish fires. Note: although in elementary school, Lena got to compete against the high schoolers since her project was so advanced for her age.
Sara Lance (Gr. 11) – The Biomechanics of Dance and Martial Arts. As punishment for skipping classes, then sassing her teacher and principal when they tried to discipline her for skipping classes, Sara had to complete a science fair project. To make the best of it Sara chose something that interested her. In hindsight she wished she hadn’t. Her project was so good she was chosen to represent her school at the state and national science fair.
Ronnie Raymond (Gr. 9-12?)- Structural design to minimize Superman related damage in Metropolis. Ronnie was proud of his project and had enjoyed analyzing the powers of Metropolis’ hero, but he lost any chance he had at winning when he decided to leave his project to go flirt with Caitlin. At least Kara, whose project was next to his, seemed interested.
Hartley Rathaway – something to do with sound waves
Lily Stein (Gr. 11) – designing and comparing different miniaturized forms of renewable energy sources. She had some help from her dad.
Patty Spivot – Recreation of crime scene evidence using food models. A bunch of her friends (her whole cabin actually) from her summer camp for those interested in law enforcement came to support her.
-       Maggie Sawyer – seemed really interested in the bird project
-       Ralph Dibny – found every project that said it was OK to touch. His favourite was slime. To Patty’s surprise he didn’t break anything.
-       Dinah Drake – hung out with Patty most of the time. Talked to Hartley, beside her, about his project on sound waves for a bit (seemed kinda interested). Patty joined her when she got into a conversation with Sara, across the way, and Laurel about the implications of her biomechanics project in fighting and self-defence. The rest of the time they talked about that Vince guy from camp Dinah thought was cute.
-       Eddie Thawne – he hung out with Patty most of the time too but did do a lap of the fair with Iris, who was there supporting Barry, when she accepted his offer to buy her something at the concession.
Notable events:
- Clark came to see Alex and Kara’s project and brought James and Lois with him. Kara and Clark (very subtly) tested the models on the project beside them that had been abandoned and were said to be superman proof/resistant. They were very impressed to discover the models did indeed stand-up to heat vison, freeze breath and super-strength leading Clark to believe the student had a bright future. James spent most of his time talking to Winn about his pop-up room project because, “Don’t you think these would be way better than cubicles, the Daily Planet should definitely purchase some.”
- Cat Grant, a young reporter from the National City Tribune pushing a stroller, came around and interviewed all the contestants because, “What better place to find the next world changing innovator or innovation” as she put it when she stopped to talk to Clark (more like flirt Kara thought). Alex used Clark distracting Cat as an opportunity to play with the baby in the stroller. This was the only time during the entire science fair Alex was distracted, except maybe when Maggie had come, but they mainly talked about the project like Alex did with everyone, which left Alex wondering why it felt different. During their entire interview Cat called Kara Kira, much to her annoyance. At least the baby seemed to like her. This interview sparked a conversation between Kara, Lois and Clark about journalism which Iris overhead while she was visiting Barry and joined in.
- Graduate students Ray Palmer and Curtis Holt were volunteer judges and ticket takers. Curtis wore a varsity jacket over his shirt and tie which covered his name tag, but at every project he judged he would describe every aspect as terrific, so the contestants started calling him Mr. Terrific. While judging Barry’s project they began a discussion about their favourite elements/minerals/gems. Barry couldn’t decide so joked he liked Barium. Ray shared his love for dwarf star alloy with a ‘quick’ lecture about its rumoured properties and potential uses. Curtis listed at least 10 compounds essential for modern tech as he flip-flopped back and forth trying to decide a favourite and Lex Luthor who was visiting his sister’s project beside them interjected that he favoured kryptonite. While taking tickets Curtis witnessed the following interaction. He asked Damian Darhk, who was carrying baby Nora, what brought him to the science fair. He responded with “These are the brightest young minds in the country and being young means they are malleable. So, there is nowhere better to recruit future talent for my enterprise.” Malcolm Merlyn, who was behind, him added “I know exactly what you mean with what the world’s coming to we’re going to need a bright mind to save it.” This led Tommy, who was accompanying him, to say “I thought we were just here to support the Queen’s.” Then one of the other judges, Dr. Harrison Wells aka Eobard Thawne in disguise, added “No your Dad is right. This world’s next HERO could be in this very room. I’ve already made a list of students to keep my eye on.” He pulled out a small piece of paper from his pocket. On it Curtis saw four names: Hartley Rathaway, Cisco Ramon, Caitlin Snow and Ronnie Raymond. This led to a long conversation between the three men about numerous threats to society, the country and the world and the possible drastic solutions that would need to be employed to stop them. When they left Curtis turned to Ray and asked, “Was it just me or were those Doomsday Dudes really creepy?” “What” Ray replied his attention clearly being pulled from elsewhere. But before Curtis could answer a voice behind him said “Doomsday Dudes is a terrible nickname you should call them the Legion of Doom.” Curtis turned to find Cisco. “Just saying,” he continued, “anyway I heard there’s free Big Belly Burger for the contestants. When’s that coming?” Ray had missed the entire conversation Curtis was asking about because he had been making funny faces at baby Nora the whole time hoping to make her smile or laugh but she had just stared at him with her big blue eyes.
- Queen consolidated gave out a $1500 scholarship and a summer internship at the applied sciences division. This year Moira and Robert had made Oliver come and brought 9-year-old Thea. Oliver was tasked with watching Thea who ran around the entire science fair wanting to look at and touch all the projects even the ones with big ‘Do Not Touch’ signs on them. She spent at least an hour trying to get everybody around the robot pianist to sing and dance with her. Most people ignored her although she was able to get Cisco, Winn, Stein, Joe, Kara (who kept trying to get Alex to join) and to Oliver’s surprise Malcolm Merlyn all to sing with her and they were all surprisingly good. She also got many people to dance including the Lance girls. She even convinced Cisco to make the robot play some of her favourite songs from Disney movies. Barry was very happy that he was able to convince Iris to dance with him for a couple songs with just a little encouragement from Thea and despite Kara’s constant encouragement Alex only agreed to dance when Maggie asked. Oliver had to present his family’s award which went to Felicity. When her name was announced Donna yelled “Woohoo, that’s my daughter! Way to go sweetie!” which earned a whispered “Mom, ssshh” and accompanied eye roll from Felicity as she headed to the stage with her head down and cheeks flushed. When she got onstage Oliver presented her with her award and Felicity began to babble, “Thanks. This is so cool. I’m such a big fan of yours… well not yours… your company… your family’s company. But uh you seem cool too. I could be a fan of yours, but not like a creepy stalker fan just like a normal supportive fan, ya know. I’m sorry, I’m rambling, it’s just, I don’t know what to say. Your very handsome… and I just said that out loud. I’m so sorry.” She stops and whispers “come on Smoak, pull yourself together,” then takes a deep breath before addressing Oliver again, “Thank-you again for the award and I look forward to working with you, or for you. I’m just gonna go now.” Oliver couldn’t help smiling as she left and thinking that just maybe if she had been around when Thea was partnering everyone up to dance he may have just participated.
- Kara quickly got bored of standing by her project and started wandering around to talk to the other contestants. She spent a good chunk of time talking to Barry. Tried to join in on a heated debate between Felicity, Cisco and Winn about the best language to code in but quickly left when she had no idea what they were talking about. She ended up spending most of her time with Lena. They talked about their projects, their lives and interests and about dealing with new and scary situations especially when you feel different from everyone else and learnt that they were both adopted. However, the whole time they were talking Lena’s eyes kept scanning the room as if waiting for something to jump out and scare her. Kara learnt why when a woman Kara thought must be Lena’s mother showed up and menacingly questioned why she was distracting her daughter.
- J’onn came in disguise to check out the Danvers sister’s project
I haven’t made a list about other materials in a while, so I thought I’d list some Swedish literature. Keep in mind that I’ll start with children’s books.
But more than anything Mardie is sensitive and has a big heart. From her privileged position she observes the world and notices all the suffering and injustices. She has an endless capacity for empathy and kindness. In that regard she practises what her Dad, the radical newspaper editor, writes about in his paper – solidarity with the poor and vulnerable.“
