02/04/2025 Progress Update:

Almost done editing the first section of Chapter 4, yay!

Considering breaking up this chapter into two, though not quite sure how I would format it if I did. Even without the two last sections edited, it’s more than 24K words (about 8K first section, 5K second section, and 11K last section) and I’m thinking maybe that’s a bit too overwhelming for one chapter. Then again, every single piece connects pretty crucially with each other, so I’d feel a little weird NOT having them all in the same chapter. Idk, I’ll think on it.

*Ramble incoming, feel free to skip, I’m just screaming into the void*

Hopefully people are okay with not having a ton of saiouma elements this chapter. This is, obviously, a saiouma-centered fic, but I have the other “relationship” tags because I will also explore elements of Shuichi and Kaito’s friendship, Kokichi and Rantaro’s (though not as heavily), and ESPECIALLY Shuichi and Kirigiri’s ever-adapting, complicated dynamic.

One of the most comforting things someone commented was that they found Kokichi and Shuichi interesting as separate people, not just together, because, to me, this fic will be just as much about them individually as it will them as a ‘couple’. I made the decision to give Shuichi an alter ego because I wanted to write him pursuing other elements of being a detective that didn’t necessarily involve the Phantom Thief, and I gave Kokichi his status as the Ultimate Affluent Progeny for a similar reason, too. I wanted it to be clear that they have their own lives outside of each other— lives that are going to quickly and violently intersect, but separate all the same. So, when they do eventually become intertwined, it feels not only earned but gives a strong base for how different their lives become once they finally cross over. Status quo shattered, new lives begun, peak reached�� and then it all comes crashing down because of their own separate goals clashing.

I am a hopefully healthy amount of obsessed with really digging open these two characters. Another thing I’ve seen commented that I’m very happy about is that, despite the differences given to Shuichi and Kokichi’s characters, it’s still very much them. I don’t write lines of dialogue unless I can hear the characters speaking it; if I can’t hear it, then they wouldn’t say it, is usually how I operate. But I still always worry that I’m completely mischaracterizing them. I desperately don’t want to reduce either of them to simple eye candy for the other, nor the opposite end of the spectrum where they’re “mega-ultra depressed all the time and this is the most melodramatic fic in the world”. What I want, and what I hope to achieve, is complexity— keeping Shuichi and Kokichi’s natural selves there but also steering into territories that come as a result of the universe they’ve been dropped into.

This is especially something I want for Shuichi. He’s the main man of this fic and, really, the journey we’re going to follow the closest, and I hope and pray he is coming off how I need him to. I really, really dislike Phantom Thief AUs that paint Shuichi like some gruff, alcoholic detective who’s either this hardened gunslinger who’s seen it all or Hank from Detroit Become Human (don’t know how else to put that, maybe just like he’s completely given up on life and is just wallowing in the booze). I took the idea of him being an alcoholic and applied it in a way I felt was much more realistic, rather than this weird, almost romantic way I feel it falls so easily into. Shuichi’s dependency on alcohol is not a good thing, far from romantic or sexy, and its coexistence with his heart condition is going to be a near-constant thorn in his side this entire fic. I want him to have not only a journey becoming a detective, catching the Phantom Thief, and stealing Kokichi’s heart but also grappling with his own self-doubt, self-destruction, and hypocriticism that has led him to seek comfort in something that’s killing him.

All this to say, I write lots of words and maybe muddy the water with the amount of thoughts and feelings I want each of these characters to have, but it’s because I want them to feel real. I think one of the most interesting parts about being a human being is that we can experience so many contradicting emotions all at once, and they can all be true. We can know we’re capable of great things, while also taking every step possible to sabotage ourselves because we’re so terrified of failure or rejection, like Shuichi. We can think we’re the best person in the entire world and still deeply hate everything about ourselves, like Kokichi.

I’m being maybe a bit too self-indulgent there. I don’t mean to come off like I’ve got these characters pinned down, because really I don’t. But I’m certainly trying. And I hope this journey is okay for others to follow along with.

I’m flattered by a lot of the praising comments, but ultimately I’ve never written Shuichi or Kokichi before, much less them together. I’m a new face in a fandom that has existed for longer than I’ve been aware of DRV3 (I outright refused to play it for a long time, but loved DR1 and 2 for many years) and so I come to you as someone who desires to explore what I never have with this fic. And that means I may make missteps along the way.

Perhaps this is all just coming off as very insecure, and really if you’ve read this far I am astonished and a little scared of you, but I do very, very much appreciate those who have made me feel welcomed. Clearly I don’t have a good understanding of ao3 or tumblr or even just fandom in general, and it’s been fun learning. I never got the chance to do things like this when I was a kid, and I suppose now I’m making up for it as an adult, and it makes me happy to know there are other people my age on here still enjoying the simple, nerdy pleasures of this stupid, awesome franchise.

A little behind on responding to y'all because this week I've been focused on finalizing some baby things here. Might be welcoming the little one earlier than the beginning of June so I'm rushing to get everything ready!

BUT! I finally finished the rough draft for the next FFTD installment "The Evening of Insecurities" and it stands at almost 11k unedited. Apparently Matt really wanted his smut. Now I've been working on "The Quiet Morning at Home" and I am hoping to get "The Rooftop" written soon. I've got a few other drafts sitting around because I'm planning to try and stockpile some and release a few still here and there after baby comes. I know I'll have a break from writing around then though, but hopefully editing and posting here and there will be do-able. But I'll let y'all know more about that in a few weeks!

Unfortunately Matt, Frank, and Mikey are all currently fighting for my attention in my head about which stories they want me to get drafts written for and I'm trying to get them to stop panicking over baby coming so I can focus.

Today’s BG3 chapter is about half edited at this point. It will still go up today, come hell or high water! But I’d rather spend a little extra time on it than post it before it’s not ready. Especially since I feel like it’s the climax of the whole fic.

I have a lot of other stuff I have to do this morning that is unfortunately time sensitive (like going to therapy, haha), so it probably won’t be up until this afternoon at the earliest. Going out of town this weekend for a wedding and there’s like a million things that have to get done first.

Thoughts: NaNo done, dusted, and fucking obliterated - I completed my 50k goal a week early and cruised to another few k's of additions. My progress was very consistent throughout the month (see graph below); my smallest writing week was still 11k! I got stuck into a WiP that I've been adding to on and off for the better part of a year and I'm getting pumped to finish it. Hopefully I'll send it to the editing basket next month, but who knows - my estimates of fic word counts are so far off that they're never in the same ballpark as the end total. If this fic goes over 80k someone needs to come to my house and throw water on me.

Hello! First of all, I'm really glad you enjoyed the fic, it makes me really happy!!

I /do/ plan on updating it- it's just that I'm a really slow writer and this fic has. Um. Become much bigger than what I initially planned. Woops.

The current chapter on Ao3 consist of 9k words, and the next chapter, while already finished, still needs to be edited. Problem is, the next chapter is around 19k words long-- which is, uh, a lot. And I still need to edit it, which means it will get even longer. W o o p s.

Out of those 19k words, 8k are already edited, so I got 11k words left to work on. I've been thinking of cutting it somewhere and make the fic 3 chapters instead of 2, but I havent found a good place to split the chapter in half yet.

All this to say- the fic is still being written!!! It's just that I'm very slow and often get side tracked with other stuff-- like work or my ow drawing projects. But! I still try to find time to write, at least a bit every week. So thank you for your interest, for your ask, and I hope to see you next chapter! (Hopefully soon enough!)
