All Souls' Day: A Time for Reflection and Remembrance
Shaina Tranquilino
November 2, 2023
Every year on November 2nd, people around the world come together to observe All Souls' Day. This solemn occasion is a significant part of the Christian tradition, particularly in Catholicism, where it serves as a day to remember and pray for the souls of departed loved ones.
Originating from ancient customs and beliefs, All Souls' Day has evolved over time to become a day of introspection and remembrance. It follows All Saints' Day, which honors all known and unknown saints recognized by the Church. While All Saints' Day celebrates those who have attained heaven, All Souls' Day focuses on those still undergoing purification before entering paradise.
The concept of purgatory plays an essential role during this observance. Purgatory is seen as a temporary state where souls are cleansed from their sins before they can fully enter God's presence. On All Souls' Day, Catholics believe that through prayer, they can assist these souls in their journey towards eternal salvation.
One of the most common practices on this day is visiting cemeteries to pay respects to deceased family members and friends. People often clean and decorate gravesites with flowers, candles, and personal mementos as a way to honor their loved ones. The atmosphere is permeated with a sense of reverence as individuals reflect upon memories shared with those who have passed away.
In addition to visiting cemeteries, attending special Masses dedicated to the departed is another significant aspect of All Souls' Day. During these services, prayers are offered specifically for those souls in purgatory. The intention behind these prayers is not only to help them but also to acknowledge our connection with them as members of the same spiritual family.
All Souls' Day reminds us of the importance of gratitude for life while acknowledging mortality's inevitability. It encourages reflection on our own actions and relationships – both past and present. This day prompts us to remember not only our loved ones who have passed away but also those we may have lost touch with, allowing us the opportunity to reconnect and heal any unresolved feelings.
In a world that often moves at an increasingly fast pace, All Souls' Day offers a moment of pause for introspection. It allows us to confront our emotions surrounding loss and mortality while reaffirming the bonds that transcend death. Through prayer and remembrance, we can find solace in knowing that the souls we hold dear are never truly gone from our lives.
While All Souls' Day holds religious significance for many, it also serves as a reminder of the universal human experience of grief and longing. Regardless of one's faith or belief system, this occasion provides an opportunity to honor the memories of loved ones and cherish the connections we share with them.
On this day, let us come together as a community – both locally and globally – to remember those who have left this earthly plane. May we find comfort in their continued presence within our hearts, and may their souls find eternal peace on their journey towards heaven.

Service Open: Annual Honouring the Dead Rite: Invite to the community
Every year since I became pagan (around 14 or so years) I have been performing a great death/honouring ancestral rite around the end of October beginning of November- mainly coinciding with Dia De Los Muertos. It often involves honouring of the ancestors (prayer, dance song, offerings and communing with them), connecting with those that have passed- feeding the hungry, forgotten and wandering dead, and honouring the fallen warriors. A remembrance. As well as worship (song, dance, litanies, offerings) and connection with those deities I work with connected to death. Since becoming devoted to the demonic divine I have been also performing a Gate Opening Rite with Ocat to open the gates of the dead and tending to such thing as well as well as necromantic divination at this portal. This is usually the most elaborate rite of the year for me.
This year I have been feeling the nudge to open up this space to a wider community participation. I notice in some cases there is a lot of exchanging with the dead and asking for their help in workings and divination, but often little is mentioned about giving the dead something without exchange and appreciating/ helping and care-taking of the dead. So as part of my rites I usually do a blessing for the dead.
This blessing includes specific prayers and litanies, dancing and song in their (the beloved dead’s) honour. As well as the usual specially prepared food and libations, handmade kyphi incense, a specially prepared herbal blend and vocal blessing with fire rites. Since this done under the auspices of the Open Gate, it is very potent and create quite a strong and tangible connection with the dead. The blessing itself can enable healing for the dead and aiding whatever goes on with them, to enable stronger connection and influence of the dead in the participants lives (so the dead can be more magickally and divinatorially potent as well). It is giving back to the dead without desiring anything in return, which in and of itself is a profound energetic practice. This type of “feeding the dead” goes beyond the normal offerings and impacts them on a more soul and transcendent level as well, as merely keeping their memory (and connection to this plane) alive.
This is the part of my rites that I would be opening up to those interested:
I am offering a service for any individuals Beloved Dead that they wish to have included in this ritual to receive this blessing; be they ancestors, heroic dead, beloved dead, those that have recently passed that people would like have receive this blessing. Really, it is appropriate for any of the dead who is somewhat connected to the individual ( that the individual chooses)- the only caveat is they must be have passed ( ie be dead- this is not to be performed for the living). This is a non-denominational, non-religious rite, anyone of any background can participate. There is nothing that the participant needs to do on their end- though they may feel inclined to connect with such energies and said ancestor/beloved dead with usual practices, it is by no means a requirement. While this part of the rite is generally aimed at human dead, it can be adjusted for animals as well- the pricing is the same. Please just let me know- if this is the case.
The service I am offering for the end of October into the first weeks of November this year. The cut-off date for participants is October 25 of this year.
If you wish to participate in this rite ( as in having someone you would like to receive this blessing) please message/DM me;
that you would like to participate,
your name/handle( what you would like to be addressed as),
the name of the ancestor/beloved dead you want the blessing for ( there can be multiple),
if you would like to add a short ( few sentences ) message that the dead one receives, please also include this.
For participation; the price is $15 via ko-fi, tumblr tips or stripe.
This is to cover the cost of the offerings and herbal mixtures. The participant does not receive anything (physical) from this, it is focused on the dead or the ancestor themselves. I will post photos in this blog after the rite. If individual participants would like a photo of their ancestors/beloved dead's name being included in the rite please let me know in messages/DM as well.
For some background on myself and my practices; I was kemetic and practiced Ancient Egyptian ritual and rites for the dead for many years. I am quite naturally connected to and guided by the Death gods of various cultures and the Death Demonic Divine as well. This rite has been influenced by various animistic, necromantic and shamanistic practices, Japanese esoteric Shinto and Buddhist beliefs and practices regarding the dead, and insight from working with the various deities of death; these include Hela, Odin, Rán, Mictēcacihuātl, Mictlāntēcutli, Yinepu, Set, Aset, Het-Hert, Wesir, Kali ma, Baron Samedi, The Morrigan, Lord Eurynomous, Ocat, Hecate, Lady Frucissierre, Lord O and Lord S, as well as my own ancestors and companions. I am currently a priestess of the demonic divine. All this said however I again stress this is a non-denominational rite and is suitable for anyone to participate in. It is centred around honouring, thanking and care-taking of the dead. I am honoured to be offering this to a wider community, Please reach out and contact me via messages/DM if interested in participating in this rite.
